Soyabean (Glycine max L. Merril) belongs to the legume family Fabaceae is one of the world’s most important legume crop and is the second most important cash crop in in India.

Economic Importance

Soyabean contributes to 25% of the global edible oil and about two-thirds of the world’s protein concentrate for livestock feeding (Agarwal, et al., 2013). In many countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Philippines, and Indonesia soyabean is considered to be a source of meat, milk, cheese, bread, and oil and therefore it is called “Cow of the field” or “Gold from soil” (Edwards et al., 2019). Soyabean is a chief source of protein and oil as it contains about 40% protein and 20% oil. Many processed products are made from soyabean such as soy milk, soy flour, soy protein, tofu etc. Due to its amino acids composition, soyabean protein is called a complete protein and is consumed at homes for food purposes. The protein fiber that remains after the oil has been extracted is a good source of animal feed for poultry, pork, cattle, other farm animals and pets. Soyabean is an important foreign exchange earner due to export of soybean defatted oil cake (Agarwal, et al., 2013). Bio diesel is produced from soyabean which is non-toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly and reduces particulate emissions.

Abstract
Managing weeds in agricultural productivity poses a formidable challenge. An increasingly common weed control strategy in ecologically friendly farming systems is integrated weed management, which involves bioherbicides. Ensuring global food security and environmental safety heavily relies on the sustainability of agricultural production. Worldwide, sustainable agricultural approaches, including the maintenance of a permanent layer of soil cover, the minimization of soil disruption, the implementation of regular crop rotations, the practice of integrated weed control, and the adoption of conservation agriculture, are becoming increasingly popular. Bio-herbicides are commonly derived from plants containing phytotoxic allelochemicals or specialized bacteria that can induce diseases and reduce the population of weeds within a given area. However, bio-herbicides have demonstrated significant potential in inhibiting the germination and spread of weed seeds. Bio-herbicides offer a promising, environmentally friendly, promising solution for weed control, as they are derived from natural sources such as bacteria, plants, or biochemical compounds. This study investigates the effectiveness, environmental benefits, and challenges of using bio-herbicides to achieve sustainable weed control. Bio-herbicides possess the capacity to reduce dependency on artificial pesticides, eradicate unintended harm to non-target organisms, and foster a more harmonious ecosystem by employing biological agents to target particular weeds selectively.

Horticulture has emerged as one of the potential agricultural enterprises in accelerating the growth of economy in India. Horticulture has been evolving in form of horticulture industry in our country owing to its significant role in nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation. The production of fruits, vegetables and flowers has acquired much importance in recent times due to their increasing demand. India has a wide variety of climate and soil on which different horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation crops and spices are cultivated successfully.

Liposomal formulations have emerged as a revolutionary platform in drug delivery systems, significantly enhancing the therapeutic efficacy and safety profile of numerous pharmaceutical agents (Crommelin et al., 2015). Liposomes are spherical vesicles composed of lipid bilayers, providing a versatile and biocompatible method for encapsulating both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs (Nsairat et al., 2022) (Liu et al., 2022). This encapsulation protects drugs from degradation, reduces systemic toxicity, and enhances their bioavailability (Gubernator, 2011). Beyond their protective capabilities, liposomes serve as an effective platform capable of delivering a diverse array of therapeutic agents, including conventional drugs, proteins, genes, and oligonucleotides (Gupta et al., 2023) (Salave et al., 2022 a) (Juliano et al., 2009). Their attractive biological properties, such as biocompatibility, enhanced solubility of hydrophobic compounds, stability of large molecules, and improved efficacy, position them as ideal candidates for advanced drug delivery systems. These properties enable precise targeting and controlled release strategies, thereby optimizing therapeutic outcomes across various medical applications (Polaka et al., 2021). The pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of liposomal formulations are crucial determinants of their clinical success. Pharmacokinetics involves the study of the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of drugs, while pharmacodynamics focuses on the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs and their mechanisms of action (Li et al., 2019) (Negus et al., 2018). Understanding these parameters in the context of liposomal delivery is essential to optimize therapeutic outcomes and minimize adverse effects.
Liposomal encapsulation can significantly alter the PK profile of a drug. By modifying drug release kinetics, liposomes can extend the half-life of encapsulated agents, ensuring sustained therapeutic effects and reducing dosing frequency (Rana et al., 2022). Moreover, the ability of liposomes to target specific tissues or cells through passive and active targeting mechanisms enhances drug distribution to the site of action, increasing efficacy and minimizing off-target effects (Salave et al., 2021)(Salave et al., 2022 b). For instance, the liposome surface can be covalently decorated with targeting ligands, enhancing binding and internalization by cancer cells that express receptors for these ligands (Riaz et al., 2018). These ligands can include immunoglobulins or their subunits, such as immunoglobulin fragment antigen binding (Fab’) and single-chain variable fragments (scFv), or nutrient molecules with affinity for cell surface receptors, such as transferrin and folate (Sapra et al., 2003) (Kang et al., 2011) (Cheng et al., 2010). Liposomes’ unique structural properties facilitate the incorporation of targeting ligands, pHsensitive components, and other modifications to refine the drug’s therapeutic profile (Salave et al., 2022 c)(Salave et al., 2023)(Zangabad et al., 2018). They can also be engineered to release encapsulated drugs at specific sites by sensitizing the bilayer membrane to stimuli such as light exposure, oxidation, enzymatic degradation, heat, or radiation (Lee et al., 2017) (Antoniou et al., 2021). Inappropriate land use and cultivation practices are one of the main reasons for the poverty and food insecurity faced by smallholders in most parts of the rural regions in India and other developing countries. Unsustainable agricultural practices lead to an exhaustion of soil resources, which results in reduced land productivity, aggravated land degradation, and a reduction in biodiversity. Conservation agriculture (CA),  has shown to improve, conserve and use natural resources in a more efficient way through integrated management of available soil, water and biological resources. It is now widely recognized as a viable concept for sustainable agriculture due to its comprehensive benefits in economic, environmental and social terms. Its ability to increase grain yields to provide better economic performance and reduce production risks and to improve energy use efficiency has been well-documented. 

Rice is the most important crop in India occupying about 43.7 million hectares area with a production of 136.5 million tonnes (rough rice/ paddy). As the human population is increasing, so is the demand for rice, yet yields of the crop are leveling out. At present, the rice yield in India is 3.12 t/ha as against the world average of 4.11 t/ha. Not only this, the rice yield in India is exactly half than that of China (6.26 t/ha). The World Development Report 2008 predicts that cereal production would have to increase by 50% by 2030 to meet the escalating worldwide demand. The additional rice for increasing population will have to be produced on less land with less water, less labour, and reduced inputs.The major constraint in rice production in India is the lack of suitable crop management practices and sufficient irrigation facilities. The water crisis is threatening the sustainability of the irrigated rice system and food security in many parts of the world. Despite efforts on a variety of fronts, including genetic engineering of rice strains for improved yield and nutrition, no concrete solution has been found yet. There is a challenge to develop novel technologies and production systems that allow rice production to be maintained or increased in the face of declining water availability. To produce 1 kg of grain, farmers have to put 2 to 3 times more water in rice fields than in those growing other cereals.

The increasing water need for agriculture poses a potential threat to natural water resources and climatic change scenarios in the near future. The great challenge will be to increase food production with less water, particularly in countries with limited water and land resources, by promoting techniques and cropping systems of higher water-use efficiency (WUE).There is also much evidence that water scarcity already prevails in rice-growing areas in India, where rice farmers need technologies to cope with water shortage and ways must be sought to grow rice with less water.The farmers, especially those, who are resource-poor, are losing interest in rice cultivation as its profitability is declining with the rise in input costs. But, system of rice intensification (SRI) and aerobic rice culture appear to be a viable alternative of rice cultivation that may save the expensive inputs, improve soil health/ quality and protect the environment substantially.

ABSTRACT

Plant tissue culture is an important and efficient technique for the production of desired plant products with different and improved variety in aseptic conditions. Plant tissue culture methods have a wide scope for the creation, conservation, and utilization of genetic variability for the genetic improvement of field, fruit, vegetable, forest crops, medicinal and aromatic plants. The main objective of this communication were to collects the information and techniques of tissue culture to genetic improvement of the medicinal plants. Tissue culture technique in combination with molecular techniques has been successively used to incorporate specific traits through gene transfer. Modified varieties of medicinal plants is mostly required, as some compounds like alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, saponins, phenolics, flavanoids, and amino acids etc are extracted from these plants. From the ancient time up to 20th century, most of the human-being are dependent on the medicinal plant for basic healthcare needs and improving such a crop is the most important for this billionaire world. As far conventional methods of genetic improvements the tissue culture techniques takes cheap and lesser time required for traits specific improvements in the MAPs.

In the previous chapter the physical methods of fruit and vegetables processing and preservation have been discussed. The present chapter deals with chemical method of fruit and vegetable preservation. In this method of preservation of fruits and vegetables, chemicals as preservatives are used to prevent the spoilage of fruit and vegetable products. These preservatives react with food (produce) constituents or microorganisms and create unfavourable conditions which hinder growth, activities and multiplication of microbes responsible for spoilage of food products. These chemical agents have maximum permissible limit of their use as law. They can be classified into two classes class I and class II.

Economic growth and the commercialization of agricultural systems have enhanced the adoption of various technological interventions in the farming systems (Rola-rubzen et al., 2020). The green revolution is one of the successful examples of technology interventions, which led to the agriculture transformation and thereby brought reduction in the hunger and poverty of India (Minten and Barrett, 2008). It conclusively proved that the adoption of these farm technology interventions can increase production, productivity and farm income. The technology interventions consisted of a package of improved crop varieties, irrigation, fertilizers, plant protection chemicals, and agricultural machinery.It also brought to fore that the nation’s capacity to maximise its agricultural production potential also relied upon the responsiveness of farmers who were the ultimate decision makers. Thus the availability and accessibility of these technologies to the farmers, and their ability to adopt and utilise these technologies assumed paramount significance in the whole process.

Later decades of twentieth century proved that, along with men, women’s role is vital in agricultural production and they are the backbone of the rural economy in many developing countries including India. It is reported that women are responsible for more than 50 per cent of the world’s food production and account for about 43 per cent of the total agricultural labour force (Doss, 2018). In India, about 78 per cent of economically active women are engaged in agriculture compared to 63 per cent of men. Moreover,in rural India, almost 50 per cent of rural women are classified as agricultural labourers and 37 per cent as cultivators.

Gel electrophoresis is a technique for separating charged molecules with different sizes. Two kinds of gels are commonly used: agarose and polyacrylamide. Agarose gels can be applied to a wider range of sizes than polyacrylamide gels.  By using standard agarose electrophoresis, nuclei acids up to 50 kb may be separated. If Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis is used, the upper limit can be extended to 10 Mb. Polyacrylamide gels may separate nucleic acids that differ in length by only 1 nucleotide if their length is less than 500 bp (Sambrook et al., 1989).

The prospects of Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR) are exceedingly uncertain. The FAnGR characterize the genetic makeup of the thousands of local breeds worldwide which are well-adapted for producing in harsh environments, and which for millennia have been essential in nourishing human communities. Currently, the genetic diversity in numerous livestock breeds across the world is threatened. Decades of consistent selection intended mainly for production increase has caused irreversible loss of genetic diversity (FAO, 2009).

Despite harbouring some of nature’s richest natural resources, mountains are home to some of the world’s poorest people, many of whom are marginalized subsistence farmers. These communities living in the mountain region have hardly benefited from the ‘green revolution’ and global economic growth.

Rose is the world's most recognized cut flower and one of India's most important commercial floriculture crops. This chapter provides comprehensive information on rose origin, taxonomy, genetics, breeding, varieties and commercial types. It emphasizes greenhouse production, including temperature, humidity, light, carbon dioxide, greenhouse orientation, planting systems, pruning, training, fertigation and crop regulation. Major pests and diseases, harvesting stages, grading, postharvest treatment, vase life and yield are also covered. Modern greenhouse varieties and newly developed spray and standard roses demonstrate the diversity of cultivars available for premium markets. INTRODUCTION

Research in agriculture and allied activities and the subsequent technological innovations are important requisites for enhanced productivity and generating income for the farmers. In India, farming is a way of livelihood to 65 per cent of nearly 1. 1 billion population. Our farm population is increasing annually by 1. 84 per cent. The average farm size is becoming smaller each year and the cost-riskreturn structure of farming is becoming adverse with the result that farmers are getting increasingly indebted. There is no option except to produce more food and other commodities under conditions of diminishing per capita arable land and irrigation water resource. Hence, we must harness the best in frontier technologies, thus integrate them with traditional wisdom and thereby launch an eco-technology movement.

The productivity in agricultural sectors is dependent on several bio physical and socio-economic factors. The significant biophysical factors are weather parameters, soil health, water resources, crops/ varieties and pest environments. In order to monitor the impact of weather parameters, we need to have weather forecasts and the accuracy of which to harvest the economic benefits should be given top priority. Only fifty years ago, weather forecasting was an art which was derived after interpretation of data received from land based observing stations, balloons and aircraft etc. Now, modern technology particularly computers / weather satellites / radars has resulted in enormous improvements in the accuracy of weather forecasting with the help of various coordinated meteorological observing networks.
