Introduction
Heat treatment is the most commonly used method in the dairy industry for milk processing. Its primary objective is to eliminate pathogens and reduce spoilage-causing organisms, ensuring milk is safe for consumption and has a longer shelf life. While advanced methods like high-pressure processing, pulsed electric fields, ultrasound processing, cold plasma treatment, and ultraviolet sterilization have emerged, heat treatment remains the preferred choice due to its simplicity, reliability, and proven effectiveness. All dairy products undergo some form of heating during processing, whether through pasteurization, sub-pasteurization (e.g., for milk used in aged cheeses), or sterilization. To facilitate this, liquid heating systems such as continuous heat exchangers or jacketed tanks are widely used, typically powered by steam or steam-heated water. Consequently, steam generation boilers are a standard feature in almost all dairy processing facilities.
The Key Objectives of Heat Treatment Include
1. Elimination of harmful pathogens in milk, ensuring it is safe for consumption and protecting public health.
2. Increasing the keeping quality of milk by reducing the number of spoilage organisms.

6. Enhancing the growth of starter cultures by eliminating natural inhibitors and dissolved oxygen in milk, essential for producing cheese and fermented products.

Sterilization is a thermal process aimed at destroying all microorganisms and microbial spores in milk, ensuring the product is microbiologically safe and shelf-stable at room temperature for extended periods. It is primarily used in the production of sterilized milk and evaporated milk, with typical conditions involving heating at 116°C for 15 minutes. This process kills all microorganisms and also inactivates all milk enzymes, including plasmin, which might otherwise contribute to spoilage during storage. However, enzymes produced by psychrotrophic bacteria should not be present in raw milk, as they are highly heat-stable and may remain active even after sterilization. Sterilized milk can be stored at room temperature for longer period. Sterilization kills all microorganisms and inactivates all microbial spores that may germinate under the storage conditions of the product in the market.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) define “sterilization” in relation to milk and milk products as the process of heating the product in a sealed container continuously to at least 115°C for 15 minutes. This treatment ensures that the milk can be preserved at room temperature for a period of not less than 30 days.
In-bottle sterilised milk is a shelf-stable dairy product produced by sealing milk in glass bottles and subjecting it to high-temperature heat treatment. Typically, the milk is heated to temperatures ranging from 110°C to 121°C for 15 to 30 minutes. This process effectively destroys all vegetative microorganisms and bacterial spores, making the milk microbiologically safe and extending its shelf life up to 6–9 months without refrigeration. The heating is usually done in batch retorts or autoclaves after the milk has been bottled and sealed. Although the process ensures safety, it often leads to a slight cooked flavour and some nutritional losses, particularly in heat-sensitive vitamins such as vitamin B1 and vitamin C.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) represent legal entitlements that protect the creations of the human intellect. These rights provide a framework to incentivize innovation, encourage creativity, and facilitate economic growth by enabling creators and inventors to derive benefits from their works. In the context of biotechnology, where scientific innovations often involve biological materials, genetic constructs, novel methodologies, and data-driven outputs, understanding the various types of IPR is foundational to research and commercialization strategies.
This chapter outlines and explains the major categories of IPRs with specific relevance to biotechnology, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, plant variety protection, geographical indications, and industrial designs.
2.1 Patents – Definition, Scope, and Criteria

 2.1.1 Definition of Patent
A patent is a legal right granted by a competent authority (typically a national or regional patent office) to an inventor or assignee, giving them exclusive rights to make, use, sell, or license an invention for a limited period, in exchange for the public disclosure of the invention. It is a form of intellectual property that protects technological innovation and incentivizes research and development across sectors, especially in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and medical diagnostics.
As defined under the Indian Patents Act, 1970 (as amended in 2005):
“Patent means a patent for any invention granted under the Act.”— Section 2(1)(m), The Patents Act, 1970

Section 4.1 Patent Application Process in India
4.1.1 Introduction
India’s patent system is governed by the Patents Act, 1970, as amended by the Patents (Amendment) Acts of 1999, 2002, and 2005, and is administered by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks (CGPDTM). The Act aligns with the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, ensuring compliance with global standards. For inventions in modern biotechnology, the patent application process in India involves a rigorous examination of novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability, and statutory exclusions, particularly under Sections 3(b), 3(c), 3(d), and 3(j).
 4.1.2 Who Can Apply?
Under Section 6 of the Patents Act, a patent application in India can be filed by:
• The true and first inventor,
• An assignee of the inventor,
• A legal representative of a deceased inventor.
In the case of collaborative research or industrial research programs, both academic institutions and corporate entities can apply jointly.

8.1 Steps in Biosafety Risk Assessment
8.1.1 Introduction
Biosafety Risk Assessment is a systematic, science-based process used to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with handling biological agents, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and biotechnological products. It is central to ensuring human safety, environmental integrity, and regulatory compliance in both laboratory and field applications.
A well-conducted biosafety risk assessment enables institutions to establish appropriate biosafety levels, implement containment measures, and ensure sustainable and responsible use of biotechnological advancements.
8.1.2 Key Objectives of Biosafety Risk Assessment
• Prevent exposure of personnel to biohazards.
• Avoid environmental contamination and unintended gene flow.
• Determine containment requirements for biological agents.
• Guide institutional and national biosafety decision-making.
• Support regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations.

India has a substantial livestock population, with animal husbandry acting as a supplementary occupation for about 67% of the rural population. Unlike the commercially oriented farming systems found in Western countries, livestock rearing in India is intricately linked to rural life, where most farmers maintain a small number of animals.
Currently, India’s livestock population surpasses 535 million, which includes 192.49 million cattle, 109.85 million buffaloes, 74.26 million sheep, 148.88 million goats, 9.06 million pigs, and over 850 million poultry birds. Each year, approximately 100 million animals are slaughtered in nearly 4,000 slaughterhouses, resulting in a significant amount of by-products or offals. In tropical regions, a considerable portion of these by-products deteriorates before they can be utilized, primarily due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and infrastructure.
Enhancing profitability in the livestock sector could be realized through improved utilization of animal by-products and waste. Many slaughterhouses presently do not have sufficient facilities to collect and preserve these byproducts in a timely manner. Additionally, retrieving fallen animal carcasses from remote rural areas often presents challenges. The competitiveness of the meat industry can be bolstered by more effective use of by-products. It is estimated that by-products such as skin, pluck, head, feet, and gut can recover approximately 30% and 35% of the live animal value for goats and sheep, respectively. Thus, it is crucial to add value to significant by-products.

Blood serves as a significant byproduct within the meat industry, and the  efficient management of its collection and processing is crucial for improving profitability. The amount of blood obtained from slaughtered animals typically ranges from 5-7% of their live weight. Despite diligent efforts, a portion of blood is inevitably lost during the slaughtering process due to spillage and various other factors. To reduce these losses, several essential practices can be adopted:
1. Effective slaughterhouse design: Enhancing the layout and operational procedures within the slaughterhouse can significantly minimize spillage. This encompasses the implementation of well-structured drainage systems and collection vessels.
2. Training and protocols: It is essential to ensure that personnel are thoroughly trained in blood collection methods and strictly follow established protocols to mitigate accidental loss. This involves appropriate handling and prompt processing to prevent clotting and spoilage.
3. Technology: Allocating resources towards advanced blood collection and processing technologies can enhance operational efficiency. Automated systems facilitate the collection, filtration, and storage of blood while minimizing waste.
4. Regular maintenance: Maintaining equipment and facilities in optimal condition is vital to prevent leaks and other complications that may result in blood loss.
5. Storage and processing: After collection, blood must be processed promptly to prevent coagulation. Efficient cooling and storage practices are essential for preserving its quality and maximizing its potential for subsequent processing into products such as blood meal or plasma.
Collection of Blood
Blood may be collected directly into metal or plastic drums when animals are suspended for bleeding. In cases where the animals are slaughtered on the ground, small enamel or plastic bowls can be placed under the bleeding site to collect the blood, which can subsequently be transferred into a drum. Abstract
Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is a critical ecological process carried out by grain legumes, which form symbiotic associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, primarily Rhizobium species. This natural mechanism converts atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia, a form that plants can readily utilize, significantly enhancing soil fertility and reducing the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. The process begins with the recognition and infection of the legume roots by rhizobia, leading to the formation of specialized structures called nodules, where the bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through the enzymatic action of nitrogenase. The symbiosis between legumes and rhizobia is tightly regulated by various genetic and environmental factors, including plant signalling molecules, soil conditions, and nutrient availability. Grain legumes, such as soybeans, chickpeas, and lentils, play a vital role in sustainable agriculture by improving soil health, promoting biodiversity, and providing a protein-rich food source. Introduction
Grain legumes or pulses are a group of crops which belong to family Fabaceae, are primarily grown for their edible seeds. The common examples of grain legumes include: bean (Phaseolus spp.), lentil (Lens culinaris), chickpea (Cicer arietinum), pea (Pisum sativum), soybean (Glycine max), lupin (Lupinus spp.), broad bean (Vicia faba), igeon pea (Cajanus cajan), grass pea (Lathyrus sativus), black gram (Vigna mungo), green gram (Vigna radiata). Grain legumes can play a significant role to address future global food security, environmental sustainability, and nutritional needs. Pulses are the second most important food crop after cereals and an important source of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Pulses are popularly known as “Poor man’s meat” and “Rich man’s vegetable”. Pulses contain a high amount of protein (20-25%), which is almost double and triple of the protein content of wheat and rice, respectively and so can contribute significantly to the nutritional security of the country. Besides, they may serve the purpose of protein rich fodder and good quality green manure crop. Pulses can thrive well in low and marginal land with less external inputs. They act as erosion resisting crops because of its deep tap root
system, leafy growth, and close spacing. Pulses can also be grown as paira crop or inter-crop in different growing situations. Being a leguminous crop, it can fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of its root nodules, resulting in low requirement of external fertilizer. Keeping the importance of pulses in mind, United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) also declared 2016 as the ‘International Year of Pulses’.

Climate change, coupled with biotic and abiotic pressures, will significantly impact global food production. Despite advances in agriculture, malnutrition remains a widespread issue, affecting millions, especially in developing countries. Protein-energy malnutrition, which affects over 170 million children and women, poses a significant threat to national economic development, increasing healthcare costs and reducing productivity. One key solution to combating malnutrition lies in promoting legumes (pulses), which are nutrient-dense, protein-rich, and vital for both human and animal consumption. Pulses have been a staple in diets
for centuries, providing essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are not only beneficial for human health, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, but they also contribute to sustainable agriculture. Legumes can fix atmospheric nitrogen, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers, improving soil health, and increasing agricultural productivity. However, despite their benefits, pulse production lags behind other staple crops like cereals. With proper management, legumes could play a vital role in alleviating global hunger, particularly in developing countries. Introduction
Climate change has emerged as a vital worldwide concern in contemporary times. It is an incontrovertible fact that the climate has changed in the past, is currently experiencing changes, and will persist in changing irrespective of the extent of mitigation efforts invested. Defined as a substantial shift in weather patterns over a period ranging from a few decades to millions of years, climate change is a phenomenon of critical importance that commands our attention and action. Fisheries and aquaculture are becoming a global industry in terms of food production and employment- enerating sectors. Millions of people in India rely on fisheries for a living, either directly or indirectly, as subsistence fisheries, typically located at the bottom of the economic pyramid, with lower earnings, disorganised jobs, and greater socioeconomic risk (Dutta et al., 2007). The fisheries sector contributes 1.03 per cent of the Indian GDP. Climate change badly hampered the food production sector, the fisheries sector is also not untouched due to its dependency on local weather and climate parameters (Temperature, Precipitation, humidity etc.). In its third assessment report, which was released in 2001, the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came to the conclusion that new or altered insect pest incidence and decreased crop yields in most tropical and sub-tropical regions would disproportionately affect the poorest nations (IPCC, 2001). To meet the food needs of a growing population in the face of climate change, climate-smart aquaculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to improving technological, policy, and investment conditions to promote sustainable agricultural development for food security (FAO, 2015).

Abstract
Food insecurity and malnutrition are on the rise globally, impacting millions, especially in rural regions where extreme poverty and food insecurity are deeply rooted. Vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected. Producing foo  that meets dietary needs and ensuring its availability in the future is essential for sustainable development and food sustainability. Addressing the growing global food security concerns and supporting the increasing population requires the continual expansion of plant-based proteins’ significance. Legumes are excellent sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Legumes, with their high dietary fiber and low-fat content, help maintain body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, and provide important vitamins like folate, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and niacin (B3). Additionally, pulses contain various phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, phytates, lectins, tannins, saponins, oxalates, enzyme inhibitors, phytosterols, and antimicrobial peptides, which offer numerous potential health benefits. These phytochemicals exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-ulcerative properties. Incorporating legumes into agricultural systems can foster more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices. In developing countries, legumes are often used to supplement cereals or starchy foods to combat protein-energy malnutrition, as animal proteins tend to be expensive in these regions.

Abstract
India shares one fourth of global annual grain legume production and is also largest consumer of it. Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint on agricultural production systems and cause damage to cropped and non-cropped lands. They reduce crop yield and degrade the quality of the produce, besides raising the cost of production. The grain legumesare commonly grown under rainfed/dry land conditions and hence do not receive the best management practices that are required for maximization of crop productivity. Among various production inputs, weed management was found to be the most important one contributing about 31% in pigeon pea, 110% in urdbean and 60 % in mungbean towards total productivity. Effective weed management in grain legumes is essential for optimizing
crop yield and quality. This process involves a multi-faceted approach that integrates cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods to address the challenges posed by diverse weed species and varying environmental conditions. Traditional single-method approaches often fall short due to the complexity and variability of weed problems like development of resistance in weeds. Therefore, an integrated weed management approach becomes effective, combining timely interventions with adaptive strategies to manage weed competition throughout the growing season. This approach not only enhances crop competitiveness and yield but also offers economic and environmental benefits by reducing reliance on broad-spectrum herbicides and promoting sustainable practices. of weed management strategies are crucial to effectively tackle evolving weed populations and changing conditions, ensuring long-term success in grain legume cultivation.

Introduction
Aquaculture is one of the food-producing industries with the fastest rate of growth in the world and is widely recognized for its substantial contributions to food security, revenue production, and poverty alleviation (Subhasinghe, 2003). The production of aquaculture has increased dramatically during the last 30 years, from less than 20 million tonnes in the early 1990s to 178.9 million tonnes in 2022. The aquaculture industry reported an average growth rate of 6.7% per year globally from 1990 to 2020 (FAO, 2022). In 2020-22, the global annual per capita fish consumption was 20.4 kg (FAO, 2022). In addition, 58.5 million people were engaged in this sector worldwide for their livelihood. Many new approaches and technologies have been developed to increase the production. However, aquaculture faces significant challenges, including environmental quality, quality seed availability, and disease management (Sitcha et al., 2020; Oglend, 2020). To address these issues, the aquaculture industry adopts new scientific and technological advancements. Among the recent advancements in science, nanotechnology is fast emerging as a novel tool for the next generation of aquaculture and fisheries development. Nanotechnology is rapidly becoming a new tool for the growth of aquaculture and fisheries in the next generation, among other recent scientific breakthroughs
(Shah et al., 2020).

Introduction
Aquaculture has significantly contributed to the increase in global fish production. However, the domestication of only a limited number of species for intensive aquaculture has been achieved in recent decades. A primary challenge in the domestication and sustainable culture of candidate species lies in the standardization of induced breeding techniques. Controlled reproduction in captivity remains suboptimal for many commercially important aquaculture species. In captivity, females of several species often fail to complete oocyte maturation (Corriero et al., 2021), while males exhibit inadequate milt production (Zohar et al., 1989; Peter et al., 1993). Hormonal manipulation and environmental stimulation are considered effective approaches to overcome these challenges and facilitate captive maturation for induced breeding.
Several hormone analogues, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), have been developed into commercial formulations like Ovaprim™, Ovatide™, and Wova-FH™, which target the brain-pituitarygonad (BPG) axis. However, these hormones have shown limited efficacy in the induced breeding of some commercially important species, including catfish. Recent studies suggest that neurohypophysial nonapeptide hormones also play a crucial role in modulating the GnRH– onadotropin (GTH)–steroid hormone pathway (Joy and Chaube, 2015). In mammals, nonapeptides include oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP), which are homologous to isotocin (IT) and vasotocin (VT) in teleost fish. These nonapeptides, consisting of nine amino acids, are classified as basic (VT and VP) or neutral (OT and IT), depending on the amino acid at the eighth position. For example, VP has arginine, whereas OT has leucine at this position (Stoop, 2012).
In Heteropneustes fossilis, a novel neuropeptide gene, savetocin, has been identified, distinguished from IT by the substitution of valine for isoleucine at the eighth position. Nonapeptides also have homologues in other organisms, such as annetocin in worms and insects, inotocin in mollusks, and conopressin in leeches and Lymnaea stagnalis. Among vertebrates, lungfish, amphibians,
reptiles, and birds produce mesotocin and vasotocin, whereas marsupials secrete oxytocin and phenypressin (Darlison and Richter, 1999). These findings highlight the diversity and evolutionary significance of nonapeptides,
as well as their potential as novel targets for improving induced breeding in
aquaculture species.

Introduction
Global aquaculture plays a significant role in ensuring food security both directly (by making food more accessible and available) and indirectly (by promoting economic growth). Since the 1980s, aquaculture production has increased, and it has been suggested that there is theoretically enormous potential for further growth. FAO came to the conclusion that the industry should acknowledge the pertinent environmental and social issues as it continues to grow, intensify, and diversify. Climate change, and more especially the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur along food supply chains, is one of the major environmental (and social) problems. We must comprehend how aquaculture contributes to global GHG emissions and how to reduce them in order to support its sustainable growth (FAO, 2019).
What are Green House Gases?
Heat-trapping gases in the earth’s atmosphere are referred to as greenhouse gases, or GHGs. Maintaining a temperature on Earth that is conducive to life depends on greenhouse gases. The average temperature on Earth would be around -20°C if the greenhouse effect didn’t exist. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, human activity has raised the atmospheric quantities
of greenhouse gases. The major GHG’s emitted into the earth’s atmosphere is given in Fig. 1.

Introduction
Temperature regulation is a critical physiological process that allows animals and birds to maintain homeostasis in varying environmental conditions. Thermoregulation involves a complex interplay of behavioral, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms that ensure the body temperature of these animals remains within a narrow, optimal range. This process is vital for maintaining metabolic functions, health, and productivity, particularly in agricultural settings where animals are often exposed to temperature extremes.In farm animals such as cattle, sheep, and pigs, thermoregulation is primarily managed through a combination of heat production, heat dissipation, and behavioral adaptations. Endothermic animals generate heat internally through metabolic processes, particularly in the muscles and liver. This heat is distributed throughout the body via the circulatory system. When ambient temperatures rise, farm animals activate various cooling mechanisms to prevent hyperthermia. These mechanisms include increased respiratory rates (panting), sweating (in species like cattle and horses), and vasodilation, where blood vessels near the skin surface expand to dissipate heat. Conversely, in cold environments, animals reduce heat loss by vasoconstriction, piloerection (raising of hair or fur), and seeking shelter or huddling together. Behavioral adaptations, such as seeking shade or water, also play a crucial role in temperature regulation.In poultry, thermoregulation is equally important but is managed differently due to their unique physiology. Birds lack sweat glands and have a higher metabolic rate compared to mammals, which means they rely more heavily on respiratory evaporative cooling and behavioral adaptations. Poultry regulate their body temperature by panting, which increases evaporative heat loss from the respiratory tract. Additionally, birds adjust their posture, such as spreading their wings or ruffling feathers, to enhance heat dissipation. A 2001 study revealed that over 90 percent of fish and water samples collected from various streams contained traces of one or more pesticides (Kole et al., 2001).

SCPs obtained from the algae, bacteria, fungi, and yeast often contain high protein content and superior amino acid profiles. The presence of essential fatty acids and additional bioactive compounds further support their role as adequate replacements for the current protein sources. Among those, mycoproteins are currently a major area of interest due to their favourable nutritional profile, higher growth rates and efficient production process. These have the ability to use a variety of agricultural and industrial by-products as their feedstocks. PEKILO® protein is such a commercial mycoprotein obtained from carbohydrates containing lignocellulosic wastes from forestry by-products. It was produced from the fungal species Paecilomyces variotii from the substrates such as spent sulphite liquor and molasses through a continuous fermentation process. Pekilo protein consists of 60 to 70% crude protein content, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, β-glucans and nucleotides. Its high digestibility and amino acid content make it a suitable protein source for the aquafeed industry. Recent research studies suggest that pekilo protein has a high potential as a non-conventional protein source in commercial salmon and shrimp feeds. PIT tagging stands out due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with various aquatic environments. PIT tags offer a long-term solution with less interference than external tags, which are more likely to be lost or damaged. Technological advancements have refined PIT tagging, allowing its application even in small-bodied fish, thus broadening its utility in ecological and genetic studies. These tags also play a pivotal role in reducing inbreeding in hatcheries by maintaining precise genetic records. Despite the proven benefits, PIT tagging requires careful consideration of fish species, size, and environmental factors to optimize tag retention and ensure minimal stress. Advancements in tagging techniques, such as improved surgical techniques and new equipment for tag implantation further increase the dependability of this technology. Studies confirm that PIT tagging has negligible effects on fish physiology and behaviour, making it an indispensable tool in aquaculture research and management. The growing demand for fish products, recognized for their nutritional composition and contribution to a healthy diet, has led to a significant increase in seafood processing waste, including shells, bones, skins, and other by-products. This chapter explores the potential of utilizing these seafood by-products to develop edible films and coatings, aligning with circular bio economy principles of, resource efficiency, sustainability and waste reduction. Edible films and coatings derived from seafood waste, such as chitosan, proteins, gelatin etc. offer various advantages, which include extention of the shelf life of products, preserving sensory qualities (aroma, taste, and appearance), and reducing the need for synthetic packaging materials. These biodegradable films also demonstrate antimicrobial, antioxidant, and mould-inhibiting properties, which contribute to improving food quality and safety. However, despite the benefits, challenges remain in terms of the physical properties of these films, including water resistance, mechanical strength, and consumer acceptance. The commercial application of these biopolymer-based materials is still limited by these issues, as well as by the complexities involved in scaling up production processes. To optimise the qualities of edible films and coatings made from seafood waste, more research is essential, particularly through the development of composite materials and innovative gelling systems. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process of evaluating the likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic, cultural and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse.
UNEP defines Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as a tool used to identify the environmental, social and economic impacts of a project prior to decision-making. It aims to predict environmental impacts at an early stage in project planning and design, find ways and means to reduce adverse impacts, shape projects to suit the local environment and present the predictions and
options to decision-makers.
Environment Impact Assessment in India is statutorily backed by the Environment Protection Act, 1986 which contains various provisions on EIA methodology and process.

19.1 Introduction
Mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori, is affected by a number of diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. These illnesses are recognized to occur in practically every region where silkworms are raised in the world seriously harming the harvest of silkworm cocoons. Several actions have been proposed as a means of preventing and managing the illnesses, but none of them had shown signs of foolproof with the outcome that one must consistently be cautious to eradicate the core infection’s source in addition to avoiding crossinfection. Additionally, care has to be taken in order to ensure that they are not exposed to stressful circumstances such as low temperature and inadequate nourishment, poor ventilation, and humidity which could lead them easily susceptible to various diseases.
19.2 Diseases of Mulberry Silkworm and Their Control
19.2.1 Protozoan Diseases
The protozoa that harm silkworms are the parasitic ones from the genera Nosema, Pleistophora, and Thelohania and class Microsporidia. In addition to this, reports of Leptomonas and Trypanosoma infections in the silkworm
Bombyx mori L. have been made. However, the pebrine disease is the main protozoan illness of the silkworm. It is also known as ‘pepper disease’ because of the development of areas of black pepper after infection.

Cereal grains and cereal by-products
The appropriate nutrition of livestock necessitates the inclusion of a specific proportion of cereals and their byproducts. For poultry and swine, cereals constitute the primary element of their daily dietary intake. Consequently, there exists a direct competition for these cereal resources between livestock and humans. Specifically, only 2% of rice and wheat, 5% of sorghum, 10% of barley and maize, and 50% of bajra and ragi are allocated for animal feed.
Cereals belong to the Gramineae family and are classified as annual plants (Khariff). These grains are primarily composed of carbohydrates, with starch being the predominant component of their dry matter, concentrated in the endosperm. Cereal grains are abundant in TDN and net energy, making them highly palatable to livestock. The DCP content ranges from 7% to 10%, while TDN levels fall between 70% and 80% for ruminants. In non-ruminants, such as pigs and poultry, these energy-rich grains can be incorporated into their diets at proportions of approximately 50% to 70%.
Structure of a grain: Grain kernels are referred to as caryopses. Those grains that possess husks, such as oats, barley and rice, are classified as covered caryopses, while grains that lack husks, including maize, wheat, rye, and sorghum, are termed naked caryopses. Each kernel, excluding the husk, consists of two primary components: the pericarp and the seed.
Pericarp: This structure is composed of two distinct layers. The outer layer, which includes the epidermis and hydroderm, is collectively known as the beeswing. The inner layer of the pericarp is characterized by the presence of cross cells and tube cells.
Seed: The seed is further divided into four components: the seed coat, hyaline layer, endosperm, and germ (embryo). When the grain undergoes processing that removes both the germ and the starch endosperm, the remaining parts of the seed along with the pericarp are referred to as bran.

Plants and many agro-industrial by-products incorporated into livestock diets may harbor a range of anti-nutritional compounds. These substances can adversely affect optimal nutrition by deactivating specific nutrients, obstructing the digestive process, or diminishing the metabolic efficiency of feed, ultimately leading to negative consequences for animal health and productivity. The naturally occurring plant compounds found in feed that disrupt feed utilization (FCR), lower production levels, and compromise animal health are referred to as anti-nutritional factors. Additionally, natural toxicants present in feed can hinder the absorption and utilization of nutrients in livestock. Therefore, it is essential to implement effective detoxification methods for these feed materials to mitigate toxic effects and ensure their safe incorporation into animal diets. A foundational understanding of these toxicants is crucial prior to undertaking detoxification and subsequent use in livestock feeding.
Natural toxicants can be categorized based on their chemical properties into several groups: Proteins, Glycosides, Phenols, and Miscellaneous toxicants. The chemical characteristics, pathogenic effects, and detoxification strategies for these compounds are briefly outlined below.
Proteins
1. Protease inhibitors: Protease inhibitors are prevalent throughout the plant kingdom, particularly in the seeds of many cultivated legumes. These inhibitors possess the capability to obstruct the function of proteolytic enzymes in the gastrointestinal systems of animals. Specifically, trypsin inhibitors form irreversible complexes with trypsin, rendering the enzyme unable to fulfill its role in protein digestion. This interaction prompts the intestine to secrete cholecystokinin, which in turn stimulates pancreatic enlargement. The presence of trypsin inhibitors in raw soybean can hinder the availability of methionine, leading to adverse effects in young chickens fed raw soybean meal,
including pancreatic hypertrophy, reduced growth rates, gallbladder contraction and increased bile acid excretion, similar to observations in other monogastric animals. In contrast, ruminants can effectively utilize untreated leguminous seeds. Consequently, the amino acids that would typically be released by trypsin are not reabsorbed, leading to their loss when trypsin interacts with these inhibitors. These substances, which are proteinaceous in nature, hinder the activity of certain digestive enzymes, ultimately impairing the growth and performance of non-ruminant animals. High concentrations of protease inhibitors are found in various leguminous seeds, such as soybean, kidney bean and mung bean. There are two primary types of protease inhibitors: a) Kunitz inhibitors, which possess a single active site that binds exclusively to trypsin and b) Bowman-Birk inhibitors, which contain two active sites that can bind both trypsin and chymotrypsin, thereby inhibiting both enzymes. Detoxification: These protease inhibitors are primarily heat-sensitive and appropriate heat treatment of leguminous seeds-such as roasting, toasting, popping, autoclaving (at 120°C and 15 lbs psi for 20 minutes), and cooking-can effectively inactivate them. It is important to avoid overheating during these processes.

a) Pica
Pica is a condition characterized by the persistent ingestion of non-nutritive substances such as soil, rocks, plastic, cloth, or other inappropriate materials. While commonly observed in humans, pica is also prevalent in animals, including livestock, domestic pets, and wildlife. It is often a sign of underlying health, environmental, or nutritional issues. Understanding the causes, implications, and management of pica is crucial for animal welfare and productivity.

The aetiology of pica in animals is multifaceted and can be broadly categorized into nutritional, medical, behavioural, and environmental factors.

Livestock also contribute to ecological health through regulated grazing, pest management, and the breakdown of organic residues.
Animals such as cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, backyard poultry, and fish are effectively integrated into the NF system to form a cohesive and regenerative agro-ecosystem. These animals enhance crop systems by providing organic inputs while simultaneously benefiting from pesticide-free fodder and farm-generated feed, leading to healthier livestock and improved quality of dairy, eggs, and meat.
This interdependent model reduces the need for external feed inputs, enhances natural animal wellness, and raises farm income, particularly for smallholders. Natural farming promotes the use of native breeds that thrive in local conditions with minimal intervention.
Ultimately, integrating livestock within natural farming is not just beneficial— it is vital for establishing robust, regenerative farm systems. This synergy between animals and crops supports ecological sustainability, strengthens food systems, and uplifts rural communities.
