This chapter deals with the objects used in R which contains the data in various formats. The data types used in R has also been mentioned in this chapter. The chapter also includes the functions used in R as the codes for accomplishing several jobs related to data analysis.

Unlike C language and Java, the variables in R are not declared as some data type. The variables are assigned with R object and the data type of R object becomes the data type of the variable. The commonly used R objects in R are vectors, lists, matrices, arrays, factors and data frames. The vector object is the simplest one and other R-objects are built upon the vectors. The different data types of these vectors are logical, numeric, integer, complex, character and raw. The objects in R are stored by the name of a variable and the data type of the object is determined by its content. To know the data type of a variable the class() function is used. 8.1. Major Obstacle to Nigeria Economic Growth

In Nigeria, high transport prices are rightly seen as a major obstacle to economic growth of the region. This has been documented in several studies. One of them (Amjadi and Yeats, 1995) even concluded that, in Nigeria, transport costs are a higher trade barrier than import tariffs and trade restrictions. In this paper, it is analyzed, identified and quantified the factors behind Nigeria’s high prices of road transport, with the purpose of helping policy-makers adopt appropriate actions to reduce transport prices to domestic and international trade. Cancer remains a challenge because of its incurability and fatality.  Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in companion animals such as dogs and cats and is particularly common in animals that live 10 years or longer. Of all species, dogs develop neoplasm twice as frequently as humans, with incidence of skin and mammary tumours being the highest.

Data on incidence rates are relatively new development in the veterinary medicine. One of the major sources of various dog neoplasm incidence rates has been a population based animal tumour registry. Though, majority of epidemiological studies have been reported from various countries, in India knowledge about epidemiology of canine neoplasm is scant.

The animals are weighed between seven to thirty nine kilograms. There are twenty three cases of non spayed and seven cases of spayed dogs. Out of thirty clinical cases of mammary tumour presented, 10 cases (33.33%) have multiple growths, and 20 cases (66.67 %) have solitary growths, pedunculated growth are 12, remaining eighteen growths are sessile. Ulcerated and inflamed are 36.67 % (11/30), and non infected are 63.33% (20/30).The surface of tumour is nodular in eight cases (4.18). Recurrence are recorded in 4 (13.33%) cases whereas, first time occurrence are 26 (86.67%).

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of fluoride more than permissible limit has been observed in ground water near Danishpet, Rajammannar Colony, Vayapurikombai, Melkombai, Umbilikampatty, Andikottai HC in Kadyampatty area, Salem district. Fluoride reaches to a maximum of 2.8 mg/l. Fluoride concentrations in ground water in various areas are as follows: Danishpet(2.0mg/l), Rajammannar Colony (2.8mg/l), Vayapurikombai (2.4 mg/l), Melkombai (2.4mg/l), Umbilikampatty (2.2 mg/l), and Andikottai HC (2 mg/l).. Granite gneiss and associated secondary vein filling minerals may be the source of high fluoride in ground water. The high concentration of Fluoride in ground water has led to human health hazard in the form of dental and skeletal deformation in the parts of Danishpet, Rajammar Colony, Vayapurikombai, Melkombai, Umbilikampatti and Andikottai HC villages.

In recent years, with actual primary and secondary data on environmental and ecological consequences of marine and associated debris, this theme established an increased attention on research (Andrady, 2011).

15.1 Introduction

The oceans cover 71% of the earth’s surface and it acts a natural collector and store of solar energy. On an average day, 60 million sq. km. of tropical seas absorb an amount of solar radiation equivalent in heat content to about 245 billion barrels of oil, if this energy could be trapped, large scale renewable source becomes available especially for tropical countries. The energy available in the ocean is clean, continuous throughout the year and renewable.

Renewable energy contribution to the available energy resources is very important to the country as it is presently facing an energy resources crunch. Out of the total installed capacity of approximately 370.106 GW as on March 2020, Renewable Power Plants including hydro-electric plant contribute 35.86 % of total installed capacity. However, with the present increase in demand, more attention is required to extract the renewable sources so that at least 50 to 60 % share for the total energy requirement by the renewable energy sources.

There are various forms of ocean energy such as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Wave Energy, Tidal Energy, Salinity Gradient Energy, Offshore Wind Energy, Marine Currents, Marine Biomass Conversion. Among these, the first three forms are likely to be technically viable for the future.

More recently Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India hasdeclared Ocean Energy as renewable energy, and clarified to all the stakeholders that energy produced using various forms of ocean energy such as tidal, wave, ocean thermal energy conversion among others shall be considered as renewable energy.

MNRE reported that, the total identified potential of tidal energy is about 8000 - 9000 MW, with about 7000 MW in the Gulf of Cambay in Gujarat, about 1200 MW in Gulf of Kutch and less than 100 MW in Sundarbans. Primary estimates of wave energy potential along Indian coast are about 5 – 15 MW/m, so that theoretical estimates are around 40 – 60 GW. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) has a theoretical potential of 180,000 MW in India subject to suitable technological evolution. As of date, there is not any installed Ocean Energy capacity in India.

11.1 Introduction

More than 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by the ocean, the world’s largest solar energy collector and storage system. By utilizing only a small portion of this energy, we can meet all the energy needs around the world. As long as the sun shines and there are natural ocean currents, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) energy source is free, abundant, and continually replenished. It is estimated that 3 to 5 terawatts (1 terawatt is 1012 watts) of baseload power generation can be practically harvested without affecting ocean temperatures or the environment of the planet. this is about the twice the global demand for electricity. Oceans are therefore an abundant renewable resource, offering a sustainable method for the production of electricity in the future. 

In order to understand the generation of tides first we should understand the motions of earth with respect to sun and moon. Tides are affected by the orbit of the moon around the earth and, less so, by the earth around the sun. The orbital motion of earth with respect to sun and the orbital motion of moon with respect to earth are as shown in Fig.15.1.

Introduction

The immense use of chemicals and pharmacological entities has put the public health at brisk of potential health hazards. These substances in modern days are presented in the form of common constituents of food, medicines, beverages and junk foods etc. However, long term consumption of these substances might be responsible for chronic toxicity, but the accidental ingestion of large quantities of these substances may result into adverse acute toxic reactions. Hence an experimenter should have the acumen to develop and perform the acute toxic tests in order to find out the lethal dose 50 i.e. LD50 of the substances.

Acute Toxicity Studies

Acute toxicity studies helps to establish the dose dependent adverse effect including mortalities. The LD50 has been used as a major parameter in screening of pharmacological agents for acute toxic potential. Apart from mortality, other biological effects and the time of onset, duration and degree of recovery on survived animals, are also important in evaluation of acute toxicity. Hence, acute toxicity study solely gives information about LD50, therapeutic index and the degree of safety of a pharmacological agent.

Acute toxicity is defined as adverse effects occur following oral or dermal administration of a single dose of a substance, or multiple doses given within 24 hours, or an inhalation exposure of 4 hours. Oral administration is the most common form of acute systemic toxicity testing.

1. Introduction

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a popular seed spice crop, used for dual purpose seed and leaves both. 1. Introduction

Heat transfer from a hot surface is a general method or technique of heating liquids and slurry type of food materials. In such cases the heat can be generated either directly by a heating element or indirectly from a hot medium like steam or hot water via a heat exchanger (e.g. shell and tube, plate). Therefore, for the heat transfer during heating by these techniques a temperature gradient will be required, which usually causes the fouling on the surface of the heating element or heat exchanger. Afterwards the fouling not only reduces the heat transfer rate but also results in quality deterioration within the product which is being processed. 

Introduction

Indian oilseeds scenario has been able to surmount the crisis of prolonged stagnation with increased production in the decades of 1980s and 1990s (Prasad 1991). Nevertheless, in the face of growing demands of vegetable oil both for human consumption and industrial use, there is every need to augment the oilseed production to new heights of sustainability (Prasad 1994a).

Apart from the traditional sources of vegetable oils from annual crops like groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, sesame, sunflower, safflower, niger, linseed, castor and soybean besides cotton seed and rice bran, more than 100 species of domesticated or wild plant species of India are known to contain oil in considerable quantities (Prasad, 1994c). In addition to the production from nine traditional oilseeds mentioned above, 3 million tonnes of vegetable oil is being harnessed from secondary sources like cottonseed, rice bran, coconut, Tree Borne Oilseeds (TBOs) and Oil Palm. Subramanian et al., (2005) reported that there are over 300 different species of trees which produce oil bearing seeds. Thus, there is a significant potential for non-edible oil source from different plants for biodiesel production as an alternative to petrodiesel.

It is estimated that TBOs have the potential to contribute more than 3 million tons of oil; but only a fraction of the potential is realised currently. Seeds of many of the oil bearing trees have been used by the ethnic communities for different purposes. Apart from seed oil, the trees yield valuable by-products including cake, which have industrial applications (Hocking, 1993; Chakravarty et al., 2012).

There are many species of plants found wild or cultivated inside as well as outside the forest areas containing sizeable amount of vegetable oil having domestic and industrial utility. Out of these species.The country has enormous potential of oilseeds of tree origin like Mahua (Madhuca indica and M. longifolia ), Sal (Shorea robusta), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Simarouba (Simarouba glauca), Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Ratanjyot /physic nut (Jatropha curcas), Jojoba (Simmondsia chinesis), Cheura (Diploknema butyracea), Kokum (Garcinia indica), wild Apricot (Prunus armeniaca), wild Walnut (Aleurites molucana), Kusum (Schleichera oleosa), Undi ( Calophyllum inophyllum), Tung (Verniciafordii) etc. which can be grown and established on the wastelands and under varied agroclimatic conditions.

INTRODUCTION
A tractor engine oil filter operates by directing engine oil through a pleated paper filter element that captures dirt, metal debris, and other contaminants. This process ensures that only clean oil returns to the engine, preventing internal parts from experiencing excessive wear and tear by maintaining a clean lubrication system. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), a tropical perennial tree native to West Africa, is the most productive oilseed crop for biodiesel, yielding up to 5 tons of oil per hectare (Mekhilef et al., 2011). Indonesia and Malaysia are the largest global producers, accounting for over 85% of the world’s palm oil (Atabani et al., 2012). Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm and is widely used in both food and fuel applications. However, its cultivation has raised environmental concerns, including deforestation, habitat loss, and carbon emissions (Gui et al., 2008). Efforts are being made to promote sustainable palm oil production to mitigate these impacts (Mekhilef et al., 2011). Deforestation, habitat loss, and carbon emissions are only a few of the serious environmental issues brought on by its cultivation (Fargione et al., 2008). Oil palm plantation growth has been connected to a decline in biodiversity, especially in tropical rainforests that are home to endangered species like Sumatran tigers and orangutans (Fitzherbert et al., 2008). According to Carlson et al. (2013), the conversion of peatlands for the production of oil palm contributes to climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
History of Oil Palm as Biodiesel Feedstock
Oil palm has been used for cooking and lighting for thousands of years in Africa and Southeast Asia (Obahiagbon, 2012). Research into its use as a biodiesel feedstock began in the 1980s, with Malaysia pioneering biodiesel development (Zainal et al.,2017).
• 1982: The Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) successfully tested palm oil-based biodiesel in diesel engines (Yusoff, 2006).
• Early 2000s: Commercial production expanded in Indonesia and Malaysia, driven by government policies and renewable fuel demand (Mekhilef, 2011).
• Sustainability challenges have led to the establishment of certification schemes such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) (Ruysschaert & Salles, 2014).

The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is recognised as the cheapest edible oil-yielding crop and has become one of the major oil crops in the world. The most productive oil-bearing crop, oil palm yields about three times the oil yield of coconut, seven times that of rapeseed, and ten times that of soybean. In terms of world production, palm oil maintains second place after soybean as a source of vegetable oil and has overtaken other crops such as rapeseed, sunflower, groundnut, and cottonseed. Under good agricultural management, a hectare of oil palm yields 5 to 7 tonnes of oil / year (Henson, 1991). The crop is unique in producing 2 distinct types of oil- palm oil and palm kernel oil- used for culinary and industrial purposes. Being rich in b-carotene, palm oil contributes substantially to nutritional and energy requirements of masses.

14.1 Introduction

An oil spill (or slick) is the intentional or unintentional release of oil into the natural environment as a result of human activity. The term often refers to marine oil spills where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters (Fig. 14.1).

Oil can refer to many different materials, including crude oil, refined petroleum products or by-products, oily refuse, oil mixed in waste, or oily ballast. Oil is also released into the environment from natural geologic seeps on the seafloor, as along the coastline. The fate, behavior, and environmental effects of spilled oil can vary depending upon the type and amount of material spilled. In general, lighter refined petroleum products such as diesel and gasoline are more likely to mix in the water column and are more toxic to marine life, but tend to evaporate relatively quickly and do not persist long in the environment. Heavier crude or fuel oil, while of less immediate toxicity, can remain on the water surface or stranded on the shoreline for much longer. Oil from the Exxon Valdez and Gulf War oil spills, while weathering over time, has persisted along the shoreline for years after the spill.

Nymphs and adult bugs suck the plant sap from spindle leaf and tender leaves.  Feeding marks are seen as necrotic lesions in the spindle and fully opened leaves.  The pest is seen in the nursery plants round the year but incidence is high during rainy season.

Nutritional Quality of Edible Oils

Fats improve the taste and flavour of foods. Fatty foods satiate a hungry person fast because fats remain in the stomach for a longer period than either protein or carbohydrate (sugar) foods. Fats also carry essential vitamins like A, D, E and K. They also provide the body with essential fatty acids. Thus, fats have a very important role to play in human nutrition.

Spectrum of Fats and Oils

It is not just the butter and ghee that provide us the necessary fats. Vegetable oils, meat and fish too add fats in our diet. There is an array of vegetable oils available to human beings. They are groundnut, rapeseed, sesame, sunflower, safflower, soybean, niger, cotton seed, coconut, palm and rice bran oils. Ghee(butter fat), however, is the main animal fat utilized widely. The quality and composition of these oils vary as also the preference of people.

Five major oilseeds are groundnut, sesamum, Rapseseed and Mustard, linseed and castor seed. India has the largest area and production of oilseeds in the world. Indian vegetable oil economy is the fourth largest in the world next to USA, China and Brazil.

Importance

• Oilseeds are sources of oil, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E and K and also contain 18 essential aminoacids and trace elements.

Okra is a tropical vegetable cultivating for its tender fruits. It is one of the major vegetable crops in India which can be grown in summer as well as rainy season. Fruits are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, iodine, iron, and potassium. Dry fruit skins and fibers are valued for manufacture of paper and card boards. The processed product, dehydrated okra plays a considerable role in export earnings. Dried seeds of okra found to have 20-24 percent protein and 13-22% edible oil hence, used for edible oil production. Mucilaginous stem is used for clarification of cane juice for preparing jaggery. Roasted ground seed are used as coffee substitute.

Cultivated okra is believed to be originated in tropical and subtropical Africa and phytogeographic studies indicated that it arose in Abyssinian region (Ethiopia). However, existence of large number of related species with wide variability and dominant characters suggested India as the secondary centre of origin. Some researchers suggested Hindustani centre of origin mainly India, Pakistan, & Burma.

Morphology and Pollination

Okra is an erect robust herbaceous annual with green or green with reddish tinged stem. Leaves are alternate, 3-7 lobbed, palmate, hirsute and serrate. Flowers are solitary, bisexual, axillary, peduncle is 2 cm long, epicalyx is up to 10 and bracteoles narrow and hairy. Calyx is fused with corolla hence falls with corolla after anthesis. Petals are 5, separate, yellow coloured with crimson spot on claw. Staminal column consists of numerous stamens (80-120) which are united to the base of the petals. Ovary is superior, stigma is small, 5-8 fid and deep red. Fruit is pyramidal and oblong beaked capsule, longitudinally furrowed, hirsute or glabrous, dehisce longitudinally when ripe. Seeds are dark green to dark brown, round and tuberculate.

Okra has higher average nutritive value (ANV) of 3.21 which is higher than tomato, egg plant and most of the cucurbits except bitter gourd (Grubban, 1977). Its roasted seeds are substitute for coffee. It is one of the export potential crop where it accounts to 60 per cent of fresh vegetables (excluding potato, onion and garlic) exported from India. Importing countries are Middle East, Western Europe and USA.

Origin and Distribution : It belongs to the genus Abelmoschus established by Medikus, 1787, however de Candolle (1824), treated it as section of Hibiscus.   In 1924 Hochreuntiner reinstated the genus Abelmoschus of Medikus stating that calyx, corolla and stamen fused together at the base and fall as one piece after anthesis (deciduous) where as in case of hibiscus these are persistent. Though the genus is of Asiatic origin, the origin of cultigen Abelmoschus  esculentus is variable like India (Master, 1875) Ethiopia {de Candolle (1883) and Vavilov (1957)}, Western Africa (Chevalier, 1940 and Mardorct, 1947) and Tropical Asia (Grubban, 1997) and probably its might have entered India at the end of 19th century. Cultivated okra is of old world origin. It arose as a cultigen in the Abyssinian region (Ethiopia). Wild species are indigenous to Africa.  Three wild species Abelmoschus tuberculatus, A. moschatus and A. ficulneus are native to India. Introduced to Mediterranean region to Europe and Asia. But during Columbian period it was introduced to America.  It still turnout to be polyphyletic (many places) in origin. A. tuberculatus (Indian origin) and an unknown species cross resulted into A. esculentus.

India with approximately 0.5 million ha (5 lakh ha) area and production and productivity of an average of 6 million tons and 12 tons/ha, respectively accounts for close to 75% of share of world production of okra and hence has been accorded a prominent place in the list of crops under R&D by the private seed companies in India. In India, okra has huge export potential as fresh vegetable to the neighbouring countries in the Middle East, like, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Muscat, Tehran, and Abu Dhabi and SouthEast Asia, particularly Singapore, Mauritius, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Unless a crop makes business sense on account of substantial acreage, production and seed sale volume, there will be no point in launching a full-fledged commercial breeding programme on that particular crop. Thus, okra qualifies a good candidate for commercial breeding in India.

Okra fruits are rich in calcium (90 mg/100 g fresh weight) and provide valuable supplementary items in the tropical diet which is starchy in nature lacking calcium and iron. The root and stem are used for clearing cane juice in preparation of jaggery or ‘gur’. The high iodine content of fruits helps prevent goiter, while leaves are used in inflammation and dysentery. It has yet multiple uses. The dry seed contains 13-22 % good edible oil and 20-24 % protein. The oil is used in soap, cosmetic industry and as vanaspati, while protein is used for fortified feed preparations. The crushed seed is fed to cattle for increasing the milk production and the fibre is utilized in jute, textile and paper industries. India ranks first in the world with 7.16 million tonnes of production 5.49 lakh hectares of area. Gujarat is the leading okra-producing state which produces around 1147.66 thousand tonnes from an area of 93.95 thousand hectares followed by West Bengal. Fresh fruit of okra is exported to UAE, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, UK, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The national average productivity is very low (11.70 t/ha), that the crop is prone to damage by major biotic stresses like fungus, nematodes and viruses like Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus and Enation Leaf Curl Virus. The yield potential of okra is low; however, it could be improved through hybridization. Marked heterosis has been reported in okra for yield and its components.

Okra, Abelmoschus esculentus under the family Malvaceae (Chromosome No.: 2n 126, 130, 132, 144) is an important vegetable in the tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world. Okra is mainly used for its tender green fruits as vegetable in many countries. In India, tender fruits are used as fried and boiled or in curry and sambar. It is also frozen, dehydrated and canned. Tender fruit contains appreciably high potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid and calcium. It is a popular vegetable crop of low in calories and high in dietary fibre and protein contents, rich in essential amino acids, lysine and tryptophan.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Okra has been regarded as of African origin. Perhaps it has been originated in Ethiopia and upper Nile region of Sudan. However, according to Zeven and Zhukovsky (1975), the genus Abelmoschus is considered to be of Asiatic origin. In fact, its cytotaxonomy confused that Abelmoschus might be of Asiatic origin and at least part of the cultigen. Joshi and Hardas (1976) believed that either the cultigen might have originated in Asia or it was present in Africa and India as a polyphyletic species. Significant native diversity of okra and its allied species in India points towards its secondary diversity here. Indian geneticists and cytologists reported that the wild relative A. tuberculatus which grows wild in India is one of the ancestors of cultivated okra, A. esculentus which is considered to be a natural amphidiploid species. Okra has been mentioned in ancient Sanskrit literature in the name “tindisha” and “gandhamula” which indicated very old association of this genus and its different species with India.

A family of approximately 29 genera and 600 species, Oleaceae are cosmopolitan but occur in great diversity in temperature and tropical Asia. Some of the largely represented genera of olive family and their approximately
reported species are Jasminum (300), Chionanthus (125), Linociera (80), Fraxinus (70), Ligustrum (40), Syringa (30) and Olea (20).
Genus Jasminum contains 90 species to be true in existence and use, range from landscape to hair adornments, and perfumes. It is native to Indo-Malayan region. Morphological variants from different species have been developed in different regions in India. Jasmines are one of the most important ornamental flowering plants, widely cultivated for their attractive and fragrant flowers. Jasmine has multiple uses like in the making of bouquets, garlands, decorating women’s hair as veni, beautifying pandals and marriage halls and the like, besides preparation of perfumes and cosmetics. Jasminum grandiflorum is highly priced for high grade perfumes throughout the world. Jasmine oil has a significant place as an ingredient in cosmetics, confectionary, ointments, disinfectants and detergents and in pharmaceutical beverages. The word ‘jasmine’ has been derived from a Persian name ‘Yasmun’ meaning fragrance.

Plant oleoresins, often referred to as resins, are sticky plant secretions synthesized in large quantities by about 10 % of plant families. Resin is secreted when a plant is disturbed and the sticky substances produced contain many toxic compounds used to defend the plant from herbivores and pathogens. A major component of resin is the terpenoid compounds. Although terpenoid compounds can be quite complex, they are all composed of five-carbon units, with an isoprene unit as the base. The simplest of these terpenes are the monoterpenes that possess 10- carbon atoms derived from two fused isoprene units. Monoterpenes are an important component of the volatile portion of terpenes and often emit very strong odors.

1. Introduction

Olive (Olea eurpaea L.) is an evergreen species commonly grown in the Mediterranean basin. The oil extracted from the fruit is a predominant component of the ‘Mediterranean diet’, which has documented heart- and cancer-protective benefits. These derive from the lipid composition and from biologically active molecules that accumulate during olive fruit development. The oil can reach up to 30% of the total fruit fresh weight at full ripening and is highly present in the mesocarp and at lower levels in seeds. Oil increase reaches a plateau in pulp after varaison. A marked triacylglycerol accumulation in seed and pulp occurs after endocarp lignification, when about 40 mg of oil per fruit per week can be synthesized. The fatty acid profile of the oil accumulating in the fruit is important in relation to its nutritional properties. The main fatty acid is oleic acid (C18:1), which represents about 75% of total fatty acids, followed by linoleic (C18:2), palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0) and linolenic (C18:3) acids (Martinelli and Dandekar, 2014).

The olive, Olea europaea L, is the only species of the botanical family Oleaceae with edible fruit. The tree blooms with small white flowers in May, and fruit set begins almost immediately afterward in May or June. Ripening is complete toward the end of November or December, depending on the variety. Its cultivation began more than 6000 years ago in the Middle East, and spread west on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea.

The olive is native to the Mediterranean region, tropical and central Asia and various parts of Africa. Historically, olive tree was symbol of ‘Peace and Goodwill’. Olive oil has long been considered sacred; it was used to anoint kings and athletes in ancient Greece. It was burnt in the sacred lamps of temples as well as being the “eternal flame” of the original Olympic Games. Olive oil produces many health benefits when used in cooking or when poured over salads. The use of olive oil can improve digestion and can benefit heart metabolism through its low content of cholesterol. Experts claim that olive oil consumption can cause a person to grow shiny hair, prevent dandruff, wrinkles, dry skin and acne, strengthen nails, stop muscle aching, lower blood pressure and cancel out the effects of alcohol. The nutritional value of olives also includes the high vitamin E content. Olives also have high amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids which also act as antioxidants. Apart from this olives are good source of iron, copper, and dietary fiber.

Olive scales are tiny pale-greyish insects which settle on branches, leaves and fruits and are active during April-November. S. oleae are round greenish brown scales. Nymphs and adults of both the species suck the sap from the tender shoots, and leaf petioles. Sooty-mould appears on leaves and branches of infested plants as a consequence of honeydew secre-tion. Shoots get dried up and fruits remain undersized.

Amongst the fruit crops, Olive is undoubtedly one of the world’s oldest cultivated crop and its cultivations dates back to 3000 B.C. and till date is recognized as a symbol of peace and prosperity. Olive is an evergreen subtropical plant, but for flowering and fruiting it does require chilling as most of the temperate fruits do. Although slow to grow, olive is a very long lived plant and with its typical dense foliage of olive green and silvery leaves also serves as an ornamental type. The centre of origin includes Palestine, Lebanon, north west Syria and Cyprus. The Greeks and Roman were well aware of the significance of olive oil during 900 to 600 B.C. and oil was considered as a luxury item in body anointment. From its native place olive established itself in the Mediterranean region especially Italy, Spain and from here to other parts of the world.
