Introduction
Waterlogging refers to the accumulation of excessive water in the root zone, leading to anaerobic conditions. This surplus water hampers the exchange of gases with the atmosphere, and biological processes deplete the oxygen supply in both soil and water, resulting in anaerobiosis, anoxia, or oxygen deficiency. In India, approximately 11.6 million hectares, constituting 8.3% of its net sown area, are affected by waterlogging (Planning Commission, 2011). According to Brundtland and Khalid (1987), available estimates indicate an annual global loss of 1.5 million hectares of irrigated land due to salinity and waterlogging. Regrettably, data regarding the occurrence and extent of these issues are inconsistent and incomplete. More recent estimates, provided by Datta and Joshi (1992), range from 5.5 million to 13 million hectares. After conducting a comprehensive global survey, it has been determined that submerged and waterlogged soils cover approximately 5 to 7% of the Earth’s land surface. The total area of waterlogged soil worldwide is estimated to be around 700 to 1000 million hectares. Tropical swamps, rice fields, and floodplains collectively represent nearly 14%, 12%, and 10% of the total waterlogged area, respectively. In India, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh have the highest concentration of waterlogged soil, with an estimated total area of one million hectares. The eastern region bears a significant portion of this burden, with over 20% of the affected land suffering from surface waterlogging, which severely diminishes productivity. Waterlogging is characterized by the soil becoming unproductive and infertile due to excess moisture, creating anaerobic conditions known as waterlogged soils. Waterlogged soil presents a significant challenge to agricultural productivity and soil health, characterized by excessive water saturation that restricts oxygen availability to plant roots. In this chapter, we delve into the multifaceted aspects of waterlogged soil, exploring its causes, defining characteristics, and far-reaching consequences. Introduction
Water is one of the most vital natural resources for sustaining life on Earth. However, its availability is not uniform across the planet, and the growing demand for freshwater in the face of climate change, population growth, and industrial development has raised serious concerns about the future of water resources. In 2024, the global water landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, shaped by shifting environmental patterns, technological advances, and policy responses to water scarcity. Water resources refer to the natural sources of water that can be utilized for various purposes, including water supply. Approximately 97% of the Earth’s water is saline, found primarily in oceans, while only about 2.5% is fresh water, but only a small portion of this is accessible. The majority of freshwater is locked in glaciers, ice caps, and deep underground aquifers. Less than 1% of Earth’s freshwater are readily available in rivers, lakes, and accessible groundwater for human use. Of this small fraction, nearly two-thirds is locked in glaciers and polar ice caps. The remaining unfrozen fresh water exists predominantly as groundwater, with only a small percentage available as surface water in rivers, lakes, and atmospheric moisture. The primary natural sources of freshwater include surface water, underflow in riverbeds, groundwater, and frozen water in glaciers. In addition to these, artificial sources such as treated wastewater (reclaimed water) and desalinated seawater are increasingly being used to supplement the global freshwater supply, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. As agriculture accounts for approximately 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, the management and quality of irrigation water are vital for sustaining food production and maintaining the health of ecosystems. Water is essential not only for basic plant functions, such as photosynthesis and nutrient absorption, but also for controlling temperature and supporting soil structure. In regions where rainfall is insufficient or irregular, irrigation provides a reliable source of water to meet the needs of crops throughout their growth cycle.

Introduction
Accurate and detailed information on the geographical location, aerial extent, and spatial distribution of wastelands is crucial for their efficient management and sustainable rehabilitation. Among modern resource assessment tools, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as powerful technologies for detecting, evaluating, mapping, and monitoring degraded lands. Space-borne multispectral imagery, with its ability to provide large-scale, repetitive coverage, has proven particularly effective in identifying salt-affected soils and waterlogged areas in a timely and cost-efficient manner. In visual interpretation of satellite data, regions with high soil moisture and surface waterlogging appear as dark grey to black, indicating areas prone to water stagnation. To analyze the spatial dynamics of wastelands and assess the effectiveness of high-resolution satellite imagery, IRS P6 satellite data (23.5 m resolution) alongside topographical maps (1:50,000 scale) are commonly used. Given the dynamic nature of wastelands, multi-temporal satellite data is essential for precise delineation. These images must be geo-referenced within a unified coordinate system for consistency. The Planning Commission of India has endorsed GIS as an indispensable tool for land-use planning and wasteland development, facilitating treatment area identification, landuse trade-off analysis, and impact assessment simulations. Recognizing the importance of wasteland management in national development, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) initiated a GIS-based wasteland mapping project in 1991, building upon earlier efforts by the Department of Science (1986) under the National Wasteland Identification Project, which mapped 147 districts at a 1:50,000 scale. A Task Force was established to develop a standardized classification system, later approved by the Planning Commission, categorizing wastelands into:

Rivers are the most important system for water, for irrigation and human settlement. Historically, civilizations always nucleated near rivers, and latter also had social and religious significance. Rivers in India are considered holy and play the most important part in the lives of people, fauna & flora and the future environmental system. The Ganga Basin is the largest river basin in India which includes the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Ghagra, the Gandak, the Kaveribasin etc. Compared to these, the Vishwamitri River, situated between Mahi River in North and Narmada River in South in Central Gujarat is a small seasonal river but it is very important for the city of Vadodara and Central Gujarat region. This seasonal river originates from Pavagadh hills and flows east to west. It is a typical small river with the kind of problems in most rivers in India and other countries – liquid and solid wastes, enouncements, blocking of water ways, floods in monsoon months and dry dumping basin during most other months etc.
RIVERS & THEIR REVIVAL
River basin planning and watershed management were the centerpieces of water resource planning at the dawn of the era. For most of the century, however, natural resource policies and pressures led to watershed degradation. Today, the resources value of watershed ecosystems are being rediscovered. Watershed management reflects the recognition that we can only sustain biodiversity by managing the future ecosystem.

All agriculture universities have three main Directorates – Education, Research and Extension of the three, I have often observed that Extension Department comes in for maximum criticism. ‘Loose links’ and need to do much more in transfer of knowledge and technology are frequently emphasized at various levels – especially in meetings with farmers groups. This is understandable – as it is said that less than 10% - often less than 6% of lab scale knowledge and development reach the farmers fields in developing countries and even in many ‘developed’ counties. The situation is much more challenging when we consider a large population of small and marginal farmers – who as we saw can play extremely important role in eco-agriculture. A large percent of such farmers – women and men are practicing eco friendly agriculture without realizing it. Their ‘ignorance’ can be converted in to advantage and new opportunity. The age old extension practice of reaching farmers through meetings, visit , seminars, camps, demonstrations all have limitations and need to be ‘scaled up’. New developments in information and communication Technology offer a great opportunity for a big jump in reaching the unreached. Again to alarge population of ‘Green Revolution’ – there is a new hope and opportunity.
ICT in Agriculture
The potential for using ICT in agriculture can be divided broadly under two heads (1) as a tool for direct contribution to agricultural productivity and (2) as an empowering tool for the farmer to take and quality decisions. There have been several excellent examples of practical use of ICT in Agriculture and expectations are rising such that a major transformation

In the last several decades many international forums and institutions have discussed and agreed that food and water security are the most important issues for the future. The damage to the ecology directly affects the food, land, water, health and the livelihood. Agricultural progress serves as the best way to fight poverty, hunger and livelihood problems. Though in the last few decades, billions of pages about hunger, food and water security have been written, thousands of conferences have been organized, the urgency of action plans and creating holistic models is the most important need. For this, we must require bold reforms and action oriented programs which can reach the smallest farmers and give an optimistic signal rather than a despondent picture. Developmental models that are holistic and close to nature, sustainable and based on inclusiveness considering ‘unto the last’ women and man are the need of the day. Land and water together with biodiversity and atmosphere conditions are the foundations for sustainable food security. The ecological damage to these foundations are leading to lowering of productivity and livelihood. This will further aggregate with the threat of climate changes such as temperature, rain falls and sea level rise. As per the exercise by World Food Program, it is indicated that the green revolution states like Punjab and Haryana may become food insecure in another 20 years. Drought Early Warning Systems (DEWS) form the essential foundation for effective and proactive drought management strategies. These systems are crucial in facilitating a fundamental shift from reactive approaches, where responses are implemented after the onset of a crisis, to proactive risk reduction measures that aim to anticipate and mitigate the adverse effects of drought before they fully materialize. By providing timely and accurate information about impending drought conditions, DEWS empower governments, communities, and individuals to make informed decisions and take preemptive actions, thereby minimizing the potential economic, social, and ecosystem losses associated with these events (Fig.6.1). Recognizing the risks posed by drought in a timely manner is of paramount importance for ensuring an effective and comprehensive response that can alleviate suffering and reduce overall vulnerability. The implementation of robust drought early warning systems plays a critical role in minimizing the negative consequences of drought and building longterm resilience to this recurring natural hazard.

These coatings, derived from renewable sources, like polysaccharides (e.g., chitosan, starch, cellulose), proteins (casein, gelatin), and lipids (wax, shellac), have proven to be biodegradable and consumer-friendly alternatives to synthetic polymers. 13.1.2 Antimicrobial Properties and How They Work • Antimicrobial coatings are crucial in slowing down spoilage and extending the shelf life of perishable foods. They work by disrupting cell membranes, inhibiting cell processes, and creating oxidative stress in microbes. This is achieved through natural antimicrobials like essential oils (e.g., oregano, thyme, clove), plant extracts, and organic acids; inorganic agents like silver nanoparticles, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide; and microbial-derived substances like nisin, lysozyme, and bacteriocins (Yu, Z et al ., 2022)

Recyclable Packaging Definition: Designed to be collected, processed, and used again in manufacturing, thus reducing reliance on new, raw materials. OVERVIEW OF CANNING MACHINERIES
Canning is a food preservation method where selected raw materials are prepared, packed into containers such as tin, glass, or plastic jars, and sealed airtight. The contents are then heated to a sufficient temperature to destroy spoilage and pathogenic agents within the container, followed by rapid cooling to prevent overcooking. Canning extends the shelf life of foods, ranging typically from one to five years, with some products like freeze-dried lentils lasting up to 30 years.
Can Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment
• Can Body Reformer: Can bodies are often supplied collapsed to save space and ease transportation. The can body reformer shapes them into cylindrical forms, preparing them for further processing.
• Flanger: The cylindrical can bodies are flanged by the flanger, which has two flanging dyes. These dyes form grooves at the edges, preparing the cans for sealing.
• Seaming Machine: The seaming machine is used to close the open end of the can. It features a base plate to hold the can and an upper plate that presses the lid onto the can. The machine uses two seaming rollers (first and second) to seal the can tightly.
• Can Leakage Tester: After sealing, the cans are tested for leakage by immersion in water. If any leakage is detected due to improper sealing, it indicates that the can is faulty.
• Flange Rectifier: Cans that have been bent, deformed, or crushed during the flanging process are rectified using the flange rectifier machine, ensuring the cans are in proper shape for sealing.
• Can Coding Machine (Embossing Machine): This machine embosses codes on the cans, which include the product name, manufacturer details, and production date. It ensures proper identification and traceability of the product.c

Introduction
Cardiovascular system consists of heart and blood vessels which include both arteries and veins. The formation of blood vessels occurs in two stages-vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Blood islands are formed on the yolk sac by clusters of mesodermal cells. Vasculogenesis i.e., formation of blood vessels starts during third week of gestation in the blood islands. It starts first in the yolk sac and later in the allantois. Angiogenesis describes budding and sprouting of new vessels from the existing vessels. The adult heart is a modified blood vessel. The cardiogenic plate lies ventral to the pericardial coelom in the third week gestation. The position gets reversed with the forward growth of the head and folding of the embryo. Two endocardial tubes appear by the end of 6 to 7 somite stage which fuse to form the primitive heart in the 8 to 9 somite stage. The parts of the endocardial tube are- sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle, bulbus cordis and truncus arteriosus. The four chambered heart is formed by the formation of endocardial cushions, interatrial septum, interventricular septum and spiral septum. The interatrial septum includes the formation of septum primum and septum secundum. Oxygenated blood from the placenta enters the embryo by a large umbilical vein which enters the liver of the developing embryo. It is conveyed to the posterior vena cava through ductus venosus. The blood from the vena cava enters the right atrium which is sent to the left atrium through foramen ovale. Blood then enters the left ventricle and transmitted to all the parts through the aorta) The umbilical arteries arising from the aorta transport blood to placenta for oxygenation. After birth, lungs become functional as the placental circulation ceases. The formation of arterial system involves the modification of aortic arches, ventral aorta, dorsal aorta and its dorsal, ventral and lateral branches. Aortic arches appear sequentially and connect cranial portions of dorsal aorta with ventral aorta)The venous system is derived from the remnants of the cardinal system and vitelline veins and to a lesser extent the umbilical veins.

Introduction
The development of the respiratory system in animals is a crucial process that begins early during embryogenesis. The respiratory system, responsible for gas exchange, develops from the endoderm of the early embryo, which is one of the three germ layers. Specifically, the respiratory tract develops as an outgrowth from the primitive gut tube (foregut). This process involves complex interactions of molecular signalling, tissue differentiation, and organ morphogenesis.
Key Stages of Respiratory System Development
1. Formation of the Respiratory Primordium
The respiratory system originates from the laryngotracheal groove, which appears on the ventral wall of the primitive foregut. This groove eventually forms the laryngotracheal tube, which serves as the foundation for the respiratory tract.
2. Division of the Foregut
The foregut is divided into two regions: The dorsal portion (oesophagus) for the digestive system. The ventral portion (laryngotracheal tube) for the respiratory system. This separation is achieved by the formation of the tracheoesophageal septum.
3. Development of the Trachea and Lung Buds
The laryngotracheal tube elongates and gives rise to the trachea) At its distal end, two lung buds form, which will develop into the bronchi and lungs. These lung buds expand, branch, and grow into the surrounding mesenchyme, a process called branching morphogenesis.

The urinary system comprises of two kidneys, two ureters, a urinary bladder, and a urethra) The latter is shared by the genital organs.

Mesonephros: - Pronephric duct becomes mesonephric duct Distal to the pronephric tubules appear mesonephric tubules that surround tufts of blood vessels (glomeruli), but no loop of Henle is formed Blood is transported to mesonephric tubules, filtrate is transported to the mesonephric duct and finally to the urogenital portion of the cloaca
Metanephros: - Metanephric bud (ureteric bud) Metanephric blastema
• Bud gives rise to the ureter, the pelvis of the kidney, and collecting tubules.
• Blastema gives rise to nephrons.
The internal structure of the kidney varies among species. It is determined by the number and size of calyces which branch from the renal pelvis. Each calyx forms the base of a renal lobe (renal pyramid). All mammalian kidneys begin as multipyramidal (multilobular) structures, but lobules fuse to varying degrees, depending upon the species. (Note, this multilobulation is maintained in the histological structures)

The presence of a Y or X chromosome influences sexual differentiation and the development of reproductive organs. The reproductive system comprises the gonads, genital ducts, external genitalia, and gonad descent. Development of reproductive system is initiated in gonads which differentiate into ovary or testis. The formation of genital ducts and glands occur later. Differentiation of reproductive system is a complex process which involves a number of different mechanisms operating at several stages of development. It occurs only after the arrival of primordial germ cells. First, the gonads undergo an indifferent stage before differentiating into the testes and ovaries. Thereafter, the sexual differentiation of the genital ducts is determined by the presence or absence of testosterone and Anti-Müllerian hormone, both of which influence the outcome of the mesonephric and paramesonephric ducts. Then sexual distinction of the external genitalia is also determined by hormonal secretions, or lack thereof and finally, the gonads descend primarily due to the shortening of the gubernaculum. Importantly, the development of the reproductive system is directly related to that of the urinary system. Both systems develop from common intermediate mesoderm and their excretory ducts terminate in a common cavity known as cloaca) Two important ducts develop, i.e. wolffian duct (in males) and mullerian duct (in females). Mesonephric duct which is also known as Wolffian duct, originates from pronephric duct. Pronephric duct continues to grow caudally till it opens into the ventral part of the cloaca. Beyond pronephros (primitive kidney), it is called mesonephric duct. In males, this duct persists and forms epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicle. In females, this duct undergoes atrophy. Shortly after the formation of Wolffian duct, a 2nd pair of duct develops i.e. Mullerian duct. Each arises on the lateral aspect of the corresponding Wolffian duct as a tubular invagination of the cells lining the abdominal cavity. Mullerian duct opens on cloaca between the orifices of Wolffian ducts. In females, mullerian duct persist and undergo further development. Gonads develops from 3 important sources, namely mesothelium lining posterior abdominal wall, underlying mesenchyme (Embryonic CT) and primordial Germ Cells

The development of the head and neck in embryos involves the formation of two primary sections at the cephalic (head) end) These include:
1. Neural Portion: This part consists of the brain, eyes, and internal ears, along with their supportive structures. In early embryonic stages, the neural region is larger and more prominent. Even as the face develops, the neural portion retains a dominant role.
2. Facial or Visceral Portion: This section encompasses the upper ends of the alimentary (digestive) and respiratory tracts. As the embryo matures, the nose and jaws undergo differentiation and growth, reducing the initial size difference between the neural and facial portions.
Pharyngeal (Branchial) Arches and Their Role
The formation of the face and neck is closely linked with the development of the pharyngeal (branchial) arches. These arches appear as bar-like ridges with intervening grooves on the sides of the embryonic head around the fourth week of gestation. Though similar to the gill arches in fish, these structures in mammals do not develop respiratory functions. Instead, they transform into various permanent structures of the adult face and neck.
• Formation of Pharyngeal Arches and Grooves: Five pairs of pharyngeal arches typically develop, separated by four ectodermal grooves known as pharyngeal grooves. Underneath these grooves, the pharyngeal endoderm pushes the mesenchyme outward, forming pharyngeal pouches.

• Role of Pharyngeal Arches in Facial Formation: The first pharyngeal arch on each side splits into an upper maxillary and lower mandibular process, forming the basis of the face. The second and third arches play essential roles in forming neck structures.

The embryonic tissue which contributes for development of eye and its adnexa are:

Development of eye begins simultaneously with the development of brain by the process of neurulation. Neural tube is lined by neuroectoderm and the exterior of embryo lined by surface ectoderm. Neural crest cells, population of specialized mesenchymal cells develop from the lateral border of the neural fold and do not participate in the formation of neural tube. These neural crest cells migrate under the surface ectoderm peripherally and populating the region around the optic vesicle and form the future all connective tissue of structure of eye.

The optic sulci are visible as paired evaginations of the forebrain neural ectoderm on day 13 of gestation in the dog. The outpouching on either side of optic field of diencephalon (caudal part of prosencephalon) called optic vesicle which attached to the diencephalon by optic stalk. In dog, it appears at the gestation age of day 15. Each optic vesicle grows laterally until it comes into contact with the surface ectoderm. The surface ectoderm become thickened to form the lens placode near the optic vesicle. This lens placode invaginates into the optic vesicles and form lens vesicle, which later on loses it contact with the surface ectoderm. It was revealed that elevatedpH levels in the water, resulting from the use ofcaustic chemicals such assoda ash and caustic soda in industrial processes, were associated with skinirritation and sores. Emotional health depends upon a man’s emotional wellbeing, which is based on our self-concept, and self-esteem, that is how we feel about ourselves and behavior which is appropriate and healthy.

For the maintenance of mental health, positive behavior or positivity in life is a very essential trait. Positive behavior helps develop love, mental peace, harmony, cordiality, happiness, and better inter-personal relationships; whereas negative behavior is responsible for creating animosity, hatred, fear and anger among us, which adversely affects our mental health. A person who perceives that wrong has occurred, which should be corrected, usually feels anger. Anger is a reaction against somebody, a person, an event, or an object. These substances can influence root architecture, nutrient assimilation, hormonal balance, photosynthesis, stress tolerance and disease resistance. This chapter examines the effects of different bio-stimulants on onion seed germination, vegetative growth, bulb development, yield, quality and storage life. It discusses their modes of action, application methods and integration with nutrient-management programmes. Bio-stimulants are presented as promising components of environmentally responsible and resource-efficient onion production, while areas requiring further research are identified.

Substantial onion losses occur after harvest through sprouting, rotting, physiological weight reduction and quality deterioration. Proper harvest timing, careful handling and effective curing are therefore essential for maintaining marketability and extending storage life. This chapter explains maturity indices, including appropriate levels of top fall, and compares field curing with forced-air methods.
