INTRODUCTION

Rabbit production is the upcoming livestock farming throughout the world. The domestic rabbit are raised meat, fur –skins and wool. Climatic condition of Karnataka are not favourable for raising wool breeds of rabbits, but are definitely well for broiler rabbit production.

Rabbits require less space for housing and highly prolific. Initial investment for rabbits farming is very less and maintenance cost is also very low. There is no religious barriers in rabbit meet consumption and rabbit meat contains very low cholesterol when compared to the other meats.

Rabbit farming can be very well fit into mixed farming systems. It can be adopted by small and marginal for maximum utilization of lands and resources, and to derive substantial income under rural condition.

Project Report

A project report is a written document associated with every investment. It includes the details upon which the project was evaluated and deemed viable. It encompasses information regarding economic, technical, financial, management, and production elements. It assists the entrepreneur in understanding the interests and aids in securing loans from banks or financial institutions.

The project report provides comprehensive details on the necessary land and buildings, yearly production capacity, production methodology, machinery and equipment along with their costs and technical specifications, raw material needs, electricity and water requirements, labor needs, market costs of the project, production, financial analyses, and the financial viability of the project.

Contents of a Project Report

1. General Information: The project report needs to incorporate details regarding the industry relevant to the project. It ought to present information about the industry’s historical background, present condition, challenges, and future outlook. It must include details about the product to be created and the rationale behind the product selection if the proposed organization is a manufacturing entity. It should indicate the demand for the product in local, national, and international markets. It should distinctly outline the business opportunities and provide explanations for initiating the business.

It is not possible that every respondent is willing to and capable of giving honest and true response. Sometimes, it is practically not possible to make the respondent reveal about personal information, but true research requires true response. When direct stimuli fail to elicit true response, then we must use indirect and extractive methods to elicit the required response indirectly from the respondents, which further can be interpreted in the relevant format. This indirect and ambiguous stimulus based methods are known as projective methods. Projective methods are technique of data collection on the person, value, attitude, emotions and motives etc. by using a highly unstructured and ambiguous stimulus (Wilkening, Wilkening & Wilkening, 1973).

PROKARYOTES

Prokaryotic organisms are that in which nucleus is primitive type and nuclear material is not enclosed within the nuclear membrane.

Bacteria are placed in the kingdom “Prokaryotae” because of the prokaryotic cellular organization of the members. However, extremely diverse groups of microorganisms differing in morphological, physiological and ecological properties are found within this kingdom. In the beginning, description and information of bacterial systematics or classification was being published in the comprehensive volumes of “Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology” (1923, first edition). The 9th edition of Bergey’s Manual, published in 1984 was the last of such comprehensive manual and from 1984 onwards it was renamed as “Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology”. It is the most widely accepted and used reference document or book for classification and identification of bacteria. In the 9th edition, the kingdom Prokaryota (Monera) is divided into 4 divisons based on nature of the cell wall.These are : Gracilicultes; Firmicutes; Tenericutes and Mendosicutes .

Prokinetic drugs are used to stimulate gastrointestinal motility, including the abomasum, in animals like cattle, especially in cases of abomasal disorders such as displaced abomasum or atony. Below are commonly used prokinetic drugs and their doses:
1. Metoclopramide
Mechanism: Dopamine antagonist; enhances gastric emptying andincreases motility. Dose
Cattle: 0.1–0.3 mg/kg subcutaneously or intravenously every 8–12,hours.
Horses: 0.04–0.08 mg/kg intravenously as a constant rate infusion
(CRI).
2. Erythromycin (Macrolide antibiotic with prokinetic activity)
Mechanism: Mimics motilin, stimulating smooth muscle contractions. Dose
Cattle: 8.6–10 mg/kg orally every 8–12 hours.
Horses: 0.5–1 mg/kg intravenously every 6–8 hours.
3. Neostigmine
Mechanism: Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor; increases acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions.

Migration is a worldwide occurrence that can be attributed to various factors such as disparities in economic development, regional differences, and varying living standards among socio-economic groups. It is driven by both push and pull factors. Pull factors include opportunities for better employment and higher wages, while push factors encompass the lack of job prospects in underdeveloped areas, droughts, and scarcity conditions. Unlike the biological factors of mortality and fertility, which operate within a biological framework, migration is influenced by the desires of individuals. Although most migratory movements are intentional, there may be exceptional cases where this is not true. Therefore, migration is a response by individuals to economic, social, political, and demographic forces in their environment and serves as an important indicator of social change in society.

As globalization evolves, including free trade liberalization and the expansion of rural agribusiness, smallholders face challenges in adapting to the changing market economy. Population growth and land inheritance laws have led to the subdivision and fragmentation of farmland. In countries like India, smallholders risk marginalization as larger agricultural enterprises increasingly dominate profitable agribusiness.
Recent global trends emphasize environmentally sound practices-balancing ecological and economic concerns and sustainability, which integrates social, environmental and long-term economic considerations. These principles, along with health and environmental regulations, are driving the expansion of contractual farming relationships (Rehber, 2019). Globalisation and market liberalisation in developing countries have transformed agricultural markets, creating new opportunities for high-value products (Wigboldus, 2018). Consequently, migration to urban areas is widespread. According to the Periodic Labour Survey Report (July 2020 - June 2021), the primary reasons for male labour migration are “search for employment or better employment (22.8%)” and “to take up offered employment opportunities or be close to their workplace (20.1%)”. Efforts to curb this migration focus on promoting income-generating activities for smallholders. However, these initiatives have largely failed due to a lack of market linkages-both backward and forwardand reliable, cost-effective inputs, such as extension services, mechanization, quality seeds, fertilizers, credit and access to profitable markets. Evidence suggests that well-organized contract farming can establish such linkages, offering smallholders an affordable pathway to operate commercially. Notably, contract farming can ensure a dependable supply of agricultural products, both in quality and quantity.
Since its inception, contract farming has demonstrated its potential to support smallholder farmers. Historical evidence shows the opportunities of contract farming from ancient Greece, China and to modern United States. The foundation of such arrangements in different countries is a commitment by smallholder farmers to provide a specific community with certain quantity and quality standards set by the purchaser and a commitment by the company to

Abstract
North East Region of India is gifted with rich natural resources. The region is home for many flora and fauna. The abundant natural resources and rich culture of the states in the region has potential to promote varied Entrepreneurial ventures. Despite the difference in culture and dialects, the eight states stay together as one with love and peace. For this, the region is also known as “The land of Seven Sisters and One Brother”. Even though the region is gifted with abundant natural resources, the people are not still able to reap the potential benefits of it. The region faced low production, poor infrastructure & connectivity and unemployment which threaten the young generations of the region. Entrepreneurial start-ups in
 agricultural ventures is the suitable promising way to solve these problems so as to harness its potential benefits and to bring development in the livelihood of its people of the region.

ABSTRACT

Punjab is the richest state in the country in term of per capita income and has earned the name as food bowl of the country by putting 84-85 per cent of its geographical area under highly intensive, technical and mechanical agriculture with cropping intensity as high as 185 per cent and contributing more than one third of rice and half of its wheat production to the central pool of food reserve. The food grain production in the state has increased approximately twelve times in a span of about 50 years after independence from 20 lac tones in 1950-51 to 234.89 lakh tonnes in 2002-2003. Achieving this high productivity without caring for natural resources has resulted in a considerable loss in the inherent production potential and deterioration of soil health. As a result, man is getting serious warning signals in the form of lowering of water table, drought, high rate of environmental pollution, extremes of climatic parameters, etc. Agriculture in the state has become too intensive, wasteful and reckless and the radical changes are required to maintain the balance. Therefore, there is a strong thinking to diversify farming in the state to maintain the sustainability of the whole system. The state government is stressing hard to save the natural resources through the diversification in traditional crop rotation and adopt resource-conserving measures.

Barleria L. (Acanthaceae) is a pantropical genus of herbs and shrubs comprising about 300 species, occurring mainly in Africa and Asia. In India, the genus is represented by about 32 species of which 24 are endemic to India.  About 80 % of the species are found in Peninsular India. Many species of Barleria are of ornamental value and can be grown for their foliage and showy colorful flowers. There are certain indigenous species which show good growth performance in cultivation and have economic importance as ornamentals. Moreover, some species fall under IUCN categories of threatened plants which need immediate attention for their conservation. Considering the horticultural importance especially in landscape gardening and rarity of Barlerias, various species found in India are collected and cultivated through various methods in the Botanical Garden of Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

Livestock sector plays a vital role in the welfare of India’s rural population by acting as an important source of income and employment in the rural sector (Dastagiri, 2004). India possesses the largest livestock population in the world and ranks first with (520.6 million), and accounts for the largest number of cattle (world share 16.1%), buffaloes (57.9%), second largest number of goats (16.7%) and third highest number of sheep (5.7%) in the world (FAOSTAT) and sustaining all these in less than 5% of world’s and one-third of Asia’s agricultural land area (MOA, 2003).

1. Introduction

Poultry industry in India stands out as a major success story. It’s phenomenal that India’s poultry production whichstarted justas a backyard venture before 1960s, has shaped up into a proven agribusiness, where its annual turnover exceeds Rs 30,000 crores. Current global ranking of India is that of number three, in terms of egg production (behind China [1st] and USA [2nd]), and of18th position in Broiler production. Today, Poultry is one of the fastest growing industries of the agricultural sector in India at present. The annual growth of broilers and egg production is 8-10% compared to 1-2% for production of agricultural crops [3].

Poultry production forms an important Agrarian Avenue providing valuable animal proteins for the fast-growing human population of the developing India, with promises of additional income to small and marginal farmers.Rural and backyard poultry farming is very common among landless and marginal farmer families in India and is a rewarding source of additional income. It involves low investment with high returns which can be easily operated by women, children and elder members of the farm families. Poor households generate good income through backyard poultry farming which provides meat and egg rich in protein and energy. Agriculture including animal husbandry provides 30-40% employment in terms of man/woman days in a year. Scarcity of land holdings, land fragmentation and seasonal agriculture aresome of the reasons that crop production only is unable to provide cent percent employment to the rural youths (men and women).

Promotion Mix

The main objectives of promotion mix are to seek buyer’s attention towards the product with a view to : (1) arouse consumer interest in the product (2) inform consumer about the product availability (3) inform the consumer as how is it different from others.

Abstract
The global population is projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, with rural youth (aged 15–34) in developing countries of Africa and Asia facing significant challenges like unemployment, poverty, and limited access to resources such as land, credit, and education. Despite agriculture's potential to provide livelihoods and contribute to 32% of global employment, rural youth are increasingly disengaged, perceiving farming as unattractive due to its image of drudgery and lack of profitability. Agri-preneurship, blending agriculture with entrepreneurial skills, offers a solution by fostering innovative, profitable farm businesses. Initiatives like India’s ARYA program and private efforts such as the Green Shoots Foundation promote skill development, encouraging youth to pursue agriculture through training, microfinance, and market linkages. Empowering rural youth with entrepreneurial competencies can enhance food security, reduce rural outmigration, and support sustainable development.

Pest and pathogen incidence is a natural occurrence that frequently goes unreported. However, they become a concern when their spectra expand and cause significant losses. Chemical pesticides are now commonly used in agricultural techniques to lessen the impact of such severe damages. Without a question, the use of chemical pesticides has put human health, ecological health, and sustainability at danger.

In recent years, rainfall pattern is changing and the sustainability of irrigated rice ecosystem is threatened by water crisis. Tanks are often not filling or partially filling due to insufficient rains. In order to safeguard the food security, it is necessary to preserve previous water resources and to utilize the limited water most efficiently. In this regard alternate ways of growing rice using minimum water must be explored. Farmers are adamant to grow paddy crop to meet their domestic needs of food and fodder. In such situation Jalasri method can became one of the alternative for paddy cultivation. The Jalasri method is an appropriate system aimed at reducing the cost of cultivation, saving irrigation water, besides increasing grain yield significantly. Earlier Jalasri method was popular as Madagascar method of paddy cultivation.

3.1. Approaches for Promotion Entrepreneurship Programmes in Nigeria

This book used the following typology of approaches:

1. Start: Stimulating local business start-ups that enter into new local markets, there - by avoiding the trap of yet another ‘me-too’ enterprise with low revenues. Promote business start-ups as a way of creating additional jobs and incomes, and promoting competition and structural change. However, these startups often lack innovative business ideas. Instead they enter sectors with a low entry threshold, but with high competition from other companies. Stimulating local start-ups that apply IB models could encourage players to enter new markets that are not yet saturated with competitors, while at the same time serving development goals. Possible target groups for this approach include university students, NGOs or experienced business people who create a spin-off company or leave their company to engage in a totally new business. In a country or sector where IB models are still rare, the first questions that arise are why this is the case, and whether potential markets exist for the use of IB models. Questions to ask include

Facilities required for propagating many plant species by seed, cuttings, or grafting and budding include two basic units namely a structure with temperature control and ample light such as a greenhouse or hot bed where seeds can be germinated or cuttings rooted. The second unit is a structure into which the young tender plants can be moved for hardening preparatory to transplanting and cold frames or lath houses are useful for this purpose.Greenhouses: There are different types of greenhouse namely low cost greenhouse and commercial greenhouses. In all polyhouses/ greenhouses means of providing air movement and air exchange is necessary to aid in controlling temperature and humidity It is best, if possible, to have in the greenhouse heating and self-opening ventilators and evaporative cooling systems. Plastic greenhouses covered with various types of plastic film have become very popular among nursery men.

Cashew being a highly cross pollinated crop, planting of seedling is not recommended. In the past seed propagation was in vogue, which has resulted into large variation in plants due to highly heterozygous nature. However, it is seldom practiced now-a-days except to raise the rootstock materials. Selection of seed is very important for raising rootstock material. Seed nuts which are heavy and sink in water should be selected for raising seedling. Seed nuts should be collected from high yielding trees. Seed nuts collected from the current season’s crop during March, April and May are the best for seed production as they have been found to give high percentage of seed germination. Studies conducted to investigate the time taken and germination percentage revealed that heavy nuts (sunken in water) gave 92 per cent germination on 14-17 days, whereas floating nuts took 14-22 days and gave 64 per cent germination (Krishnamurthy et al., 1985).

Sexual Propagation in Pineapple

Pineapple occupy a gametophytic self-incompatibility system so that commercial cultivated pineapple rarely produces very few seeds in the field (Coppens d’Eeckenbrugge et al. 1992). However, if two varieties are grown close together and flowering time is same, it is chance for insect-aided crosspollination to set seeds. The vectors for natural cross-pollination vary with the location. Where humming birds are present, they are likely to be a primary pollinator. Where these birds are absent, honeybees and ants would be the main pollinators. The small corolla tube and the fact that pollen is not shed rule out wind as a pollinator. Since seedy fruit is not acceptable for either fresh or processing, it is rare to find more than one cultivar on large plantations. If more than one cultivaris grown in a farm, spatial separation and careful management of time of forcing will prevent seed production. However, cross-pollination between cultivars is used by pineapple breeders to generate new hybrids like “MD-2” and “CO-2” (Williams and Fleisch 1993). Sexual propagation is important for the generation of new varieties and is successfully used in pineapple breeding programs (Reinhardt et al., 2018). Pineapple Seeds are placed in shallow trays on moistened sand beds under controlled environmental conditions for germination(Junghans et al., 2015).Seed germination come up mostly from two weeks after sowing and rates are high, usually 80% or more (Chang et al., 2003). The new growing seedlings have 6 to 8 leaves stage within about three months after sowing and are then transplanted to pots with agricultural substrate and are grown under greenhouse or screen house conditions. After an additional 9 to 15 months of growth stage, during which the seedlings height reach 25 cm, which is considered adequate for planting in the field, the plants are finally acclimatized in an open nursery.

i. SHIELD OR ‘T BUDDING

Materials and equipments- Budding knife, tying material and petridis.

Procedure

Operations on the stock- Select healthy, uniform stock plants of about a lead pencil thickeness and about one to one and half years of age. Remove the thorns (if any) and side branches up to a height of 20 to 25 cm from the soil surface. Select a spot at height of about 15 to 20 cm from the soil surface in between two internodes, which is smooth, other than the southern aspect. With the help of a sharp knife make a horizontal cut of about 1.25 to 1.80 cm in length, deep enough to cut bark only. Starting from the centre of the horizontal cut make a vertical cut, deep enough to cut the bark only of about 2.5 to 3.5 cm long making the shape of english letter ’T’. Open the flaps with the help of knife blade or the back of the budding knife.

Purpose-Multiplication of plants by cutting includes stem, root and leaf cuttings. The stem cuttings are of four different types i.e. hard, semi hard, soft wood and herbaceous wood cutting consist in producing new individuals after the piece of stem has been detached from the mother plant and planted in conditions suitable for regeneration to the missing organs. Stem cutting have to develop a new root system as they already have buds to give rise to shoots. Many cells of the cutting are capable of becoming meristematic and thus are able to produce new roots. The success in the stem cutting multiplication depends upon factors such as condition of the mother plants, part of the tree from where the cuttings are made, time of the year, care while planting and after care. Cuttings can be made during monsoon (July-Sept.) and spring (Feb. -March) season when active cell division is taking place.

Purpose-The term ‘Grafting’ includes all forms of grafting and budding. It is the art of joining the part of together in such a manner that they will unite and continue their growth as one plant. A grafted plant consist of two parts a rootstock, also known as understock or stock, and a scion. The part of the graft combination which is to become the upper portion or top and performs the function of flowers production and fruits is known as scion and the part which is lower portion or root which performs the function of fixing itself in the soil, absorbs moisture and nutrient from the soil is known as rootstock.

When the scion part is a small piece of bark containing only one bud the operation is termed as budding, but when the scion part is a branch containing more than one bud, the operation is termed as grafting.

Purpose: Layering includes several forms of ground and aerial layering (goottie). When rooting is encouraged on the aerial part of a plant after wounding it is known as air layering or goottie or morcottage. When branches running parallel to ground are utilized, then the method is known as ground layering. Layering is the development of root on a stem while it is still attached to the mother plant. The root formation on the stem is stimulated by removing a ring of bark or by making a notch which cause an interruption in the downward movement of carbohydrates and auxins from the leaves and growing shoot tips. The materials accumulate near the points of treatment and helps in rooting. Root formation depends upon continuous moisture supply, good aeration and moderate temperature around the rooting zone. For the same reason the best result are obtained by these methods during monsoon month (July-Sept.) and spring (Feb. -March) from branches 1 to 2 years of age.

Veneer grafting

It has one striking advantage in using the detached scion sticks for propagation, i.e. the shoot of the mother plant which is to be multiplied can be cut away from the mother plant and taken to the seedling growing in the nursery for grafting. Proper selection of scion is very important for the success of this method. The scion stick ought to be 3 to 4 months old and with some activated bud, either auxiliary or terminal. This is secured by defoliating the scion shoot about a week before the actual operation

This method can be practiced on seedling stocks grown in pots or nursery beds. A slanting cut about 5cm long on one side of scion stock, is given and the bark along with wood is removed, giving an oblique cut. Now a slanting cut on one side of the scion is made, which will just fit with the notch of the stock. The scion is then placed in position in such a way that the cambium rings of both stock and scion come in close contact. It is then wrapped tightly with 1.5cm wide tape of 200-300 gauge alkathene film keeping the terminal ends free. When the scion begins to grow at the top, (after about 3 weeks) the upper part of the stock is removed, thus forcing the buds to grow more rapidly. The plastic wrap is removed after 2-3 months.

The success is more or less the same in the entire scion (2.5 to 10.50 cm in length) but the growth of scion is always more when bigger scions are used.

Media for plant growth and seed germination has great significance in nursery business. It is the basic need of the propagation industry. The material for rooting and growing media may be used either alone or incorporated with one or more products in combination. The materials used for rooting media may be naturally occurring or may be manufactured artificially.

Characteristics of an ideal rooting medium: These are as follows.

1. The medium must be sufficiently firm and dense to hold the cuttings or seeds in place during rooting or germination.
2. It must retain sufficient water and air, allowing sufficient drainage.
3. It should be highly decomposed and stable.
4. It must be free from weed seeds, insect pests and diseases.
5. Acidity or alkalinity should be the optimum for different species.
6. Its volume must be fairly constant, when either wet or dry.
7. It must be capable of being sterilized.

Introduction

Multiplication of plants is termed as propagation. Nowadays, propagation practice has been totally modernized. Propagation practices have advanced from field to in-vitro. Starting from scion stick of 15 to 20 cm length, the plants are multiplied even using cell, tissue and embryo. In modern horticulture trade, plant propagation is a soaring business. It is highly profitable, employment generative, recreative and creative business.

Several improvements have been noticed over the period of time in the basic techniques of plant propagation, using either conventional or tissue culture approaches. The propagation under protected environment by creating artificial conditions such as light, temperature and humidity under controlled irrigation through drip irrigation and fertigation has enhanced the potential of plant propagation and has made it possible to propagate the plants around the year.

Abstract

Propagation in vitro using shoot tips / axillary buds has been applied successfully for production of  clonal apple rootstock  Malling 7 of EMLA series. For surface sterilization, HgCl₂ was found to be a good disinfectant as compared to sodium hypochlorite. Shoot tips were established best in MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/l  BA, 0.5 mg/l GA₃ and  0.1 mg/l IBA. Antioxidants were added to overcome phenol exudation. Shoot multiplication was influenced by cytokinin type and concentration. Of the cytokinins tested, BA (0.5 mg/l) was found superior to kinetin. Addition of phloroglucinol improved multiplication rate and shoot growth. Among the auxins tested, IBA was found better and roots were readily induced with 1 mg/l IBA. 90-95 per cent plantlets were established successfully in peat containing pots as well as in the field.

The propagation of plants has been one of the fundamental occupations of mankind since civilization begins. Most of the selected plant would have lost or could have attained undesirable forms if they were not propagated under strict environment conditions. Growth, in all nature, result from the division of cells to form more similar cells. Thus bacteria reproduce by simple division, in higher plants and animals, a new individual is genetically formed only when cell division fallows the fusion of two cells. The woody perennial shrubs have been the integral part of the traditional agro forestry system in arid region since ancient times. Inhabitants of the region rely on these species for food, fodder, fuel wood and other day-today requirements since long. Among woody perennials arid shrubs also have a major role in stabilization of drifting sands in the arid ecosystem. Out of about 682 species of Indian arid Zone (Bhandari, 1990), shrubs constitute 70% of the total flora in the Indian desert, yet they cover over 70-80% of desert landscape. Thus shrubs are less in variety, they are ecologically more successful biotypes in the desert environment.

The propagation of plants has been a fundamental occupation of mankind since civilization begins. Agriculture started some 10,000 years back when ancient people learned plants and grow kind of plants that fulfilled nutritional needs for themselves and their animals (Hartman et al., 1981). As civilization advanced, people added to the variety of plants cultivating not only for additional food crops but also those that provided fibres, medicine, recreational opportunities and beauty. From the great diversity and variation in plant life, it has been possible to select kinds of plants particularly useful to the welfare of humans and their animals. Bio-diversity has attracted the world wide attention because of growing awareness of its importance on the one hand, and the anticipated awareness depletion on the other. About 20 per cent of all species are expected to be lost within 30 years and 50 per cent or more by the end of 21st Century (Myers, 1993). India is one of the 12 mega-diversity countries globally recognized for its rich diversity, since its geographic position extends from sea level to the highest mountain ranges in the world.

Types of propagation

There are mainly two types of propagation

1. Sexual propagation
2. Asexual propagation

Seed spices, an important group of horticultural crops, are defined as vegetable products or mixture thereof, free from extraneous matter, primarily used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma of foods item and beverages. Besides food industry, the seed spices have medicinal properties and thus are used in various pharmaceutical preparations and cosmetics (Malhotra and Vashishtha, 2008).  India is known as the home of spices and produces a wide variety of seed spices- coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, ajowan, dill, nigella, celery, anise and caraway. Over the years a good number of high yielding varieties have been developed under AICRP on Spices of ICAR by SAU’s and National Research Centre on Seed Spices. India enjoys the status of largest producer of seed spices in the world but the productivity in the country is very low and is 25-30 % of the total potential of the crop varieties.

Abstract

The studies were conducted during the years 2002 and 2003, to standardize the best method and time for summer budding in walnut. Four methods of summer budding viz. chip, annular, patch and shield were performed at 10 days interval from 15th May to 24th July. The results revealed that among the four methods of summer budding, chip budding was found to be highly superior to other methods of budding and gave 92% bud take success on 25th May and 87 per cent on 15th May also. Annular budding performed on 14th June was found next superior method and time of budding for walnut propagation when it resulted in 81% bud take success. Chip budded plants attained maximum height and radial growth as compared to annular and patch budded plants. The period from mid of May to first week of June was considered as optimum time for chip budding and mid June to end of June for annular and patch budding for walnut propagation under mid hill conditions of North-western Himalayas.

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Several propagation structures are helpful in propagation of horticultural crops. These structures are helpful for seed germination, rooting of cuttings, layering, grafting etc. and other hardening operations. The structures which facilitate propagation of plants are called propagation structures. Propagation structures are required for propagating plants by seed, cuttings and grafting.2.2

GREENHOUSE

Greenhouse is a structure covered with glass or polythene for protection against adverse climatic conditions as well as to provide optimum environment for growth of the plants. Greenhouse has been used long back by horticulturists as a means of forcing rapid growth of plants and extending the growing season particularly in colder areas. Plants are grown or cuttings are rooted in a greenhouse when the atmospheric condition does not permit for raising them in outdoor conditions. Modern greenhouses are equipped with regulatory mechanisms for controlling temperature, light intensity, air, humidity etc. Plants in green house are grown in the ground bed or bench type raised beds. The size of the greenhouses and dimensions of beds vary according to the need of propagators. Glass covered greenhouses are expensive but they have long life. However, for short-term benefits, plastic covered greenhouses can also be made. Plastic covered greenhouses are lighter than glass covered ones but there is increase in humidity is such houses, especially in winters, which results in undesirable water drops on the plants. It can however be overcome by making adequate ventilation. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has also been used in construction of greenhouses but it tends to darken pre-maturely in sunlight. In India, construction of temporarily low-cost poly houses is in fashion for raising nursery of fruit plant in off-season. Such low-cost greenhouses are constructed either on wood or metal framework and are covered with polyethylene sheet of 0.10 to 0.15mm thickness, which is resistant to ultra-violet rays. These houses are equipped with thermostat, cooler or an air conditioner or humidifier etc for rigid control on temperature and humidity. Greenhouses made from fibre glass sheet are more durable than the polythene houses, but are quite expensive. In greenhouses, two types of beds are used for raising seedlings. In greenhouses, the beds may either be prepared on ground itself or raised beds or bench type beds are used. Greenhouse structures vary from elementary home constructed to elaborate commercial installations.

1. DEFINITIONS

Propagation : Propagation of plants may be defined as the controlled reproduction of plants by man to perpetuate selected individual or groups of individual plants which have specific value to him or it is the perpetuation of plants as independent units by means of seeds, bulbs, layers, cuttings, or grafts.

• Seed: A seed has been defined as a young plant packed ready to start growing when required.
• Apomixis: Development of seeds without the complete sexual process is known as apomixes and seed produced in this manner is called apomictic seeds.
• Seed dormancy: The embryo of the seed remains in inactive stage from the time of its development to the time it germinates. This failure of the embryo is termed as dormancy of the seed.
• After-ripening: Some seeds germinate fully when freshly harvested, but they germinate after a period of dry storage. The change taking place in such seeds are known as after- ripening.
• Embryo dormancy: Conditions existing within the embryo.
• After-ripening dormancy: Seeds fail to germinate when freshly harvested, but they germinate after a period of dry storage. Such seeds are known as after-ripening dormant seeds. This is due to the physiological changes taking place in embryo.

Plant propagation techniques refer to the methods by which the plants are multiplied and increased in number.

Methods of Propagation

i) Sexual Method of Propagation - Seeds are used as propagating material.

ii) Asexual Methods of Propagation - Plant parts, other than seeds are used for plant propagation.

Guava, Psidium guajava L., belongs to the family Myrtaceae, which comprises 3,000 species under 80 genera. It is well-distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, especially in South America, Asia and Australia. The genus Psidium has about 150 shrubs and P. guajava is wellknown and grown worldwide. The flower of guava is self-pollinated; cross pollination, however, is estimated to be around 35% and pollination mainly carried-out of by bees and other insects. Therefore, seed multiplication will result in genetic heterogeneity that can be observed in orchards and plants in the same orchard. Therefore, seed propagation in commercial orchards to increase productivity is not recommended. The methods of vegetative propagation have been studied for the purpose of the production chain. In addition to the propagation structure, the costs of new technologies must also be taken into account.
Progress in guava propagation has taken place in the last 100 years. It is important to know how to use the same methods of graftings and cutting. Detection of growth regulators, information on role of the juvenile stage in reproduction, advances in knowledge of chimeras, micro-propagation and application of vegetative propagation to prevent diseases caused by viruses and other pathogens. One can propagate guava by buddings, air layering, stoolings and inarching are not yet commercially feasible due to different success rates, the lack of a tap root system and burdensome processes. The purpose of this review is to discuss the diverse methods of propagating guava which are used commercially and the advancement made in recently.

Plant propagation is the science of generating new plants. Basically, in plant kingdom, the plants multiply themselves either asexually or by sexual means. In asexual propagation methods, plants use any of the vegetative part of the plant to produce offspring such as stem, root, buds, etc. The plants thus produced are having exactly the same genetic blueprint as that of the parent plant. However, in the sexual method of propagation, the specialized parts of the plants which have undergone meiosis takes parts such as pollen and ovule to produce seed which on germination produces the plants having characters encoded on its genome. Such plants may have a blend of characters of both the parents. The seed production is a complex phenomenon which takes place after fertilization (Bhatnagar and Johri, 1972).

Spices play important roles in daily life and India is a rich repository of spices. Various biotechnological approaches like micropropagation, somaclonal variation, in vitro conservation, synseed technology, protoplast fusion, production of flavor and coloring components, and development of novel transgenics have great significance in conservation, utilization and increasing the production and productivity of spices. Protocols for micropropagation and production of disease free planting materials are available for many spices. Efficient plant regeneration protocols are also available for exploiting somaclonal variation ,where the available natural variability is relatively low. Technologies for isolation and culture of protoplasts were reported in a few spices. Development of transgenics for disease resistance is gaining momentum. Synseed and Micro-rhizome technology are also available for many spices for safe propagation, conservation, movement, and exchange of germplasm. In vitro and cryo preservation technologies for conservation of spices germplasm are available for many spices.

Kewda is exclusively propagated through ground suckers and leaf bearing terminal cuttings. In kewda growing areas, predominantly the terminal shoot cuttings are used in commercial plantations. However, the seeds are also capable to germinate and give rise to plants, but it is not in practice due to hard mesocarp and seed coat (Bailey, 1950, Deshaprabhu, 1966, Mott, 1975, Maharana and Jagadev, 1993).

Seed propagation

In kewda, the flowers develop into berries, which fuse to form a multiple fruit. The receptacle and bracts are included in the fruit. The seeds are deep seated and very difficult to extract, hence seeds are sown along with the fibrous drupes. Each drupe contains 2-9 seeds. Seeds collected from ripe fruits are sown during spring. The seeds normally, take about 3 months for germination due to the hard seed coat and impervious fibrous covering. Experimentally, it was observed that one hour sulphuric acid scarification treatment of the drupes reduced the germination period by about one month increasing the germination percentage as compared to direct sowing, however, scarification for more than one hour was deterimental (Table 14) (Maharana and Jagadev, 1993). Bailey (1950) reported that seed soaking in tepid water for 24 hours would aid the germination. The seed propagated plants (Plate-27) take about 2-3 years more for flowering as compared to vegetatively propagated plants.

As stated by Murashige’s definition, artificial seed (or synthetic/synseed) technology was initially restricted to species in which somatic embryogenesis was possible. Later, Bapat and co-workers (1987) proposed to broaden the technology to the encapsulation of various in vitro-derived propagules, and they used axillary buds of Morus indica as a first example of this new application. The new concept paved the way for the encapsulation of explants other than somatic embryos, and to the formulation of a new definition of artificial seeds (Aitken-Christie et al. 1995) as “artificially encapsulated somatic embryos, shoots, or other tissues which can be used for sowing under in vitro or ex vitro conditions”. In other words, the “new” artificial seed, lost the original bond of containing an embryo (zygotic or somatic), can now contain any kind of explant from tissue culture (such as axillary buds, shoot tips, nodal segments, bulblets, protocorms, callus samples, cells) which, following ‘germination’, will evolve into a plantlet or a shoot (artificial seed conversion) or will produce new cell proliferation (artificial seed regrowth).

Realization of synthetic seed technology requires manipulation of in vitro culture system for large-scale production of viable materials for preparation of synthetic seed, subsequently conversion into complete plants under in vitro as well as in vivo conditions. Somatic and gametic embryogenesis that enhanced axillary bud proliferation are the efficient techniques for rapid and large-scale multiplication of desirable plant species. Plant tissues such as somatic embryos, apical shoot tips, axillary shoot buds, embryogenic calli, and protocom-like bodies are potential micropropagules that have been considered for creating synthetic seeds. Encapsulations of somatic embryos, apical and axillary shoot buds, and regeneration of whole plants from them have been reported for a number of plant species (Redenbaug et al., 1986; Mathur et al., 1989; Ganapathi et al., 1992; Lulsdorf et al., 1993).

General Instructions

The monitor of ultrasound machine should be placed at the eye-level. The daylight should not be too bright. The setting of the machine should be done to obtain best picture on the screen. There are various knobs on the machine to set contrast and brightness. There are three other knobs that are used to set near gain, far gain and overall gain. There is also a brightness bar (help-bar) on the screen with different brightness areas. These knobs should be turned clockwise or anti-clockwise, so that all the areas on the help bar (brightness bar) are visible.

Transrectal Procedure

In cattle, trans-rectal ultrasonography is done in a way, similar to rectal examination done for palpation of genital organs. Following steps are suggested for proper procedure

1. Properly restrain the animal.

2. Evacuate the feces from the rectum.

3. Select a transducer of proper frequency (the linear array transducer of 5.0 MHz frequency is useful for general purpose in bovines, however for detailed examination of early conceptus and small follicles, a transducer of 7.5 MHz can also be used. Some transducers have range of these frequencies in single-equipment. Such transducers of switch-able frequency are found more useful.

Plant nutrients are naturally components of the soil orchestrated by weathering processes and that the abundance of these metals in our soil environment now-a-days is due to numerous anthropogenic activities. In the environment, heavy metals are partitioned among the various environmental compartments such as water, soil, suspended solids and biota. Processes such as dilution, dispersion, sedimentation, adsorption and desorption govern their distribution. They also exist in colloidal ionic particulate and dissolved phases,  have a high affinity for humic acids, organic colloids and oxides coated with organic matter. The soluble forms are generally ions or unionised organo metallic chelates or complexes. The solubility of metals in soil and groundwater is predominantly controlled by pH, amount of metal, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon content, the oxidation state of the mineral components and the redox potential of the system.

Physical Properties of Soil

Physical properties of soil have many important roles in the crop production. The basic requirements for germination, seedling emergence and root development are adequate moisture and aeration, optimum temperature and absence of mechanical hindrance. After germination the further development of plant is also governed by physical conditions of soil. Soil texture, soil structure, soil density, soil consistence, soil water, soil air, soil temperature and soil colour are main physical properties of soils also affecting mechanical behaviour of soils. These are described here.

1. Soil Texture

The weathering divides larger particles of rocks and minerals in to the smaller ones. This process goes continuously. Thus, particles of different sizes ranging from large fragments of rocks to the very fine clay minerals are found in soil. However, for texture particles less than 2mm diameter is considered. The relative amount of these particles indicates the soil type also. Such as sandy soils contain more amounts of coarse particles i.e., sand and clayey soils are rich in fine particles. The rock and mineral particles having diameter less than 2.0 mm and come between specifies size are called as soil separates. International society of soil science (ISSS) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) systems are Generally, followed to classify the soil separates. This classification is given in table 3.1.
