Introduction

The United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organisation reported that global aquaculture is increasing by 11 percent per year and is the world’s fastest growing food-producing sector. More than 38 million people are employed in aquaculture and associated industries worldwide, and 131 aquatic species are currently being commercially cultured. In 2002, Asia led the world in the aquaculture production, with about 12.4 million tonnes, while Europe and America together produced 1.2 million tonnes.

Among the Asian countries, India ranks second in aquaculture and third in capture fisheries. Freshwater aquaculture in India is mainly based on Indian major carps (Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala) with an annual production of 1.8 million tonnes, and exotic carps, which together contribute to over 87% of the total aquaculture production of 2.2 million tonnes. Disease problems represent important constraint to the aquaculture industry. The need to control endemic diseases imposes severe year-on-year costs on producers. The advances made in the development of vaccines for diseases of Indian major carps are very meager.

Though more than 1500 species contain volatile aromatic principles, only around 50 species serve as commercial source of essential oil and aroma-chemicals. Among these, aromatic crops under large-scale cultivation hardly exceeds two dozens. Important aromatic plants of world are classified according to economic part used, growth habit, habitat, crop duration and propagation method besides usual botanical classification.

Vegetables are of short duration, have higher productivity and give more return per unit area, besides giving nutritious food to human being and can be fitted in different farming systems. They also play a major role in balancing human diet, thereby helping in alleviating hunger, poverty and malnutrition. Because of the public awareness for the significance of vegetable consumption, the demand of vegetables in the global market has increased immensely. Thus, vegetable farming is becoming profitable venture globally, opening avenues of self employment and revenue generation (Anon., 2009). At global level, India holds second position, next only to China in vegetables production with a share of about 14%. The present annual vegetables production of country is about 175 million tons from an area about 10.3 million ha with a productivity of 17.1 t/ha. India grows largest number of vegetables in the world, as having a spectrum of wide range of agro-climatic situations, ranging from dry temperate to humid tropics between the altitudes from sea level to snow line.

The Indian hot arid region is one of the most important arid ecosystems of the world in terms of biodiversity it possesses. This arid region spreads over 31.7 mha, occupies major part of north western India including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana, which together contribute 73% of arid region. High temperature, wind velocity, low humidity, low and erratic rainfall and high potential evapotranspiration are important characteristics of this region which narrowed down the choice for vegetables, besides permit their low productivity.

Introduction

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L) belonging to family Brassicaceae, is an herbaceous annual or biennial plant which is cultivated for its edible flower heads being are used as vegetable or salads. The broccoli plant has a broad green stalk, or stem, that give produces thick, leathery, oblong gray-blue to green in color leaves. The plant produces large branching green flower heads covered with numerous white or yellow flowers. Broccoli can be annual or biennial depending on the variety. Broccoli is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and has a reputation as super foods (Hatanaka and Ware, 2020).

It is admitted that they are susceptible to a numerous of serious diseases that leads to reduction in yield. Thus, it is the utmost requirement to control such biotic stressors in order to obtain desired quality and decent yields. The most important diseases and its control measures are being portrayed in this chapter for both home gardener and the commercial producers for cruciferous vegetables particularly broccoli (Mani et al., 2020).

In order to assess the economic value of biochar, various factors need to be taken into account, including production expenses, market demand, potential income sources, and cost reductions. The economic worth of biochar can be determined by considering these factors.

8.1 Production costs

The cost of producing biochar can differ based on various factors such as the type of material used, the scale of production, the method of pyrolysis used, and the particular operational conditions.

i. Feedstock costs

• The cost of acquiring or producing biomass feedstock includes purchasing agricultural residues, forestry waste, or other biomass sources. Additional costs such as land, seeds, fertilizers, and harvesting should be considered using dedicated energy crops.

Post-mortem (PM) examination
The core objective of post-mortem examination is to identify and eradicate defects and contaminations and thus, confirming that only meat suitable for ingestion are allowed to be passed
Facilities for post-mortem inspection
• Normal infrastructure amenities which delivers comfortable working environment and assist in presenting the carcases and its offals for PM examination
• Every inspection place on the dressing over-head line must have lights of -- 540 lux (50 foot-candle) intensity light which does not alter the normal colours
• Adequate facility for sanitising the hands, equipments and aprons should be provided
• To sterilise the knives, cleavers and saws–a water bath operating at 82 ºC
• Head, viscera and carcase are the three major inspection parts
• On moving rails, viscera from a particular animal should move little ahead of its carcase so that any abnormality in viscera could be conveyed to the carcase examiner well in time
• For precise recognition of carcases and its correlated viscera from an animal, the lines conveying the carcases and viscera should move in synchronized way
• When a carcase is declared unfit for human consumption, all its the related parts such as head, viscera, blood and hide must be collected and disposed off
• Every inspection point must have a easily accessible overhead rail line stop button

Heavy metal contamination in soils and water is a risk to environmental health, agricultural production and human well-being. Conventional remediation methods are expensive and not particularly efficient, so nanobioinoculants are being accepted as a more sustainable solution for bioremediation of heavy metals. Combinations of nanoparticles and microorganisms work together to increase the removal or immobilization of toxic metals from contaminated environments. Nanobioinoculants provide advantage of the high surface area and reactivity of nanoparticles, alongside the metabolic diversity of microbes like bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. These microbes facilitate the heavy metal detoxification through the mechanisms such as biosorption, bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and nanoparticle assisted immobilization. Mostly microbial strains have metal tolerance and the ability of biofilm formation provides further protection and play a role in sequestration of the heavy metal. Nanoparticle integration with microbes increases their resilience to perform well in harsh conditions. With these advantages nanobioinoculants are found to be a sustainable and effective way of combating heavy metal contamination in the environment. Abstract: Ornamental salvia, native to Brazil is cultivated as bedding plant in the world. Many species have horticultural, commercial and medicinal values. Continued breeding and improvement of salvia is focused on disease resistance, new flower colours, seed oil content and abiotic stress tolerance. Interspecific hybridization is hampered by genomic differences, heterostyly, self incompatibility and low seed set. Breeders have created polyploid cultivars and mutants which have high ornamental value. Continued use of these and other modern techniques will ensure creation of new phenotypes for the market.

Abstract
Microplastics, or plastic fragments smaller than 5 millimeters, have become prevalent contaminants in aquatic systems, arising from the breakdown of larger plastics, personal care products, and synthetic fabrics. Their presence disrupts marine and freshwater ecosystems by being consumed by wildlife, disturbing food webs, and polluting habitats. Additionally, microplastics can transport harmful pollutants and release toxic chemicals, worsening their environmental impact. Identifying these particles involves sophisticated methods such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis, although differentiating them from other particulates remains challenging. Major sources include direct releases, the fragmentation of larger plastic waste, and atmospheric deposition, with pathways like stormwater runoff and wastewater treatment aiding their dispersal. Addressing microplastic pollution requires a combination of regulatory measures, including bans on microbeads, technological advancements such as enhanced filtration
systems, and increased public and industry engagement. Continued research is essential for developing effective solutions, understanding microplastic pathways in the environment, and assessing their long-term effects on health.

Introduction
Liposomes as Drug Delivery Vehicles
Liposomes, first described by Alec Bangham in 1961, are self-assembled vesicular structures composed of one or more lipid bilayers surrounding an aqueous core(Nakhaei et al., 2021). These lipid bilayers typically consist of natural or synthetic phospholipids, which can spontaneously form closed vesicles in an aqueous environment due to their amphiphilic nature. The resulting liposomal structure resembles a miniature cell membrane, with hydrophilic heads facing outward towards the aqueous environment and hydrophobic tails facing inward, forming the bilayer structure(Nogueira, Gomes, Preto, & Cavaco-Paulo, 2015). Liposomes are important in the field of drug delivery due to their unique structural properties, which enable them to encapsulate a wide range of therapeutic agents, including hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and amphiphilic compounds. (Guimarães, Cavaco-Paulo, & Nogueira, 2021) The size of liposomes can vary from tens to hundreds of nanometers, making them suitable for both systemic and targeted drug delivery applications. Liposomes can be formulated to exhibit specific properties such as prolonged circulation time, enhanced stability and targeted delivery.(Simões, Moreira, Fonseca, Düzgünes, & De Lima, 2004) The versatility of liposomes is due to their ability to encapsulate drugs within the aqueous core, embed drugs within the lipid bilayers, or attach drugs onto the liposomal surface through chemical conjugation or targeting ligands. This flexibility allows for the development of multifunctional liposomal formulations capable of encapsulating multiple drugs which facilitate combination therapy and theranostic applications.(Cheng et al., 2021; Eloy et al., 2014) Liposomes also offer several advantages over conventional drug delivery systems, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. These characteristics minimize the risk of adverse reactions and systemic toxicity which makes the liposomes suitable for repeated dosing and long-term therapeutic applications.(Al-Jamal & Kostarelos, 2011; Alavi, Karimi, & Safaei, 2017; Goyal et al., 2005) However, liposomal drug delivery systems are also associated with several challenges which include issues related to stability, scalability, and manufacturing consistency.(Kraft, Freeling, Wang, & Ho, 2014)

AI-driven animal husbandry is advancing through machine learning, computer vision, IoT, big-data analytics, wearable devices and automated equipment. This chapter considers future applications for monitoring animal health, behaviour, nutrition, reproduction and environmental conditions. Predictive systems can support early disease detection, precision feeding, improved breeding and reduced production costs. However, high implementation costs, data privacy, inadequate infrastructure and limited digital knowledge remain significant obstacles, particularly in developing regions. Future research should prioritize affordable, user-friendly and explainable technologies suited to smallholders. Ethical AI, climate adaptation, multimodal data integration, omics analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration among animal scientists, engineers, policymakers and farmers are identified as essential research directions.

Small ruminants is a composite term used for sheep and goats. Throughout the developing countries, small ruminants make a very valuable contribution, especially to the poor in the rural areas. These contributions range from precious animal proteins (meat and milk) to fibre and skins, draught power in the highlands, food security and stable households. By and large, the importance and extent of the contributions are inadequately understood as a consequence of which these valuable genetic resources continue to be generally neglected. Research and development investments to improve the relatively low level of contribution do not match their potential importance, the contribution to nutritional security and livelihoods of the poor in rural areas. Species like goat and sheep are of short-generation interval, have a high prolificacy rate and require less land, investment and operational expenses and are better suited to the resource endowment of the poor.

6.1 Introduction

This chapter describes the development of data logger of agricultural field parameter monitoring system with LabVIEW. The system comprises of two sections- Fields device and data logger. Field device comprises of Arduino, smoke detector (for sensing hazardous gases), soil moisture sensor, temperature sensor, humidity sensor, water level sensor, battery, display unit, 2.4 GHz RF modem. Data logger comprises of Arduino, display unit, 2.4 GHz RF modem, power supply, PC with LabVIEW. The system is designed to monitor the environment and agriculture field parameters. The field device is designed to collect all physical parameters and communicate it to the receiver end with LabVIEW. For establishing communication between two sections 2.4GHz RF modem is used, which can be replaced with any other modem also.Fig.6.1 shows block diagram of field device and Fig.6.2shows block diagram of data logger.Table.6.1 & Table.6.2 shows the component list required to develop the field device and data logger.

Ber (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.) is one of the most ancient and important fruit crops. It is considered as the “King of arid zone fruits”, due to its adaptations to tolerate the biotic and abiotic stresses prevailing under rainfed conditions (Anbu et al., 2009). It is also called as desert apple, jujube, Badari (Sanskrit), Chinee apple, Ber (Hindi), Kul or Boroi (Bengali), Indian plum, Boroi, Beri, Permseret (Anguilla) etc. It is a tropical fruit tree that belongs to the family Rhamnaceae. Ber is rich in amino acids, protein, sugar, calcium, phosphorus, carbohydrates, iron, vitamin A, ascorbic acid. The fruit contains from 70 and 165 mg ascorbic acid per 100 gm of pulp, which is two to four times higher than the vitamin C content of citrus fruits. The mineral content of phosphorus, calcium and iron in Z. mauritiana fruit is also reported as being higher than in apples and even oranges (Morton et al., 1987, Jawanda and Bal,1978).

Conventional crop breeding requires a substantial investment of time, space, and resources for the selection process and the subsequent crossing of desired plants. The time taken for the complete seed-to-seed cycle is a critical constraint in the advancement of plant research and breeding. The concept of speed breeding holds the promise of diminishing the duration necessary for the entire process of cultivar development, from creation to introduction and eventual commercial availability, thereby enhancing the improvement of both food and industrial crops. It revolves around optimizing conditions such as light intensity, temperature, and daylight duration (22-hour light, 22°C day/17°C night, and high light intensity). This approach enhances photosynthesis, triggering early flowering, and, in combination with yearly seed collection. The adoption of speed breeding shows promises in realizing nutritional security and promoting sustainable agriculture for the future rising population. The technique’s integration with advanced genomics and gene editing opens doors to precise trait incorporation. Moreover, speed breeding reduces resource consumption, aligning with sustainability goals. As local adaptations become feasible, it empowers diverse regions.

Cattleya belongs to the family Orchidaceae. It is highly important in floriculture and has been cultivated since the 19^th century. The name “Cattleya” was given in the honour of “Sir William Cattley”. Cattleyas have earned the reputation as the “Queen of Orchids” and are known to the public as the ultimate in floral corsages. While no longer the reigning queen of the orchid floral industry it is difficult not to be impressed by a well-flowered Cattleya. No longer limited to white and various shades of lavender and purple, high quality flowers occur in all colours except true blue and black and in a wide range of plant sizes. They are widely known for their large, showy flowers and were used extensively in hybridization for the cut-flower trade until the 1980s when pot plants became more popular.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

The genus was named in 1824 by John Lindley after Sir William Cattley who received and was the first to bloom a specimen of Cattleya labiata. William Swainson had discovered the new plant in Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1817 and shipped to the Glasgow Botanic Gardens for identification. After the first importation from Mr. Swainson, no more plants similar to the original Cattleya labiata were discovered for many decades, although many varieties of this species were found. Each variety differed in some way from the plant of Mr. Cattley, either in colour, blooming season or some similar horticultural aspect. Brazil is the centre of distribution, where more than half the species are found (Pabst and Dungs, 1975 and Cruz et al., 2003). They are found naturally only in the western hemisphere, occurring along with Laelias in three major regions of Tropical America i.e. Mexico and Guatemala, northern part of South America from the western Cordilleras of Colombia to British Guiana and the maritime provinces of southern Brazil. Within these three large regions are found most of the species of Cattleya except for C. dowiana in Costa Rica and C. skinneri var. autumnalis from Panama. The plants occur at considerable elevation where the mean temperature is much lower than the mean temperature for the latitude at sea level.

Water, of its very nature, as it occurs automatically in the process of cosmic evolution, is fit, with a fitness no less marvelous and varied than that fitness of the organism which has been won by the process of adaptation in the course of organic evolution.

WATER IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR ALL LIVING ORGANISMS

The evidence:

Most organisms are comprised of at least 70% or more water. Some plants, like a head of lettuce, are made up of nearly 95% water;

When organisms go dormant, they loose most of their water. For example, seeds and buds are typically less than 10% water, as are desiccated rotifers, nematodes and yeast cells;

Earth is the water planet (that’s why astronomers get so excited about finding water in space).

Water is the limiting resource for crop productivity in most agricultural systems.

Introduction

The global aquaculture and fishery industry is a substantial business, valued at USD 281.5 billion, yielding an impressive 122.6 million tons of aquatic products in 2020 (FAO, 2022). Asia is the largest aquaculture producer, contributing to almost 91.6% of the world's total production (FAO, 2022). Forecasts indicate that aquatic animal production is poised to grow by an additional 14% by 2030 (FAO, 2022). Despite this growth, there remains a pressing need for technological advancements to address critical challenges like water pollution, disease outbreaks, the quality of breeding stock and juvenile fish, and inadequate management practices (Fearghal, 2019; Michael, 2019).

Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal disease of skin affecting animals characterized by popular skin lesions in circular form discharging serus exudate.

Etiology

• Microsporum canis- dogs

• Trichophyton verrucosum- bovines

• T. equinum- horses

Pathogenesis

The fungi enter in skin through abrasion and the hyphae appear in stratum corneum after germination and invade the hair follicles. The hyphae growth and spore formation in stratum corneum leads to hyperkeratosis and the fungus spreads centrifugally from the point of primary invasion leading to ring shaped lesion (Fig.8.1).
