Supply chain management or inventory management is an important and integral component of commercial breeding activities practiced by the private seed companies whose over all research efforts in terms of developing and commercially releasing high performing cultivars and hybrids get defeated unless the product reaches to the end users that is the farmers. Seed supply chain management is the lifeline of any seed business especially when the seed business is under private sector seed companies whose delivery is very strong. Supply chain management refers to the process of ordering, storing, and using a company’s inventory. These include the management of raw materials, components, and finished products, as well as warehousing and processing such items and ultimately delivering virtually to the door steps of the farmers through a strong network of dealers/distributors/retailers. For companies with complex supply chains and manufacturing processes, balancing the risks of inventory gluts and shortages is especially difficult and challenging.

The process of supply chain management is a continuously evolving process, ready to deal with the unforeseen situations like the situation created by COVID-19 pandemic forcing countries after countries going for lockdown and bringing the entire business operations including material and men transport to a grinding halt. However, even under these extremely challenging situations, governments fully know that agricultural activities cannot be fully stopped to avoid resurgence of hunger and malnutrition. However, despite the window allowed by the government for running the supply of essential goods including agricultural inputs like seed, agrochemicals and farm machines, manufacturing the agro-inputs including seeds and their distribution to the endpoints has become extremely difficult. A few companies have devised new processes to run seed supply using completely new and innovative approaches, for example, In Bayer’s first-ever e-commerce collaboration in India, the company has tied up with Agro-Star, a Pune-based e-commerce firm in the agricultural segment. Under the partnership, farmers can order Bayer’s seeds and crop protection products for their entire crop lifecycle and receive agronomic advisory through Agro-Stars digital agri-tech platform. Home delivery of agri-inputs can currently be availed by farmers in North, West and Central India, with plans to extend the scope to other geographies in the future. In the current COVID-19 lockdown situation, the partnership has enabled last mile delivery of products for multiple crops directly to farmer’s doorsteps.

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, 2n = 2x = 18, Family Brassicaceae, cross-pollinated, sporophytic self-incompatibility) is traditional European crop that has become widespread in Asia. As per Horticulture Statistics at a Glance-2018, published by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India (MAFW, 2018), during 2016, global production of cauliflower and broccoli was 25.23 million tons from 1.34 million ha with a productivity of 18.82 tons/ha. Bulk of area and production (>70%) was accounted for by China, I rank (0.52 million ha area, 10.26 million tons production, 19.73 tons/ha productivity) and India, II rank (0.43 million ha area, 8.20 million tons production, 19.0 tons/ha productivity). Other countries in the descending order were USA, Spain, Mexico, Italy, France, Poland, Pakistan and Egypt.

Within India, as per 2017-18 figures, top 10 cauliflower growing states are West Bengal (74, 000 ha), Bihar (62, 000 ha), MP (46, 000 ha), Orissa (41, 000 ha), Haryana (40, 000 ha), Gujarat (25, 000 ha), Chhattisgarh (24, 000 ha), Jharkhand (22, 000 ha), UP (18, 000 ha) and Punjab (18, 000).

Carrot (Daucus carota, 2n = 2x = 18, family Apiaceae or Umbelliferae, cross-pollinated) is among the top ten most economically important vegetable crops globally in terms of area, production and market value (Simon et al, 2008). Almost half of the more than 42 million tons of the global production -by far- is harvested in China, followed by Uzbekistan, Russia and the United States of America. Ukraine, Poland, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan complete the top 10.This production comes from approximately an area of 1.5 million ha giving a productivity of 28 tons/ha. India produced 1.6 million tons of carrot during 2017-18 from 96000 ha area resulting into a productivity of 16.66 tons/ha. In India, top 7 states in carrot production are Haryana, Bihar, Punjab, MP, UP, Karnataka and Assam. Because of breeding of cultivars adapted to both summer and winter seasons, carrot is available round the year.

The conventional orange colour varieties of Europe are rich in beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A and contain appreciable quantity of thiamine and riboflavin. The red carrots are rich in lycopene, an important pigment for healthy eyes and general body growth, besides having anti-cancerous properties. Black carrots are rich in anthocyanins. Further, carrots have medicinal properties.

Carrot has two distinct groups with regard to flowering and seed production. These are tropical and temperate types. Tropical or oriental cultivars are annual and adapted to high temperature conditions and these do not require low temperature exposure for flowering. They flower and set seeds freely in Indian plains after winter months with the advent of long day conditions in spring. The temperate/European types behave like biennial crops and require 6-8 weeks of vernalization at mean temperature of 4.8 to 10° C after they have passed the full root development phase for production of seed stalks (Sureja and Kalia, 2012).

The content of digital libraries includes data and metadata. Digital libraries are constructed, Collected, and organized by a community of users and their functional capabilities support the information needs and uses of that community.

A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats and accessible by computers. The digital content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks. A digital library is a type of information retrieval system. Man is a communicator of information, not simply a user of tools. The history of civilization is the history of improved means of communication. Man always desires to improve the means of communicating. Documents are the artifacts of recorded knowledge that is information. Documents are meant for communication knowledge to larger audiences. Libraries have stored and served the documents to the users.

Thus, libraries have performed as one of the links between generators of information and its users. The developments of libraries from print paper based libraries to digital libraries seem an illustration of man’s never-ending desire to improve his means of communication. In the digital world highway, there is stress on three factors (a) Awareness of information: it provides breadth of vision (b) awareness of technology: gives the power to make the visions manifest, and (c) awareness of needs facilitates the insight to use professional skills and talents to greater effect.

In order to have a better understanding of the urban setting of an Indian historic city, the ancient city of Allahabad is discussed. The history and development of this ancient city has been studied in a chronological fashion. This part of the book focuses on the period:

Delhi, Capital City

Delhi, the capital of India has a unique urban sprawl. This city is an urban maze comprising of old heritage areas like walled city Shahjahanabad, Lutyens New Delhi and the newer areas built after independence. Delhi has been the capital of our country for centuries. In 1947 it became the capital of free and independent India. In 1956 was made a Union territory and National Capital Territory on 1^st February’1992.

Situated between the Himalayan and the Aravali range. It is surrounded on three sides by Haryana and on the east by Uttar Pradesh. The total area of the territory is 1,483 sq.km. The climate is extreme dryness with intense hot summer and extreme cold winters. NCT has 209 villages and 7 towns including the Delhi Urban Agglomerations.

Introduction

The rapid pace of urbanisation and abrupt growth of population in few large cities in India has become a standing menace to balanced socio-economic development of India. The rapid pace of development in cities had always attracted investors and entrepreneurs to set their enterprises leading to creation of employment opportunities in these cities. On the contrary, the lack of opportunities in rural areas has created a backwash effect leading to creation of slums in and around potential growth poles (i.e. large cities and growing cities).

3.1 Introduction

By the end of the twentieth century one of our most important scientific accomplishments has been the explicit realization that the human population is changing the earth system. Some of these changes are occurring at a remarkable rate. We know, with certainty, that human activities are changing land use, habitats, the chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere and water, rates and balance of biogeochemical processes, and diversity of life on the planet (Vitousek et al. 1997). One prominent mode of human disturbance has resulted from activities that mobilize the nutrient elements nitrogen and phosphorus through land clearing, production and applications of fertilizer, discharge of human waste, animal production, and combustion of fossil fuels (Nixon 1995).

As a result of these activities, surface waters and ground waters throughout the world now have elevated concentrations of N and P compared to concentrations even in the middle of the 20th century. Our mobilization of N and P has accelerated the fluxes of these elements to coastal waters, and fertilization of coastal ecosystems is now a serious environmental problem because it stimulates plant growth and disrupts the balance between the production and metabolism of organic matter in the coastal zone. Coastal eutrophication is a recently recognized phenomenon (Nixon 1995), and scientific investigation of this human disturbance has progressed for only a few decades, so our conceptual model of the problem is evolving rapidly. Here, I describe 2 phases in the evolution of our conceptual model of how nutrient enrichment disrupts coastal ecosystems, and then finish with a view to the future, suggesting critical questions that must be answered as we work to advance and broaden our understanding of this complex environmental problem. This examination of conceptual models is designed as a complement to the excellent general reviews of coastal eutrophication (Vollenweider 1992, Heip 1995, Nixon 1995, Jørgensen & Richardson 1996, National Research Council 2000).

7.1 Introduction

The coast is one of the most important boundaries in the world. It separates the marine part of the world from the continents. It separates the salt-water communities from fresh water communities; it separates land life from water borne life but amphibians living both environments (Fig. 7.1).

Some of the marine organisms move towards estuary for reproduction with less water salinity. The coastline as such is not a stable. It fluctuates in place over considerable distances due to erosion and sedimentation, but also due to the relative change of sea level with respect to land. The coastal zone is thus a very mobile part of the earth from a geographical point of view. Due to its specific geophysical properties, the coast is also a very important area for the development of flora and fauna. There is hardly any other part of the world that houses such a variety of species, both in flora and fauna.

The abundance of opportunities along the coast has also attracted a lot of human activities. The coastal zone has become an indispensable resource for mankind. It provides excellent opportunities for fisheries, housing, recreation, transport, defense purpose, industrial activities and many others. The influx of man with their social and economic activities, their needs for safe housing, food, drinking water, and with the tremendous quantities of waste they are producing poses at the same time a serious threat to the unique features of the coastal zone. It is therefore necessary to study this valuable region so as to prevent that competing activities are gradually causing depletion of the resources in the coastline. The following figures (Fig. 7.1and 7.2) show the typical coastal area of rocky coast and sandy coast.

8.1 Introduction

A lake is a body of water or other liquid of considerable size surrounded entirely by land (Fig. 8.1). A vast majority of lakes on Earth are fresh water, and most lie in the Northern Hemisphere at higher latitudes. In ecology, the environment of a lake is referred to as lacustrine.

Large lakes are occasionally referred to as “inland seas” and small seas are occasionally referred to as lakes. Smaller lakes tend to put the word “lake” after the name, as in Green Lake, while larger lakes often invert the word order, as in Lake Ontario, at least in North America. The term lake is also used to describe a feature such as Lake Dal, which is a wet basin most of the time but may become filled under seasonal conditions of heavy rainfall and snowfall. Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for hydro electric power supply, recreational purposes, industrial use, agricultural use, or domestic water supply.

3.1 Physical characteristics

There is obviously an association between the amount of rainfall and the amount of soil erosion, i.e. more rain goes with more erosion, and less rain with less erosion, but in statistical terms the correlation between the two is poor. The same total quantity of rain can on different occasions result in widely differing amounts of erosion, and so other more specific measures are required to describe the ability of rainfall to cause erosion. In this chapter we shall establish the known facts about the main physical properties of rainfall, and then in chapter 4 show how these properties are related to the erosive power of rainfall.

3.1.1 Quantity of rainfall

Any measure of rainfall amount is a sample, and so associated with the inevitable problems of sampling, namely, ⁴is the sample representative of the whole?’ and ‘is the sample measured accurately?’ On both counts the data of rainfall which are usually available are of very doubtful reliability. Considering firstly the size of the sample measured, a very intensive network of rain gauges such as that established in an experimental catchment might be as dense as one gauge per 25 hectares, but this corresponds (with a 125 mm diameter gauge) to a sample of about one in 20 million, which would for any other scientific measurement be considered totally inadequate. The density of gauges in a country which considers itself very well provided might be one gauge per 25 square kilometres - a sample of one in 2 000 million, and in an undeveloped country the density of one gauge per 2 500 square kilometres is a sample of 1 in 200 000 000 000! Secondly, the siting of this remarkably small number of gauges is usually arranged primarily on convenience, eg where they can be easily read and contained, with little or no consideration of whether the site is representative of the whole. Thirdly, the accuracy of the measurement is usually unknown and studies have shown that variations in the shape and size of the instrument, and in the height at which it is mounted, and the way it is shielded from the wind, can seriously affect the recorded amount of rainfall. Clearly, even the apparently straightforward question of how much rain falls is not answered as precisely as might be imagined from a survey of rainfall tables and maps.

12.1 Introduction

Performance of an orchard mostly depends on the availability and quality of land and water resources and their management in fruit production. Before taking a decision on all the other possible alternatives under consideration, it is important to undertake feasibility study of the available resources to the orchard management. Other conditions in the growing environment, such as climate and weather conditions, disease and pest management and other factors affecting crop growth also affect production. With ever increasing population in India, today the major problem confronted in fruit cultivation is to improve or at least sustain the production to meet ever increasing demand for fresh or processed fruits. Fruit production can vary widely in response to management of available resources. India cannot afford to mismanage its natural resources (Sharma, 2012). Therefore, judicious utilization of available resources should be done. The following resource constraints are required to be judiciously handled in the management of fruit orchards:

1. Land and Soil management
2. Irrigation water management
3. Solar radiation management

The muscular system allows movement and necessary functions such as circulation, digestion, and breathing. It is made up of muscles and connective tissue, such as tendons. The muscular system also helps provide support and shape. In the body, muscles have primary functions to provide motion, maintain posture, and generate heat.

The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes that produce sperm (or spermatozoa), ducts that transport the sperm to the penis and glands that add secretions to the sperm to make semen. The adult mammalian testis performs two important functions, spermatogenesis and male sex hormone production. It is an organ structurally designed to produce the haploid male gametes from diploid postnatal germ-line stem cells, i.e. type A spermatogonia.

Growth is a correlated increase in the mass of the body in definite intervals of time, in a way characteristic of the species i.e. increase in size and weight. This means growth includes the protein, fat and mineral deposition in the body. Growth is an irreversible increase in the metabolically active protoplasm. There is a characteristic rate of growth for each species and a characteristic adult size and development. Maximum size and development are fixed by heredity and nutrition is an essential factor determining whether this maximum will be reached. An optimum nutritional regime is the one which enables the organism to take full advantage of its heredity.

Animals contract poisoning due to a variety of toxic chemicals (inorganic and farm chemicals), phytotoxins, mycotoxins, and zootoxins, which is often
fatal. Toxic chemicals and poisonous plants represent a tremendous economic impact. However, more often the poisoning episodes go undiagnosed. In
general, poisoning is suspected when number of previously healthy animals show same symptoms and severity of illness at the same time and the same
lesions at necropsy.

Co-operation and Mutual trust, are some of the most cherished values, as given by the Ancient Indian wisdom and is part of our Indian culture. There is a saying, “Many hands make light work.” It is only through mutual trust, cooperation and team spirit can there be all round progress and prosperity, and success for everyone concerned due to the synergistic effects of combined efforts.

Enough literature is available to understand the concept of extension. But are there any efforts to understand the in-tensions of ex-tension? Why should we emphasize on inner tensions of extension? to be a successful extension professional for bringing about the desirable changes in the behaviour of stakeholders, we need to understand the inner-tensions of extension in addition to the concept of extension.

Since inception of extension services, the model adopted for transfer of technology was dominated Technology, wherein the core emphasis was on the transfer of technology. The end product was the partial adoption of the technology or non-adoption of the technology. Learning from the experiences, modifications were made in the model and came out with extension mediated technology transfer system, wherein the technology is inseparable component of extension, which was combined with the human element or the societal element. The approaches adopted by different models of extension service delivery were also diverse.

The first model of extension service delivery the Public extension system or the Ministry of Agriculture, which delivers the extension services in the form of a systems approach. The relationship with the farmers or the end users is ‘take it or leave it’. Whether the receivers are gaining it or not, whether they do understand it or not, ultimately we are transferring it, and are ending it with the target oriented approach.

Our emotions play quite a significant role in guiding and directing our behavior. Many a times they are seen to dominate our behavior in such a way that we have no solution other than behaving as per their wish. On the other hand, if a person has no emotional current then he becomes crippled in terms of living his life in a normal way. Hence, emotions play a key role in providing a particular direction to our behavior and thus shaping our personality according to their development.

Etymologically, the word emotion is derived from the Latin word ‘emovere’ which means ‘to stir up’ or ‘to excite’. Emotion implies a state of being stirred up or aroused in one way or another. Therefore, emotion may be understood as an agitated or excited state of our mind and body. It involves extensive visual disturbance and includes many feeling tones or varying degrees of satisfaction or annoyance. Feeling may be a simple degree of emotional experience. Psychologists and physiologists are in agreement that emotion involves feelings, impulses and physiological reactions.

Thus, whatever may be the terminology used by different psychologists, their definition tends to describe “emotions as some sort of feelings or affective experiences which are characterized by some physiological changes that generally lead them to perform some or the other type of behavioral act”.

• Aonla has cell rejuvenating properties and therefore, used in maintaining good health of skin and hair.

• Aonla helps to keep the hair glossy and shining.

1. Introduction

Chrysanthemum is commonly known as ‘Guldaoudi’, “Queen of the East”, “Glory of East” or “Autumn Queen”. It is one of the most beautiful and widely cultivated flowers that can be grown for its aesthetic value as well as for its commercial potential. The word chrysanthemum is derived from two Greek words, viz. “Chrysos” means gold and “Anthemon” means ‘flower’ i.e. golden flower. Chrysanthemum is the only crop that offers a great genetic diversity of flower colour, shape, forms, size, easy to propagate, growing habit, longer flowering duration and excellent vase life. Based on the shape of flower heads and floret arrangement of petals it can be used as pot plants for indoors and outdoors decoration as well as exhibition purpose; as cut flowers for flower arrangements, bouquets making and vase decoration; loose flower for making garlands, worshipping purpose and for bedding and garden decoration. Tall cultivars are suitable for background planting in borders and the dwarf and compact can be planted in front rows. 

1. Introduction

Karonda is widespread throughout India, primarily in arid and semi-arid regions. As a hedge plant, the Karonda tree is frequently grown in residential gardens, farmer’s fields, and orchards. Karonda is widely used as a condiment or ingredient to Indian pickle and spices. It is a commonly growing indigenous shrub in India that may thrive in marginal and wasteland areas where other commercially important crops are unsuited. Karonda fruits are used in processed goods like as jam, jelly, squash, syrup, and chutney, and they are in high demand on the international market. Karonda is a rich source of nutrition and have highest Iron. The karonda fruits also contain vitamin C and it has antiscorbutic properties and helps to cure anaemia (Table 1). The fruits of Karonda are also used in many ayurvedic formulations. Root extract is used to reduce Chest pain.

1. Introduction

The word ‘PLASTIC’ is a Greek word which involves two words ‘PLASSIEN’ and ‘PLASTIKOS’. Denotation of word is to mould or shape into a soft substance which can be permanent or temporary. The use of plastics in agriculture as well as in horticulture has made substantial progress during the last decade. We all know that plastics contribute not only in planting but also in post-harvest handling and processing of many agri-horticulture crops. At every stage of horticultural crop life cycle plastics are used i.e. in seeds and fruits packaging, planting and propagation, mulching, irrigation, harvesting and preservation etc.

3.1 Introduction

Fish are the only true aquatic vertebrates. These exploit every nook and cranny of the water domain. They are notable for their vast numbers and perplexing forms. In the phylogenetic history of vertebrates, this is the first group of animals to develop biting jaws. The origin, evolution and interrelationships of fishes are not fully understood due to incomplete fossil records and a scarcity of primitive types. The early appearance of bone, cartilage and enamel-like substances was crucial in the evolution of fish.

Introduction

Fisheries is a fast-growing and important sector for providing nutritional security and supporting livelihood in many countries. The global fish production currently stands at 179.9mt with a contribution of 112mt from marine and 65.43mt from inland sector (FAO, 2022). India is no exception to this; fisheries provide nutritious food and livelihood to millions. Our country ranks second in the world next to China in total fish production and aquaculture production. It contributes 14.7% to world fish production. Currently, fisheries is one of the fastest growing food production sectors in India with annual growth rate of 10.34% and annual production of 16.25mt. It contributes 1.1% to the national GDP, 6.7% to the agricultural GDP and provide livelihood to about 14 million. The inland fisheries and aquaculture contribute 12.12mt to the total fish production (DAHDF, 2023).

Fish production in India has gradually and definitively shifted from marine to inland fish production due to the rapid growth of the inland fisheries sector. Aquaculture development, including refinement of production protocols, introduction of new species and culture system, concomitant growth in input supply (seed, feed, medicine and chemicals), emphasis on education, training and skill development, intensive network of extension system and policy support has led to a notable increase of inland aquaculture, which currently contributes to more than 70% of inland fish production of the country. In addition, high profits in aquaculture coupled with limited water and land resources have led to system intensification using high rearing density and high protein feeds to boost productivity in closed or semi-closed systems (Zaki et al., 2020). In order to reduce mounting pressure on land resources, vis-a-vis to meet the country’s fish demand, the production must come from comparatively under-exploited fisheries resources through technological interventions. India has abundant and diverse inland aquatic resources with huge fisheries potential (Sharma et al., 2010). Fisheries management has evolved, acknowledging the intricate connections between individual fisheries, ecosystems, and human activities. Discards, the portion of the catch discarded at sea, have garnered attention due to their significant global impact. Analysing the global research landscape on discards, the USA, Spain, and Australia lead in publications, highlighting the global interest in addressing this issue. This review article explores the reasons for discarding, its consequences, and the subsequent fate of discarded catch. Discards result from factors like economic considerations, fishing regulations, and storage constraints. The aftermath of discarding involves various outcomes; the survivability of discarded fish varies, with high mortality observed in small fishes and those with gas bladders, death, or being used as bait. The timeline of discards, spanning from the 1970s to the present, reflects the increasing awareness and international efforts to address this issue. In 2019, the estimated annual global discards were 10.5 million tonnes, recorded significantly in the northwest Pacific and southwest Atlantic regions. This review article delves into gear-wise and species-wise discards, revealing variations in discarding practices across fisheries. The Indian scenario highlights the decline in discards, especially in shrimp freezer trawlers. The decline in discards is attributed to changes in fishing technologies such as bycatch reduction devices, management actions like discard bans, quantifying the economic disincentives due to discards, and societal attitudes that aim to mitigate discards. Regulations and initiatives worldwide, assessing discards in fisheries is crucial for sustainable resource utilization, as depicted in a flowchart illustrating the necessity of such assessments. Three female goats with age of 3, 4 and 24 month with bodyweight 7, 6 and 15 kg, respectively were presented at Veterinary Clinical Complex, Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go-AnusandhanSansthan, Mathura, DUVASU during April-May 2024, with a history of right unilateral swelling below the ear and submandibular region. Based on physical examination, radiography and ultrasonography, swelling was found to be a fluid filled cystic structure. Exploratory puncture of the affected areas revealed colourless transparent fluid. Surgical exploration was done and the cystic structure was identified as Coenurus gaigeriupon parasitological inspection due to the presence of its characteristic four distinctive suckers on the scolices and a rostellum with a double crown of hooks. Coenurus gaigeri is the intermediate stage of Taenia multicepsgaigeri. Following surgical intervention, the animals were treated with praziquantel, antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory medication. By the 7th postoperative day, the animals showed uneventful recovery without any complications.

Any item categorized as “perishable” typically requires cold chain management. This includes food products such as meat, seafood, and fresh produce, as well as medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
Although, modern transportation is a relatively recent development, the  practice of moving temperature-sensitive products dates back to the late 1700s when the British used ice to preserve fish. By the late 1800s, ice was widely used to transport perishables. Dairy products were shipped from rural areas to urban markets. Cold chain technology has long been a crucial component of global trade and will continue to play a vital role in the future.
COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS
A cold chain is a specialized supply chain designed for handling perishable and temperature-sensitive goods, commonly referred to as cool cargo. These include fresh produce, meat, dairy, seafood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, flowers, wine, and other delicate products. To preserve the quality and integrity of these perishable items, specific lowtemperature conditions must be maintained throughout the supply chain. Certain products require refrigeration; others must be kept frozen, while some demand extreme conditions—often referred to as an ultralow chain or deep freeze. Any failure to maintain the appropriate temperature can result in product spoilage, compromising safety and quality, and ultimately leading to significant financial losses.

Natural soil health management plays a crucial role in ensuring longterm productivity, resilience, and environmental sustainability. One of the key practices in natural farming for maintaining soil health is the use of Jeevamrutha, a fermented microbial culture prepared using cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and a small quantity of local soil. When applied to fields, Jeevamrutha acts as a catalytic agent that stimulates biological activity in the soil, promoting the growth of beneficial microbes that enhance nutrient cycling and improve soil fertility. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) is a pivotal international legal instrument under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), dedicated to regulating the transboundary movement, handling, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) derived through modern biotechnology that may adversely affect biological diversity, human health, or the environment. Adopted in January 2000 in Cartagena, Colombia, and entering into force on September 11, 2003, the Protocol represents a global consensus on biosafety governance amidst the rapid expansion of genetic engineering technologies.
9.1.2 Objectives of the Cartagena Protocol
The principal objective of the Cartagena Protocol is:
“To contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, and specifically focusing on transboundary movements.” (Article 1, CPB)

Their inclusion in crop rotations not only boosts soil health but also supports food security, especially in developing countries where they are a key source of plant based protein and nutrients. The impact of climate change, including rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events, presents significant challenges to agriculture. In this context, grain legumes demonstrate considerable climate resilience. Their drought tolerance, heat resistance, and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen make them well-suited to withstand climate stress. Key quality parameters include moisture content, sugar composition, absence of adulterants, pesticide residues, and microbiological safety. Regulatory authorities such as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conduct assessments and enforce compliance with these criteria. For instance, honey is evaluated for HMF levels, diastase activity, and pollen count, while beeswax and propolis are tested for chemical contaminants.

Certification not only promotes sustainable and ethical beekeeping practices but also supports biodiversity conservation and traceable trade systems. Consumers benefit through guaranteed product safety and health advantages, while producers gain market credibility and economic incentives. However, small-scale beekeepers often face obstacles such as high certification costs and complex documentation. More than 20,000 kinds of ants, 3,000,000 species of beetles, 28,000 species of fish, and almost 20,000 species of orchids would be hard for the average person to believe.
Definitions
• The collection and interplay of genes, species, and ecological diversity in a specific location and time is known as biodiversity. Different genes, species, habitats, and their relative abundance are all included in the phrase biodiversity.
• The portion of nature known as biodiversity comprises the genetic variations between individuals of the same species as well as the variety and richness of all plant and animal species at various spatial dimensions, such as a region, a nation, and the entire planet.
• “The diversity of life, which encompasses ecosystem or community diversity, species diversity, and genetic diversity, and includes the entire range of variety and variability within and among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur,” is another definition for it.

The world is running out of clean water. The subsurface water table decreases and surface runoff rises as a result of deforestation. The amount of water stored underground is decreasing as wells are being dug deeper and deeper. As a result of desertification and deforestation, perennial rivers are turning seasonal. There is not enough potable drinking water because of abuse and overuse.
Conserving Water

Natural farming systems aim to reduce dependence on expensive commercial feeds by integrating locally available, non-conventional feed
resources and crop residues. These materials are not only cost-effective and environmentally friendly but also help bridge fodder shortages during lean seasons while recycling agricultural waste.
Non-conventional feeds encompass a wide array of agricultural byproducts, including oilseed cakes from neem, mahua, and karanja; legume
haulms; discarded fruits and vegetables; kitchen waste; and various agroindustrial residues. These resources are often rich in proteins, fibers, and minerals, and when used judiciously, can effectively supplement conventional fodder.
Crop residues such as wheat straw, paddy straw, maize stalks, sugarcane tops, and groundnut haulms are commonly used as dry roughage for ruminants in India. While these are generally low in protein, their fiber content is significant and can be enhanced through simple treatments like chopping, soaking, or fermenting with natural inputs such as Jeevamrit or urea to improve digestibility.
Integrating these alternative feed resources supports the principles of circular agriculture by reducing environmental waste, cutting down on feed expenses, and improving the sustainability of livestock systems. Nonetheless, appropriate care must be taken to avoid incorporating harmful or poorly digestible substances, and nutritional supplementation may be required to ensure optimal animal health.

Detecting pathogens in fish is a vital component of maintaining health in aquaculture systems, as it enables the early identification of diseases and supports swift, effective responses. Fish can be affected by a variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. To ensure that pathogen detection is both reliable and safe, it is critical to implement stringent biosafety measures and adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). These frameworks are designed to safeguard personnel, protect the surrounding environment, and produce dependable, repeatable diagnostic outcomes.
Good Laboratory Practices represent a set of globally accepted guidelines that promote the generation of consistent and trustworthy data. These practices are fundamental across various applications, from academic research to industrial diagnostics and regulatory processes. Biosafety, in the context of detecting fish pathogens, involves strategies to prevent accidental exposure to infectious agents. Laboratories conducting such work must operate at biosafety levels appropriate to the organisms being examined—typically BSL-1 or BSL-2, with BSL-3 reserved for highly virulent pathogens.
A key element of biosafety is the preliminary assessment of risk. Before starting any diagnostic or research activities, lab personnel must evaluate the nature of the pathogen, its transmission method, level of pathogenicity, and required containment procedures. This evaluation informs the use of protective measures, including gloves, lab coats, eye protection, and in specific cases, respiratory masks. The physical design of laboratories also contributes to biosafety. Proper infrastructure should include accessible handwashing stations, efficient ventilation systems, biosafety cabinets (Class II or above), and controlled entry to reduce the risk of exposure and contamination. Activities that may generate aerosols—such as homogenizing tissues or centrifuging samples—must be carried out within biosafety cabinets to maintain safety.

Bacterial culture methods are key to diagnosing and confirming bacterial infections in fish. These techniques involve the isolation and growth of bacterial pathogens from fish tissues or environmental sources under controlled lab conditions. The effectiveness of these methods depends greatly on accurate sample collection, careful handling, and the correct choice of culture media and incubation parameters.
Samples are aseptically collected from infected fish—typically targeting tissues such as the kidney, liver, spleen, gills, and any visible skin lesions. In live fish, sterile tools are used for tissue extraction, while in dead fish, internal organs should be harvested promptly after death to reduce contamination. For surface-level infections, swabs taken from mucus or skin lesions are also helpful. To maintain bacterial viability and minimize contamination, samples must be kept cool during transport.
In the laboratory, samples are inoculated onto culture media. The type of media used depends on the suspected pathogen. Common general-purpose media include Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), Nutrient Agar (NA), and Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHIA). For selective isolation, media such as MacConkey Agar (for Gramnegative bacteria), TCBS Agar (for Vibrio species), or Edwardsiella Isolation Medium are utilized. Enrichment broths like Alkaline Peptone Water or Buffered Peptone Water may be used to boost bacterial numbers before plating.
Incubation typically occurs at 25°C to 30°C, with most fish pathogens growing well in this range. Plates are monitored over 24 to 72 hours. Bacterial colonies are assessed for physical traits such as size, shape, color, and hemolysis patterns, particularly on blood agar.

Indian Major Carps (IMC)—namely Catla (Catla catla), Rohu (Labeo rohita), and Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala)—form the foundation of freshwater fish farming in India. These species contribute heavily to national fish production and are vital for supporting food security, rural livelihoods, and income generation. The nursery phase is a key transitional stage where hatchlings (spawn) are nurtured into fry in a controlled environment. Proper management during this stage is essential to ensure high survival rates, healthy growth, and the production of disease-free seed for stocking in grow-out ponds. Nursery rearing serves as a vital link between hatchery output and commercial fish farming. Adopting scientific nursery practices enhances the quality of fry, minimizes mortality, and boosts overall aquaculture efficiency. As India pushes for greater sustainable aquaculture yields, well-managed nursery systems play a central role in strengthening the fish seed supply chain.

Rearing post-larvae (PL) shrimp involves transitioning them from the larval stage to juveniles, typically done in specialized tanks or ponds. PL are stocked at densities of 75–100 per liter in indoor tanks, while outdoor tanks can accommodate higher densities. They are fed with live zooplankton, such as Artemia nauplii. Proper water quality, including dissolved oxygen and low ammonia, is crucial, with regular water changes and removal of waste. The tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, is one of the fastest growing species among cultured shrimps. The species is euryhaline and can even tolerate near freshwater conditions. In India, shrimp culture has been followed as a traditional activity since ages. However, it made a phenomenal growth during the 1990s due to the adoption of scientific practices. Farming of tiger shrimp is generally practiced in the tidal flats and other areas adjacent to the coastal waters. The steady demand in the global market and high economic return has attracted farmers to adopt tiger shrimp culture. India is endowed with a long coastline and hence offers scope for large exploitation of marine wealth. Till a few years back, fishermen in India were involving themselves in traditional marine fishing. In the seventies, fishermen started concentrating on catching prawns, more commonly known as ‘shrimps’, due to high profitable return on the same on account of their export value. Brackish water prawn farming started in a big way during 1991–94, especially in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The estimated brackish water area suitable for undertaking shrimp cultivation in India is around 11.91 lakh hectares, spread over 10 states and union territories— West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Of this, only around 1.2 lakh hectares are under shrimp farming now, and hence a lot of scope exists for entrepreneurs to venture into this field of activity.
