Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) or Imli is also called  Indian Date. It is a large broad leaved, tropical tree found in India and many parts of Asia.  Tamarind is native to tropical Africa and grows wild throughout  Sudan. It was introduced to India so long ago that it is now reported as indigenous. Sometimes during  sixteenth century, it was introduced into America and today it is widely grown in Mexico.
 
There are large areas of marginal and waste lands, which are not suitable for cultivation of fruits like banana, citrus, sapota, litchi, mango, pomegranate etc., either due to poor quality of soil or lack of water resources. Such lands are suitable for  cultivation of underutilized fruit crops like tamarind which is not so popular among  farmers due to following reasons:

The term “Integrated Farming System (IFS)” (or simply “integrated farming”) is a term used frequently and generically to describe a method of farming that is more integrated than monoculture methods. By virtue of the intensification of crops and related industries, an IFS offers the chance to enhance economic yield per unit area per unit time. This is accomplished through the system’s use of several crop rotations. It improves the efficiency of fertilizers and natural resources, improves the recycling of nutrients, and contributes to increased food security. The IFS technique promotes ecological intensification by lowering the amount of anthropogenic inputs while simultaneously enhancing the performance of ecosystem services such as the recycling of nutrients, the creation of soil, and the soil’s fertility. IFSs that are well- managed are seen to be safer than those that are not because they benefit from synergy among businesses, diversification of crops, and ecological stability (Behera et al., 2015). It requires paying attention to the minute details and constantly striving to improve in all facets of agricultural production through well- informed administrative practices. The IFS approach is widely regarded as the most important strategy for enhancing the nutritional status of families and ensuring the viability of their livelihoods. The research strategy that is centered on crops and cropping systems needs to give way to the research strategy that is based on agricultural systems, especially for smaller farms (Jha et al., 2011). Recycling of waste and increased effectiveness in terms of land utilization are two essential components of the IFS. The components and enterprises that make up the IFS might differ from region to region. This is because agroclimatic conditions, such as the kind of land, the availability of water, the socioeconomic standing of farmers, and market demand, all play a role. For effective holistic agricultural systems to be constructed, there must be strong connections and complementarities between the various components (Bell et al., 2014). Integrating land- based businesses into the biophysical and socio- economic contexts of farmers, such as aquaculture, poultry, duckeries, apiaries, as well as field and horticultural crops, is essential in the IFS to make farming highly profitable and reliable (Behera et al.,2004: Kashyap et al., 2015). Farmers who are limited in their access to resources can achieve sustainable output through the careful administration of agricultural residues and the distribution of limited resources

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FUNGI

1. Thallus

The body of the fungus is called as Thallus, which is without stem root and leaves. It maybe Plasmodial, Pseudoplasmodial , Pseudomycelial or Mycelial. A single thread like filament is called as hypha. A hypha is made up of a thin, transparent tabular wall filled or lined with a layer of protoplasm.

A group of hypha constituting the body of fungus is called as mycelium may be septate or aseptate. i.e coenocytic.

a) Coenocytic or Nonseptate or Aseptate Mycelium

When mycelium is not divided by cross walls called as Cornocytic mycelium.

Depending upon the nature of parasitism with the host plant, mycelium is either ecotophytic or endophytic.

b) Septate Mycelium

When mycelium is divided by cross walls or septa called as septate mycelium.

It is necessary to consider both micro and macro climate while planning scientific livestock management strategies. Thermal comfort of animals is the most important environmental consideration affecting the production performance of domestic animals in general and the dairy cattle in particular. Various components of climate like air temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind velocity and precipitation affect the thermal comfort of animals and their performance. As these factors produce a combined effect rather than each component alone thermal indices involving two more of these factors are useful for rational decision making information for livestock managers. Considering only the direct effects of microclimate will be an over simplification of the problems because the indirect effects of the macroclimate operating through feed supplies, feed quality, parasitism, and other factors are equally or more important. These factors confound the direct effects of climatic elements and under many situations far overshadow their effects. Thus, evaluation of the direct and indirect effects of climate independent of each other is necessary. We will also examine each factor separately for easiness of understanding keeping in mind that the heat exchange of the animals with their environment is a combined effect of all these intertwined with complex biological and physical factors. Yamamoto (1983) concluded “Heat exchanges between animal and their environment are not readily explainable in terms of physical principles because the relationships are considerably modified by animal factors”. The combined effects of the climatic factors involved in heat exchange between any homoeothermic animal and its surrounding has led to the development of Thermal Indices as a basis for assessing the biological effect and consequent impact of thermal environment (Hahn 2003). Studies on the thermal environment and methods to represent in reliable indices are more important in the tropical world in general and hot tropical humid world in particular.

The advantages and disadvantages of thermal indices and how it can be used as useful guide for environment management of dairy cows are illustrated in this paper through examples. Many salient basic aspects were noted by Thomas C.K. way back in 1969 but the exact use of this information for the farmers is a far cry.

Introduction

The diversifi cation and modernization of the present agricultural and other related activities supported by efficient on and off farm processing of the commodities for the purpose of value-addition is expected to increase food production and create employment and income generation. Adding value to food commodities after harvest is also aimed at minimizing the losses during storage and to maintain the quality of product. Efficient post-production practices, particularly the preservation and processing of agricultural and allied produces may bring a wide range of benefits to the people in this country, generating job opportunities by opening up village-level processing units. The goals of post-harvest and food processing technology are loss prevention as well as adding value to the harvested biomass, which result in more income to the farmers/processors and better quality produce provided to the consumers. Post-harvest and food processing technology are commodity-and location-specific and it is done at home, village and/or cottage levels at small and large industrial scale. On-farm post-harvest storage and primary processing integrated with production technology help to generate more employment opportunities and additional income for rural people. Minimization of the post-harvest losses is an important means to increase per capita food availability. It also helps to generate more employment and income. Investment in post-harvest measures is more economical and time saving than in productivity to obtain the same amount of a particular commodity. Furthermore, post-harvest measures automatically add value to the raw commodities as they pass on their marketing channels. Adoption of postharvest technologies and value additive measures are very strong tools for rural and social development through employment and income generation. Development and adoption of efficient value addition practices will enhance national food supply and sustain food security even at the household level. Fruits and vegetables processing industries have a good deal of potential in serving the rural economy. First, it helps in generating more employment for rural people. It will also check mobility of rural masses towards urban areas in search of employment. Employment opportunities offered by agroprocessing industries are plenty to the farm population and entrepreneur seeking self-employment. Cottage scale units particularly offer self-employment opportunities. Traditionally women handle food and are familiar with skills of food processing. In order to improve the status of living of woman and rural food processing, low cost appropriate fruit and vegetable processing technologies offer excellent opportunities for production of processed foods. The improvement of status of socially backward and landless labor classes will be possible only through providing non-farm employment at their doorsteps. This will generate a sense of security and confidence amongst rural people for overcoming uncertainty in agricultural income and providing self-employment to the land-less labor. The locally available untapped resources should be used effectively.

Introduction

Digitalization is transforming the digital economy, offering opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses, and transforming production and trade. The rapid advancement of technology and information systems has led to significant changes in both individuals and companies, particularly in the realm of digitalization in commerce (BarNir et al., 2003). Digitalization uses digital technologies to revolutionize business models, simplify transactions, and enhance value-producing opportunities in processes like customer service, shipping, buying, and selling (Zhang et al., 2013). All over the world, businesses are transitioning from manual to e-commerce for benefits such as efficiency, productivity, security, competitiveness, cost reduction, marketing, promotion, and information distribution (Daniel & Wilson, 2002; Gefen, 2000). E-commerce, a key feature, is reshaping global production and trade (Koh et al., 2017; Scalco, 2017). Moreover, the e-commerce industry has seen a substantial transition over the last few decades, due to rapid technical improvements and shifting customer behaviors.

In most countries there is no legislative definition of the term drawing a border line between conventional and functional foods is challenging even for nutrition and food experts. Functional foods do not have a specific place in food law; consequently there is a great deal of confusion about what they are, could or should be. A common perception is that functional foods are foodstuffs either with one or more specific added ingredients (components), or certain substances of common ingredients (components) removed and which are claimed to have a positive influence on human health or well being. The term ‘functional foods’ for this group of products is considered to be an unfortunate one since all foodstuffs are or should be functional and a more appropriate term might be helpful.

A same active ingredient are available in the market with different trade name and are the product of different companies. These may also differ in their formulation and hazard class (table 7), the knowledge of which is necessary in the plant disease management in view of their effect on the pathogen, ecosystem and environment.

6.1 Introduction

The World Health Organization (WHO) compiled a list of 20,000 medicinal plants used in different parts of the world. An estimated 15,000 medicinal plant species, forming about 21% of the total plant species used for medicinal purposes in the world, fall in the endangered category (Schippmann et al., 2006). In India, medicinal plant species used under different traditional systems to a large extent are still gathered and collected from the wild in from of roots, bark, wood, stem and even the whole plant causing severe destruction of their habitat, resulting in loss of species/populations and erosion of genetic diversity. The remaining few are cultivated as crop plants, but marginally because of lack of assured market and can be safely termed as commercially under utilized and are also under threat. Therefore, despite India being rich in plants species with medicinal properties, genetic diversity within the species and the associated traditional knowledge regarding their use, the lack of awareness regarding the loss of species and genetic diversity due to destructive harvesting from the wild and many other factors, such as infrastructure development, iintroduction of exotic species is causing depletion of genetic diversity or loss of indigenous MAPs.

Importance of Rainfed Farming

In India, rain dependent areas are vast and they have a great contribution to make in agricultural production, with just 1/40^th of the world land. India supports over half of its buffaloes and over one seventh of its cattle and goats that also share land utilization with humans and add to the national wealth. The second largest number (after Africa) of drought victims of the world live in India, out of 143 m ha cultivated land about 43 m ha are under irrigation and the rest of the area (about 70%) is rainfed but all is not too dry. About 90% of it located in the north-west part, out of which 60% is located in Rajasthan and sustains a human population of 20 million and a total livestock population of 23 million. The dry land areas contribute about 42% of food grains, almost all the coarse grains and about 75% of pulses and oil seeds of the total production of the country. About 2/3 of rice and rapeseed mustard and 1/3 of wheat are grown in rainfed areas. A large portion of industrially important crops such as cotton, groundnut and castor are cultivated under dry land conditions and has a great contribution to make to the production of food, fibre, fuel and furniture timber etc. Dry land agriculture may be classified into three groups on the basis of annual rainfall.

a) Dry farming : Cultivation of crops in areas where annual rainfall is less then 750 mm and crop failures due to prolonged dry spells during crop period are most common. Dry farming is practiced in arid regions with the help of moisture conservation practices. Alternate land use system is suggested in this region.

b) Dryland farming: Cultivation of crops in areas where annual rainfall is more than 750 mm but less than 1150 mm is called dryland farming. Dry spells may occur, but crop failures are less frequent. Higher evapotranspiration (ET) than the total precipitation is the main reason for moisture deficit in these areas. The soil and moisture conservation measures are the key for dryland farming practice in semi-arid regions. Drainage facility may be required especially in black soils.

1. Introduction

Global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 (UN report, 2019) and food requirement will betwofold of the current levels to feed the growing population. Asia and the Pacific regionaccounts for> 70% of the global population but has only 30% of the world’s arable land (FAO, 2021). The simultaneous cultivation of two or more crops in the same field is known as intercropping. Sustainable agriculture aims to at least build agricultural systems that are inspired by nature. Efficiency and the idea that there are no waste products in nature are key components of sustainable agriculture since nature incorporates plants and animals into a variety of landscapes. When domesticating crops replaced hunting and gathering, the landscape became altered. Due to humankind’s limited ability to produce a wide variety of agricultural plants and livestock, the amount of biological diversity throughout a large portion of the planet has significantly decreased. In nature, cooperation predominates over competition. Mutually beneficial interactions between species within groups are one example of cooperation. A few types of creatures may initially inhabit an abandoned agricultural field if it is left unattended and unplanted, but over several years, a complex community made up of numerous wild species emerges. When a community reaches a high level of variety, it becomes stable. Diverse communities are stable and have fewer swings in species abundance. Enterprise diversification, crop rotation, the use of windbreaks, the provision of more habitats for microorganisms, intercropping, and the integration of crop farming with animal production are methods that increase diversity and stability on the farm (Reddy and Willey,1981; Reddy et al., 1992). Each crop should have enough room while growing with another one or more to enhance cooperation and minimize competition. This is made possible by the elements of spatial layout, plant density, crop maturity dates, and plant architecture. The spatial arrangements are Row intercropping— Growing two or more crops together at the same time with at least one crop planted in rows; Strip intercropping— Growing two or more crops together in strips wide enough to separate crop production using machines, but close enough to interact; Mixed cropping— Growing two or more crops together in no distinct row arrangement; Relay intercropping— Plant a second crop into a standing crop at a time when the standing crop is at its reproductive stage but before harvesting.

Insect pests are responsible for 10.8% of crop losses on an average. Their management is crucial in agriculture to protect crops and boost output. In organic farming systems, preventative measures are taken more often than curative. Understanding the impacts that the local climate, topography, soils, and all other facets of the production system are expected to have on crop performance and potential host/pest complexes is essential for developing successful organic crop protection techniques. Crop rotation, soil health management, host plant resistance, field location, monitoring pests and their natural enemies, vegetation management to enhance natural enemies and exert direct effects on pest populations, releases of bio-control agents and use of approved insecticides of biological origin are highlighted in organic farming in order to reduce pest damage. The safe and environmentally friendly methods for managing the pests in organic farming are discussed in this chapter.

The emphasis of organic farming's pest management strategies is on the employment of numerous and diverse strategies integrated into the cropping system, which ultimately lowers the pest incidence. Pest and disease options mainly dependent on preventive measures in organic farming rather than curative and maintaining healthy ecosystems is priority. The farmer should have a better grasp of the pests and beneficial organisms that exist in the specific crop ecology when practising organic farming. The farmers must follow a monitoring mechanism in which they may able to act on the pest before they reach devastating levels.

Livestock nutrition is a complex field that involves the interplay of various nutrients to ensure optimal health, growth, reproduction and productivity. Nutrients do not function in isolation; rather, they interact in multiple ways synergistically or antagonistically affecting digestion, absorption, metabolism, and overall animal performance. Understanding these interrelationships is crucial for formulating balanced diets that meet the specific needs of different livestock species at various physiological stages. Nutrients in livestock diets can be broadly classified into macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
Each nutrient has a specific role, but their interactions influence bioavailability and utilization. For instance, dietary proteins and carbohydrates have a direct impact on energy metabolism, affecting the animal’s ability to utilize other nutrients efficiently. Excess protein can increase energy expenditure due to deamination, while a deficiency in energy can limit protein synthesis. Similarly, the balance between dietary fat and carbohydrate affects energy density and digestion, influencing growth performance and body composition.
Among minerals, calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) exhibit a well-known interrelationship. Both are essential for bone development, but their absorption and utilization depend on the Ca:P ratio in the diet. An imbalance whether an excess or deficiency of one can result in metabolic disorders such as rickets or osteoporosis. Additionally, excess phosphorus reduces calcium absorption, leading to skeletal deformities, while excessive calcium can interfere with magnesium and zinc absorption, affecting overall metabolic functions. The interaction between iron, copper, and zinc is another critical aspect of mineral
