Rivers are the most important system for water, for irrigation and human settlement. Historically, civilizations always nucleated near rivers, and latter also had social and religious significance. Rivers in India are considered holy and play the most important part in the lives of people, fauna & flora and the future environmental system.

The Ganga Basin is the largest river basin in India which includes the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Ghagra, the Gandak, the Kaveri basin etc. Compared to these, the Vishwamitri River, situated between Mahi River in North and Narmada River in South in Central Gujarat is a small seasonal river but it is very important for the city of Vadodara and Central Gujarat region. This seasonal river originates from Pavagadh hills and flows east to west. It is a typical small river with the kind of problems in most rivers in India and other countries – liquid and solid wastes, enouncements, blocking of water ways, floods in monsoon months and dry dumping basin during most other months etc.

RIVERS & THEIR REVIVAL
River basin planning and watershed management were the centerpieces of water resource planning at the dawn of the era. For most of the century, however, natural resource policies and pressures led to watershed degradation. Today, the resources value of watershed ecosystems are being rediscovered. Watershed management reflects the recognition that we can only sustain biodiversity by managing the future ecosystem.

We visited The Model Sea Farm Project under the Royal Initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on 10/10/2023 at 1 pm It is a government farm located at Phetchaburi Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about seaweed production and zero waste aquaculture system.

1) Sea ranching

Species used for sea ranching was Banana shrimp (Fenneropenaeus merguiensis). 2 months old shrimps were collected from tank and used for ranching

Assumptions

    ·    Freshly calved animals in 1st or 2nd lactation are purchased in two batches of five animals each at an interval of 5 to 6 months.

    ·    Cost of rearing calves not considered as it will be nullified by their sale value or retention value.

    ·    Fodder cultivation considered in two acres and working capital for one crop / season considered. Two crops considered per year.
 
    ·    Manure is utilized for fodder cultivation.

Modeling phytonematodes is helpful in the investigation of several host plant interactions and may yield useful information to be exploited in the integration of management strategies and biological control. Modeling the phytonematodes density changes in a soil/root microcosm may allow the identification of main factors active in such systems (Ciancio et?al?, 2022). The multiple tri-trophic interactions linking roots, phytonematodes and antagonists, however, originate a very complex system. It requires knowledge about the many parameters describing the nematode life stages, the interactions with the antagonistic organisms present in the microcosm, as well as their capabilities for effective and durable host regulation. Descriptive variables should also account for the effects of roots and of other environmental factors at work in the tri-trophic interaction system. Models may provide benefits, including the possibility of identifying the best moment for the inoculation of a biocontrol agent, the optimal amount of its inoculum applied to maximize its biocontrol efficacy, as well as the possibility to simulate and thus investigate its behavior once introduced in soil.

Abstract

The increasing interest in polyphenolic compounds in industries has led to the exploration and exploitation of rich bio-compounds from natural sources, essentially plants and their by-products. Solid-liquid extraction is mostly applied for the recovery of these valuable compounds from plants. Since the extraction process is often difficult in a fresh matrix, a drying operation is needed to reduce the moisture content, and preserve the targeted valuable compounds. An uncontrolled drying operation will lead to product damage and hence, loss in quality, reason why, several studies have been carried out to understand and control the drying process. The present chapter aims to present some data on drying for bioactive compound recovery from plants and their by-products, mainly polyphenolic compounds. Our main interest is the mathematical tools used to model the drying process.

Abstract

There are several empirical models to describe deep bed drying dividing the domain into many thin layers. Empirical equations are seen as a resource that only serves to describe the thin layer drying kinetics of an agricultural product. Normally an empirical model is used to determine drying rate. The validity of following thin-layer drying models are accounted by coefficient of correlation (R2), standard error of estimated (SEE), root mean square error (RMSE). The properties of dried foods vary substantially depending upon the type of product, moisture content, drying type and ultimately drying conditions. To take care all above variables, a promising approach is to use Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In process control, the main objectives are food safety, high quality and yield at minimal costs. To obtain high quality products, on-line control techniques are required. Most food processes are highly nonlinear, with time varying dynamics, which complicates food automation. However, the recent developments in artificial intelligence based advanced control tools such as ANN to food processing have opened up novel possibilities for processing industries.

The UNFCCC (United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change) has defined climate change as “a change in climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of global atmosphere which is in addition to natural climate variability” (UNFCCC, 2008). Ruminant animals, such as cattle, sheep, buffalo, and goats, are unique due to their special digestive systems which can convert otherwise unusable plant materials into nutritious food and fiber. This same helpful digestive system, however, produces methane (CH₄), a potent green house gas (GHG) that can contribute to global climate change. Livestock production systems can also emit other greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide (N₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The most important GHG?s are CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O, which have increased in the last 150 years and have different global warming potential. According to Sejian et al., (2011) and Solomon et al., (2007), the warming potential of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O are 1, 25, and 310, respectively. Taking into account the entire livestock commodity chain – from land use and feed production, to livestock farming and waste management, to product processing and transportation –Livestock?s Long Shadow attributes about 18 percent of total anthropogenic GHG emissions to the livestock sector (FAO, 2006). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), convened by the United Nations, has reported evidence that human activities over the past 50 years have influenced Global Climate through the production of GHG, which results in increased absorption in the atmosphere of infrared radiations emitted from the earth?s surface. The accumulation of GHG results in increased global temperature which in turn can increase annual precipitation in high rainfall regions and decrease precipitation in regions of low rainfall (Gerstengarbe and Werner, 2008). This will affect water supplies, distribution of deserts and wet areas, the range and number of pests that affect plants or diseases and biodiversity.

Abstract

Prediction of the occurrences of Landslides requires a set of complex analyses, involving multitude of factors which are to be studied systematically in order to evaluate the landslide vulnerability. The increasing availability of computer-based tools and data storage capabilities are found to be useful in landslide vulnerability mapping. One such significant tool in landslide studies is Geographic Information System (GIS). In this article some approaches were made to model the land slide hazard for Sirumalai Hills, Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu, India using Geographical Information Systems and the same is presented in this paper.

Introduction

Climate variability can have significant impacts on agricultural production, affecting both the demand and supply sides of farming. As climate change continues to negatively impact our ecosystem, food production, and human livelihood, this topic has gained widespread attention from researchers and academics worldwide. Given that agriculture is highly dependent on factors such as precipitation and temperature, it is considered one of the most climate sensitive sectors (Sagar et al., 2022).

Climatic data is complex and nonlinear, with significant fluctuation across time components, resulting in greater volatility. This means that stochastic climatic variables, including rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, and other weather parameters, often exhibit conditional heteroscedasticity, leading to irregular residual mean and variance across time series.

4.1 Introduction

The developed or commercially available models can be applied for any water bodies such as fresh water lakes, ponds, rivers, estuaries and marine ecosystems. The predicted results can be compared with proved with field data and existing approved models and applies to the other such ecosystems. In this chapter, we can discuss about modeling of water bodies, water quality model, spatial discretizafion, modeling pollutants and toxicants, concentration modeling, hydrodynamic mixing zone analysis.

4.2 Modeling of Water bodies

The need for predictive water quality modeling has arisen largely as a result of increased eutrophication of lakes throughout the world (Forsberg, 1987; Canfield and Hoyer, 1988). The most common modelling approach is exemplified by the development and application of steady state, input-output models. Generally, nutrient concentrations are calculated from net inputs and chlorophyll a concentration is predicted by correlation with the limiting nutrient, most often phosphorus (Dillon and Rigler, 1975; Canfield and Bachmann, 1981; OECD, 1982).

Factors that can also influence phytoplankton biomass, such as light, climate, biological interactions and internal loading of nutrients, are not considered. Further more, the assumption that a lake is a continuously mixed system is very restrictive and only applicable at discrete times of the year. As a result, the shortcomings of such approaches include an inability to make predictions in the face of varying physical and biological conditions, and a failure to offer insights into the determinants of changing water quality.

7.1 Introduction

The coast is one of the most important boundaries in the world. It separates the marine part of the world from the continents. It separates the salt-water communities from fresh water communities; it separates land life from water borne life but amphibians living both environments (Fig. 7.1).

Some of the marine organisms move towards estuary for reproduction with less water salinity. The coastline as such is not a stable. It fluctuates in place over considerable distances due to erosion and sedimentation, but also due to the relative change of sea level with respect to land. The coastal zone is thus a very mobile part of the earth from a geographical point of view. Due to its specific geophysical properties, the coast is also a very important area for the development of flora and fauna. There is hardly any other part of the world that houses such a variety of species, both in flora and fauna.

The abundance of opportunities along the coast has also attracted a lot of human activities. The coastal zone has become an indispensable resource for mankind. It provides excellent opportunities for fisheries, housing, recreation, transport, defense purpose, industrial activities and many others. The influx of man with their social and economic activities, their needs for safe housing, food, drinking water, and with the tremendous quantities of waste they are producing poses at the same time a serious threat to the unique features of the coastal zone. It is therefore necessary to study this valuable region so as to prevent that competing activities are gradually causing depletion of the resources in the coastline. The following figures (Fig. 7.1and 7.2) show the typical coastal area of rocky coast and sandy coast.

8.1 Introduction

A lake is a body of water or other liquid of considerable size surrounded entirely by land (Fig. 8.1). A vast majority of lakes on Earth are fresh water, and most lie in the Northern Hemisphere at higher latitudes. In ecology, the environment of a lake is referred to as lacustrine.

Large lakes are occasionally referred to as “inland seas” and small seas are occasionally referred to as lakes. Smaller lakes tend to put the word “lake” after the name, as in Green Lake, while larger lakes often invert the word order, as in Lake Ontario, at least in North America. The term lake is also used to describe a feature such as Lake Dal, which is a wet basin most of the time but may become filled under seasonal conditions of heavy rainfall and snowfall. Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for hydro electric power supply, recreational purposes, industrial use, agricultural use, or domestic water supply.

10.1 Introduction

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a chemical procedure for determining how fast biological organisms use up oxygen in a body of water. It is usually performed over a 5 day period at 20 C. It is used in water quality management and assessment, ecology and environmental science. BOD is not an accurate quantitative test, although it could be considered as an indication of the quality of a water source.

10.2 Typical BOD values

Most pristine rivers will have a 5-day BOD of less than 1 mg/l. Moderately polluted rivers may have a BOD value in the range of 2 to 8 mg/l. Municipal sewage that is efficiently treated by a three stage process would have a value of about 20 mg/l. Untreated sewage varies, but averages around 600 mg/l in India and as low as 200 mg/l in the U.S., or where there is severe groundwater or surface water infiltration. Slurry from dairy farms is around 8000 mg/l and silage liquor around 60000 mg/l.

5.1 Introduction

The water quality modeling methodologies are started from conceptual models such as defining the problem in a particular region of interest like fresh water ecosystem, coastal ecosystems, ocean ecosystems, the following methodology can be studied carefully for water quality modeling.

Identification of problems in the region of interest

Monitoring of field data using standard methods like APHA, USGS, BIS etc.

Evaluation of primary data for the toxins, higher amount of concentration from the ambient conditions

Processing of primary data to secondary data

Based on the primary data and secondary data, suitable modeling software can be used. If the temperature of the region is higher than the ambient, it should be used Qual2E, MIKE21 etc.

Modeling results can be compared with field data for calibration and validation.

9.1. Introduction

Oceans (from Okeanos in Greek) are saline waters that cover almost three quarters (71%) of the surface of the Earth. The area of the oceans is 361 million sq. km., and nearly half of the world’s marine waters are over 3,000 meters deep.

Though somewhat arbitrarily divided into several “separate” oceans, these oceans are in fact one global, interconnected body of salt water, often called the World Ocean. The major divisions are defined in part by the continents and a variety of archipelagos, and are labeled the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. Smaller regions of the oceans are called seas, gulfs and straits.

There are a some smaller bodies of salt water that are not interconnected with the World Ocean. These are not considered to be oceans or parts of oceans, though some of them have been given the name, sea.

Geologically, an ocean is an area of oceanic crust covered by water. Oceanic crust is the thin layer of solidified volcanic basalt that covers the Earth’s mantle where there are no continents. From this point of view, there are three “oceans” today: the World Ocean, and the Black and Caspian Seas that were formed by the collision of Cimmeria with Laurasia. The Mediterranean Sea is very nearly its own “ocean”, being connected to the World Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar, and indeed several times over the last few million years movement of the African Continent has closed the strait off entirely, making the Mediterranean a fourth “ocean”.

3.1 Introduction

By the end of the twentieth century one of our most important scientific accomplishments has been the explicit realization that the human population is changing the earth system. Some of these changes are occurring at a remarkable rate. We know, with certainty, that human activities are changing land use, habitats, the chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere and water, rates and balance of biogeochemical processes, and diversity of life on the planet (Vitousek et al. 1997). One prominent mode of human disturbance has resulted from activities that mobilize the nutrient elements nitrogen and phosphorus through land clearing, production and applications of fertilizer, discharge of human waste, animal production, and combustion of fossil fuels (Nixon 1995).

As a result of these activities, surface waters and ground waters throughout the world now have elevated concentrations of N and P compared to concentrations even in the middle of the 20th century. Our mobilization of N and P has accelerated the fluxes of these elements to coastal waters, and fertilization of coastal ecosystems is now a serious environmental problem because it stimulates plant growth and disrupts the balance between the production and metabolism of organic matter in the coastal zone. Coastal eutrophication is a recently recognized phenomenon (Nixon 1995), and scientific investigation of this human disturbance has progressed for only a few decades, so our conceptual model of the problem is evolving rapidly. Here, I describe 2 phases in the evolution of our conceptual model of how nutrient enrichment disrupts coastal ecosystems, and then finish with a view to the future, suggesting critical questions that must be answered as we work to advance and broaden our understanding of this complex environmental problem. This examination of conceptual models is designed as a complement to the excellent general reviews of coastal eutrophication (Vollenweider 1992, Heip 1995, Nixon 1995, Jørgensen & Richardson 1996, National Research Council 2000).

6.1. Introduction

A river is a large natural waterway. The source of a river may be a lake, a spring, or a collection of small streams, known as headwaters. From their source, all rivers flow downhill, typically terminating in the ocean. The mouth, or lower end, of a river is known as its base level.

A river water is confined to a channel, made up of a stream bed between banks. Most rainfall on land passes through a river on its way to the ocean. Smaller side streams that join a river are tributaries. The scientific term for any flowing natural waterway is a stream; so in technical language, the term river is just a shorthand way to refer to a large stream. Rivers throughout history have been the source and support for civilization, and many major cities today are near a river of some sort (Fig. 6.1).

6.1.1 Topography

A river conducts water by constantly flowing from a higher to a lower elevation, thereby converting the potential energy of the water into kinetic energy. It starts to form loops and snakes through the plain by eroding the river banks. Sometimes the river will cut off a loop, shortening the channel and forming an oxbow lake from the cut off section. Rivers that carry large amounts of sediment may develop conspicuous deltas at their mouths, if conditions permit. Rivers, whose mouths are in saline tidal waters, may form estuaries. River mouths may also be rias.

7.1 Introduction

Energy has become a critical input for the economic development of the India because of the wide spread scarcity of oil and electricity and other commercial form of energy.

The rural areas are often the worst affected because of these shortages and the rural population continues to depend on the inefficient non-commercial energy from like fire wood, cow dung, human and animal for meeting their energy requirement for subsistence, production and devolvement needs.

The rural energy crises or “The energy crisis” has been getting increased attention from the policy makers to tackle the problem in a planned and integrated manner.

The rural energy sector is concerned with two major planning issues.

1. Provision of energy for meeting substance needs for cooking, heating and lighting of the rural areas of the country. This problem is also directly linked to the problem of deforestation and environmental destruction being caused in the rural area because of indiscriminate and wide spread use of non conventional energy sources.
2. Meeting energy requirements for production activities which would create employment and productivity in rural areas.

1. Introduction
Water is the most crucial input for agricultural production. Globally, more than 80% of all freshwater used by humans are consumed in agriculture and most of it are for crop production (Morison et al., 2008). Currently about 60% of production in developing countries is derived from rainfall. Though irrigation provides only 10% of agricultural water use and covers just around 20% of the cropland, it can contribute about 40% of total food production since productivity of irrigated land is almost three times higher than that of rainfed land. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has predicted a net expansion of irrigated land of about 45 million is hectares in 93 developing countries (for a total of 242 million hectares in 2030). It projected that water withdrawals by the agriculture sector will increase by about 14% during 2000 – 2030 to meet the growing food demands (FAO, 2006). It is estimated that by 2050 in India, about 22 % of the geographic area and 17 % of the population will be under absolute water scarcity. The per capita availability of water which was about 1704 cubic meter in 2010 is projected to be 1235 cubic meter in 2050 (Anonymous, 2011). Infrastructure to increase the command area and minimize the gap of irrigation potential created and utilized is the dominant component of overall investment in agriculture (Anonymous, 2011). Besides this, judicious agricultural water management assists in ensuring good returns through efficient use of fertilizers and high yielding crop varieties. Above all, water will remain as a critical input for attaining sustainability in agricultural production. India’s current water supply is approximately 740 billion m3, which necessitates implementation of judicious water management technologies to enhance crop water productivity. In recent decades the world’s population has shown tremendous growth from an estimated 2.5 billion in the 1950’s to approximately 6.7 billion till date. It is expected that reduction in the average size of land holding, declining per capita water availability, deterioration of water quality etc. will seriously affect the sustainable use of water resources and will make it difficult to accomplish the target of producing 345 Mt of food grain in 2030 and 494 Mt in 2050 AD. To achieve the targeted food production, increase in the crop productivity from the present 2.3 to 4.0 t ha-1 under irrigated conditions and from 1.0 t ha-1 to 1.5 t ha-1 in rainfed area, productivity need to be increased at individual field level. This demands efficient use of water in agriculture, which can be achieved by reducing the losses of water and increasing the water uptake by the crops and it requires quantification of different water budgeting parameters like evapotranspiration and deep percolation.

ABSTRACT

Magnolia campbelii Hook.f. & Thomson is a deciduous tree species belonging to Magnoliaceae and is highly valued for its ornamental uses. The species is threatened by habitat degradation as well as its utility as timber. It is distributed in the eastern Himalaya, southern Myanmar, and Yunnan province of China. However, its exact distribution in the eastern Himalaya is unknown owing to rough terrain and remote location of the Himalayas. We modelled the environmental niche and delineated the potential habitats and distribution areas of the species in this study using ENVIREM dataset and Maxent software. Thermicity Index and Topographic Wetness were the critical environmental variables determining the species distribution in the eastern Himalaya as revealed by Jackknife analysis. Geographical projection of the modelled environmental niche indicates that most suitable areas for its distribution are the western part of Arunachal Pradesh, few pockets in Sikkim, and the central part of Bhutan. The results of the study have implications for in situ conservation of the species as well as identifying suitable areas for reintroduction.

Models Definitions

In social science research a model is a tentative description of what a social process, say the communication process or a system might be like. It is a tool of explanation and analyses, very often in a diagrammatic form, to show how the various elements of a situation being studied relate to each other.

The term model can also refer to a particular process or object, which is used as a point of reference, when an attempt to explain the unknown is being made. It basically comprises involving an analogy to throw up the similarities between the phenomena to be explained and one, which is well known, i.e., the model.

The simplest definition of a model is that it is an analogue. A model is a relatively well-developed analogy. Given two objects or processes which are dissimilar in many respects, one is an analogue of the other to the extent that the physical or logical structure of one re-presents the physical or logical structure of the other.

The advantage of models in communication research is that it allows the researcher to account for different variables in different communication situations. Models only represent systems or processes. Since they are not real, they are just symbolic ways of looking at systems to help us to think about them more lucidly. Again since models do now show every part of a system, they are usually incomplete in that sense. Even those that are shown are represented only in enough detail to help us look at the processes or features in which we are interested. Models give us an idea of complicated objects or events in a general way. They enable us to see how a particular communication event fits into the general pattern. They provide a classification for an old problems, and familiar events. They help us by providing a structure of references for purposes of study. Theories are not models and the most fundamental difference between a theory and a model is that the former is an explanation whereas the latter is a representation.

Introduction

The soil is an invaluable resource that sustains life in innumerable ways. It provides a dynamic foundation for agriculture, supporting growing crops, and serving as a habitat for organisms. It plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. Additionally, soil acts as a filter, purifying and storing water, and it reserves essential plant nutrients. however, soil resources face various threats that endanger their health and productivity. Soil erosion, the removal of the top layer of soil through natural or human-induced processes, poses a significant challenge. It not only leads to a loss of fertile soil but also causes widespread environmental degradation, and reduced agricultural productivity in response to this difficulty, soil conservation emerges as a principal priority. Soil conservation incorporates a range of practices and strategies to prevent soil erosion, and promote sustainable land use. By adopting and implementing effective soil conservation measures, we can safeguard this irreplaceable resource for future peers and ensure food security and environmental sustainability.

The main highlight of the study is to shed light on the causes and consequences of soil erosion, exploring different conservation practices and techniques; also to understand the vital processes and factors contributing to soil erosion, including wind and water erosion. Additionally, to study its impact on soil and crop production and strategies for different conservation practices to mitigate erosion, preserve soil fertility, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our agricultural systems and ecosystems.

Abiotic Stress Tolerance: The ability of plants to withstand and adapt to nonliving environmental stressors, such as drought, salinity, or extreme temperatures. Afforestation and Reforestation: Afforestation involves planting new forests in previously non-forested areas, while reforestation involves restoring degraded or deforested lands with trees to sequester carbon. Agrarian Society: A society characterized by agriculture as the primary means of subsistence and economic activity. Agrarian: Pertaining to the cultivation of land, agriculture, or rural life. Agricultural Chemistry: A branch of chemistry that focuses on chemical processes and substances related to agriculture, including soil chemistry, fertilizer composition, and pesticide development. Agricultural Diversification: The strategy of expanding the range of crops, livestock, or other agricultural activities in a rural area to increase income and food security. Agricultural Economics: A branch of economics that focuses on the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural goods and services, as well as the economic factors and policies that influence agricultural markets. Agricultural Extension: The application of scientific research and new technologies to agricultural practices through education and advisory services. Agricultural Innovation: The process of developing and adopting new ideas, practices, and technologies in agriculture. Modern and transgenic breeding approaches consist of modern plant breeding triangle, high-throughput phenotyping (HTP), marker-assisted selection (MAS), marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC), genomic selection (GS), genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genome editing. MAS accelerates trait identification through DNA markers, improving efficiency in selecting plants with desired traits. MABC employs molecular markers to facilitate gene introgression from donor parents (DPs) to superior recurrent parents (RPs). GS employs genome-wide markers to predict performance, revolutionizing breeding by considering both major and minor-effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Genome editing techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated protein 9) enable targeted gene modifications for desired traits. Genome editing involves selecting target genes, designing guide RNAs for Cas9, and introducing the CRISPR-Cas9 system into plants. This technology has been utilized to enhance crop productivity, sustainability, and disease resistance. Transgenic crops are designed to carry specific traits, such as pest resistance, virus resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and nutritional enrichment. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is highlighted as a tool for transgene introduction, offering advantages like low copy number integration and stable expression. Genetic engineering remains a promising avenue for creating disease-resistant crops and ensuring global food security.

Survival strategies of some plants help them to thrive in any adverse environmental conditions. We classify them as weeds or ruderals. Such weedy species have developed unique and effective physiological traits to withstand various stresses, and unique mechanisms to regulate growth under adverse environments. Climate change is a harsh reality observed in different parts of the world which brings new challenges in crop production and weed management.

Introduction of biotechnological tools in weed science and management has given new dimensions to weed research.

1. Introduction

Modern medicine relies heavily on biomaterials and tissue engineering, which are a broad category of materials designed to interact with biological systems in a therapeutic or diagnostic capacity. These materials, which are frequently polymers, natural or synthetic, are made to have particular physical, chemical, and biological characteristics in order to satisfy the demands of a range of medical applications (Holzapfel et al., 2013; Ozdil & Aydin, 2014). These materials can be produced, modified and characterized in a number of ways, according to the particular needs of the application, including 3D printing, molding, and machining (Jandyal et al., 2022). Biomaterials are extensively studied for their applications in tissue engineering, which comprises the recent developments into studying the disease models, micro-scale bone repairing, wound healing and other applications (Purnama et al., 2010). Biomaterial degradation and biocompatibility must be taken into account when developing implants or medical devices since the material's characteristics are tunable according the external or internal parameters. In order to produce biomaterials for use in healthcare applications, cooperation between specialists in biology, medicine, and materials science is needed, the upcoming advances in bioprinting, artificial graft and usage of artificial intelligence might give us an insight towards development in disease regression (Holzapfel et al., 2013; Khan et al., 2015).

The majority of the protein found in the food supply worldwide comes from animal or grain sources, which together account for around half of the total. First of all, fish and crustaceans are significant and excellent providers of amino acids, a form of protein that is essential to nutrition and is only present in trace amounts in cereals and grains. It turns out that these matters for global nutrition and that some low-income, food-deficient nations really benefit from it. Furthermore, fisheries are significant local sources of food, commerce, and revenue in many coastal developing and developed countries. This has prompted researchers and biotechnologists to look at the identification, use, and extraction of these biomaterials in healthcare settings (Raghavendra et al., 2015). The varied fish-derived biomaterials have a variety of uses, including as in tissue engineering, medication delivery, and wound healing, which has opened up new avenues for medical science to make scientific discoveries (Bhat & Kumar, 2013).

The modern biotechnologies (animal cloning, stem cells, and transgenesis) have contributed immensely to increasing livestock productivity, particularly in developed countries, and could help to alleviate poverty and hunger, reduce the threats of diseases and ensure environmental sustainability in developing countries. A wide range of biotechnologies are available and have already been used in developing countries in the animal science disciplines, i.e., animal reproduction, genetics and breeding; animal nutrition and production; and animal health. In animal reproduction, genetics and breeding, artificial insemination (AI) has perhaps been the most widely applied animal biotechnology, particularly in combination with cryopreservation, allowing significant genetic improvement for productivity as well as the global dissemination of selected male germplasm. Complementary technologies such as monitoring reproductive hormones, oestrus synchronization and semen sexing can improve the efficiency of AI. Embryo transfer provides the same opportunities for females, albeit on a much smaller scale and at a much greater price. Biotechnologies in animal health are used to increase the precision of disease diagnosis as well as for disease control and treatment. The Biotechnology Industry Organization claims that the genetic engineering of animals in agriculture offers ''tremendous benefit to the animal by enhancing health, well-being and animal welfare'' (Gottlieb and Wheeler 2008). Further, improvements are still needed in product composition and production efficiency, especially in growth, disease resistance, and reproduction. In this regard, transgenic animals stem cells, cloning and other emerging biotechnologies will have important roles in producing more and higher quality animal food.

The foundation of modern insect classification was laid by Brauer in 1885. According to Brauer insects were classified as Subclass: Apterygogenea (pterous) and Pterygogenea (winged) based on:

• Presence or absence of wings.

• Mouthparts.

• Metamorphosis.

• Number of Malpighian tubules.

• The nature of wings.

• Thoracic segments etc.

The earliest classification of insects was based on habits and habitats and on certain gross anatomical features that define the general aspects of different kinds. In classifying insects, not only anatomical characters but also facts pertaining to physiology, biology, distribution, ecology and sometime cytology of the species is taken into consideration.

Prelude

The rapid and unprecedented changes in the external environment such as liberalisation of the economy, globalisation of international markets, deregulation of the financial systems and implications of various clauses under WTO exerted considerable pressure on the agricultural system. Moreover, the major challenges facing the world today includes are: managing the environment in a sustainable manner, managing the exploding rate of population growth and urbanisation, ensuring food security, meeting health, education and literacy needs and eliminating poverty.

Meeting these challenges requires information, knowledge and participatory process of social change. Communication is an essential element in this process. According to Balit (1996) who pointed out that least expensive input for rural development is knowledge. Knowledge and information are basic ingredients of food security and are essential for facilitating rural development and bringing about social and economic change.

The 21^st century is witnessing a computer revolution in which information processing and retrieval are being reliably done at incredible speeds. Computers are used for storing, analysing and distributing information of all kinds including words, numbers, pictures, illustration, sounds and movies. Computer aided knowledge dissemination mechanism help to reach the unreached and foster new voices and new leaders.

According to Aasher (1995) microcomputer technologies have the potential to support all the major functions of agricultural extension, namely the technology generation, diffusion, adoption continuum and the efficient handling of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive types of information.

Indian horticulture has made a rapid stride, converting the country from food scarce to self sufficiency. The horticulture, which includes fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers and medicinal and aromatic plants, has proved beyond doubt its potentiality for gainful diversification. One of the significant developments is that horticulture has moved from rural confine to commercial production, and this changing scenario has encouraged private sector investment in production system management. Since the growing of fruit crops is highly rewarding to the farmers in terms of returns per unit area, the horticulture sector is expected to contribute significantly for the food and nutritional security, employment opportunity and poverty alleviation.

In recent past, several innovations and new initiatives have been made both in research and development for improving production, productivity, quality and marketing and to identify critical gaps in various emerging areas in fruits & horticulture technology. High yielding superior fruit varieties for commercial cultivation

Abstract

Plantbreeding is an ancientart practiced throughselection ofplants fordesirable traits. Over a period of time it has evolved into scientific discipline with various methodologiesbasedon theories and principles ofgenetics. Since the rediscovery of Mendel’s law, there has been accelerated increase in yield of various crop plants due to development of high yielding varieties. Conventional approaches of following phenotypic selection from a variable population in early generation followed by yield testing in later generations have been highly successful in most of the crop species. This coupled with hybrid varieties led to significant increase in food-grain production during later half of the 20^th century. At present manycrops are facing yield plateau asthey have reached their maximum genetic potential. The growing condition is also deteriorating due to changing climate. There is an urgent need among breeders to utilize full arsenal of techniques available to them to sustain crop productivity. Molecular markers and marker assisted selection has come as a boon to the breeders to increase the efficiency ofselection in early generation breeding especially for traits whose phenotypic evaluation is difficult. Further, transgenic technology has the potential to incorporate genes from diverse sources, thus enriching the gene pool from which breeders can search for specific traits. Although at present there is skepticism about transgenic crops among public but this may become a viable strategy in future.

Meat processing is the set of methods and techniques used to bring substantial chemical and physical changes in the natural state of meat. These are the methods which are used for making meat and their products attractive, nutritious and marketable as well as for the prolongation of shelf-life. In processing techniques, grinding, chopping, addition of seasoning, alteration techniques for colour, heat treatments etc. are included but cutting, trimming and deboning are not included in processing operations.

History

Meat processing dates back to the prehistoric ages and probably the first processed meat product was sundried meat. Lator it turns to burning of meat over wood fire while salting and smoking of meat was practiced first time in the time of Homer, 850 B.C. In 63B.C.-14 A.D. at the reign of Augustus honey was tried for preservation of meat. Lator various types of cooking such as roasting, smoking, steaming and oven baking came in existance. Salt-preservation was especially common for foods including meat and meat products for warrior and sailor’s diets, until the introduction of canning methods.

Modern food processing technology in the 19th and 20th century was largely developed to serve military needs. In 1809 Nicolus Appert invented a vacuum bottling technique that would supply food for French troops and this contributed to the development of tinning and then canning by Peter Durand in 1810. Although initially expensive and somewhat hazardous due to the lead used in cans. Canned goods would later become a staple around the world. Pasturization discovered by Louis Pasteur in 1862 was a significant advance in ensuring the micro-biological safety of food. In 20^th century, food processing advances with the development of spray drying, freeze drying and the introduction of artificial sweeteners, colouring agents and preservatives such as sodium benzoate. In late 20^th century ready to eat meat food products were introduced to cater the need of consumers.

The paddy grain contains a rough outer covering called husk. It accounts for about one-fifth to one - fourth of the weight of paddy. The inner kernel, called brown rice or dehusked rice, again contains some soft outer layers, jointly called bran. It accounts for about 6-8% of the brown rice weight, including the small germ (1-2% by weight) located in one corner. Rice milling is the process of removing the husk and a part of the bran from paddy in order to produce edible rice. Rice milling system ranges from the home-scale to the large, complex modern rice-processing installations. They include hand-pounding equipment, single hullers, emery sheller-cum-huller mills, emery sheller-cum-cone polisher mills and the modern rubber – roller rice mills. Rice milling industry does not only mill rice but it also carries many other essential functions, such as cleaning and grading, drying, storage, quality control etc. for the production of better quality rice. All these processes are discussed in this paper.

Unlike other food grains, rice is mostly consumed as cooked whole grain, Milling technology is therefore geared to obtain maximum outturn of milled rice and to reduce breakage to the minimum. The single huller mills are by and large located in villages or in localities where paddy is custom milled for produces and they still handle the bulk of the country’s production. The large-capacity rice mills located in urban or semi-urban areas for commercial milling are of ½ to 4 tones per hour capacity and handle the rest of the paddy milled. Some battery hullers are still in operation as large commercial mills, specially for milling parboiled paddy.

Introduction
The 2022 edition of the United Nation’s global forest sector outlook for 2050 presented an update on the current patterns of wood consumption, its rising tendency, and projected future demand of primary processed wood to total 3.1 billion cubic meters of round wood equivalents (FAO, 2022). In addition, up to 199 million m³ would be required to substitute for non-renewable materials. Planted forests contributed around 46 percent to the global industrial round wood supply in 2020. However, globally the supply of wood from planted forests is always lower than the actual demand. Increasing population, urbanisation, economic development and consumption pattern are some of the major driving causes behind the demand in growth of wood and wood products. Wood security is defined as long-term availability of wood and wood products (sawn wood, veneer, plywood, particleboard, pulp, wood fuel and other primary wood products) for domestic and industrial requirements. The deficiency in the wood supply chain will continue to increase, and when the world population touches 9.4 to 10.2 billion, a 22 to 34% increase, the demand-supply imbalance will also increase. This supply gap would result in a shift in consumption patterns and lead to increase in environmentally harmful products such as petroleum-based plastics. Hence to meet the basic wood demand in 2050, at world level an additional 33 million ha of highly productive plantation forest would need to be established to meet the industrial round wood demand (FAO, 2022).
New demands for forest ecosystem continue to surge based on the Sustainable Development Goals, and mitigation of climate change related issues, water and other goods and services. Along with policy measures to directly act on existing forest resources conservation, increase in tree plantations with management interventions to increase productivity is necessary to fulfil the wood supply demands (McMaho and Jackson, 2019). Globally, the area under plantation forestry is on the rise (McEwan et al. 2020). Numerous studies (Silva et al. 2019; Carle et al. 2020; Pinnschmidt et al. 2023), highlight that plantation forests increasingly fulfil the ecological services provided by natural forests. Food processing industries are the fastest growing in India. India is the largest producer of milk, bananas, mangoes, guavas, papaya, ginger and okra. It is the second largest producer of wheat, rice, fruits, vegetables, tea, sugarcane and cashew nut. It is the third largest producer of cereals, coconut, lettuce, chicory, nutmeg, mace, cardamom and pepper at the global level (Highlights of Agriculture Census, 2010-11, http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=132799). Most part of the income is spent on foods. It is important to establish and nurture mutually beneficial relationships with global food processing, food retail and related supply chain organizations. This will in turn help in the realization of significant business growth opportunities in India, through newer technologies, innovations and ways of value additions. The geographical location of India helps in the export of items to other countries. It is connected to Europe, Middle East and Africa from the western coast and to Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Australia and New Zealand from the eastern coast. Food processing is a priority sector for the Indian Government, especially in recent times with “Make in India” initiative.The country is considered as one of the most favourable markets because of the easy and affordable credit and other fiscal incentives. The total consumption of food and beverages in India is US$ 369 billion which is expected to increase to US$1.142 trillion and the output in the food processing sector might increase to US$ 958 billion by 2025. This offers a vast market opportunity by the Indian food processing, food retail, transport, logistics and related infrastructure sectors to players in the food processing value chain. The market for plant and machinery in the food processing sector is estimated in the year 2024-25 to be USD 51.41 billion as compared to the current value of USD 17.3 billion (2016-17).

Introduction There are multiple methods or trapping technologies available for pest management in agriculture. Some of the method discussed in literature are described here. Insect pests in an agricultural field can cause damage to the crops by infecting the crops with diseases and thus may affect adverse impact on its quality. Nowadays, farmers set up insect traps like sticky papers that comes in different colours such as yellow, green and blue to monitor the number of pests. Different insects are specifically/ particularly attracted to the colours of the sticky paper commonly such as yellow or blue (Espinoza et al?, 2016).

In addition to the conventional treatment methods i.e., surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, there are some adjuvant targeted therapies which block the growth of cancer by altering the individually expressed specific molecules responsible for tumor cell proliferation, survival, metastasis or microenvironment. The majorly studied adjuvant therapies include use of hormones, tyrosine kinase receptors, anti-cyclooxygenases, anti-tumor suppressor gene p53 and epithelial-mesenchymal transition inhibition.

The main aim of hormonal therapy (Table 2) is to inhibit the hormone induced stimulation of carcinoma cells, which could be achieved either by ovariohysterectomy or different treatments like use of specific estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS), aromatase inhibitors for suppression of estrogen synthesis etc. A commonly used estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist drug tamoxifen for treatment of ER positive breast cancer in women, has also been tested against CMTs. However, it is not a viable treatment option in dogs due to associated side effects. Ovariohysterectomy is considered as a better and practical solution. The use of hormonal therapy in CMTs is based on the evidence of hormone dependency of these tumors as well as lessons learnt from hormonal therapy outcomes from human breast cancer. This therapy significantly ameliorates the recurrence of breast cancers and prolongs the survival rates in women having breast cancers positive for hormone receptors. However, the results of the canine investigations, which are all retrospective and non-randomized, are contradictory. Detailed research and prospective randomized trials, where effect of OHE is studied in context of hormone receptor status, are required to determine the role of hormonal therapy in CMTs.
