What is natural pest and disease control?

Pests and diseases are part of the natural environmental system. In this system there is a balance between predators and pests. This is nature’s way of controlling populations. The creatures that we call pests and the organisms that cause disease only become ‘pest and diseases’ when their activities start to damage crops and affect yields.

If the natural environmental system is imbalanced then one population can become dominant because it is not being preyed upon. The aim of natural control is to restore a balance between pest and predator and to keep pests and diseases down to an acceptable level. The aim is not to eradicate them altogether, as they also have a role to play in the natural system.

Once a pest or disease has started to attack a crop, the damage cannot be repaired and control becomes increasingly difficult. Where possible, use techniques to avoid or prevent pest and disease attack in the first place.

ABSTRACT

Punjab is the richest state in the country in term of per capita income and has earned the name as food bowl of the country by putting 84-85 per cent of its geographical area under highly intensive, technical and mechanical agriculture with cropping intensity as high as 185 per cent and contributing more than one third of rice and half of its wheat production to the central pool of food reserve. The food grain production in the state has increased approximately twelve times in a span of about 50 years after independence from 20 lac tones in 1950-51 to 234.89 lakh tonnes in 2002-2003. Achieving this high productivity without caring for natural resources has resulted in a considerable loss in the inherent production potential and deterioration of soil health. As a result, man is getting serious warning signals in the form of lowering of water table, drought, high rate of environmental pollution, extremes of climatic parameters, etc. Agriculture in the state has become too intensive, wasteful and reckless and the radical changes are required to maintain the balance. Therefore, there is a strong thinking to diversify farming in the state to maintain the sustainability of the whole system. The state government is stressing hard to save the natural resources through the diversification in traditional crop rotation and adopt resource-conserving measures.

ABSTRACT

Eastern part of the Uttar Pradesh falls in mid-Gangetic plain commonly called as ‘Purvanchal’. It is divided into three ecozones : i) North eastern tarai, ii) Eastern Plains, and iii) Vindhyan. Most of the farmers of the region have subsistence agriculture with small land holding. Although total forest area is 10.69 per cent of the geographical area, the actual well stocked forests (medium and good forests) in the region are confined to 3.51%. Vindhyan zone indicates higher dependence for fire wood (35% of the total need) on natural forests. Cow dung is major source used as fuel in Eastern plains (65% of the fuel requirement). The cropping systems are different in rainfed and irrigated lands. Surveys of different parts of the eastern U. P. indicate that people have a progressive attitude towards agroforestry. However, due to land hunger most of the farmers develop homesteads. Agrihorticulture system is most popular system adopted by large and medium farmers in the region. Agrisilvihorticulture system is adopted by the farmers of Eastern plains and North eastern tarai zones. Agrisilviculture, Silvihorticulture, Agrisilvihorticulture and sivipastoral systems researched by us, are recommended for adoption by the farmers.

ABSTRACT

Modelling has been used in natural sciences since centuries in one-way or the other. However, system modelling as a discipline in itself is established in the recent years. Agroforestry modelling is a complex process that essentially involves at least two elements viz. tree and crop, where tree is the long term and crop is the short-term component. Agroforestry models, usually, predict tree growth and yield and the reduction/enhancement in crop yield as influenced by the tree component in temporal and spatial sequence. In this paper the need of modeling, stages of model development, its validation and classification of models are given. The models, which are relevant to agroforestry, have also been given.

INTRODUCTION

Agroforestry combines agriculture and forestry technologies to create more integrated, diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land use systems. According to the Association for Temperate Agroforestry - “Agroforestry practices are intentional combinations of trees with crops and/ or livestock that involve intensive management of the interactions between the components as an integrated agroecosystem”. These key characteristics are the essence of agroforestry and are what distinguish it from other farming or forestry practices. To be called agroforestry, a land use practice must satisfy all of these criteria:

Digestive System and Digestion in Chicken

Studies on structure and functions of digestive system of chicken play important role for their nutrition and feeding. Functions of each part are given below (Fig 35):

Mouth: Birds feed through the beak. The horny upper and lower mandibles form the beak. Lips, teeth, cheek and soft palate are absent. The dagger-like tongue helps to force the feed into the esophagus. Chicken has 24 taste buds with high sense of taste. Absence of teeth makes the particle size of the feed important.

Esophagus (Gullet): It is made of loose fibrous tissue and serves as a tube to pass the food from mouth to crop. This is relatively long because of the long neck of the fowl.

Crop: (Ingluvius): It is a pouch like structure of esophagus to store, moisten and soften the food. It gives information about the feeding habits of the fowl.

Proventriculus (Glandular stomach or True stomach): It is an enlarged glandular ovoid structure of the esophagus connected to gizzard. It secretes pepsin and Hydrochloric acid.

Gizzard (Muscular stomach): Disc shaped muscular organ with two pairs of strong thick muscles and lined internally with a thick horny epithelial covering called the Koilin layer. Coarse materials are ground well by its powerful contractions with the support of the grit that birds consume.

Principles of Incubation

Incubation is a process by which the embryo within egg develops into a fully formed chick capable of breaking free from the shell. Basically, when a hen incubates an egg, it means she is on the egg in order to keep it warm for a certain period of time, 21 days for chicken, until the chick embryo has fully formed and is ready to hatch. The incubation period in other species is given in Table 41. The following factors affect the incubation on egg

1. Temperature

Incubator temperature should be maintained between 99 and 100 oF. The acceptable range is 97 to 102 ^oF. Overheating is more critical than under heating. An incubator should be operated in a location free from drafts and direct sunlight. Temperature is probably the most important single factor influencing the development of the embryo. A higher temperature will advance the hatch and a lower temperature will delay hatch. Younger embryos are especially susceptible to high temperatures because the upper lethal limit is very close to the optimum incubating temperature. High temperature will cause the embryonic membranes to dry out too soon. Chicks that hatch may have an unsteady gait.

Lipids are a group of naturally occurring molecules that include fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, and K), monoglycerides, diglycerides, triglycerides, phospholipids, and others. The main biological functions of lipids include storing energy, signalling, and acting as structural components of cell membrane. Lipids have applications in the cosmetic and food industries as well as in nanotechnology.

Lipids may be broadly defined as hydrophobic or amphiphilic small molecules; the amphiphilic nature of some lipids allows them to form structures such as vesicles, liposomes, or membranes in an aqueous environment. Biological lipids originate entirely or in part from two distinct types of biochemical subunits or “building-blocks”: ketoacyl and isoperen groups. Using this approach, lipids may be divided into eight categories:fatty acids, glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, saccharolipids and polyketides (derived from condensation of ketoacyl subunits); and sterol lipids and prenol lipids (derived from condensation of isoprene subunits).

Although the term lipid is sometimes used as a synonym for fats, fats are a subgroup of lipids called triglycerides. Lipids also encompass molecules such as fatty acids and their derivatives (including tri-, di-, monoglycerides and phospholipids), as well as other sterol containing metabolites such as chloestrol. Although humans and other mammals use various biosynthetic pathways to both break down and synthesize lipids, some essential lipids cannot be made this way and must be obtained from the diet.

Plant hormones - They are defined as:

5. Promote or inhibit growth and developmental responses;
6. Often show a separation of the site of production and the site of action (although this isn’t as clear a distinction as in animals).

3.1 Introduction

Ozone (O₃) is present throughout the atmosphere and can have either positive or negative effect depending on where it is found. The stratosphere (15-50 km) has the largest (90%) concentrations of O₃ (Colls, 1997). Stratospheric O₃ is important as it regulates the transmittance of ultraviolet light to the surface of the earth. Hence reductions in stratospheric O₃ in Polar regions, particularly the Antarctic “ozone hole”, are of concern regarding the health effects of exposure to increased levels of ultra violet (UV) radiation. In the troposphere (0-15 km), O₃ is a toxic pollutant of global importance and it is a major constituent of photochemical smog. Interest in pollutant O₃ and in its effects on living organisms has increased in the last decades as a consequence of the rise in its ground-level concentration and of the widening of its diffusion (Ashmore, 2005). Economic growth requires more energy production, which would result in increased production of NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) precursors for O₃ formation (Ghude et al., 2008).

14.1 Introduction

Atmospheric concentration of CO₂ has increased from 280 ppm in pre-industrial era to 385 ppm in 2008 (+ 37.5%) and is presently increasing at the rate of 2 ppm yr^-1 or 3.5 Pg yr^-1 (1 Pg or petagram = 1 Gt = 1 gigaton = 1 billion metric ton). The increase in CO₂ emission by human activity is attributed to fossil fuel combustion, deforestation and biomass burning, soil cultivation and drainage of wetlands or peat soils. Increase in fossil fuel combustion is caused by high global energy demand of 475 Quads (1 quad = 1015 BTU) and increasing at the rate of 2.5 % yr^-1, especially in emerging economies including China, India, Mexico, Brazil, etc. The world population of 6.7 billion in 2008 is increasing at the rate of 1.3 % yr^-1 and is projected to be 9.5 billion by 2050 before stabilizing at 10 billion towards the end of the 21^st century. There exists a strong positive correlation between population growth on the one hand and CO₂ emission or the energy demand on the other. The People’s Republic of China accounted for 13% of the world’s C emissions in 2002 and that share is projected to rise to 18% by 2025 (Lal, 2004a).

Human activities have resulted in the alteration of the composition of our atmosphere triggering change in the Earth’s climate. The world’s population has grown at an alarming rate with a corresponding increase in demand for natural resources, energy, food, and goods. As a consequence of increase in consumption, vast quantities of gases and effluents are discharged that change the composition of the atmosphere and its capacity to regulate its temperature. The rise in the global temperature is caused by the accumulation of the so-called “greenhouse gases”, namely, carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. Energy received from the sun is absorbed as short wavelength radiation and is eventually returned to space as long wavelength infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases absorb the infrared radiation, trapping it in the atmosphere in the form of heat energy.

Introduction

Definition of ‘urban’ areas varies from country to country. Consequently, it is difficult to provide a universally acceptable meaning of the term. The difficulty has been summarised by UN (1998) as follows: “because of national differences in the characteristics that distinguish urban from rural areas, the distinction between urban and rural population is not amenable to a single definition that would be applicable to all countries” (UN, 1998). In many cases the divide between a rural and an urban area is based on the minimum population, but the number varies widely between the countries, e.g., 200 in Iceland, 2000 in some countries of West Asia, 5000 in India, and 10000 in Italy! Despite this challenge, most towns and cities are historical phenomena and have their defined administrative boundaries for services and other purposes, including municipalities. These places straight away qualify as the urban centres.

Banana plants are monocotyledonous, perennial and important crop in the tropical and sub tropical world regions. Traded plantain (Musa paradisiaca AAB) and other cooking bananas (Musa ABB) are almost entirely derived from AA-BB hybridization of M. acuminata (AA) and M. balbisiana (BB). Plantain and cooking bananas are very similar to unripe dessert bananas (M. cavendish AAA) in exterior appearance, although often larger. Main difference in the former is the starchy flesh rather than sweet and they are used unripe and require cooking. Dessert bananas are consumed usually as ripe fruits; whereas ripe and unripe plantain fruits are usually consumed boiled or fried. Large numbers of cultivars totalling about 70 are grown in different parts of the country. Commercial cultivation of Nendran has picked up rapidly in Tamil Nadu in the recent past. Nendran bunch has 5-6 hands weighing about 12-15 kg. Fruits have a distinct neck with thick green skin turning buff yellow on ripening. Fruits remain as starchy even on ripening. Keeping banana as a whole fruit for long time is not feasible due to its poor shelf life. The processed products from banana are also very limited at present and there is a good market potential for banana products such as banana figs, banana powder, banana jam, banana jelly and beverage (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry).

Introduction

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is valued as one of the most important commercial horticultural crops in India, belonging to the family Anacardiaceae and widely grown in tropical areas. The name Anacardium refers to the shape of the fruit, which looks like an inverted heart (ana means “upwards” and - cardium means “heart”). It is native to Brazil, introduced to India by Portuguese for afforestation and soil conservation and now grown widely in the traditional and non-traditional regions of our country. Cashew is well adapted to warm humid climatic conditions. It is restricted to altitudes below 700 m, where temperature does not fall below 20°C for prolonged periods.

India is the second largest producer, processor as well as consumer of cashew. Yet, nearly 50% of the requirement of cashew processing industries is met through import. As against the processing requirement of approximately 20 lakh MT per annum, the domestic production of raw cashew nut is only about 9 lakh MT per annum. Major cashew producing states in India are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, West Bengal and interior tracts of Chasttisgarh, A & N islands, Gujarat, Jharkand and North Eastern regions. Though, there is limited scope for expansion of cashew producing area there is scope to increase income through cashew based commercial enterprises.

Spices are high value export oriented crops extensively used for flavouring food and beverages, medicines, cosmetics, perfumery etc. Spices constitute a significant and indispensable segment of culinary art and essentially add flavour, colour and taste to food preparations. Farm level processing operations are important for value addition and product diversification of spices. It is essential that various operations like washing, threshing, blanching, drying, cleaning, grading, storing and packaging ensure proper conservation of the basic qualities like aroma, flavour, pungency, colour etc. Each of these operations enhances the quality of the produce and the value of the spice.

India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices in the world. India produces more than 65 spices in different varieties out of the 109 spices listed by International Standards Organisation (ISO). India produces around 5.8 million tons of spices annually (2012-13), of this about 10% of the total produce is exported to over 150 countries. The USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East and Oceanic countries are the major importers of Indian spices. Estimated world trade in spices is 1.05 million tons valued at 2750 million US $, out of which India has a significant share of 48% in quantity and 43% in value.

India is one of the major producers and exporters of honey. Diversity of bee flora and varied agro-climatic conditions in the country offers enormous potential for the development and growth of apiculture. Honey is a supersaturated sugary material produced mainly by honey bees from the sweet substances of plants (floral or extra-floral nectaries) or insect. Honey bee forager (field bee/worker honey bee) collects the nectar and converts the same into honey by a process of regurgitation and evaporation and stores in the honey comb. The sweetness of the honey is largely by monosaccharide viz., fructose and glucose. Honey is either monofloral or polyfloral as it is collected by the bees. The physical properties of the harvested honey depend upon the source from it is derived, water content, temperature, proportion of the simple sugars present and the method of processing. At low temperature (below 17°C), honey gets crystallized. Honey is also hygroscopic, capable of absorbing water from the atmosphere. India produces approx. 65,000 mt of honey per year (Kejariwal, 2015).

Mushrooms are fleshy spore-bearing fruiting bodies of fungi, produced above ground on soil or on their food sources. Total number of useful fungi having edible and medicinal values is over 2,300 species. Like green plants, they do not contain chlorophyll and as a result cannot manufacture their own food. In this respect, they are like animals because; they feed themselves by digesting other organic matter. They are a large heterogeneous group having various shapes, size, appearance and edibility.

The use of mushrooms as food is very old. People harvested mushrooms from the wild for thousands of years for food and medicine. The Egyptians regarded mushrooms as food for pharaohs. The Greeks and Romans described them as food for God and served only on festive occasions. The first professional growers of mushrooms were the Chinese. China is the major producer and consumer of both edible and medicinal mushrooms. As early as 1313, a document was published which described the cultivation method for Shiitake on wood logs. Even older is the cultivation of the wood ear mushroom (Auricularia spp) of which sources indicates that it was cultivated from the year 600 A.D. onwards. The white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, was domesticated in France.

The food processing industry is a sunrise sector and contributes around 14% of Gross Domestic Product, 13% of India’s exports and 6% of total industrial investment. The Indian food retail market is expected to reach Rs 61 lakh crore by 2020 and the food processing industry accounts for 32% of the country’s total food market. This is considered as one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth.

The drift towards urbanisation and busier way of life, pave path to tremendous bounce in the food market. Nowadays consumer’s approach to being fit is not about going to gym, but also consulting dietitians and adopting an adjusted eating routine. Consumer’s behaviour concerning food consumption has undergone significant changes as a result of the increased awareness about different value added food products, brands, and cuisines, and also their greater willingness to experiment and ability to pay. It leads to the concept of food security in to nutritional security. Companies are offering a wider range of products to the consumers as a result of their investments into product innovation, research and development. At present, various value added products with versatile colour, shape, ingredients etc are available in worldwide market. Among this, some food items like processed fruits and vegetables and dairy products have witnessed a momentous growth in export also. Recent surveys indicated that for companies manufacturing processed foods and beverages, rise in the obesity rate is a great challenge. Hence, efforts were made to develop commercially viable, new process protocols to design healthy products from underutilised food commodities.

21^st century challenges like climate change, water scarcity, increasing world population, rising food prices, and other socio-economic impacts are expected to generate a great threat to agriculture and food security worldwide, especially for the poorest people who live in arid and sub-arid regions. Millet is one of the oldest foods known to humans and possibly the first cereal grain to be used for domestic purposes. Millet has been used in Africa and India as a staple food for thousands of years. Typical grain texture and hard seed coat of millets increase their keeping quality but make them difficult to process as well as to cook in convenient form. Absence of appropriate primary processing technologies to prepare ready-to-use or ready-to-cook (RTC) products and also the secondary as well as tertiary processing technologies to prepare ready-to-eat value added products from millets are the major limiting factors for their diversified food uses.

Millets have relatively poor digestibility and low bio-availability of minerals due to the presence of inherent anti-nutritional factors. The difficulties in millet grain processing present a challenge but nutritional as well as health benefits and consumer demand for health foods provide opportunities in processing, develop suitable technology for newer products and process mechanization. This change in technology and consumer food preference would help in increasing the area under millets, maintaining ecological balance, ensuring food security, prevent malnutrition and increase the scope for utilization of millet grains on industrial scale.

Farming system is an integrated set of activities that farmers perform in their farms with available resources and circumstances to maximize the productivity and net farm income on a sustainable basis. The farming system conceptually is a set of elements or components, i.e., soil, water, crops, livestock, labour, capital, energy and other resources that are interrelated and interact among themselves. At the centre of the interaction lies the farmer exercising control and choice regarding the types of results of interaction. The income of cropping alone from small and marginal farm is insufficient now to sustain the farmers family. A judicious mix of any one or more of these enterprises should complement the farm income and help in recycling the farm residues / wastes. The selection of enterprises must be based on the cardinal principles of minimizing the competition and maximizing the complementary between the enterprises. Of late, the researchers on multidisciplinary approach greatly realized and started developing the various farming systems models in accordance with the agro-eco systems zones.

Farming System thus may be defined as a complex interrelated matrix of soil, plants, animals, implements, power, labour, capital and other inputs controlled in part by farming families and influenced to varying degrees by political, economic, institutional and social forces that operate at many levels. The farming system therefore, refers to the farm as an entity of inter-dependent farming enterprises carried out on the farm. The farm is viewed in a holistic manner and the farmers are subjected to many socio-economic, biophysical, institutional, administrative and technological constraints.

Fermentation plays a major role in our diet and give the basic foods like bread, yoghurt, wine and cereal and legume based traditional fermented foods. The development of fermented food products can be considered as one of the greatest achievements of human civilization and goes back thousands of years. It arose from the necessity to conserve foods, to make them more digestible and also more enjoyable. During the centuries, man learned by trial and error to conduct the fermentation processes by changing physical and chemical parameters in the basic food ingredients. It took much longer, however, to discover the cause of fermentation processes: only towards the end of the 19th century it was demonstrated, that baker’s yeast is the cause of alcoholic fermentation. Through the development of the technique of "pure microbial culture", the basis for a controlled use of microbes in food industry was established.

The unique feature of fermented foods is the vital role of microorganisms that bring about essential bio-trasformations of the substrates during fermentation contributing number of desirable properties such as improved product shelf life, enriched diet with improved flavor and texture, increased safety, enriched nutritional supplement and probiotic functions. Fermentation is a chemical reaction carried out by many types of microorganisms to obtain energy. Fermentation is a process for production of a product by means of mass culture of microorganisms. In fermentation, microorganisms breakdown complex organic compounds into simpler substances. Although chemical changes and microbial growth usually mean food spoilage, in some cases fermentation is desirable and microorganisms are actually added to foods. For example, in the production of beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages, yeasts convert sugar into ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. In the making of yogurt and cheese, lactic acid bacteria convert lactose, a sugar found in milk, to lactic acid. Alcohol, acids, and other compounds produced in fermentation act as preservatives, inhibiting further microbial growth. In addition to its use with alcoholic beverages, cheese, and yoghurt, fermentation is used to produce yeast bread, soy sauce, cucumber pickles, sauerkraut, and other traditional fermented food products. The variation in agroclimatic conditions prevailing in India and diverse form of dietary culture of various ethnical groups produced traditional fermented foods such as idli, dosa (rice-legume based), vada, papad, wari, balle (legume based), bhatura, jelabi, nan (wheat based), paneer, shrikhand (milk based).

2.1 Introduction

Each step in the food industry system e.g. food production, processing, transportation, storage, distribution and marketing, has some impact on the environment and there is much concern about environmental pollution. Due to the highly diversified nature of the food industry, various food processing, handling and packaging operations create wastes of different quality and quantity, which, if not treated, could lead to increasing disposal problems and severe pollution problems [24]. The preservation of the natural environment from industrial pollution is currently receiving much attention. In food industry, the most important problem is treatment and disposal of large quantities of waste water, a by-product of various processing operations. It is one of the largest industry groups comprising the manufacturing sector of the U.S. economy [47]. Likewise, India is the world’s second largest producer of food next to China, and has the potential of being the largest food processor. The total food production in India is likely to double in the next ten years [22]. Flour and grain; soft drinks and carbonated water; breweries; starch and miscellaneous food products; meat, poultry and fish; tea, coffee and other beverages; fruit juices; animal feed; sugar; distilleries and blending of spirits; cocoa, chocolates and sugar confectioneries; agricultural and food chemicals and industrial packaging are important sub-sectors of the food processing industry. Food processing projects involve the processing and packaging of meat products, fish and shell fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, grains and beverages production. It includes refinement, preservation, improvement of product, storage, handling, packaging and canning (Fig. 1). Introduction

Groundwater is an important source of irrigation in India and has played a major role in increasing the food production. About 50 per cent of total irrigated area in the country is dependent on groundwater (Central Water Commission (CWC), 2000). Productivity of groundwater is normally more than the surface water due to the fact that it is available at the point of use, requires minimum conveyance infrastructure, is available on demand and maximizes the application efficiency. However, in past few years, excessive and unplanned groundwater pumping in certain parts of the country has resulted in depletion of groundwater resources. Water table in these region is going down day by day and making it beyond the reach of poor farmers. Therefore, keeping the water table in the desirable range is a major concern. This can be achieved by adopting proper pumping rate and pumping schedule. Groundwater modelling has successfully been used for deciding the pumping rate and pumping schedule. Groundwater modelling refers to simulation of groundwater behaviour under varying pumping and recharge conditions. A groundwater model is simply a set of equations, which describe the physical processes active in the aquifer subjected to certain assumptions. While the model itself obviously lacks the detailed reality of the groundwater systems, the behaviour of the validated model approximates that of the aquifer.

In this chapter, an attempt is made to emphasize the fact that while no country in the World is safe from geohazards, a proper understanding on their causes, ways to mitigate them and surviving techniques would help reduce the life and property loss. Each geohazard has its own characteristic way of potential impact and hence classifying vulnerability of different regions and creating awareness on potential impact is essential. In addition to providing basic information on geohazards, this chapter presents a conceptual model on hazard mitigation, rescue and relief operations.

INTRODUCTION

Every year, thousands of people are killed by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and floods. These natural causes damage human settlements and infrastructures (GOI, 2004) inflicting life and economic loss. As human population increases, habitation on hazardous and or vulnerable land becomes more common and the risks posed by these hazards increase. The need to observe their behavior, understand them better and mitigate their effects become ever more urgent (IGOS, 2003). Decades of research may have contributed towards betterment of our understanding on the processes of geohazard formation but still a long way has to be covered to develop better mitigation procedures.

A review on historic occurrences of tsunamis in the Indian Ocean and their associated characteristics followed by detailed characterization of genetic causes of recent tsunamiarepresented in this chapter. Althoughsubmarineearthquakes occur very frequently, resultant tsunami and its strength relied on many factors including transformation of energy into the ocean water, area of rupturing of ocean floor, duration of rupturing, accompanying submarine slides, kind of material at focus of earthquakes and type of faulting. The direction of tsunami wave propagation plays the decisive role in deciding sites of impacts. Perfect blend of all these parameters is required to make a submarine earthquake to generate devastating tsunami, which is relatively rare in geological history. This is the reason why although there were as many as 77 tsunamis that occurred in the Indian Ocean region during historic past, the recent one of 26th December 2004 is deadly and rare geological occurrence. However, aftermath effects in terms of volcanic eruptions, coastal high wave activities and change in climatic cycles are recorded since then and require constant scientific vigil.

INTRODUCTION

Tsunami is defined as a sea wave of local or distant origin that results from large-scale seafloor displacement associated with major earthquake or submarine slide or submarine volcanic explosion. Many a times it is incorrectly described as tidal wave or seismic sea wave, as both of these terms mislead in regard to its mechanism of generation. In Tamil Sangam literature, tsunami is cited as “Azhipperalai”. In South America, it is termed as “Maremoto”. Other names for tsunami include “Flutwellen”, “Vloedgolven” “raz de mare” “Vagues Sismique” and Kai e’e. Prevalence of specific terms for tsunami in many such regions and languages itself stands testimony to the fact that tsunami is known to ancient human populations and that tsunami occurred frequently the historics past.

This chapter provides an introduction to cyclogenesis, nature of cyclone disaster and historic events. The mechanism that is in practice in cyclone mitigation, information dissemination and relief and rescue operations are detailed. As the state of Orissa is being battered more frequently by cyclones than any other state of India, special emphasis on cyclone disaster management system of Orissa is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION

Orissa state with immense natural resources is located between 17⁰27’N and 22⁰34’N latitudes and meridians of 81⁰27’E and 87⁰29’E longitudes. Orissa lies on the eastern coast of India with the waters of the Bay of Bengal swirling along its eastern and southeastern boundaries. It shares its boundaries with West Bengal and Jharkhand on the north, Chattisgarh on the west and Andhra Pradesh on the south. Out of the Indian mainland coastline of 7500 km, it constitutes a coastline of about 480 km. It extends for about 155,707 sq.km accounting about 4.74% of the total area of India. According to the 2001 census, it has 3.57 percent of the total population of India. Administratively, it has 30 districts, 3 Revenue Divisions, 58 Sub- Divisions, 51,061 villages and 127 Urban Centers.

Based on physiography, Orissa can be divided into three broad regions - the coastal plains, the middle mountainous region and the plateaus, and rolling up lands. The coastal plains extend from the River Subarnarekha in the north to the River Rushikulya in the south. The coastal zone covers nine districts namely Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Balasore. It is narrow in the north, widest in the middle, narrowest in the Chilika coast and broad in the south. The coastal belt of Orissa lacks hills excepting few hillocks and mounds in the northern and southern parts. It has extensive low lands adjacent to the sea, sloping gently towards the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal. The coastline consists of the lakes, lagoons, marshes, bays and islands and natural harbors. The lakes in Orissa are natural and artificial. One of the blazing example of the natural lake is the Chilika lake.There is only one bay in Orissa which is the Hukitola bay. Eventually there are only two islands in Orissa - the Short’s Islands and the Wheeler Islands. Among the natural harbor, there is only one of its type in Orissa i.e. Paradeep which holds its recognition as the deepest natural port in the whole of India. The main drainage system of this area is represented by several rivers at their old stages flowing sluggishly towards the sea, which form topographic features like peneplains, natural levees, deltas, etc. (Fig.1). The major rivers flowing in the coastal belts are the Subarnarekha, the Budhabalanga, the Baitarani, the Brahmani, the Mahanadi and the Rushikulya. This region is the combination of several deltas of varied sizes and shapes formed by these rivers. The coastal belt has an area of 40,166 sq. km with a population of 68,79,379, which is 45 percent of the population of 9 coastal districts of Orissa.

Severe hot summers during the year 1994 led to excessive melting of glaciers in the higher Himalayas. The exceptional melting contributed enormous amount of melt water to the lake basins, which caused breach of the morainic dam and consequent enlargement of the outlet of the Luggye Tsho and the Tshopda Tsho, Bhutan. Floods followed the breach on October 7, 1994. These floods destabilized the slopes on either bank of the Pho Chhu near Tshopda Tsho outlet making them prone to landslides. The flash floods also eroded the left lateral moraine of the Raphstreng Tsho, which had disturbed the original angle of repose. The Raphstrcng area is also prone to ice avalanches, rock glaciers, surge of which can damage the rim and also cause spillover of water. Examination of geological, geomorphological, geotechnical, microclimatic and hydrographic information in and around the glacial lakes led to improved understanding of breach characteristics based on which mitigation measures were suggested and implemented in the years 1996-97. Since then the lakes have remained intact. From this case study and satisfactory performanceof mitigationmeasures suggest that similar integrated studies have to be conducted for thorough understanding of hazard prone areas based on which mitigation measures have to be implemented for successful reduction of impacts.

INTRODUCTION

The Lunana area, situated in the northern district of Gasa, is one of the most extensively glaciated terrains of Bhutan (Fig. 1). In response to the general global warming, these glaciers like those of other parts of the Himalaya are in a state of steady retreat, often leaving behind a chain of lakes. Though the glacial lakes endow scenic beauty, they also pose environmental hazards, due to frequent bursting of their morainic dams and consequent flash floods. The last lake-burst occurred on 7^th October 1994, leading to floods in the Pho Chhu River. Following floods, the Geological Survey of India in collaboration with the Royal Government of Bhutan, investigated the Lunana area to identify the causes and effects of the floods and suggest remedial measures. More than a decade had passed since the implementation of mitigation measures and there has been no such breach and flood despite continued Glacial Vetreat during to Global Warming. This chapter describes the characteristics of these glacial lakes, nature and results of the study and mitigation efforts.

Nursery management is indeed a very important operation in successful growing of vegetables especially those, which are raised through seedlings in properly managed nursery beds. Raising nursery from seed provides an easy and convenient way to nourish tender young seedlings in a well-managed small and compact area. The nursery area can be conveniently protected from natural hazards, seed borne diseases and insect-pests and can be well managed economically. Some of the vegetable seeds are very costly, for which it is necessary to raise nursery in the most-optimum conditions. In areas where land holdings are small (in hills), nursery raising helps in making economical use of land for about one month and provides enough time to mature for previous crop, harvesting, threshing and land preparation for next crop. Most of the vegetable crops like cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, eggplant, sweet pepper, hot pepper, onion, celery, parsley, lettuce, etc. can successfully be raised through seed by growing them in the nursery and then transplanting in the field.

Nursery can be maintained either for personal or commercial purpose, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Seedlings raised for own planting will be true to type, sound and healthy. The development of such property, as a rule, requires intellectual inputs, ingenuity and innovativeness; it also demands considerable monetary and other resources. Therefore, inventor of an intellectual property would like to ensure at least a fair reward for copied, imitated or reproduced; this minimizes the returns to the original inventor. Intellectual property right recognizes the right of an inventor to derive economic benefits from his invention (i.e. intellectual property); this right is called intellectual property right (IPR), (Singh, 2002). The governments, however, recognize the IPR, only so long as it is not to the detriment of the society. In India, innovation and novel techniques were retained within the families / small social groups that developed them, and there was no other system of protecting their rights to the knowledge so generated. Vegetable seed cleaning and processing are two important aspects of seed post-harvest management. These steps are very essential to maintain the quality of the seed till its next sowing season. The quality of seed produced is dependent on the moisture content and various admixtures. To provide quality seed to farmers, it is very essential to clean seed to its maximum quality. The seed quality attributes like moisture, free water activity, to be controlled in germination, vigor and viability are upgraded during seed cleaning.

Seed cleaning is the term used as a part of processing means separation of admixtures from a particular seed lot. The physical characters like bigger clods, sand, soil, chaffy material, inert matter etc. will be removed during seed cleaning. Seed processing on the other hand is relatively broad term referring to the process of removal of dockage in a seed lot and preparation of seed for marketing is called seed processing. Of late, the importance of integrated study of multi-theme data is being realised in geological mapping and mineral exploration programmes. The usefulness of such a study lies in the fact that data integration and interpretation in a conjunctive mode enables to infer more information than the sets can separately provide. The present paper presents several case studies, illustrating the usefulness of multi-theme data integration in geological mapping and mineral exploration.

1. INTRODUCTION

Integrated study of multi-theme data is being practiced in the recent times in the geological mapping and mineral exploration campaigns. Such a study, in a synergetic fashion, helps to extract more meaningful information than from the study of individual datasets. It not only helps in deciphering regional geological picture, but also in the precise location of drilling targets, thereby yielding rich dividends for the expenditure incurred in the mapping and mineral investigations. Besides, the success ratio of the mineral investigations has also shown a significant increase, resulting in the discovery of more mineral

deposits. Hence the integration of multi-theme data is of paramount importance for the success of geological mapping and mineral investigations.

Phosphorus is present in soil both in inorganic form and organic form. The inorganic P can be divided into different pools. The major active inorganic forms are: P bound to aluminium (Al-P), iron (Fe-P), calcium (Ca-P) and silicate minerals and relatively less active forms are occluded and reductant soluble forms of P. On the other hand, the principal organic P compounds present in soil are (i) inositol phosphate, (ii)phospholipids, (iii)nucleicacid and other unidentified esters and phosphoproteins.

22.1 Determination of Available Soil P

The availability of soil P to plant varies greatly depending upon the reaction, minerological composition and amount of the soil colloid. Very little P is present in the soil solution except in recently fertilized or sodic soils. The type of phosphate ions present in the soil solution depends on the soil pH. In soils of neutral to slightly alkaline pH, HPO₄^2-ion is the dominant form. In slightly or moderately acidic soils, both HPO^-and HPO^2-ions prevail. At strongly acidic soil HPO 244 24 ion tends to dominate, while above pH 9.0, the PO₄^3-ion becomes more important - than H₂PO₄ .

As the P is drawn from soil solution largely through diffusion by the plant, it is replenished from solid phase pool of available P. P fertilizer is added to recharge this pool.

Development of Agriculture in the World and in India

Agricultural ecosystems will increasingly be called on to deliver food and fiber for a demanding and expanding global population. Until recently, increased production relied on expansion of the amount of land under cultivation and irrigation. Since World War II, production advances have relied on genetics and plant breeding, advances in fertilizer and pesticide use and improved cultural management (Matson et al., 1997). Since 1950, agriculture worldwide has expanded cereal production by an average of 2% per annum while population has increased by 1.9% per year (Borlaug and Dowswell, 1994).

Modern science-based agriculture had its beginnings in the late 19^th century with improved traction and tillage equipments. However, it was not until after World War II that the research findings that led to the modern-day productive systems in the United States and later in European and other developed countries. The expansion was directly related to the great demand for food to support the Allied war effort. Knowledge bases developed in plant genetics, physiology and pathology, along with a ten-fold increase in fertilizer use, advances in seed technology, weed control, irrigation and cultural methods allowed the development of the systems that dominate agriculture in many of the countries today. Corn or maize responded dramatically to the advances in production technology. Maize yield in the United States has increased more than 300 per cent over the past 50 years and continues to rise. Maize production technology has been delivered worldwide (Borlaug and Dowswell, 1994).

The terms antioxidants and free radicals are being very effective used nutritionists and other health professionals. Antioxidants are compounds are good for health and free radicals are harmful. In general, antioxidants neutralize free radicals that are generated in the body and prevent damage to cell proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Antioxidants can be water-soluble or lipid-soluble, thus they exist within the lipid or within the water portion of cells. Antioxidants are substances when present in food or in body at low concentration retards or prevents undesirable oxidation of substrates by free radicals.

Within the human body, millions of processes are occurring at all times. All cells require oxygen to generate energy; higher eukaryotic organisms cannot exist without oxygen. Unfortunately, that same life giving oxygen can create harmful side effects which cause cell damage and lead to chronic disease. Damage caused by free radicals is called oxidation. Indian agriculture is characterized by small farm holdings. The average per capita land holding is speculated to squeeze to 0.10 ha by 2050. The proportion of marginal holdings is to swell more due to the growing population, inheritance laws of division of land and diversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural purposes. But we need around 457 Mt food grains to feed our nation by 2050 as against the present level production of about 257 Mt. Significant changes are also taking place in domestic and international demand for crop products due to improvement in income and standard of living, fast urbanization, and changing life styles and food preference patterns. The food demand is projected to grow annually at 2.0 % for cereals as against 3-4 % for edible oils and pulses, 4-5% for milk and milk products, meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, sugar and gur. In contrast, association of emerging problems like declining per capita land availability, increasing nutritional insecurity, decrease in factor productivity, increasing risk with individual farm component, unsustainability of cropping systems and unwillingness of young farmers towards farming lead to an apprehension in achieving the target. Farming system which aims at long term productivity, profitability, recycling of resources and employment generation, comes out as a major strategy to tackle all such problems. In farming system, various components of farming are integrated based on the cardinal principles of minimizing the competition and maximizing the complementarity between the enterprises so as to improve productivity and profitability as well as resource conservation along with maintenance of the environment. A survey conducted by the AICRP on Integrated Farming Systems indicates existence of 19 predominant farming systems with majority (85%) as crop + livestock (Gangwar and Ravisankar, 2014). Crop dominant farming systems are existing in most of the states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, North-East, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal while livestock dominant systems, are present in Rajasthan and Parts of Gujarat. West Bengal, parts of Odisha and Assam states have the fisheries as a major source of income to the existing farming systems. The scope for promotion of horticulture (fruit) based systems exists in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, parts of Uttar Pradesh and in Sikkim while plantation dominant systems, are available in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala. Further, the contribution of crop and livestock to gross income of existing farming systems in 732 marginal households in 30 districts of 20 states in various NARP zones of India indicates that in majority of the place crop component contributes more than 50 % while at few districts such as Samba (Jammu), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Mehsana and Panchmahal (Gujarat), livestock component contributes either equally or more. Thus cropping systems play a pivotal role in most of the farming systems of India.

Mechanization of agriculture is essential for optimal utilization of vital inputs for crop production system such as soil, water, seed, fertilizer, pesticide and labour force leading to higher productivity and reduced cost of production for greater profitability. Thus with the support of mechanization, the agrarian sector as an enterprise needs to become sustainable and economically competitive which coincides with the objectives of the Integrated farming System concept. Mechanization also imparts capacity to the farmers to carry out farm operations with dignity, comfort and freedom from drudgery, making the farming agreeable vocation for educated rural youth as well. It helps the farmers to achieve timeliness and precisely meter and apply costly input for better efficacy and achieve higher productivity with reduced application of inputs. Small and marginal farmers now make use of high capacity agricultural machines on custom hire basis to enjoy the economic benefits. As such, the broad subject of agriculture can be understood as production agriculture, which takes care the field operations in the crop production system for higher productivity and post production agriculture, better known as post harvest technology which looks for reducing the loss of produce and value addition for economic gains. The IFS outlines the need of sustainability for farmers with limited resources of land, water and economy while mechanization aims at maximizing the profitability in agricultural system with a commercial attitude. Since the availability of labour force during peak hours of need and hike in wage very often creates hindrance in production and post production agriculture, mechanization can be the right answer to harness the benefits of IFS approach.

Commercialization is essential for agricultural development, which, amongst other things, entails mechanization of agriculture to reduce the cost of production and to increase the yield of crops. In some instances, agricultural commercialization may take place even without mechanization. However, due to the ever increasing agricultural labor scarcity in developing countries, an extensive scale agricultural commercialization may not be possible without mechanization.

The various farm operations involved in crop production system are land leveling, tillage for seed bed preparation, sowing and planting, weeding and interculture, spraying, harvesting and threshing. The mechanization of all these operation has been appreciated by the farmers which are discussed in the following paragraphs.

I. ROLE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

The international community has set itself the target of reducing the proportion of people below poverty line to half by 2015, along with associated specific targets for improving health and education and environmental sustainability. The Millennium Development Goals, adopted at various international fora, recognize the crucial importance of reducing poverty and hunger, improving health and education, and ensuring environmental sustainability. It is important to know whether and how intellectual property rights (IPRs) could play a role in helping the world meet these targets — in particular by reducing poverty, helping to combat diseases, enhancing access to education and contributing to sustainable development, protecting our cultural heritage, safeguarding the food security for the country. It is also necessary to deliberate whether and how they create obstacles to meeting those targets and, if so, how those obstacles can be removed.

There are strong views from both sides on the protection and enforcement of IPRs though there is no data to check these views objectively. Some argue strongly that IPRs are necessary to stimulate economic growth, which in turn, helps in poverty reduction. By stimulating invention and new technologies, IPRs help to increase agricultural or industrial production, promote domestic and foreign investment, facilitate technology transfer and improve the availability of medicines necessary to combat diseases. They are also of the view that there is no reason why a system that has worked for developed countries would not work for developing countries. Others argue equally vehemently the opposite. IPRs do little to stimulate invention in developing countries, because the necessary human and technical capacity may be absent there. In assessing these opposing arguments, it is important to remember the technological disparity between developed and developing countries as a group. What role the intellectual property can play to plug this gap is a serious subject for every developing nation? For this, it is also pertinent to know about the IPRs, the challenges they pose to the legal system in general and to the Indian legal system in particular, and their basic rationale to take a considered approach in their implementation.
