Introduction

Spray drying process has been used for decades to encapsulate food ingredients such as flavors, lipids, and carotenoids. Example: Laboratory animals like mice, rat, monkeys, primates; livestock like cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, poultry; plants, a plot of land, etc.

Necessity of designing an experiment

1. To get maximum information from the available resources.

2. To know the effect of treatment on experimental units and to make comparison between treatments.

3. To know whether the difference between the effect of two treatments is significant or not.

4. A well designed experiment has a well defined method of statistical analysis of data.

5. To minimize error in the whole experimental procedure.

6. An ill designed experiment is not likely to give proper estimates of parameters and comparisons between treatments with desired precision even if the method of data analysis is very good.

7. The design of experiment is essential to get all the important treatment effects to be compared independently.

Diffusion research investigates the spread of ideas within social groups. It extends beyond the two-step flow theory by examining the factors that influence the adoption of innovations, which can include new ideas, products, or practices, among members of a culture. In multi-step diffusion, while opinion leaders still play a significant role in influencing adopters' behavior, there are also other intermediaries involved in the decision-making process between the media and the audience.

One such intermediary is the change agent, who persuades opinion leaders to either adopt or reject an innovation (Infante, Rancer, & Womack, 1997).

Innovations are not universally adopted by all individuals in a social system simultaneously; rather, adoption typically occurs over time and can be categorized into adopter categories based on the time it takes for individuals to start using the new idea. For change agents, identifying which category individuals belong to is highly practical, as their short-term objective often involves facilitating the adoption of an innovation.

The adoption of new ideas is driven by human interaction within interpersonal networks. When the initial adopter of an innovation discusses it with two members of a social system, and these two in turn influence two more peers, and so forth, the pattern of adoption follows a binomial expansion. Over time, the distribution of adopters tends to follow a bell-shaped curve (Rogers, 1971).

Atmospheric temperature refers to the measure of the warmth or coldness of the air at different levels within the Earth’s atmosphere. It’s not a uniform value but varies significantly with altitude and location. More detailed descrption of atmospheric temperature is as follows:
• Different Layers, Different Temperatures: The Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere), and each layer has a distinct temperature profile. For example, the troposphere (where we live and where weather occurs) generally gets colder with increasing altitude, while the stratosphere above it gets warmer due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer.

Much of the credit for this success should go to the several million small farming families that form the backbone of Indian agriculture and Indian economy. The Green Revolution phase displayed a high yield growth per unit of input. The first post-Green Revolution phase (from late-1960s to mid-1980s) was marked by the continued growth in returns from land through the intensification in use of chemical inputs and machine labour. The second post-Green Revolution phase (beginning the mid-1980s) was characterized by high input-use and decelerating productivity growth. It calls for an examination of the issues related to the trends in agricultural productivity, particularly with reference to individual crops in recent years. In the present paper, the temporal and spatial variations in the productivity status of major crops in India have been analyzed using the TFPG estimates. Some policy measures have also been suggested for sustaining TFP of the crops.

During the era of Green Revolution, India remarkably achieved self-sufficiency in food production with the introduction of high-yielding varieties, extension in the irrigated cultivable land, high use of chemical fertilizer such as Urea and other sources of NPK fertilizers and increase in cropping intensity.During these processes, relative contribution of organic manures as a source of plant nutrients declined substantially. Due to heavy application of chemical pesticides an increase in resistance of insect pests has also been noticed for most of the regular used plant protection chemicals. Health hazards associated with intensive modern agriculture, such as pesticides residues in food products and groundwater contamination are matter of concern. In the progress of green revolution technologies and chemical dependent nutrient management has declined the overall productive capacity of the soil due to no judicious fertilizer use. Such concerns and problems faced by modern-day agriculture gave birth to new concepts in farming, such as organic farming, natural farming, biodynamic agriculture, donothing agriculture, eco-farming, etc. The essential feature of such farming practices imply, i.e., back to nature.

Pollination is a vital and key component of ecosystem services which is provided by pollinators. FAO, 2007 reported that 80 per cent of plant species rely for pollination on pollinators, which is dominated by insects. Among the insect pollinators, solitary and social bees dominate both managed and natural ecosystems. No other groups of insects are more beneficial to humans than bees. Many plants have evolved intricate relationships with many insect pollinators and without their presence, majority of plant species would not reproduce and maintain their genetic diversity (Daily et al., 1997). In natural ecosystem, insect pollination plays a pivotal role to maintain and conserve the plant biodiversity. On a global scale, the total annual value of insect pollination services has been estimated at USD 217 billion (Sciencedaily, 2008). United Nations reported that the economics of ecosystems and biodiversity by insect pollination was valued at £134 billion.

Drought occurs when a region experiences below average precipitation, resulting in prolonged shortages in its water supply, which can have a significant impact on agriculture and the ecosystem. To reduce the effect of drought on farm production and stabilize farm income, farmers must take systematic measures called drought coping mechanisms. These measures can be categorized into two broad categories: Ex-ante coping mechanisms, which are taken before the occurrence of drought, and Ex-post coping mechanisms, which are taken after the occurrence of drought. Ex-ante coping mechanisms include activities such as crop, spatial, and varietal diversification, income diversification, and the use of savings. Ex-post coping mechanisms include changing consumption patterns, borrowing money, liquidating assets, seeking government drought relief funds, and migration. Drought can have a significant impact on crop and livestock production, causing farmers to adopt drought coping mechanisms to stabilize their farm income. This study goals to identify the factors that determine the adoption of such coping mechanisms, to mitigate the effects of drought on the livelihoods of farmers.

The Internet of Things supports continuous monitoring of soil, crops, weather and other field conditions through distributed sensors and connected devices. This chapter proposes an edge-cloud architecture designed to address scalability, heterogeneous data, communication latency and energy requirements. Edge nodes conduct local processing and anomaly detection, while cloud platforms provide storage and run advanced machine-learning models. Applications include crop-status evaluation, irrigation scheduling, pest and disease detection and yield forecasting. Explainable artificial intelligence improves transparency by helping users understand model recommendations. The integrated architecture can reduce response time compared with conventional centralized systems and provides a foundation for scalable, efficient and responsive next-generation smart-farming operations.

A ‘flower’ is an intricate organ composed of different morphological units including sepals, petals, androecium, gynoecium, stem and leaves. A cut flower may be defined as flower or an inflorescence containing more than one floral unit in the opened or unopened state which is harvested and marketed for ornamental purposes. Cut flowers in general are highly perishable commodities and highly vulnerable to huge post harvest losses. Once severed from the plant, they are deprived of their natural sources of water and nutrients and they wilt rapidly. It is claimed that 70% of the potential lasting quality of cut flowers is pre-determined at harvest. While post harvest factors influence 30% of the effects nearly 20-80% of the cut flowers are lost due to improper post harvest handling (Salunkhe et al., 1990).

Vedic system of medicine, also called Hindu medicine, Aryan median, Indian system of medicine and in modern era as science of life (Ayurveda). It traces origin from mythical, through a semi-mythical, to historical beginning. Clues on uses of medicine are although obtainable since Indus civilization, it was propounded more in the Vedic period and also in post Vedic era. It is claimed to be the oldest medicinal system and heritage of India. The ancient Indians were first to cultivate astronomical science, mathematics, chemistry, grammar, lexicography, architecture and Dhanur-veda. Another compartment of human life is medicine, in which Indians never lagged behind. Vedic medicine is not born within four walls of a laboratory. It is nurtured in nature, human minds and hearts. The Vedic wisdom is engendered by trial and errors, experimentation, natural observations and timely criticism by the learned exponents. Obviously, there is no denial to the fact that the torch of learning was handed down to the other civilizations by the ancient Indians. Vedic medicine is not confined to the boundary of Indian nation but percolated in other cultures. Careful and critical examination of such a great heritage is a task of not of ordinary men. Still I took interest to review it, although almost impossible to justify it within the limits of few pages and time. The title of my paper amply suggests that Vedic medicine is a mine of information but I have tried to put on record it, in a nutshell. To tap down information in historical perspective, relevant literature has been borrowed and consulted to pinpoint the events, concepts wisdom of ancient Indians. These literary sources are enlisted under references.

A forest is a large area dominated by trees. Many definitions of forest are used throughout the world, incorporating factors such as tree density, tree height, land use, legal standing and ecological function. Although a forest is usually defined by the presence of trees, under many definitions an area completely lacking trees may still be considered a forest if it grew trees in the past, will grow trees in the future, or was legally designated as a forest regardless of vegetation type. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, forests covered four billion hectares or approximately 30% of the world’s land area in 2006. Forests are the dominant terrestrial ecosystem of earth, and are distributed around the globe. Forests account for 75% of the gross primary production of the earth’s biosphere, and contain 80% of the earth’s plant biomass.

DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN FORESTRY

Systematic management of forests for a sustainable yield of timber began in Portugal in the 13th century when Afonso III, the king of Portugal planted the trees to prevent coastal erosion and soil degradation, and as a sustainable source for timber used in naval construction. His successor Dom Dinis continued the practice and the forest exists still today. Forest management also started in Germany in the 14th century and in Japan in the 16th century. The practice of establishing tree plantations in the British Isles was promoted by John Evelyn during second half of the 17th century.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, forest preservation programmes were established in British India, the United States and Europe. Sir Dietrich Brandis is considered the father of tropical forestry. He brought European concepts and practices to the tropical and semi-arid climate zones. The enactment and evolution of forest laws and binding regulations occurred in most Western nations in the 20th century in response to growing conservation concerns. Tropical forestry is a separate branch of forestry which deals mainly with equatorial forests that yield woods such as teak and mahogany. One of the applications of modern forestry is reforestation, in which trees are planted and tended in a given area.

5.1 Introduction

Phosphorus fertilization is a problem in acid soils due to the high fixation characteristics of these soils. Soluble phosphorus carriers such as triple super phosphate tend to get reverted into insoluble and slowly soluble forms, for e.g. iron and aluminium phosphates.  Some soils in Mauritius have been shown to fix up to 90% of applied phosphorus. The fixation characteristics as related to soil properties have been studied for some soils of Mauritius. Rock phosphate offers a good alternative or complement to triple super phosphate.  In volcanic soils of Chile it is recommended to apply rock phosphate in combination with triple super phosphate because of the high phosphorus-retention capacity of these soils.  However, in Western Australia it has been shown that rock phosphate response is low. Possible explanations are slow dissolution of rock phosphate due to the moderately acid pH (5.5 -6.5), low pH-buffering capacity, low calcium absorption in soil, which increases concentration of calcium in soil solution, and poor water holding capacity of these soils.
