INTRODUCTION

Information literacy has been the subject of many studies over many years. The originating concept of information literacy is generally attributed to Paul Zurkowski, in 1974 (Spitzer, Eisenberg & Lowe 1998). Indeed, since 1974 information literacy has been an area of increasing interest to librarians and information professionals and there is a huge amount of literature on the topic. However, the majority of publications have come from the industrialised, English-speaking countries, especially from the United States and Australia. Information literacy is related to information technology skills, but has broader implications for the individual, the educational system, and for society. Information literacy is a natural extension of the concept of literacy in our information society. Information literacy education is the catalyst required to transform the information society of today into the learning society of tomorrow. IL is generally seen as pivotal to the pursuit of lifelong learning, and central to achieving both personal empowerment and economic development. Information literacy is a key component of, and contributor to, lifelong learning. Information literacy is increasingly important in the contemporary environment of rapid technological changes and proliferating information resources. Because of the escalating complexity of this environment, individuals are faced with diverse and abundant information choices—in their studies, in the workplace, and in their personal lives. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self directed, and assume greater control over their own learning.

The phrase “information skills” (rather than information literacy) is used, for example, by the Standing Conference of National and University Libraries (SCONUL) in the name of its Task Force, and was used by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) when tendering for a project looking at training in UK further and higher education.

Information literacy competency ensures maximum utilization of the information resources as well as optimization of information handling capabilities.. Information literacy competency extends learning beyond formal classroom settings and provides practice with self-directed investigations as individuals move into internships, first professional positions, and increasing responsibilities in all arenas of life. Introduction 
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as a transformative force in agriculture, significantly enhancing access to information, improving productivity, and promoting sustainable practices. The integration of ICT tools facilitates the dissemination of critical agricultural knowledge, enabling farmers to make informed decisions regarding planting, pest control, and market trends. This technological advancement is particularly beneficial for small-scale farmers who often face challenges in accessing timely and relevant information. ICT platforms such as mobile phones and radios play a crucial role in providing small-scale farmers with access to essential agricultural input information, aiding them in making informed decisions (Fosu & Giba-Fosu, 2024). Furthermore, ICT tools, including e-learning platforms and mobile applications, have revolutionized agricultural extension services by providing direct access to advisory services and expert knowledge. The use of social media and mobile communication has also improved interactions between farmers and agricultural experts, thereby increasing the effectiveness of extension programs (Bhat et al., 2024). The advent of digital and smart agriculture, supported by ICT, incorporates technologies such as remote sensing, precision agriculture, and automated machinery to optimize farming practices and reduce labor dependency (Yoe, 2024). Agri-informatics, a specialized branch of ICT in agriculture, leverages emerging technologies like Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT) to develop sophisticated agricultural systems, promoting smart farming practices (Jena, 2024). While ICT provides numerous advantages, challenges such as infrastructural limitations, economic constraints, and disparities in digital literacy hinder its widespread adoption. Addressing these barriers through policy interventions and capacity-building initiatives is crucial for maximizing the potential of ICT in agriculture. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into agriculture to address contemporary challenges such as climate change, population growth, and the demand for sustainable food production. AI applications in soil and crop monitoring, predictive analytics, and agricultural robotics are gaining attraction, assisting farmers in data collection and analysis (Smith, 2020; Gupta et al., 2023). Moreover, automation in agriculture, driven by AI, addresses issues such as crop diseases, irrigation management, and pest control. Techniques like IoT, machine learning, and deep learning contribute to the automation of farming practices, increasing soil fertility and productivity (Jha et al., 2019). Robotics and automated systems minimize human intervention, thereby enhancing farm efficiency and sustainability (Eli-Chukwu, 2019). Abstract

The pressure due to increase in world population necessitates an increase in agricultural production and this warrants the vital importance of research in plant and soil productivity. Applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have resulted in soil pollution, desertification and salinisation which disrupted the agriculture production. A suitable microbial technology to improve the soil health and plant productivity has been invented. Increase in the use of bacterial fertilizers substantially reduced the use of chemical fertilizers. Similarly invention of specific antagonistic microbes which control pathogen and stimulate plant growth resulted in lesser use of agrochemicals. Selection, development and application of such microbial strains to the agronomic crops resulted improving the fertility of such affected soil. The studies on plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on the growth and nutrient uptake of various plants have been well studied. Presently, it has been found that the use of beneficial microbes can enhance the resistance ability to adverse stresses. Some mechanisms by which the beneficial microorganisms are able to stimulate plant growth and arrest plant pathogens include mobilization of nutrients, production of phytohormones, siderophores, organic acids, nitrogen fixation, lowering of ethylene levels in plants and antagonism. Here the recent developments that have been taken place on the interaction between plants and PGPR and their mechanism of action resulting in enhanced agriculture production and soil fertility are discussed.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the major cereal consumed globally in various form as food. The powder of wheat flour is prepared by grinding of wheat seeds. Soft wheat flour has low gluten content that causes its crumbly texture. However, hard wheat flour has high gluten content of about 12-14% and has elastic toughness due to which it has good shape once its baked. Wheat flour is a basic ingredient in India’s famous flatbreads, and it can also be a key ingredient in addressing major health concerns in India.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) refer to the legal rights granted to creators, inventors, and innovators for their intellectual creations. These rights enable individuals or organizations to control and benefit from the use of their creations for a certain period. In the era of rapid advancements in biotechnology and molecular biology, IPR has emerged as a cornerstone in protecting and commercializing innovations in plant genetics, genetic engineering, bioproducts, and molecular tools.
The concept of IPR is rooted in the recognition that ideas, like physical property, hold economic value and deserve legal protection. IPR plays a pivotal role in encouraging innovation, fostering technology transfer, promoting research investment, and ensuring economic returns to developers. In biotechnology, IPR has direct implications on transgenic technologies, bioinformatics, novel genes, enzymes, diagnostic kits, and biopharmaceuticals.
1.1 Evolution and Historical Background of IPR

The concept of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) has evolved over centuries as a legal framework to protect creations of the human intellect. While the terminology “intellectual property” is relatively modern, the underlying idea—that inventors, artists, and creators deserve recognition and protection for their innovations—has ancient roots. In the context of modern biotechnology, IPR serves not only as a legal safeguard but also as a vital tool to stimulate innovation, secure investments, and promote equitable commercialization.
Understanding the historical trajectory of IPR helps contextualize contemporary debates on the ownership of genetic resources, traditional knowledge, and the ethical implications of patenting life forms.

The effective application of agricultural meteorology in supporting agricultural decision-making and productivity relies heavily on the skills and knowledge of the individuals involved. As the agricultural sector continues to face growing challenges from climate variability, weather extremes, and changing environmental conditions, the need for well-trained and informed professionals has never been more pressing. Skill Advancement and Knowledge Empowerment (SAKE) is crucial for ensuring that stakeholders, including farmers, agricultural advisors, policymakers, and meteorological service providers, have the necessary expertise to harness the benefits of agricultural meteorology (Fig. 13.1). This chapter focuses on the education, training, and capacity-building initiatives required to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals working in operational agricultural meteorology. It explores the various levels of education and training needed, from basic awareness and understanding of meteorological concepts to advanced technical skills and specialized knowledge in areas such as agrometeorological modeling, data analysis, and decision-support systems. The chapter begins by discussing the importance of SAKE in the context of agricultural meteorology, highlighting the key challenges and opportunities in this field. Our biological heritage, from genes to ecosystems, is threatened on a global scale. Biological species, the prime focus on biodiversity, provide all our basic requirements such as food, medicine, fuel and things for well being, make nature’s sustainability through purifying air and water, pollinating crops, etc. and motivate us at a deep emotional level. During the course of human civilization and consequent urbanization process biological species and environment have been degraded. It is estimated that about 20% of all species are expected to be lost within 30 years and 50% or more by the end of the 21^st century [36]. The current rates of species extinction are 1000–10,000 times higher than the background rate of 10-7 species per year inferred from fossil record. Today, we seem to be losing two to five species per hour from tropical forests alone. This amounts to a loss of 16 m population per year or 1800 populations per hour. This led to biodiversity crisis in the global level [23,26,35] and generated an outpouring of research on biodiversity for the last 25 years. As a result we could have a general understanding about the distribution of biodiversity, the proximate causes (habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, habitat degradation, invasive species, pollution, resource exploitation) contributing to its loss, sketches of the root causes of biodiversity loss, and the outlines of better management policies. Since the establishment of the convention on biological diversity in 1992, conservation of biodiversity has become a priority concern on the international agenda.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Infestation by insect pests is a major factor responsible for the low productivity of spice crops in India. Spice crops such as black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton), ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) are infested by many species of insect pests, some of which cause severe crop losses. Adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) schedules in which biological control forms a major component is more relevant in these crops since excessive use of insecticides could lead to pesticide residues in the produce and other ecological hazards. Spices are high-value and export-oriented in nature and pesticide residues are the most important non-tariff barriers on trade in these produces. There has been a renewed interest during the past decade in developing environment–friendly crop management schedules in sustainable agriculture including spice crops, reflecting the increasing concern over pesticide misuse.

Abstract

Plant-associated microorganisms play a significant role in conferring resistance to abiotic stresses. These organisms include rhizoplane and endophytic bacteria and symbiotic fungi and operate through a variety of mechanisms like triggering osmotic response and induction of novel genes in plants. The development of stress tolerant crop varieties through genetic engineering and plant breeding is essential but a long and strained process, whereas microbial inoculation to alleviate stresses in plants could be a more cost effective environmental friendly option which could be available in a shorter time frame. Considering the current trends available, intensive future research is needed in this area, particularly on field evaluation and application of potential organisms.

An aquifer is a geologic formation, a part of a formation, or a group of formations that will yield water. The quantity of ground water that an aquifer will yield to wells depends partly on its thickness, extent, continuity, and homogeneity, and partly on its physical properties of permeability and porosity.

Groundwater is stored in subsurface void spaces below the water table. The geologic material that stores, transmits, and yields groundwater to wells and springs are called aquifers. The key word here is yields. To be an aquifer, it must store and transmit water at rates fast enough to supply reasonable amounts to wells and springs. Therefore, not all groundwater is stored in an aquifer. Productive aquifers can be comprised of sand and gravel, sandstone, limestone and dolomite, or basalt flows, whereas fractured igneous or metamorphic rocks are only marginal aquifers.

Plant breeding is essentially a technology. Any technology will stand the test of time if it is based on sound concepts. In the case of plant breeding, the concepts are provided by the science of genetics.

Plant productivity in its broad sense requires consideration of not only yield but also of a number of its direct and indirect components. For example in groundnut, besides pod yield, shelling percentage, 100-kernel weight and oil content are components relevant to defining productivity. A number of physiological (like biomass, leaf area, specific leaf weight), morphological (like days to flowering, number of branches, number of mature seeds), nitrogen-fixing, (where relevant, for example, number of nodules, nodule mass, nitrogenase activity) and such other characters influence yield directly or indirectly.

Yield and most yield contributing characters are quantitative in nature. A quantitative character is one which shows continuous variation. In contrast, qualitative characters like flower colour and seed coat colour show, in general, discrete variation and are controlled by fewer genes with major effects. A quantitative trait, however, is governed by many genes. The range of values of a quantitative character is described by a continuous distribution, usually assumed to be a normal distribution. The distribution is specified by the two parameters: mean and variance.

There has been consistent narrowing down of gap in our knowledge about various ‘omics’ as the omics’ based disciplines are filled with valuable information emerging from research. During the last two decades, the practice of genetics has not only changed the broad horizons of medicine but also found its niche through “high-dimensional biology” there by allowing geneticists to reframe the good-old definition of gene from a locatable region of genome sequence involved in heritability to a locatable region of genome sequence associated with a functional region or a functor. Various other scientists viewed genetics ‘‘as the study of single genes and their effects’’ and genomics as ‘‘the study not just of single genes, but of the functions and interactions of all the genes in the genome.’’ We will cover the qualitative difference that bridges various disciplines casing Omics.

INTRODUCTION

Himalayan region is known for the diversity of its cultural heritage and climate. In Indian part, this mountain range includes states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The climatic variability of the region,from sub-tropical to extreme dry temperate, offers great attraction to naturalists, all across the globe. The forest formations here are the natural habitats of a large number of flora and fauna. The flora found in these forests varies with the altitudinal gradient and is quite distinct. In the sub-tropical Himalayas, for example,the predominant vegetation is of deciduous type consisting of trees, shrubs, scrubs, climbers and xerophytes. Man-made Chir pine forests can also be witnessed. At middle elevation, the climate is sub-temperate and supports a mix of broad leaves and pines forests.In the high reaches including Trans Himalayas, climate is typically wet or dry temperate. In the wet temperate climate, evergreen forests are the predominant vegetation, whereas, the dry temperate areas do not support any significant vegetation.This variation in climate and altitude has a great impact on the biodiversity found in the region, and represents about seven percent of the country’s total biodiversity.

Among this diversity, many valuable and rare medicinal and aromatic plants grow wild in the region. The herbs which are traded from this region are of immense value for the preparation of Ayurvedic drugs in the form of monoherbal preparations or as multi-compound herbal formulations. Charak Samhita mentions that the herbs of the Himalayan forests excel in efficacy.

Abstract

Protected cultivation of horticultural crops especially vegetables provides the best way to increase the productivity and quality of vegetables especially during off-season, which also fetches better market price. Yield of some of the vegetables like tomato, capsicum and cucurbits can be increased manifold compared to their open field cultivation. Irrigation management is an important aspect of protected cultivation technology for improving the input use efficiency such as water and nutrients for the cultivation of crops under protected environment such as polyhouse, net house, poly tunnels and nursery production. Various other techniques such as use of mulch can be used to further enhance the water and nutrient use efficiency along with improving the quality of produce and precise resource savings. Automation further reduces the manual intervention and increases the input use efficiency.

Understanding the chemistry of submerged soil in the field of Geology, Pedology, Agriculture and other allied sectors draws attention to the research on characteristic changes in soil under submergence. It has been reported that, about 72% of the earth’s surface is covered by submerged soils or sediments . Rice plants have unique adaptation capability to grow under submerged soil and in any type of soil (acid/alkaline) condition or land situation (upland/lowland). The knowledge on changes of important physical, chemical and biological properties under submergence have important role to play in understanding the mechanisms of availability of nutrients to the plants and sustainability of the crop during its growing period.

The soils which are saturated with water for a longer period of time in a year to make the soil a distinctive gley horizons resulting from oxidation-reduction processes are called submerged soil. About 72% of the earth’s surface is covered with soil –submergence or sediments.

Abstract

Current trend of global agricultural systems entails preference towards sustainable crop production through organic agriculture (ecology based) as compared to conventional (synthetic input based). In order to claim as organic, it needs to be certified as per requirements organic standard. The soil fertility management organic standard requirements of major countries are outlined. This review article compares the agricultural management practices of organic and conventional systems so as to assess its impacts on microbial biodiversity, microbial activities on soil functioning and long term fertility based on long term field studies conducted in different parts of the globe.

Abstract

Microorganisms execute many key functions that regulate the processes related to the fertility status, nutrient transformation, nutrient conservation, and soil health management that are crucial for agronomic sustainability. Rice soils offer peculiar conditions for microorganisms that support diametrically opposite biochemical reactions under flooded conditions. It is pertinent to note that both reduction and oxidation reactions of several essential nutrients mediated by microbes occur simultaneously in the flooded soils at various depths, profiles and stages of rice crop growth in concurrence. This is peculiar and specific to rice soils as the cultivation process demands changes in water regimes, operative and management practices.

2.1 Introduction

Energy is one of the main input for rural development and economic development. The greater part of the world population lives at low standard and a quarter of the population or about 1.5 billion, have an extremely low standard of life. Energy is one of the essential requirement of the quality of life the people. The industrial development or even large scale food production, water supply, textile manufactures & construction of building and other recreation items are not possible without adequate supply of energy. Therefore, one of the most important tasks is to provide adequate, reliable, convenient and efficient supply of energy, if quality of life of the people is to be raised from its present level of grinding poverty. Table 2.1 project the global primary energy supply in six scenarios i.e A1 - its strong emphasis on oil and natural gas use. A2 - which is coal-intensive. A3 - which emphasises the roles of natural gas, new renewables and nuclear in averting serious problems from emissions. B - Middle course. C1- with its emphasis on energy efficiency improvements, new renewables (especially solar in the longer run), but with nuclear power phased out by 2100 because unable to satisfy its critics and C2 - where nuclear power plays an expanding role.
