16.1 Conservative Technology

Recycling technology being practiced by ancient times by the people who used for municipal industrial effluent. In India the people in rural area, they collected cow dung in a pit. They applied a layer of soil on the cow dung to composting. After three to four months period, they used as manure for the agricultural fields. In a household waste, they collected as organic waste from a kitchen, store a pit allow it for decompose for conversion of compost. People who are residing in house constructed in a plot, they used to generate industrial effluent in a pit and cultivate a kitchen garden like vegetable crops and banana trees etc. in ancient times, the amount organic waste is limited and self purification is taken in small amount of organic waste therefore no organic pollution occurs in rural India.

3.1 INTRODUCTION

Tomato is one of the most versatile vegetable with wide usage not only in Indian culinary but also in world cuisines. Despite botanically being a fruit, it is generally eaten and prepared like a vegetable. Tomato is producing a very good source of income to small and marginal farmers and provides nutrition to the growing population. Sometimes, it is called poor man’s orange in India and Love of Apple in England. Tomato is one of the most important “protective foods” because of its special nutritive value. The100 g of edible portion of tomato contains 94.1 g of water,2.5 g of total sugar, 1.0 g of protein, 0.3 g of fat, 4.0 g of carbohydrates, 0.6 g of fibre, vitamin A (1100 I.U), vitamin B (0.20 mg), vitamin C (23 mg), malic acid (150 mg), citric acid (390 mg), oxalic acid (3.5 mg), potassium (268 mg), and phosphorus (27 mg). Tomato is a rich source of minerals, vitamins and organic acid. Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. It is used for treating chronic dyspepsia, bronchitis, asthma and also used as a blood purifier. Tomato fruits contain 20-50 mg of lycopene/100 g fruit. Tomatine is a steroidal glycoalkaloid present in tomato. Tomatine content is higher in leaves and f lowers than fruits. Tomatine content is 300 mg/100 g in small hard tomato fruits whereas in large green tomato it is 150mg/100 g. There are various types of f lavouring compounds found in fruits, which enrich the taste;so, several processed items like paste, puree, syrup, juice, ketchup, drinks etc are prepared on large scale. Tomato fruit aroma is due to sulfonium. Tomato acidity is due to citric acid and pH of the tomato juice is 4.5.Tomato is very good appetizer and its soup is said to be a good remedy for patients suffering from constipation. Three f lesh colours are found in tomato, namely, red (lycopene pigment), yellow (carotenoid) and tangerine (prolycopene).Tomato seed oil (24%) is used for manufacture of margarine. About 33% of total tomato growing area is covered by F₁hybrids which is highest among the vegetables grown in India. A book entitled Tomato was written by Dr. G. Kallo in 1986.

Introduction

The Indian gene centre has rich diversity in vegetable crops. This diversity includes crops native to India like eggplant, parval, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, Colocasia sp., elephant yam and for centre of diversity for other vegetable crops i.e., Okra, Cucumber, Chayote, Chilli, Cucurbita etc. Rich diversity also occurs in introduced crops such as tomato, french bean, cowpea, leafy brassica, amaranth, yam and in cucurbits, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, coccinea, ash gourd, snake gourd and in bulbous crop like onion and garlic.

Genetic Resources of Vegetable Crops in India

Their diversity and conservation about 400 species constitute the global diversity in vegetable crops. This diversity is mainly distributed in seven-eight geographical regions, which represent the centres of origin and diversity as well. Among these, the regions possessing maximum diversity are the tropical American, Tropical Asian and the Mediterranean (q.v.) regions. In the tropical Asian region, both India and China hold maximum diversity.

Moisture plays by far the most important role in soils as regards vegetation. It is through the medium of water that the plants obtain their quota of mineral food vital for their growth. If water is gradually withheld from the soil, at a certain stage, the plant will begin to wilt and soon dry up. The soil may still contain some moisture but the plant is unable to make use of it. The minimum moisture in the soil below which wilting will take place is called the Wilting Coefficient and at one time great importance was attached to it. The determination of this Coefficient, however, is tedius. One must grow a number of plants and slowly watch them wilt and determine the moisture content at that point. Moisture content of the soil is determined by heating a weighed quantity of the sample in an oven kept at 100-110 ^oC. The moisture is expressed as percentage on the oven-dry soil.

Greenhouses are frames or inflated structures covered with a transparent or translucent material in which crops can be grown under partially controlled or totally controlled conditions of atleast. It is large enough to permit persons to work within, to carry out cultural operations. Greenhouse cultivation as well as other modes of controlled environment cultivation has been evolved to create favourable microclimate, for the crop production all through the year or during off season, when the produce is highly priced and remunerative. Green house is a broader term of protected structures which includes different types of structures according to the need. Green houses vary in size and complexity from small home or hobby structures to large commercial units, from solar green house to sophisticated environment controlled ones.

Climate change is looming large on the globe. Food security is one of the key issues that inevitably needs to be resolved under the specters of climate change, particularly in the fragile ecosystems. Never before in the history has Indian agriculture been as vulnerable and uncertainty ridden as it is today. A glimpse of the dynamics of Indian agriculture reveals that it has systematically deviated away from its base environment, the prop that nourishes all biological resources. Today’s agriculture is valued against the prices it fetches from the market, especially the global market. Its contribution to human health and welfare, ecological integrity, resilience of nature etc., are grossly neglected.

Agriculture in developing countries must undergo a significant transformation in order to meet the related challenges of achieving food security and responding to climate change. Projections based on population growth and food consumption patterns indicate that agricultural production will need to increase by at least 70 per cent to meet demands by 2050. Most estimates also indicate that climate change is likely to reduce agricultural productivity, production stability and incomes in some areas that already have high levels of food insecurity. Developing climate–smart agriculture is thus crucial to achieving future food security and climate change goals.

The production, processing and marketing of agricultural goods are central to food security and economic growth. Products derived from plants and animals include foods (such as cereals, vegetables, fruits, fish and meat), fibers (such as cotton, wool, hemp and silk), fuels (such as dung, charcoal and biofuels from crops and residues) and other raw materials (including medicines, building materials, resins, etc.,). Production has been achieved through a number of production systems which range from smallholder mixed cropping and livestock systems to intensive farming practices such as large monocultures and intensive livestock rearing. The sustainable intensification of production, especially in developing countries, can ensure food security and contribute to mitigating climate change by reducing deforestation and the encroachment of agriculture into natural ecosystems

The increasing concerns about dwindling biological resources globally led to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. This convention for the first time, recognized sovereign rights of States over their biological resources and emphasized that access to genetic resources should be only for environmentally sound purposes and should be subject to national legislations. The access has to be on mutually agreed terms which inter-alia would include recognition of associated Traditional Knowledge of indigenous communities and equitable benefit sharing arrangements.

Taking cognizance of the provisions of the CBD, and to deal with extensive pressure on our biological resources, India has enacted an umbrella legislation called Biological Diversity Act-2002 (No. 18 of 2003), and also notified the Biological Diversity Rules-2004 for guidance and compliance by various stakeholders, including the Union and State Governments, Non-state sectors, and individuals. The Act aims at conservation of biological resources as well as facilitating access to them in a sustainable manner and through a just process. The salient features of this act are as follows (NBA, 2004).

Reproduction in fungi is the formation of new individuals having all the characters of species. It is of two types. Asexual, somatic, or vegetative reproduction does not involve the union of nuclei of sex cells or sex organs. Sexual reproduction is characterized by the union of two opposite nuclei. During reproduction entire thallus is converted into one or more reproductive units. It is called holocarpic fungi (holo = whole, korpos = fungi) ex. Plasmodiophora and Synchytrium. In Plasmodiophora vegetative body is plasmodium, which is transformed into reproductive structure. In some fungi only a part of thallus is transformed into one or more reproductive structures. (eu = true, good, carpus = fruit). These fungi are known as eucarpic. Both somatic and reproductive structures coexist. Ex. Rhizopus, Puccinia and Helminthosporium.

1. INTRODUCTION

During fermentation, the fruit wines have to be monitored for different parameters to know the progress of fermentation and to control the quality of the finished products. It is essential to maintain the quality of the products, for which it is necessary to keep a complete record of wine fermentation. One such form is the fermentation control record or fermentation logbook, which is kept to monitor and record fermentation progress. It includes the name of fruit, variety, original characteristics of juice/pulp, amelioration, tank number, inoculum type and quantities, sampling time, date of start of fermentation and completion. It should also have daily record of temperature of fermentation, total soluble solid or ^oBrix reading, titrable acidity and volatile acidity, racking time/date and other comments on the fermentation. Fermentation control records should be completed and all new wines be entered in the bulk wine book inventory, the annual supplemental records can be kept in a file entitled, for example ‘Vintage season 2018’.

2.1 Geological and accelerated erosion

Erosion has always taken place, and always will. The surface of the earth is constantly changing, with mountains rising, valleys being cut deeper and wider, the coast line receding here and advancing there. The physical pattern of the surface of the earth which we see today is not the result of some single cataclysmic sculpturing but the result of changes so infinitely slow that only after centuries is the effect noticeable. Erosion is simply one of the aspects of the constant process of change. It is fundamental to the formation of alluvial soils and sedimentary rocks. Man’s activities seldom slow down or halt the process but frequently speed it up. We usually refer to geological erosion or normal erosion, or natural erosion when we mean that which results only from the forces of nature, and to accelerated erosion when the process is influenced by man.

When trying to predict the probable severity of man-made erosion it helps to consider the rate of geological erosion. If the conditions of climate and topography are such that geological erosion is quicker than usual, then these sameronditions will also lead to particularly severe accelerated erosion. Extreme examples of both kinds of erosion are shown in plates 2.1 and 2.2.

1.1 Introduction

Orchard is an area of land on which fruit trees are grown. An orchard is purposeful planting of fruit trees that is maintained for food production. It encompasses fruit or nut-producing trees which are grown for commercial production. Orchard management refers to management practices planned in the fruit orchard to maximize production of high-quality fruit and increase grower profitability. Decisions on soil preparation, crop cultivars, orchard systems and designs, location and site selection, making provision for water availability, canopy management, nutrient management, orchard floor management, pest and disease management, harvesting and mechanization etc. need to be taken care of while establishing an orchard. It is easy to establish an orchard considering its features critically but difficult to manage afterwards. It needs high managerial skills and technically skilled manpower to carry out different orchard operations. Orcharding is a long-term investment. Fruit plants once planted remain committed to the land for many years. Being perennial in nature, any mistake committed during initial years of orchard planning, is very tough to rectify.

The heart is a muscular structure that contracts in a rhythmic pattern to pump blood. The heart functions as a pump to provide a continuous circulation of blood throughout the body.The blood vessels that take blood from the heart to the various tissues are called arteries.Arterioles open into a network of capillaries which constitute the microcirculation. Circulation of blood in the body is important for the transport of nutrients to all parts of the body and for the transport of gases and waste products. The primary function of the heart is to transfer sufficient blood from the venous system to the arterial side of the circulation under sufficient pressure to maintain the circulatory needs of the body.

Substances which are in excess of the body and/or are harmful need to be removed constantly. This function is carried out by the excretory organs which include skin, gastrointestinal tract and kidney. Skin excretes water and salts in the form of sweat. Gastrointestinal tract removes undigested food material as well as some heavy metals in the form of faeces. Kidneys are the main excretory organs which together with a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder and urethra constitute the excretory system. Renal function is essential for homeostasis.

The whole plants or their parts have been used as source of medicine and health tonics both in medical and veterinary practice since time immemorial. Many of
the active ingredients in chemically manufactured drugs have been originally derived from plant components (e.g. pyrethroids). Despite availability of
the modern allopathic medicines, herbal medicines are still used on a very large scale. In the back drop of current global trade of herbal medicine and
intellectual property right (IPR) scenario, and to overcome side effects of ‘single golden molecular bullet’ drug technologies of twentieth century, there
is an upsurge of interest in traditional practices.

A large number of genetic resources, species, and ecosystems are under severe threat. Many species have gone extinct and many more are being pushed towards extinction. Most of the ecosystems have also gone into what we can call functional extinction. The major factors becoming threats to biodiversity are anthropogenic. Human activities, in essence, are not benevolent for biodiversity to flourish in natural systems. Burgeoning human populations are the root cause of biodiversity destruction. Changing human lifestyles fed by a materialistic economy are further acting as catalysts for the ever-increasing human populations to destroy biodiversity evolved over millions of years amid terrestrial conditions favorable for the origin and prevalence of an astonishing variety of life forms on Earth.

There is hardly any threat to biodiversity due to natural factors except those inherent in the designs of natural evolution. A species at a certain point of time in its evolutionary history is destined to vanish, but the void in nature created due to this loss is filled by the evolution of new life forms. Not only the void is filled, the nature gradually goes on enriching itself 

Abstract

Extension education as a subject field as well as extending services to clients is found to be associated with the bio-production system and some service areas where the actual stakeholders are not a part of the specified field of knowledge and technology. Taking the example of a bio-production system like agriculture, horticulture, fishery, animal and veterinary science, sericulture, forestry, etc. - paradoxically contrasting to an industrial production system, in which actual practitioners (farmers) do not come to respective institutions where the S & T inputs in the respective fields are generated and disseminated. There lies the necessity and importance of extension in order to reach them with appropriate S & T inputs which can boost up the production and productivity of crops and lands. This is particularly necessary for meeting the food, feed, fiber requirement of the ever-increasing human and animal population as well as to maintain seed reserve. Improvement of bio-production systems in terms of their production and productivity is largely dependent on public (government) funds and efforts are being made to improve these sectors through a different extension program. Since independence through different projects and programme, like, IAAP, IADP, HYVP, IRDP, Training & Visit, IVLP, NAIP, NATP, and many others have been launched. But there was criticism that these projects were not managed efficiently to yield the expected outcome.

. Introduction

A primary issue for modern horticulture is facing two contradictory objectives, such as the need to produce food for the increasing world population and to minimize damage to the environment, which can in turn negatively impact horticulture. Fertilizer and chemical use and manufacture are hazardous to the environment and humans. As a result, new and effective environmentally friendly compounds are required. Plant biostimulants, which are harmless for humans and the environment, are one answer. They are particularly useful for lowering pesticides in agriculture. Plant biostimulants have become popular in farming and cultivation in recent years.

1.1 Introduction Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], a cultivated diploid (2n = 20) tropical cereal C4 grass plant, is currently the fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world and the first important crop in Sudan where drought stress is a major productivity-limiting factor since most of the sorghum is grown under rain-fed conditions. It is a monocotyledon plant of tropical origin, belonging to the Poaceae family. Starch, followed by protein, fat, and fibre, makes up the majority of sorghum’s nutritional makeup, which is similar to maize in terms of its nutritional content. Compared to other cereals, including wheat and maize, the crop exhibits comparatively good water use efficiency. Sorghum is a valuable botanical model crop for other tropical grasses with complex genomes that use C4 photosynthesis due to its vast adaption to severe settings, resistance to stress conditions, diverse germplasm collections, and short (710 Mb) genome size. Sorghum, a historically important source of food and a staple crop, is becoming a crop with a variety of applications, including food, fuel, fodder, and a model for the functional genetics and genomics of tropical grasses.

1.1 Introduction In parallel with the expansion of organically cultivated land and low-input agricultural system, there is an increasing demand for crops that have promising potentials to be grown successfully in these systems. Buckwheat is generally sown in smaller areas, which may be found suitable for low-input agricultural systems. Buckwheat is a fast-growing crop with a variety of utilizations. Buckwheat, one of the pseudo and minor-cereals, has the ability to satisfy the rapidly rising population’s ever-increasing food need in the nation’s hill regions in the context of changing climatic conditions. It is also known as common buckwheat or Fagopyrum esculentum, it is not a cereal grain, but rather a seed that is related to rhubarb and sorrel. It has a unique nutty flavour that makes it an excellent ingredient in a variety of dishes. It is known in India by a variety of names, including ogal, phaphar, bresha, mittahe dyat, dro, and brotitae.

Introduction to Statistics

The word statistics has been derived from Latin word “status”, the German word “statistik”, the Italian word “statistica” or the French word “statistique”. During early periods, it was used by emperors and kings only for collecting the information about state and other information which was needed about their people, their number, land, status of people, revenue of the state etc. Gradually, it meaning and uses extended and there onwards its nature changed.

Some scientist/ researchers were given definition of statistics as per time and place.

• An ancient date, A.L. Bowley gives some definitions according their use and place. He seems to be inadequate because these do not include all aspects of statistics. As per time, place or requirement, he gave three definitions of statistics:

• Statistics may be called the science of counting

• Statistics may rightly be called the science of average

• Statistics as the science of counting and average

Introduction

Plum, scientifically known as Prunus domestica, is a popular fruit-bearing tree belonging to the Rosaceae family. Renowned for its delicious and versatile fruits, plum cultivation has a long history that spans different cultures and regions. Plums are enjoyed worldwide both in their fresh form and processed into various culinary delights. Because of its temperate character, plum is a significant crop in hills, but it is just a modest fruit crop in Punjab and the north Indian plains. Because it requires little freezing and has a shorter juvenile phase, it is ideal for planting as a filler fruit plant in mango, litchi, and pear orchards. There are a few solid-block plum plantations in the Amritsar, Fazilka, Ambala, and Kurukshetra regions as well. Due to the trees’ abundant f lowering, high fruit set, and early ripening habits of varieties suitable for plains, they are extremely productive. A fully developed tree can typically produce 50–60 kg of fruit. Plum trees are deciduous and typically bear fruits during the summer season. The fruits come in a wide range of colors, including shades of purple, red, yellow, and green, with variations in size and flavor. This diversity in plum varieties allows for a delightful selection for consumers, catering to their individual preferences.

A significant nut that originated in Central Asia, the almond (Prunus communis) is now grown all over the world in hot, dry Mediterranean climatic zones (Monteiro et al., 2001). The Rosaceae family it belongs to (Martinez-Gómez et al., 2007). Number of chromosomes is 2n = 16. Today, the USA produces the most almonds, followed by Australia and Spain. Due to genetic, ecological, and processing-related variables, different cultivars of almond exhibit varied chemical profiles. Regular nut consumption has been linked to health benefits, particularly in the fight against cardiometabolic disorders (Massantini et al., 2022). Consuming nuts has been shown to have beneficial benefits against a variety of illnesses, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, according to epidemiological research and clinical trials (Chen et al., 2006). Regular nuts consumers also exhibit better metabolic profiles and smaller waist circumferences. The edible portion of an almond, known as the almond kernel, is made up of two enormous cotyledons that are protected by an exterior hull and an inside shell (Aydin et al., 2003). When the seed reaches maturity, the hull opens and the seed readily separates. Approximately 50% of almonds are lipids, 25% are proteins, and 20% are carbs. Almonds also have a low moisture content and a variety of minor beneficial components (Ahrens et al., 2005). Almonds’ macro- and micronutrient composition is related to their consumption’s positive effects on health (Esfahlan et al., 2010). The lipid profile can be highlighted as one of the components with beneficial health properties. According to Roncero et al.(2020), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) make up 60% of the lipid profile, followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), fibre, vitamins, minerals, phytosterols, and polyphenols.

The systematic exploration of the biological diversity of valuable compounds and organisms has emerged as a promising avenue for aquaculture and fisheries. As global demand for seafood continues to rise, coupled with the increasing challenges of overfishing and environmental degradation, the quest for sustainable solutions has intensified. Bioprospecting in aquaculture involves the identification and utilization of novel marine organisms, including microorganisms, algae, and invertebrates, for the development of aquafeeds, pharmaceuticals, and bioactive compounds. The exploration of untapped genetic resources in fisheries can lead to the discovery of resilient and economically valuable fish species, contributing to the diversification of aquaculture production. The integration of bioprospecting into aquaculture and fishery practices holds immense promise for fostering sustainable development, ensuring food security, and mitigating the environmental impacts of traditional practices. However, successful implementation requires a balanced approach that considers economic, social, and environmental factors, ultimately guiding the industry toward a more resilient and ecologically responsible future.

Introduction

Plastics has the versatile properties like light weight, durability, less expensiveness, and it is readily available for the consumers usage. Due to these diverse properties, the usage of the plastics is increasing day to day and their production has been increased drastically in the past 50 years (Cressey, 2016). At present, global plastics production has reached to 159 million tonnes. This diversified consumption has led to the production of enormous amount of plastic waste (Hahladakis et al., 2018) and their properties allows for long range transport in the ocean (Baalkhuyur et al., 2018). According to the Earth Action reports, nearly 68,64,299 tonnes of plastic waste will end up in nature due to imbalance between the plastics consumption and production. India is among 12 countries responsible for 52 % of the world mismanaged plastic waste (Plastic Overshoot Day: Report 2023).

Marine litter occurrence and impacts are common in worldwide marine systems (Bhattacharya and Khare, 2019) and they are degraded into micro sized particles called microplastics through a various physical, chemical and biological processes such as U-V light, wind and ocean currents (Solomon and Palanisami, 2016). Microplastics are < 5mm in size and are further divided into large and small microplastics of size 1–5 mm and 20 µm–1 mm, respectively (Loder and Gerdtz, 2015). Microplastics are classified into 2 categories: i) primary microplastics, intentionally produced as small sizes, used in cosmetics, microfibers from clothing, fishing nets, and their shape, size, colour, and chemical composition may vary depending upon the products. ii) Secondary microplastics are the tiny particles including fibres, fragments formed by the degradation or breakdown of larger plastics particles due to the UV rays from sunlight oxidation process. These particles are generated from the plastic films, accidentally or intentionally discarded fishing ropes and nets, plastic bottles and plastic bags etc. (Andrady, 2011).

As the global population grows and consumer demand for seafood increases, the need for sustainable, efficient and technologically advanced fishing practices is becoming increasingly important (Prapti et al., 2022). This is where IoT introduces an innovative range of devices and solutions to meet the emerging demands of the sector.

Overview of IoT Applications in Fisheries

IoT technology opens up a box of possibilities in the fisheries sector. Real time monitoring of marine conditions, vessel tracking and fleet management, aquaculture optimization, supply chain management and predictive analytics are among the primary applications explored in this chapter. By analyzing these applications, we show how IoT increases the efficiency and sustainability of the fishing industry.

Aquatic habitats are essential to preserving the delicate balance of life in the complex web of ecosystems that make up our world. We must investigate novel and sustainable strategies to maintain the health and vigour of aquatic species because we are the custodians of these delicate ecosystems. In the course of this endeavour, an intriguing chapter titled "Green Medicine for Aquatic Wellness: Phytotherapy as a Promising Approach to Fish Health Management" is presented. A world filled with different aquatic life exists within the glittering depths of our lakes, rivers, and seas. Each species is a vital component of the aquatic ecology, from the colourful tropical fish that adorn coral reefs to the hardy creatures that live in freshwater streams. The peace of their environments might be disturbed by a number of diseases that these animals are prone to, just like any other living thing.

Introduction

Lymphatic tissue in general consists of reticulin fibres and fixed cells (macrophages and reticulin cells), as well as free cells (lymphocytes, plasma cells and granulocytes). In loose lymphatic tissue, fixed cells predominate whereas, in dense lymphatic tissue, free cells predominate. The stem cells which colonize the embryonic thymus and bursa originate in the area pellucida or embryo proper in birds. Late in embryonic development, stem cells may be found in the liver and spleen. In adult life they exist primarily in the bone marrow. The avian lymphatic system is divided into:

A. Primary lymphatic tissue (central): Primary lymphoid organs in birds include the thymus and the bursa of Fabricius, which are the places where lymphocytes develop, and the T-cell and B-cell receptor genes rearrange. The avian primary lymphoid organs, the thymus and the bursa of Fabricius, undergo age-dependent changes leading in some cases to the complete atrophy of the organ. Interestingly, the bursa of Fabricius can act as both i.e. primary and secondary lymphoid organ. Primary lymphatic tissue is antigen dependant, and in it incoming stem cells differentiate into immunologically competent B and T cells, which then migrate to the secondary lymphatic tissue

Conventional methods, while foundational, face significant limitations, including the availability of resources and variability in hands-on experiences. As veterinary education evolves, there is a growing recognition of the potential for disruptive technologies to address these challenges and enhance learning outcomes.

Equines are a fascinating and diverse group of mammals that have played a significant role in human history and continue to do so today. From the majestic horses used for transportation, sport, and work, to the hardy donkeys and mules used for farming and packing, equines have been an essential part of human societies for thousands of years. Equines are social animals and usually live in groups or herds. They form strong bonds with their herd members and communicate with each other through a range of vocalizations, body language, and scent cues. Equines also engage in playful behaviour, particularly when they are young. They can be seen running, kicking, bucking, and frolicking in the fields as a way of expending energy and developing physical coordination [6].

This is a group of mammals that belong to the family Equidae known for their slender legs, hooves, and long faces. Large, soft and expressive eyes, a velvety muzzle, a forelock adorning a smooth face these are just a few of the attributes of the equine head that beckon horse lovers. The equine head, which accounts for 10% of a horse’s total weight, houses a series of intricate turbinates within the nasal passageways. Turbinates are a network of bones, vessels, and tissue that warms, humidifies, and filters the air the horse inhales. In addition, seven air-filled sinus cavities called the paranasal sinuses sit on each side of the head, above, below, and between the eyes. A young horse starts out with teeth that extend up into the sinuses; with wear and age, the teeth descend into the mouth. Eventually, in a horse’s golden years, the sinuses are mostly empty of teeth.The head also contains a plexus of nerves and blood supply in addition to the eyes, ears, nostrils, lymph nodes, guttural pouches, brain, and more than 30 bones[6,7].
