The methodology has been carefully considered in order to comprehend the idea, procedures, and approaches used in the design of the study, information gathering, data analysis, and finding interpretation for the identification of relevant truths and the development of hypotheses. The methodology and a process employed in the study are covered in this chapter.

5.1 Locale of the Research

The rural areas of Darjeeling-Pulbazar CD block, Jorebunglow-SukhiaPokhri CD block in Darjeeling district in West Bengal was selected for the study. The area had been selected for the study because of the availability of appropriate respondents, people as well as the local language.

5.2 Pilot Study

Prior to beginning the actual research, a pilot study was carried out to better understand the regions, its inhabitants, institutions, and programmes activities associated to the migration process in the research area. During the pilot study period, the respondents’ situational and historical data were gathered.

Historical Perspective

Organic Farming was initiated in about 10,000 years back when ancient farmers started cultivation depending on natural sources only. There is a brief mention of several organic inputs in our ancient literature like Rigveda, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Kautilya Arthashastra etc. In fact, organic agriculture has its roots in traditional agricultural practices that evolved in countless villages and farming communities over the millennium.

Organic Movement

The organic movement began in the 1930s and 1940s as a reaction to agriculture’s growing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Artificial fertilizers had been created during the 18th century, initially with superphosphates and then ammonia derived fertilizers mass-produced using the Haber-Bosch process developed during World War I. These early fertilizers were cheap, powerful, and easy to transport in bulk. The 1940s has been referred to as the ‘pesticide era’. Sir Albert Howard is widely considered to be the father of organic farming. Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, made important strides in the earliest organic theory with his biodynamic agriculture. More work was done by J.I. Rodale in the United States, Lady Eve Balfour in the United Kingdom, and many others across the world. As a percentage of total agricultural output, organic farming has remained tiny since its beginning. As environmental awareness and concern increased, the originally supply-driven movement became demand driven. Standardized certification brought premium prices, and in some cases government subsidies attracted many farmers converting into organic farming. In the developing world, many farmers started organic farming according to traditional methods but are not certified. In other cases, farmers in the developing world have converted out of necessity. As a proportion of total global agricultural output, organic output remains small, but it has been growing rapidly in many countries, notably in Europe.

Research methodology gives detailed justification about the research methods and procedures carried out in the present study. The present study focuses on the women’s involvement in the dairy farming and their empowerment. Keeping in view the specific objectives of the study and various aspects relating to these objectives the methodological framework has been formulated. The sub topic under the research methodology is as follow:

3.1 Locale of the study

The present study entitled “Retrospective Multidimensional Study on Magnitude of Participation of Women in Dairy Farming in East district of Sikkim” was carried out in the villages of East district of Sikkim. Sikkim is the second smallest states in India, with an area of 7,096 sq. km in size. The meaning of Sikkim is “The valley of rice”. It lies between 27 º33' 00" N and 88 º30' 00" E. The average annual temperature of the state is 18 ºC (64 ºF) and annual rainfall is 2739 mm. The state is situated in the Eastern Himalayas and it shares its border with countries like Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. Mt Kanchendzonga (8585m) which is the third highest peak in the world is situated at Sikkim. According to 2011 census, population of state was 610,577 with male population of 323,070 and female population of 287,507. The literacy rate in the state is 81.40 percent. The density of the state is 86 people per km2 (Census,2011). The cattle population in the state was 264,860 in number (BAHS,2019). The state has four district- East, West, North, and South (Registrar General of India, 1989).

The global human population is increasing exponentially with time, and it is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050 (UN 2013). With rapid population growth, food consumption is predicted to more than double in the next 40 years. Due to limited land resources for cultivation and a stabilising trend in agricultural productivity, the role of livestock sector is increasing significantly to meet the rising food demand. Meanwhile, global livestock production has increased significantly in both number and productivity. Unprecedented urbanisation has a significant impact on food consumption patterns in general, as well as demand for livestock products. Animal diseases are a significant factor in reducing livestock productivity, particularly in developed countries. The limitations of traditional animal breeding hinder further improvement of livestock productivity. The use of biotechnological tools has major applications in improving animal health and production, increasing disease resistance, using assisted reproductive techniques, improving rapid diagnostic techniques, and improving vaccines in livestock systems. These interventions cover advancements in feeding, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, animal health control, and overall improvement of animal husbandry. Since genomic tools and selection have been widely adopted in developed countries to improve both productivity and quality of animal products, the prospects for increasing productivity in developing countries using genomic tools and selection have not been adequately investigated.

Livestock is one of the fastest growing agricultural subsectors in developing countries. In India has a vast diversity of animal genetic resources. Among them, sheep is an important ‘five star’ livestock species contributing significantly to rural economy through production of mutton, wool, manure, skin and milk etc. Sheep make a valuable contribution to the livelihood of the economically weaker sections of the society. The total Livestock population is 535.78 million and total sheep population is 74.26 million in in the country showing an increase of 4.6% and 14.1%, respectively over Livestock Census-2012. And it’s ranking 3rd in the world after China and Australia. Rajasthan is the fourth largest sheep rearing state in India with 7.9 million population (Livestock Census, 2019). Malpura sheep is one amongst the heaviest sheep breed of India, widely distributed in the semi-arid region of Rajasthan, mostly Tonk, Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur districts. Malpura sheep is reared and improved for mutton production since year 1975 at CSWRI, Avikanagar. The objective since then has been to improve the growth characteristics of this sheep breed for producing more carcass yield.The sheep is known for its adaptability to the harsh environment and potential for high meat production.Coat colour of Malpura sheep is white with coarse wool. The face is light brown with short, blunt ears. Animals have square compact body and long legs. Farmers also have liking for the long tail of animals for aesthetic purpose. The farmers like Malpura sheep for its properties like good mothering ability and produce sufficient milk to sustain and accelerate the growth of their neonates (Mishra et al., 2005), higher weight gain, number of lambs weaned, wool quality, walking capacity and the ease of management.

The integration of AI and blockchain technology holds immense promise for the finance sector, offering new avenues for efficiency, transparency, and risk management. By combining the analytical power of AI with the security and transparency of blockchain, financial institutions can streamline operations improve customer experiences, and mitigate risks more effectively. However realizing the full potential of this integration requires a nuanced understanding of its complexities, challenges, and opportunities.

Introduction

AI plays a key role in management effectiveness and adaptation, especially in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) facing evolving markets (Lemos S. I. C., et al., 2022). Designing AI-based management frameworks enhances companies’ economic activities through data analysis and informed decision making (Emine, Kalender., 2023). Academic research shows a growing interest in AI in management, with a focus on effective adoption practices and potential areas for development (Jbid, Arsenyan., Anke, Piepenbrink. 2023). Artificial intelligence (AI) significantly influences decision-making processes in management by enhancing rationality, efficiency, and fairness. AI, through machine learning and big data analysis, reduces managerial bounded rationality, enabling a shift from satisficing to optimizing decision making modes (Shtepa, S., et. al., 2023). In human resource management AI-enabled interview analysis improves candidate selection by uncovering hidden patterns and mitigating biases, leading to more objective decisions (Rajneesh, Panwar. 2023). Additionally, by increasing productivity, efficacy and creativity, the incorporation of AI into business strategy transforms decision-making; nonetheless, ethical considerations and human oversight are essential for responsible implementation (Gonesh, C., et. al., 2023).

Global economies have witnessed very deepened financial integration in past decade and have more room for leverage. However, these integrations have also witnessed various turmoil in the economy in the form of Russian- Brazil debt crisis, Asian financial crisis, Dot com bubble, Argentina debt crisis, Global financial crisis and many more since 1990s. Due to the existence of globalization, these crises have impacted not only a particular economy but has extended its scope.

The previous studies have found the credit growth and asset prices as a leading indicator. Some studies also showed that the foreign exchange reserve, broad money supply and trade as variables were also statistically significant. These studies have used either the Signal Extraction Approach used by Kaminsky and Reinhart (1999) which used a threshold value as a limit for multiple variables beyond which a crisis signal is given. Bucharest Stock Exchange (BSE)in Romania (Brezinski and Stephen, 2011) lost its attractiveness among foreign investors. However, there are not enough resources which focuses on Asian economies or India. The emergence of novel technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, cloud computing, big data analytics, machine learning (ML), internet of things (IoT), and 3-D printing, commonly known as Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0), offers developing nations like India both significant opportunities and challenges. IR4.0 technologies, sometimes referred to as the “digital revolution,” have numerous uses in the industries of services, industry, and agriculture.

The key to any Metaverse technology is their user experience. Analysis of Metaverse applications shows that most current applications are stand-alone or centralized. These applications provide different user experiences, based on the cardinal technology and interface devices used to communicate within virtual environments.2

Search engines are playing a prime role in generating leads for businesses (Olbrich and Schultz, 2014), Because of this, search engines are regarded as the most recent online communication channels for dynamic marketing (Olbrich and Schultz, 2014). To examine how academic institutions (in higher education) use the web to facilitate student relations and identify how prospective students are using the Internet to research academic institutions, Will et al. conducted a study that involved the analysis of more than 3000 university websites. The web continues to be the primary research resource for prospective students, counselors, and parents. The research was undertaken (Sampath Kumar and Kumar, 2013) to determine whether or not academics utilized search engines to access scholarly content from the internet. 285 (95%) of the 300 respondents used search engines to find academic content, compared to just 5% who didn’t. To access the Ed-tech companies that are playing a role in academia, comparable assessment is crucial.

Introduction Data analytics is a systematic analysis of data or statistics. It is also the process of collecting, cleaning, transforming, interpreting, modelling and visualization the data. Such transformed data has to be further investigated to retrieve helpful information that may help conclude and support decision making. This study presents revising selected two relative valuation models (PE Model, PB Model) by replacing the most non-significant variables used in the model with the critical variable that is the potential cause for improving the model’s performance. The objective of relative valuation is to value assets based on how similar assets are priced in the market. This paper measures the valuation accuracy using Root Mean Squared Errors and refine the relative valuation models using the machine learning algorithm for predicting the value of a stock. The following steps helped to revise and refine the PE Model, PB model (Relative valuation models) to predict the value of Sensex stocks.

9.1 ECONOMIC LOSSES DUE TO ANIMAL DISEASES

Economic considerations are increasingly forcing their way forward in the decision-making processes of animal health management. With the continuing intensification of livestock production systems, the economic implications of livestock diseases have become increasingly important at both farm and national levels, as they represent avoidable waste of scarce resources (McInerney, 1988). From an economic point of view, an animal disease either destroys the basic resources, reduces the attainable output, dwindles the efficiency with which the resources are converted into products, or decreases the economic value of products (McInerney, 1995).

The effects of a disease present in an animal or herd may be manifested by stunted growth, lowered production, delayed maturity, delayed conception, mortality, reduced resource (especially feed) use efficiency, etc. These negative impacts of a disease demand more resource(s) than usual, resulting in higher expenditures for the same output and reduced farm income. Apart from these negative effects at the farm or herd level, animal diseases lead to economic losses at the regional, national, and global levels too by increasing animal mortality, reducing productivity, increasing disease control costs, swelling losses in animal trade, decreasing the market values of livestock and their products, and ultimately ending at food insecurity. These economic impacts of livestock diseases, besides their social impacts, have now been recognized globally, in both developed and developing countries, necessitating quantification of the economic impact of animal diseases as an urgent and important step to support the prevention and control decisions for improved animal health to ensure better rural and global economy.

After assessing the prevalence or incidence of the disease concerned, the next step is to quantify the economic losses due to that disease by classifying and presenting all the information available on the losses, expressing these in monetary values, and identifying and quantifying the indirect losses attributable to a disease, to the extent possible. Usually, most of the negative effects of diseases can be conveniently estimated in terms of reduced output, mortality, reduced weight, delayed maturity, and treatment cost, directly. However, quantifying the indirect effects of the disease will be complex, but it is not impossible.

As we saw earlier, the economic impacts of animal diseases can be measured using statistical / epidemiological methods and economic methods. Economic methods of disease loss estimation include the Gross Margin Analysis, Enterprise Budgeting, Equi-Marginal Principle, Partial Budgeting, Cost Benefit Analysis, and Decision Analysis.

A complete neurological examination is warranted whenever an equine patient displays signs consistent with neurological disorder or to establish that the horse is neurologically normal (e.g., pre-purchase examination). Neurological examination of equine patient is challenging due to their large size, which prevents veterinarian from using many of the tests used for small animals. The key to a successful neurologic examination is to do the examination in a consistent and organized fashion. It is important to develop a routine, then do it the same way each time. This approach ensures that some parts of the examination are not forgotten and it also increases the consistency of the exam as you examine more number of equine patients. A standardized examination form is a valuable aid in this and can be concise. The goals of the neurologic examination are to determine whether disease of the nervous system exists, to localize the lesion to a particular area of the nervous system, and to describe and record the responses as a baseline for future evaluations. In this paper, a complete neurological examination is described with special emphasis on field conditions.

Traditional anticonvulsant therapies often yield inconsistent outcomes, necessitating the exploration of alternative treatments such as homeopathy [1][2]. Homeopathy’s individualized approach aligns with the principles of unicism, focusing on holistic care tailored to each patient’s unique symptom profile [3]. However, the subjective nature of remedy selection and response assessment poses challenges for practitioners.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) offers a promising avenue to address these challenges [4]. Predictive models can analyze complex datasets to uncover patterns that guide remedy selection and treatment strategies. This study evaluates the comparative performance of Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost in predicting treatment outcomes for canine epilepsy managed with homeopathic remedies.

Sustainable agriculture focuses on practices that ensure the long-term well being of the environment, society, and economy. In India, the government has instituted various policies and initiatives to encourage sustainable farming practices and enhance farmers' income. Embracing sustainability is crucial for making agriculture both profitable and environmentally friendly for future generations, and technology emerges as the key enabler for achieving this goal. Technological advancements empower farmers to make informed decisions regarding optimal planting and harvesting times, as well as the judicious use of water and fertilisers. This leads to reduced waste, increased crop yields, and ultimately higher profits for farmers. Additionally, technology plays a significant role in mechanisation, encompassing the use of modern agricultural implements that multitask while minimising soil impact (McFadden et al., 2023). Addressing major challenges such as crop residue management through environmentally friendly technological methods not only enhances efficiency and productivity but also reduces the physical labor required, transforming farming into a less strenuous occupation.

In statistics, sampling is concerned with the selection of a subset of individuals from within a statistical population to estimate characteristics of the whole population. Two advantages of sampling are that the cost is lower and data collection is faster than measuring the entire population. Each observation measures one or more properties (such as weight, location, colour) of observable bodies distinguished as independent objects or individuals. In survey sampling, weights can be applied to the data to adjust for the sample design, particularly stratified sampling. Results from probability theory and statistical theory are employed to guide the practice. In business and medical research, sampling is widely used for gathering information about a population. Acceptance sampling is used to determine if a production lot of material meets the governing specifications.

11.1. Introduction

Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) is a powerful soft computing technique that integrates elements of fuzzy logic and cognitive mapping to model complex systems. It allows for the representation of causal relationships between variables in an interpretable and flexible manner, making it particularly valuable for analyzing and simulating real-world dynamic systems. FCM has its roots in cognitive science, systems thinking, and artificial intelligence, enabling researchers and practitioners to model uncertainties and interdependencies effectively (Tyrovolas et al., 2023). The approach is particularly advantageous when dealing with complex, ill-structured problems where traditional mathematical modeling techniques fall short. By capturing expert knowledge and combining it with computational techniques, FCM helps in making informed predictions and policy decisions.

It is widely applied across multiple domains, including environmental management for sustainability assessments (Özesmi and Özesmi, 2004), decision support systems in business and governance, healthcare for medical diagnostics and treatment planning (Apostolopoulos et al., 2024), and socio economic planning for policy analysis and forecasting (Gray et al., 2015). Furthermore, its adaptability has led to its increasing integration with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics, making it a promising approach for tackling contemporary challenges.

The full name of an organism technically has eight terms. For the dog it is: Eukarya, Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Carnivora, Canidae, Canis, and lupus. Notice that each name is capitalized except for species, and the genus and species names are italicized. Scientists generally refer to an organism only by its genus and species, which is its two-word scientific name, or binomial nomenclature. Therefore, the scientific name of the dog is Canis lupus. The name at each level is also a taxonomy Carnivora is the name of the taxon at the order level; Canidae is the taxon at the family level, and so forth. Organisms also have a common name that people typically use, in this case, dog. Note that the dog is additionally a subspecies: the “familiaris” in Canis lupus familiaris. Subspecies are members of the same species that are capable of mating and reproducing viable offspring, but they are separate subspecies due to geographic or behavioural isolation or other factors. Dogs, which are under the species Canis lupus familiaris, are known to have a total of 78 chromosomes (2n). The diploid genes can be classified into 38 pairs with two sex chromosomes.

Concept: Operations conducted before and after harvest are essential components of the system for producing high-quality seeds. If enough care is not taken in the initial stage, there most likely won’t be any resources left to get high-quality seed. Like this, carefully produced, high-quality seed may lose a significant percentage of its worth if post-harvest management protocols are not adhered to. Its quality is highly correlated with soundness, fullness, and homogeneity of physical characteristics (size, shape, density, colour, and appendages), in addition to mechanical planting’s simplicity and improved crop establishment. Improving the seed that has been gathered and getting it ready for secure storage till needed are accomplished through the effective and efficient process of seed processing. To increase the quality of the seed lot, the goal of seed processing must be to optimize the physical properties of the seed and the constituents of the harvested seed mass. The three main steps in seed processing are conditioning, grading, and applying protectants or enriching with nutrients. These steps are completed in compliance with established protocols and standards (McDonald and Copeland 1997; Agrawal 1996; Jorgensen and Stevens, 2004). The distinct qualities of the crops and the surroundings are taken into consideration while adjusting the machines and operations.

Concept: The preservation of viable seeds from the moment of collecting until they are needed for sowing is known as storage. Every year, a significant quantity of seeds loses their usefulness due to incorrect storage. Seeds need to be preserved and stored dry. As was previously mentioned, seed moisture content and storage temperature have the biggest effects on how long seeds last. The three main environmental elements that impact seed deterioration and loss of viability are moisture, temperature, and oxygen percentage. For over 90% of species, reducing seed moisture content (MC) to certain thresholds consistently lengthens the seed’s lifespan (Roberts 1973). These species are categorized as “orthodox” in terms of the conditions in which they should store seeds; under suitable dry, cool conditions, they typically maintain viability and germinability even after extended periods of storage. Ellis and Roberts’ improved viability equations have addressed the quantitative impacts of both drying and cooling for orthodox seeds. The life of the seed is often doubled for every 1% drop in seed moisture (when seed MC fluctuates between 5 and 14%) and every 5 oC drop in storage temperature (between 0 oC and 50 oC) (Harrington 1972). Low seed MC and low temperature are hence fundamentals of traditional seed storage. Careful regulation of these two factors is necessary to achieve optimal storage life. But most seed produced annually just has to be kept from harvest until the following planting season. Depending on the type of seed, it may or may not need to be stored at temperatures and relative humidity above room temperature. Regardless of any modifications made for unique uses, the local climate storage facility needs to have a few essential components (Barre, 1954; Wheeler and Hill, 1957).

We are faced with the dual challenges of Climate change and food insecurity irrespective of the countries and regions across the globe. Asia Pacific region is one of the most climate change vulnerable regions in the world (Prabhakar & Matsumoto, 2010) on account of its relatively higher & dense population depending on climate related sectors and living in climate change vulnerable locations. In particular, the agriculture production system is facing serious repercussions due to increasing weather vagaries since past few decades. Agriculture being highly dependent on climatic condition is like gambling at the hands of erratic rainfall or droughts leading to crop loss on a regular basis in terms of reduced yield, increased pest resurgence and lack of safety net in case of weather based disasters all of which prominently affects the small holder farm families. Indian subcontinent has been facing extreme climatic events since the past decades in form of floods, erratic rainfall, high temperature, shrinking water sources, etc. which have caused deprivation in agriculture in economic and non-economic terms. In a series of researches and studies conducted over the years; the need for enhanced adaptation research and policymaking capacity in developing Asia has been reflected. Hence, adaptation research has to take an important place at global, national and local level.

1. Introduction

The agriculture sector in Asia and the Pacific plays a vital role in the rural economy, making significant contributions to both GDP and employment. This sector serves as a cornerstone for food production, economic growth and poverty reduction in the region. Understanding the importance of farming in the region’s rural economy, as well as the need for viable farming systems particularly for smallholder farms, is essential for sustainable development.

Importance of Farming in the Rural Economy

Farming has a substantial impact on the rural economy of Asia and the Pacific. It serves as a primary source of income and livelihood for rural populations, contributing significantly to the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The agricultural sector encompasses a wide range of activities, including crop production, livestock farming, fisheries, and forestry, providing diverse opportunities for economic development.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), farming accounts for 29 percent of the region’s GDP (FAO, 2021). Breeders expect a new variety to show high performance for yield and its contributing characters along with other physiological and nutritional traits. A variety is said to be superior not only for its higher economic yield, but also for its consistent performance over a wide range of environmental conditions. But the performance of a particular variety is the resultant of its genetic constitution and the environment in which it has been grown. Particular variety may not exhibit same phenotypic performance under different environments, or different varieties may perform differently to a specific environment.

The basic cause of differences in the stability of different genotypes is the interaction effect of genotype and environment, known as genotype × environment (G × E) interaction (GEI). The term environment refers to the uncontrolled external conditions that affect expression of genes of an individual genotype such as the annual rainfall, dry spells, soil fertility gradients, waterlogging, depth and texture of soil, and photoperiod and incidence of disease or pests. However, prediction of GEI is seldom possible with available and known factors. In aquaculture practises carried out in open environments (e.g. ponds, cages and pens), natural interaction between the culture and non-culture species, where the culture species are been fed by the non-culture species (predation) can occur, causing significant economic loses (Ross, 1988). As many as thirteen different predators are considered to cause loss or damage on salmon farms in Scotland alone among which cetaceans are notable. Seals, sea lions, aquatic birds, dolphins, whales, otters, crabs, starfish, snail, snakes, rats etc are generally considered as predators (SSGA, 1990; Miron et al., 2005), but cetacean species are not notable predators within salmon farms. It is necessary to develop an environment friendly and economically feasible methods or technologies to limit the useless natural interaction. Manual chasing away or removal of predators, usage of scarecrows, anti-predatory nets, covering nets and increasing the tension of nets are some methods used to prevent predations in different aquaculture scenarios.

Acoustic Deterrent Devices (ADDs) otherwise called as Acoustic Harassment Devices (AHDs) help to prevent predation as they produce strong underwater noises (sound waves) that disturb and scare off the predators (Gordon & Northridge, 2002). AHDs are comparatively higher energy output devices than ADDs that operate at a power level of above 185 dB re 1µPa @1m. However, as the hearing threshold of different predators differ, the term “ADDs” are generally used for those that are efficient to deter the predators irrespective of their operating power levels (Götz & Janik 2010). One of the first usage of different unspecified sounds (eg: killer whale’s recorded voice) to deter predators (seals) were during the 1970s and no sounds were then found efficient in a long-term run (Anderson and Hawkins, 1988). Later through the 1980s, the precursor of modern ADDs (175-210 dB re 1uPa @1m) that emit out sound waves of frequency range (8-17 kHz), which is similar to the predator’s (seals) most sensitive hearing range were developed (Mate et al.,1987).

Tumaria wetland (29° 18' N & 78° 57'E) is a manmade wetland near Corbett Tiger Reserve, Nainital district, Uttarakhand (Figure 1). It was constructed in the year 1961 and has an average depth of 3.1 m. It was mainly used for irrigation, fish production and has been a favorite place for several migratory birds during winter season (Bhattacharjee and Bargali, 2013; Bhattacharjee,2014). Tumaria bears a humid subtropical climate; emprises hot and dry summer which commences from early October to the mid of June. The area experience wet season from the mid of June to early October and then feels the cold winter. The reservoir catchment area is 284.16 sq. km and its north area is covered with thick, reserved forest of Jim Corbett National Park (Figure 2). The infestation of Salvinia weed is one of the major problems being faced by this wetland.

The exotic free-floating weed, Giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell), belongs to Salviniaceae family and is a native of south-eastern Brazil (Forno, 1983). It is commonly known as water fern, water weed, Kariba weed or water spangle and African payal in India (Jones, 1987). During the past 50 years, it has widely extended throughout the world and has infester the areas of Australia, New Zealand, Africa, southern USA, the Indian subcontinent, south-east Asia and some Pacific islands (Thomas and Room, 1986) (Figure 3). In India, it was f irst established in the state of Kerala since early 1970s (Cook, 1976; Thomas, 1976 and 1979). This aquatic weed has invaded in various aquatic habitats, such as lakes, wetland, rivers, reservoirs and paddy fields.

Around the world, a belt of coral reefs can be seen in the tropical waters. Coral reefs are of immense importance, but due to both natural and man-made influences, they are rapidly degrading and disappearing at an alarming rate. By 2030, 90% of the reefs would be in danger if current rates of erosion are permitted to continue. It is crucial to comprehend the coral reefs' current state of health and the growing dangers to them. The study's goals are to examine management and conservation strategies and shed knowledge on the expanding issue of coral exploitation (Jhajhria, 2021).

Ultimately, their application in agriculture is to increase crop yields, improve soil health, reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and generate sustainable income for farmers. The microbial inoculant market size is expected to generate revenue of USD 24.6 billion by 2027 and is estimated to be valued at USD 12.9 billion in 2022, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% from 2022 to 2027. Connective tissues develop from the mesodermal cells of the embryo. they support and bind other tissues in the body. The muscular tissue develops from the mesoderm of the embryo and meant for movement and locomotion. Nervous tissue makes up the peripheral and the central nervous system and is responsible for initiation and transmission the nerve impulse. The tissues are biochemically composed of water, lipid, protein, ash, and carbohydrate along with other mineral and vitamins that are needed for its basic functioning. The extracellular matrix (ECM) forms a major component of connective tissue that forms layer and surrounds the cells or tissues meant for protection, signalling and communication. The protein component of ECM basically includes collagen, elastin, keratins, fibrillin, fibronectin, laminin and proteoglycans. Collagen is the major protein component of connective tissue that provides tensile strength, shape and fixes the organ in its position. Collagen is not homogenous rather consists of around 19 different types of proteins. There are around 30 variants of protein found in collagen. collagens type I and type II are respectively found in skin and bone. Most of the bacterial species are still unknown indicating that the identification and classification of bacteria is a hard task since the beginning of microbiology and consequently our knowledge about bacterial ecology is very low. Mean while the expectations about novel bacterial products are high. Therefore, bacterial identification has become a growing field of interest in microbiology. Since, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria genera include a large number of species and strains exhibiting important properties in an applied context, chiefly in the area of probiotics as food and therapeutics, an updated list of species belonging to these two genera, their phylogenetic relationships and other relevant taxonomic information are of great significance. The classification and identification of a probiotic isolate at strain level point out its typical habitat and origin. Moreover, the species, or genus name, may also indicates the strain’s safety and technical applicability for its use in probiotic products. Taxonomy helps to place a newly identified organism in a relevant group and enables the scientific communication. Further it facilitates the construction of databases that can be used for rapid identification of organisms at laboratory level easily. Thus, taxonomy of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria helps to study these organisms scientifically and allows characterizing and arranging them in an orderly manner which promote the scientific community to explore the benefits from those organisms for the betterment of mankind.

Preceding chapters discuss the essentials of probiotics, their role in maintaining gut health in combination with prebiotics and significance of systematic classification of probiotic isolates. Further, to draw an idea how probiotics function in the gut, it is essential to know the interaction of probiotics with other microorganisms in the gastrointestinal milieu - the site of their probiotic action. Knowledge in the ecology of probiotic microorganisms in host environment such as gut gives an ideal picture of their functioning manner and the factors (both host and microbial) responsible for it.

Study of microbial ecology in the gastrointestinal tract is very difficult since gut harbors highly diversified microflora that varies not only at species level but also at individual level. The diversity of gut microflora in two healthy individuals of same species may exhibit variations in their composition and it may be influenced by geodemographic factors also. In this regard, the present chapter deals with the study of ecology of Lactobacillus- most commonly used probiotic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract which in turn helps in framing selection criteria for screening of potential probiotics.

Recent studies on interaction between human and gut microflora discussed that co-evolution between microorganisms and their host have contributed for the development of a very complex microbial diversity in the gut. Highly diversified microflora in the human gut is a consequence of natural selection at two levels, top-down and bottom-up selection pressure. Hierarchy theory expounds that higher levels compel lower levels for possible organizational solutions i. e. organisms at the higher levels govern the structure or population dynamics of an ecosystem while on contrary lower levels control the structure of ecology when bottom-up level is the selection pressure. In case of interaction between human and gut microflora, being host human is at higher level in the hierarchy for selection and as mentioned above, top down selection pressure is driven by higher levels; host selects the beneficial microorganisms for functional redundancy leading to the development of a microbial community with divergent microbial divisions. Chances for lateral gene transfer also thought to influence the selection process and there by structure of the microbial community. On the other hand, competition among the members of host selected microbiota exert bottom up selection pressure resulting in the development of highly specialized genomes with functionally prominent set of genes. Natural selection at host level obviously favors functionally constant microbial communities which benefits the host with functional redundancy encoded in their genomes. Mean while bottom-up cell-level selection pressure aspire to favor niche specialization to avoid competition between the members of microbial community. In order to be a part of specialized niche, to become more potent microorganisms adapt a particular set of abiotic and biotic factors within the habitat by acquiring new sets of genes essential for their survival and thus escape the competition from decrepit microbial species.

The molecular mechanisms of probiotics are largely unknown and opens avenue for research in probiotics. Moreover, current research in probiotics and health consciousness in the public lead to an increased interest towards probiotics from the public, researchers, governmental organizations (such as the WHO/FAO) and medicine and food companies. In this chapter, application of probiotics in treating various diseases and disorders are discussed.
