In an era where climate variability and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, the importance of accurate and reliable weather forecasts cannot be overstated. Farmers rely heavily on weather forecasts to make critical decisions that impact their agricultural practices, from planting and harvesting to irrigation and pest management. However, the process of using weather forecasts is not as straightforward as it may seem.
6.1. The Multifaceted Nature of Decision-Making
Farmers operate within a complex web of factors that influence their decisionmaking processes. Some of these factors include:
• Economic Considerations: Market fluctuations, input costs, and profit margins all play a role in shaping a farmer’s decisions. Weather forecasts must be considered in the context of these economic factors to ensure that decisions are financially viable.
• Social and Cultural Factors: Local traditions, community norms, and personal values can influence a farmer’s choices. For example, some farmers may prioritize environmental sustainability over profit maximization.
• Environmental Concerns: Soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity are all critical considerations for farmers. Weather forecasts must be integrated with these environmental concerns to ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
• Technological Advancements: The increasing use of precision agriculture, drones, and other technologies is changing the way farmers’ access and utilize weather information.
6.2. Challenges in Interpreting and Applying Weather Forecasts
The intricacies of interpreting and applying weather forecast data pose significant challenges for farmers. Some of these challenges include:
• Forecast Reliability: The accuracy and reliability of weather forecasts can vary significantly, making it difficult for farmers to trust and act upon the information.

The world is at a critical juncture where the impacts of climate change are increasingly felt across various sectors, with agriculture being one of the most vulnerable. The agricultural sector, which is a cornerstone of many economies, especially in developing countries, faces unprecedented challenges due to rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. These climatic changes not only affect crop yields and quality but also have broader implications for food security, economic stability, and sustainable development. In this context, the development and dissemination of operational agroclimatological advisories ((OAA) have emerged as a vital strategy for mitigating the impacts of climate variability on agriculture.
5.1. The Imperative for Agroclimatological Advisories
Agroclimatological advisories are specialized services designed to provide farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders with timely and accurate information on optimal agricultural practices in response to prevailing and forecasted climatic conditions. These advisories are grounded in the integration of climatological data, agricultural research, and local knowledge, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity, reduce risks associated with climate variability, and promote sustainable agricultural practices (Fig. 5.1).
The relevance and necessity of these advisories are underscored by several critical factors:
• Climate Change Impacts: The agricultural sector is both a contributor to and a victim of climate change. Agroclimatological advisories can guide farmers in adopting practices that reduce the vulnerability of their crops to changing climatic conditions.
• Food Security: With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience is crucial for ensuring food security. Tailored advisories can help farmers make informed decisions that potentially increase yields and reduce losses.
• Economic Stability: Agriculture is a significant source of income and employment in many countries. By minimizing risks associated with climate variability, agroclimatological advisories can contribute to economic stability and poverty reduction.

As the world grapples with the complexities of climate change, one group of people has been on the front lines, witnessing firsthand the devastating impacts of rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased extreme weather events: farmers. For generations, farmers have been the stewards of the land, relying on their intimate knowledge of the natural world to coax crops from the earth and raise livestock. However, the changing climate is redefining the rules of their trade, forcing them to adapt to new and unpredictable conditions. The relationship between farmers and the climate is deeply intertwined. On one hand, farmers have always been attuned to the subtleties of the climate, carefully observing weather patterns, soil moisture levels, and pest populations to make informed decisions about planting, harvesting, and crop management. This traditional knowledge, passed down through generations, has allowed farmers to develop a keen sense of the local climate and its rhythms. On the other hand, farmers are also significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, with agricultural practices such as tillage, fertilization, and livestock production releasing carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. As the climate continues to change, farmers are finding themselves at the forefront of climate awareness. Rising temperatures are altering growing seasons, shifting the distribution of pests and diseases, and changing the patterns of rainfall and drought. This, in turn, affects crop yields, quality, and profitability, making it increasingly challenging for farmers to maintain their livelihoods. The consequences of climate change are far-reaching, from the immediate impacts on farm productivity to the long-term implications for food security, rural development, and ecosystem health. In this context, farmers are not just passive victims of climate change; they are also key players in the global effort to mitigate its effects. By adopting climateresilient agricultural practices, such as agroforestry, conservation tillage, and integrated pest management, farmers can reduce their carbon footprint, improve soil health, and promote biodiversity. Moreover, farmers can serve as powerful advocates for climate policy, using their unique perspective to inform decisionmaking at the local, national, and international levels. This chapter explores the complex relationships between farmers, climate awareness, and climate change. By examining the ways in which farmers are experiencing and responding to climate change, we can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. From the nuances of climatesmart agriculture to the role of farmers in shaping climate policy, this chapter

For farmers, the weather is a constant presence that influences every aspect of their work. It is a complex and multifaceted factor that can bring prosperity or devastation, often with little warning. The relationship between farmers and the weather is deeply intertwined, with each influencing the other in a delicate dance of observation, adaptation, and resilience. Weather affects farming in numerous ways, from the obvious to the subtle. Temperature, precipitation, and sunlight are the primary drivers of crop growth and development. However, extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and storms, can have catastrophic consequences for farmers. The timing and duration of these events can be particularly critical, with even small changes in weather patterns having significant impacts on crop yields and quality (Fig. 3.1).

• Crop growth and development: Temperature, precipitation, and sunlight influence the growth rate, yield, and quality of crops.

• Water management: Precipitation and irrigation patterns determine water availability, affecting crop growth and farm operations.
• Farm operations: Weather conditions influence the timing and feasibility of planting, harvesting, and other critical farm activities.

Operational agricultural meteorology is a specialized field that focuses on the practical application of meteorological knowledge and tools to support decision-making in agricultural systems. This discipline seeks to bridge the gap between meteorological research and agricultural practices, providing farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders with the information they to optimize crop yields, reduce losses due to adverse weather conditions, and promote sustainable agricultural development (Fig. 2.1). At its core, operational agricultural meteorology involves the collection, analysis, and dissemination of weather and climate data tailored to the specific needs of the agricultural sector. For instance, understanding the onset and duration of the monsoon season in regions like India is crucial for planning planting and harvesting schedules for crops such as rice, wheat, and soybeans. Similarly, in regions with Mediterranean climates, knowing the likelihood and timing of frost events can help farmers protect sensitive crops like citrus and avocados. The concepts and components of operational agricultural meteorology (OAM) are diverse and multifaceted, encompassing a range of topics. Agrometeorological modeling, for example, involves using computer simulations to predict how weather and climate conditions will impact crop growth and development. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) is a notable example of this, where multiple models are compared and improved to better predict the impacts of climate change on agricultural production. Crop weather modeling is another key component, focusing on the specific interactions between weather patterns and the growth stages of various crops.

Agriculture is the backbone of rural livelihoods in many developing countries, providing employment, income, and food security for millions of people. However, agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods are increasingly vulnerable to climate-related stresses, such as droughts, floods, and extreme temperatures. The impact of climate variability and change on agricultural systems is a major concern, particularly in rural areas where people have limited capacity to adapt to these changes.
1.1. The Role of Agricultural Meteorology
Agricultural meteorology plays a critical role in supporting sustainable rural livelihoods by providing weather and climate information to farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Operational agricultural meteorology involves the application of weather and climate information to improve agricultural decisionmaking, reduce climate-related risks, and enhance agricultural productivity. By integrating weather and climate information into agricultural decision-making, farmers can make informed decisions about planting, irrigation, pest management, and harvesting, ultimately leading to improved crop yields and reduced losses.
1.2. Objectives and Scope
This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of operational agricultural meteorology in supporting sustainable rural livelihoods. The book will explore the current state of agricultural meteorology, its applications, and its potential to improve agricultural productivity and reduce climate-related risks. The book will also discuss the challenges and opportunities in implementing operational agricultural meteorology, including the need for capacity building, infrastructure development, and policy support. This book is intended for a wide range of stakeholders, including:

1. Introduction
Organic polymers are large, chain-like molecules made up of repeating structural units (monomers) that are primarily carbon-based. These polymers are found both in nature and can be synthesized in labs, and they form the basis of many materials we use daily. Here are some main types of organic polymers (Harris, F. W., 1981).
2. Natural Organic Polymers
These are polymers found in nature. Examples include:
• Proteins: Polymers made up of amino acid monomers, serving as the building blocks for tissues and enzymes in organisms.
• Nucleic Acids: DNA and RNA, which are composed of nucleotide monomers, store genetic information in cells.
• Polysaccharides: Carbohydrate polymers like cellulose (found in plant cell walls), starch (energy storage in plants), and glycogen (energy storage in animals).
• Natural Rubber: Derived from latex in plants, primarily from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis).
3. Synthetic Organic Polymers
These are human-made polymers produced through chemical synthesis.
Common examples include:
• Polyethylene: A plastic used in bags and containers, made from ethylene monomers.
• Polystyrene: Used in packaging, insulation, and disposable cutlery, made from styrene monomers.
• Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): A durable polymer used in pipes, cables, and construction, made from vinyl chloride monomers.
• Nylon and Polyester: Common synthetic fi bers used in textiles.

Introduction 
Polymers are mostly distinguished from metals by their property of inability to conduct electricity. Because of the insulating properties, polymers find advantages for many applications of plastics. However with the discovery of poly sulphur nitride [(SN)x], which acts as super-conductor at low temperature the evolution of conducting polymers began in 1975. After two years the linear conjugated organic polymer polyacetylene treated with gaseous bromine or Iodine found to have metallic properties. Some examples of conducting polymers are polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene etc. Conducting polymers are organic polymer, possesses the magnetic, electronic, electrical properties, mechanical properties, and processibility etc. These properties are most commonly related to the conventional polymer. The transformation of polymer from insulator to conductor is called doping. For example: the effect of conductivity due to the absorption of I2 into polyacetylene is analogous to the effect of doping of arsenic, boron, and phosphorus into silicon to make semiconductor. Doping and undoping can be achieved in conducting polymers by an alternate route of electrochemical oxidation and reduction. Doping includes either the removal of electrons from or addition of electron to the conjugated backbone of conducting polymers. Doping is therefore of two types: Oxidative doping (p-type): In this case, the polymer backbone carries a positive charge due to removal of an electron by ordinary oxidation. Examples of p-doped conductive polymers are polyacetylene, polyaniline, polypyrroles etc. The p-doping causes oxidation of the polymer backbone to form cations. When these cations move along the polymer backbone in an electrical field, the polymer is electrically conductive. Reductive doping (n-type): the polymer backbone acquires negative charge by receiving electrons. Ex: Polyacetylene can be n-doped by alkali metals but these are less explored because they are very much sensitive towards atmospheric air than specific undoped type polymer. According to the principle of electroneutrality, doped conducting polymer needs counter ion to balance the opposite charges in the polymer backbone. These counterions are called dopant. Some common examples of dopants are usually small anions e.g. Cl-, I-, and SO4 2-. However poly-electrolyte like p-toluene sulphonic acid can act as the dopant. The process by which the doped polymer loses its charges and becomes an insulator is called undoping. For a doped conducting polymer with isolated small anions as dopants, undoping is accompanied by the loss of the dopant. Undoping causes the conductive polymer to lose its electrical conductivity and useful optical properties.

1. Introduction 
Among the innumerable gifts of nature, plants, animals and minerals have been the basis of treatment of human diseases. Generally it is either of prebiotic origin or originating from microbes, plants or animal sources. More likely they are the natural expression of the increase in complexity of organisms. Beside animals, plants are one of the most important sources of natural products. From the very beginning of their existence, man has acquainted himself with plants and used them in a variety of ways throughout the ages. In search of food and to cope successfully with human sufferings, ancient man began to distinguish those plants suitable for nutritional purposes from others with definitive therapeutic action. Some plants are widely used as food while others showed beneficial effects against various human sufferings such as injuries and diseases. This relationship has grown between plants and man, and many plants have come to be used as drugs. The use of plant as a drug can be divided broadly into five periods. The early period covers the Indian, Chinese, Sumerian, Egyptian and Assyrian civilizations followed by the Greco-Roman, Arabian, Medieval and modern periods (Buchnman, 1980). Among ancient civilisations, India has been known to be rich repository of medicinal plants as the forest in India is the principal repository of large number of medicinal and aromatic plants, which are largely collected as raw materials for manufacture of drugs and perfumery products. About 8,000 herbal remedies have been codified in Ayurveda. The Rigveda (5000 BC) has recorded 67 medicinal plants (Chopra et al., 1956), Yajurveda 81 species and Atharvaveda (4500-2500 BC) 290 species. Charak Samhita (700 BC) and Sushrut Samhita (200 BC) had described properties and uses of 1100 and 1270 species, respectively (Kirtikar & Basu, 1918; Baquar, 1989) in compounding of drugs and these are still used in the classical formulations, in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Before the availability of synthetic drugs, medicinal plants were used as the most primary source of medicine and continue to provide the mankind with new remedies for many diseases. These were used in crude forms like expressed juice, powder, decoction or infusion. As the plant have specialized biochemical capabilities they are able to synthesize and accumulate a vast array of primary and secondary chemical constituents or phytochemicals (Ghazanfar, 1994). Phytochemicals are responsible for metabolic activities and used for defense purpose. They are produced by specific biochemical pathways, which occur inside the plant cells. Due to their physical characteristic and chemical properties these chemical constituents are highly beneficial to the mankind and most importantly in primary health care. The first chemical substance isolated from plants was benzoic acid (Figure 1) discovered in 1560. The potent pain-killer, morphine (Figure 1) was separated from the dried latex of Papaver somniferum L. (opium) by F. W Serturner (1783-1814). The bioactive molecule, ephedrine (Figure 1) is one of the most potent plant based medicine and was isolated from Ephedra sinica (Ma huang). It was used in the form of various salts to combat bronchial asthma (Tang & Eisenbrand, 1992). Reserpine (Figure 1) an indole alkaloid, obtained from the roots of Indian plant, Rauwolfia serpentina, was used to treat hypertension. Taxol (Figure 1) is a diterpenoid first isolated from the stem bark of pacific Yew, Taxus brevifolia and used against ovarian for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

These diverse sources, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, produce a wide range of chemical structures and functions. The significance of natural products lies in their diverse biological activities and potential applications in therapeutics, agriculture, and various industries. Natural products have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and continue to serve as the foundation for many modern pharmaceuticals, providing templates for the development of synthetic analogues and novel drugs. Their complexity and unique structural features often translate into high biological activity, making them valuable in the discovery of new therapeutic agents. Furthermore, natural products are generally perceived as safer and more environmentally friendly compared to synthetic chemicals, contributing to their appeal in numerous applications.
1.2. Historical Perspective on the Use of Natural Products
The use of natural substances has a long history, with evidence of their application in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, India, and Greece. Traditional medical systems, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Indigenous practices, have utilized plants, animals, and minerals to treat various ailments. These early practices laid the foundation for the systematic investigation of natural products and their medicinal potential. One of the earliest documented uses of natural products in medicine is the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian text from around 1550 BCE (Packard, 1931). Similarly, ancient Indian texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita, describe the use of plant-based medicines in Ayurvedic tradition. The scientific investigation of natural products gained momentum in the 19th century, with the isolation of pure compounds, including morphine, quinine, and penicillin.
1.3. Current Trends and Applications
Natural products are invaluable in various industries, serving as a rich source of bioactive compounds for drug development, sustainable agriculture, and functional food products. Many modern medicines, such as the anticancer drug paclitaxel and the antimalarial artemisinin, are derived from natural sources. These naturally-derived compounds often possess unique structures and mechanisms of action that are difficult to replicate synthetically.

Introduction 
Before 1800, it was believed that organic compounds could only be synthesized by living organisms, not possible in the laboratory. Friedrich Wohler successfully synthesized the first organic compound urea in the laboratory. Recently, synthetic organic chemistry has been a well-established science to construct derivative or new compounds, which have been utilized in the fields of medicine, food, clothing, nutrition, polymers, plastic, highly durable materials, and high energy fuels, that are beneficial to humans, and society. To achieve faster organic transformations, many advancements have been made, as a result, catalysts have been taken into account, which provides an alternate faster path for the reaction by lowering the activation energy. The catalysts play a very crucial role in achieving organic transformations more efficiently, affordably, and with higher yields in less time. Additionally, the catalyst which is environment-friendly and easily recoverable after completion of the process, would be beneficial in both economic and ecological ways (Trost, 1991). The utilization of nanoparticles as catalysts in organic transformations is more advantageous over conventional catalysts because of lower catalyst loadings, and high performance of the reaction in heterogenous phase. The large surface area of nanoparticles is responsible for high reactivity towards organic transformations. Till now, many nano-dimension metals like gold (Au), silver (Ag), platinum (Pt), and palladium (Pd) efficiently utilized to catalyze organic transformations (Muskan et al., 2022). The ever-growing demand for productive and sustainable catalytic systems has driven the utilization of transition metal nanoparticles as catalysts in organic conversions (Pathak et al., 2024). Among these, copper-based nanoparticles have shown great potential as catalysts due to their large surface area and variable oxidation states, which enable them to function as both oxidizing and reducing agents, effectively replacing traditional palladium catalysts (Pathak et al., 2024). Copper-based nanoparticles having specific physicochemical properties, varying in size, porosity, surface/volume ratio, and shape can also be synthesized through different physical, chemical, and biogenic methodologies. Most physical and chemical methods are considered toxic, have huge energy demands, and have high-temperature demands. In contrast, biogenic methods are simple and non-toxic. The biogenic procedure can be done by using microbes, fungi, algae, plants, extracts, etc. This chapter provides insights into various aspects of the biogenic synthesis of copper-based nanoparticles using plants and multiple catalytic applications in recent organic transformations.

1. Introduction
Hydrogenation plays a vital role in the transformation of organic compounds, making it essential for synthesizing fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This process is widely utilized in both laboratories and for industrial applications (Andersson et al., 2008). Typically, two approaches are used for hydrogenation: traditional one involves direct hydrogenation using pressurized hydrogen gas, and the other relies on transfer hydrogenation (TH), which involves addition of hydrogen into a molecule from a non-H2 sources (Johnstone et al., 1985). The use of high-pressure hydrogen gas, however, demands significant investment in infrastructure, making it less economically feasible for developing a sustainable hydrogenation industry. In contrast, TH has gained increasing attention due to its sustainability, particularly when employing hydrogen donors derived from biomass, such as alcohols and organic acids, which are abundant, cost-effective, and easy to handle instead of using non-renewable H2 gas for reduction of CO2 (Becattini et al., 2021) (Figure 1).
2. Historical Background and Classification
The hydrogen transfer process has a rich history spanning over a century. In 1903, Knoevenagel first demonstrated that palladium black effectively promoted the disproportionation of dimethyl 1,4-dihydroterephthalate into dimethyl terephthalate and cis-hexahydroterephthalate, in which hydrogen transfer was occurred between identical molecules (identical donor and acceptor) (Knoevenagel et al., 1905). This pioneering work established the foundation for hydrogen transfer reactions. Braude and Linstead later categorized these reactions into three distinct types (Braude et al., 1954):

Schiff base ligands (also called azomethines) were first revealed by German chemist Hugo Schiff in 1864. They are synthesized through a straightforward condensation reaction between an amine and a carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone). This reaction forms a characteristic imine group (>C=N-) while eliminating a water molecule as a byproduct. Schiff bases are highly versatile and serve as ligands for various transition metals, forming complexes with applications in catalysis, material science, and medicinal chemistry. Their ease of synthesis, tunable structure, and ability to stabilize metal centers make them valuable in both academic research and industrial processes (Cozzi, 2004). They can form stable complexes with almost all metal ions, offering various coordination geometries. Their flexibility makes them valuable in catalysis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science, with wide applications across these fields. Schiff base metal complexes exhibit exceptional catalytic performance in various high-temperature reactions (>100 °C), even under humid conditions. These complexes are widely employed in catalytic processes, such as oxidation, reduction, carbon-carbon bond formation, polymerization, and asymmetric synthesis (Zoubi et al., 2016). Recently, interest in olefin polymerization has increased due to their ability to catalyze the formation of commercially significant branched and linear polyethylenes. Their versatility, structural tunability, and high stability make them ideal for such applications, offering pathways to develop advanced materials with tailored properties for industrial and commercial use. Schiff base complexes thus remain central to modern catalysis research. These complexes have shown great potential in producing polymers with tailored properties, making them highly valuable in industrial applications. Schiff base complexes have gained attention for their catalytic roles, particularly in the reduction of ketones to alcohols and the alkylation of allylic substrates. These complexes, typically coordinating with metal ions, facilitate crucial organic transformations by stabilizing intermediates, offering an efficient and selective route for various chemical reactions. Schiff base complexes enable controlled ring-opening polymerization of cycloalkenes at low temperatures, offering precise molecular weight regulation without side reactions. In contrast, traditional catalysts like tungsten, molybdenum, or ruthenium with alkylating agents require high temperatures and lack molecular weight control, making Schiff bases more efficient for polymerization. The oxidation of hydrocarbons catalyzed by Schiff base complexes has garnered significant academic and industrial interest. These metal complexes are studied for their ability to facilitate efficient and selective oxidation reactions, offering insight into their catalytic activity and potential applications in chemical processes and industrial oxidation technologies. The ring-opening of large cycloalkanes is challenging due to their stability, but Schiff base complexes of cobalt(II) and chromium(III) effectively catalyze these reactions. These complexes enhance metal center reactivity and stabilize intermediates, enabling efficient cleavage of cyclic structures and expanding possibilities for catalytic transformations in synthetic and industrial chemistry. These complexes not only facilitate the process but also exhibit important enantioselectivity, creating them valuable catalysts in asymmetric synthesis and fine chemical production. Chiral Schiff base complexes have emerged as versatile and efficient catalysts in various organic transformations, particularly in asymmetric synthesis. Schiff bases derived from salen and binaphthyl frameworks are effective in Michael addition reactions, offering high enantioselectivity and catalytic efficiency. While transition metal complexes

Palladium (Pd), which has the atomic number 46, was discovered in 1803 by the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston. It is a well-known transition metal recognized for its versatile catalytic properties in chemical reactions, material sciences, and various industries. The palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions extend beyond the formation of biaryls. Many carbon–carbon, carbon–nitrogen, and carbon–oxygen bond-forming reactions in organic chemistry are facilitated by palladium salts and catalytic systems derived from palladium. Some notable organic reactions that involve palladium include the Mizoroki-Heck reaction, (Biffis et al., 2018, Koranne et al., 2023, Lee et al., 2021) Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, (Zhang et al., 2023) Negishi reaction, (Haas et al., 2016). Stille coupling, (Cordovilla et al., 2015). Sonogashira coupling, (Chinchilla & Najera, 2007) Tsuji-Trost reactions, (Kvasovs et al., 2023). and Wacker catalytic processes. (Zhang et al., 2023) In this chapter, we will focus on the applications of palladium and its salts in C-N bond-forming reactions.
2. Palladium (Pd)-Catalyzed C–N Bond Formation
Besides copper, palladium metal is considered as the most widely used metal in organic synthesis. The discovery of cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by palladium(0) complexes in the 1970s was a highly important achievement that substantially changed the strategy of organic chemistry. Best applications of the palladium salts are in enantiolective and new C-N bond forming reactions. Stephen L. Buchwald and John F. Hartwig opened up the catalytic scope of palladium in newer methodologies on C–N bond forming reactions during 1990s, (Ruiz- Castillo & Buchwald, 2016) and henceforth, new methodologies of carbocycles, heterocycles, and simple organic compounds have been created in large scales (Rayadurgam et al., 2021). The mechanisms of palladium-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling reactions are critically discussed in numerous high-quality research journals with different theoretical and experimentally proven methods (Beletskaya & Averin, 2021). However, the most acceptable mechanistic pathway to reaction products in these Pd-catalyzed reactions involving palladium is illustrated in Scheme 1. The process begins with the formation of a palladium complex through the reaction of an aryl halide (which can be aliphatic, heteroaryl, or functionalized alkenes/alkynes), a palladium salt, and amino nucleophiles. In the presence of a suitable base, the loosely bonded halide or any leaving groups are eliminated, leading to the formation of a palladium (IV) complex. This complex then undergoes reductive elimination, resulting in stable aminated aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, or functionalized alkenes/ alkynes. Additionally, a more generalized reaction mechanism is presented in a circular pathway format, highlighting the bonding approaches, rearrangements, intermediate formations, and the final release of target compounds, as depicted in Scheme 1. The involvement of higher valence organo-palladium complexes in such catalytic transformations have been well established (Hickman & Sanford, 2012).

1. Introduction
With commercial uses ranging from the production of high-quality substances to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, hydrogenation is an essential step in the formation of organic compounds (Cerveny et al., 1986). There are two main approaches to hydrogenation: direct hydrogenation, which employs pressurized hydrogen gas, and transfer hydrogenation (TH). A versatile and effective approach for producing a large variety of hydrogenated molecules, the TH method entails adding H2 to molecules via an origin other than H2 gas. This approach is increasingly preferred over direct hydrogenation and has recently attracted considerable interest in hydrogenation research. The benefits of the TH method include (i) the elimination of potentially dangerous pressurized hydrogen gas and the complexity of experimental setups, (ii) the accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use of hydrogen donors, (iii) the potential to recycle the main byproduct, and (iv) the availability and stability of the catalysts employed (Brieger et al., 1974).
1.1. The Historical Context, Core Principles, and Groundbreaking Research on TH (transfer hydrogenation)
With a history spanning more than a century, the TH reaction has a rich past. In order to enable hydrogen transfer between equivalent donor and acceptor units, Knoevenagel showed in 1903 that palladium black could efficiently aid in the disproportionation of dimethyl 1,4-dihydro terephthalate into dimethyl terephthalate and cis-hexahydroterephthalate. Three primary types of hydrogen transfer reactions were distinguished by Braude and Linstead: (i) the hydrogen movement within a single molecule; (ii) hydrogen disproportionation, which entails transfer among identical donor and acceptor units; and (iii) TH-dehydrogenation, which takes place between distinct donor and acceptor units. Of them, THdehydrogenation— often just called TH—is the most well-known and often applied sector. Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reductions, early transition metal-catalyzed reactions, organocatalytic processes, enzyme-catalyzed reactions, heat techniques, and base-catalyzed reactions are among the types of TH reactions that are classified according to the type of catalyst used. The historical context, important research, and underlying ideas of each category will be covered in detail in this section.In 1925, Meerwein et al. independently reported the significant MPV reduction, which were the first TH process involving carbonyl groups. After earning his Ph.D. under Richard Anschütz in Bonn, where he was appointed a professor in 1914, Hans Meerwein (1879–1965) moved to Königsberg in 1922 and then to Marburg. His name is associated with a number of processes and reagents,

Metal-catalyzed C–N cross-coupling reactions are powerful synthetic methods for producing both simple and complex organic compounds, including natural products. These methodologies typically involve shorter reaction times and can achieve good to excellent yields with a broad range of reactions, exhibiting high regioselectivity in certain cases. The coupling of carbon and nitrogen to create organic compounds that contain nitrogen, such as urea and amides, is one of the most fundamental chemical reactions and plays a crucial role in human civilization. C–N coupling reactions have significant importance in industry, starting with the production of ammonia (NH3) through the Haber–Bosch process. Molecules containing C–N bonds are prevalent in a variety of organic materials, natural products, pharmaceutical compounds, and agricultural chemicals. This wide applicability makes them crucial chemicals, leading synthetic organic chemists to continuously seek out novel synthetic methods. In recent years, numerous synthetic strategies involving either transition metals or metal-free enzymes and biocatalysts have emerged. Additionally, new technologies, such as electroreduction, have been employed in these C–N coupling processes (Bariwal & Van der Eycken, 2013, Li et al., 2022, Yin et al., 2024, Rahman et al., 2022).
Common copper salts/complexes, and diamino ligands
Copper is commonly found coordinated by two, three, or four ligands, resulting in linear, trigonal planar, or tetrahedral geometries. Well-known and inexpensive copper halides, such as copper (II) glycinate, copper (II) acetylacetonate (particularly CuI), copper acetates, copper oxide, copper sulfate, and copper triflate salts, are widely used as catalytic systems in C–N bond-forming reactions. Additionally, other complexes such as Cu di-isopropyl salicylate (CuDIPS), copper phthalocyanine, and copper aspirinates have also been employed in these reactions. Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions are well-established methods for forming triazoles via C–N bonds in one pot. These reactions often involve domino click chemistry and green approach methodologies, leading to the synthesis of biologically important triazoles. Copper salts in combination with diamine ligands are widely used in C–N bond-forming reactions through cross-coupling strategies. Some notable examples of such diamino compounds that can coordinate with copper are illustrated in Figure 1.

Introduction 
Over the past few decades, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been showing great importance in the field of organic synthetic reactions, catalysis, sensors, biomedicines, environment rehabilitation, etc. (Gawande, M. B. et al., 2013; Del Rio, M. et al., 2022). Numerous research teams have recognized the significance of solid support materials for the creation of environmentally acceptable nano catalysts with high catalytic activity in light of the infinite advantages of MNPs (Sharma, R. K. et al., 2016; Gawande, M. B. et al., 2013; Deng, J. et al., 2011; Nasrollahzadeh, M. et al., 2015; Hudson, R. et al., 2014; Payra, S. et al., 2017; Chng, L. L. et al., 2013; Parandhaman, T. et al., 2017; Zhang, F. et al., 2014; Pourjavadi, A. et al., 2012). Heterogeneous catalysts in organic chemistry are solid catalysts that, while remaining in a distinct phase (usually solid) from the reactants (generally liquids or gasses), promote chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. These catalysts, which have multiple benefits such as ease of separation, recyclability, and selective reactivity, are essential in a variety of industrial processes and laboratory reactions (Lattuada, M. et al., 2007; Jiang, K. et al., 2011). The standard formula for ferrite nanoparticles is MFe2O4, where M is usually divalent metal ion like copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), or nickel (Ni), and iron (Fe) is the common metal (Kazemi, M. et al., 2018). These nanoparticles work very well as heterogeneous catalysts in a variety of chemical reactions because of their special magnetic and electrical characteristics.Because of its special qualities as a catalyst in a variety of processes, copper ferrite (CuFeO4), a mixed-metal oxide, has drawn interest in organic chemistry (Kharisov, B. I. et al., 2019; Zhu, J. et al., 2014; Vannucci, A. K. et al., 2012). It is a spinel-type ferrite that can catalyse a variety of organic transformations because it combines iron and copper in a stable, highly active structure. With benefits including high stability, reusability, and low toxicity, these catalysts are frequently employed in processes like oxidation, coupling, and reduction (Taghavi Fardood, S. et al., 2018). The Figure 1 represents schematic diagram of a reaction where the ferrite nanoparticles as catalyst have been recovered with the aid of an external magnet after the formation of reaction product.

Introduction 
Natural product scaffolds and heterocyclic ring-based organic compounds are crucial for developing bioactive substances and therapeutic drugs, serving as essential structural units for bioactive molecules and pharmacophores. Numerous experts have worked hard to design and develop organic synthesis, which could make it easier to obtain these crucial organic chemicals. Due to the multistep reactions involving several hazardous chemicals, conventional organic synthesis is neither commercially feasible nor environmentally benign. To overcome these issues, improvisation or developing a new synthetic approach with a superior atom and step economic procedure is always desirable. The biggest challenge in organic synthesis is functionalizing a carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond in a molecule. This is generally achieved through radical intermediates and catalysis by enzymes or transition metals. The transition metal-catalyzed process is the most popular due to its high chemoselectivity, site-selectivity, and efficiency (Yamaguchi et al., 2012). Inert C-H bonds can be directly functionalized, offering appealing synthetic strategies that enhance both atom and step economy and provide an overall efficiency of multistep synthetic sequences, leading to a sustainable and greener approach. These optimizations provide atom and step-economical methods for synthesizing structurally complicated organic molecules with broad substrate scope and good to exceptional product yields (Ackermann, 2011; Gensch et al., 2016). Direct conversion from the substrate to the desired organic compound without pre-functionalization is attractive and cost-effective. However, it can be quite challenging to selectively functionalize particular C-H bonds due to the inertness of those C-H bonds having similar electronic and bonding properties and the ubiquity of C-H bonds in organic molecules (Sambiagio et al., 2018). Two main techniques have been explored to obtain selectivity in C-H bond functionalization (Brückl et al., 2012). The first is based only on the natural reactivity pattern of an organic molecule. This strategy is highly successful for some heterocycles with at least one specific reactive site due to the presence of heteroatoms. However, it produces inadequate selectivity for most aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The latter is to direct further functionalization at a particular site using directing groups already present in the molecule (Kuhl et al., 2012). The development of directing groups that effectively control the regioselectivity of C-H functionalization has lately transformed this field, enabling the incorporation of desired groups in unfunctionalized sites (Docherty et al., 2023; Labinger & Bercaw, 2002). Employing directing groups, various functional groups are added to a molecule using this method. Directing groups are crucial for breaking a C-H bond in a transition metal catalysis reaction, where the metal center in the active catalyst complex is usually coordinated with the substrate through a weak interaction with the nearby C-H bond. This interaction is typically not selective; thus, the metal centre may activate numerous C-H bonds on the substrate. However, when a directing group is incorporated into a substrate, the metal center can interact more strongly and regioselectively with a specific region on the substrate as directed by the directing group. This causes selective cleavage

The integration of advanced technologies with traditional agronomic practices has led to the development of data-driven systems that not only forecast weather with greater accuracy but also optimize crop management, resource utilization, and risk mitigation. As we look toward the future, the convergence of these disciplines promises to usher in a new era of resilient, efficient, and environmentally conscious food production systems. We begin by outlining the current landscape and identifying key trends that are driving change. The discussion then transitions into an exploration of cuttingedge innovations in AI, IoT, and data integration that are revolutionizing weather intelligence. Subsequent sections address the policy frameworks and ethical dilemmas accompanying rapid technological adoption in agriculture, before concluding with a vision for future research directions and strategic planning. Finally, the chapter suggests additional topics—such as blockchain for supply chain transparency and urban vertical farming—to ensure a holistic view of sustainable food production in a rapidly changing world.
12.1 Emerging Trends in Weather Intelligence and Food Production
Over the past decade, advancements in sensor technologies, communication networks, and computational algorithms have revolutionized weather forecasting and climate monitoring. These breakthroughs are not only critical for predicting weather events but also serve as the foundation for proactive decision-making in agricultural management. High-resolution satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques now provide granular data about atmospheric conditions, soil moisture levels, and crop health (Fig.12.1).

Early Warning Systems (EWS) have evolved from simple, rudimentary alert mechanisms into complex, multi-hazard, data-driven networks that play a critical role in disaster risk management and climate adaptation. In today’s rapidly changing climate, timely and accurate information is essential not only for saving lives but also for protecting livelihoods, reducing economic losses, and enhancing community resilience. The application of EWS varies significantly by region, geography, type of disaster, and across diverse sectors such as agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and allied sciences. Global initiatives - led by organizations such as the United Nations - aim to ensure that every person, particularly the most vulnerable, is equipped with lifesaving early warnings by 2027 (Fig.11.1). Complementary partnerships, such as that between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), further strengthen these systems by integrating cutting edge forecasting with actionable advisories for critical sectors. A particularly groundbreaking effort is the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative, launched in 2022 by UN Secretary General António Guterres, which seeks to provide comprehensive early warning coverage for hazardous weather, water, and climate events to every person on Earth. Underpinning these global efforts is Weather Intelligence - a transformative approach that harnesses advanced data analytics, real time monitoring, and machine learning techniques to refine forecasts and deliver precise, context specific alerts. By integrating diverse data streams and tailoring

In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and an ever-changing climate, the need for precise, adaptive, and actionable weather intelligence has never been greater. As global weather patterns become more erratic and extreme events increasingly disrupt lives and livelihoods, the integration of real-time field response into weather intelligence systems represents a transformative opportunity. Just as companies like Google and Tesla leverage real-time user inputs to continuously update their software, refine artificial intelligence (AI) models, and provide timely road-and-traffic guidance, weather intelligence systems that are continuously refined by feedback from farmers, fishermen, and other local stakeholders offer the promise of dynamic, “live” insights that can revolutionize agricultural practices and community resilience (Fig.10.1). This chapter delves into the critical importance of collecting and synthesizing feedback from those who are on the frontlines of weather impacts. It explores the methodologies and benefits of integrating real-time field data into weather intelligence systems, drawing parallels to the iterative processes observed in hightech industries. In doing so, we highlight how these innovations can maximize

The content presented in this chapter is exploratory and reflects emerging trends in integrating weather intelligence with decision support systems. The term “weather intelligence” is introduced as a framework, with ongoing research expected to further refine and expand upon these ideas as technologies evolve. In an era where climate variability and extreme weather events increasingly threaten global food systems, the integration of advanced decision support systems (DSS) with what we are now calling weather intelligence has emerged as a transformative paradigm. This chapter explores how food production— encompassing agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry—can harness integrated weather intelligence to inform real-time crisis management, strategic planning, and risk mitigation. The discussion is exploratory in many respects, as the concept of weather intelligence represents an innovative framework that challenges traditional forecasting methods and decision support tools (Fig. 9.1). Drawing on multidisciplinary research and practical case studies, we examine the building blocks of decision support systems tailored to food production. We then discuss the integration of weather intelligence into crisis response and strategic planning, highlighting both established risk mitigation approaches and emerging tools designed to anticipate and respond to extreme weather events. By contextualizing these developments within the broader scope of sustainable food production, this chapter offers an in-depth analysis and a forward-looking vision for decision support and response management in a rapidly changing climate.

Remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as critical tools in modern agriculture and weather intelligence. Their integration has revolutionized how we monitor, analyze, and manage not only food production but also urban development, natural resource conservation, and climate adaptation. In this chapter, we explore the fundamentals of remote sensing, the use of diverse sensing technologies (including satellite imagery, radar, LiDAR, and thermal imaging), and the incorporation of advanced data analytics and machine learning. We also examine GIS integration for spatial analysis and mapping, discuss emerging technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and address economic, ethical, and policy considerations. Real-world case studies illustrate the practical applications of these technologies, while discussions on future directions highlight opportunities for continued innovation. Food production systems and its management today face unprecedented challenges—from climate variability and resource scarcity to urban expansion and shifting ecosystems. To address these challenges, modern strategies increasingly depend on synthesizing high-resolution environmental data with advanced spatial analysis. Remote sensing technologies provide a bird’s-eye view of vast landscapes, while GIS platforms enable efficient management and interpretation of these datasets. The integration of these technologies supports a host of applications, including real-time monitoring of weather phenomena, predictive modeling of environmental impacts, and strategic planning for sustainable development. With emerging trends such as drone-based monitoring, IoT sensor networks, and AIdriven analytics, the potential for remote sensing and GIS to transform weather intelligence and environmental management is growing exponentially. This chapter provides both the technical foundation and applied perspectives necessary to understand and leverage these powerful tools.

These forecasts enable proactive adjustments to critical operations—such as irrigation scheduling, planting, and harvesting, thereby mitigating weather-induced risks and enhancing productivity. Moreover, it is increasingly evident that weather patterns are not only shaped by natural phenomena but also by human-induced risks such as wars, conflicts, and environmental abuse. Factors like landfills, water and sea pollution, toxic dumping, and unsustainable industrial practices are altering microclimates around the world. This complex interplay of natural and anthropogenic forces calls for the incorporation of a broader array of variables and larger datasets into forecasting systems. In this context, embracing Weather Intelligence as a dedicated field of study and application in agricultural and allied sciences becomes not only desirable but essential. This chapter aims to detail the evolution and current state of these integrated approaches, discuss their potential applications across various agricultural sectors, and outline strategies for precision decision making. While much of the content is exploratory in nature, it provides a conceptual framework for future research

Agriculture has long served as the backbone of human civilization, enabling societies to grow and prosper. For generations, farmers have relied on experience, traditional practices, and historical weather data to inform decisions about crop cultivation and livestock management. Yet these conventional methods often left operations vulnerable to unpredictable environmental conditions. Today, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming agriculture by shifting the approach from reactive management to proactive, data-driven decision making. Modern IoT systems deploy a network of interconnected sensors that continuously capture critical environmental parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, light intensity, and nutrient levels. These sensors provide granular, real-time data that is transmitted to centralized analytics platforms where it can be processed and visualized. The resulting insights empower farmers, aquaculturists, and animal husbandry professionals to optimize every aspect of their operations — enhancing yields, reducing waste, and increasing sustainability. This chapter explores the deployment and impact of IoT in agricultural and allied systems. It provides detailed technical discussions on sensor networks, communication protocols, and power management; illustrates how real-time data integration with advanced analytics transforms decision making; and presents in-depth case studies from initiatives such as John Deere’s precision agriculture systems, Microsoft FarmBeats, and regional projects like SmartAgriHubs. Moreover, the chapter delves into the formidable challenges of IoT deployment, including those faced by underdeveloped regions—and concludes with a look at emerging trends and a synthesis of the future vision for agriculture.
6.1 The Role of IoT in Modern Agriculture
6.1.1 Revolutionizing Data Collection
The most significant impact of IoT in agriculture is its transformation of data collection. Traditional methods relied on periodic field observations, manual sampling, and regional weather reports that provided only a snapshot of environmental conditions. In contrast, IoT devices continuously monitor the microclimate across a farm. With sensors distributed throughout fields, livestock facilities, and aquaculture systems, farmers can now capture real-time data on temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light intensity, and more (Fig.6.1).

This chapter integrates case studies, scientific examples, and policy perspectives to illustrate how AI and ML can transform agricultural weather intelligence. The discussion spans from advanced predictive models in developed nations to emerging applications in technology-limited regions, while also addressing the urgent need for resilient crisis management systems in the face of natural and human-caused conditions. Advanced scientific techniques can not only optimize food production and resource management but also play a critical role in recovery efforts during times of crisis. Agriculture is intrinsically linked to the natural world—a domain defined by fluctuating weather patterns, seasonal shifts, and unpredictable environmental factors. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are revolutionizing how we analyze and predict weather patterns, and their applications in agriculture are far-reaching (Fig. 5.1). From forecasting crop yields and fishery conditions to managing plantations and monitoring livestock health, these technologies are creating a paradigm shift in agricultural weather intelligence. Scientific organizations worldwide are leveraging AI and ML to refine predictive models, enable multi-variate analysis, and provide advanced warning systems for extreme events such as droughts, tsunamis, earthquakes, and even crises caused by human-made conflicts. Emerging nations with rapidly growing technological capabilities stand to benefit immensely from these innovations, tailoring solutions to local challenges while contributing to global food security and crisis resilience.

Agriculture has long been intertwined with weather, where accurate forecasts are essential for planning everything from planting schedules to irrigation management, harvesting, and market timing. Over the decades, statistical methods have evolved from simple empirical models to sophisticated tools that integrate vast amounts of historical data, real-time observations, and remote sensing information (Fig. 4.1).
This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the statistical techniques that underpin modern agricultural forecasting. In doing so, it examines their applications across various agricultural domains—including staple crops, fisheries, livestock, and horticulture/plantation systems—while also addressing the challenges and uncertainties inherent in weather prediction. Furthermore, the chapter discusses how the rise of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping traditional approaches, particularly in the context of food production and agricultural resilience.
In the following sections, we explore
• Statistical Techniques: An overview of regression models, time-series analysis, and probabilistic methods used in weather forecasting.
• Applications in Agriculture: Tailoring forecasting models for crops, fisheries, livestock, and horticultural/plantation systems.

Agriculture has long been at the mercy of the weather, and in today’s datadriven world, harnessing meteorological information is more critical than ever. Weather intelligence—the process of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating weather data—supports decision-making in diverse fields such as aviation, transportation, emergency management, and especially agriculture (Fig 3.1). This chapter explores how advanced data acquisition methods and robust database management techniques underpin agricultural weather intelligence. It covers the variety of data sources available, details strategies for integrating and ensuring the quality of vast datasets, and examines the forecasting techniques that transform raw data into actionable insights for precision forecasting and decision making in food production. Weather Data Acquisition System In this chapter, we not only discuss the technological means by which weather data is collected—from satellites, ground sensors, and IoT networks—but also dive into the structure of weather databases. These repositories house surface weather observations, radar and satellite imagery, upper air measurements, and outputs from weather models. Further, we outline the different forecast types and forecasting methodologies that are essential to interpreting this data, ranging from nowcasting for immediate weather conditions to seasonal forecasting that supports long-term planning. Finally, the role of big data analytics in supporting precision forecasting and optimizing decision-making in agricultural production is examined, highlighting the integration of advanced techniques like numerical

Meteorology is not merely the study of weather patterns; it is a critical science that intersects agriculture and allied sectors in numerous ways. In a world where food security is intimately tied to climatic variability, understanding the basic principles of meteorology is essential for both traditional farming practices and modern integrated food production systems. This chapter explores the foundational concepts of weather and climate, examines the atmospheric dynamics that directly impact agricultural systems, and contrasts historical meteorological practices with modern forecasting approaches. Weather describes the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. It is the sum of short-term atmospheric conditions such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility. In contrast, climate refers to the long-term average of weather patterns over a period of decades or more. Understanding this distinction is crucial for agriculture, as farmers and allied sector professionals must respond to immediate weather events (such as sudden frost or heavy rainfall) while also adapting to long-term climatic trends (like gradual temperature increases or shifting precipitation patterns).

In today’s rapidly evolving world, food production is at the confluence of tradition and innovation. While age-old farming practices have sustained civilizations for millennia, the modern era demands an unprecedented level of precision and foresight. Weather intelligence—the practice of integrating detailed meteorological data with advanced analytics and decision support systems— is revolutionizing food production, from agriculture and fisheries to animal husbandry (Fig. 1.1). This chapter lays the foundation for understanding how accurate and timely weather data underpins food security, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. It further highlights global themes addressing the growing demand for food in any nation with a burgeoning population, the challenges of climate change, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. This introduction also outlines the objectives and structure of this book, which aims to empower decision makers with the knowledge needed to navigate a world where climate and food production are inextricably linked.

Enabled by policy reforms, technological innovation, and infrastructural development, digital governance has become a cornerstone of the country’s public service delivery, transparency, and accountability. However, the ambitious expansion of digital governance has also encountered systemic and structural challenges that continue to hinder its full realisation. These challenges are not merely technological but are deeply embedded in socio-political, administrative, and economic contexts that define the Indian public administration landscape. While the progress has been notable, the sustainability and inclusiveness of digital governance remain contingent on the country’s ability to address these entrenched constraints. Despite substantial advances, several persistent challenges threaten the transformative potential of digital governance in India. Chief among them is the digital divide across rural-urban, gender, economic, and social lines, which inhibits equitable access to digital services. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), internet usage in rural areas remains alarmingly low, with only 33% of women and 57% of men reporting regular access. Infrastructural constraints, human resource limitations, weak system interoperability, cyber-security threats, and concerns about data protection and digital rights compound these disparities. The post-2015 period has witnessed transformative initiatives under the Digital India Programme, including the proliferation of platforms such as Aadhaar, DigiLocker, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and MyGov, among others (MeitY, 2022). While these developments have significantly enhanced service accessibility and administrative efficiency, they have simultaneously revealed critical gaps in digital infrastructure, policy coherence, data governance, and institutional capacities. With over 34% of the population residing in urban areas as of 2018 and projections indicating that nearly half the nation will be urban by 2047, the quality of urban governance will decisively shape India’s developmental trajectory (United Nations, 2018). Urban areas are expected to contribute over 70% of the GDP by 2030. However, cities face multifaceted governance challenges ranging from infrastructure deficits and environmental stress to inadequate service delivery and institutional fragmentation (NITI Aayog, 2021). In response, digital urban governance has emerged as a transformative paradigm, leveraging information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enable responsive, efficient, and inclusive urban administration. Digital technologies are increasingly embedded into urban governance structures and processes, from e-governance portals and grievance redressal apps to real-time traffic monitoring systems and digital financial tools. This shift is reflected in flagship national programmes such as Digital India, Smart Cities Mission, and the National Urban Digital Mission (NUDM), which aim to digitise public service delivery, enhance citizen engagement, and enable data-driven decision-making at scale (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs [MoHUA], 2021; MeitY, 2015). At the heart of this transformation is the creation of robust digital infrastructure such as Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs), city data platforms, and open APIs combined with evolving institutional frameworks that promote interoperability, decentralisation, and cooperative federalism (Kapur & Joshi, 2021; NIUA, 2023). The chapter explores the evolution and current landscape of digital urban governance in India by first outlining the conceptual underpinnings of urban governance and then transitioning into the digital domain. It analyses the role of urban digital infrastructure and the institutional architecture that supports it, highlighting the coordinated efforts under NUDM to build an open, interoperable, and citizen-centric digital ecosystem across India’s 4,400+ towns and cities (MoHUA & MeitY, 2021). Rural digital governance refers to the strategic use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance service delivery, improve livelihoods, and foster participatory development in rural areas. It encompasses various applications from digital health, education, and financial inclusion to precision agriculture, market linkages, and entrepreneurial enablement, each designed to address long-standing structural inequities. Historically, rural regions have been perceived as passive recipients of policy support and welfare interventions. However, with the advent of digital technologies, these areas are increasingly positioned to become both demand drivers through rising incomes and service consumption and supply hubs, contributing to national productivity through digitally enabled livelihoods and enterprises. By enhancing access to essential services, improving the efficiency of traditional sectors such as agriculture and handicrafts, and facilitating diversification into non-farm activities like rural tourism and agri-processing, digital governance catalyzes rural transformation. However, the success of rural digital governance is contingent upon adopting a holistic and contextualized approach. One-size-fits-all digital interventions often fail to address the nuanced realities of rural economies. Effective rural technology deployment requires carefully diagnosing local needs, infrastructural capabilities, and livelihood profiles. In this regard, a participatory approach to technology selection and design grounded in the realities of rural life ensures greater relevance, uptake, and impact. Publicprivate partnerships (PPPs) play a pivotal role in scaling such initiatives, with governments providing scale and legitimacy while private actors contribute innovation, technical know-how, and financial investment.

India’s digital transformation over the past decade has emerged as a defining feature of its governance and developmental strategy, propelled by the ambitious Digital India initiative launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). With a vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, the initiative seeks to harness the power of information and communication technologies (ICT) to make governance inclusive, efficient, transparent, and responsive. Digital India marks a paradigm shift in how public administration operates, embedding technology at the core of policy delivery, citizen engagement, and institutional coordination across sectors and tiers of government. Creating a robust and scalable digital infrastructure is at the heart of this transformation. Major projects like BharatNet aim to connect 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats via high-speed optical fiber, of which over 1.5 lakh were connected by 2020. Simultaneously, establishing more than 3.7 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) has extended digital service delivery to rural and remote areas. These CSCs function as inclusive access points, offering health, education, agriculture, banking, and public utilities services in a culturally and linguistically localized format, catalyzing rural digital entrepreneurship and last-mile inclusion. India’s approach to digital governance extends beyond infrastructure to encompass citizen-centric digital services and platform-based public service delivery models. Platforms such as UMANG, eHospital, BHIMUPI, DigiLocker, eCourts, Tele-Law, and eWay Bills have simplified citizen interaction with the state, enhancing the ease of living and improving administrative efficiency. The Government eMarketplace (GeM) has transformed public procurement by making it more transparent, efficient, and accessible for small businesses and start-ups. The Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile (JAM) trinity has revolutionized welfare delivery by facilitating Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) into verified bank accounts, eliminating intermediaries, and saving over ?1.7 lakh crore by 2020.

India’s strategic thrust towards digitalization since the early 2000s, and particularly after the launch of the Digital India programme in 2015, reflects an ambitious attempt to leverage digital infrastructure not merely as a technological upgrade but as an instrument of governance reform, economic empowerment, and social equity (Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, n.d.-a). Digital infrastructure forms the bedrock of contemporary digital governance, unlocking scalable, secure, and inclusive public service delivery in India. It comprises high-speed broadband networks, State Data Centres, identity platforms, cloud systems, and institutional linkages essential for capturing, processing, storing, and transmitting data across government and citizen-facing services (Aapti Institute, 2024). Since the launch of the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) in 2006, India’s efforts have focused on strategic infrastructure investments like State Wide Area Networks (SWANs), State Data Centres (SDCs), and Common Services Centres (CSCs) to decentralize digital access across states and districts (Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, n.d.-a). Building on the foundation laid by the National e-Governance Plan, the Digital India Mission—initiated in December 2015—elevated infrastructure development to a national policy priority by integrating platforms such as

The proliferation of mobile devices, growth in internet penetration, and public investments in digital infrastructure have enabled a gradual shift from paper-based systems to platform-based governance. Concurrently, global paradigms such as open government, digital inclusion, and citizen-centric innovation, captured in international indices like the UN E-Government Development Index and the World Bank’s GovTech Maturity Index, have influenced national aspirations and strategy formulation. However, these technological and global catalysts can only be transformative when embedded within a coherent legal and policy framework that ensures institutional legitimacy, citizen trust, and systemic accountability. In this regard, digital governance’s legal and policy foundations are critical for establishing enabling conditions for its practical and equitable implementation. As highlighted by Sachdeva (2002), the transition to digital modes of governance requires not only the removal of outdated regulatory provisions but also enacting new laws on digital authentication, electronic records, data protection, cybercrime, and privacy. Additionally, procedural simplification through single-window systems, interoperability standards, and e-payment protocols is essential to reduce administrative friction and promote

For instance, the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI) 2022 places India 105th out of 193 countries, with notable improvements in the Online Services Index (OSI) and Human Capital Index (HCI), making it one of South Asia’s top digital governance performers despite a recalibrated drop in global ranking (UN DESA, 2022). In the Network Readiness Index (NRI) 2023, India stood at 65th among 134 countries, reflecting advancements in digital infrastructure, skills, and public digital platforms like Aadhaar and UPI (Portulans Institute, 2023). However, challenges persist, as highlighted by the ND-GAIN Index, which underscores India’s vulnerability due to digital inequality and climate-sensitive infrastructure (Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative, 2023). These performance indicators reflect a dual narrative: India is at the forefront of digital public innovation, yet its trajectory remains marred by barriers to inclusivity, last-mile service delivery, and institutional adaptability. The conceptual framework of digital governance in India encompasses key principles and mechanisms that collectively aim to bridge these gaps and foster a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Digital governance extends beyond mere e-Governance or ICT deployment; it refers to the strategic, integrated use of digital tools to transform governance models, improve service delivery, enhance transparency, and facilitate citizen

The evolution of governance reforms in India must be situated within the broader global and domestic transitions in public administration. Inheriting its foundational structures from British colonial rule, India retained key institutional frameworks post-Independence in 1947, including the Parliament, Executive, Judiciary, and systems of law and order and revenue administration. Although these institutions provided a degree of continuity and stability, they gradually became mired in procedural rigidity, excessive centralization, and legal formalism. Mathur (2013) notes that the performance of the three core organs of governance, the legislature, executive, and judiciary, has drawn increasing public concern, particularly in their responsiveness to the rising aspirations of Indian citizens. In the early decades post-independence, India adopted a centralized, commandand- control model of economic and administrative governance. State officials wielded considerable discretion over the allocation of licenses, quotas, and permits, while the private sector remained underdeveloped and tightly regulated. This framework, while aligned with the nation-building ethos of the time, ultimately led to inefficiencies, corruption, and citizen disenchantment. The 1990s marked a watershed moment in India’s governance trajectory. With a balance-of-payments crisis and external pressures from international financial institutions such as the IMF and World Bank, India adopted neoliberal economic reforms centered on liberalization, privatization, and globalization (Ramesh Singh, 2013). These reforms fundamentally altered the state’s role from a direct provider of goods and services to a facilitator and regulator. A new governance discourse emerged, emphasizing accountability, transparency, efficiency, and citizen participation. This also marked the diffusion of New Public Management (NPM) ideas, which advocated for performance-based administration, managerial autonomy, and partnership with non-state actors. Simultaneously, the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2002–2007) explicitly identified governance as a key determinant of development outcomes, underscoring that economic growth could not be sustained without reforming the institutions

This transformation, enabled and accelerated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), is not merely technical, but deeply institutional, cultural, and political. As states move toward more digitized, networked, and citizen-responsive systems, drawing upon theoretical frameworks that help explain, interpret, and evaluate these complex dynamics becomes essential. Theories provide the conceptual scaffolding necessary for analyzing the design, implementation, outcomes, and unintended consequences of digital governance practices. At its core, a theory systematically explains a phenomenon or set of phenomena. It involves a coherent set of interrelated concepts, assumptions, and propositions that define causal relationships and offer predictive insights (Kerlinger, 2000). According to Prasad et al. (2017), theory represents a systematic grouping of interdependent concepts that offer a framework to organize existing knowledge, explain observable events, and predict yet-unobserved outcomes. Hollander (1967) adds that theories contain one or more functional statements or propositions that articulate relationships between variables to account for empirical realities. Central to any theory are concepts, the building blocks that articulate the causal linkages and assumptions within a conceptual system. When structured together, these elements form a deductive framework for reasoning and explanation. In sum, theory allows us to understand what is happening in digital governance and why, how, and with what implications. Digital governance, distinct from narrower terms like e-government or e-governance, is a multi-layered process involving the reconfiguration of power, the redesign of institutions, the engagement of diverse stakeholders, and the transformation of public value creation in a digitally mediated environment. It encompasses dimensions of public administration, information systems,

Transformations occur unevenly across sectors and regions, with older paradigms coexisting with or even outlasting newer innovations. As Dunleavy, Margetts, Bastow, and Tinkler (2006, p. 216) perceptively observe: “Defining periods in the evolution of any complex system, such as public management systems in advanced industrial countries, is tricky. New developments accumulate while older trends are still playing out and flourishing. Relatively established ideas move from leading-edge countries or sectors to implementation in previous laggard areas, even as the same ideas are being repudiated or reversed in the erstwhile pioneering locations. Moreover, a confusing welter of changes goes on simultaneously, amongst which it is difficult to distinguish ephemeral and hyped-up innovations from those that are fundamental and longerlasting”. This observation aptly captures the administrative reforms’ non-linear and layered character in the digital era. The coexistence of multiple reform paradigms ranging from early e-government initiatives focused on service delivery, to broader e-governance aimed at leveraging technologies for participatory governance, and finally to the strategic integration seen in digital governance illustrates how public sector innovation is cumulative and contested. Digital governance, in particular, cannot replace previous phases. Instead, it serves as their expansion and convergence, wherein technology, data, and citizen-centricity are embedded in policymaking, service design, and institutional accountability. To fully understand the rise of digital governance, examining the broader historical trajectory of administrative reforms is important. In the constantly changing field of environmental science and technology, researchers are increasingly adopting eco-friendly and sustainable approaches to address the widespread problems of contamination and pollution. A potential perspective that demonstrates a harmonic fusion of nature and nanotechnology is the creation of nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing secondary metabolites derived from plants. Due to their low toxicity, catalytic effectiveness, and biocompatibility, iron oxide nanoparticles (IO NPs) and silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O NPs) have become essential materials for environmental remediation. The production of these NPs depends heavily on secondary metabolites found in plants, including flavonoids, polyphenols, and tannins. These bioactive substances function as reducing, stabilizing, and capping agents during the creation of NPs, essentially serving as natural biofactories (Mittal et al., 2013) (Figure 1). The reduction of metal ions to NPs is driven by organic reaction mechanisms, such as redox reactions mediated by these metabolites, guaranteeing an environmentally benign and effective fabrication method. (Jadoun et al., 2021) Additionally, the incorporation of organic groups to the NPs’ surface, these metabolites greatly increases their catalytic activity and selectivity. IO NPs synthesized from plant extracts, particularly in forms like magnetite (Fe2O4) or hematite (Fe2O3), which exhibit special surface characteristics and remarkable magnetic behavior (Logeswari et al., 2015). These qualities guarantee a low environmental effect by making it easy to recover and recycle them after application. The organic functional groups obtained from plant metabolites give them increased stability and dispersibility, which increases their efficacy in remediation methods. Similarly, Ag2O NPs generated from plants display exceptional catalytic and antibacterial capabilities, expanding their use in combating environmental contaminants (Ettadili et al., 2022). It is essential to develop materials that meet stringent performance and sustainability criteria. By following green chemistry principles and guaranteeing non-toxicity, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, and ease of recovery, plant-derived NPs meet this requirement (Bao et al., 2021). These qualities maximize its usefulness while reducing ecological problems. Optimizing nanomaterials for practical uses is still difficult, though surface engineering and creative synthesis methods are required to address problems such as aggregation, instability, possible toxicity, and high recovery costs. Organic functional groups derived from secondary metabolites play a crucial role in this context, stabilizing NPs and enhancing their selectivity and activity for specific remediation tasks (Jebali et al., 2011) from plant extracts are examined in this chapter. It highlights the organic reaction processes involved, the critical role of secondary metabolites which play in the synthesis process and, on the other hand, the surface functionalization plays in boosting their catalytic activity for environmentally friendly remediation (Jeevanandam et al., 2022).

1. Introduction
Green chemistry represents a transformative approach to chemical research and industrial practice, emphasizing the design of products and processes that minimize environmental impact and enhance sustainability. Introduced by Paul Anastas and John Warner in 1998, the field is grounded in the Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry, which provide a framework for reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing the use of hazardous substances. These principles guide chemists in creating safer, more sustainable processes across various industries (Dichiarante et al., 2010).
1.1. Green Chemistry Defined
At its core, green chemistry seeks to reduce or eliminate the generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and application of chemical products. Unlike traditional environmental protection strategies, which often focus on managing waste and emissions after they have been created, green chemistry aims to prevent pollution at the source. This preventive approach is not only environmentally beneficial but also economically advantageous, as it can lead to cost savings through more efficient use of resources (Basics of Green Chemistry, 2013).
1.2. The Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry
The Twelve Principles, which include waste prevention, atom economy, the use of safer solvents, and the design for energy efficiency, serve as the foundation for green chemistry practices. These principles encourage chemists to rethink traditional methods and to innovate in ways that reduce the environmental footprint of chemical processes. For example, the principle of atom economy focuses on designing reactions that incorporate all reactants into the final product, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency (12 Principles of Green Chemistry, 2021).

Over the past few decades, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been showing great importance in the field of organic synthetic reactions, catalysis, sensors, biomedicines, environment rehabilitation, etc. (Gawande, M. B. et al., 2013; Del Rio, M. et al., 2022). Numerous research teams have recognized the significance of solid support materials for the creation of environmentally acceptable nano catalysts with high catalytic activity in light of the infinite advantages of MNPs (Sharma, R. K. et al., 2016; Gawande, M. B. et al., 2013; Deng, J. et al., 2011; Nasrollahzadeh, M. et al., 2015; Hudson, R. et al., 2014; Payra, S. et al., 2017; Chng, L. L. et al., 2013; Parandhaman, T. et al., 2017; Zhang, F. et al., 2014; Pourjavadi, A. et al., 2012). Heterogeneous catalysts in organic chemistry are solid catalysts that, while remaining in a distinct phase (usually solid) from the reactants (generally liquids or gasses), promote chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. These catalysts, which have multiple benefits such as ease of separation, recyclability, and selective reactivity, are essential in a variety of industrial processes and laboratory reactions (Lattuada, M. et al., 2007; Jiang, K. et al., 2011). The standard formula for ferrite nanoparticles is MFe2O4, where M is usually divalent metal ion like copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), or nickel (Ni), and iron (Fe) is the common metal (Kazemi, M. et al., 2018). These nanoparticles work very well as heterogeneous catalysts in a variety of chemical reactions because of their special magnetic and electrical characteristics.Because of its special qualities as a catalyst in a variety of processes, copper ferrite (CuFeO4), a mixed-metal oxide, has drawn interest in organic chemistry (Kharisov, B. I. et al., 2019; Zhu, J. et al., 2014; Vannucci, A. K. et al., 2012). It is a spinel-type ferrite that can catalyse a variety of organic transformations because it combines iron and copper in a stable, highly active structure. With benefits including high stability, reusability, and low toxicity, these catalysts are frequently employed in processes like oxidation, coupling, and reduction (Taghavi Fardood, S. et al., 2018). The Figure 1 represents schematic diagram of a reaction where the ferrite nanoparticles as catalyst have been recovered with the aid of an external magnet after the formation of reaction product.

1. Introduction
Chemists have been interested in using light as an energy source to trigger chemical reactions since many years. Under the photochemical conditions, molecules absorb light and get electronically excited. Consequently, in comparison to the ground state, the electronic distribution in the molecules is substantially altered in excited states. The reaction spectrum of a family of compounds is significantly expanded. In many cases, a complete synthesis can be greatly shortened by employing photochemical processes, and simple substrates can often yield complex, polycyclic, or highly functionalized molecules. This opens up new avenues in search of physiologically active compounds by providing new product libraries that are hard to obtain using ground-state reaction pathways. The photochemical reactions proved to be very fruitful for organic synthesis. It is because a large number of compounds having both industrial and academic importance required excited state for their synthesis (Glusac, 2016). The compound exhibits different chemical reactions in photochemically excited state (Oelgemöller & Hoffmann, 2016). The light induced chemistry has become a fascinating research area for last several decades. In 1912, Ciamician in his seminal work prophesied the necessity regarding the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy in future and its impact in future life for renewable energy (Oelgemöller & Hoffmann 2016). The need of photochemistry is of utmost importance for some fascinating reactions anticipated in future like splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen, artificial photosynthesis and even photocatalysis (Fujishima & Honda, 1972; Chu et al., 2017). The familiar light driven reactions include cyclization of conjugated molecules to polycyclic compounds, photodissociations and both intra- and intermolecular proton transfer reactions (Li et al., 2010; Lan et al., 2005; Devine et al., 2008; Ashfold et al., 2006; Blank, 1994; Szabla et al., 2016). The photodissociation reactions occurs through ps* states, the s* orbital is situated around A-B bond (A and B are respectively a heteroatom and leaving group). However, the proton transfer reactions (PT) occur via charge transfer states. In this book chapter we will explore the synthetic utility and applications of Barton reaction.

Introduction
A significant challenge in the field of chemistry lies in the application of green methodologies aimed at enhancing the efficiency, cleanliness, and environmental sustainability of chemical processes in alignment with contemporary green chemistry goals. Recent global environmental issues have motivated researchers to create and implement more sustainable chemical practices to reduce the reliance on and generation of harmful toxic materials. The importance of coupling reactions lies in their role as effective and robust techniques for synthesizing key pharmaceutical agents, polymers, and natural products (Colberg, 2022). Crosscoupling reactions are particularly focused on the formation of C-C (carbon-carbon) and C-X (carbon-heteroatom) bonds. For the last three decades, cross-coupling chemistry has been widely utilized to facilitate the development, discovery, & market introduction of innovative types of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals (Carsten Bolm, 2012).
In cross-coupling polymer reactions, two reagents equipped with activating functional groups engage with a specific metal catalyst, culminating in creating a new covalent bond. The loss of the activating groups carries out this process. In the 1940s, Kharasch and Fields first discovered the cross-coupling reactions using Grignards reagent with aryl or alkyl halides in the presence of metal halides such as NiCl2, CoCl2, FeCl3, CrCl2, or CuCl2 as a suitable catalyst. (Wu, 2021). Cross-coupling reactions have tremendous valuable applications in many vital areas, such as powerful tools for synthesizing essential pharmaceuticals, natural products, polymers, and agrochemicals. Furthermore, cross-coupling reactions have facilitated the synthesis of important molecules with industrial relevance, such as losartan, which is produced through a late-stage Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. Additionally, these reactions have created previously unattainable molecules, as the Suzuki coupling reaction ranks as the second most prevalent reaction in medicinal chemistry (Kotha, 2022). The predominance of sp2-hybridized carbon nucleophiles and electrophiles in most cross-coupling reactions has presented challenges in the pharmaceutical sector, as the “flattening” of many pharmaceutical targets results in a reduced number of specific drugs and an increase in off-target interactions. Nevertheless, crosscoupling reactions exemplify the capacity of robust synthetic methodologies to profoundly influence and inspire molecular design within the chemical industry. Recent trends in advances with the cross-coupling reactions are enabling the development of new reaction mechanisms, the synthesis of new compounds & development of new catalysts, and reactions that proceed under milder conditions.

Introduction 
Five-membered heterocyclic molecules play a unique function in both natural and synthetic organic chemistry. The chemistry of azoles is currently being continually investigated in pharmaceutical chemistry. One of the most important fields of medicinal chemistry is the study of heterocyclic bioactive molecules containing nitrogen atoms. Triazoles have been found as a potential heterocyclic component in a wide range of drug scaffolds. It has a five-membered nitrogen heterocycle core with three nitrogen atoms and two carbon atoms. In 1885, Bladin coined the word “triazole” to describe the five-membered (Singh et al., 2018). 1,2,3-triazole and 1,2,4-triazole are the two isomeric forms of triazole (Matin et al., 2022). The core has a substantial impact on biological activity. The influences of the nitrogen heteroatom on the reactivity of the lead compound target medication pharmacokinetics and metabolism are affected by interactions between the lead chemical and several target inhibitors. Table 1, shows two tautomers of triazole depending on the hydrogen bonded to the nitrogen ring. Antimicrobial (Patil et al., 2023), anticonvulsants (Guan et al., 2007), antimalarial (Gujjar et al., 2009), antitumor (Al-Soud et al., 2004), antiviral (Al-Soud et al., 2004), antiproliferative (Masood-Ur-Rahman et al., 2017), anticancer (Minjian et al., 2017), antioxidants (Karrouchi et al., 2016), analgesics (Lass-Flörl C. 2011), antifungal (Guan et al., 2007, Lass-Flörl C. 2011), antiplasmodial (Balabadra et al., 2017), antibacterial (Guan et al., 2007, Khaligh et al., 2016), immunostimulants (Lee et al., 2007), and antidiabetic (Wang et al., 2017) are just a few of the numerous medications that demonstrate the pharmacological significance of triazole as a core heterocyclic structural component show in Figure 1.

1. Introduction
Medicinal organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry focused on the design, development, and synthesis of organic molecules that can be used as therapeutic agents. It connects biology, pharmacology, and organic chemistry and is essential to the process of finding and developing new drugs. Here are some foundational concepts in medicinal organic chemistry:
1.1. Drug Discovery and Design
Medicinal chemists aim to identify bioactive compounds that can interact with specific biological targets, such as proteins or enzymes, to produce a desired therapeutic effect. The discovery process often starts with lead compounds, which may be found in natural sources (e.g., plants, fungi) or through high-throughput screening of large chemical libraries. Drug discovery and design (Zhong et al., 2014; Patani et al., 1996; Lipinski C. A., 2004) are critical aspects of medicinal organic chemistry, focused on identifying and optimizing chemical compounds with potential therapeutic effects. This complex, multi-step process combines organic chemistry, biology, and pharmacology to create drugs that are both effective and safe for clinical use (Figure 1). 1.1.1. Target Identification and Validation
The first step in drug discovery is identifying a biological target (Schenone et al., 2013), often a protein, enzyme, or receptor associated with a specific disease. This target must be validated, meaning that it is confirmed as essential for the progression of the disease. For instance, the identification of enzymes that play a role in cancer cell growth can provide targets for anticancer drug development. The list of some targets and their therapeutic application are given in table 1.
1.1.2. Hit Identification and Lead Compound Discovery
After identifying a target, medicinal chemists seek “hit” compounds that show initial biological activity against it. High-throughput screening (HTS) methods are often used to test thousands of compounds from chemical libraries to find potential hits. These hits are then refined to identify “lead” compounds, which exhibit stronger or more specific activity.

1. Introduction
Every part of life is susceptible to continual change, and one of humanity’s primary goals is to manage these changes for our advantage. This is particularly true in the fields of medicine and pharmacology. These fields concentrate on the synthesis or discovery of chemical combinations and substances, as well as their use in the treatment of psychological and physical ailments. Drug product manufacturing has been governed for many years by a regulatory framework that tests raw materials, in-process materials, end-product features, and batch-based operations, and sets process conditions to ensure the quality of finished goods (Patel & Shah, 2022).
1.1. Drug Discovery
Drug discovery is a multi-step process that takes a lot of time and effort. From the earliest known civilizations, plants, minerals, and animal parts have been used as remedies. As knowledge expanded, so did the methods for finding new drugs. The first step is identifying the biological target, which can be proteins, RNA, or DNA, that causes the disease. The next step is screening molecules that can interact with the target or Hit compounds. “Hits”—new molecules with promise for use in medicine—can be natural products, compounds produced by computational chemistry, compounds discovered by chemical library screening, compounds from combinatorial chemistry, or compounds originating from pharmaceutical biotechnology. The chemical structures and drug properties of the Hit compounds are then optimized and assessed in vitro and in vivo to obtain Lead compounds. A lead compound needs to have a well-established structure and mode of operation. In order to make the lead chemical a safe medication candidate for human clinical trials, it is further refined (Figure 1). In the preclinical phase that follows, the drug candidate’s dissolution, transport, catabolism, and excretion in animals, as well as safety and dosage concerns, are further investigated (Guan & Wang, 2024) (Leal, 2020)

Introduction and Applications of 1,2-Azoles
Interest in the chemistry of 1,2-azoles has grown significantly over the last ten years, mostly due to the discovery of intriguing features shown by a large number of 1,2-azoles derivatives. 1,2-azoles, which are five-membered heterocycles with nearby nitrogen and heteroatoms (X = N, O, S), are highly prized in organic synthesis by using heterocyclic substituents that contain nitrogen, sulfur, or oxygen, the five-membered ring system’s biological activity and bioavailability can be improved. Functionalized pyrazoles, isoxazoles, and isothiazoles are found in a large number of naturally occurring and synthetically produced medicinally relevant molecules (Chakroborty et al., 2013, Preeti et al., 2018). Numerous biological actions are exhibited by these molecules (Pathak et al., 2012, Yan et al., 2007, Ruan et al., 2012, Katritzky et al., 2001, Shaw et al., 2012, Waldo et al., 2007, Uramaru et al., 2010, Cutri et al., 2004). A few examples of molecules with this structural pattern are shown in Figure 1. Table 1 lists the uses of 1,2-azoles in medications, agrochemistry, natural products, and pharmaceuticals.

Introduction 
Heterocyclic chemistry is advancing rapidly, driven by its diverse applications and crucial role in drug discovery (Kabir & Uzzaman, 2022; Vala et al., 2022). Among various heterocycles, nitrogen and oxygen-containing compounds such as pyrazoles, thiazoles, and triazoles are especially notable for their potent biological activities (Li Petri et al., 2020). These compounds play a key role in addressing diseases caused by microbes, resistant strains, and genetic mutations. Advances in synthetic methods have enabled the development of vast heterocyclic libraries essential for drug screening. Remarkably, heterocyclic frameworks account for nearly 75% of modern low molecular-weight drugs, highlighting their significance in medicinal chemistry (“Thematic Issue ‘Heterocyclic Compounds in Medicinal Chemistry, 2020). Within this context, 1,2,3-triazole has gained significant attention due to its exceptional stability under oxidative, reductive, and hydrolytic conditions, as well as its efficient and regioselective synthesis (Vaishnani et al., 2024). Its unique structural features such as lipophilicity, polarity, rigidity, and favorable pharmacological properties along with strong binding affinity to biomolecular targets, make it an indispensable scaffold in bioactive heterocycles (Devasia et al., 2022). Moreover, 1,2,3-triazole has been used as a bioisostere in medicinal chemistry, aiding the development of pharmaceutical drugs. 1,2,3-Triazoles display a wide array of therapeutic activities, including antiepileptic (Pålhagen et al., 2001), anti-platelet (Campos et al., 2009), anti-microbial (Baddam et al., 2024; El Malah et al., 2020; Mendapara et al., 2024), anti-viral (Farghaly et al., 2024; Gadali et al., 2024; Sabt et al., 2024), anti-inflammatory (Ambala et al., 2024; Awasthi et al., 2024; Qi et al., 2024), anti-cancer (Belay et al., 2024; Bimoussa et al., 2024; Duan et al., 2024; Meenakshy et al., 2024), anti-leishmanial (Molaei et al., 2024; Rodrigues Gazolla et al., 2024), antiplasmodial (A. Yadav et al., 2024; J. Yadav & Kaushik, 2024), anti-alzheimer (Shareghi-Boroujeni et al., 2024), and anti-HIV (Alvarez et al., 1994; Feng et al., 2021; Lazrek et al., 2001) effects. They also act as enzyme inhibitors (Dhameja et al., 2022; El-Naggar et al., 2024; G. Kumar et al., 2024; A. Singh et al., 2024; M. Singh et al., 2024), and anti-convulsants, and protect against snake venom (Ornellas et al., 2024; Simas Pereira Junior et al., 2024). Notably, approved drugs containing 1,2,3-triazole include tazobactam (ß-lactamase inhibitor), cefatrizine (anti-bacterial), and rufinamide (anti-convulsant) (Figure 1).
