Introduction

Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is the largest edible fruit in the world. It is a seasonal fruit found in almost all the humid tropical regions of the world. It is very popular all over India and is believed to be of Indian origin. Flesh of jackfruit is starchy and fibrous and is a source of dietary fiber. Varieties are distinguished according to characteristics of the fruit’s flesh. In Kerala, two varieties of jackfruit predominate: varikka and koozha. Varikka has a slightly hard inner flesh when ripe, while the inner flesh of ripe koozha fruit is very soft and almost dissolving. Strong aroma of the fruit accounts popularity of its processed products. Each year, approximately 30-50% of the total harvested fruit is spoiled because of lack of post-harvest processing in India

Jackfruit has more protein, calcium, thiamine, riboflavin and carotene than banana. Edible bulbs of ripe jackfruit are consumed for their fine taste and pleasant aroma. The fibre content helps to protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time as well as binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon. Fresh fruit has small amounts of carotenoid and flavonoid pigments such as ß carotene, xanthin, lutein and cryptoxanthin-ß. Together, these compounds play vital roles in antioxidant and vision functions.

The way technology is evolving, and the way it is changing our ways of living, why should we not be optimistic about technology. But then optimism comes tagged with pessimism. We aim for unfathomable optimum optimism. Technology is like water. It finds its open spaces. If it fills the available spaces more than it should, there is flood.

Future engineers and technologists are expected to appreciate, more than before, the human dimensions of technology. They are expected to have a grasp of the global issues. There is a need to understand the nuances of working in a culturally diverse space. According to some experts, good engineering designs should not be deprived of the benefits of a broad spectrum of life experiences, as adequate familiarisation with societal demands is essential for practical technological literacy.

Future engineers need to be better equipped to deal with people of diverse backgrounds, such as from social sciences, management, and communication. Some of the grand challenges that are enlisted, from an engineer’s point of view, are environment protection, hunger, energy and controlling the spread of the diseases. We need developers of responsible technologies and products.

We need managers to manage things, and at the same time we need adequate number of things to manage. There is a need to build faith in the public that engineers and technologists are sensitive to their concerns. One of the biggest responsibilities of the engineers and technologists is to keep themselves updated about professional developments and practices.

Countries, not only want exceptional scientists and engineers, but also people who are temperamentally innovators, and think they fit into their country’s core values. Many would say, prepare young minds and nurture future innovators.

Before carry out any ethnobotanical work, first define the goal of the assignment or study before selecting the approach, which best suits the interests, budget and schedule. Most of the methods used in ethnobotanical studies are time taking and costly because several field trips are required in several seasons for covering different ritual occasions and seasonal farming activities which are continue for a number of years for completion of an assignment. In this way, an assignment may be very long or short as per selection approach of an ethnobotanist. Long-term assignment or projects may be continue for several years and they require sufficient financial input. When sufficient financial add and time does not available to accomplished long term assignments, in that case a Rapid Ethnobotanical Appraisal (REA) can be done.

Malvaceae

The family Malvaceae is also known as Mallow family, characterised by mainly shrubs and herbs. The plants of this family frequent have stellate trichomes, persistant sepals, epicalyx present, stamens numerous and monadelphous, anthers monothecous, carpels 5 or more.

Abroma angusta (Devil’s Cotton)

Paste of the leaf is applied to heal wounds and to relieve joint pain or back pain. Young shoots are used as food. Roots are used to cure itching.

Abutilon indicum (Kanghi)

The whole plant is used to make brooms. Plant also has medicinal value and its sap is used against ulcer, leprosy, piles, dysentery and fever.

2.1 Introduction

In a fiber optic sensor the heart of the sensor is an optical fiber. An optical fiber in its simplest form is a cylindrical symmetric structure consisting of a central ‘core’ glass/plastic of uniform refractive index and of diameter 4-600 µm. It is surrounded by a ‘cladding’ glass/plastic of slightly lower refractive index. To provide the mechanical and environmental protection to the fiber, the cladding is covered with an external plastic coating (seeFig. 2.1). The light in the fiber propagates by bouncing back and forth from the core-cladding interface. The design of the fiber optic sensor depends critically on the choice of optical fiber. Telecommunication fibers are inexpensive but may not be the right choice for sensors. Some of the fiber optic sensors dictate the use of application-specific optical fibers. In this chapter we shall first describe ray analysis for the light propagation in the fiber. The modes propagation, numerical aperture of the fiber, fiber characteristics and different kinds of optical fibers used for sensing will be described later.

Introduction

The acute food shortage was a major challenge in confronting the development of the country after independence with rapidly increasing population. Massive financial assistance of credit and subsidy under various rural development programmes unveiled by government could not yield desired impact on poverty and unemployment. The benefits of farm research did not reach the resource poor farmers. Several researchers indicated that the devolution of democratic decision-making at the village level was lacking.

The major task of bridging the gap between farmers and the scientific knowledge is in the hands of extension workers who should act as “conveyer belts” in communicating appropriate scientific knowledge and skills already available to the farmer in a smooth and acceptable form and in securing the adoption of these improved techniques. They must assess the intentions prevailing in the minds of rural people, their relationships and interactions, their groups, their institutions, their organizations and the culture, which influence the behaviour at large. They need to understand their motives, reactions, receptivity to new ideas, hidden resources of rural people and social and cultural obstacles prevailing in the society with their active participation.

To elucidate the hidden facts from the well-knit social, cultural and behavioral patterns, a family of approach known as “Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA)” techniques is widely employed to understand the existing farming situations, problems, and opportunities in the rural areas. PRA techniques can also be used in evaluation and impact assessment in agricultural and allied enterprises and projects that can indicate the success and failure to plan for better future.

INTRODUCTION

In the world of flower, together with lilies, gladioli, begonias; the dahlias are one of the most important and popular flowering bulbs. With the blast of different colours, shape and sizes, dahlias bring life and beauty back to the landscape in late summer and autumn. The diversity of dahlias allows their usage in many different aspects due to huge range of flower types available and fairly easy cultivation.

In modern garden, dahlias are extensively used for exhibition, garden display and decoration. It can be grown in any form in the garden; in beds, in borders or even in mixed borders alongwith other plants. It grows well in pots also. For border purpose dwarf growing type are preferred while in pots usually large flowering dahlias are grown. The long stemmed flowers of various forms and colours are used in flower arrangement. Dahlias make excellent cut flowers, which typically last about a week in the house and are also used in making garlands.

The tubers of dahlias contain appreciable amount of insulin and fructose and small quantities of phytin and benzoic acid which are of medicinal and nutritional value. Flavanone 3-hydroxylase, which catalyses the conversion of flavanones to dihydro flavonols, was detected in flower extracts of cyanic strains of dahlia.

INTRODUCTION

Narcissus is a hardy or tender herbaceous perennial, growing from bulbs and seeds. In India it is commonly called Nargis. The splendid yellow and white flowers of the narcissus alone could make April and May month of delightful sweetness in the garden. Shakespeare mentioned Narcissus again and again as common symbol of the English spring. Narcissus are highly suitable for rowin in beds ots under the deciduous trees, window garden, etc. They are very good cut flower and are sold in the market. The bulbs of the European species are used in folk medicine as these are believed to possess the purgative, dermal and depurative properties. Few species are used for extraction of essential oil in France. There is often confusion as to whether the name narcissus or daffodil should be used. Popular thought attached the former name to the sweet scented tazetta or poet narcissus and the latter to the small wild Lent Lily which is still to be found massed in the wood and open pastures. Today daffodil usually refers to long trumpet and large flowered garden forms while, all the rest are narcissus. In the simplest words, the species of this are called narcissi, although the trumpets, which have trumpet (corona or cup) as long as or longer than the surrounding petals are usually called daffodils.

Tulips are one of the most popular and widely grown flowering plant. Tulip is a main stay of spring gardens providing abundant flowers in vivid and vibrant spectrum and colours. It is first among bulbous ornamentals due to its attractive colours and exquisite flowers. Tulip is the national flower of Turkey and tulip motifs feature prominently in Turkish folk arts. The first European cultivation of the tulips as a garden flower occurred in the Netherlands in sixteenth century. In the following century, the early enthusiasm for the new flowers triggered a speculative frenzy now known as tulipomania. The Netherlands and tulips are still associated with one other. Tulip festivals are held in the Netherlands and in North America every May. A number of bewitching cultivars grown to perfection in a large variety of delicate and brilliant shades have developed tulip cultivation into a great bulb growing industry. Tulips are not only widely cultivated for cut flower production world wide but also grown for pot culture, in beds, borders, formal and informal location. They are also suitable for growing in orchards, lawns, rockeries and wild gardens.

The word tulip industry is dominated by the Dutch tulip growers. There is 10,000 hectare of tulip bulbs grown in the Netherlands. About 70 per cent of tulip bulbs cultivated are for forcing for flowers with 30 per cent for pre packs for gardens. The world market for bulbs has been buoyant for the past ten years. Production has been increasing at the rate of 6-8 per cent per annum and the market has expanded in line with this growth. In the Netherlands, three quarters of the total bulbs produced are exported, with the highest percentage going to the United State followed by Germany. In India, tulips are gaining popularity among the flower growers owing to congenial climate in hilly areas. Particularly in Kashmir valley, production of cut flower is increasing. Some area has been increased in Himachal Pradesh. It can also be grown successfully in other hilly parts of the country like Uttaranchal between 1300 to 3000 metre above mean sea level.

Abstract

The conventional methods of pathogen identification have often depended on identification of disease symptoms, isolation and culturing of the organisms, and identification by morphology and biochemical tests. The major limitations of these culture based morphological approaches, however, are the reliance on the ability of the organism to be cultured, the time consuming nature and requirement of extensive taxonomic expertise. Furthermore, diagnosis of plant diseases can be even more difficult with asymptomatically infected propagative materials such as tree grafting stocks or potato tubers. The use of molecular methods can circumvent many of these shortcomings. Accordingly, there have been significant developments in the area of molecular detection of plant pathogens in the last three decades. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which revolutionised molecular diagnostics and biological sciences. In the last decade the range of targets that can be diagnosed using diagnostic PCR have grown tremendously. The very flexibility and application specific variations in the basic theme of the system have allowed the development of many PCR variants adapted to wide range of applications. Furthermore, diagnostic PCR has been greatly improved by the introduction of the second generation PCR, known as the Real time PCR where closed-tube fluorescence detection and quantification during PCR amplification (in real time) is possible eliminating the need for laborious post-PCR sample processing steps which greatly reduces the risk of carryover contamination. Using Real Time PCR, it is possible not only to detect the presence or absence ofthe target pathogen, but it is also possible to quantify the amount present in the sample allowing the quantitative assessment of the number of the pathogen in the sample. Enumerating the pathogen upon detection is crucial to estimate the potential risks with respect to disease development and provides a useful basis for diseases management decisions. Crops can be attacked by many pathogens which, in addition, often occur in complexes. Therefore, many disease diagnostic applications require simultaneous detection and quantification of several targets. Methodological limitations, however, are in many cases the reason for developing simplex or assays designed for only few targets. The DNA Microarray technology, originally designed to study gene expression and generate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profiles, is currently a new and emerging pathogen diagnostic technology, which in theory, offers a platform for unlimited multiplexing capability. It is viewed as a technology that fundamentally alters molecular diagnostics. The fast growing databases generated by genomics and biosystematics research provides unique opportunity for the design of more versatile, high-throughput, sensitive and specific molecular assays which will address the major limitations of the current technologies and benefit plant pathology.

Abstract

Health-conscious consumers are increasingly seeking functional foods in an effort to control their own health and well-being. The field of functional foods, however, is in its infancy. Claims about health benefits of functional foods must be based on sound scientific criteria. A number of factors complicate the establishment of a strong scientific foundation. These factors include the complexity of the food substance, effects on the food, compensatory metabolic changes that may occur with dietary changes, and, lack of surrogate markers of disease development. Additional research is necessary to substantiate the potential health benefits of those foods for which the diet-health relationships are not sufficiently scientifically validated. Research into functional foods will not advance public health unless the benefits of the foods are effectively communicated to the consumer. Finally, those foods whose health benefits are supported by sufficient scientific substantiation have the potential to be an increasingly important component of a healthy lifestyle and to be beneficial to the public and the food industry. Mounting evidence supports the observation that functional foods containing physiologically-active components, either from plant or animal sources, may enhance health. It should be stressed, however, that functional foods are not a magic bullet or universal panacea for poor health habits. There are no “good” or “bad” foods, but there are good or bad diets. Emphasis must be placed on over-all dietary pattern, which follows the current Dietary Guidelines, and is plant-based, high in fiber, low in animal fat, and contains 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Introduction

Wide ranging Indian climatic conditions are well suited for boosting production of a variety of horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, flower/ornamental/medicinal and aromatic crops) which presently hold an important position in the global scenario. Development was at a very low ebb till the Third Five-Year Plan and increased significantly since the Seventh Five Year Plan (Rs.10,000 millions plan outlay). Government of India established National Horticultural Board (NHB) in 1984 and Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in 1986 to facilitate its larger development. The outlay is expected to increase even more in the Tenth Plan. Significant progress has been made in area expansion of different horticultural crops resulting in higher production. Besides, use of modern technologies has also brought about improvement in productivity. More than 50 per cent increase in production is seen in many of the horticulture crops during last one decade.

The efficient planning and implementation of different developmental programs on horticultural crops depends on production parameters like soil suitability, varietals dominance, marketable surplus, marketing channels, post harvest handling practices, cost of cultivation and market availability for sustained production. In addition, information on latest technologies developed by various research organizations on horticultural improvement, production, protection and post-harvest technologies are needed to be collected and made available to the scientists, planners and managers working in the related fields. But the available information on this aspect is scattered and the database is too weak to provide adequate support for developmental strategies. The digitization of comprehensive database on horticultural crops will definitely enhance the pace of increasing the area, production, productivity and promoting industry of horticultural crops that have taken lead in the new millennium with reference to nutritional quality of food and export potential. A strong, well-knit database to support need-based, market-driven and cost-effective horticultural development is imperative. Therefore, under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) a Mission Mode Sub-project on “Integrated National Agricultural Resources Information System (INARIS)” has been taken up to evolve a comprehensive computerized data management system on various agricultural resources like crops, animals, fishes and natural resources by harnessing RDBMS and GIS. The Co-operating Center at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore has developed the “Horticultural Resources Information System” with the objectives of (i) integrating existing databases in horticulture, (ii) designing and developing a comprehensive database in horticulture and (iii) developing resource maps of major horticultural crops in the country by integrating attribute and spatial data through GIS. In addition to simple storage and retrieval it will include other functions such as manipulation and dissemination of information to various users. This database will be integrated with 13 other Co-operating Centers dealing with different agricultural resources through a virtual private network (VPN). The Lead Center at Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi provide warehouse facility with a capability to analyze the data variously and provide report as cubes, tables and graphs to form a national database to cater to the needs of the users through a website. The facility of retrieving information as value-added maps using GIS will also be built in.

Introduction

The countries of Asia and the Pacific region accounts for nearly two-thirds of the chronically poor and undernourished in the world. FAO estimates indicate that, by 2010, Asia will still account for about one-half of the world’s malnourished population (FAO 2000). In Asia, poverty has mainly been rural phenomenon and nearly three-fourth of the poor live in rural areas, with large majority of them dependent on natural resources for employment and income. South Asia, which had a poverty incidence of 43 percent (or about 520 million people), contributed about 40 percent of the world’s poor. Development of natural resources thus offers a potentially enormous means of poverty reduction.

In developing countries poverty and environmental deterioration are often viable in proximity to each other, and have led many to infer that a two-way causality exists between human and environmental degradation. Environmental degradation usually occurs when production and consumption activities of growing population irreversibly weaken nature’s recycling capabilities. These economic activities are also attributed to the development of markets, the advent of modern technology, and the spatial integration of inaccessible areas to market systems. In many developing countries, however, environmental degradation such as soil erosion, deforestation and pollution are most visible around poor settlements, leading some policy makers to highlight the direct links between poverty and the environment.

One has to recognize that both poverty and the environment are descriptions of states of human and natural resource attributes and cannot be reduced to simple one-dimensional cause-effect relationships. Apart from conceptual difficulties in modeling linkages, another handicap has been the absence of adequate or reliable data sets on poverty and environment characteristics. The challenge for operational research is exploring how circumstantial evidence and inductive logic can be used to explain the nature of interactions between the two states. Based on nationwide wasteland statistics vis-à-vis state and district wise poverty estimates available with the concerned agencies, this study is one such attempt, and evaluates the incidence of poverty with the backdrop of natural resources degradation and role of institutional interventions with illustrations from India.

This chapter documents shoreline changes of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka State for the period between 1967 and 2005 studied by comparing the SOI topographic maps with IRS-1C/1D LISS-III satellite imageries through GIS techniques. Examination of coastal geomorphology, sediment flux and effectiveness of seawalls had indicated that the 130km long coastline of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is essentially stable, but for seasonal variations. It has been estimated that, out of 130km, about 55km long coast is vulnerable to sea erosion, of which, 25km is covered byseawalls and covering another 10km length underway. It is revealed through field examination that protection of coastline through these measures is satisfactory only along few patches while other stretches of seawalls simply shift the zone of erosion to adjacent coastline owing to many reasons including quality of construction, unscientific positioning of seawalls, etc. It is also inferred that same is the case of many other coastlines elsewhere including Kerala coast. These experiences warrant scientific design and implementation of coastline protection measures.

INTRODUCTION

The 130km long coastal zone of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is one of the densely populated coastal zones of India. The coastline is almost straight, regular and oriented towards N22°W, N12°W and N6°W directions at south of Mangalore, north of Mangalore and north of Malpe respectively. Barrier beaches and spits, ancient beach ridges, marshes, swamps and tidal flats characterize this zone. Natural features and man-made structures interrupt the shoreline. The natural features include estuarine mouths of Netravati-Gurpur rivers near Mangalore, Mulki-Pavanje rivers near Mulki, Udyavara river near Malpe, Sita-Swarna rivers near Barkur, Kollur-Chakra-Haladi rivers near Kundapur and rock exposures near Someshwar, Surathkal, Mulur, Kapu and north of Malpe (Fig. 1). The man-made structures include one major and four minor ports; breakwaters at the Netravati-Gurpur estuary, New Mangalore Port and Malpe harbor and a number of seawalls placed at various places along the coastline (Fig. 2). All these structures/features bring about local irregularity and contribute to erosion and accretion along the shoreline to some extent. Apart from these, source of beach material, coastal processes like wave refraction, longshore current, littoral drift etc.

2.1 Introduction

Topographic expression is the replica of geological structures present within the earths surface. When various types of rocks of an area are displayed on a map (sheet of paper), it is known as Geological Map. Normally geological maps prepared on topographic maps. Surface topography is best presented by contour lines on a plain paper.

The importance of geological maps is to understand the nature of structure and distribution of surface outcrops with their relation to contour lines. Horizontal and dipping beds are easily identified on map because, horizontal beds runs parallel to contour lines while inclined beds cut through different contours. The angle and direction of dip can be calculated from geological maps. Geological maps are of great importance to civil engineers, after studying geological maps and consultation with geologists, civil engineers can advice for construction of engineering structures like excavation of road cuttings and construction of canal, bridges, dams and tunnels etc. Geologists get vital clues about the geological history of an area, and can draw a cross section of an area and know the structure present underground.

Abstract

Landslides have become a recurring phenomenon in most of the mountainous regions of the world. In Indian peninsular, the landslides which were mostly confined to the tectonically active Himalayan Mountains once, have started spreading over to the other mountain belts of the Peninsula. The Tirumala – Tirupati hills, which is drawing millions of pilgrims from all over the world is facing landslides especially along the newly built southern uphill Ghat Road. The geology of the area, studied using geomatics tools like Remote Sensing, SRTM based Digital Elevation Models, GPS Survey, etc., showed that Tirumala hills is under the grip of upward tectonic movement as evidenced from the N-S and E–W oriented Pleistocene faults, intensely dissected Plateau top Cuddapah Quartzites, retreating escarpments, exhaustive debris slopes, extensive valley fills along the slopes, colluvial fills in lower slopes, palaeo debris flows along the southern and western obsequent slopes of the Tirumala hills etc. All these indicate the inherent landslide vulnerability of the slopes. The E-W trending dykes which are piercing the slopes and standing as ridges add further landslide vulnerability to such fragile slopes. So, the new ghat road laid along such southern slope is obviously facing landslides. However, the detailed geomatics based studies show that the dykes, valley fills and steep slopes are particularly more vulnerable to landslides. Though remedial measures have been broadly evolved, abandoning the southern uphill new ghat road and widening the older northern downhill ghat road seems to be the better and long term feasible alternative to prevent Landslides.

Weeds can be considered a significant problem because they tend to decrease crop yields by increasing competition for water, sunlight and nutrients while serving as host plants for pests and diseases. Since the invention of herbicides, farmers have used these chemicals to eradicate weeds from their fields. Using herbicides not only increased crop yields but also reduced the labor required to remove weeds. Today, some farmers have a renewed interest in organic methods of managing weeds since the widespread use of agro-chemicals has resulted in purported environment and health problems. It has also been found that in some cases herbicides use can cause some weed species to dominate fields because the weeds develop resistance to herbicides. In addition, some herbicides are capable of destroying weeds that are harmless to crops, resulting in a potential decrease in biodiversity on farmers. It is important to understand that under an organic system of weed control, weeds could never be eliminated but only managed. In organic agriculture weeds are the resources as they are mostly native to the field/areas of existence (Children’s of the soil)

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FUNGI

1. Thallus

The body of the fungus is called as Thallus, which is without stem root and leaves. It maybe Plasmodial, Pseudoplasmodial , Pseudomycelial or Mycelial. A single thread like filament is called as hypha. A hypha is made up of a thin, transparent tabular wall filled or lined with a layer of protoplasm.

A group of hypha constituting the body of fungus is called as mycelium may be septate or aseptate. i.e coenocytic.

a) Coenocytic or Nonseptate or Aseptate Mycelium

When mycelium is not divided by cross walls called as Cornocytic mycelium.

Depending upon the nature of parasitism with the host plant, mycelium is either ecotophytic or endophytic.

b) Septate Mycelium

When mycelium is divided by cross walls or septa called as septate mycelium.

INTRODUCTION

The current food crisis has put the agriculture production on a tight leash, not allowing the producers any lassitude whatsoever. Even though we have outgrown from our ‘ship to mouth existence’; our least negligence can torpedo our efforts to maintain the steady state of progress achieved in food grain production. Around 35% of what is produced is lost due to pest and diseases. In this situation, plant protection assumes significance. Unfortunately our plant protection regime begins and ends with pesticides. It is the default option in the plant protection menu and all the other options more or less remain defunct and unused. Even though, our major thrust areas of plant protection are promotion of Integrated Pest Management: ensuring availability of safe and quality pesticides for sustaining food production from the ravages of pests and diseases, streamlining the quarantine measures for accelerating the introduction of new high yielding crop varieties, besides eliminating the chances of entry of exotic pests; we remain largely insulated from these aspects in IPM.

With the Globolization and liberalization in International trade of plants and plant material in the wake of Sanitary and Phytosanitory (SPS) Agreement under WTO, the plant quarantine measures have become more imperative. Liberalization of trade policies have helped the world agriculture trade to prosper which is key sector for many countries like India whose economies are dependent on agrarian industry. But the likehood of the presence of disease/pest inherent in the import material can very well geopardize the trade. Activities are meant to help agricultural development and Plant quarantine service are charged with the responsibility of preventing the entry of hazardous pests, pathogens and weeds, but to deny entry of valuable genetic re-sources would be against national interest. These activities are meant to help agricultural development and they are complementary to each other and therefore are necessary, and we on our parts need to be fairly vigilant. As has been very truly said-An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Animal husbandry

Animal husbandry is the branch of science concerned with the care and breeding of domestic animals such as cattle, hogs, goat, sheep and horses.

India supports nearly 20% of the world livestock and 16.8% human population with a land area of only 2.3%. India leads in cattle and buffalo population and has world’s second largest goat and third largest sheep population. As per the 19^th Livestock census (2012) cattle (191 millions), buffalo (109 m), Sheep (65 m), goats (135 m), pigs (10.29m), camels (0.4 m) and poultry (729.2 m) population was reported in India. The total livestock population has decreased by about 3.33% over the previous census. India’s milk production increased from 43 million tonnes in 1983 to 155.5 million tonnes in 2015-16 (annual growth of 6.27%) and stands first in milk production in world.. The egg production is around 82.93 billion during 2015-16. The per capita availability is around 66 eggs per annum. The poultry meat production is estimated to be 3.26 million tonnes. Wool production (43.6 million Kgs) and meat production is 7.0 million tonnes in 2015-16.

Abstract

Seaweeds are the large marine algae that grow almost exclusively in the shallow waters at the edge of the oceans. Seaweeds are rich sources of many bioactive compounds and nutraceuticals. These factors are considered under two categories: Seaweed phytochemicals and Seaweed polysaccharides. They are rich in soluble dietary fibers, proteins, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, with low caloric value. The red, brown and green seaweeds have been shown to have therapeutic properties for health and disease management. Usually they are only used as gelling agent and stabilizers in the food and pharmaceutical industries, but current research has revealed their potential medicinal uses against many diseases like cancer, allergy, diabetes, oxidative stress, inflammation, thrombosis, obesity, hypertensive and other degenerative ailments. In line with other natural foods like fruits, vegetables and grains, there has been marked interest within the scientific community to assess which fractions of seaweeds may be linked to the historically observed health benefits. As consumer health and nutrition become more influential in the food industry, the use of seaweed as an ingredient is on the rise in product development. For several centuries there has been a traditional use of seaweeds as food in China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. This review undertakes successful exploration of potential of seaweed gums as an functional ingredient in a number of food applications. This addition has the potential to enhance the nutritional quality of a product and hence human health.

ABSTRACT

Leaf N and chlorophyll (Chl) concentration of crop are important indicators of plant nitrogen status. Laboratory determination of plant tissue N is time consuming and costly. Also remote sensing is quickly becoming recognized as a valuable tool that has the potential to asses a wide variety of physiological properties over a large area in a short amount of time. This study examined the relationship of sorghum and bajra canopy reflectance spectral response to its nitrogen and chlorophyll content. The study consisted of two nitrogen level (N₀ : no nitrogen and N₁: recommended dose of nitrogen for each crop) for two crops (sorghum and bajra) . Chlorophyll and N content were measured throughout the growing season for both crops. Reflectance at increased significantly as N fertilizer rate decreased. Chl and N were strongly related to canopy reflectance for either individual wavelength or for spectral vegetative indices or ratios. Sorghum nitrogen fertilizer rate mainly affected leaf reflectance at 575 and 623 nm, while bajra at 565 and 657nm. The reflectance values at 581 and 603 nm had the highest correlation with sorghum leaf N concentration. Similarly, bajra leaf N concentration was highly correlated with 619 and 696 nm. Sorghum and bajra leaf N concentrations were highly correlated with reflectance ratio of R₅₈₁/ R₃₈₁ (r²= 0.44*) and R₆₁₉/R₄₆₂ (r²= 0.78***) respectively with greatest r² value. Similarly, Sorghum and bajra leaf Chl concentrations were highly correlated with R677/R527 (r²= 0.63**) andR688/R409 (r²= 0.71***) or R615/R411 (r2=0.71***),

respectively. Thus our results suggest that spectral reflectance measurements hold promise for the assessment of some physiological parameter at the leaf level real time monitoring of sorghum and bajra N status and N fertilizer management.

There are several types of features and structures of the gardens. The design, material and placement varies from one type of garden to others. However, there are some basic requirements in every type of gardens. Common features and structures of the gardens are described hereunder for providing some basic information.

Boundary

Material and construction of the outer boundary is to be considered depending upon the size and type of garden. Protection, permanency and cost of construction are the main factors. It should be well designed and an architectural show piece co-relating with type and design of the garden. Ornamental creepers are planted along the boundary wall and trained over the same for further beautification purpose.

Rose is most popular of all garden plants and regarded as queen of the flowers. Various colours, forms, fragrance of the flowers are major attraction. Roses are generally grown as bedded plants but can successfully be grown in pots also. Therefore, those who do not have land for bedding purpose may grow them in pots. Every kind of garden has scope for growing roses in various forms. In home garden, growing roses is always preferred. A single bloom of rose creates a tremendous sensation and enjoyment to the house owner. Similarly, public parks, institutional, factory and temple gardens have equal scope for growing roses in beds. There are large numbers of cultivars available in the horticultural trade and one has to select them depending upon the garden type, climatic conditions and purpose of the garden.

Species and Cultivars

Rose (Rosa sp.) is a woody perennial belongs to the family Rosaceae. There are about more than 100 species having varied growth habit ranging from erect shrub to climbing and miniature. Similarly, flowers have different forms, size, colour and fragrance. Majority of the species are native to India while a smaller number is native to Europe, North America and northwest Africa. Species found in India are - Rosa clinophylla (R. involucrata), R. foetida, R. gigantea (R. odorata var. Gigantea), R. leschenaultiana, R. moschata, R.macrophylla etc.

For development of garden roses, following eight species had main contribution as parental species - Rosa chinensis, R. damascena, R. foetida, R. gallica, R. gigantea, R. moschata, R. multiflora and R. wichuraiana. Inter-species crosses between Chinese roses and European started the development of modern roses.

Bonsai is the art and science of dwarfing plants and growing them in shallow containers. The word ‘Bonsai’ is a Japanese term consisting of two words, ‘Bon‘- a shallow container and ‘sai’ - to plant. Therefore, bonsai is a technique of growing plants (trees, shrubs and others) in shallow containers in dwarf form. With the help of pruning, pinching and training a three dimensional effect is produced. It is a kind of living sculpture and idealized nature in miniature. An ideal bonsai is replica of a particular plant or an artistic variation in shape whose different parts are in complete harmony. Development of bonsai requires an artistic eye, skills on training, pruning and knowledge on growing plants in containers.

This technique was developed by the Chinese over 2000 years ago and later excelled by the Japanese. Bonsai is now popular all over the world and very useful for the people who are living in flats and have no scope to have outdoor gardens. Every house owner likes to have few specimen plants for interior decoration. Bonsai provides them an additional opportunity to grow more number of plants being dwarf in nature. Considering its present popularity, Bonsai is now important horticulturally for its commercial and aesthetic value.

Floral decoration in India has got a historical background spreading over different eras. Admiration of natural beauty, plants and flowers were part of civilization process. Many evidences are there in the paintings, carvings on wall of caves, temples, mosque besides literatural references that flowers were in use in many forms since time immemorial. Every religion, culture, rulers and regimes had great influence on the use of flowers.

At present, flowers are integral part of our daily life. We use flowers in various ways and for many purposes. Loose flowers are used for worship while garlands for decoration purpose during social, institutional, official functions etc. In addition, cutflowers in the form of bouquets are very common in use. Arrangement of flowers in the vase, bowl or any other container is displayed extensively for interior decoration. At present, placing flower vase is very popular in houses, corporate offices, institutes, hotels etc. and is a well established practice.

14.1 Principles of X-ray Diffraction

Any crystalline structure is characterized by a regular and systematic arrangement of atoms (or ions) in a three-dimensional array. Since crystals are composed of regularly spaced atoms or ions, each crystal contains planes of atoms or ions separated by a constant distance which is the characteristic of that crystalline species.

X-rays are essentially electrostatic and electromagnetic fields oscillating in planes perpendicular to each other and to the direction of propagation in periodic cycles. X-rays having wavelengths in the order of 10^-3 to 10¹ nm, are produced within a vacuum x-ray tube by bombardment of a metal anode with high-velocity electrons. High-velocity electrons transfer their energy to the electrons of metal anode causing their elevation to higher energy level (excited state). Excited electrons of metal atom soon come back to the vacant shell and each electron transfer from higher to lower energy state results release of a quantum of energy (x-ray photon) equivalent to the difference in energy between these two levels. The energy and the wavelength of emitted x-ray photons are finite and characteristic of the particular atoms of the metal anode used in x-ray tube. Usually, photons generated due to electron transfer from L-shell to K-shell are used for x-ray diffraction analysis.

Diffraction of x-ray involves scattering of x-rays by planes of atoms of the crystal separated by definite distance and reinforcement of scattered rays in definite direction away from the crystal. Reinforcement of scattered rays is quantitatively related to the distance of atomic planes in a crystal as defined by Bragg’s equation:

18.1 Determination of Electrical Conductivity of Soil Solution

The conductivity or more precisely the specific conductance of a soil at a given soil-water ratio is the reciprocal of the specific resistance offered by the solution at 25ºC between the electrodes of 1 sq cm cross section kept 1 cm apart. Thus, the electrical conductivity of any solution depends on the amount of soluble salt present in it. Knowledge on the extent of salinity is important for management of saline soil including the choice of the crop suitable for that soil. Soluble salt content in saturation extract is more reliable index of salinity level than in soil: water ratio of 1: 2 or 1: 2.5, because it simulates the extent of salinity experienced by crop in field moisture condition.

Salinity class of soil is based on the electrical conductivity (EC) of saturation extract at 25ºC. However, EC of water extract from 1:2 soil-water suspension can be transformed into the EC of saturation extract following the formula (except for soil containing gypsum).

Sugarcane is the most important sugar crop contributing more than 62% of the world's sugar production. With increasing human population in the world, sugar requirement has also gone up. Molasses is an important by-product of sugar industry. It is used for the production of alcohol by the distillaries. Alcohol serves as a base material in pharmaceuticals and several other industries. The manufacture of gur (jaggery) and khandsari as alternative sweetening agents in India from sugarcane also plays considerable role in the Indian economy, particularly in rural area. Nearly 40 % of the sugarcane produced is utilised for manufacture of gur and khandsari. Sugarcane is bound to play a greater role in the Indian economy in the years to come by offering a stable income to the farmers by way of cane price, by providing employment to rural masses, by realising excise duty, Cane Cess/ purchase tax and foreign exchange earning.

Acreage and production

Sugarcane is grown in tropical and sub tropical regions. Brazil has largest area and production of sugarcane.India is second to Brazil in sugarcane production. It is followed by Cuba and China. Other important cane growing countries are Pakistan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia etc. So far, as average sugarcane productivity is concerned Peru ranks first in average sugarcane yield. To meet the sugar requirement of increasing population in future, it is essential that sugarcane production is stepped up. Since there is no scope at present to bring additional land under sugarcane, productivity of sugarcane, the targets have to be achieved only through increased productivity.

Agroforestry is a collective name for land-use systems and technologies in which woody perennials including trees, shrubs, bamboos etc. are deliberately combined on the same land-management unit with herbaceous crops or animals either in some form of spatial arrangement or temporal sequence. In agroforestry system there are both ecological and economic interactions amongst the different components (Lundgren and Raintree, 1982). The origin of agroforestry practices, i.e. growing trees with food crops and grasses, is believed to have been during Vedic era (Ancient period, 1000 B.C.), the agro-forestry as a science is introduced only recently. Agro-forestry is the science of designing and developing integrated, self-sustainable, land-management systems that involves the introduction and retention of woody components such as trees, shrubs, bamboos, canes and palms along with agricultural crops including pastures or animals, simultaneously or sequentially on the same unit of land and time, to satisfy the ecological as well as socio-economic needs of people. This practice of growing trees and arable crops together on the same piece of land is an age-old practice with the dry land farmers. Agroforestry results in multiple products, increases income, reduces runoff and soil loss, utilizes off-season rainfall and radiation and gives stability to dry land agriculture. Further it makes the future generation farmers to inherit not only the land of their predecessors, but also the wealth of standing biomass of trees.

National Forest Policy (1988) has set a goal that 33% of the country’s geographical area should be under forest and tree cover. Under Tenth Five Year Plan, the Government of India has set a target to increase the country’s forest cover up to 25%. According to the latest report of Forest Survey of India (2013), the forest cover in the country is 697,898 km², constituting 21.23% of its total geographical area. Out of this, dense forest constitutes 12.24 % and open forest 8.99 %. The only solution to achieve these targets is through the practice of agroforestry. Therefore, in the quest of optimising productivity, the multi-tier system came into existence.

Introduction

Agriculture has been the joint venture of both men and women since the time immemorial. Women play a significant role in agriculture and are responsible for half of the world’s food production in most of the developing countries. According to International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), women play a central role as producer of food, managers of natural resources, income earners and care takers of household food and nutrition security. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) studies also confirm that women are the mainstay of small scale agriculture, the farm labour force and day to day family subsistence. About 70 per cent of agricultural workers, 80 per cent of food producers and 10 per cent of those who process basic foodstuffs are women and thus making up more than two-third of the workforce in agriculture production. They currently account for 60-70 % of all food production in all the developing countries. Other than agriculture and allied sectors like dairy, poultry, fishery, goatery and sericulture, women are also skilled in handicrafts, wooden works and various other types of small enterprises which boost the rural economy. They are also involved in small scale enterprises like rope making, broom making, bamboo works. All women in rural areas, irrespective to their age, size of their family, size of land holding, caste and community, perform major agricultural tasks. The rural women form the most important productive work force in the economy of majority of the developing nations like India. Agriculture sector employs 4/5^th of all economically active women in the country and 48 per cent of India’s self employed farmers are women (Kumar, 2013). In present scenario, nearly 84 per cent of economically active women in India are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. In a study undertaken by DRWA (Directorate of Research on Women in Agriculture) in low land and rainfed rice in Odisha revealed that under low lying situation, women spent nearly 20 days in uprooting and transplanting, 10 days in intercultural operations and 20 days in harvesting and transportation. In up land rainfed rice women were involved for 40 days mainly in gap filling, weeding, harvesting threshing etc. (Arya, 2008). The rural women of low-income category and lower caste perform more work in farm related field activities while the women of higher income groups perform more work in post harvest processing like storing of food grains, parboiling, winnowing, preparing puffed rice etc. In tribal areas, women participate in all agricultural operations except ploughing. They are seen to do more hard work in the fields than men. Depending upon the socio-cultural variations among different tribal communities, Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) are collected by tribal women. They collect food, fodder, fuel, medicinal plants, building materials and other household materials. Every day during off seasons, they go to forest for collecting NTFPs and sell it in the local hats (market) for day to day expenditure of their family. Sal and kendu leaves are also collected by them for their livelihood support. Ladies are the decision makers in farming sector as well as on other domestic affairs because of their greater contribution of household income. Marketing of their produce and also other materials collected from forest by them are exclusively done by the women group. Tribes mostly depend on forest and forest products during the dry period of the year. Now-a-days non-availability of NTFPs has shifted women from self employed to wage employment.

Body needs energy for the functioning of various processes for the nutrition and repair of damage tissue. This energy comes from the food nutrients. The food nutrients undergo a series of chemical reactions in the body to release the necessary energy.

The higher animals are dependent on plants and other animals for their nutrients. They can classified into two groups.

Carnivores : Those animals which obtain most of their food by eating other animals are carnivores in these species digestion is mainly enzymatic in nature and microbial digestion is minimal.

Herbivores : These animals obtain most of their food nutrients from herbage and other plant parts. In the herbivores, microbial digestion is of great significance and allows utilization of plant materials that are not broken down by the enzymes present in the digestive secretions.

Most of the domesticated animals except cat & dog fall in the category of herbivores. The domesticated herbivores can be divided into three groups:

1. Ruminants : Those possessing a rumen (cow, buffalo, sheep, goat, camel etc.) in which there is extensive microbial fermentation of the herbage diet in a specialized region of the digestive tract, prior to its digestion by the alimentary enzymes.
2. Psedoruminants eg members of the camelidae family eg camel, Ilama, alpaca, vicuna etc. In pseudoruminants animal third compartment of the compound stomach is absent.
3. Non-Ruminant : The second group is those with simple stomachs (Horse, Pig) in which fermentation takes place in the posterior part of the digestive tract.

The reproductive system of female domestic animals consists of (1) A pair of ovaries attached with ligaments to the uterus (2) A pair of fallopian tubes the distal ends of which (infundibula) serve to receive ova expelled from the ovary and the proximal ends enter the uterus (3) The uterus proper with its outer smooth myometrium and inner mucous endometrium which either sloughs off periodically or develops in part into a placenta, depending on whether pregnancy occurs (4) Vagina which serves to receive sperm.

Ovaries

The two ovaries are connected to the back of the female with ligaments inside the main body cavity. When puberty, or sexual maturity is reached, the ovaries begin to function with a rhythm or cycle of activity, the most evident manifestation of which is estrus or heat. The estrus period or heat is the period when the female is receptive to the male. The duration of heat in cattle is around 19 hours. The interval between heats in 19½ to 20 days in cattle. The duration of estrus and cycle is variable in different individuals and in different seasons of the year.

The ovarian parenchyma contains a large number of potential egg forming cells. There are many more of these than are required for the breeding life of female. New follicles begin to grow each estrus cycle one of which finally ovulates.

The ovary is covered by the peritoneum except the attached border where the vessels and nerves enter. In most animals the ovary is some what divided into a cortex, in which the follicles with the developing ova are located and a medulla which is rich in blood vessels, lymphaticus and nerves.

Each Graafian follicle normally contains only one developing ovum. The follicle vary in size according to their stage of development, the more advanced project the surface of the ovary slightly.

I. INTRODUCTION

Over the last few decades, protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) has become a global issue. The existing international intellectual property rights regime has been governed by the Trade- Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement.1 Inspite of maturity of intellectual property laws in post TRIPS era it still desiderate to established coherence with human rights laws particularly right to health and maintain a distance with the socio-economic dimension of intellectual property protection. On the other hand the international human rights instruments from the very beginning appear to be considerable to make certain links with intellectual property rights.2 The issue that is now debated that the adoption of the TRIPS Agreement provisions have serious impact on the realization of certain basic human rights such as the right to health because of non availability and affordability of much needed medicines for the poorer populations of the world particularly in majority of developing countries. Meanwhile TRIPS flexibilities as confirmed by the Doha Declaration on Public Health were adopted in 2001 by the global community to address medicines as public health issue.3 Keeping in view the above developments the problem of right to health and the relationship between medical patents and access to medicine in the case of the HIV/ AIDS and T.B epidemics is complex challenge in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 adopted by Member States of the United Nations in Sep, 2015. One of the aims of the agenda is to ensure healthy lives and promote the well-being of people of ages.4 In such a situation it is high time to revisit the existing intellectual property regime in the broader context to protect everyone who is likely to be negatively affected by intellectual property standards imposed by developed nations. Under this backdrop the present paper wishes to examine the various kinds of potential impacts of intellectual property regime on the realization of access to medicine as part of human right to health as universal entitlements amongst the most disadvantaged and marginalized peoples and communities in the broader context of sustainable development goals.

Organization means a system with parts which work together, or system with parts dependent upon each other. According to Louis Allen, organization is a process of identifying and grouping the works to be performed, defining and delegating responsibility and authority, and establishing relationships for the purpose of enabling people to work most effectively together in accomplishing objectives.

There is a difference between the words "Organizing" and "organization". Organizing refers to i) the identification and classification of required activities, ii) the grouping of activities necessary to attain objectives, iii) the assignment of each grouping to a manager with the authority (delegation) necessary to sepervise it, and iv) the provision for co-ordination, horizontally and vertically, in the oganization structure.

Organization implies a formalized intentional structure of roles or positions. The "intentional structure of roles" would refer to the roles people are asked to fill should be intentionally designed to ensure that required activities are done and that activities fit together so that people can work smoothly, effectively and efficiently in groups.

Functional Areas

In any business organization, the commonly identified functional areas are production, marketing and finance. In recent years, the personnel and materials that go into the production process, packing process and marketing process have gained importance and given due importance by treating them separately as personnel and materials management.

The above functional areas are not watertight compartments. The decisions/actions taken in one functional area affect the other functional area. The decisions in production and marketing are influenced by the actions on such matters as volume, terms and conditions of loan. The quantity, quality and timely availability of materials also has a bearing on production and marketing decisions. The labour motivation towards work and supervising ability/skill of supervising personnel also affects production and marketing.

There is sufficient support to view that foreign trade plays has a vital role in the economic development of a country. Its contribution to the growth of National Income can be quite substantial. If a country is pulled into world trade, then the country can and should maximize its real income by specializing along lines of comparative advantage. The volume and composition of foreign trade have a profound influence on the character and the extent of development of a country. From the point of view of economic development, both import and export are important. It is through import that a country could obtain plant, machinery and equipment, components, raw materials, technical know-how, etc., which are indispensable for accelerating economic development.

India’s share in world exports was 0.54 per cent in 1970s, which has risen to 0.81 per cent in 2000s and exports has grown 700 times and imports more than thousand times during the course of economic development. It is clearly observed from Table 16.1 that import is greater than export. The rate of growth of export between 2001-02 and 2007-08 was 90 per cent, whereas import growth rate was 150 per cent in the corresponding period.
