Amaranth crop stands in the group of pseudocereals and it is popular for its significant nutrient content as well as attractive inflorescence. The word Amaranthus came from a Greek word “Anthor” meaning eternal or unwilting. Amaranthus belongs to family of dicotyledonous plants Amaranthaceae and is one of the multipurpose rare plants whose leaves are consumed in the form 15 of vegetable while the grains are consumed as cereals. Amaranthus being an ancient crop has been included in the human diet since the pre-colonized South American civilizations.

Departure of waves ( P,Q,R,S, T), segments (P-R, S-T and T-P) and /or intervals (P-R, Q-T, R-R) from their normal values (configuration, morphology, amplitude and duration of wave; prolonging /shortening of intervals : elevation /depression of segments from their isoelectric line) is said to be abnormal feature of the electrocardiogram. 3.1. Brief description of the state

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum Linn.) is a remarkable tall, perennial grass characterized by its thick, jointed stalks and long linear leaves. This remarkable plant, known for its ability to efficiently photosynthesize in warm climates, is a C4 plant. The propagation of sugarcane primarily occurs through stem cuttings, as it seldom produces flowers and seeds. It finds roots in regions with tropical and subtropical climates featuring warm temperatures, abundant sunshine, and well-drained fertile soil (Shukla et al., 2017). Cultivated for its sweet juice, rich in sucrose, sugarcane serves as the primary raw material for the production of sugar, ethanol, and various other valuable products. Its lifecycle comprises several growth stages, including germination, tillering, grand growth, and maturation, culminating in the harvesting of its valuable juice. Continuous advancements in botany and genetics have contributed to the improvement of sugarcane cultivation, enhancing yield and resistance to pests and diseases. The origins and domestication of sugarcane can be traced back to Southeast Asia, particularly in regions encompassing Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and their vicinity. The domestication of sugarcane is believed to have commenced thousands of years ago when early human populations in these regions recognized the sweetness of the cane and began cultivating it for its edible properties. Over time, through selective breeding and propagation of plants with desirable traits, these early cultivators played a pivotal role in shaping the sugarcane we know today. This indigenous Southeast Asian plant spread to other parts of the world through trade and exploration. Historical records indicate that sugarcane found its way to India around 500 BC and reached China in the 6th century AD. Subsequently, it traversed the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, and eventually reached the Americas during the early voyages of exploration and colonization (Grivet et al., 2004). Christopher Columbus played a significant role in introducing sugarcane to the Caribbean islands during his second voyage in 1493, and from there, it made its way to other parts of the New World, including Brazil and various South American countries. The cultivation of sugarcane emerged as an essential industry in these regions, profoundly influencing their economic and social landscapes. The domestication and widespread cultivation of sugarcane have left an indelible mark on the global economy, trade, and human history. Abstract

Nitrate uptake from the soil is the first step in nitrate acquisition and utilization by plants. Nitrate uptake and its release into cells is mediated by nitrate transporter(s) located into the plasma membrane of the root. Three transporters have been identified by kinetic measurements in plant roots. These are constitutive high affinity nitrate transporter (cHATS), inducible high affinity nitrate transporter (iHATS) and low affinity nitrate transporter (LATS). Two of these display saturable kinetics; a low capacity constitutive system and a high capacity inducible system. In addition, a non-saturating low affinity, high capacity system becomes apparent only at higher external NO^-₃ concentration. Genes that encode representatives of each class of transport system have been identified and fall into two families: NRT1 and NRT2. Members of these families are induced in response to nitrate in the environment and are regulated by internal signals including nitrogen metabolites and shoot demand for nitrogen. This chapter deals with the physiology and molecular biology of nitrate transporters in higher plants.

15. 1 Introduction

Data collected in social sciences and economic study, are usually based on answers provided by the respondents. These answers are aften based on re-collection of past memories and often suffer from memory lapses, intentional erros etc. As such they provide only a crude informations which are never exact. The analysis of such data on the pattern of other biological data will not yield much information because many times they will not fulfil the underlying assumptions. For such data, the non-parametric (N.P.) methods are most appropriate.

The tests which deal with the parameters of the populations, are known as parametric test e.g. Z, t & F tests are the parametric tests.

Recognizing the importance and impact initiatives were taken for starting National Horticulture Mission, announced by Honorable Prime Minister on 15 August 2003. Crop diversification has become an imperative for India’s agri-economy. To address this need and to give further impetus to encouraging growth in cultivation of horticultures, vegetables, flowers, species etc. a National Horticultural Mission has been launched. Its main target will be doubling India;s horticultural production by 2010. Sub sequentially, National Horticuture Mission was launched during Tenth Plan with effect from 2005 2006 for holistic development of horticultural crops, having competitive advantages.

ABSTRACT

Indian farming community is facing a multitude of problems to maximize crop productivity. In spite of successful research on new agricultural practices concerning crop cultivation, the majority of farmers is not getting upper-bound yield due to several reasons. One of the reasons is that expert/scientific advice regarding crop cultivation is not reaching farming community in a timely manner. It is true that India possesses a valuable agricultural knowledge and expertise. However, a wide information gap exists between the research level and practice. Indian farmers need timely expert advice to make them more productive and competitive. In this paper, we made an effort to present a solution to bridge the information gap by exploiting advances in Information Technology (IT). We propose a framework of a cost-effective agricultural information dissemination system (AgrIDS) to disseminate expert agriculture knowledge to the farming community to improve the crop productivity. Some of the crucial benefits of AgrIDS are as follows. It is a scalable system which can be incrementally developed and extended to cover all the farmers (crops) of India in a cost effective manner. It enables the farmer to cultivate a crop with expertise, as that of an agricultural expert, by disseminating both crop and location specific expert advice in a personalized and timely manner. With AgrIDS, the lag period between research effort to practice can be reduced significantly. Finally, the proposed system assumes a great importance due to the trend of globalization, as it aims to provide expert advice which is crucial to for the Indian farmer to harvest different kinds of crop varieties based on the demand in the world market.

Though the treatment for arrhythmias has been recommended for even a single premature beat, in the current scenario the treatment is indicated when there are more than 17 VPCs per minute. In certain situations the side effects or proarrhythmic effects of drugs can lead to morbidity or mortality. As a result, new guidelines are proposed when evaluating the need for treatment of arrhythmias. Keeping the adverse effects of antiarrhythmic agents in mind, one should be selective about which arrhythmias are to be treated. The goal of antiarrhythmic therapy includes the treatment of an existing arrhythmia or prophylaxis for anticipated arrhythmias.

Organic farm produce is now gaining momentum in the world. People of high status and concerned with health hazards are interested in organic product. Since 1990, the market of organic product has grown reaching a value of Rs 55 billion in 2009 as per the Organic Monitor in the world. The demand has been reflected in increase of land under organic farming which has grown correspondingly at a rate of 8.9% per annum. At present there is approximately 37,000,000 hectare of land under organic farming worldwide. The idea has been percolated to rural areas and the farmers of all kinds are aware of organic farming. In terms of organic land, Australia leads the pack with 11.3 million hectares followed by Argentina (2.8 million hectares) and Italy with more than one million hectares. In Asia, China, India and Japan are the largest organic producers. Japan is the region’s largest market and buys majority of Asia’s production.

Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of every country. It largely depends on climate and its changes. Over the last few years climate change has affected crops, cropping systems, patterns and the ecosystem hugely. Climate change is caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which results in global warming (Aydinalp and Cresser, 2008). The rising temperature, melting of glaciers, loss in vegetation cover, frequent occurrences of drought and floods are some of the issues that have raised concern among the environmentalists. The change in temperature and precipitation patterns alters the traditional growing seasons. Climate change is expected to influence crop and livestock production, hydrologic balances, input supplies and other components of agricultural systems (Adams et. al., 1998). Vulnerability of climate change depends on physical, biological and socio-economic characteristics. Low income populations dependent on isolated agricultural systems are particularly vulnerable to hunger and severe hardship. These populations are already barely food-sufficient, even the slightest decline in yields could be very harmful in these areas. The most negative effects are foreseen in dry land areas at lower latitudes and in arid and semi-arid areas, especially for those reliant on rain fed, non-irrigated agriculture (Aydinalp and Cresser, 2008). The rise in temperature cause stress in crops and reduce yields and productivity. Crops that are sensitive to temperature during the growth stages are affected a lot. A shift in growing season is being seen due change in temperature. Irregular and altered patterns of rainfall are severely affecting the crops and water supplies for livestock, which in turn has increased the occurrence of floods and drought, causing soil erosion, disrupting harvesting schedules. Occurrence of new pests and diseases are seen in the places having warmer temperature. Altered temperature has altered the life cycle of pests and intensity of infestations. Rising of sea water level and increased evaporation leads to intrusion of salt water into fresh water making irrigation water more saline harmful to crops. Livestock are sensitive to heat stresses which in turn reduce livestock productivity and increase mortality rates.

This phenomenon, marked by its complexity, involves numerous factors that interact simultaneously and operate across different levels of functional organization. The diversity of ageing phenotypes among individuals of the same species and the disparities in longevity
among different species underscore the significant roles of both genetic and environmental influences in shaping the lifespan.At its core, ageing is an ontogenic journey—a process of growing old that encompasses all physiological, genetic, and molecular changes occurring from fertilization to death. The biology of ageing pertains to the progressive accumulation of random molecular defects within tissues and cells, leading to age-related functional impairments in tissues and organs. This relentless, deleterious, and intrinsic phenomenon was famously described by Medawar in 1952 as an “unsolved problem in biology.” Despite the enduring mystery of the ageing process, research has advanced significantly since Medawar’s time, expanding our understanding of this intricate biological conundrum.
Goldberger et al. (2002) define senescence as the progressive deterioration of bodily functions over time, noting that normal human ageing is associated with a loss of complexity in various physiological processes and anatomical structures. Although ageing and senescence are often used interchangeably, they encompass distinct concepts. Senescence refers to a post-maturational process that leads to diminished homeostasis and increased vulnerability to death, while ageing encompasses any time-related process that begins at conception and continues until death. The mechanisms driving ageing are partially intrinsic, influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors, and partially extrinsic, shaped by environmental factors such as nutrition, radiation, temperature, and stress. Genetic factors account for approximately 25% of the variance in human lifespan, with the remainder determined by nutritional and environmental influences. 

Packaging means a coordinated system of preparation of goods for distribution, storage, merchandizing and shipment at optimum cost compatible with the requirements of the product. It also includes the art, science and technique used, preparatory to and during transportations and selling of goods and technical methods and work processes related to the above preparations.

The broad range of dairy products necessitates that packaging equipment and materials encompass nearly all types from flexible to rigid and from high to low barrier. The general types of packaging and equipment are discussed below with a focus on fluid products but it must be recognized that other dairy products such as cheese have their own particular packaging requirements and technologies.

Role of packaging in distribution and sale: The essence of what makes milk and dairy products important source of human nutrition also causes rapid deterioration and high perishability. The major role of dairy packaging is to retard the deterioration by preventing microbial recontamination and excessive chemical deterioration. Fluid products are especially susceptible to microbial, enzymatic and chemical degradation. In addition to retarding quality loss, packaging must provide containment, facilitate use, identify products, communicate, and appeal to consumers, all with maximum production efficiency. The large volumes and low unit value means that these functions must be met with minimal economic cost and environmental impact. Because food packaging is generally highly regulated, legal requirements must also be understood and met.

Small size grains namely millets are produced by extraneous grasses and the word millet is derived from ‘‘mille’ a French word synonymous to thousand indicating handful of millet grains in a handful measure contains thousand grains (Taylor and Emmambux, 2008). Small millets and pseudo cereals belong to Gramineae family and were major ancient foods of Asian and African continents while Western countries used them as only bird feed.

9.1 Introduction

According to FAO guideline, “Conservation Agriculture (CA) is an approach to managing agricultural ecosystems for enhanced and sustained productivity, improved returns, and food security while preserving and enhancing the resource base and the environment.”

The terms “conservation agriculture” (CA) and “resource-conserving technologies” (RCTs) are not synonyms, but sometimes both words are used for a similar meaning. Therefore, the practices which improve resource or input-use efficiency are termed as RCTs. RCT is a wider term than CA which is used for nitrogen-efficient varieties; fuel-, money-, and time-efficient techniques; and improvement in plot-level water productivity including CA.

Introduction Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) belongs to the family Cruciferae or Brassicaceae having chromosome number 2n=18. ‘Cole wart,’ a wild non-heading variety of Brassica oleracea var. sylvestris, is the ancestor of cabbage. The majority of the 100 species that make up the genus Brassica are indigenous to the Mediterranean region. It is also believed that Germany is where the true-headed cabbage originated. Currently, mostly cabbage is grown in the country like Caribbean, Indonesia, Malaysia, Central Asia, and Western and Eastern America.The third-largest producer of cabbage worldwide is India. The majority of the nation’s states where it is grown include UP, Orissa, Bihar, Assam, WB, MH, and Karnataka. Annually in India, cabbage was produced around in the area of 418 thousand hectares and production of 9.72 million metric tons with the productivity of 22.7MT/hectares (NHB, 2021-22). The other main producers in the globe, in addition to India, are China, Russia, Japan, Korea, the USA, Indonesia, and Ukraine.

Ready to eat shami kebabs from goat meat with 25, 50 and 75 % levels of goat tripe were prepared and their quality evaluated. shami kebabs prepared with 100% goat were used as control. Significant (p<0.05) increase was observed for pH, diameter shrinkage, drip loss, protein and fat contents in goat tripe incorporated shami kebabs than control. However, significant (p< 0.05) reverse trends were observed for product yield and moisture content. Sensory evaluation scores for appearance and colour, flavor, tenderness, juiciness, binding and overall acceptability were highest for 25% goat tripe incorporated shami kebabs followed by 50% and 75% goat tripe incorporated shami kebabs. Physico - chemical and sensory evaluation scores of 25% goat tripe incorporated shami kebabs were comparable with control goat meat shami kebabs and the values did not differ significantly between them. Thus, it can be concluded that 75% goat meat and 25% goat tripe can be used for preparation of ready to eat goat meat shami kebabs without affecting quality and acceptability.

Anacardium occidentale is a medium-sized tree, spreading, and evergreen, much branched; grows to a height of 12 m. When grown on lateritic, gravelly, coastal sandy areas, it rarely exceeds 6 m and develops a spreading habit and globose shape with crown diameter to 12 m but, if grown inland on loams; it reaches 15 m tall and is much branched, with a smaller (4-6 m) crown diameter. The root system of a mature A. occidentale, when grown from the seed, consists of a very prominent taproot and a well developed and extensive network of lateral and sinker roots. Leaves simple, alternate, coriaceous, glabrous, obovate, rounded at ends, 10-18 x 8-15 cm, with short petiole, pale green or reddish when young and dark green at mature. Rai and Vatsala (1985) studied the dermal morphology and stomatal ontogeny of Spondias pinnata Kurz., Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr., Anacardium occidentale L., Holigarna arnottiana Hook. F. and Mangifera indica L. are studied. The cuticle is thick in H. arnottiana, A. occidentale and M. indica, but is thin in S. pinnata and L. coromandelica. Based on the shape of epidermal cells, the five species are categorised into three: cells in both upper and lower epidermis sinuous (A. occidentale, H. arnottiana, S. pinnata); upper sinuous and lower polygonal (M. indica) and upper polygonal and lower sinuous (L. coromandelica). Stomatal ontogeny aperigenous (L. coromandelica), paramesoperigenous (A. occidentale) and anisomesogenous (M. indica, H. arnottiana). S. pinnata is peculiar in that it possesses three different types of stomata, aperigenous, hemiparamesoperigenous and paramesoperigenous; whereas, in all the other four species, only one type of stomatal ontogenesis exists. Except S. pinnata, all the other species possess epidermal appendages. Unicellular trichomes occur in A. occidentale and H. arnottiana, and multicellular glandular trichomes in A. occidentale, M. indica and L. coromandelica. The multicellular hairs are found in A. occidentale in specialized pockets in two rows on either side of the major veins - a unique feature which is reported for the first time.
