Oligosaccharides comprise 2 to 10 units of monosaccharide molecules, which are released upon hydrolysis. The oligosaccharides are classified depending upon the number of monosaccharide units, e.g., Disaccharides (two monosaccharide units), Trisaccharides (three monosaccharide units), Tetrasaccharides (four monosaccharide units). Disaccharides are the most common oligosaccharides found in nature.
4.1 Disaccharides
Disaccharides are formed when glycosidic linkages covalently bond two monosaccharides together. A glycosidic bond is formed when the hydroxyl group on one of the sugars reacts with the monomeric carbon on the second sugar. A glycosidic bond can be alpha or beta, depending on the steric configuration at carbon one on the monosaccharide unit. During the union of two monosaccharide units, water molecules are eliminated (dehydration reaction or condensation reaction, or dehydration synthesis), and the formation of a glycosidic bond occurs, through which the units are linked via an oxygen bridge.

Introduction
At the end of gastrulation, the mesoderm of the developing embryo differentiates into three regions: paraxial, intermediate, and lateral mesoderm. These regions play crucial roles in the formation of various body structures. As development proceeds, clefts form in the lateral mesoderm, which later coalesce to form a cavity. This cavity splits the lateral mesoderm into two layers: the somatic (outer) layer and the splanchnic (inner) layer. The space between these layers on each side of the midline becomes known as the coelomic cavity. These left and right coelomic cavities extend cranially, meet in front of the developing neural and cardiogenic plates, and fuse to form a horseshoe-shaped coelomic cavity. The walls of the developing coelomic cavity have two layers. The outer layer consists of somatic mesoderm, which fuses with ectoderm to form the somatopleure. The inner layer consists of splanchnic mesoderm, which fuses with endoderm to form the splanchnopleure. The mesodermal cells lining the coelomic cavity differentiate into a simple squamous epithelium called mesothelium. As cranial, caudal, and lateral folding occurs during embryonic development, the convex region of the horseshoe-shaped coelom eventually takes a ventral position to the foregut and developing heart, forming the primordium of the pericardial cavity. The developing coelomic cavities, initially continuous with one another at the umbilicus, become separated into intra-embryonic and extra-embryonic regions. The intra-embryonic coelom gives rise to the pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal cavities, while the extraembryonic coelom is associated with the developing fetal membranes. As the embryo folds laterally, the coelomic cavity divides into two separate components. The pleural cavities, which surround the developing lungs, are initially part of the pleuropericardial cavity, alongside the developing heart. As mesodermal folds, known as pleuropericardial folds, grow medially, they enclose the common cardinal veins and the phrenic nerves. These folds eventually separate the pleuro-pericardial cavity into two parts: the pleural cavities dorsally, and the pericardial cavities ventrally. The developing lungs grow

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is important seed spices belonging to family Apiaceae, and a native of Southern Europe and Mediterranean area. Later it spread to the far East and far north in Europe. To the ancient Greeks, fennel represented success and so it was called “Marathon” in reference to the battle, fought in fennel field where the Greeks defeated the Persians in 490 B.C. Fennel was also a symbol of success to the Romans. During the thirteenth century in England, fennel was considered as a royal spice and was served to kings with fruits, bread and pickled fish seasoned with fennel seeds. Fennel was even described by Longfellow in his poem The Goblet of Life. According to early Sanskrit writings, fennel has been described as Madhurika and was known as far back as 2000 BC for its cultivation in India.

Abstract
 
The word “sustain” is derived from the Latin verb ‘sustinere’(to keep in existence or maintain) and implies long-term support or permanence. The accepted definition of sustainable agriculture has proved to be elusive, given the extraordinary diversity and complexity of agricultural land use, and the perspective taken including producers, consumers, policy makers and workforces. Sustainable agriculture is defined as ‘the ability of farmland to produce food grain and other agricultural products to satisfy human needs indefinitely as well as having sustainable impacts on the broader environment and maintained equilibrium in productivity level’. That in other words, requires agriculture to avoid severe or irreversible damage to the endogenous or external ecosystem services upon which it depends, notably soil fertility, irrigation water, genetic variability and pollinating agencies and have acceptable impacts on the broader environment under the environmental stewardship.

Introduction

Synthetic seeds are defined as artificially encapsulated somatic embryos, shoot buds, cell aggregates, or any other tissue that can be used for sowing as a seed and that possess the ability to convert into a plant under in vitro or ex vitro conditions and retained its potentiality also after storage (Capuano et al., 1998). In other words, synthetic or artificial seeds defined as somatic embryos engineered seed used in the commercial propagation of plants (Gray and Purohit, 1991; Redenbaugh, 1993).

Artificial seeds have great potential for large scale production of plants at low cost as an alternative to true seeds (Roy and Mandal, 2008). An artificial seed is often described as a novel analogue to true seed consisting of a somatic embryo surrounded by an artificial coat which is at most equivalent to an immature zygotic embryo, possibly at post-heart stage or early cotyledonary stage (Bekheet, 2006). There are various advantages of artificial seeds such as better and clonal plants could be propagated similar to seeds, preservation of rare plant species extending biodiversity could be realized, and more consistent and synchronized harvesting of important agricultural crops would become a reality, among many other possibilities (Khor and Loh, 2005). In addition, ease of handling, potential long-term storage and low cost of production and subsequent propagation are other benefits (Bekheet, 2006).

Introduction and Scope

Plant and soil testing enable scientific assessment of the needs of the plant for nutrient elements and of the capacity of the soil to supply them. The nutrient elements enter the plant in ionic form from the soil solution. Ion transport to the root surface may take place through ion diffusion and bulk transport (mass flow). Mass flow is the sweeping along of ions as water moves to the root. It is particularly important for ions that are not absorbed on soil colloids such as nitrates and sulphates. Because of mass flow, a plant deficient in N can extract all the nitrates from the soil. Potassium, phosphate and the micronutrient cations are absorbed on soil colloids with various degrees of affinity and are greatly retarded in movement with the soil water. Diffusion (movement along a concentration gradient) is the main mode of transport from the solid phase to the root surface for these non-mobile ions. There is also a possibility that some of them are absorbed by a direct exchange of an ion, usually hydrogen, between the root surface and ions absorbed on soil colloids. Most ions are sorbed by the root against a concentration gradient and, thus, the process involves the use of metabolic energy. The fact that nutrient uptake is an active process explains some of its peculiarities. Plants not only accumulate nutrients against a concentration gradient, they are also able to select from the nutrients at the root surface according to their requirements (preferential uptake).

Cotton

Cotton is one of the most important fiber and cash crop of India and play a key role in economic and social affairs of the world. Cotton is referred to as “King of Fibres” and also known as “White Gold”. India is largest produces of accounting for 22% cotton in the world. Nearly 65 per cent of the cotton crop is grown under rainfed conditions. Cotton production, processing and trade provides livelihood to several millions of people.

8.1 Introduction

The garden strawberry (or simply strawberry) is one of the most preferred soft and attractive, tasty and nutritious fruit with a distinct and pleasant aroma, and delicate flavour. The fruit of strawberry is technically known as an accessory fruit and the fleshy part is derived not from the ovaries (achenes) but from receptacle. The common cultivated strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) is a widely grown hybrid plant resulting from the cross between two American species, Fragaria chiloensis of western North and South America and Fragaria virginiana of eastern North America. Its name has been derived from farmers mulching called “Straw”, earlier the strawberries were just planted for medicinal purpose but later on Carlus Linneaus for the first time introduced strawberry as edible fruit (Lieten et al., 1995). Strawberry is herbaceous perennial. It is an aggregate accessory fruit (not a berry indeed), meaning that the fleshy part is derived not from the ovaries of the flower but from the receptacle, that holds the ovaries. Each apparent seed (properly named achene) on the outside of the fruit is actually one of the ovaries of the flower, with a seed inside it. This fruit is widely appreciated for its characteristic aroma, bright red colour, juicy texture, and sweetness. It is consumed in large quantities, either fresh or in prepared foods such as preserves, fruit juice, pies, ice creams, milk shakes, and other desserts (FAO, 2012).

The climate crisis has emerged as one of the most pressing issues of our time, threatening the very foundations of our planet and its inhabitants. The scientific consensus is clear: human activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases, are significantly contributing to the rising global temperatures, devastating natural disasters, and unpredictable weather patterns. As the world grapples with the challenges posed by climate change, a critical question arises: is it a compromise or a compulsion to act? The climate crisis is a complex and multifaceted issue, requiring a comprehensive and collective response. On one hand, there are those who advocate for a compromise, suggesting that economic growth and development can be balanced with environmental concerns (Fig. 2.1). This approach emphasizes the need for gradual and incremental changes, allowing countries and industries to adapt to new regulations and technologies. Proponents of this view argue that a compromise is necessary to avoid economic disruption, ensure energy security, and promote international cooperation. Fig. 2.1. Eco-evolutionary feedback by carbon cycling traits, in response to climate change On the other hand, there are those who insist that the climate crisis demands a compulsion to act, requiring immediate, drastic, and collective action. This perspective emphasizes the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to renewable energy sources, and protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate change. Advocates of this view argue that the window for action is rapidly closing, and that anything less than a concerted and emergency response will condemn future generations to a catastrophic and unlivable world. The science unequivocally supports the latter perspective. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, global carbon emissions must reach net-zero by 2050. This requires a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030, and a complete phase-out of fossil fuels by 2050. The consequences of inaction are stark: more frequent and intense natural disasters, sea-level rise, water scarcity, food insecurity, and mass migration (Fig. 2.1).

Introduction

Maize (Zea mays Linn) is the most widely distributed crop of the world. It adapts easily to a wide range of production environments and is grown in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world. It holds a unique position in world agriculture ranking third after rice and wheat in terms of area as well as production. In India too, it is the third most important cereal crop and is cultivated in 8. 17 m ha (2007-08) area. It contributes nearly 8% to the national food basket and more than Rs 100 billion to agricultural gross domestic products with an annual production of 19. 73 million tons. It is used as a source of human food (24%) animal feed (11%), poultry feed (52%), starch (11%), brewery and seed (1% each). In India it is largely grown in Northern states where it serves as an important staple food for an economically vulnerable population of submountainarean and hilly regions.

Carbon may present in soil in four different forms:

Hypothesis testing provides a statistical framework for making inferences about populations from sample observations obtained through random experiments. This chapter introduces the scientific logic underlying statistical hypotheses and explains the formulation of null and alternative hypotheses. It discusses one-tailed and two-tailed tests, levels of significance, Type I and Type II errors, sampling distributions, test statistics, critical regions, p-values, and decision-making. The chapter also explains statistical significance and the interpretation of test results. Applications of Student’s t-test and related procedures are illustrated through forestry and biological examples, enabling researchers to determine whether observed differences between means can reasonably be attributed to treatments rather than random sampling variation.

Bivalve and mollusc hatchery techniques are fundamental to modern aquaculture, offering controlled environments to induce spawning, facilitate larval development, and ensure juvenile growth. These hatcheries serve as the cornerstone for sustainable mollusc farming by supplying consistent and high-quality seed stock. Key procedures in these facilities include broodstock conditioning, induced spawning, larval rearing, and juvenile cultivation, all tailored to maximize reproductive success and survival rates. Molluscs, particularly bivalves such as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops, play a vital role in global aquaculture. Their cultivation is expanding rapidly due to their ecological services, including water filtration and habitat formation, alongside their high nutritional value and economic returns. Hatchery-based production enhances seed availability and reliability, addressing the variability of natural seed sources and supporting the expansion of commercial farming. Mollusc hatcheries are specialized facilities engineered to regulate and maintain optimal conditions for reproduction, larval development, and seed production. These operations are built upon scientific principles encompassing infrastructure design, water quality management, breeding protocols, and biosecurity measures. Induced spawning techniques, often triggered through temperature shocks or chemical cues, initiate gamete release under controlled settings. Larval rearing involves maintaining precise environmental parameters— temperature, salinity, and food availability—to support the delicate early developmental stages. Following metamorphosis, juveniles are transferred to nursery systems where they continue to grow until they are ready for transfer to grow-out sites. A distinguishing anatomical feature of bivalves is their two-valved shell, which may be symmetrical or asymmetrical and may fully or partially enclose the soft body.
