1. Anthracnose
Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Glomerella cingulata)
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Disease produces symptoms like leaf spot, blossom blight, withertip, twig blight and fruit rot .
• Symptoms on leaves show as gray to brown spots with dark margins and a yellow halo. The spots later enlarge and coaleasce to form sizable necrotic areas.
• Tender shoots and foliage are easily affected which ultimately cause die back young branches.
• Blossom blight may vary in severity from slight to a heavy infection of the panicles .
• Black spots develop on panicles as well as on fruits. Severe infection destroys the entire inflorescence resulting in no setting of fruits.
• Young infected fruits develop black spots, shrivel and drop off.
• Fruits infected at mature stage carry the pathogen into storage and cause considerable loss during storage, transit and marketing (Figure -1).

1) Downy Mildew
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Yellow, angular spots restricted by veins resembling mosaic mottling appear on upper surface of leaves .
• Corresponding lower surface of these spots shows a purplish downy xgrowth in moist weather.
• Spots turn necrotic with age.
• Diseased leaves become yellow and fall down .
• Diseased plants get stunted and die .
• Fruits produced may not mature and have a poor taste (Fig.-1).

Ginger of commerce is the rhizome derived from Zingiber officinale. This plant is an herbaceous perennial but usually is cultivated annually. Belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, it is known as Adraka in Sanskrit and Adrak in Hindi. Ginger contains 6.5% oleoresin, commercially known as Gingirene, extracted from ground ginger using solvents. The composition of dry ginger includes 10.85% moisture, 1.8% volatile oil, 19.6% water extract, 6.0% cold alcohol extract, 53% starch, 7.7% crude fibre, 12.4% crude protein, 6.64% total ash, and 0.14% acid-insoluble ash. The volatile oil is a pale yellow liquid with a warm, spicy, sweet, aromatic fragrance and a pungent taste. Its primary constituent is zingiberene, a sesquiterpene, while its pungency is attributed to zingerone. Ginger is known to contain around 200 different volatile compounds.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller), commonly known as Saunf or Badi Saunf, belongs to the Apiaceae family and is primarily cultivated for its seeds, from which fennel oil is extracted. The main component of fennel oil from cultivated F. vulgare is trans-anethole, which typically makes up 50-60% of the oil. Other constituents include d-2 fenchone, methyl chavicol, 2-pinene, camphene, d-2 phellandrene, dipentenes, B-pinene, terpinene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, a-terpinene, linalool, cis-anethole, anisic aldehyde, anisic ketone, and foenicullin. Recently, the presence of a toxic ketonic constituent has been reported. Indian fennel oil contains over 70% anethole and around 6% fenchone. Sweet or Roman fennel fruits are rich in anethole, phellandrene, and d-limonene, with a high concentration of anethole (up to 90%) and the absence of fenchone contributing to its sweet fragrance and flavour. Anisaldehyde and anisic acid have also been identified as present.

The startup ecosystem gained momentum post the dot-com bubble, with historical roots tracing back to early 20th-century firms like IBM. The launch of the “Startup India” initiative in 2016 accelerated this growth, positioning India as a global startup hub. This study focuses on Maharashtra, India’s leading state with 3,661 recognized startups, ranking first in 2018 with 2,787 registrationsaccording to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. With Mumbai and Pune as key startup hubs, the study explores the vibrant ecosystem, analysing its growth, challenges, and contributions to India’s economic landscape.

Introduction
World population is increasing and currently stands at 8.2 Billion as on 2025. Food security of population of any country is becoming a challenging task and the entire population depends on the available national resources. The importance of scientific community in securing foods for everybody was felt necessary and it was expressed that there is a huge herculean task to ensure food for everybody. Farming community and fruit growers across the globe were engaged in serious efforts to produce fruits of good quality. The necessity to develop advanced technologies for nutritious foods was thus given national importance not only for food security but also of nutritional security. The sincere scientific efforts to develop recent innovative technologies to support fruit production even at harsh soils and environmental conditions are praiseworthy. Farmers, stakeholders, policy planners and technology developers have been devoted to achieve the target of Sustainable Developmental Goals. The target of United Nation’s 2030 to eradicate poverty and eradication of malnutrition should be achieved sustainably. People across nations are working devotedly to achieve the target. However, climatic changes have been significantlyaffecting the food production to food security across nations. Decadal information suggested the adverse impact of climates on the fruit production. Recent changes in weather extremisms had also affect harshly on the food production to supply chain. Thus, the role of scientific community to coup up the environmental hazards and to sustain fruit production becomes a reality. In this context, agroadvisory services plays significant role to support farming community and fruit growers to adopt time bound managemental practices. The ultimate aim of these services is to improve the orchard soil and tree health condition, enhance factor productivity vis-à-vis profitability and precise use of available natural resources. Quantification of variability in environmental indicators, soil and tree interactions were felt necessary for formulating effective policy plan (Malhotra, 2017). Adak et al. (2022) advocated for foliage spraying of 1 per cent zinc sulphate on mango cv. Dashehari to enhance yield and nutrient richness in fruit pulp.

Introduction
Horticulture crops hold significant importance for their economic, nutritional, environmental, and aesthetic contributions. They contribute to agricultural GDP, create employment opportunities, and provide income for farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain. Horticultural crops often have highvalue market demand, leading to increased profitability for farmers and rural communities. The horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal, spices are rich sources of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They contribute to a balanced and nutritious diet, promoting good
health and preventing various diseases. Consumption of horticultural crops is linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. These crops have environmental benefits. They contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for various species and supporting beneficial insects and pollinators. Additionally, horticultural practices such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and organic farming methods can enhance soil health, reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate climate change impacts. Adak and Pandey (2018) emphasised soil management of horticultural crops for attaining food and nutritional security of farm women. Babu et al. (2022) explained scientific interventions for enhancing productivity and profitability of farmers’ engaged in horticultural sector while Gundappa et al. (2016c) recommended management protocols for effective controls of mango hoppers to growers. Even, digital solutions are now-a-days is being tried to improve economic prosperity of fruit growers (Verma and Adak, 2021). Horticulture crops contribute to food security by diversifying thefood supply. They provide an array of options beyond staple crops, ensuring a varied and nutritious diet for individuals and communities.

India produces 146 million tons of vegetables (NHB report, 2011) and the total area under vegetable cultivation is around 8.5 million ha. Potato, tomato, onion, cabbage and brinjal account for around 60 per cent of the total vegetable production in terms of quantity. India’s annual fruit production is 75 million tons (NHB report, 2011) and the total area under fruit cultivation is around 6.3 million ha. The major Indian fruits are mango, banana, citrus fruits, apple, guava, papaya, pineapple, and grapes. Fresh fruits and vegetables play a vital role in Indian context and their marketing works as an influencing force in the economy. Though retailing of fresh fruit and vegetables is a low margin business, the market potential is very large in a country like India. This factor has attracted many corporates into this sector. Marketing of agricultural produce is different and more challenging than many industrial products because of the perishability, seasonality, and bulkiness. The very nature of small size of land holdings by the farmers, varied climatic conditions, production spread over wide geographical area, mainly in remote villages, diversified consumption patterns/habits of the Indian consumers and poor Supply Chain (SC) infrastructure makes marketing for fruits and vegetables more complicated. At the same time, Indian consumers demand fresh fruits and vegetables. Thus, Management plays a crucial role in marketing fruits and vegetables. Supply Chain efficiency not only helps in increased production and per capita consumption, but also contributes to economic development of the country. As a result, Supply Chain Management (SCM) throws both challenges and opportunities in marketing of fruits and vegetables. Efficient SCM in marketing, not only increases the profitability and efficiency of retailers, but also adds value to different stakeholders like cultivators (farmers), consolidators and consumers. Traditional Retail Model of fruit and vegetables is predominantly followed in unorganized retail sector. Players involved in this model are commission agents, auctioneers, wholesalers, traditional retailer of all type of formats family run ‘mom and pop’ stores, roadside shops, pavement shops and cart vendors apart from farmers and customers.

Juice and juice products represent a very important segment of the total processed fruit industry. Juice products are being marketed as refrigerated, shelf-stable, and frozen, in a variety of packages with increased emphasis on functionality, health attributes, new flavors or blends, and in some cases fortified with vitamins and minerals. High-quality juice operations are dependent upon a source of high- quality raw material.
Fruits provide an important source of energy for human beings. But the main drawback is that the availability of majority of fruits is seasonal and they are perishable. Hence, fruits need to be processed and preserved which extends their shelf life and also results in value-addition. India is a producer of many varieties of citrus fruits. Hence, it is sensible if processing industries are set up near the places where the fruits are grown. States like Maharashtra, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and the North-Eastern states are high producers of many fruit verities. Assam is a major producer of fruits such as pineapple, orange, lemon, mango etc. and it is grown in large quantities over here. Hence, fruit squash and cordial making activity in a small scale is highly recommended in these regions.

Natural farming integrates traditional wisdom with ecological sustainability by using on-farm resources, avoiding synthetic inputs, and enhancing biodiversity. Within this framework, tree-based and multi-tier farming systems play a pivotal role in optimizing land use and ensuring environmental balance. These models are especially beneficial for small and marginal farmers in India’s varied agroclimatic zones, offering resilience, productivity, and sustainability.
Tree-based farming incorporates fruit or timber trees—like mango or guava— intercropped with pulses, vegetables, and herbs. This mimics forest ecosystems where diverse species coexist, supporting one another. Trees improve soil quality through leaf litter, reduce erosion, and help conserve moisture. Their canopy creates favorable microclimates for understory crops.
Multi-tier systems structure crops by height: tall trees form the top layer, followed by medium-height plants such as papaya, bushy crops like chillies, and ground-level creepers such as pumpkin. This vertical arrangement maximizes sunlight use and space efficiency, improving overall yield per unit area.
These systems enhance soil fertility, promote nutrient recycling, and reduce crop vulnerability to pests and climate extremes. Practices like mulching, intercropping, and the use of Jeevamrit and Beejamrit are seamlessly integrated, reinforcing soil health and sustainability. Together, they offer a regenerative, income-diversifying strategy for natural farmers across India.

A. Gram’s Staining
Introduction
The most widely used staining procedure in microbiology is the Gram stain, discovered by the Danish scientist and physician Hans Christian Joachim Gram in 1884. Gram staining is a differential staining technique that differentiates bacteria into two groups: gram-positives and gram-negatives. The procedure is based on the ability of microorganisms to retain color of the stains used during the gram stain reaction. Gram-negative bacteria are decolorized by the alcohol, losing the color of the primary stain, purple. Gram positive bacteria are not decolorized by alcohol and will remain as purple. After decolorization step, a counterstain is used to impart a pink color to the decolorized gramnegative organisms.
The Gram stain procedure enables bacteria to retain color of the stains, based on the differences in the chemical and physical properties of the cell wall.

Agriculturally, soil is the region which supports the plant life by providing mechanical support and nutrients required for growth. From the microbiologist view point, soil is one of the most dynamic sites of biological interactions in the nature. Soil is an admixture of five major components viz. organic matter, mineral matter, soil-air, soil water and soil microorganisms/living organisms. The amount/ proposition of these components varies with locality and climate.

The soil organisms are broadly classified in two group’s viz. soil flora and soil fauna, the detailed classification of which is as follows.

a) Microflora Bacteria, Fungi, Molds, Yeast, Mushroom, Actinomycetes, Streptomyces, Algae e.g. BGA, Yellow Green algae, Golden brown algae.

5.1 Fundamentals of Plant Nomenclature
(A) Plant Nomenclature
5.1.1 Definitions
Assignment of definite names to plants is called nomenclature. In the present botanical world, the nomenclature involves the principles governed by rules formulated and adopted by International Botanical Congresses. The rules developed by IBC are listed formally in a code called International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Voss et al., 1983), abbreviated as ICBN. The major goal of ICBN is to provide one correct name for each taxon. Taxa (singular, taxon) are the taxonomic groups of any rank. The ascending hierarachy of taxa include species, genus, family, order, class and division.
5.1.2 Who is a Nomenclaturist?
A nomenclaturist is a taxonomist who assigns names to new taxa, determines the right names for old taxa according to the rules of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, and finalizes the right name for a specimen according to an established system of classification.

The Red Data Book is a public document that is created for recording endangered and rare species of plants, animals, fungi as well as some local subspecies that are present in a particular region. It helps us in providing complete information for research, studies and also for monitoring the programs on rare and endangered species and their habitats. Many nations of the world have prepared Red Data Books for their biological resources. Some Red Data Books include both plants and animals whereas, generally the plants are dealt separately from animals. This book is mainly created to identify and protect those species which are on the verge of extinction (“Extinction is the process of evolution that leads to the disappearance of a population or species”).
Whereas red lists of threatened plants are being highly developed for wild plants and even replaced by green lists (Imboden, 1989) and blue lists (Gigon et al., 2000), ornamental plants still lack similar lists.
13.1 Brief History
The name of this book has its origins in Russia, it was originally known as the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation or the RDBRF. The book was based on research conducted between 1961 and 1964 by biologists in Russia. Hence, it is also called the Russian Red Data Book.

Asteraceae or Compositae is one of the largest families of flowering plants, represented by about 1,707 genera and over 23,600 species which are worldwide in distribution. Radford (1986) has mentioned the number of genera to be ‘One thousand to 2000’. About 140 of its genera and over 700 species have been reported from India. Some of the largely represented genera include Senecio (2,000+), Eupatorium (1,200), Vernonia (1,000), Hieracium (1,000), Centaurea (600), Aster (500), Helichrysum (500), Cousinia (400), Artemisia (400), Baccharis (400), Mikania (250), Bidens (230), Crepis (200), Inula (200), Erigron (200), Chrysanthemum (160), Cirsium (150), Ligularia (150), Helianthus (110), Lactuca (100), Hypochoeris (100) and Carduus (100).
In the Chrysanthemum genus, the modern autumn flowering perennial Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat is most important. The name of C. morifolium Ramat has been changed to Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev (Anderson, 1987; Heywood and Humphries, 1977 and Kitamura, 1978). Chrysanthemum (D.x grandiflora) is an internationally recognized floriculture crop. It ranks second among commercial flowers in the international market. It is known as ‘Queen of East’ in Japan while in USA, it is considered as the ‘Queen of the fall flowers’. Flowers are in great demand in landascape, for making garland, wreath, veni and religious offerings. Pot chrysanthemums are
commonly known as ‘mums’ and large flowered cultivars are used as potted plants.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) provides the highest oil yield per hectare among all oil crops (Corley and Tinker, 2008; Rival and Levang, 2014). Examining the global palm oil production statistics, which is extracted from the mesocarp of the oil palm, the total world production stands at 79.464 million tonnes. Indonesia leads the world production with 59%, while India ranks 13th with a production of 0.305 million tonnes, contributing insignificantly to the world palm oil production. Additionally, India imports about 19% of the world’s palm oil, accounting for 9.3 million tonnes, with a net worth of 11.7 billion U.S. dollars (USDA IPAD, 2024; Statista, 2024).
In this challenging scenario, expanding the cultivation area of oil palm with high-yielding, disease-resistant, and dwarf statured varieties is imperative. The National Mission on Edible Oil-Oil Palm has set a target area of 27,99,087 hectares, but the achieved area is only 3,70,028 hectares (NMEO-OP). To meet this target, obtaining quality planting material is crucial. Traditionalvegetative propagation is not viable for oil palm due to its lack of axillary branching or axillary meristem. Given its highly cross-pollinated nature and long breeding cycle, obtaining true-to-type progeny is challenging. Therefore, the importance of propagation through in vitro mass multiplication techniques in this crop cannot be overstated.

Introduction
Improved varieties, hybrids and quality seeds are considered as the basic and key inputs for the development of agriculture and horticulture. High quality seed production has been the major concern in the Indian sub-continent till 1960s. Before that, India was mostly dependent on USA for food grain. After 1960, Government of India established State Agricultural Universities in different states following “Land grant model” of USA, different ICAR Research institutes and All India Coordinated Crop Research Projects in a systematic manner to give the boost to develop large number of improved varieties with assured seed quality in all major agricultural and horticultural crops. The ultimate intention was to introduce the newly developed high yielding varieties for broad spectrum cultivation in the area of their adoption.
Importance of variety and system of its release
There are several ways and means to increase the crop production and productivity, however using genetically pure and high-quality seed is first and prime objective in agriculture/ horticulture. Govt. of India acknowledged seed as an essential commodity under essential commodities Act, 1955.

Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas under the family Convolvulaceae (Chromosome No. 2n = 6x = 90) is an important tuber crop grown mostly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Latin America, the Pacific islands, Papua New Guinea and Africa. India and China are the leading sweet potato growing countries in the world. In India, it is largely grown in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Its large, swollen, starchy, sweet-tasting, adventitious roots are used as tuberous vegetable. Orange-fleshed sweet potato, in particular, with high β carotene content has become a prominent example of the effectiveness of biofortified staple crops to combat vitamin A deficiency. Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fibers and are also known for improving gut health and digestion. It also contains a high amount of phytosterol that has a protective effect on the digestive system. Sometimes, tender leaves and shoots are consumed as a green leafy vegetable. Sweet potato tubers are used in agro-industry for the preparation of starch, alcohol and animal feed.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Sweet potato has probably been originated between the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and the mouth of the Orinoco River in Venezuela.

The genus Amaranthus is rather unique in having species which are used for vegetable, grain and ornamental purposes. Vegetable amaranth, Amaranthus spp. under the family Amaranthaceae (Chromosome No.: 2n = 2x = 32, 34) is the most common tropical leafy vegetable in Southeast Asian countries especially India, Malaysia, Indonesia, southern China and hot and humid regions of Africa. It is an excellent source of β carotene, vitamin C, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, folic acid and dietary fibre. Its protein content (20-38% based on dry matter) includes methionine and other sulphur-containing amino acids. It is cultivated throughout India however, it is a common leafy vegetable in southern states viz., Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
The phylogenetic relationship and taxonomic delimitation in the genus Amaranthus under the family Amaranthaceae are still not resolved with extreme clarity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed clear separation of vegetable and grain amaranths. The derivation of grain and vegetable amaranths represent two lines of descent from the weed progenitor. Amaranthus hybridus L. This species has spread to different tropical countries like Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Amaranthus is a cosmopolitan genus of annual or short-lived perennial plants collectively known as amaranths. Vegetable amaranth is the most common leafy vegetable crop grown in India. Several kinds of vegetable amaranths under the genus Amaranthus and belonging to different species are grown in India.

Watermelon, Citrullus lanatus under the family Cucurbitaceae (Chromosome number: 2n = 2× = 22) is an important and popular summer season crop of the USA, Middle east, Japan, Africa and India. Watermelon is primarily consumed fresh for their sweet, juicy and slightly grainy flesh and are often eaten as desserts. Watermelon is actually a nutrient dense food. It provides high levels of vitamins, minerals, andantioxidants particularly lycopene and relatively low in calories.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
The origin of watermelon was in tropical Africa perhaps in Kalahari Desert, now in Botswana. The progenitor species, Citrullus colocynthis is endemic to Africa. Wide variation of this progenitor species is also found in Rajasthan and Gujarat in India. Wild watermelon seeds have been found in Uan Muhuggiag, a prehistoric site in Libya that dates to approximately 3500 BC. Watermelon was domesticated in Africa and later it was introduced in India. From India it spread to Near East and Asia. The watermelon which was domesticated in Egypt by 2000 BC were not the sweet modern variety. The fruit flesh of wild watermelons is watery, but typically hard-textured, pale-coloured and bland or bitter. The familiar sweet dessert watermelons, C. lanatus, featuring non-bitter, tender, well-coloured flesh have a narrow genetic base, suggesting that they originated from a series of selection events in a single ancestral population.

Ridge gourd, Luffa acutangula and sponge gourd, Luffa cylindrica under the family Cucurbitaceae (Chromosome number: 2n = 2× = 26) is an important warm season fruit vegetable crop. Ridge gourd is widely cultivated in India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Egypt and other parts of Africa. Sponge gourd is now cultivated in all tropical regions of the world. It was an important crop used for industrial filters until World War II and Japan cultivated the best crop for this purpose. The main commercial production areas of sponge gourd today are China, Korea, India, Japan, Central America and Brazil. Immature fruits of ridge gourd and sponge gourd are eaten as a vegetable and at maturity both become very fibrous. The word luffa or ‘loofah’ is of Arabic origin and the sponge characteristic of the crop has been described in old Egyptian writings.
Fruits are good sources of vitamin C, riboflavin, zinc and antioxidants. It is effective in balancing blood sugar levels, help eliminate toxic waste and prevent fat accumulation. Ridge gourd also helps reduce excessive body heat during summers which can prevent many ailments.
 

Bitter gourd or Bitter melon, Momordica charantia L under the family Cucurbitaceae (Chromosome no. 2n = 2× = 22) is widely grown in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan, East Africa, the Caribbean and South America for its edible fruit. Tender fruits are widely used as cooked vegetables in a number of ways. Bitter gourd is an excellent source of vitamin C, iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium and ß carotene. The fruits contain non-toxic glycoside momordicin, which gives it bitterness and also health benefits. It also contains an insulin-like compound called Polypeptide-p or p-insulin and steroidal compound “Charantin” having hypoglycemic property.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Wild or semi-domesticated variants spread across Asia in prehistorical period, and it was probably domesticated in Southeast Asia. It has probably originated in eastern India or Indo-Burma area or southern China. Uncarbonized seed coat fragments have been tentatively identified from the spirit cave in northern Thailand however, there have been no archeological reports of bitter gourd remains in China (Marr et al, 2004).Population resequencing revealed the divergence between wild and South Asian cultivars about 6,000 years ago, followed by the separation of the Southeast Asian cultivars about 800 years ago, with the latter exhibiting more extreme trait divergence from wild progenitors and stronger signs of selection on fruit traits.

Black pepper, popularly known as the “King of spices”, is the most popular spice crop in the world, and the crop originated in the Western Ghats and Malabar coast of India. India was the centre of pepper trade from time immemorial. Recently, black pepper production in the country remained stagnant at around 90000 tonnes in the last few years. Hence, India is losing its status as a leading producer and exporter of black pepper. Kerala accounts for 75 per cent of total black pepper production in the country. It has been noted that the increase in area under cultivation is not in tune with the increase in production. Low productivity is mainly due to the incidence of pests and diseases.
Black pepper is infested by 56 species of insects in India; among these, pollu beetle, (Lanka ramakrishnae Prathapan & Viraktamath), top shoot borer (Cydia hemidoxa Meyr), scale insects (Lepidosaphes piperis and Aspidiotus destructor) are considered as major pests (Devasahayam, 2000).
It is one of the most destructive pests of black pepper and the infestation is severe in plains of Malabar region (20-30 %) and low in hilly tracts (Wayanad and Idukki) and South Kerala.

Transcription: Transcription is the first step of gene expression, where a particular segment
of DNA is copied into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. During transcription, one
of the two DNA strands serves as a template for the formation of a complementary RNA
strand, This newly synthesized RNA strand, known as pre-mRNA, undergoes further
processing, including splicing, capping, and addition of a poly-A tail, to become mature
mRNA, which is then exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells. In
contrast, in prokaryotes, both transcription and translation occur within the cytoplasm.

Classification of Organisms
Over the years, scientists have developed several systems for the classification of organisms. Greek phlosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC) grouped life forms as either plants or animals. Microscopic organisms were unknown at that time. Fungi were included in plants. Aristotle’s system distinguished only between plants and animals on the basis of movement, feeding mechanism, and growth patterns. In 1735, Carolus Linnaeus formalized the use of two Latin names to identify each organism, a system called Binomial nomenclature. He grouped closely related organisms and introduced the modern classification groups: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Abstract
Understanding genetic diversity is essential for achieving genetic improvement and conservation of grain legumes. These crops serve as important pulses grown and consumed all over the world, especially in Africa, South East Asia and America. Legumes serve as a good source of carbohydrates, oil, fibre and proteins. Grain legumes are a major source of food and nutrition globally. However, it has not been possible to enhance gain legume production to the required level, primarily due to the narrow genetic base of most of the legume crops, coupled with changing climatic conditions. Most grain legumes are lacking in desired plant ideotypes and resistance sources for various biotic and abiotic stresses. The genetic diversity conserved in gene banks globally is a major resource for crop breeding programs, but it
is utilized only marginally. Therefore, in order to broaden the genetic base of grain legume crops and enhance the genetic gains made in improvement programs, conventional approaches and modern scientific tools should be integrated in a phased and carefully judged manner. The first phase should focus on the search for desired traits and the infusion of diversity into the cultivated gene pool through use of landraces and CWRs. The second phase should focus on the utilization of advanced selection tools, such as genomics, high-throughput precision phenotyping, and artificial intelligence, to exploit the hidden potential of the available genetic diversity; and the third phase should involve technologies such as mutational breeding, genome editing, and transgenic technologies to improve, modify any novel or alien traits that are not available in the entire crop gene pool. We presume that enrichment of the genetic diversity of cultivated grain legume gene pools, along with simultaneous improvements in their yield and plant type with the aid of advanced scientific tools, will enhance grain legume crop yields to the required level.

This is especially true among herbivores, animals in Polar Regions and constant physical environments, animals in specific life-history stages, and highly social animals. Various mechanisms exist, but research indicates that certain circadian pacemakers still function in animals that are active throughout the day and night. The prevalence of continuous activity in various animals and habitats, along with a wide range of underlying mechanisms, suggests a pattern of convergent evolution. The circadian system’s organizational principles and complexity allow for potential chrono-biological plasticity. Abstract
Climate change and the rapid progress of urbanization lead to abiotic stresses of frequent flooding events and pollution seriously threatening the sustainable development of modern cities. The construction of Sponge City can effectively alleviate these problems and improve a city’s resilience to environmental changes and coping with floods making them more sustainable. China was the first country to build Sponge Cities for urban flood control, rainwater harvest, ecological restoration of urban land, and water quality improvement. Many Indian cities also face the risk of flooding during monsoon and this risk is going to increase year after year in the whole nation. India is getting bruised both ways- lack of water & excess flood. So, India too needs a mission that mitigates flood risk and provides a pathway to water security. The most promising solution across the world at this time is the idea to adopt Sponge City construction. Incorporating the Sponge City idea under the area of smart city project would save countless lives and lead to the implementation of sustainable cities. The expense of making this a reality may cost some money, but these projects will provide enormous benefits. Sponge City design thus would act as a defence mechanism during rainstorms, supporting greater absorption and water retention. Thus, it leads as a pathway for sustainable Indian cities.

Arthritis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the joints, is prevalent among livestock species, particularly in older animals or those subjected to intensive farming conditions. It results in pain, reduced mobility, and diminished productivity. Herbal plants with anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities are being investigated as a result of the increased interest in natural therapies, even if treatments like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids have been utilized to manage arthritis in livestock. This chapter addresses the use of herbal plants to treat arthritis in cattle, including
a summary of the best plant-based remedies, their modes of action, and the scientific data that backs them up.
Pathophysiology of Arthritis in Livestock
Arthritis in livestock is primarily caused by joint degeneration, trauma, infection, or autoimmune disorders. The inflammation of the synovial membrane leads to the discharge of cytokines that cause inflammation, which degrade cartilage and cause pain. The condition significantly impacts the animal’s ability to move, affecting their overall well-being and productivity. In farmed animals, arthritis can lead to decreased milk production, reduced growth rates, and compromised meat quality, thus representing a significant economic loss.

While antifungal drugs are commonly used to manage these infections, concerns about drug resistance, toxicity, and sustainability have encouraged the exploration of alternative therapeutic options, particularly herbal medicine.
