Introduction

Lipid nanoparticles are composed of macromolecular materials that act as adjuvants in vaccines or drug carriers, in which the drug is either dissolved, entrapped, or encapsulated. Lipid-based nanoparticles (LBNPs) have received a great attention in drug development and cancer treatment. These nanoparticles have minimal or no toxicity and can transport both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules and extend the duration of drug action through a prolonged half-life and controlled drug release. Liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), lipid—drug conjugates (LDCs), and lipid nano capsules are the most common types of LNPs (LNCs).

Lipids are a hetrogenous group of substances, widely distributed throughout the plant and animal kingdom. In plants they are present in the seeds nuts and fruits, while in the animals they are stored in adipose tissues, bone marrow and nervous tissues. Lipids are relatively insoluble in water and readily soluble in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform, carbon disulfide, benzene, hot alcohol etc. The term lipid was used by the German biochemist Bloor in 1943 for a major class of tissue components and foodstuffs.

Lipids are non polar substances of biological origin that are sparingly soluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents like chloroform, hexane, benzene etc. The word lipid comes from the Greek word lipos meaning lard or fat. The lipids present in biological systems are either hydrophobic (non polar) or amphipathic (both polar and non polar). Lipids like fats, oils or glycerophospholipids can be hydrolyzed to get fatty acids and other products. Hydrophobic nature is useful in making lipids as membranes which act as effective barriers to more polar molecules. Steroids are also considered lipids, but cannot be hydrolysed and are components of non-saponifiables in fats. Waxes, which are esters of fatty acids with long chain alcohols are also considered as lipids.

Lipids are a group of naturally occurring molecules that include fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, and K), monoglycerides, diglycerides, triglycerides, phospholipids, and others. The main biological functions of lipids include storing energy, signalling, and acting as structural components of cell membrane. Lipids have applications in the cosmetic and food industries as well as in nanotechnology.

Lipids may be broadly defined as hydrophobic or amphiphilic small molecules; the amphiphilic nature of some lipids allows them to form structures such as vesicles, liposomes, or membranes in an aqueous environment. Biological lipids originate entirely or in part from two distinct types of biochemical subunits or “building-blocks”: ketoacyl and isoperen groups. Using this approach, lipids may be divided into eight categories:fatty acids, glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, saccharolipids and polyketides (derived from condensation of ketoacyl subunits); and sterol lipids and prenol lipids (derived from condensation of isoprene subunits).

Although the term lipid is sometimes used as a synonym for fats, fats are a subgroup of lipids called triglycerides. Lipids also encompass molecules such as fatty acids and their derivatives (including tri-, di-, monoglycerides and phospholipids), as well as other sterol containing metabolites such as chloestrol. Although humans and other mammals use various biosynthetic pathways to both break down and synthesize lipids, some essential lipids cannot be made this way and must be obtained from the diet.

Lipids are a class of organic compounds composed of hydrogen (H), carbon (C), and oxygen (O) atoms. These classes of biomolecules come together to create the fundamental building blocks that shape and govern the structure and functionality of living cells. The term lipid was used by the German biochemist Wilhem Bloor in 1943. Lipids are heterogeneous groups of substances that are insoluble in polar (water) and soluble in non-polar (ether, benzene, and chloroform) solvents. Lipids are the esters of fatty acids and their derivatives. Lipids play a crucial role in both the plant and animal domains. They are widely distributed in plants, but lipids are primarily stored in animal adipose tissues.

Classification of lipids

Lipids are classified into four different groups, as shown below:

1. Simple lipids

2. Complex lipids

3. Derived lipids and

4. Miscellaneous lipids

Lipoma is a benign tumor of adipocytes and it is more common in dogs and mostly observed in the trunk, thigh and proximal limbs with rare presence of ulceration.

Liposarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of adipocytes in dogs. Grossly, the neoplastic cells are arranged in less circumscribed to large firm to hard (Figure 67) nodules on the dermis and the nodules noticed on the subcutis are grey white in color.

Introduction
The term “drug delivery systems” (DDSs) describes sophisticated dose forms that are utilized in the management of illness. The idea behind the design is to deliver the right quantity of medication to the diseased locations at the right time in order to maximize therapeutic efficacy while minimizing negative effects. The “3R” delivery principle—right dose, right place, and right time—is a concise way to describe it. Drug delivery technology can increase a candidate’s draggability while also enhancing the potency and safety of the medication. For example, liposomal drug delivery methods can be used to address issues with poor solubility and significant side toxicity in a variety of medications. The hazardous side effects of conventional chemotherapy medications can be greatly decreased by employing liposomal technology, which increases patient compliance (Andresen et al., 2004). Liposomes are the most widely used and researched nanocarrier for targeted medication delivery. They have improved therapies for a range of biomedical applications by stabilizing medicinal molecules, eliminating obstacles to cellular and tissue absorption, and boosting the biodistribution of compounds to specific locations in vivo. One or more concentric lipid bilayers enclosing discrete aqueous zones are described as the features of phospholipid vesicles, also known as liposomes. Due to the unique ability of liposomal systems to ensnape both lipophilic and hydrophilic molecules, a broad range of pharmaceuticals can be stored within these vesicles. Hydrophilic molecules may become trapped in the aqueous center of the bilayer membrane when hydrophobic molecules are introduced into it (Antohe et al., 2004).
There are many potentials uses for liposomes, and some recent reviews have offered useful details. In order to address the ongoing demand for the R&D of novel liposomal medications, significant efforts must be done. There are still some unanswered questions in this field. This article will summarize technological advancements, address issues, and explore the future of pharmaceutical liposomal delivery by focusing on three key areas: effective application, overcoming obstacles, and the move from idea to clinical application (Allen et al., 2013). Additionally, because of the large aqueous center and biocompatible lipid exterior, a variety of macromolecules, including as DNA, proteins, and imaging agents, can be administered.
Liposomes are a drug delivery technique that have several advantages, including biocompatibility, the capability to self-assemble, a large drug payload, and a range of physicochemical and biophysical properties that may be modified to control their biological features (Allen, 1994).
Among the features that characterize liposomal formulations and ascertain their durability in vitro and in vivo are particle size, charge, lamellar number, lipid content, and surface modification with polymers and ligands. Encapsulated compounds are protected from dilution, degradation, and early inactivation in the circulation by liposomes. Liposomes are generally believed to be low toxicity and pharmacologically inactive because they are frequently composed of phospholipids that occur naturally. But more and more studies are showing that liposomes are not as immunologically inactive as was once thought. Although liposomal formulations have demonstrated efficacy in vivo, their clinical translation has been gradual. The advancements, biological difficulties, biomedical uses, and translational barriers of liposomal technology will all be covered in this review (Dams et al., 2000).

9.1 Introduction

Biomass conversion is a transformative process that harnesses the energy and chemical potential of organic materials derived from living organisms. It encompasses various methods of converting biomass, including agricultural residues, forestry by-products, algae, and even waste materials, into valuable products such as biofuels, chemicals, and energy. This process is a cornerstone of sustainable resource utilization and plays a critical role in addressing environmental concerns, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and promoting a circular economy. Biomass conversion methods range from biochemical processes like fermentation and anaerobic digestion to thermochemical processes such as combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, and liquefaction. Each method employs distinct conditions, catalysts, and technologies to break down complex biomass structures and convert them into desired products.

14.1 Introduction

The green revolution brought amazing consequences in food grain production but with insufficient concern for agricultural sustainability. The availability and affordability of fossil fuel based chemical fertilizers at farm level in India have been ensured only through imports and subsidies which are largely dependent on GDP of the country. Dependence on chemicals for future agricultural needs would result in further loss in soil health, possibilities of water contamination and calculated burden on the fiscal system. Indiscriminate synthetic fertilizer usage has polluted the soil, water basins, destroyed micro-organisms and eco-friendly insects, made the crop more susceptible to diseases and depleted soil fertility at the primary levels as of today (Pindi, 2012). India is an agricultural based country.

The earlier products of bio-fertilizers were carrier (solid) based where lignite is usually added as a carrier material. Lignite is hazardous to the production workers. Also, the shelf life of carrier based bio-fertilizers is only 6 months and is difficult to transport. Liquid Biofertilizers (LBFs) on the other hand have a shelf life of minimum one year, with no health hazards to production workers and are easy to transport. Additionally, LBF can be used in drip irrigation and as a component of organic farming. The liquid Bio fertilizers are suspensions having agriculturally useful microorganisms, which fix atmospheric nitrogen and solubilize insoluble phosphates and make it available for the plants. The use of this biofertilizer is environment friendly and gives uniform results for most of the agricultural crops and directly reduces the use of chemical fertilizer by 15 to 40%. The shelf life of the liquid bio fertilizer is higher (in the range of one to two years) compared to that of solid matrix base biofertilizer.

3.1 Definition

Liquid biofertilizers are liquid formulation containing the dormant form of desired microorganisms and their nutrients along with the substances that encourage formation of resting spores or cysts for longer shelf life and tolerance to adverse conditions. The dormant form on reaching the soil, germinate to produce fresh batch of active cells. These cells grow and multiply by utilizing the carbon source in the soil or from root exudates.

“A preparation comprising requirements to preserve organisms and deliver them to the target regions to improve their biological activity” or “A consortium of micro-organisms provided with suitable medium to keep up their viability for certain period which aids in enhancing the biological activity of the target site”.

Abstract

Present implementation of mass spectrometers has allowed developing new approaches in algal research. Soft ionization techniques like atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), electrospray ionization (ESI), and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) extend the analytical possibilities of mass spectrometry (MS) beyond classical fatty acid analysis by gas chromatography (GC) with electron impact ionization (EI). New MS-based analytical methods have been developed over the last two decades for algal molecule research including membrane lipids, carotenoids, mycosporine-like amino acids and peptides.
 
MS-based Metabololomics approaches have also been used to gain insights into algal biochemistry and physiology. This review aims at highlighting the achievements in algal research gained by using these recent research tools and their future prospects.

Double flowered lisianthus are more demanded in U.S. as cut flower about 80% of lisianthus market whereas, single flowered are more dominant in Japanese and European markets. In Japan over 129 million cut stems were sold in 2001 placing it on number one position in Europe, over 122 million cut stems were sold in 2001 and placing it in top ten ranking and in the United States over 14 million cut stems were sold in 2002, it is not only popular as a cut flower but also as a bedding plant and a pot plant in market (Grueber et al., 1985, Halevy and Kofranek, 1984, Roh and Lawson, 1987, Tjia and Sheehan, 1984, Tija and Sheehan 1986, Skrzypczak et al., 1993 and Harbaugh, 2007), a plant bears 20-30 flowers per plant (Skrzypczak et al., 1993).

Lisianthus (Eustoma) is herbaceous perennial in some cases annual and biennial (Farina, 1989, Halevy and Kofranek, 1984, Wilkins and Grueber, 1983 and Harbaugh, 2007) belongs to family Gentianaceae (Oren-shamir et al., 1999) and genus “Lisianthus”, which is also used as the common name for Eustoma grandiflorum, the plant was commonly known as Lisianthus russellianus when first listed in seed catalogues in the early 1980’s in the United State, later it was given scientific name Eustoma grandiflorum (Raf.) Shinn. (synonyms Eustoma andrewsii; E. russellianum; Lisianthus russellianus) (Bailey and Baily, 1976, Everett, 1981 and Harbaugh, 2007). However, Lisianthus is also known as the Prairie gentian or Texas bluebell (Markham, 1996 and Harbaugh, 2007) and Prairie Rose (Harbaugh, 2007). Eustoma is named after the two Greek words Eu (beautiful, good, well) and stoma (mouth) (Uddin et al., 2013). It is a self compatible (Harbaugh, 2007 and Markham, 1996), diploid crop (Markham, 1996). The buds are colourless is a great disadvantage as an ornamental growth. The range of flower colours available in commercial lines is limited to white and purple, shades of cream, pink, mauve and purple (Markham, 1996 and Harbaugh, 2007).

E. grandiflorum has a set of pharmacologically active compounds and therefore can be a valuable therapeutic material, or can serve as a source of pure chemical compound, apart from its strictly ornamental uses (Skrzypczak et al., 1993).

This chapter introduces Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum), a valuable cut flower also known as Prairie Gentian and the “poor man's rose.” It discusses its origin, distribution, genetics, botanical characteristics and commercial development. The chapter covers varieties, protected cultivation, environmental requirements, propagation, nutrition, pest and disease management, harvesting, storage and vase-life enhancement. Special attention is given to its growing importance in India, particularly under protected cultivation in suitable regions.

Listening skill is key to receiving messages effectively. It is a combination of hearing what another person says and psychological involvement with the person who is talking. It requires a high level of concentration and energy. It demands that we set aside our own thoughts and agendas, put ourselves in another’s shoes and try to see the world through that person’s eyes.

Introduction

Listening is a language modality. It is one of the four skills of a language i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing. It involves an active involvement of an individual. Listening involves a sender, a message and a receiver. It is the psychological process of receiving, attending to constructing meaning from and responding to spoken and/or non verbal messages.

5.1 A great deal of research

A great deal of research has been carried out on listening in communication. According to the researchers, listening comes at top of the list of the four forms of communication

Listeria

Murray et al. (1926) first described about Listeria which was followed by Pirie et al. (1927). In India Listeriosis was first reported by Mahajan (1936) in sheep from Andhrapradesh. He recognized it as ‘circling disease’. Latter a number of reports are available from various parts of India.

Listeria has been divided into seven species with two distinct groups. Among which the Listeria monocyotgenes and Listeria ivanovii are haemolytic and pathogenic for animals. The Listeria murrayi and Listeria grayi are nonhaemolytic, rarely isolated and considered to be non pathogenic. Among which the genus L. monocytogens, being the cause of septicaemia, abortion and CNS infections in a wide range of animal species including humans.

History
L.monocytogenes first described by Murray (1926) who named it as bacterium monocytogenes because of characteristic monocytosis infection in laboratory animals. It was renamed Listerella hepatolytica by Pirie (1927) and the present name given by him in 1940. The Listeria momnocytogenes was first isolated by Gill (1929) from sheep.
Natural Habitat
Listeria species are widely distributed in the environment and can be isolated from soil, faeces, plants, decaying vegetation and silage (pH 5.5) in which the bacteria can multiply. Silage is commonly implicated in outbreaks of listeriosis in cattle and sheep. In poor quality silage the listerial numbers may reach 107 cfu/kg of silage. Asymptomatic faecal carriers occur in man and many animal species. L.monocytogens can be excreted in bovine milk. Human foods associated with listeriosis in man include soft cheeses, milk and poultry meat.

Synonyms: Circling disease, Meningoencephalitis, silage disease

It is an infectious fatal disease of wide range of animals and man characterized by encephalitis. It also causes abortion, endometritis and repeat breeding in farm animals. Historically, Listeria was first isolated in 1926 from a natural disease of rabbits characterized by mononuclear leucocytosis and therefore named as Bacillus monocytogenes by Murray and coworker at Cambridge. Later, Pierie who isolated similar bacillus from liver of gerbils in 1927 named it Listerella hepatolytica in honour of surgeon Joseph Lister and finally renamed it Listeria in 1940 due to taxonomic reasons.

Etiology: The disease is caused by L. monocytogenes. The genus Listeria consists of a group of Gm + bacteria of low G+C content closely related to Bacillus, Clostridium, Enterococcus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Out of 6 species reported, only L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii are considered virulent. Human cases of L. ivanovii infection are rare whereas L. monocytogenes is an important food borne pathogen. L. monocytogenes has been isolated from a variety of food products. Meat, poultry, dairy and vegetable products have been implicated as vehicles of listeriosis. The organism can be isolated from faeces and silage. The organism can be easily destroyed by ordinary disinfectants but may survive in soil and silage for a considerable period of time.

L. monocytogenes is small, coccoid with a tendency to occur in chains. It is aerobic or microaerophilic. It grows on ordinary media within a temperature range of 4-42°C. Growth is improved by addition of glucose, blood or liver extract. Colonies are β haemolytic on blood agar. It ferments glucose and salicin producing acid without gas. Lactose, maltose and sucrose are fermented slowly or not at all and mannitol is not fermented. It is catalase +. It shows tumbling motility when grown at 25°C but at 37°C is non-motile. It is because peritrichous flagella are produced by the bacillus optimally at 20-30°C but scantily or not at all at 37°C.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a popular subtropical evergreen fruit tree. The Litchi (lychee) is the most renowned of a group of edible fruits of the soap berry family, Sapindaceae. It is botanically designated Litchi chinensis Sonn. (Nephelium litchi Cambess) and widely known as litchi and regionally as lichi, lichee, laichi, leechee or lychee. Litchi is a tropical fruit tree native to southern China. It is also commonly found in Madagascar, India (Muzaffarpur), Bangladesh, Pakistan, southern Taiwan, northern Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Southern Africa. Great source of Vitamin C and potassium, it also contains phosphorous, calcium, magnesium and protein. The fruit is liked by everybody because of its excellent quality, attractive red colour and characteristics pleasant flavor.

In the recent years it has been increasingly realized that only increase in physical production of crops no longer guarantees the smooth development of agriculture at both the farm and the national economy levels unless and until it is linked with efficient system of marketing. As such, now a day in planning for agricultural development specially in developing economies marketing system had drawn much more attention than customarily assigned to it. Efficient marketing of agricultural commodities in general and fruits crops in particular plays an important role in safeguarding the interest of producer as well as consumer.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) a native of China, is grown in India since 18th century. It is member of the genus Litchi in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. The name of the fruit is derived from the Chinese word lee chee which means “one who gives the pleasures of life”. Litchi is also known as the “fruit of romance” in China. The most important use of litchi is as table fruit in ripe form although it is also used in processed forms such as squash. The fresh fruit has a “delicate, whitish pulp” with a “perfume” flavour. Eating litchi can benefit those suffering from colds, fever and sore throats. Great source of Vitamin C and potassium, it also contains phosphorous, calcium, magnesium and protein. According to a Chinese book, the nature of the flesh of the litchi is warm and it can helps improveing the blood circulation. The Chinese also use litchi for medicinal purposes and for making wine.

Of the four species, C.illepida is more damaging to litchi fruits. The larvae bore into developing fruits and seeds, filling the bore-holes with excreta and the infested fruits start rotting.

A Chinese renowned statesman Chang Chow-ling of the eighth century in a poem on litchi indicated it as the most luscious of all fruits, and in quality surpasses the other two southern China’s famous fruits i.e. orange and peach. Litchi cultivation has been restricted to few selected sites mainly for its somewhat exacting in its climatic and cultural requirements. In recent times as litchi has established in the tropical America, there appears no doubt that very soon the fruits shall be in abundance in different parts of the tropics and subtropics. The most limiting factor in early dissemination of litchi was the perishable nature of seed and prior to steam navigation it was very difficult to transport the seeds from one continent to another successfully.

Origin and history- Litchi is a popular subtropical evergreen fruit; the white translucent flavoured aril is liked very much and is used for table purpose in India. The fruits are available during May–June in northern India. China is the biggest producer of litchi followed by India. In India major litchi producing areas are Mujaffarpur, Bihar mountain area of Saharanpur, Dehradoon, Hoshiyarpur and Gurdaspur district of Punjab.

Soil and climate - It can be grown sandy to clay loam and it prefer slightly acidic soil having pH range from 6-6.5 it has been reported that in acidic soil litchi root develop Micorrhyza. Which symbiosis of root fungus and there by Nitrogen fixation take place in atmosphere.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), a member of the Sapindaceae family, originated in China. An arillate fruit, it is widely cultivated in subtropical regions of the world, providing livelihood security to millions of people in south-east Asia (GalanSauco and Menini, 1989; Menzel and Waite, 2005). Litchi is important commercial fruit crop in India. It is popularly known as “queen” of fruits due to its attractive colour, taste, flavour and excellent quality. Nutritionally, it is rich in sugar content with appreciable content of protein, minerals, fibres, vitamins and calorific value. Litchi is consumed mainly as fresh and little as processed form. The juicy aril is an excellent thirst quencher. It is highly perishable in nature. The short span of fruit availability coupled with poor shelf-life, limits duration of its availability in the domestic as well as international market. Till date, it is meagrely exploited for potential production and due R & D support is still lacking.

PRESENT STATUS

At present annual fruit production is around 585,300 metric tonnes from an area of 84,170 ha and the national productivity is 6.95 tonnes/ha. In India, main production region is concentrated in Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Jharkhand, Tripura, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The area under this crop has undergone substantial expansion in the past 64 years with plantation increasing from 9,400 ha in 1949 to 78,000 ha, in 2013 (NHB, 2013). Till date, the present level of production is unable to cope up with the ever-increasing demand. Its fruits are available from early-May to July in different areas.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a subtropical and evergreen tree belonging to the family Sapindaceae. This fruit has highly specific climatic adaptability due to chilling requirement for floral initiation on one hand and the damage caused due to high summer temperature along with low relative humidity during fruit growth period on the other hand. Some other factors influencing expansion in different regions of the world are difficulties in establishment of plants in nursery and orchards, bearing and further into harvesting and post-harvest management. Calcium rich soil with mycorrhizae is best suited for the luxuriant growth of litchi plants which are commercially propagated by air-layering or gootee.

There has been a substantial increase in the area and production of litchi in India during the past 50 years. The area has increased from 9400 ha (1949–1950) to 91,000 ha (2016–2017). The contribution of litchi to the total area under fruit cultivation has increased from 0.75% to 1.70%. Increase in area during 1991–1992 to 2016–2017 (22 years) has been more than 80%, whereas production increase during the same period is to the tune of more than 150% (NHB, 2016–17). Productivity also recorded an increase of about 50% during the same period. Evidently, production and productivity of litchi are constantly increasing in the country. On a global scale, the fresh fruit market dominates the trade, followed by dried and canned fruit. Low success rate of establishment, lesser fruiting span, low and irregular yields because of poor flowering and fruit set, fruit cracking, browning and rotting of fruits, fruit borers and mites, poor shelf life, and lack of suitable varieties with early and late maturity and good-quality fruits are some of the factors encountered

• Air layering is called “Marcottage” in China and “Gootee” in India.
• IBA (2-10g/liter of water) is most effective in root promotion in air layering of litchi.
• Flowers are petalless.
