INTRODUCTION

Agricultural biodiversity is the basis ofglobal food security. Wide variety of crops, soil and cropping systems are nurtured by human culturaldiversity since times immemorial. Potatois a majorfood crop which is widely acknowledged now. It is consumed by the world’s largest population than any othervegetable, produces more calories and protein per unit of land and time than any other food crop.Potatohas much potentialfor sustainable, non-chemical farming, fits well with many crop rotations,and does very wellwith naturalfertilizers. Over the years chemical based farming has started experiencing reduced production and increased costs, orboth (Singh et al.,2011 and Sreenivasa et al., 2010). Monoculture of crops such as rice, wheat and cotton etc., depletes topsoil of nutrients and reduces diversity of beneficial microbes leading to reduced soil productivity. It is finally making the crop plants vulnerable to parasites and pathogens. Environmental pollution caused bychemical fertilizers and pesticides is posinga serious threat worldwide (Doranet al., 1996). Healthy soil is the foundation upon which sustainable agriculture is built. Farming practices differ mainly based on soil inputs and crop protection measures (Devarinti,2016).Thusthere is growinginterestinorganicallyproducedproducts and farmers are shifting from conventional to organic farming. In India, Sikkim is the firststate where completelyorganic farmingis adopted. Farming practices differ mainly based on soil inputs and crop protection measures (Devarinti, 2016) in different regions. Different types of farming based on use of natural products are described in the chapter.

INTRODUCTION

Potato production in India has shown a steady increase in the past, presently making the country second largest potato producer in the world. As per the latest available data, during 2018-19, approximately 52.5 million metric tons of potatoes have been produced (NHB, 2019). Increase in production, often resulting in gluts at harvest, has led to several post-harvest problems like storage and proper utilization of the produce. About 90% of the potato crop in the countryis harvested during January-February in the Indo-Gangetic plains comprising the states of Punjab, Haryana, UP, Bihar, West Bengal, MP and Gujarat where the harvest is followed by rising temperatures of hot and dry summer, and further by warm and humid rainy season. Since potato tubers contain about 80% water, under such circumstances, a semi-perishable commodity like potato, cannot be stored for more than 3-4 months without refrigeration because of very high losses due to shrinkage, sprouting and attack by microorganisms.

Therefore, potatoes are mostly stored in refrigerated cold stores maintained between 2-4^oC and 90-95% relative humidity (RH). Low temperature storage has advantages of natural control of sprout growth, low evaporative losses and minimum risk of diseases and pests. These conditions are ideal for storage of seed potato but these cause cold-induced sweetening leading to excessive accumulation of sugars in most of the potato cultivars making them unfit for processing due to browning in chips. Also, such tubers are less preferred for consumption because of sweet taste. Hence, potatoes meant for processing are either stored under non-refrigerated conditions for short term or stored at 10-12^oC with the use of some sprout suppressant like CIPC (isopropyl N-(3chlorophenyl) carbamate) to minimize the accumulation of reducing sugars. The chips produced from such tubers are light in colour.

Potato processing on the other hand is essential to sustain the increasing potato production in the country and to provide proper remuneration to the cultivators. Potatoes can be processed into a variety of products. Potato chips, French fries and dehydrated chips are the most popular processed potato products in the organized and unorganized sectors. The present chapter deals with postharvest management of potatoes in terms of dormancy and sprouting issues and storage technologies for seed, table and processing potatoes. Besides, areas suitable for growing processing potatoes in the country, potato processing scenario in the organized and unorganized sectors are also discussed.

Abstract

Plants are an integral component of life in many ethnic communities. Plant-based medicaments have been used since time immemorial as curative and protective agents for prolonging life of humans and animals by combating a plethora of ailments. One such ailment affecting women of reproductive age-group is leucorrhea. The study aimed at systematically documenting the precious traditional knowledge regarding the plants traditionally used for curing leucorrhea in Jammu and Kashmir. A total of 55 infomants (39 females and 16 males) between the age group 25-94 years were selected and interviewed for extracting ethnomedicinal information and 29 plant species belonging to 28 genera and 23 families were observed to be of ethnomedicinal significance in the treatment of leucorrhea in Jammu and Kashmir. Fabaceae was observed to be the frequently encountered family. Bulk of the taxa were observed to grow in wild habitat and majority of them were herbs. Seeds were observed to be of highest therapeutic significance and ethnomedicinal formulations were prepared in the form of powder, decoction, paste, etc and all of these were administered orally. The present study may serve as a base line data for further research and will go a long way in the treatment of leucorrhea thereby promoting well being of women folk. Advanced investigations are required to validate the time-tested information associated with medicinal flora to determine the identity of phytochemicals linked with leucorrhea, so that compounds of pharmacological application having prospective relevance in the alleviation of human maladies may be discovered.

Abstract

For thousands of years, plants have provided medicine to human and animals. People still depend on plants for food and shelter. The present surveys and investigation covers Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary, Kathua District (J&K) situated in Southeastern parts of Asia (India). This communication mainly focused on ten high value plant species belonging to eight families of medicinal value being used to cure different types of ailment growing in Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas of Kathua district. These species are Aerva sanguinolenta (L.) Blume, Centella asiatica L. (Urb.) Fl., Cissampelos pareira L., Colebrookea oppositifolia Sm., Cryptolepis dubia M.R.Almeida, Holarrhena pubescens Wall. ex G.Don, Justicia adhatoda L., Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thomson, Vitex negundo L. and Woodfordia fruticosa (L.) Kurz. It also deal with morphological enumeration, ecology and habitat, ethnobotanical uses and active chemical constituent present in studied plant species.

Abstract

The percentage of people with obesity and diabetes has increased globally both in developed and developing countries but highest burden is on the indigenous people who are also socially disadvantaged. The modern medical treatment of diabetes is based generally on oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin. So, there has always been a search for new anti-diabetic agents which are of lower cost and can cure the disease without harming other body functions. Plants being readily available in the Indian-subcontinent have been an important source of drug in the traditional system of medicine in India since time immemorial. The utilization of plants for alternative treatment to combat diabetes using herbal remedies has also been substantiated by World Health Organization. In this communication, we tried to list some scientifically proven anti-diabetic plants commonly available in the Indian subcontinent which can be used in the treatment and management of diabetes.

Abstract

Plants have been used both in the prevention and cure of various diseases throughout the centuries. An important prerequisite for proper utilization of plants as natural resources is that we should have full knowledge regarding their occurrence, frequency, distribution and phenology. Arisaema jacquemontii Blume (Araceae) is a perennial herb that has been reported in various literatures to be used traditionally in various countries for the treatment of different diseases. Scientific evaluations of this plant have revealed that it harbors various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, phenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins and several other chemical constituents which have pharmacological implications with as antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer and immunomodulatory activities. This chapter collaborates the data with respect to the ethnobotanical and ethno medicinal importance of Arisaema jacquemontii and its role as a natural source of phytoconstituents that have therapeutic implications.

Abstract

Limits to crop production are shrinking land area under cropping, shortage and higher cost of irrigation water, fertilizers, pesticides, electricity, labour wages and harvest and post harvest losses due to non-availability of cold chains and storage spaces. Diversification of crops to high value products is yet to gain momentum. Restrictions in marketing due to APMC acts are to be reviewed and drafted farmer-producer friendly. Forcing of horticultural crops-vegetables, fruits, flowers, spices, aromatic crops-to market fresh produces during off season is getting attention and many such units are established as a part of urban and peri-urban horticulture. Ready to assemble forcing structures are now available. Hi-tech nurseries, integrated soil and water management through fertigation, pests and disease management by bio-pesticides, predators and parasitoids, pheromones and light traps are successfully demonstrated. Space saving horticulture focuses on maximization of productivity and minimization of inputs costs in an eco-friendly and sustainable way.

Abstract

Vegetables are health capsules, being the chief source of vitamins and minerals besides providing other dietary elements like carbohydrates, proteins and even fat and enzymes to some extent, antioxidants and fibre. Though India is the second largest vegetable producer (147 million tones in 2012) in the world, per capita supply and consumption of vegetables in India is very low (160 g day ^-1). It is now realized that the problems of satisfying hunger and nutrition are much beyond the realm of food crops alone and therefore, to supplement and balance our diet, more vegetables are to be included. Vegetables not only provide nutritional security in rural areas but also financial security to small and marginal land holders growing vegetables in the hinterlands of urban markets. Commercialization of vegetable production is the scene of the day as they are money spinners in domestic markets and dollar earners in global markets. To compete in the domestic and global market and for year round supply of quality produce, protected or greenhouse cultivation of vegetables is imperative. Water and nutrients are the top most growth and production inputs in any crop cultivation and vegetables are no exception to this. In order to get the potential yields with matching quality of vegetables grown under protected cultivation, the best of the management strategies to supply water and nutrients is needed. In this direction, drip fertigation is the best option for efficient supply of irrigation water and fertilizer nutrients for greenhouse grown vegetable crops. The studies carried in different parts of the world have clearly indicated that fertigation technology resulted in substantial yield increase with marked enhancement of water and nutrient productivity.

Abstract

High altitudes may be cold and humid or cold or arid ones making the requirements of protected cultivation entirely different in both the conditions. The present chapter is based on the environmental conditions existing in Leh region. Near sub-zero temperature with snow in higher altitudes makes vegetable production tough without use of techniques of protected cultivation. Protected cultivation has witnessed gradual developments from riverbed cultivation practices to use of several types of plastics (PP, PE, PVC etc.) and UV stabilized polythene sheets. Area under protected cultivation is spread worldwide mainly in countries like Holland, Spain, Isaral, China , Japan etc. Protected cultivation technology provides favorable climate for production of vegetable &/or their seedlings of superior quality even in the extreme adverse climate outside. Such structure exploits solar thermal energy to improve photosynthetic efficiency of the plants grown inside. This green house effect is very helpful in winters at high altitudes. Similarly, some modifications in these structures are needed to low the temperature during summers. A number of advantages with some limitations can be listed that are associated with the protected cultivation. At high altitudes, three methods viz. Polyhouse/Greenhouse /Net /shaded house, Low tunnels or row covers and plastic mulching can be used. Polyhouse is a framed structure with 200 micron UV stabilized low density cladding forming a greenhouse effect. Underground trench type polyhouse can also be made with polyethylene supported on wooden poles or GI pipes. Though a combination of above two known as polyench was found performing better in Ladhak area. Low tunnels or row cover use transparent plastic films or net over low hoops to cover rows of plants. Mulching is covering the soil around plants to conserve soil moisture, temperature, preventing weeds etc. using transparent and black plastics of 10-25micron thickness. Double colored plastic mulches are being tested for different crops and different seasons. In arid high altitudes, DRDO (through DIHAR, Leh) has worked extensively on protected cultivation and developed production technologies in the service of nation. Its contribution includes making possible the production of nursery, cucurbits and several other vegetables and their seeds in sub zero climatic conditions. Now, there is a need to develop more area specific, more appropriate, efficient and economic protection structures. Simultaneous development of tools, machinery and vegetable varieties suitable for use in protected conditions are among the major aspects of future work to be done in this field.

TQM is an integrative philosophy of management for continuously improving the quality of products and processes. It is used around the world.

TQM functions on the premise that the quality of products and processes is the responsibility of everyone who is involved with the creation or consumption of the products or services offered by an organization. In other words, TQM capitalizes on the involvement of management, workforce, suppliers, and even customers, in order to meet or exceed customer expectations. Considering the practices of TQM as discussed in six empirical studies, Cua, McKone, and Schroeder (2001) identified the nine common TQM practices as cross-functional product design, process management, supplier quality management, customer involvement, information and feedback, committed leadership, strategic planning, cross-functional training, and employee involvement.

TQM and Six Sigma

The Six Sigma management strategy originated in 1986 from Motorola’s drive towards reducing defects by minimizing variation in processes. The main difference between TQM and Six Sigma is the approach Six Sigma is a business management strategy originally developed by Motorola, USA in 1986. As of 2010, it is widely used in many sectors of industry, although its use is not without controversy.

Fracture healing is a complex process in which damaged bone restores its original architecture through a cascade of molecular and cellular events. The process of fracture healing is unique, in that it does not form a poorly organized replacement matrix, otherwise known as scar tissue, but rather regenerates the original matrix and retains its mechanical properties. Normal fracture and bone repair follows a known sequence of events includes: haematoma formation, inflammation, angiogenesis, osteogenesis, and bone remodeling.

For the repair of bone defects, a tissue engineering approach would be to combine cells capable of osteogenic (i.e. bone-forming) activity with an appropriate scaffolding material to stimulate bone regeneration and repair. An ideal tissue-engineered bone substitute should possess 3 elements: osteoprogenitor cells, osteoinductive factors, and an osteoconductive scaffold, and is considered as a potential substitute for autologous bone transplantation. Tissue engineering approaches have proven very effective in bone regeneration recently, and the successful repair of bone defects has been demonstrated in larger animals like canine, goat and sheep.

Stem cells from adult tissues are attractive materials for cell therapy, gene therapy, and tissue engineering. These cells generally have restricted lineage potential when compared to embryonic stem cells, and this may be advantageous in certain therapeutic applications. Till and McCulloch in 1961 describes the presence of hematopoietic progenitor cells in bone marrow. After this, the concept of MSCs is brought to light by Friedenstein and co-workers who demonstrated the osteogenic potential of BM cells by heterotrophic transplantation.

Carrot, radish, turnip and beet root are major root crops grown in India. In addition, root crops like rutabaga, parsnip, parsley, chervil and celeriac are grown in a limited scale in different parts of the world. There are several other roots and modified underground plant parts that grow in forests and consumed by tribes, but they are not commercially cultivated. Carrot, radish, turnip and beet root are generally consumed as cooked vegetables or fresh salads or as pickled vegetables.

5.1. Carrot

Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family, named after the umbrella-like f lower clusters that plants in this family produce. As such, carrots are related to parsnips, fennel, parsley, anise, caraway, cumin and dill. Carrot, Daucus carota L. is believed have been primarily originated in Afghanistan, South western Asia and Mediterranean region. Daucus carota ssp. Carota is the most common wild form in Europe and South West Asia, and the present day cultivated carrots have most probably originated from this sub-species.

Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Assam are the major producers of carrot in India.

Cultivars/Varieties: Varieties with long, orange coloured and smooth roots are preferred in India. Both indigenous and exotic varieties having different root length, shape and colour are grown. Temperate or European type varieties are Nantes, Half long, Early Nantes, Chantenay, Chaman, Pusa Yamadagni and Ooty-1, which require low temperature of 4-8°C for flowering. Tropical or Asiatic type varieties do not require low temperature for flowering and can be grown in plains also. The varieties belonging to this group are Pusa Kesar, Pusa Meghali and Hisar Gairic. Some varieties like Gold King, Indian Kuroda and Super Kuroda are also marketed by private seed companies.

One of the most important aspects of describing distribution is the central value around which the observations are distributed. A statistical measure used for representing the centre of central value of a set of observations is known as “Measure of Central Tendency”. This central value is also called as ‘Average’. The commonly used measures of central tendency are as follows;

Weed Ecology

Ecology is the study of reciprocal relationship between organisms and their environments. The ecology of weed is thus concerned with growth characteristics and adaptations that enable weeds to exploit the ecological niches left open in those environments altered by man for his use and the survival mechanisms where by weeds persist in such environments. In simple words weed ecology is reciprocal relationship of weeds with their environments. Weeds grow voluntarily in all crops raised by human beings since ancient ecology of weeds is divided into two categories (types).

1. Weed Auto Ecology

It is study of only one population i.e. how an individual species in a population interacts with its environment at all stages of its life cycle. So, in case of auto ecology competition within same species (intraspecific) or with crop plants (inter specific competition) is studied.

2. Weed Synecology

The study of relationships between communities of different weed species with their environment is called weed synecology. Different weed species grow in certain combinations and in specific patterns in the ûeld. The population of different weed species interact with the external environmental conditions and among themselves. Weed communities differ from field to field and crop to crop in the same locality. The community character is dynamic and changes in form and composition of weed flora takes place in course of time due to some external and internal factors prevailing in the community. This process is called ecological succession. With the passage of time there will be series of changes in the composition of weed community which ultimately results in stable community. This is termed as climax community.

The North-East Hilly Region (NER) has a good dairy and animal husbandry infrastructure and climatic condition conducive for raring high yielding dairy animals. Other than acting as a supplementary source of family nutrition, dairying is more as a source of livelihood as 90 per cent of the milk is sold out. The various dairy development programme and schemes launched in the region provide the necessary backward and forward linkages to the dairy farmers in term of feed and veterinary aids and collection, processing and marketing of milk. Considering the changing trends of competitiveness in the dairy market and dairy enterprise as such there is a need for a scientific and technological intervention to transform the traditional dairy farming system into a modern and profitable enterprise. The farmers need to be trained and exposed to modern dairy farming system in order to survive in the long run. The outlook for milk production has changed a lot and people are more concerned on the quality of milk and so necessary emphasis has to be made on clean milk production. To order to use the resources effectively and in order to sustain dairying there is a need to upgrade or replace the low yielding animals by high yielding breed/ variety. The SWOT analysis gives a strong signal for opportunities and avenues for further development of dairying in the region. To harness the opportunities of dairying a strong dairy supply chain need to be developed in an organized manner starting from milk producer to ultimate consumer.

Since seed deterioration is irreversible process and the rate of deterioration might be arrested using proper packaging material, moisture proof packaging material are very effective for preserving seed viability, germination ability, vigour and other quality traits of orthodox seed. For the locations, with inadequate storage facilities and high humidity, moisture proof material is favoured. The use of high cost material is justified considering the advantage under such conditions in terms of maintaining the quality of the seeds.

In hills, farmers usually store their own seed for sowing in the next season. The uncertainty about the availability of good quality seed at proper time in the remote hilly areas develops a habit in the farmers for storing their own seed. This chapter attempts to highlight the different methods/sources of packaging of seed and their relevant advantages and limitations.

Among different containers polyethylene bags appear to be promising packaging material for storage since it is effective in preserving seed viability longer, are easily available, less expensive and need less space for storage.

Introduction

‘Cole crops’ is a general term used to describe several vegetables in the Brassicaceae family. It is an important and highly diversified group of vegetable crops grown worldwide that belongs to Brassica oleracea (Monteiro and Lunn, 1998) and includes particularly six Brassica crops (cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale and knol kohl). All of these crops can trace their history to a common ancestry of wild cabbage originating in the Mediterranean and Asia Minor regions. Cole crops are one of the oldest cultivated plant groups in the world. They are cultivated in Europe since very ancient time from where they have spread to other parts of the world (Nieuwhof, 1969). All the cole crops (except few cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage types) require chilling temperatures for about two months to transform from vegetative phase into reproductive phase. However, the period of chilling requirement differs according to the kind of crop and varieties. Cole crops are also commonly called as European or biennial vegetables due to their cool temperatures requirements and two season requirement to complete their life cycle.

Major Resources of Cole Crop Germplasm

Germplasm is any form of the hereditary material from an organism. Genetic resources encompass all the various forms of germplasm that are available for collection, storage and use. The genetic diversity of crops, represented by traditional local cultivars and wild relatives has been disappearing rapidly during recent decades. Initial concern was noted by H.V. Harlan in the 1930s (Harlan and Martini, 1936) but by the 1960s, modern plant breeding and land-use changes accelerated loss and stimulated the realization that genetic resources in regions of diversity were being lost at an alarming rate. To conserve the genetic variation within the cole group, a comprehensive base collection of the cultivated forms of Brassica oleracea has been established at the vegetable gene bank of Horticulture Research International (HRI), Wellesbourne, (U.K.). Gene banks have also been established at Instiuut de veredeling van Tuinbouwgewssen, Wageningen, the Netherlands and the Instituto del Germoplasm, Bari, Italy (Van der Meer et al., 1984) for conservation of genetic resources. The International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) has recognized HRI as an international centre for conservation of Brassica oleracea (Innes, 1975). Large number of collections of cole crops is also available with the United States Department of Agriculture, Plant Introduction Service. In India, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi has been assigned the duty of conserving the germplasm of all crops, including vegetables. Germplasm of all the cole crops is being maintained at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi (tropical types) and its regional station at Katrain (temperate types). Other major institutes maintaining germplasm of cole crops include Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan and SKUAS&T, Srinagar.

2.1. Introduction

The engine is the source that generates power. It transforms chemical energy in fuel into mechanical energy for power. Diesel internal combustion engines are invariably used in all the tractors. In these engines, very high compression of the air ignites the fuel as compared to spark plug that ignites fuel in petrol engines. The air in the diesel engine is compressed with a compression ratio typically between 15 and 22 resulting in a 40 bar (about 600 psi) pressure as compared to 8 to 14 bar (about 200 psi) in the petrol engine. This high compression heats the air to 550°C (1022°F). At about this moment, small droplets of fuel are sprayed in an atomized form directly into the compressed air in the combustion chamber.

2.2. How does it work?

Any engine will work with four strokes, namely suction, compression, power and exhaust (Fig 2.1). It will also complete two revolutions of the crankshaft. In the suction stroke, pure air is drawn into the cylinder through the inlet valve. The exhaust valve gets closed and the crankshaft completes half a revolution. In the compression stroke, the piston moves up while the valves remain closed. The air which is drawn into the cylinder during the suction stroke is compressed. There is a rise in temperature. The hot air ignites the fuel injected into the cylinder. The crankshaft again completes half a revolution. In the power stroke, the hot products of combustion, viz., carbon dioxide and nitrogen expand. The piston is forced down. The valves remain closed and the crankshaft completes half a revolution. In the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens while the piston reaches the lowest point of travel. Then the burnt gases are swept out.

1. INTRODUCTION

In general, seed dormancy refers to lack of growth due to any external or internal cause. It also refers to a state in which viable seeds fail to germinate even when given favourable environmental condition i.e. adequate moisture, appropriate temperature regime, a normal atmosphere and in some cases light.

There are various degrees of dormancy varying from very slight to very strong (deep). Sometimes the development or degree of dormancy changes during the lifetime of the seed, usually as a response to external conditions. Hence, dormancy may be innate, develop, be broken and redevelop in seed.

Several types of dormancy exist, and sometimes more than one type of dormancy occurs in the same seed. In nature, dormancy is broken gradually or by a particular environmental event. The type of event that may break dormancy depends on dormancy type. Dormancy caused by a hard seed coat may be overcome by a gradual or an instant abrasion, and darkness induced dormancy by exposure to light. In seed handling, the natural dormancy breaking mechanism is applied or simulated during the process of pretreatment. “Pretreatment” is a term used for conditions or processes applied to break dormancy prior to germination, while “treatment” is used for application of pesticides for control of pests and diseases.

1. INTRODUCTION

In plants, seed dormancy is controlled by temperature, light and hormones. Unlike animals, which secrete hormones from special glands, hormones are always present in plant cells. Each plant hormone plays multiple roles, depending on the site of action, the life stage of the plant and the hormone’s concentration. A plant hormone is any chemical that is produced in one part of the plant that has a targeted function elsewhere. Certain hormones induce and keep seeds in a dormant state, while others cause seeds to break dormancy and initiate germination They are stored in regions where stimulus are and then released for transport through either phloem or mesophyll when the appropriate stimulus occurs. These are chemical messengers influencing many patterns of plant development

The first theory is that the five classic plant hormones, auxin, cytokinins (CKs), gibberellins (GAs), ethylene, and abscisic acid (ABA), plus the new plant hormones, brassinosteroids (BAs), and salicylates or salicylic acids (SAs) can be gathered into three groups. These are growth hormones, stress hormones and shock hormones. Auxin and CKs are growth hormones. Ethylene, GAs, and brassinosteroids are stress hormones. ABAs and SAs are shock hormones. All three types of hormones are similar in that they fall within the classic definition of an intercellular hormone. They are made by a cell and are meant to affect the behavior of other cells, either in nearby tissue or at the opposite end of the plant.

ABA, also known as abscisic acid plays a direct role in dormancy release and germination. Ethylene and the gibberellins group of hormones are indirectly involved.

Role of Male and Female Extension Workers

Extension Workers include all persons working in the field for improving the qulaity of life of people. In our field, Gomitras, Livestock Inspector, VAS, BVO, etc are all extension workers because some way or other they are involved in promotion of livestock activites in the field. The role of extension worker working with rural people is to bring necessary change inindividual and collective behaviour and motivating them. The role of male and female extension worker is not very distinct. However, in some backward communities, the role of the female extension worker to motivate women, is found to be very encouraging. Here, we will discuss the important roles of both male and female Extension workers.

An extension worker should arouse farmers to recognize and take interest in their problems, to overcome these problems, to teach them how to do so, to persuade them to act on his teaching, so that they ultimately achieve a sense of satisfaction and pride in their achievements.

National Agriculture Development Programme/Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY)

Economic reforms initiated since 1991 have put the Indian economy on a higher growth trajectory. Annual growth rate in the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has accelerated from below 6 per cent during the initial years of reforms to more than 8 per cent in recent years. The Planning Commission in its approach paper to the Eleventh Five-Year-plan has stated that 9 per cent growth rate in GDP would be feasible during the Eleventh Plan period. However, Agriculture that accounted for more than 30 per cent of total GDP at the beginning of reforms failed to maintain its pre-reform growth. On the contrary, it witnessed a sharp deceleration in growth after the mid-1990s. This happened despite the fact that agricultural productivity in most of the states was quite low as it were, and the potential for the growth of agriculture was high. The GDP of agriculture increased annually at more than 3 per cent during the 1980s.

Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996 to 2001-02), India has been targeting a growth rate of more than 4 per cent in agriculture, but the actual achievement has been much below the target. More than 50 per cent of the workforce of the country depends upon agriculture for it’s livelihood and slow growth in Agriculture and allied sectors can lead to acute stress in the economy because a large proportion of population depend on this sector. A major cause behind the slow growth in agriculture is the consistent decrease in investments in the sector by the state governments. While public and private investments are increasing manifold in sectors such as infrastructure, similar investments are not forthcoming in Agriculture and allied sectors, leading to distress in the community of farmers, especially that of the small and marginal segment. Hence, the need for incentivising states that increase their investments in the Agriculture and allied sectors has been felt.

3.1 Introduction

The world population will grow by another 2 billion people by 2025 and feeding them will be a big challenge. Rapid industrial development and fast urbanization, the arable lands are continuously shrinking. Many scientists and researchers reported that the Earth had lost a third of its arable lands over the last 40 years¹. In the current scenario, the most challenging task for agricultural sciences is to ensure for continuous and enough supply of food to growing human civilization. Presently, all available arable land on the earth are using extensive pesticides and fertilizers in various ways that are not sustainable as well as harmful to the environment.

There is an urgent need to think about sustainable farming options as arable land for farming is continuously reducing to fulfil the food material demand of growing population. Vertical farming can produce more food from fewer land and water resources. Though it takes out many of the risks inherent in outdoor crop production. With the control of light exposure, indoor temperature, relative humidity and watering levels, growers can grow food very efficiently. Vertical farming has the potential to produce food with less energy, less water, less waste and in less space than traditional methods. It also negates the need for harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Developing and installing vertical farm in those areas where people need good quality healthy food, tackle the shortage of nutritive food material at a local level. Vertical farming can be defined as it is the practice of growing crops in vertically stacked layers where controlled-environment agriculture practices usually incorporated with the aims to optimize plant growth. The soilless farming techniques such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics also incorporated in vertical farming as shown in Fig. 3.1. Vertical farming is a very old idea, and indigenous peoples used vertically layered growing techniques like the rice terraces of East Asia. The term vertical farming was coined by American geologist Gilbert Ellis Bailey in 1915. In 1999, Dickson Despommier, a professor at New York’s Columbia University, popularized the modern idea of vertical farming, building upon the idea together with his students.

Abstract

Sustainable agriculture is vital in today’s world as it offers the potential to meet our agricultural needs, something that conventional agriculture fails to do. Current soil management strategies are mainly dependent on inorganic chemical fertilizers, which caused a serious threat to human health and environment. To overcome the ecological problems resulting from the loss of plant nutrients and to increase crop yields in the absence of resources for obtaining costly fertilizers, microscopic organisms that allow more efficient nutrient use or increase nutrient availability can provide sustainable solutions for the present and future agricultural practices. Microbial populations are instrumental to fundamental processes that drive stability and productivity of agro-ecosystems. Several investigations addressed at improving understanding of the diversity, dynamics and importance of soil microbial communities and their beneficial and cooperative roles in agricultural productivity. Thus the technique, which uses microscopic organism as biofertilizer, is environment friendly and ensures safe and healthy agricultural products. In this chapter we aim to provide a brief overview of potential use of biofertilizer for attaining sustainability of agro-ecosystem.

Abstract

The unique characteristics of mare’s milk help to prevent many chronic diseases. The health beneficial properties of this milk is even acknowledged since ancient time and this milk is being successfully used as medicated food against a wide range of chronic diseases. The merits of mare’s milk has also been noted by the cosmetic and pharmacy industries. Lastly, considering many health beneficial effects of this milk, attempt should be made to augment the production and popularization of mare’s milk. In this chapter different aspects of mare’s milk has been pointed out in different sections and subsections.

Introduction

Globally, 16.9% of milk consumed by humans comes from species other than cattle. Non-cattle milk is linked more to territories than cows’ milk: sheep in the Mediterranean basin, horse in Central Asia, yak in Himalayas, camel in desert regions. The domestic equid species (horse and donkey) belong to the taxonomic order Perissodactyla, family Equidae and genus Equus. The nutritional and therapeutic properties of horse (Equus caballus) milk have been known since ancient times according to the historian Erodoto (V century BC). Although horses are of minor importance for milk production in comparison with cows, buffalo, sheep and goats, they have been traditionally important dairy animals in Mongolia and in the southern states of the former Soviet Union, e.g., Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Aristotle (322 BC) reported the existence of a dairy product in Mongolia that processed mare’s milk to transform it into a fermented product with an alcohol content of 3% and Herodotus also reported something very similar performed by the Scythians;

Abstract

Milk is the almost complete and highly nutritious food for mammals, as it supplies all the energy and nutrients needed for the proper growth and development of the neonate. Milk proteins are considered the most key source of bioactive peptides and an increasing number of bioactive peptides have been identified in fermented dairy products and milk protein hydrolysates,. These bioactive peptides are sequences between 2 and 20 amino acids that improve the physiological functions and inhibit chronic diseases. The bioactive peptides are inactive within the sequence of the origin protein and can be released by addition of various types of proteolytic enzymes, coagulation enzymes and starter culture during milk processing. Once bioactive peptides are release in the body, these peptides may act as regulatory compounds with hormone-like activity. Furthermore, bioactive peptides from milk proteins have many biological activities such as antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antithrombotic, antioxidant, mineral binding, and anti-diabetic. Due to their physiological and physico-chemical variability, milk bioactive peptides are considered as greatly important components for health stimulating foods or pharmaceutical applications. Over the past few decades, major advances and developments have been achieved on the novel bioactive peptide and commercial applications of bioactive components which are present naturally in the milk. The aim of this chapter is to focus on the bioactive peptide present in milk, extraction of bioactive peptide, functional capability of bioactive peptides in milk and their importance in human health including bio active peptide based commercial dairy products.

Introduction

In agriculture and public health sectors, a variety of pesticides are still in uses that are toxic chemicals and having broad-spectrum actions. They kill target species but also harm the ecosystem seriously by affecting desirable organisms, thus, badly impairing prey-predator relationship. Most of these pesticides are persistent or non-biodegradable and hence exhibit biological magnification by accumulating at higher concentration in the organism, which are on the top of the food chain. The other drawbacks of repeated use of pesticides are eradication of natural enemies of pests, increased level of pesticide residues in soil, water, food and fodder crops, resistance of pests to pesticides and resurgence of minor pests in addition to the environmental pollution. It is clear that once used pesticide may persist, somewhere causing serious harm to the mankind and his ecosystem.

The increasing incidence of pesticide harms is fueling the need for new pesticides, which are toxicologically safe, more selective and efficacious and environment-friendly. Now the natural compounds, thus, have increasingly become the focus of those interested in discovery of pesticides. Tens of thousands of secondary products of plants have been identified and there are estimates that hundreds of thousands of these compounds exist. There is growing evidence that most of these compounds are involved in the interaction of plants with other species-primarily the defense of the plants from plant pests. Thus, these secondary compounds represent a large reservoir of chemical structures with biological activity. This resource is largely untapped for use as pest management agents^3, 4. The extraction of such chemicals from plants and derivatives of potent compounds are being encouraged all over the world under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches. The natural compounds and their synthetic derivatives are more selective in action, completely biodegradable and environment-friendly. In short, natural ways of pests control have already been established and are receiving much attention these days.

Types of Confectionery

Confectionery also called sweets or candy is sweet food product. Confectionery is divided into two broad and somewhat overlapping categories, Bakers’ Confections and Sugar Confections. Confections are low in micronutrients and protein but high in calories. They may be fat-free foods, although some confections, especially fried doughs, are high-fat foods. Many confections are considered to give empty calories.

Baker’s Confectionery

Baker’s confectionery also called flour confections includes principally sweet pastries, cakes, and similar baked goods. In the Middle East and Asia, flour-based confections are more dominant. Baker’s confectionery includes sweet baked goods, especially those that are served for the dessert course. Baker’s confections are sweet foods that feature flour as a main ingredient and are baked. Major categories include cakes, sweet pastries, doughnuts, scones, and cookie.

Ornamental fishes are very prone to diseases due to their captive habitat. Fish health management is an important issue of concern at all the ornamental fish production facility. Proper water quality is required to be maintained in the aquarium for the good health of the fish. However, the chance of infection in these fishes is very high. Many limiting factors viz. water quality, over crowding, nutritionally imbalance food, rapid fluctuation in water temperature, lack of oxygen or poor husbandry practices influence the health status of the stock. The symptoms/signs indicate whether the fish is suffering from a particular disease or not. If the fish are observed to be swimming actively and there is no noticeable abnormality in the behaviour, it means there is nothing to worry about the health of the fish in the aquarium. On the other hand, diseased fish may look off colour, restless and/or behave erratically. In such a situation, the fish should be closely observed for visible infection and remedial measures should be taken immediately. Stock improvement in terms of disease prevention must be a top priority issue. In order to achieve healthy fish species, it is necessary to have a health management protocols in every farming practices.

Horticulture is a wide field and includes a great variety and diversity of crops. In general, these crops are classified as follows:

1. Crops grown for the food and/or vitamin and mineral content, for e.g., apple and sweet potato.

2. Crops grown for their beverage properties, for e.g., tea and coffee.

3. Crops grown to beautify the environment, for e.g., the grasses of the well planned lawn.

4. Crops grown to express sentiments, for e.g., cut roses, jasmine.

5. Crops grown for perfume for e.g., rose, jasmine.

6. Crops grown for spices for e.g., pepper, nutmeg.

Training and pruning of horticultural crops is very important practice to obtain a strong frame work of tree and sustained productivity. It is necessary to understand the various terms used to make the subject more comprehendible.

Crotch: It is the angle made by the scaffold limb to the trunk or the secondary branch to the scaffold limb.

Head: The point on the trunk from which first branch arises.

Leader: It is the main stem growing from ground level up to the tip dominating all other branches.

Low head trees: Trees in which scaffold branches arise within 60-70 cm height from the ground level.

High head trees: Trees in which the scaffold branch arise 120 cm above the trunk.

Scaffold branches: The main branches arising from the head are known as scaffold branches.

Introduction

India is one of the agriculturally important countries in the world and has strong net-work of agriculture education, research and extension. As per the historical record India is committed to thrive and excel independently. During 1965–66, India imported food grains from the US under PL-480 scheme, and the situation was “ship-to-mouth”. This condition was also exacerbated with the growing population which made India to increase its food production at most priority with commitment. With the introduction of high yielding semi dwarf varieties of rice from IRRI, The Philippines and wheat from Mexico which combined with right policies of government to provide essential inputs and market facilities, credit etc. revolutionized the Indian agriculture. In addition to these innovative ideas and policies the food production reached to the level of self-sufficiency until today. For instance the food production during 1950-51 was 54 million tonnes and reached to 285 million tonnes during 2018-19. After the fourth five year plan, India made its stand of self-sufficiency even affected by any year of worst drought. Later, the focus had been given on agricultural research and education in the country for sustaining self-sufficiency in agriculture sector at all times of change of conditions within the country and also globally. Although more than 65 per cent of rural population is depend on agriculture sector, the average monthly income is about Rs. 6500. It reveals that under employment and large population in India depend on agriculture which is unsustainable (Rena, 2003). Therefore, it is needed to books the rural economy, create new infrastructure and other innovations in this sector. India has been emphasizing for innovative techniques. The main advantage for India is the richest natural resources and need only planning and execution on innovation front.

Introduction

In India the economy is based on rural and agrarian and decline with land holding area poses a serious challenge to the sustainability and profitability of farming. In view of the decline in per capita availability of land from 0.5 ha in 1950-51 to 0.15 ha by the turn of the century and a projected further decline to less than 0.1 ha by 2020, it is imperative to develop strategies and innovate new agricultural technologies that enable adequate employment and income generation, especially for small and marginal farmers who constitute more than 80% of the farming community. The crop and cropping system based perspective of research needs to make way for farming systems based research conducted in a holistic manner for the sound management of available resources by small farmers (Jha, 2003). Under the gradual shrinking of land holdings, it is necessary to integrate land based enterprises like fishery, poultry, duckery, apiary, field and horticultural crops, etc. within the bio-physical and socio-economic environment of the farmers to make farming more profitable and dependable (Behera et al., 2004). No single farm enterprise is likely to be able to sustain the small and marginal farmers without resorting to integrated farming systems (IFS) for the generation of adequate income and gainful employment year-round (Mahapatra, 1992; 1994). Farming systems approach, therefore, is a valuable approach to address the problems of sustainable economic growth for the farming communities in India.

Introduction

The natural economic movement of a country goes from agrarian economy which is the primary sector to an industrial economy (secondary sector) and then only to the tertiary sector i.e., service economy. But due to various socio-economic factors, India has jumped from an agrarian economy to a service economy in the past and had a low growth in secondary sector.

Though primary sector is vital, there is a natural limit on how much can be extracted from this. The country is witnessing a peak in food grains production (285.21 million tonnes) nonetheless rupees 92,000 crores worth food grains are wasted annually (MOFPI annual report 2018-19). Hence, with an increasing population, decreasing arable land (52.6%), irrigation water resources and with present level of climate change scenario, food processing should be considered as a need to enhance the profitability and sustainability of agriculture in the country (Swaminathan and Bhavani, 2013). Thus, effective post-harvest management is one of the strategies for envisaging an evergreen revolution along with increasing yields. A well-developed food processing industry increases farm gate prices reduce wastages, ensure value addition, promote crop diversification, generate employment opportunities as well as export earnings.

Introduction

The protected cultivation aims to create a favorable environment for harnessing maximum potential even in adverse climatic conditions. Farmers in India are facing different challenges including small and fragmented land holdings, climate change, vagaries of weather, poor soil health and lack of knowledge and exposure to modern agricultural technologies. The protected cultivation farming is emerging as one of the better alternatives in agriculture and gaining foothold in India. However, for successful protected cultivation farming, one needs to understand the protected cultivation structures, climate control, production technologies, plant protection, water management, marketing, guidelines and policies. At present, various innovations are adopted under the greenhouse technology viz., Soil based cultivation and soil less cultivation. Soil less cultivation consist of solid media based and liquid media based. Solid media include coco-peat, vermiculite, perlite, rice husk, sawdust, mass grass, wheat - paddy straw, sand, gravels, rock wool etc. whereas liquid based media include hydroponic, aeroponic and aquaponics cultivation.

Introduction

India is predominantly an agricultural economy and about half of the workforce is engaged in agriculture sector. Around 48 per cent of households in the country are agricultural household and they derive the monthly income from crop cultivation. India is leading in production of many agricultural crops but finding a market for marketed surplus and getting fair prices have always been a major challenge. Long time ago, traditional market system was existed in India. Marketing implied greater magnitude as yields and production started rising after farmers embraced with advanced technologies such as high-yielding varieties, fertilizers, chemical inputs, block chain development, farmers business network, market linkages, diversification towards high value crops, integrated farming system approach, precision farming including digital agriculture, drones, GIS technology, remote sensing, soil health management, crop and livestock insurance, mobile apps, web portal, machine learning and many mores. These catered the need of efficient regulated marketing system to support the farmers and keep away from them getting manipulated in the market.

India has gained self-sufficiency in the agriculture production. There is need to translate this production into better remuneration for the farming community by focusing into agricultural marketing system. The agricultural marketing system is characterized by various short comings like heavy sale of commodities at primary level immediately after the harvesting period, absence of on-farm grading of produce, poor packaging, insufficient marketing infrastructure, long marketing channels, existence of various malpractices in the marketing of agri-produce, nontransparent price discovery mechanism, lack of market information system, low marketable surplus especially of small and marginal farmers, etc.

Rising population and increasing demand for food are prominent factors driving the digital farming market. Moreover, the growing demand to efficiently deal with pests, weeds, and other diseases is encouraging farmers to digitize their farm. In developing regions, cheaper internet data and strong penetration of smart devices (especially smartphones) are driving the digital farming market. Active participation of governments in digitizing farms through investment is also driving the digital farm market.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) has emerged from the status of a home garden plant to that of commercial orchards and is popular with the farmers because it is one of the few fruits which fruits throughout the year, give quick and high returns, requires less area per tree and adapts itself to diverse soil and climatic conditions. It is an important fruit of tropical and mild subtropical regions of the country. Though India is the leading producer of this fruit, the productivity (43.27 MT/ha) is below it’s potentially (100 t/ ha). In India, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are important centres of its production.

Origin and Distribution

Papaya is native to tropical America, from Southern Mexico through the Andes of South America. It was spread to the south by Indians, and throughout the Caribbean with Spanish exploration. It was spread in 16^th century to other parts of the world. The Spanish also carried it to Europe and the Pacific Islands. By the mid 17th century, papaya was distributed pan tropically. Papaya was introduced to Hawaii in the 1800s, and Hawaii remains the only state in the USA to produce papaya commercially. Now it is grown in all tropical and sub-tropical countries like Australia, Hawaii, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, Peru, Florida, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. It was introduced in India in 16^th century by Portuguese. There are leading producer countries in the world which are India, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Dominican republic, Nigeria, Democratic republic of the congo, Cuba, Thailand and Venezuela (Bolivarian republic).

India, is the worldwide leading producer of papaya and its principal exportation market is focused on Gulf countries. The papaya cultivation in India was 138 with production 5989 (‘000 hectare production ‘000 metric tones) in 2017–18 and it was 146 with production 6096 (‘000 hectare production ‘000 metric tones) 2018–2019. At harvested area rank, Mexico is the fifth papaya harvester, with 17,500 hectares. The maximum area in Gujarat followed by Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Chhattisgarh; and production is maximum in Andhra Pradesh followed by Gujarat and Karnataka, Anony, 2019.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is an important fruit tree of semi-arid and arid regions. It grows well under poor desertic soils due to its hardy plant characteristics and deep root system. It is also one of the most suitable fruit trees, which can be easily grown under saline conditions. In arid region, crop production is risky preposition, where date palm cultivation contributes in achieving food security, high nutritive value food, crop diversification, desertification control, income generation and foreign exchange earnings. It can be grown at such places where adequate irrigation facilities are available besides other climatic requirements.

The latin name of the date palm, Phoenix dactylifera is derived from a Phoenician name “Phoenix”, which means date palm and dactylifera derived from a Greek word “daktulos” means a finger. In India, generally two species of Phoenix are found. Out of which, Phoenix sylvestris Roxb. called “desi khajoor” is found throughout the country but it produces inferior quality fruits. The fruit contains large stone with less pulp content. From its crown parts, a liquid is extracted known as neera or taddi, which is used as fresh drinks and also for preparation of jaggary. The tree of wild date/ desi khajoor (Phoenix sylvestris) is found in Bundelkhand region of the country and it is suitable tree component for agro forestry system (Tewari et al., 2001). Phoenix dactylifera is commercially grown for edible fruits and value added products.

Sensor is a device which converts environmental parameters into electrical signals. In the broad definition, it is a device, module, machine, or subsystem which is designed to detect events or changes in the environment and send the information to other electronics components. An actuator is a component of a machine which is responsible for moving and controlling a system. A microcontroller is a small computer on a single metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chip. This chapter explains the microcontroller development boards and their components along with the classifications of sensors and actuators.

Sensors are chosen on the basis of application where they need to be implemented like Industrial process control, measurement and automation, Automobiles, Consumer electronics, Aircraft, Medical products etc. As with change in application the selection criteria changes, so application needs to be considered.

Turf is an English word, which traces its origin to India from the Sanskrit word “Darbha” means “tuft of grass” or “Kusha” in hindi. Kusha has been mentioned numerous ties even in Hind mythologies (Turgeon, 1985). Turf, is a grass which is smooth, has quality texture and a soothing colour surface that is used in the golf courses, lawns, fields, nurseries, gardens, etc. Turf is a piece of earth of about 5 cm thickness with grass thickly grown over it. Turfgrass has become increasingly important in today’s society as people’s needs increase for recreation, comfort and aesthetics. Turfgrasses are considered as major component of landscape industry which provides aesthetic value. They provide arena for various functional, recreational and social activities.

Turfgrasses enhance the appearance of land and increase the utility of sports fields, lawns, parks, golf courses and other greenbelt areas in and around urban as well as sub urban centres. They improve the environment of urban centres by reducing erosion, temperatures, noise, dust and glare. And, turfgrasses improve the safety of sports fields and playgrounds by adding resiliency to the playing surface. Turfgrasses are increasingly being used by National Highway Authority of India for reducing dust pollution and decreasing vehicle glare by planting on central verge and sides. Only turfgrasses are used by airport authorities for planting besides runway. The grasses being of perennial nature also help in carbon sequestration thus helping combat climate change. The grasses which grow well on sandy soil will help to reduce the dust and control erosion and dust pollution on river banks.

The turfgrass industry is growing rapidly due to strong demand for residential and commercial property development, rising affluence, and the environmental and aesthetic benefits of turfgrass in the urban landscape. Increased area under aesthetic and utility turfs is mainly because of increasing awareness about the sports, degrading environment and the increase in real estate value. The economic value of the turfgrass industry in India is yet to be determined as there is no single government agency handling or collecting the authentic data on turfgrass cover, use or import. All the agencies dealing with turfgrasses are either private companies, nurseries or corporates. But, according to the scarce data gathered by golf associations, sports experts and Association of Indian Nurserymen, turfgrass industry covers an area of more than 30000 acres, in which around 6000 acre is under turfgrass cultivation (sod production). States leading in turfgrass cultivation and marketing are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, etc. The total number of international cricket grounds in India are 50 and 8 are under construction, more than 520 domestic cricket grounds and athletic fields are also in operation. Indian turfgrass industry is growing around 10 per cent annually. Landscape business contributes 2-3 per cent of total construction and turf has 50 per cent of landscape business.

Zingiberales is an important order in Kingdom Plantae with eight families in which most of them are important as far as commercial horticulture is concerned. The order includes fruits (bananas and plantains), spices (ginger, turmeric, cardamom), medicinal (arrowroot, galangal) and ornamental (Heliconias, Bird of Paradise, Marantas, Canna, Costus, etc) plants. Among the ornamental zingiberales, plants of Strelitziaceae and Heliconiaceae are gaining popularity for its aesthetic preferences and marketable cut flowers. The unique colour and enhanced vase life of inflorescences makes them as flowers of choice. The plants of other families such as Marantaceae, Cannaceae, Costaceae, Zingiberaceae, Lowiaceae and Musaceae are also gaining momentum in floriculture business for their cut foliages and inflorescences. Some plants such as calathias are admired as potted plants and for indoor gardening.

Floriculture is a high value industry. It is increasingly regarded as a feasible diversification option from traditional field crops due to increased per unit returns and increasing habit of ‘Greeting with Flowers’ during all the occasions. With increasing awareness among consumers and pressure from the artificial floral products on the fresh flower industry, and continued competition even amongst the growers, whole salers and retailers, quality is becoming increasi ngly important. The aspects related to visual quality of the product are the main determining indices of consumer’s acceptability of flowers.

The important flower crops in the international market are rose, carnation, lisianthus, chrysanthemum, gerbera, hydrangea, gladiolus, gypsophila, bird of paradise, orchids, anthurium, tulip and lilies etc. Cut flowers have the highest economic value and are the most perishable. Their high respiration rates, rapid deterioration, and susceptibility to damage require the utmost care during postharvest handling for quality maintenance. The post-harvest losses can be both, quantitative as well as qualitative, which ultimately result in loss in terms of its monetary value.

Floriculture industry is facing main problem due to highly perishable nature of its flowers which demand for appropriate post-harvest handling techniques to maintain the quality. With changing scenario in international floriculture trade, perfection in post-harvest technology is mandatory to offer quality plant products to the consumers round the year. The post-harvest life of cut flowers and flowering pot plants can be extended relatively by a range of treatments and technologies. Quality factors that influence the post- harvest keeping quality and flower longevity are environmental factors as well as the influence of the pathogenic organisms. Due to perishable nature of cut flowers, huge post-harvest loss is there which ranges from 30-50 per cent. Qualitative losses which include consumer acceptability of fresh produce are much more difficult to measure than quantitative losses. Quantitative losses can occur during the entire post-harvest and marketing chain due to lack of proper post harvest handling (Bhattacharjee, 2006). These losses could be on a higher side, which might be due to lack of knowledge on ‘post-harvest handling’ of cut flowers and proper infrastructure for post-harvest management and storage. However, all these losses can only be minimized by proper technique of harvesting, post-harvest handling, packaging, storage, marketing and value addition of flowers.

Water is the only substance that exists in the atmosphere in all the three phases, i.e., solid, liquid and gas. The moisture on the earth's surface is in a constant phase change. The moisture content of the atmosphere is about 0.035% of all fresh water. The atmosphere receives its supply of moisture from the earth's surface through evaporation from oceans, lakes, rivers, damp soil, etc. and through transpiration from vegetation. Water vapour is the gaseous state of water and is invisible. The amount of water vapour present in the atmosphere is called atmospheric moisture or humidity. It is a measure of the amount of water vapour dissolved in the air, not including any liquid water or ice falling through the air.

Water vapour is constantly being cycled between the atmosphere and the earth's surface. The input rate (the rate at which water vapour enters the atmosphere from the ground through evaporation) and output rate (the rate at which water moves from the atmosphere to ground through precipitation) are equal. The average length of time that individual molecules of water remain in the atmosphere is called the residence time. It can be found by dividing the mass of the substance in the atmosphere (in kilograms) by the rate (in kg per year) at which the substance enters to and exists in the atmosphere. The total volume of atmospheric water vapour at any instance over the globe is about 14000 km³, which is 0.001% of the hydrosphere.

Although water vapour is lighter than air, the combination of higher temperatures and the ocean source tends to restrict it to the lower atmosphere. The decrease of water vapour with elevation is quite important in many meteorological processes. Infact, most of the water vapour is contained within the lower 5 km of the atmosphere (> 90%) and more than half is actually contained within the lowest 1.5 to 2 km. Less than 5 - 6% of the water is above 5 km, and less than 1% is in the stratosphere.

Precipitation is the deposition of atmospheric moisture on earth. All the water sources on the earth depend on precipitation only. Precipitation involves condensation, growth of hygroscopic nuclei, cooling of nuclei at different stages and their fall on to the earth's surface. If the cloud particles are too small and remain suspended in the sky, they may not fall on the earth. There may be several clouds but no precipitation. Under certain conditions, water particles formed tend to fall but do not reach the surface since they get evaporated on the way. Only when the cloud droplets or ice crystals grow to certain size and can no longer remain floating due to buoyancy of air, do they fall as precipitation.

FORMS OF PRECIPITATION

Precipitation form is the state that the moisture is in, i.e., liquid, freezing, or frozen (solid). Because atmospheric conditions vary greatly both geographically and seasonally, several different forms of precipitation are possible. All forms of precipitation are collectively termed hydrometeors. Hydrometeors have been classified into 50 specific types. Out of these precipitation forms, only rain (liquid form) and snow (solid form) make significant contribution to total precipitation. In many parts of the world, the term rainfall is used interchangeably with precipitation.

Clouds are the most important form of suspended water droplets caused by condensation. The World Meteorological Organisation defined cloud as a visible aggregate of minute particles of water or ice or both, in the free air. This aggregate may include larger particles of water or ice and particles such as those present in fumes, smoke or dust. The typical size of these water droplets and ice crystals range from less than 1 µm to 50 µm. When surrounded by billions of other droplets or crystals, they become visible as clouds. In the atmosphere sufficient moisture is required to allow condensation to take place. Then, moisture needs a suitable surface upon which it can condense. In free air, condensation begins on hygroscopic nuclei such as aerosols. These are microscopic particles and include dust, smoke, salts and chemical compounds. Nuclei range in size from 0.001 µm radius to over 10 µm. On an average, oceanic air contains one million condensation nuclei per litre and land air holds some 5 or 6 million. On hygroscopic particles such as sea salts, condensation can begin before the air is saturated. Supersaturation in clouds rarely exceeds one per cent. On average, clouds contain only four per cent of the total water in the atmosphere at any one time. Almost all clouds exist in the troposphere, although the tops of some severe thunderstorms occasionally extend to the stratosphere. Clouds move along with the wind and remain stationary in calm winds. They grow vertically and horizontally, depending on the temperature of the cloud and its ambient temperature. They may dissipate or precipitate. Under favourable atmospheric conditions, they burst and fall as rain. Clouds complete the following functions.

Plant diseases comprise a major factor in the culture of papaya. Adequate control measures are necessary to intensify the production of papaya. There are over 17 diseases caused by fungi, viruses, mycoplasma and nematodes, which affect papaya plant all over the world. Of these about 5-6 diseases like collar rot, damping off, anthracnose, mosaic and leaf curl are serious problems in many papaya growing areas of the world. They can reduce yield greatly and impair marketability of fruits. They must be checked and losses due to them must be minimized in order to increase the economics of papaya production.

Anthracnose is considered as one of the principle postharvest disease of papaya occurring worldwide and has been noted to cause huge losses in countries like Brazil, Hawaii (USA) and Mexico. It is one ofthe most ubiquitous and destructive disease of papaya, mainly during storage. The fungus infects various parts of the plant but mainly occurs in fruits, which later becomes unfit for commercialization. It is a major limitation to papaya production of about 90% along with the exportation of the fruit to bigger overseas market. The disease can have serious effect on refrigerated fruit for export. The use of inappropriate postharvest methods can result in production of up to 100% diseased fruits from some orchards.
