Photosynthesis is a very important parameter in plant physiological studies. It is the only process in nature which utilizes solar energy and converts it into chemical energy. It has a direct bearing on plant productivity. By understanding the process of photosynthesis, manipulation of productivity can be made possible.

1. Measurement of Photosynthesis Rate

Measurement of CO₂ uptake provides an alternate and direct method of measuring productivity, with important advantages over measurements of change in dry weight. It is instantaneous and non-destructive.

Infra Red Gas Analyzer (IRGA) is an equipment which is most widely used for the measurement of photosynthesis in situ in the field or in detached leaves under laboratory conditions. It is less time consuming and reliable. It can also be used for the measurement of rate of respiration and CO₂ compensation concentration (CO₂ CC), provided a little alteration is made in the chamber.

Photosynthesis- the word photo refers to light and synthesis means preparation. Thus, photosynthesis is the process by which the green plants use light energy of the sun to synthesize carbohydrates. Carbohydrates like simple sugars (glucose) can be stored as starch.

The green plants are eaten by the herbivores, which in turn are consumed by carnivores. Ultimately, the decomposers derive their nutrition from the dead plants and animals. Thus, all organisms are dependent directly or indirectly on green plants, which synthesize food by photosynthesis. Thus, photosynthesis is the most important life sustaining process of nature (Calvin, 1976; Emerson and Arnold, 1932). Photosynthesis is a series of biochemical reactions, which can be essentially summarized as follows:

1. Introduction
Water is the most essential resource for life, supporting the survival of allliving beings, including humans, and playing a crucial role in food productionand economic progress. Currently, many cities around theworld are facingsignificant water shortages. About 40 % of global food production dependson irrigation, and countless industrial operations rely heavily on water. Theavailability and quality of water, whether surface or groundwater, have amajor impact on environmental health, economic development, and societagrowth. Human activities like urban expansion, population increase, industrialoutput, and climate shifts are causing a decline in water quality. As nationsdevelop, industrial activities increasingly lead to the pollution of watersources, resulting in negative consequences such as widespread disease and
diminished beauty of water bodies. This pollution is a significant threat toboth the planet and its inhabitants. Higher temperatures are interfering with themetabolic processes of aquatic life, while changes in water pH create unstableconditions. Additionally, increased cloudiness in water reduces oxygen levels,affecting deep-water species and contributing to health issues for both animalsand humans. Polluted water also hinders growth and development in allliving organisms Haldar et al., 2015 and Arif et al., 2020. A study conductedby Halder et al. (2015) highlighted severe health challenges faced bylocalcommunities due to pollution in the Turag River, Dhaka, caused by thedischarge of untreated wastewater into the river. It was revealed that elevatedpH levels in the water, resulting from the use ofcaustic chemicals such assoda ash and caustic soda in industrial processes, were associated with skinirritation and sores. Dietary exposure to polluted crops and fish was found
to contribute to stomach ailments, including gastric ulcers. Concerns wereraised about potential groundwater contamination through the infiltration ofindustrial waste. Microbial contamination was identified as a likely cause ofdiarrhoea and dysentery. The use of river water for bathing and laundry wasobserved to facilitate the spread of waterborne diseases. Outbreaks of yellow
fever, cholera, dengue, malaria, and other epidemics were noted as prevalent inthe area. Respiratory problems and foul odours were attributed to air pollutioncaused by industrial discharge. Maternal and child health in riverbank slumsfound to be vulnerable, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions to addressthese public health concerns.Wastewater produced by industries, agriculture,and domestic activities contains high levels of nutrients, heavy metals, andchemicals, which harm the environment by polluting land, air, and water,

Abstract

Photosynthetic blooms of toxin producing marine algae are often referred to as “red tides”. Proliferations of freshwater toxin-producing cyanobacteria are simply called “cyanobacterial blooms” or “toxic algal blooms.” Biotoxins of cyanobacteria are water-soluble and heat stable and they are released upon aging or lysis of the cells. The primary types of cyanobacterial biotoxins involves three types of toxins: hepatotoxins (microcystin; cylindrospermopsin and nodularin), which are taken up by the liver and cause weakness and anorexia (loss of appetite); neurotoxins (usually anatoxin and saxitoxin), which effect the nervous system and dermatotoxins (aplysiatoxin and lyngbyatoxin, LPS), which cause skin and mucous irritations upon contact. Unlike freshwater toxic algal blooms, marine algal toxins become a problem primarily because they may concentrate in shellfish and fish that are subsequently eaten by humans, causing syndromes known as paralytic shellfish poisoning/PSP (paralysis due to saxitoxin and gonyaulatoxins), diarrhetic shellfish poisoning/DSP (diarrhea due to okadaic acid) , amnesic shellfish poisoning /ASP(memory disturbances due to domoic acid), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning/NSP (paresthesia due to brevetoxin; also bronchial spasms). Coral reef fishes are the vectors of another algal poisoning, the ciguatera fish poisoning/CFP (paresthesia, warm-cold sense inversion etc., due to ciguatoxins and maitotoxin).

Botany

Phyllanthus is an herb common to Central and Southern India. It can grow to 30–60 centimeters in height and blooms with many yellow flowers. All parts of the plant are employed therapeutically. It is a small erect annual herb 10-60 cm tall widespread in tropical areas. Leaves are small elliptical - oblong and flowers are whitish green & minute. It bears ascending herbaceous branches. The bark is smooth and light green. The fruits are tiny, smooth capsules containing seeds.Kizhanelli is a circum-tropical weed, thriving well under tropical conditions. In India, it grows abundantly up to 700m altitude in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Keeping the medical, ecological and economical importance of nematode phylum in mind, it is remarkable to see that nematode systematics is far from established. It has a long history of constant revision and there may be as many classifications as there are nematode taxonomists. Ferris and Ferris (1987) anticipated about the growing sense of excitement pervading systematics as new techniques make it possible a depth of understanding of phylogenetic relationships and affinities never before thought possible. They further stated that Darwin’s ‘genealogical taxonomy’ based on the concepts of descent with modification, is linked directly with two approaches to phylogentic inference, viz., phonetics and cladistics. In both these, patterns of descent take precedence over processes and in classifications based on these procedures, ‘grades’ and ‘gaps’ beloved by the evolutionary systematics are ignored and categories are usually of lesser importance. The phonetic approach deals with ‘natural classification’ based on overall similarity and the belief that the more characters a classification is based on, the more reliable it will be.

5. Description

Sunberry is an erect, much-branched, annual plant growing around 50cm tall. The edible fruit is sometimes gathered from the wild and used locally. This is a popular wild fruit to pick and eat. The taste of the ripe berry is sweet and distinctive. The berries are ripe when the husk turns brown and the berry inside takes on a yellowish cast. The plant also has a range of medicinal uses. Physalis minima is commonly found on the bunds of the fields, wastelands, around the houses, on roadsides, etc. where the soil is porous and rich in organic matter. It is an annual herbaceous plant having a very delicate stem and leaves.

Introduction to Nano-materials

Nano-sized materials are naturally present from forest fires and volcanoes, but are also generated unintentionally from anthropogenic sources as a by-product of combustion and deliberately as manufactured nanomaterials. Nanoparticles have been used for centuries. The coloured glass that we see in many old cathedrals from the middle age was made of gold nanosized clusters that created different colour depending on the size of the nanoparticles. The most prominent example of engineered nanoparticulate material is carbon black which has been around us for decades in applications like printing inks, toners, coatings, plastics, paper, tires and building products.
 
Two of the major factors why nanoparticles have different properties (optical, electrical, magnetic, chemical and mechanical) than bulk material are because in this size-range, the quantum effects start to predominate and the surface area to volume ratio is increased.

Milk is a complex colloidal dispersion, the physical and physicochemical properties of which depend on intrinsic compositional and structural factors, extrinsic factors such as temperature, and post-milking treatment.

There is no clear dividing line between physical properties and physicochemical properties. However, physical properties may be thought of as the measure of the bulk behaviour of milk and of how milk interacts with energy, while physicochemical properties are measures of how bulk behaviour and energy interactions depend on the constituent colloidal particles, molecules, atoms and ions in milk.

Knowledge of physical properties is of importance particularly in the technological and engineering design and control of milk processes and processing equipment. Knowledge of physicochemical properties provides the basis for the design of modern methods of milk analysis, determination of milk microstructures and elucidation of the complex chemical reactions that occur in milk.

In the dairy industry measurements of the physical properties of milk and milk products are made to secure data necessary for the design of dairy equipment (e.g., heat conductivity and viscosity) to determine the concentration of a component (e.g., specific gravity to estimate solids-not-fat or freezing point to determine added water), or to assess the extent of a physical or chemical change (e.g., titratable acidity to follow bacterial action or viscosity to assess aggregation of protein micelles or fat globules). The great advantage of physical measurements for such purposes is their speed and simplicity as well as their potentialities for automation.

Use of physical property to measure concentrations or changes in degree of dispersion demands knowledge of the contribution of the several components to that property. Furthermore, the natural range of variation of the property in milks or products is of major interest. The precision and suitability of possible methods of measurement are also of prime importance.

Physical Chemistry of Foods

    1.    Thermodynamics is primarily concerned with energy and entropy. Energy, also called internal energy (U), comprises heat and work; it is measured in joules (J).

    2.    Energy may be recalled that work generally equals force times distance (in N_·m = J) and that force equals mass times acceleration (in kg ·m· s^-2 = N).

10.1 Different practices for different purposes

There are so many different practices used in erosion control that to describe them needs some form of grouping. For a long time mechanical protection was used to describe all the methods which involved earth moving, such as digging drains, building banks, levelling sloping land, and so on. Anything else was lumped together under biological methods for want of a better title.

This is appropriate for large mechanized farms where the approach is to use machines to do the earth-moving and follow up with improved farming methods. But this division does not suit the concept of erosion control through better land husbandry supported by mechanical protection, and the division is artificial when we start talking about progressive terracing using grass strips or live hedges.

An approach more suited to today’s thinking is to group methods and techniques according to their main objective. All have an element of saving soil loss, but an important difference is the handling of surface runoff. This chapter identifies three kinds of water management objective and two types of soil management on sloping land.

5.1 Introduction
Since the early days of human interaction with the environment, particularly in industrial settings, humans have continually been “shaped” to meet the demands of their surroundings. Historically, people have often endured significant discomfort and limitations without much complaint. In metaphorical terms, individuals have adapted by extending their reach to operate controls that were difficult to access, pushing their perceptual abilities to detect faint sounds or invisible signals, and compressing their bodies to fit into cramped workspaces. Cognitive abilities have also been stretched to accommodate monotonous or tedious tasks. However, as both work environments and machines have grown more complex, these challenges have become increasingly significant. A poor “fit” between the human operator and their environment has led to countless accidents, decreased productivity, and errors in many industries. The primary goal of ergonomics is to assess human capabilities and design the environment to align with these capabilities. Instead of attempting to adapt humans to jobs, ergonomics strives to “fit the job to the person.” This approach aims to optimize safety, efficiency, and comfort by aligning machine requirements with the operator’s abilities. By establishing a connection between humans and machines, ergonomics ensures that machines communicate information to the operator through their sensory systems, prompting a response that may alter the machine’s state. Key environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, lighting, sound, and visual conditions have a direct impact on both human well-being and the quality of production. The design of both the human workspace and the equipment used can be highly effective if the environment is conducive to the operator’s needs. Therefore, it is essential to study each environmental factor from an ergonomic perspective to ensure a comfortable and productive environment for workers. This includes designing jobs, equipment, and considering human anthropometric measurements in the design process.

Heat stress occurs as a result of the combined effects of environmental conditions, physical exertion, and clothing. The key environmental factors influencing heat stress include air temperature, humidity, radiant heat, and air movement, all of which can significantly affect work performance. The general process of production of rock waste partly by mechanical breaking and partly by chemical decomposition is known as weathering. The resulting products of weathering accumulate in the same place from which they are derived and there is no transport involved in the process.

Agents and types of weathering : The agencies which are involved in the process of weathering are atmosphere, water and organisms. The whole process of weathering may be conveniently divided into two types : mechanical or physical weathering and chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering involves those processes which bring about disintegration of rocks and minerals without any chemical activity. Chemical weathering involves various chemical processes which slowly decompose the rocks and minerals. In nature two processes are intimately associated and only under extreme conditions, they do occur as a separate entities. Mechanical weathering breaks down the rock creating more surface area and facilitates chemical weathering. Chemical weathering weakens the rock and makes it more susceptible to mechanical break down. Thus the two processes are always complementary to each other.

Methods
Following physical methods are employed for reduction or elimination of primary inoculums that may be present in seed, soil, or planting material.
i. Hot water treatment (HWT)
Hot water treatment is widely used for the control of seed borne pathogens, especially bacteria and viruses. A list of various important diseases claimed to have been controlled by hot water treatment is given in Table-1.

It is classified asbottom-up manufacturing which involves building up of the atomor molecular constituents asagainstthetop methodwhich involves making smaller and smaller structures through etching from the bulk material as exemplified by the semiconductor industry.

In the physical methods of preservation, fruits and vegetables are preserved by (i) adding heat, (ii) removing moisture content of produce to prevent spoilage and (iii) irradiated by Gama rays which kill the microorganisms responsible for spoilage of foods. These methods are described below.

Processing and Preservation by Adding Heat or Heating

In this method, heat treatment is given to destroy the microorganisms which are responsible for spoilage of the produce. Heat treatment is given by many methods.

The presence of humic acids, fulvic acids, metallic ions, suspended matter, plankton, weeds, and industrial effluents all contribute to the colour of natural water.

Three fundamental processes that are responsible for inducing changes in weather are transfer of heat, energy and mass. The Sun, whose inter-surface temperature is estimated to be around 6000°C emits heat energy in the form of solar radiation which is received at the earth’s surface after it is partly depleted in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is essential to understand the processes that govern the transfer of heat in the earth-atmosphere system.

The transfer of heat from one point to another point within the material medium without the actual movement of the particles in the medium is called conduction i.e. the heat energy transfer is conducted by the particles in the medium from hot end to cold end. If a metal rod is heated at one end, the other end of rod becomes hot gradually due to transfer of heat by conduction. The chapter aims at introducing selected physical properties of food and biological materials in food process and application in the field of food technology. These physical properties of food are not only used for designing of food equipments but can also maintain the nutritive value of food to a greater extent during processing in these equipments.

Introduction

The investigation of food engineering is spotlighted on the inspection of equipments and system used to process food materials on a commercial scale. Building of system for food materials can be efficient if two factors are known, the nature of the food product and what happen to the food during its processing. Food materials are organic in nature and it has a certain kind of qualities which recognize them from other processed food product. Since food materials are organic in nature, they have (a) shapes usually found in normally non regular; (b) properties which differ from other food products; (c) heterogeneous arrangement; (d) properties are varied due to climatic conditions, ripening conditions, etc. and (e) several other factors such as (e) influenced by chemical changes, moisture content variation and enzymatic movement. Managing food materials with these remarkable attributes requires extra thought, for the most part by implication and extra sources or reasons for different varieties. The attributes of a food material that are autonomous of the on looker, quantifiable, can be measured, and characterize the condition of the material (yet not how it accomplished that state) are considered as its physical properties.

Abstract

Physical properties of food are aspects such as colour, structure, texture, rheology and interfacial properties, and composition. We have a range of instrumental methods for objectively characterising and measuring food structure and physical properties. These are useful for applications such as new product development, benchmarking, reformulation and specification.

Colour

Consistent and accurate measurements of the colour and visual appearance of food products is extremely important. Various methods are available for colour measurement, allowing a wide variety of sample types to be measured. Colour measurement results are typically provided on the CIELAB scale. Others are available on request.

The primary constituents of milk are water, fat, protein, sugar (lactose), minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Milk is a thin emulsion made up of two phases: A continuous aqueous colloidal phase and a dispersed phase of oil or fat. It is an opaque white liquid containing fat in an emulsion, protein, and a few minerals in a colloidal suspension, and lactose along with soluble proteins and a few minerals in a true solution. The physical characteristics of milk are comparable to those of water, but they are altered by the degree of dispersion of the colloidal and emulsified components as well as the presence of different solutes, such as salts, lactose, and protein, in the continuous phase.

Physical Appearance, Color and Optical Properties

Fat globules and casein micelles scatter light, giving the appearance of turbid and opaque milk. The way that molecules scatter light has an impact on optical characteristics. When the wavelength of light and the particle’s magnitude coincide, light scattering happens. Consequently, light with shorter wavelengths is scattered by smaller particles and vice versa. Because casein micelles scatter blue light more than red light at shorter wavelengths, skim milk appears slightly blue. Cow’s milk has a creamy color because of beta- carotene, a carotenoid precursor to vitamin A. The greenish tinge in whey is due to the presence of riboflavin. Turbid and opaque due to scattering of light mainly by protein micelles and fat globules.

Abstract

Multi-commodity flours were prepared by blending rice flour, mung flour and potato flour with wheat flour in ratios of 0:0:0:100, 5:5:5:85, 10:10:10:70 and 15:15:15:55, respectively and packaged in glass jar, high density polyethylene and aluminium flexible packaging for biscuits development. The standardized formulations for biscuit had ingredients as 100 g flour/multi-commodity flour, 45 g sugar, 45 g hydrogenated fat, 1.25 g sodium bicarbonate, 1.25 g baking powder and 1.0 g curry leave powder. The biscuits were baked in convective baking oven at 180 > C for 10-15 min till baked. The well baked biscuits were removed from the oven, cooled to room temperature, packaged and stored under ambient condition. The physical quality (Mass, thickness, diameter, spread ration percent spread and bulk density), of biscuits were analyzed just after preparation under ambient condition. Results were also reported that the spread ratio of multi-commodity flour biscuits increased with decrease in the incorporation of wheat flour in multi-commodity flours. It is clear that spread ratio is mostly influenced by the diameter and thickness of biscuits.

The major components of soil consisting with mineral and organic matter, water and air produces a three phase systems of solid, liquid and gas. Many of the soil properties influencing crop growth and other uses depend mostly on the relative proportions of these components as well as the size, shape and arrangements of the solid matters. The physical properties of soil have strong significance in sustaining agricultural productivity. Fertiliser alone or in conjunction with suitable crop varieties and plant protection measures cannot be sufficient towards improving crop productivity unless the soil physical properties are maintained at satisfactory level. Improvement and restoration of physical properties in soil are necessary for protection of soil resources against degradation. The physical properties of soil discussed in this chapter includes soil densities, texture, structure, porosity and consistency of soils and colour of the soil.

Physical properties of wood

The versatility of wood is demonstrated by a wide variety of products. This variety is a result of a spectrum of desirable physical characteristics or proper ties among the many species of wood. In many cases, more than one property of wood is important to the end product. For example, to select a wood species for a product, the value of appearance-type properties, such as texture, grain pattern and color, may be evaluated against the influence of characteristics such as machinability, dimensional stability and decay resistance.

This chapter introduces the physical properties that determine the performance, processing behaviour and end use of wool. It examines fibre diameter, crimp, length, strength, elasticity, resilience, moisture regain, felting behaviour and thermal characteristics. The chapter relates these properties to spinning, fabric construction, comfort and durability. It also explains objective measurements and quantitative descriptors such as coefficient of variation and staple strength, providing a scientific foundation for evaluating wool quality and predicting its suitability for different textile applications.

Physical purity test determines the proportion of pure seed, other crop seed, weed seed, inert matter, moisture and germination components in the seed lot by weight in percentage in accordance to prescribed Seed Standards. It thus, helps in improving the plant stand, raising a pure crop by eliminating other crop seeds, weed seeds and disease free-seeds. Seed must not be sold until the percentage of pure seed, other crop seed, weed seed, and inert matter are in accordance to seed physical purity standards. Physical purity test is required for seed certification or seed law enforcement and it is a pre-requisite for ger- mination test.

In the wildlife conservation and management, restraint and handling of wild/zoo and exotic animals play a prominent role. Zoo veterinarian has to deal with animal handling on a regular basis for various purposes like routine health checkup, research purpose (assisted reproductive techniques, blood collection for genetic health analysis, radio-collaring), or for conservation and management purposes (capture of problematic animals, translocation. introduction and reintroduction) and for the marking of animals. So, proper management called for good restraint in wildlife.

So to maintain a standard quality of wool for fabric development it is utmost important to test the wool fiber for certain qualities. Testing of wool fiber is also important to retain the unique physical and chemical properties of wool which makes this fiber versatile. Fiber quality is in real sense is a set of characteristics and defects in the fleece; both inherited and acquired, which influence its end use. The term quality testing includes a process of critical examination of material to draw the information’s related to qualitative or quantitative aspects of wool fibers. Introduction

India is having very rich sources of inland water bodies in the form of river, lakes and reservoirs. The reservoirs are constructed by impounding the river system. The reservoirs are constructed for effective utilisation of water for irrigation, power generation and flood control. Reservoir fishery in India is also important from socio-economic point of view as it has the potential of providing employment to about two million people, Kaushal and Sharma (2001). Total area under the reservoirs in India is 3:1 million ha and it is expected to double by 2020. This includes 19,000 small reservoirs with a total water surface area of 14,85,557 ha and about 180 medium and 56 large reservoirs of 5,27,541 and 11,40, 268 ha area respectively.

The Maharashtra is endowed with an area of 1,79,430 ha under reservoir and the Maharashtra produces 516 tonnes of fish through reservoirs. The state fisheries corporation was operating in 6,272 ha of reservoirs and marketing the catches.

Abstract

The seaquake on 26^th December 2004 with its epicenter at Sumatra triggered a tsunami, which had a major impact on South East Asian countries. During that incident, the average height of the tsunami wave was 7-10 m and the penetration of seawater was up to 1-1.5 km. The surface water resources meant for irrigation and other drinking purposes got affected by the ingress of seawater in many areas. The direct environmental impacts of the tsunami have more impact along the entire east coast and caused more damages in coastal systems. The physical and chemical perturbations caused in the coastal zone by the tidal waves are discussed. In order to assess the environmental impact on coastal system, it is suggested that significant physical and biogeochemical factors could be framed to quantify the problems.

Abstract

Fats and oils are one of the five essential ingredients of human diet and the others are protein, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. The oil seeds are major source of edible in world. Oils and fat form an important constituent of human food. Lipid metabolism generates many bioactive lipid molecules, which are fundamental mediators of multiple signaling pathways and they are also indispensable compounds of cell membranes. Many people in developing countries, especially children under five years of age suffer from acute or chronic protein and energy shortages. There is definitely a need for food production to keep pace with the increase in the number of the world’s population. Oilseed and nut should be properly dried before storage, and cleaned to remove sand, dust, leaves and other contaminants. All raw materials should be sorted to remove stones and moudly nuts. Some moulds, especially in the case of groundnuts, can cause aflatoxin poisoning.

Introduction

Oil has been a vital part of people’s regular dietary consumption all over the world and its usage has been found to increase several folds over the decades. The importance of using the appropriate oil for cooking goes a long way in affecting the consumer’s health. Improper methods of oil-aided cooking can lead to cardiovascular diseases and increased cholesterol in the blood (Kumar et al., 2018). There is definitely a need for food production to keep pace with the increase in the number of the world’s population. In order to achieve these national development strategies in many based economy tropical countries on agriculture and biased now towards increasing diversity of food products and consumer in order to alleviate malnutrition and pressure to strengthen and expand based industries on agriculture to ensure that their products are both healthy and safe. Oils and fats for food have used a variety of other applications since prehistoric times, and were easily isolate the source of the fats and oils found useful because of its unique properties.

Abstract

Four bread wheat varieties (PBW-138, PBW-299, PBW-343 and PBW-373), two of durum wheat (PDW-215 and PDW-233) and two of triticale (TL-419 and TL-1210) were milled to obtain 70 percent extraction flour.  The grains and the flour samples of all the varieties were evaluated for proximate composition, rheological properties and pretzel making. Physical properties of durum wheat were better followed by bread wheat and triticale. Durum wheat were harder, had higher grain weight than bread wheat and triticale.  Protein, ash, fat, total sugars and enzyme activity were higher in triticale flour than bread and durum wheat flours while durum flour had higher pigments (ppm, b-carotene). Bread wheat flour was intermediate between durum and triticale flours with respect to fineness. Rheological studies revealed triticale flour to be the weakest flour. Pretzels prepared by using optimized recipe and method revealed PBW-343 and PBW-373 best for pretzel making.

Physicochemical parameters of meat
1. Moisture, ash and fat content
• Meat samples are dried at 105 °C for 24 h for determining the moisture content and for ash content analysis, samples are burned at 525 °C
• Fat determination is done by acidic hydrolysis of the sample
• Sample is boiled initially and then cooled and later, it is filtered, washed and dried
• Thereafter, petroleum ether is used to extract the fat
• Ether is evaporated and the remnant is dried and weighed
2. Protein content
• Often, protein in meat sample is estimated using Kjeldahl method
• The protein content is determined by multiplying the nitrogen content in the meat sample by an appropriate conversion factor
• Strong acid is used to digest the meat sample and the released nitrogen is measured by proper titration technique
• Then, the protein quantity of the sample is determined from the nitrogen concentration of the meat
• Kjeldahl method does not determine the protein content in straightway manner; a conversion factor (F) is required to convert the nitrogen content to protein content
• Usually, a conversion factor of 6.25 (corresponding to 0.16 g nitrogen/g of protein) is used for several food samples

Soil texture and mechanical analysis: The chemistry of the mineral framework was explained in Chapter II. Its physical properties are quite as important- When all the extraneous matter is removed from the soil we are left with a collection of particles of various sizes. These particles are not spherical in shape, but most of them are nearly so. At any rate the discussion is very much simplified if we suppose that they are spherical and the arguments advanced are equally applicable if the shape deviates from the spherical.

Ultrasound is important tool for diagnosis and research that can be compared with other tools like radio-immunoassays. This has become an important tool applicable to farm and pet animals. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of soft tissues and internal organs. Electric current is applied to crystals in the transducer, producing vibrations characteristic of the crystals and resulting in sound waves. The sound beams that pass through the tissues are quite thin and a thin “slice” of tissue is sampled. The two dimensional image produced by ultrasound resemble to histological section. The sound waves are propagated or reflected by various tissues in different ways depending on their thickness and composition. The transducer receives those reflections and converts into electric signals and produces an echo on the ultrasound screen. Grey - scale is the term used for monochrome monitors on which a number of grey shades are distinguishable between black and white and constitute the image of reflected portion of tissue. Non-ecogenic (non echoic) tissues like fluids do not reflect sound waves and appear black on the screen. The echogenic tissues, having dense consistency, appear white as they reflect most portion of sound beam. Sometimes the artifacts create problem in the real image of the organ. These artifacts are created by certain tissues that cause bending or back and forth bouncing or blocking of sound beams. For imaging the reproductive tract of the domestic animals, B-mode (brightness modality), real time scanners are used. The amplitude of returning beams is reflected in the brightness of the dots on the screen. B-mode modulates brightness of the dots or pixels on the screen of echo displayer. The echo signals are presented as brightness of pixel corresponding to the amplitude of signal. The picture should be adjusted for clear display. In B-mode display the time-base brightness should be reduced just below the threshold of visibility so that even the smallest echoes could be visible.

The physio-chemical properties of ice cream strongly influence its processing behaviour, texture, stability, and consumer acceptance. This chapter examines ice cream as a complex multiphase system and discusses important properties including overrun, density, viscosity, freezing behaviour, hardness, scoopability, meltdown, and fat destabilization. It explains how formulation and processing conditions influence these properties and how they relate to sensory quality. The chapter also considers quality-control tests used in industrial ice cream plants and identifies defects associated with physio-chemical imbalance. Understanding these relationships enables manufacturers to establish suitable product targets, diagnose quality problems, optimize formulations, and maintain consistency across different ice cream products.

Introduction

Drought is the most important abiotic factor that adversely affect growth and crop production. Drought stress can altered the normal physiological processes that influence one or a combination of biological factors for yield and yield attributing traits (Ashraf, 2010). The abnormal metabolism due to stress may reduce plant growth (Claves et al., 2002). Production is limited by environmental stresses, according to different scholar estimates, only 10 per cent of the world’s arable land is free from stress, in general, a major factor in the difference between yield and potential performance, environmental stresses. Drought is one of the most common environmental stresses that almost 25 per cent of agricultural lands for agricultural farm products in the world are limited (Loresto, 1976; Chaves, 2002). Drought occurrence in India is also very frequent. Drought occurred in past 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1987, 2002, 2009 and had considerable impact on food grain production. For example, the drought of 1966-67 reduced overall food grains production by 19%. The drought of 1972-73 reduced the food grains production from 108.95 million tonnes to 95 million tonnes, causing a loss of about $ 400 million $. The 1987 drought in India damaged 58.6 million ha of cropped area affecting 285 million people (Ray et al., 2015). Drought in 2002 has reduced food grains production to 174 million tonnes from 212 million tonnes resulting in decline of 3.2% GDP (Rathore et al., 2009; Ray et al., 2015).

The water deficit reduces crop yield due to decrease in photosynthetic area, decreased radiation use efficiency and harvest index (Earl and Davis, 2003). Drought stress affect the water balance and plant metabolisms. Plants under drought conditions use various changes to tolerate stress conditions and increase drought tolerance which includes changes in whole plant, tissue, at physiological and molecular levels. Appearance of a single or a combination of inherent changes determines the ability of the plant to stand under aridity conditions. Tolerant plant adjusts its water balance by osmotic adjustment, deep root systems and by transient leaf rolling.

The seed yield, along with the rate of application and uptake of nutrients, is used to determine the following parameters for nitrogen or other nutrients:

Partial Factor Productivity (PFP) (kg seed/kg N applied): Partial Factor Productivity (PFP) is a measure used in agriculture to assess the efficiency of nutrient use, particularly nitrogen or other essential nutrients, in crop production. It is calculated as the ratio of the seed yield to the rate of nutrient application. The formula for PFP is:

*A higher PFP value indicates greater efficiency, meaning that more crop yield is produced per unit of nutrient applied. This is desirable as it implies that the nutrient is being used more effectively by the crop.

Agronomic Efficiency (AE) (kg seed/kg N applied): Agronomic Efficiency is a measure used to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrient application in increasing crop yield. It specifically assesses the yield gain per unit of nutrient applied. The formula for AE is:

Plants are frequently subjected to environmental stresses such as water deficit, freezing, heat and salt stress. Soil salinity is a major problem in arid and semi- arid regions, where rainfall is insufficient to leach salt and excess of sodium ion down and out of root zone. In Asia, around 21.5 million ha of cultivable land was affected by salinity. India had 8.6 million ha of salinity affected cultivable land. It is observed that the area of salinity has been increasing in India. In Tamil Nadu, the area affected by salinity is around 6 lakh ha. Salinity affected areas are Chengalpattu, Salem, Thanjavur, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri and Ramanathapuram. Salinity is the most serious threats to the agriculture especially in the arid and semi-arid region. The presence of salts in the soil and their effects on the plant physiological mechanisms was major restrictive factor for agricultural productivity. Investigations on such soils have revealed that they were charged with high and abnormal soluble salt concentrations that lowered agricultural yield, limited crop distribution and even lead to extinction of certain species.

Salinity adversely affects plant growth and development, hindering seed germination, seedling growth, enzyme activity, DNA, RNA, protein synthesis and mitosis. There has been a variation in the response of plants to salinity with its growth stages according to quantity and period of exposure to salt. Salinity by competing in nutrition element absorption causes growth reduction. Primary salt injuries include metabolic disturbance and inhibition of growth and development. Secondary salt effects include nutrient deficiency and osmotic dehydration. Excessive amounts of salts, especially sodium chloride (NaCl), in the soil induce osmotic effects, leading to changes in plant metabolism. General symptoms of damage by salt stress are growth inhibition, accelerated development and senescence and death during prolonged exposure. Salt stress causes the reduction of rice yield and severe salt stress may even threaten survival.

Introduction

Phenolic compounds have been shown to be of importance in regulation of plant growth, development and metabolism, therefore now they are not considered as passive by products of any catabolic or anabolic processes. Salicylic acid is one of them and it is a naturally occurring phenolic which has received much attention due to its association with economically important plant responses to disease and other stresses (Raskin, 1992; Borsani et al., 2001; Clarke et al., 2004). Centuries before medical scientists had identified numerous therapeutic effects of salicylates. Leaves and barks of willow tree were used by women as a pain reliever during child birth in 4th century B.C. It also cured aches and fevers. Due to a number of curative properties of willow bark, in 1828 Jahann Buchner, a scientist from Munich had isolated a small amount of silicin - a salicylic alcohol glucoside, the major salicylate in willow bark. In 1838, Rafaela Piria had given the name salicylic acid (SA), from the Latin salix, a willow tree. Further during 19th century SA and other salicylates, mainly methyl esters and glucosides easily convert to SA, isolated from a number of plants. Salicylic acid has an aromatic ring which bears a hydroxyl group or its functional derivative (Fig. 1).

Iron in the terrain’s crust is more oxidized now than it was when life evolved. It has been hypothesized that dissolved ferrous iron could have been a convenient oxygen acceptor and that deposition of oxidized iron in sediments must have taken place before oxygen could have entered the atmosphere in significant quantities. Obviously, during early evolution on this planet, the essential elements are present only in reduced form. Today a number of elements are present only in a highly oxidized form and considerable energy must be expanded to reduce them to a form similar to that on early earth which plants can utilize.

Iron represents essential elements which are usually available in oxidized form but must be reduced, often using metabolic energy, before they can be utilized. For the first time, Gris (1844) observed yellowing of grapevine leaves in absence of iron in the nutrient solution in which these plants were growing. Later, iron was reported to be essential for diverse group of plants. Due to a great variation in iron requirement by different plant species, it is difficult to decide whether iron is a macro or micronutrient.

Abstract

Nitrate uptake from the soil is the first step in nitrate acquisition and utilization by plants. Nitrate uptake and its release into cells is mediated by nitrate transporter(s) located into the plasma membrane of the root. Three transporters have been identified by kinetic measurements in plant roots. These are constitutive high affinity nitrate transporter (cHATS), inducible high affinity nitrate transporter (iHATS) and low affinity nitrate transporter (LATS). Two of these display saturable kinetics; a low capacity constitutive system and a high capacity inducible system. In addition, a non-saturating low affinity, high capacity system becomes apparent only at higher external NO^-₃ concentration. Genes that encode representatives of each class of transport system have been identified and fall into two families: NRT1 and NRT2. Members of these families are induced in response to nitrate in the environment and are regulated by internal signals including nitrogen metabolites and shoot demand for nitrogen. This chapter deals with the physiology and molecular biology of nitrate transporters in higher plants.

Through green revolution, we have developed high yielding varieties albeit with high nutrient requirements putting much more reliance on chemical fertilizers. The major challenge facing plant biology right now is to improve crop production and to feed an expanding world population. This is against a background of pressure on agricultural land use and climate change having negative impacts on growing conditions. The adverse effects of agriculture, and specifically fertilizer use, include damage to the environment, a large carbon footprint for the manufacture and use of agrochemicals, and the utilization of non-renewable resources. One solution is to increase the area of land for agriculture, as well as increasing production while maintaining the current rate of inputs; however, this is predicted to have substantial negative impacts on the environment (Tilman et al., 2002), is unsustainable in terms of phosphate use, and would have a huge economic footprint in terms of energy demands for nitrogenous fertilizer production. The challenge is to increase yield, decrease inputs, and improve resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Improving crop nutrient use efficiency ideally requires an understanding of the whole system, from the macro (agro-ecosystem) to the molecular level.
