The purpose of PCA 1960 is to protect animals from being subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering. This at consists of 6 chapters covering 41 sections. This has been amended in 1982. The sections under each chapter have been concised for easy understanding. This provides only baseline information about the act.

Preventive Homeopathy

Homeopathy is entirely a unique philosophy different from that of conventional modern medicine. It is considered as a tailor made system of therapy administering a medicine fitting well in the totality of physical and psychological symptoms seen in an ailing individual whether it is human or animal. Homeopathy does not restrict to restoring health of ailing subjects (treatment of clinical diseases) but also offers scope for preventing diseases as well. It can play significant role in preventing enzootic and epizootic infectious diseases through administration of nosodes.

Nosodes

Nosodes are important class of homeopathic drugs specifically prepared from secretions or fluids of the diseased subjects or their infectious agents in the similar manner as other homeopathic drugs are made (process of dilution and succession). The word “nosode “ is derived from the Greek “nosos” (disease) and “eidos” (like). Nosodes are potentized remedies prepared from diseased tissues , discharges (products of disease) or disease causing agents (bacteria or virus) in a specialized manner following standard protocol. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann first prepared remedies from diseased tissues (mainly the miasmatic nosodes) for the three miasms (Psora, Sycosis and Syphilis) corresponding as Psorinum, Medorrhinum, and Syphylinum. Of which first two have common use in veterinary homeopathy. The nosodes have undergone proving similar to other drugs, and their use in veterinary homeopathy is in the same manner as with any other remedy i.e. matching patient symptoms with those of the remedy.

Price determination under perfect competition - It can be called as a market structure characterized by a complete absence of competition or rivalry among the individual firms. The sellers and buyers cannot determine the price, only the Industry decides the price of the goods. It means the forces of supply and demand determine the price of the goods

Perfect competition is defined as a market situation where there are a large number of sellers of a homogeneous product. An individual firm supplies a very small portion of the total output and is not powerful enough to exert an influence on the market price. A single buyer, however large, is not in a position to influence the market price.

Demand under perfect competition

Demand refers to the quantity of a product that consumers are willing to purchase at a particular price, while other factors remain constant. A consumer demands more quantity at lower price and less quantity at higher price. Therefore, the demand varies at different prices. Market demand means the sum of the quantity demanded by individual buyers at different prices.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyses the price discovery relationships of future and spot prices of ten agricultural commodities during the period of post sub-prime crisis i.e., from 2010-2015. As per the decisions derived by the study, we found that except Turmeric price discovery is confirmed for all the nine agricultural commodities. The results are quite encouraging showing the emerging character of the agricultural commodities in India. Although, it doesn’t assure the competitiveness of the Indian commodities market. The statistical diffusion of the findings is quite relevant in policy making, hedging and investing decisions. Now a day, these markets are becoming more efficient and mature in terms of information, also market regulators are working towards their development. The study suggests that Forward Market Commission (FMC) should be given more power to regulate and control the market, which will ensure the efficient market situations in these commodities market. It also suggests that in order to facilitate more transparency in commodities market, like stock market, electronically traded stock exchanges must be developed. All these suggestions of the study are targeted to strengthen the derivative market trading in agricultural commodities to achieve efficient price discovery mechanism.

The results pertaining to the present investigation, “Diagnostic Study of Farmers in context of Price spread analysis, marketing pattern and Potential assessment of agricultural diversification in Chenani Block of Udhampur district” have been presented in this chapter.

4.1 Cost and return analysis of cereals, vegetables and fruit crops

For financial analysis of different enterprises, it is necessary to workout costs of various inputs, which needs to be deducted from the value of inputs. The cost and return analysis of cereal crop and vegetables in Mantalai village of Chenani block is presented in Table 4.1. Per hectare Cost A which included all the variable costs excluding the family human labour were found to be highest (?55416.38) for the cultivation of garlic followed by tomato (?54260.75) whereas raddish incurred lowest of ?29361.33. The cost B which included the fixed costs in addition to cost A were ?39020.89 for maize, ?59074.66 for tomato, ?37280.11 for cucumber, ?33361.33 for raddish, ?41053.97 for beans and ?59416.38 for garlic. The cost C i.e. total item wise per acre operational costs which also included the imputed value of family labour were found to be highest (?149074.66/ha) in tomato and lowest of ?39361.33/ha in raddish. The cost C increases in case of tomato to such an extent only because of the addition of family labour. Cost C* was also calculated by adding 10 per cent of cost C as management cost to total cost.

Pricing

Pricing goods and services is a critical job to maximize the profit of business organizations. Price is the most important determinant of the profitability of the business. Setting the right price can influence the quantities of various products or services that consumers will buy, which in turn determines the total revenue and the profit of the business. Price is the only element in the marketing mix of a firm that generate revenue.

The price of a product or service is the number of monetary units a customer has to pay to receive one unit of product or service (Simon, 1989).

Price mechanism is an economic term that refers to the buyers and sellers who negotiate prices of goods or services depending on demand and supply. A price mechanism or market-based mechanism refers to a wide variety of ways to match up buyers and sellers through price rationing.An example of a price mechanism uses announced bid and ask prices. Generally speaking, when two parties wish to engage in a trade, the purchaser will announce a price he is willing to pay (the bid price) and seller will announce a price he is willing to accept (the ask price).

Basmati Rice

Basmati Rice is a simple grain, yet throughout history it has been on royal menus of various cultures as the main dish. From the pilav of Turkey, polou of Persia, pilafs of the Steppes, the isotos and paellas of the Mediterranean, to the pulau of India it has been served to great sultans, maharajahs, shahs and emperors. Spices, nuts, dried fruits, vegetables and herbs are a natural for Basmati rice. Basmati rice transforms rice dishes into extraordinary meals. Also known as the “Queen of Rice”, this highly aromatic grain that is long and elegantly thin, has originated from Vasumati which means earth recognized by its fragrance. The full exposition of the word is from Hindi. Bas originating from Prakrit Vas which has a sanskrit root- Vasay connoting aroma; and mati from mayup meaning ingrained from the origin. Common usage has changed Vas to Bas while joining bas and mayup the latter changed to mati.. Thus the word Basmati originated.

Cotton, the traditional and important commercial crop has been in cultivation in India for more than five thousand years. Though synthetic / man-made fibre has made inroads, cotton deserves the prime position not only in India but also in the world. The Northern hemisphere accounts for more than 90% of the total world production. Whereas countries like China, US and India together account for 50% of the production in the world. In India, cotton farming provides livelihood for over 4 million farm families. Various allied activities like ginning, spinning, weaving, textile processing, garment manufacturing, marketing etc., provide employment to several million people.

Among fresh vegetables, onion, tomato and mushroom are reported to be highly export competitive. India ranks first in the world accounting for around 21 per cent of the world area, planted to onion. Globally, the country occupies the second position, after China, in onion production with a production share of around 14 per cent. Productivity of onion is low at around 11.4 metric ton/ha, which is significantly lower than the world average of 17.3 metric ton/ha. Besides India and China, the other major onion-producing countries are Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Japan, Brazil, United States of America and Spain. It is produced for both domestic consumption as well as exports. India produces all varieties of onion - pink, red, yellow and white, big or small.

Potato is a major food crop, grown in more than 100 countries in the world and it is one of the major commercial crops grown in India. India ranks third by contributing around 7.5% to the world’s production. During 2006-07, 27 million tonnes was produced in an area of about 1.5 million ha. However, potato consumption per capita in India (14.8 kg/head/year) is one of the lowest in the world and hardly one per cent of the potato is processed.

Pulses are important food crops due to their high protein and essential amino acid content. Pulses are used as food and animal feed. India is the world’s largest producer, importer and consumer of pulses. Many exporting countries are dependent on India for marketing their pulses. Even though India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses still there is a gap of 2-3 million tonnes between the production and consumption of pulses in the country and the gap is met through imports.

The first use of rubber was by the Olmecs, who centuries later passed on the knowledge of natural latex from the Hevea tree in 1600 BC to the ancient Mayans. They boiled the harvested latex to make a ball for a Mesoamerican ballgame.

Prices of major spices such as chillies, jeera, turmeric and cardamom are being driven to the ground by higher production, poor export earnings and a lack of working capital with traders to hold the stocks. Last December, all these spices were at record highs. With the prices ruling high last year, the acreage of most of the spices has increased this year, indicating excess production. The chilli acreage has increased by 15% to 20% while the land under jeera crop is estimated to have gone up by over 26%. The turmeric production is heading for a historic high of 82 lakh bags (each bag of 70 kg) and cardamom is having a bumper harvest.

Sugar originated from the Arabic word “sharkara” and is derived from the sanskrit world “sharkara”. Sugar is an important part of the daily diet and  forming a class of edible substances which includes  sucrose, lactose, and fructose. It provides the human body with requisite carbohydrates and is basically extracted from sugar cane and sugar beet.  Found in fruits, honey, sorghum, sugar maple and in several other sources, it is the main ingredient of candy which is loved by children the world over. Yet, it has been  blamed for causing tooth decay and excess consumption of sugar has been associated with a host of ailments like diabetes, obesity, weight gain, depression, joint pain, fatigue and insulin resistance and even cancer.

Random workplace surveys in the UK have proven that the staff can get pretty steamed up over hot drinks. Nine years ago, London Underground staff, in fact, threatened to go on strike when kettles were introduced to replace tea urns. Their grouse: it will make them late for shifts. When the credit crunch dried up the free watering holes in many companies, a survey by uSwitchforbusiness.com in 2010 claimed that trouble was brewing. It warned: "Cutting out the free cuppas may add to the bottom line, but there may be a far greater price to be paid in staff morale." Tea or coffee - free or not - is the preferred poison at work.

Fats and oils are one of the five essential ingredients of human diet. The four others are protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. In balanced diet, the requirement of oils and fats per person per day is around 35 gm. In India, the major source of oils and fats is of vegetable origin; butter from animal milk also serves as a fat, though. In the nine major oilseeds, which are groundnut, rapseed /mustered seed, soya been, seasam seeds, sun flower seed niger seed, castor seed and linseed, out of these   seven are essentially edible. Among these seven, by far the most important are groundnut,  rapeseed/mustard seed, and soya bean. These three edible oilseeds account for a little over 80% of-the-total production of nine oilseeds, which include even two non-edible oilseeds, namely castor seed and linseed. As a matter of fact, edible oilseeds as such contribute nearly 95% to the total production of all cultivated oilseeds together.

ABSTRACT

The chemical characteristics of the groundwater in and around the Valapadi taluk of Salem district have been studied to evaluate the suitability of water for domestic and irrigation uses. Twenty three groundwater samples representing the shallow and deep aquifer of the area were collected and analyzed for pH, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, K, HCO3, CO3, SO4 and Cl. It is observed that the quality of the groundwater is suitable for domestic use with some exception. The observed high quantity of Cl, SO4 and Mg at some places require immediate attention and detailed study. The value of EC and SAR indicate good to medium q of water for irrigation.

Primary cells are often preferred to established cell lines as they better represent the cells in vivo in terms of activity and functions. On the other hand, there is significant difference between original culture and present culture and even between cultures of the same cells in different laboratories. The rate of growth increases and there is change in chromosome numbers of lines over the time. The differences in phenotypes can cause problems in comparison and interpretation of results. The advantage of cell lines are ease handling, grow continuously, large yield and readily available. Primary cell cultures compared to established cell line are more fastidious in their growth requirements because many cell lines are derived from tumour tissue and demonstrate reduced growth factor requirements.

OVERVIEW OF PRIMARY TILLAGE EQUIPMENT
Primary tillage is the first and one of the most important steps in soil preparation for agriculture. It involves the mechanical disturbance of the soil to break it up, loosen it, and turn it over, creating optimal conditions for crop growth. The aim of primary tillage is to ready the soil for sowing by forming a seedbed, enhancing soil structure, managing weeds, incorporating crop residues, and improving water absorption. Loosening the soil also promotes aeration, which is crucial for root growth and microbial activity. The most common tools that are used for primary tillage are the mouldboard plough and the disc plough, each suited for different soil types and field conditions. These tools are designed to break and loosen the soil, ensuring proper root development and preparation for subsequent stages of cultivation.
The mouldboard plough, one of the oldest and most widely used primary tillage tools, includes several components such as a frame, shares (blades), mouldboards, landsides, and handles. The shares cut into the soil, while the mouldboards flip the soil over, creating furrows and burying crop residues. It is best for deep tillage in lighter, well-drained soils and is generally used in areas with low weed pressure. The depth and width of the cut can be adjusted to suit the soil type and crop requirements.
In contrast, the disc plough uses rotating discs to cut into the soil. Unlike the mouldboard plough, which fully turns the soil, the disc plough slices and fragments it into smaller pieces. This makes it particularly effective in dense, compacted, or rocky soils. Disc ploughs are ideal for regions with heavy, sticky soils or where crop residues are plentiful. Real-time PCR, also known as qPCR, is a highly sensitive technique used to determine the real-time amplification of a target DNA sequence. However, the presence of secondary structures or spurious amplicons can distort the results. When using SYBR Green chemistry, the features of qPCR primers differ from those of standard endpoint PCR primers. As a result, designing primers for SYBR Green qPCR requires extra caution and attention. This chapter outlines the essential features and conditions for designing qPCR primers, including primer length, melting temperature, GC content, specificity, and avoiding primer-dimer formation.

Abstract

It is essential that care is taken in the design of primers for PCR. Several parameters including the length of the primer, percentage of GC content and the 3' sequence need to be optimized for successful  PCR. Some of these parameters can be easily manually optimized while others are best done with commercial computer programs. In any event, careful observance of the general rules of primer designing will help ensure successful experiments.

Abstract

PCR primer design is a crucial skill for molecular biologists, as it enables the study of gene expression, gene amplification, and molecular markers. Primer3 is an online tool widely used for designing optimal PCR primers, which are pairs of short oligonucleotides that initiate DNA synthesis in vitro using a thermocycler. This tool uses a range of parameters to generate high- quality primers, including target sequence length, melting temperature, GC content, specificity, and product size. Understanding and effectively utilizing these parameters is essential for achieving accurate and reliable PCR results. In this chapter, the practical aspect of primer designing using the online tool Primer3 has been discussed. The parameters and the purpose of their usage have been given in a tabulated manner.

Primrose family is represented by about 58 genera and 2,600 species which are cosmopolitan but chiefly distributed in northern hemisphere. Some of the
larger genera with their approximately reported species include Primula (500), Lysimachia (200), Dodecatheon (50), Dionysia (41), Anagallis (30), Cyclamen (15), Salomus and Soldanella (11).

Economic Importance
The family is of no specific economic importance except that of some well known decorative plants it contains. Some species of Primula may cause contact dermatitis. Anagallis arvensis is used for curing snakebite, leprosy, gout and even hydrophobia. Cyclamen purpurascence contains glucoside cyclamen which is poisonous. Some of the commonly cultivated ornamental plants of Primulaceae are the species of Primula (primrose), Androsace (rock jasmine), Cyclamen (Fig. 46.1), Dodecatheon (shooting star), Douglasia, Lysimachia (Loosestrile) and Omphalogramma.

In Doppler imaging, the reflections are from circulatory vessels, while in 2D ultrasonic image the reflection is from a tissue(s) or organ(s) In 2D ultrasound strength of reflection in B-mode depends upon density of the organ.On other hand the reflection in Doppler imaging depends upon direction of the circulation. If circulaltion is coming towards transducer, the signal will be strong, while it looses its strength while flowing away from the transducer. As shown in the diagram, the position of transducer on curved surface decides the strength or amplitude of signal. If it is positioned on curve end from where circulation is coming, the signal will be of higher amplitude, but when position is changed to other end of curved surface, where circulation is going down the amplitude of signal will decrease accordingly and is shown in reverse direction.

Principle of Doppler

Movement of blood in vessels is detected, which is depicted by color in some ultrasound machines. The flow coming towards transducer is shown above baseline, while flow going down i.e. away from transducer is shown below baseline. If position of transducer is changed from where the arterial flow is going away from transducer then, the arterial flow will be shown below baseline and venous flow that is coming towards transducer will be shown above baseline. Some machine shows red and blue color of the flow. The red color shows flow coming towards and blue color shows flow going away from transcer. A beginner ultrasonographer may think that the red color is from artery and blue is from vein. This is not true, this shows direction of flow. Since ultrasonic image of flow in Doppler is formed from series of pulses returning from vessels, the magnitude of pulse changes with variation in flow. A stationary flow will not show any height of magnitude.

Principles of Over Head Projector (OHP)
A projector, which projects the image over the head of an instructor on the screen, is called OHP. It worked on the principle of indirect projection. With the use of lens of short focal length and two mirrors the picture is reflected on the screen. The drawing, diagram, letter (may be in colour or in black and white) etc. are made on transparent sheet and are put on the glass platform of the OHP, through which strong light is passed. The rays of light are converged by a lens and reflected by a mirror held at an angle of 45°.

So far we studied direct stress (Tensile or compressive) and tangential stress (shear stress) acting on plane individually. But in many engineering problems these both stresses are acts on a plane at a same time. In such cases resultant stress on that plane will be neither pure normal nor purely shear but there will be combined effect of normal and shear stress.

In addition, genome-edited fish, such as the CRISPR-Cas9 modified tiger puffer and red sea bream, have been approved in Japan, further showcasing the advancements in gene-editing technologies for improving aquaculture species. Food processing units range from home-based businesses to large-scale processing plants. The food processing sector is a highly fragmented industry which includes fruit, vegetables, dried, preserved, canned, pulps, pickles, chutneys, milk, dairy products, ready-to-serve products, frozen desserts, meat, poultry, marine products, grain processing, beer and alcoholic beverages, consumer, convenience and packaged food, soft drinks etc.

The main objective of fruit and vegetable processing is to supply wholesome, safe, nutritious and acceptable food to consumer throughout the year. Fruit and vegetable processing also aim to replace import of products such as squashes, jams, tomato sauces, pickles, etc., besides earning foreign exchange by exporting finished or semi-processed products. The fruit and vegetable processing industries are also established in the developing countries due to following reasons:

• Reduction in fruits and vegetables post harvest losses

• Industrialization policy of the government

• Generate both rural and urban employment

• Improve farmer s nutrition by self consumption of processed fruits and vegetables during off season

Introduction
Food preservation refers to an art or science which deals with the process of prevention of decay, deterioration or spoilage of food commodity to allow it to be stored in a safe condition for future use. All foods gradually undergo deterioration or spoilage from the time immediately they are harvested or manufactured. Some commodities spoil rapidly, while others can keep longer but for limited periods. The basic purposes of food preservation are:
1. Extension of shelf life of foods thus increasing the supply
2. Ensuring the availability of seasonal foods throughout the year
3. Adding variety to the diet
4. Saving time by reducing preparation time and energy
5. Stabilizing farm prices and prices of food
6. Improving the nutritional qualities The food spoilage can be caused due to growth and activity of micro-organisms, insects or rodents, action of enzymes, chemical reactions and physical changes that takes place during processing, drying, or freezing etc. Classification of Food Depending upon the type of spoilage and level of perishability, the foods are classified into three broad categories:

1. PLANT DOMESTICATION AND INTRODUCTION

Domestication is the process of bringing wild species under human management. Under domestciation, the crop species have changed considerably as compared to the wild species from which they originated.

Preservation means just protect the foods against the spoilage, but scientifically it may be defined as a science which deals with the process for prevention of decay or spoilage of the food is called preservation.

In other words, just controlling the physical, chemical or microbial changes in the foods is called preservation.

Physical Changes: Colour, flavour, texture and taste etc.

Chemical Changes: Carbohydrate, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

Microbial Changes: Mould, yeasts and bacteria

• Sterilization temperature at above 100°C

• Heat treatment kills part, but not all microorganisms present and temperature below 100°C.

Concept: Reduction of seed moisture content to the acceptable levels for enhancement of storability and longevity is known as seed drying.

The moisture content of seed is negatively related to its storability. As the moisture content of seed increases, its storability decreases. Adequate drying of seed prolongs viability for reasonably long periods without cold storage. The process of drying begins with physiological maturity till storage/packaging of seeds to avoid deterioration. The seed is hygroscopic in nature therefore it adjusts its moisture content in equilibrium to the existing environment.

Seed Drying

Seed drying is the process in which an environment with low humidity is created to remove moisture from the seed up to the desired level without any damage to its viability and physical appearance. This seed is stored at low moisture content under the low relative humidity to enhance its longevity. The initiation of seed moisture content and the desired level are what dictate the amount of the drying process, and these elements are determined by the following

• Type of seed: This will consider the longevity behaviour, seed content, and seed structure (i.e., how well the species stores energy).

Objective

Vegetable seed separation requires specialized training. A little carelessness during the seed extraction process can seriously harm the plant’s viability and vigor in addition to its outward look. Inadequate extraction methods can also result in in-situ germination. The seed can be separated by the following methods.

1. Manual Method

(a) Maceration e.g., watermelon,

(b) Crushing e.g., brinjal,

(c) Scraping e.g., cucumber

(d) Separated e.g., muskmelon,

(e) Scooping e.g., pumpkins and

(f) Extraction e.g., squashes.

Absorption and Emission

Absorption techniques – It measures the absorption of abundance of light due to electrons going to a higher energy level.

Emission techniques - It measures the intensity of light that is emitted as electrons return to the lower energy levels.

Chromatography is the set of laboratory techniques used for the separation of molecular mixtures by developing chromatograms. Chromatogram is a collection of different bands on the chromatographic column. The mixture is dissolved in a fluid called the “mobile phase”, which carries with it another material called the “stationary phase”. The various constituents of the mixture travel at different speeds, causing them to separate. Chroma (colour) and graph in (to write) contribute to the word chromatography, as coined by Mikhail Tswett (1903). Solute moves only when it is in stationary phase. In chromatography, the mobile phase flowing into the column is called eluent, the solution emerging from the column is elute, and the process by which solutes moves and separate is called elution.

This method employs the differences in absorbability of components of mixtures and the differences in the mobility rate. The molecules of a substance which interact strongly with the fixed phase will move slowly through the column whereas substances which do not interact strongly are carried through more rapidly. It is used to separate different substances having similar chemical properties.

Colorimetry is the quantitative analysis of a coloured constituent. It is determined by measuring the relative amount of absorption of light passing through a solution of a constituent.

When a monochromatic light is passed through a homogeneous medium, a part of the incident light is absorbed and part of the light is reflected and part could be transmitted. This can be mathematically expressed as

Various aspects of micorbial plant pathogens have been studied with the ultimate aim of gathering information that may be useful for development of effective disease management systems. Principles of management of crop diseases caused by microbial pathogens fall into three categories : exclusion, eradication and immunization.

7.1 Exclusion of Microbial Plant Pathogens

Exclusion of microbial pathogens may be expected to reduce the amount or efficacy of the initial population of pathogens that may be introduced into a geographical location / field. Exclusion is an important component of management of diseases, if the initial population of pathogen is large. This approach is particularly effective in the case of monocyclic pathogens that complete their life cycle only once during one cropping season. The methods with the aim of excluding the introduction of pathogens or to prevent the build up of inoculum required for disease spread are generally applied elsewhere. Hence, they have lower level of visibility compared to other approaches. Introduction of new pathogens present in plant and plant materials into another country or locations within a country may be effectively prevented by establishing plant quarantines. Build up of inoculum of microbial pathogens can be reduced considerably by the use of disease-free plants or planting materials supplied through certification agencies. These regulatory programmes have to be manned by trained technical personnel and supported by adequate infrastructure in terms of equipments and mobility (Chapter 8).

Introduction

Today, increasing attention is focused upon the impact farming practices, are having on the environment and there is an increasing emphasis on more sustainable methods of crop production. Systems need to be adopted that are more sensitive to environmental issues, genetic diversity, wildlife and their habitats and in some cases the social structures of rural communities. Furthermore, consumers around the world are more sophisticated and critical than in the past, demanding to know how and what has been used to produce their agriculturally derived products. These issues can be taken up as three main challenges: 1) to improve food security, rural livelihoods and income; 2) to satisfy the increasing and diversified demands for safe food and other products; and, 3) to conserve and protect natural resources. Several scientific advancements have been made in the field of agriculture to address these challenges.

Potentiometry is based on measurement of potential of an electrode system

Principle

When a metal electrode is immersed in a solution containing its own ions, the metal atom pass into the solution in the form of metal ions and a potential difference is established between the metal and the solution. This potential is called as electrode potential.

Potential on an electrode depends on the ions present in solution and their concentration which can be determined by using electrochemical cells and expressed by Nernst equation

Objectives of Seed Grading

Minimization of heterogeneity to the lowest level and enhancement of the homogeneity to the highest level in the seed lots received by the processing unit.

Principle

Separation of seed lots based on differences in the physical properties of the seeds.

Post harvest activities include threshing/ seed extraction, drying, pre-cleaning and conditioning, cleaning, fine-cleaning or grading, seed treatment, weighing and bagging/ packaging, sealing and labelling, storing, and transportation for marketing. Except for transportation and marketing, all these activities collectively known as seed processing. However, for most of the crop, threshing or seed extraction, basic cleaning even drying is done in the farm itself and in the processing unit, the threshed seed is received.

The objective of the seed processing is to prepare the harvested seed in such a way that seed of highest purity and quality would be available for marketing, also for planting. The cleaning and the grading are the foremost activity of the seed processing. The seed, which is received in the processing unit, contains many undesirable particles, which as such cannot be used for marketing, hence cleaning and grading become necessary.

1. Seedling management in the nursery

Seedlings of many seed propagated vegetable crops like, tomato, brinjal, chillies, sweet pepper, cauliflower, cabbage, knolkhol, broccoli, Brussels sprout, kale, endive, chicory, celery, lettuce, parsley, onion, etc. are first raised in the nursery beds before transplanted in the main field although, many of these crops like, tomato, sweet pepper, onion, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. are also direct seeded using precision seed drills in the USA, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy and other European countries. Many seed propagated vegetable crops viz., okra, peas, beans, radish, carrot, beet, turnip and all the cucurbits (e.g. bitter gourd, bottle gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, snake gourd, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, etc.) are conventionally grown through direct seeding in the main field.

Transplant groups

1. Plants easy to transplant: They form new roots rapidly, put forth shoots rather slowly and absorb water readily e.g. beet, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Swiss chard, lettuce and tomato.

2. Plants transplanted with moderate ease: This group replace roots and grow shoots a bit slower than the previous group and do not absorb water very efficiently e.g. celery, brinjal, onion, pepper, leek and cauliflower.

The techniques used in disease management mainly based on two principles,: Prevention or prophylaxis and cureThe first principle prevention includes disease management tactics applied before infection i.e., the plant is protected from disease. It includes: avoidance, exclusion, eradication, resistant&protection. Second principle curative action: functions with any measure applied after the plant is infectedi.e., the plant is treated for the disease.It includes therapy.

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the clinician to look within a hollow organ or body cavity and obtain diagnostic information, which includes grossly evaluating an area of interest and obtaining tissue for histopathologic evaluation. Endoscopy is also used for therapeutic purpose and termed as interventional endoscopy. Endoscope An endoscope is basically consists of an insertion tube, hand piece and umbilical cord, Insertion tube -Encases the mechanism for image transmission. It consists of fiberoptic glass bundles (fiber-scope) or charge coupled device (CCD) chip (video endoscope), biopsy/suction channel, irrigation/insufflation channel and deflection control cables. Handpiece – It includes deflection control knobs,accessory channel entrance, irrigation/insufflation and suction valves.

Endoscopy provides direct visualization of internal structures and is valuable for diagnosing mucosal and luminal disease. This chapter describes the principles, equipment and applications of endoscopy in veterinary patients. Gastrointestinal endoscopy allows examination of the esophagus, stomach and proximal small intestine and can facilitate tissue or fluid sampling and selected therapeutic procedures. Appropriate patient preparation and preliminary investigations, including history, physical examination, radiography and ultrasonography, are emphasized. Endoscopy is particularly useful for detecting mucosal lesions, foreign bodies, ulceration, inflammation and other gastrointestinal abnormalities. The chapter also introduces other endoscopic applications, including laparoscopic examination.
