I. INTRODUCTION

Procedural remedies for the infringement of one’s right are not enough by themselves unless they result in some reliefs of substantive nature whereby it can reasonably be said that these reliefs, temporary or permanent, as the case may be, are enough in the circumstance to make good or, say, compensate the genuine loss of the aggrieved party to an infringement suit. The substantive remedies available to a successful plaintiff at any stage in any suit for patent infringement could, however, be derived from the express as well as by necessary implication of the provisions of the Patents Act, 1970 dealing with the “Reliefs in suit for infringement”. Its Sec. 108 declares in terms quoted below:

John H. Davis of Harvard University first used the term agribusiness in 1955. In 1980s it was given three connotations: (1) synonymous with term agriculture, (2) synonymous with agricultural economics and (3) a modified concept of agriculture, excluding farming, or the off-farm aspects of agriculture.

Agribusiness is defined as all business enterprises or sells to farmers/traders/consumers. The transaction may involve either an input or a produce or service and encompasses items such as:

• Productive resources (feed, seed, fertilizer, equipment, energy, pesticides, machinery, etc.)
• Agricultural commodities –(raw and processed commodities of food and fiber)
• Facilitative services (credit, insurance, marketing, storage, processing, transportation, packing, distribution, consultancy, soil testing etc.).

The Internet is a worldwide network of networks connecting millions of users, spread across continents, exchanging thousands of gigabytes of information, accessing numerous databases that cover everything from cooking to astronomy, all relatively inexpensively. The Internet offers virtually unlimited amounts of information related to animal medicine and provides all the tools to access it. ‘www’ is probably the most famous three letters of the last century, signifying a series of servers that are interconnected with each other through hypertext transfer protocol or ‘http’. A significant part of the credit for increasing the popularity of the Internet belongs to the World Wide Web. It is always better to use evaluated web resources as the quality of websites is a problem in cyberspace.

Domestication of animals was followed by the provision of shelters for protection which also modified the climate to suit the species housed for improving the productivity and reproductive efficiency. Climate is the long term average condition of the meteorological variables in a given region. The climate is divided into macro climate and micro climate. Macro climate is the general large scale climatic conditions of the open atmosphere in a large area. Micro-climate is the climatic conditions directly surrounding the animal or the physical environment in the immediate vicinity of the animal. The environment includes all the combination of conditions under which the animal lives. The immediate variables that affect the production and reproduction of animals are its micro climatic variables. The animals have requirements of their own. The environment influences where and how animal lives. Domestication has resulted in man dictating where and how animal lives. Thus breeds of livestock evolved in temperate regions have been introduced into tropical area with high rainfall, humidity and temperatures. Homeotherms are a group of animals which maintain their deep body temperature essentially constant. All the domestic animals are homeotherms. In the case of an inert body, basic thermodynamic forces establishes an equilibrium in which the body attains the same temperature of the surrounding environment. The same law applies to homeothermic animals also. Therefore, these animals will have to make compensatory physiological and behavioural adjustments to keep a constant deep-body temperature. While digestion of food takes place in the body of animals, a portion of the energy in the feed is converted into heat. This metabolic heat plus the heat gained from the environment through conduction, convection and radiation results in excess heat gain to the animal, which has to be dissipated, if heat balance is to be maintained. For this the animal depends on various physiological and behavioural functions. This balancing act by which a constant normal core temperature is maintained is known as homeothermy. Heat production is regulated by hormonal secretions, changes in muscle tone, shivering and by voluntary muscular activity. Heat loss is controlled by vasodialatation, increasing the cutaneous circulation and evaporative loss. The animal reduces its feed intake as well as production, drink more water. In long term the hair coat becomes lighter with less insulation. The animal will also exhibit postural changes and behavioural adjustments. They will try to increase surface area, reduce physical activity and seek shade.

Abstract

Landslides are the most common hazards in hilly regions. Rapid development and the resultant uncontrolled interactions with ecosystems are the major reasons for the landslides, besides the rainfall. So, the assessment of landslides hazard vulnerability is a prerequisite before making any developments related to settlements, hill resorts, hydropower projects and the related network of Ghat roads. The present study deals with the assessment of landslides in two different sites; Site-1 located in the Ghat section of Yercaud hills between 10/4 and 29/6 km stones in the southwestern slopes of Shevroy hills, Salem, and the Site-2 located in the Ghat road between Lower camp and Kumuli in Theni districts, Tamil Nadu. The Theni ghat road in the National Highway-220 is connecting Tamil Nadu with Kerala and is the lifeline for Sabarimala, Tekkadi and Munnar. Besides, a series of pan stacks conveying water from Periyar reservoir in Kerala to the power house located at Lower camp in Tamil Nadu also lie in this stretch of hills. Landslide vulnerability mapping was carried out in an area of 130sq.km in Site-1 and 6.7 sq.km in Site-2 by assigning numerical values to the causative factors of slope instability such as lithology, structure, slope morphometery, relative relief, land use and land cover, and ground water conditions following the BIS code No. 14496 (1998) for preparing landslide hazard zonation maps. The study in Yercaud hills revealed that out of 12 slope facets, facet 1 to 6, 9 and 12 fall under moderate landslide hazard zone whereas facets 7, 8, 10, and 11 fall under high hazard zone. The area falling in facets 3, 4 and 5 of Kumuli ghat section fall under high landslide hazard zone, the slope facets 1, 2, 9 and 10 fall in the moderate hazardous zone and other facets in low hazardous zone.

Abstract

The state of Nagaland located in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent is also prone to landslides similar to the other north eastern states due to the softer lithologies, intense deformation and extensive anthropogenic activities. So in order to understand the landslide vulnerability and to evolve remedial measures, a 12 km stretch of the NH-2 from Kohima town in the south to Zhadima junction in the north was studied. The study comprises the preparation of landslide hazard zonation map using BIS method and detailed studies in six major landslides involving RMR, SMR and Kinematic analysis and also the suitable remedial measures for such landslide phenomenon.

Abstract

Due to fragile lithology belonging to Disang and Barail groups of the Cretaceous-Tertiary period, intensive structural deformation related to collision tectonics, extensive weathering and the anthropogenic activities in the form of slope cutting for the development and widening of roads lead to frequent landslides in the state of Manipur, India. In this connection, the road section between Tengnoupal and Sita has been studied to understand the landslides vulnerability and to evolve mitigation strategies. The study involved the Petrochemical analysis to elucidate the weathering potential of the rocks, kinematic analysis to understand the network of joints and the strain, slope stability analysis to prepare Land Hazard Zonation mapping and estimation of factors of safety in selected locations. On the basis of these studies, long & short term remedial measures were suggested to mitigate the landslide hazards.

Abstract

The present study deals with the slope instability analysis of a vulnerable stretch of 16 km between Pratapgarh road intersection and Mahabaleshwar town, which is a part of the state highway-72, Satara district, Maharashtra, India. The highway remains closed during the monsoon seasons, due to the recurrent instances of cut slope failures. So the present research work was conducted with an aim to study the reasons, extent and mechanism of the cut slope failures along the road sections as well as optimization of tools for the assessment of road cut stability of the area. The 16 km stretch was divided into seven vulnerable sections (M1; near Mahabaleshwar - M7; near Poladpur) based on the geological, geometrical and structural attributes. The slope forming mass primarily consists of laterite, weathered basalt and fresh jointed basalt, which are interbedded with red bole at some sections. Limit equilibrium, finite difference and finite element simulation were performed for seven cut slope sections, using similar geometries and material strength attributes for all the analyzing techniques. The assessment was carried out for both dry and saturated conditions to emulate the monsoons. The factor of safety yielded through the limit equilibrium method was the most conservative of all the tools; while the finite element method gave the least conservative figures in terms of factors of safety, being close to the field observations, the safety factor results of finite difference methods were between the limit equilibrium and finite element methods. The cut slope sections composed of weathered basalts and laterites (M1, M2, M3, M6) were found most vulnerable to failure during rains, while the sections composed of fresh jointed basalts (M4 & M5), though overall stable, are susceptible to planar and wedge failures.

8.1 Introduction

After deciding the optimum size of farm pond and its dimensions, the next step begins the construction of farm pond. Further the site selection and location of the pond in the selected site to be finished before the construction of pond starts. The selection of site and location of farm pond areas have been discussed in Chapter 3. In this chapter, discussion on methodologies for construction of farm pond including spillways, inlet and outlet structures, design of grassed waterways and embankment have been presented. As a guiding principle, the construction of farm pond involves the following steps:

8.2 Site Clearing

The area where the pond is to be constructed has to be inspected first. The site where pond has to be dug out should be cleared to an extent of about 10 m from all sides of top dimensions of the pond. All bushes, shrubs, stumps and other unwanted materials should be dug out and removed. If there are roots of plants, they should be uprooted. The land may be ploughed and harrowed, if necessary, to get a more or less even topography.

4.1 From Soil

Soil contains varied group of microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes, algae and protozoa. The type of nutrients available, moisture, temperature and pH of the soil determine the nature of microbial population in soil. Different laboratory techniques for isolation of microorganisms have been detailed in chapter-III. These are used in particular for the isolation of specific type of microorganisms. All the techniques adopted are just to segregate the pathogens/ microorganisms from the mixture of microbial population present in nature.

(a) Isolation of Fungi

Soil contains large number of fungi and constitutes a major place of microbial population. They can be isolated in pure form by following the methods given below:

Generally microorganisms are so small and colourless in their natural state that it becomes difficult to observe them clearly under microscope. Stains and dyes, which are colouring agents, are used by biologist for better understanding of the morphological and anatomical structures of the organisms under study. Stains are prepared with great care and specification to get satisfactory result, while dyes are not as exacting in their characteristics.

Dyes are of two types, natural and synthetic. The natural dyes are used for histological purposes, whereas the synthetic dyes for bacterial stain. Usually dyes which are derivatives of cyclic compound benzene of benzole, are prepared from one or more substances found in coal-tar, and so are called coal-tar dyes. Chemically dyes are organic compounds containing both chromophore and auxochrome groups linked to benzene rings. Chromophore group provides the compounds the property of colour and thus benzene containing chromophores are called chromogens. It has no affinity to combine with fibres or tissue and as such not called dye. For being a dye, compound should contain an auxillary group which provides the compounds the properties of electrolytic dissociation.

The dyes may be acidic, basic or neutral. The acidic dyes are eosin, acid fuchsine and picric acid whereas the basic dyes are safranin, methylene blue, crystal violet etc. The acidic dyes ionize to give the dye portion of molecule a negative electrical charge. They are salts of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium etc. The basic dyes ionize to give the dye portion of molecule a positive electrical charge and are salts of chlorides, sulphates or acetates.

Introduction

Farming system is complicated inter-related with soil, plants, animals, implements, power, labour, capital and alternative inputs controlled partly by farming families and influenced to varied degrees by political, economic, institutional and social forces that operate at several levels. The farm is viewed during a holistic manner. The farmers are subjected to several socio-economic, biophysical, institutional, body and technological constraints. Farming system conceptually may be a set of components or parts that are reticulate that act amongst themselves. At the centre of the interaction is that the farmer exercise management and selection concerning the sort and results of interaction. It’s the human setting that gives ample condition for development and utilization of a specific system. A farming system clearly is incredibly complicated system. Therefore, any agricultural technology compatible to a specific agroecological state of affairs and socio-economic environment might not be adopted by alternative farmers. Unless each natural and human environment is thought-about, agricultural analysis won’t end in relevant agricultural technology. The income from cropping alone in tiny and marginal farms is hardly ample to sustain the farmers’ family. With the decline in farm size (0.15 ha) because of explosion of population, it’d be more and more tough to provide enough food for the family by the tip of the century. Therefore, the farmer, to be assured of an everyday income for a good living (above the poverty line), a considered mixture of anybody or additional of those enterprises with agronomic crops ought to complement the farm income and facilitate in usage the farm residue/waste. The choice of enterprises should be supported the cardinal principle of minimizing the competition and maximizing the complementarily between the enterprises.

Introduction

Species of Polygonatum, traditional known for their therapeutic properties for treating different ailments,are fairly well represented in temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia, America and Europe and find use. In India, P. cirrhifolium, and P. verticillatum are the two important constituting species of Ashtavarga, but have attained a threatened status due to overexploitation. Of the 60 odd known species of the genus, less than 10 have been explored phyto-chemically. Their status varies species wise, at regional and global level.

14.1 Introduction

Proteins are the substances formed from nitrogen containing amino acids and are principle structural components of body tissues and muscle. In addition, they are used to produce various hormones, enzymes and hemoglobin in human body. Due to the shift from agricultural to electronics and other fast paying industrial development, most of the countries around the world, ceased to be self-sufficient in their food production in particular protein, which is necessary to satisfy their optimum food demands. The biotechnology development and its usage to agriculture have brought hope to them. The need for food by modernization of agriculture has gained much attention throughout the world. However, the necessity for exploring unconventional and non-agricultural means of food production, especially of proteins rich food, cannot be over-emphasized due to the tremendous growth of human populations in several regions of the world. In addition to this, the importance of protein in food nutrient cannot be put aside because its shortage causes various malnutrition problems and the most lethal malnutrition problem is Protein-Energy-Malnutrition (PEM). The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012. There are 925 million people undernourished in developed countries (FAO October, 2010). This situation has created a demand for the formulation of innovative and alternative proteinaceous food sources having high nutritional value. These sources have to be non-competitive with food for human consumption, economically feasible and locally available. This demands a search for new protein sources, with high nutritional value, economically feasible and locally available. Use of microbes as a food source is one of the biotechnological innovations that will certainly increase the availability of affordable protein in the world to solve the global food and feed problems.

In recent decades there has been an increased interest in the industrial production of microbiological protein for use in both human and animal nutrition. The main reason behind it is that there has been the shortage of low cost protein sources in view of the increasing human population and living standards, resulting in famine in some parts of the world and increased demand for animal protein in others.

Abstract

Multiflash drying (MFD) process is based on the application of multiple cycles of heatingvacuum pulse to a solid food. Heat can be provided by convection (from hot air), conduction (by contact with a hot surface), microwaves, or by a combination of these methods. Due to the moderate temperatures applied to the drying food, and the sudden decompression step (vacuum pulse), MFD processes allow obtaining crispyanddried foods with very good nutritional and sensory properties. Vacuum pulses cause food texturization, which depends on the pressure drop rate during decompression. In fact, the dried products are similar to freezedried foods, but with more open structures, which result in higher crispness. The dehydration can be performed in relatively short processing times, when compared with traditional drying processes (e.g. solar drying, airdrying, vacuum drying and freezedrying). The short process time indicates clearly that this class of drying process presents a huge potential to the production of driedandcrisp foods at industrial scale.

Grasshoppers are highly voracious herbivores having the world wide distribution. It is particularly found across — Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. In India it may be seen in abundance during monsoon season. This pest is of International importance and the following three species are commonly found in India of which desert grasshopper is predominant all over the country.

India has achieved a commendable position of being the highest milk producing country in the world. Nearly 110 million tons of milk per annum is contributed by small and marginal farmers having 2-3 milch animals which are scattered in lakhs of villages across the length and breath of India. The poor socio-economic conditions are serious constraints in producing raw milk of good quality. The quality of milk is further deteriorated during subsequent handling and transportation. Milk being a product of biological origin, is extremely vulnerable to attack by microbes. It is also a good vehicle for additives and adulterants without any apparent changes in its appearance. Thus, milk is susceptible to several post-secretion changes, some natural and some man-made.

Indian dairy industry faces a mammoth task to meet the world quality standards, particularly in the present context of globalization and increasing quality conscious consumers. In view of the highly perishable nature of milk soon after it is secreted, it is important to monitor its quality by having a firmly installed quality assurance programme along the entire production-to-supply chain. This can be possible with application of sensitive, accurate and rapid methodologies as a tool in quality assurance programmes.

Quality comprises of several attributes ranging from physical, chemical, technological and bacteriological through nutritional to aesthetic. All dairy plants have a quality assurance laboratory (Fig. 8.1) and usually follow chemical quality control with the intention of payments to contractors/producers, processing of milk and meeting mandatory requirements for end products. Quality is judged both by objective and subjective tests.

The original divisions of the class insecta are a matter of dispute and it is not easy to decide which division to use many, different original order and groups are recognised by different experts and which one is best will no doubt remain problem. The words taxonomy, systematics and classification have been used alternatively for the same subject by various scientists. However Simpson 1964 has attempted to segregate these. According to him classification is the order of animals into groups on the basis of their relationship that is association of contiguity similarity or both. Systematic is the scientific study of the kinds and diversity of organism and of any and all relationships among them, while taxonomy is the theoretical study of classification including its bases, principal procedures and rule. All animal species are segregated into small and large groups on the basis of their comparative similarities and dissimilarities. The largest group is called phyllum as followed by class, order, family, genus-species and sub-species respectively. The Phylum, class, order, genus, species etc. The division of class insecta into primitive wingless insects, the apterygota and the secondary winged-insects the pterygota and included some orders. The class insecta may be divided into two subclasses.

Most of the plants undergo a period of rest, and in this period, the growth activities temporarily halt. The whole plant looses its aerial parts and undergoes a rest period in the form of rhizome, corm, or tuber. Researchers who study fruit trees use the term rest for dormancy (Samish, 1954). This period is sometimes called as quiescence. The term rest and quiescence can be included under common category dormancy. Some workers differentiate the term dormancy and rest period (Burton, 1964). Wareing and Co-workers (Robinson and Wareing, 1964; Wareing et al., 1964) isolated dormancy inducing substance in sycamore seedlings (Acer pseudoplatanus) which was named as dormin. Further, analysis of this substance by Cornforth et al. (1965) reveals that dormin was identical to Abscisin-II (a substance speeding the abscission of the young flowers of Lupinus luteus and have antiauxin effect).

Dormancy can be defined as an arrest in development of buds, seeds, embryos, or spores under conditions otherwise suited for growth (Taylorson and Hendricks, 1977). It is a survival strategy (exhibited by many plant species), which enables them to survive in climates where part of the year such as winter or dry seasons is unsuitable for growth. The dormancy may be due to the factors within the dormant organ or seed itself and it is called spontaneous dormancy. This type of dormancy is found in seeds, buds and perenating organs like tubers, bulbs, bulbils, corms and rhizomes. In some weeds, dormancy is caused by high or low temperature and this type of dormancy is called as imposed dormancy. Seeds normally germinate in darkness but are inhibited by light are considered to become dormant after exposure to light (Bewley and Black, 1982; 1985). Seeds that require light for germination are said to be photo dormant.

Vegetables form an important component of our daily diet as they provide necessary nutrients to the diet and they add colour, texture and flavour to it. Vegetables contain very high content of water (about 78 to 98%) and are reasonably good source of starch, sugar, cellulose, hemicellulose, pentosans and pectic substances. They also contribute minerals, vitamins and indigestible fibers to our diet. The yellow, orange and dark green leafy vegetables are rich source of carotenes- the precursors of vitamin A. Non-volatile acids, such as citric, malic, oxalic and succinic acids, contribute to their flavour. The very strong flavour characteristics of some vegetables like onion, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, etc. are due to certain sulfur containing volatile compounds. However, vegetables, in general, are poor source of protein and amino acids.

India has made significant progress in the production of vegetables since independence because its diverse agro-climatic zones ranging from tropical to temperate allow the production of a wide spectrum of vegetables.At present, the country is producing about 108 million tonnes of vegetables and considered the second largest producer in the world (Venkatesan et al., 2006). Currently, the plant breeders are focusing their efforts to produce high yielding varieties having resistance against diseases and herbicides and tolerance against drought and salinity. Therefore, the physical aspects of quality, i.e., shape, size, texture, colour, tenderness, etc. are given due priority in the breeding programme with no emphasis to the biochemical and nutritional quality parameters, which include dry matter, proteins, vitamins, sugars, flavouring compounds, alkaloids, flavonoids, etc. However, under present set up of World Trade Organization (WTO), the country will have to compete with quality conscious European and developed countries, and with inferior quality product, it would not be possible to penetrate the foreign market. Therefore, breeding programme in a country like India with future-plans of globalization of agriculture produce must be aimed at achieving good nutritional quality. In different types of vegetable, a varied set of biochemical parameters determines the quality. In this chapter, the methods for qualitative and quantitative determination of these parameters in vegetables have been described.

Introduction

Agricultural soils harbour a rich variety of nematode fauna, where they coexist with a myriad of other microorganisms. It has been estimated that one cubic meter soil of highly fertile field may contain as many as 3×10¹⁴ bacterial cells (300 g), 5×10⁸ protozoa (39 g), 1×10⁷ nematodes (12 g) and fungi (400 g), besides other organisms. The nemic fauna comprises of free-living (saprophagous and microbivorous), predatory forms and plant parasites (phytophagous). In addition, certain animal and insect parasitic forms may spend a part of their life cycle in soil. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) exist in poly-specific communities and attack all types of plants- cultivated or wild. They possess a needle-like stylet or spear at their anterior end, which is used to puncture the plant cells and ingest the cell contents. Majority of PPNs dwell in soil and draw their nutrition from plant roots. Only a few forms attack the above ground plant parts such as stem, leaves, inflorescence and seeds. PPNs may be ectoparasites (feed from outside and do not enter plant tissues) or endoparasites (enter inside the plant tissues). The endoparasites spend a part of their life cycle in soil or may come out into the soil to re-infect the other roots. These may be further categorized into migratory or sedentary types. The migratory forms keep on moving, feeding and laying eggs that are scattered in soil or plant tissues. The sedentary nematodes are more harmful and a particular stage of their life cycle infects the plant and establishes a feeding site by modifying plant tissues by their enzymatic secretions. The females of sedentary nematodes usually attain swollen shapes upon maturity and lay hundreds of eggs in clusters.

Plant parasitic nematodes are ubiquitous, and so far, more than 1800 species have been recorded. They are obligate parasites and must feed upon plant hosts, thus, debilitating the plants to some extent. The extent of direct damage by the nematodes to plants depends on several factors viz., nematode density in soil, nature of parasitism (ectoparasite or endoparasite), host susceptibility, cropping pattern, edaphic factors (mainly soil texture and moisture) and ambient climatic conditions (like temperature and relative humidity). Nematodes, by themselves, rarely kill the plants to ensure their own survival. Nematodes also inflict considerable indirect damage to crops by interacting with other plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria and viruses) to cause disease complexes in which nematodes act as incitants, aggravators, or vectors.

Landscape models focus on both the integrated master landscape planning of a home gardening and specific garden design. The people should be educated to realize the importance of gardening, by providing good parks and gardens in cities for a large population to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The plants used in the landscape designing of gardens are directly or indirectly involved in increasing the aesthetic value of the city, changing microclimate, social behaviour of the people, checking pollution etc. The importance of landscape gardening in human welfare cannot be overlooked. Even in an under-developed country as India, people do not live by bread alone. They also need some finer things of life. The models described in this chapter are very basic features of any garden.

Garden Walls

A garden lover will never like to block the view of his garden by putting a wall along periphery of the garden. A garden as it is enjoyed from inside should also be visible from outside but sometimes, it is necessary from safety and beauty point of view to obscure the ugly sight of an open drain. A compromise is to have a low brick wall of say 60-90 cm height and to put over it some grills, so that the view is not totally obstructed from outside. Alternatively, walls from 1.80 to 5.0 m may also be erected based upon the size of the garden.

Abstract

A key problem in spatial-mathematical-model-based mineral potential mapping is the selection of appropriate functions that can effectively approximate the complex relationship between target mineral deposits and recognition criteria. This paper evaluates a series of spatial mathematical models based on different linear and non-linear functions by applying them to base-metal potential mapping of the Aravalli province, western India. Linear models applied are an extended weights-of-evidence model and a hybrid fuzzy weights-of-evidence model, while non-linear models are knowledge and data-driven fuzzy models, a neural network model, a hybrid neuro-fuzzy model and an augmented naive Bayesian classifier model. The parameters of the knowledge-driven fuzzy model are estimated from the expert knowledge, while those of the neural network and Bayesian classifier model are estimated from the data. The two hybrid models use both expert knowledge and data for parameter estimation.

As compared to the linear models, the non-linear models generally perform better in predicting the known base-metal deposits in the study area. Although the linear models do not fit the data as efficiently as the non-linear models, they are easier to implement using basic GIS functionalities and their parameters are more amenable to geoscientific interpretation. In addition, the linear models are less susceptible to the curse of dimensionality as compared to non-linear models, which makes them more suitable for applications to mineral potential mapping of the areas where there is a paucity of training mineral deposits. The hybrid models that conjunctively use both knowledge and data for parameter estimation generally perform better than purely knowledge-driven or purely data-driven models.

Abstract

As part of the Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) project, an Enterprise-wide Geographic Information System has been implemented through which Intranet / Internet users enjoying different access levels can quickly search for, locate and visualize geoscientific information generated by Geological Survey of India (GSI). The proposed system will provide real-time response to information needs and will use secure Internet technology to deliver information to bonafide users. It consists of an application that will enable data owners to load new data sets, update/replace existing data sets in a highly secure environment, load and maintain metadata about their data sets in a Data Catalog and a subsystem that will query, search, locate and display geoinformation stored in the centralized Geodatabase.

Enterprise GIS has been deployed primarily using a relational database, a spatial database engine tool, an Internet Map server tool, and integrating the existing ArcGIS desktop GIS clients. The approach is to import data from distributed data sources into the centralized repository using a customized extraction-transformation-loading (ETL) tool, thereby making appropriate structural changes to ensure homogeneity at various levels, and load into the main Geodatabase.

While delineating the functionalities of enterprise GIS solution an earnest attempt was made to accommodate the diverse needs of the organization, including its processes, activities, products and the whole gamut of users at different levels from the field geologist to the decision makers. An effort was also made to standardize various data automation processes and to iron out the heterogeneities existing in legacy data. Ultimately, GSI aspires to create a seamless geospatial database for the entire geographic extent of the country, which can be easily shared by the geoscientific community.

Fats are rich sources of energy. Fats provide 2.25 times more available enrgy than carbohydrates. Fats also increase the palatability and reduce the dustiness of feed. Fats and fatty acids decrease the heat increment in the body. Fatty acids are also involved in number of physiological functions of the body. Recently, considerable interest has been shown on studies pertaining to dietary supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in animal feed and their role in animal health and production.

Phytobiotics are plant derivatives such as herbs, plant extracts or spices and have a wide range of activities such as stimulation of feed intake, growth and endogenous secretions in the gut. They act as immunomodulators resulting in decreased mortality and also have coccidiostatic, anti microbial, anthelminthic and anti-inf lammatory activities. Phytobiotics also possess hepatoprotective and hepatogenic properties, which tone up liver resulting in increased nutrient utilization and better performance. Herbs like Achyranthes aspera (Prickly Chaff Flower, Devil’s Horsewhip, Apamarga), Andrographis paniculata (Green chirayta, King of bitters, Kalamegha), Azadirachta indica (Neem), Boerhaavia diffusa (Spreading Hogweed, Punarnava), Eclipta alba (False Daisy, Bhringaraj), Ichnocarpus frutescens (Black creeper, Utpalagopa), Terminalia chebula (Black myrobalan, Haritaki). These herbs have hepatostimulant, hepato-protective, immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities (Sadekar et al., 1998; Manu and Kuttan, 2009; Michels et al., 2011, Dash et al., 2007). Further, they optimize digestion and metabolism resulting in better protein utilization, improved mucosal function and reduced cost of metabolic deamination. Andrographolide and 14-deoxy-11, 12-didehydro-andrographolide isolated from Andrographis paniculata inhibits free radical activities and lipid peroxidation. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation in meat prevents free radical production thereby preserving meat composition, colour and improvement in shelf life. In addition, it has been studied that a herb Terminalia chebula helps to reduce stress (Selvakumar et al., 2007).

Introduction

Seeds are regarded as carriers of new technology and serve as basic catalytic input for enhancing the agricultural production. Hence the timely availability of quality seeds of the right variety in adequate quantity decides the strength of an agricultural economy. The intensive crop improvement programmes have resulted in the development of large number of hybrids and high yielding varieties in many important crops. Today, the Indian seed industry is the fifth largest seed market in the world, accounting for 4.4 per cent of global seed market. In terms of global trade, India is almost self-sufficient in flower, fruits and vegetables and field crops seeds (Anonymous, 2015). Economy of crops depends on good crop variety. Farmers choose these verities based on good quality traits and satisfactory yield. Thus, it is always essential to do fidelity check of all plant variety. The genetic purity is one of the most important aspects of quality control. Seed quality includes good germination, purity, seed health and vigour. With the increase in seed industry, there has been a refinement in the techniques used for testing genetic purity or genuineness of seed purity. Methods for testing genetic purity include different morphological, chemical, biochemical and molecular markers. Under PPV & FR Act, DUS (distinctiveness, uniformity, stability) testing procedure is performed with morphological descriptors. However, in agriculture, biotechnology has found applications in checking of true to type of clones and variety identification programs using molecular and chemical markers. Markers that reveal polymorphisms at the protein level are known as biochemical markers, while DNA markers reveal polymorphisms at the DNA level.

“Hydrology is the science that treats the waters of the earth, their occurrence, circulation and distribution, their chemical and physical properties, and their reaction with their environment, including their relation with living things. The domain of hydrology embraces the full life history of water on the earth.” (Federal Council for Science and Technology, “Scientific Hydrology”, Washington, 1962)

This definition puts in a nutshell what is most often inadequately done before undertaking exploitation of water resources. In short, it is the scientific inputs that are likely to be missed while planning water resources management projects. It is the “full life history of water” part of the above definition that is of specific relevance to the theme of this book, Isotope Hydrology.

Conventional hydrology is strong on measurement and quantification of different parts of the hydrological cycle (Fig.1.1), be it precipitation, run-off, evaporation, transpiration, infiltration, groundwater dynamics etc. Through chemistry and isotopes, we try to understand the processes themselves in order to delineate the history of that part of the hydrological cycle that is being studied. For example, if we are measuring river flow, we would like to know the contribution of different components; base flow, rainfall run-off and snow melt, if any.

Let’s see what we know and what do not know in the conventional hydrological practice. We know surface waters evaporate, form into clouds and precipitation occurs under favourable weather conditions. What we often do not know is the source of moisture, oceanic or inland.

ABSTRACT

Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub, knownas ’Flameof the Forest’is used in Indian traditional system of medicine, such as Siddha Ayurveda, and Unani due to its medicinal properties. It is used in treatment of diabetes, diarrhoea, sore throat and reported to possess several biological activities such as anti-asthmatic, anti-diabetic, antifertility, anti-tumor and osteogenic. Recent studies revealed the phytochemicals responsible for osteogenic activity in the bark of B. monosperma. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for identification and simultaneous quantitation of bioactive compounds from B. monosperma. Validation of the developed method was performed according to international conference on harmonization guidelines. Quantitative interpretation showed significant variations in the content of bioactive compounds in different parts of the plant and samples collected from three geographical regions. Principal component analysis was also used to study the quantitative variations of markers.

ABSTRACT

The present communication deals with the impact and contribution on livelihood sustainability based on forest resources and sacred places in nine fringe villages of Pangolakha Wild Life Sanctuary (PWLS), located in Sikkim Himalaya. Populations density in villages varies from 23 at Nayabusty and 274 at Padamchen. Populations were categorised under three age groups viz. minor (15-25 yrs), major (26-36 yrs) and elder (over 36 years). Approximate by 27.6% populations had minimal primary education. Agriculture is the main activity in Suvaneydara (86.7%), Agamlok (85.3%) and in Nayabustyy (82.3%). Villagers in Padamchen (12.5%) and in Nathang (12.5%) are either dependent on Government job (38.2%) or seasonal flow of tourist (25%). The educational qualification in these villages is classes 5 to 10 standards. 91.1% of people rely on forest resources. About 70% of the villagers depicts that forest cover of the region is improving. The availability of fodders (70%) and fuel woods (60%) are still in abundance. People depend on tirja (private), khashmal and goucharan areas for grazing and fuel wood collection. Forty nine economical economically by valued plant species belonging to 46 genera and 35 families were documented. Subtropical ecosystems had high number of plant species. Poaceae was the dominant family (17%). Tree life form is abundant (51%). Total 24 species are harvested for edible purpose, 24% are freely sold in the local haats (market) for their livelihood sustenance. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of nine villages with respect to forest resources indicated the village specific use pattern of plant resources. Indigenous inherent knowledge of local plants is decreasing in Lingtam. PWLS and its adjoining villages have important places with religious importance, heritage sites managed by the people. It was observed that exploitation of plant resources, lack of maintenance and fast changing concept of traditional ethics among youths, plant resources were degraded and in regenerating stage.

1. Introduction

Viruses are a unique group of infectious agents. They are distinct in their simple, acellular organization; however, they are the connecting link between live and dead. Viruses are also the perfect example of obligate intracellular parasitism. Despite their simplicity, plant viruses are extremely important and drawn attention of researches because they can be used as model to study the disease establishment and progression mechanism, reproduction inside the host and trilateral host-virus-vector relationships. Their small genome also gave liberty to extensively understand the genome evolution caused by the genetic exchange or recombination. As a consequence, this will help in the development of facile methods for management and control of new emerging viruses and their strains.

This chapter is written for the beginners and students of virology subject to provide the fundamental knowledge about the origin, history of plant virology, the general features of plant viruses, their structure, shape and size, mode of spread and development of their management strategies. Besides this, the new development of non-conventional methods for developing virus-resistance in plants has also been explained for enhancing the quality and production of commercial crops in the country.

Plants are used for many purposes apart from food such as industrial products like perfumes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, food additives, cosmetics and also for rectifying the side effects of allopathic medicines, etc. Interest was taken in the chemical constituents of plants in the very early days of modern science. Plants were used for very many purposes besides providing food, such as for treating medical ailments and for dyeing in textiles.

To the agricultural chemists, any biological organism is ultimately constituted from the elements like C, H, O, N, P, Ca, Mg, S etc. Two or more elements combine to form complex organic compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, enzymes, alkaloids, glycosides, organic acids and many more complex compounds. These biomolecules can be classified into two main major metabolites. (1) Primary metabolites and (2) Secondary metabolites.

6.1 Introduction

All separation procedures depend mainly on some physical characteristics of the compounds. It is relatively easy to separate compounds that have significantly different physical characteristics by simple techniques such as solvent extraction. If the various compounds are similar to each other in their molecular size, any slight difference in any one of their physical properties is exploited to achieve separation. The separation and purification of plant constituents is mainly carried out using one or other, or a combination of chromatographic techniques: Paper Chromatography (PC), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Column Chromatography (CC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPTLC), Optimum Performance Laminar Chromatography (OPLC), Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). One further technique, which has fairly wide application in phytochemistry, is electrophoresis.

Food packaging is an essential technique for preserving food quality and minimizing food wastage. It is a scientific technique of containing food against physical, chemical and microbiological contaminants. In addition package also display the product in most appropriate manner and provide product information to the consumers while at the same time allowing convenient handling and efficient distribution. The packaging of meat and meat products are particularly important because meat is highly nutritious food and provides good medium for the growth of micro-organisms. Meat and meat products are also susceptible to bacterial growth due to their high water activity. Exposure of meat and meat products on atmospheric temperature and sunlight leads to various types of deteriorative changes. For example when cut meat surfaces exposed to ambient air provide excellent breeding grounds for most bacteria. Minced meat is even more at risk due to the large exposed surface area. Packaging provides protection of food against external and internal factors but once food gets deteriorated it can not be controlled by packaging. For this reason rigorous hygiene in all processing and pre-packaging steps is vital for packaging of perishable food items like meat and meat products.

Sun is the prime source of energy injected into the earth’s atmosphere. The sun is the nearest star to the earth. It is a hot ball of glowing gases at the heart of the solar system. Its radiant energy is practically the only energy source to the earth. Very small and insignificant quantities of energy are available from other sources such as the interior of the earth, the moon, and other stars. Without the sun’s intense energy and heat, there would be no life on earth.

The mean distance of the sun from the earth, also known as one astronomical unit (1 AU), is approximately 1.496 × 10⁸ km, though the distance varies as the earth revolves round the sun in an elliptical orbit. At this average distance, light travels from the sun to earth in about 8 minutes and 19 seconds. The energy of the sunlight supports almost all life on earth by photosynthesis, and drives earth’s climate and weather. The minimum sun-earth distance is about 0.983 AU and the maximum is approximately 1.017 AU. The earth is at its closest point to the sun (perihelion) on around January 3 and at its farthest point (aphelion) on around July 4.

The sun makes up about 99.86% of the mass of the entire solar system. The visible disk or photosphere has a radius of 6.599 × 10⁵ km, and the solar mass is 1.989 × 10³⁰ kg. The sun is a completely gaseous body. The chemical composition (by mass) of the outer layers of sun is 71 per cent hydrogen, 26.5 per cent helium, and 2.5 per cent heavier elements like oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron among others. Since the sun is not a solid body, different parts of the sun rotate at different rates. At the equator, the sun spins once about every 25 earth days, but at its poles the sun rotates once on its axis every 36 days.

Temperature is the physical property of an object that quantitatively expresses the hotness or coldness. Objects of low temperature are cold, while various degrees of higher temperatures are referred to as warm or hot. When a heat transfer path between them is open, heat spontaneously flows from bodies of a higher temperature to bodies of lower temperature. If no net heat flow occurs between two objects, the objects have the same temperature which are then said to be in ‘thermal equilibrium’. Temperature plays an important role in all fields of natural and applied sciences. Most of the weather parameters are dependent on it, directly or indirectly. It has important role to play in the development and growth of all living organisms in all stages of their growth.

Atmosphere receives the heat energy from the sun and its temperature increases. Due to different amount of heat energy receipt at different places, the air temperatures at different places also vary. The variation in air temperature basically results into air motion, so as to equalise the energy content of the different regions of the earth. Thus, atmospheric temperature is one of the basic elements of weather and climate.

In general, any business directly involved in food production can be certified, including seed suppliers, farmers, food processors, retailers and restaurants. Requirements vary from country to country, and generally involve a set of production standards for growing, storage, processing, packaging and shipping organic certification ensures:

• Avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. Fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, etc) and genetically modified organisms;
• Use of farmland that has been free from chemicals for a number of years (often, three or more);
• Keeping detailed written production and sales records (audit trail);
• Maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products and
• Undergoing periodical on-site inspections.

In some countries, certification is overseen by the government, and commercial use of the term organic is legally restricted. Certified organic producers are also subject to the same agricultural, food safety and other government regulations that apply to non-certified producers.

Abstract: Gerberas are popular seed and vegetatively propagated flower crop with numerous phenotypes, series and cultivars available on the world market. Crop improvement is currently focused on bicoloured mini gerbera, semi-double and spider type forms, and hybrid cultivars with expanded colour range to boost productivity and profitability. Application of genetic engineering techniques and tools are aiding in modern gerbera breeding. The need for new cultivars remains strong as production system become more specialized and new markets develop. Breeding objectives with high priority include cut flower cultivars highly resistant to diseases, tolerant to low temperature, and floral longevity.

Abstract: Water lily, bulbous ornamental, constitute element of aquatic gardens. A variety of flower colour, flower forms, modes of reproduction and leaf sizes exist in Nymphaea. This species is a complex hybrid group. A wide range of polyploidy (including aneuploidy, trisomy, polysomaty), polymorphism and heterozygosity exists within the cultivars of water lily. Genetic information and trait heritability is almost unknown for this crop. Breeders have created synthetic water lily hybrids. Low fecundity, limited fertility, reproductive barriers, low seed set, relatively low elemental (founding) species among elite germplasm often pose significant challenges to flower breeders. Breeding objectives with high priority include tolerance to drought, year round flowering and lower seed tannins. Future breeding and genetic studies are needed to further transform this crop.

Seed yield is the foremost important attribute and is the end product of many complex component characters which singly or jointly influence the seed yield. Seed yield does not possess gene per se as such. It is the interaction phenotype of the harmonious understanding, mutual adjustment and manifestation of its component characters. As most of the component characters are polygenic, they are greatly influenced by the environment. So, the selection of genotypes based on yield as such is not likely to be effective. The information on the strength and direction of association of the component characters with seed yield and also among themselves will be very useful in formulating an effective breeding programme for seed yield improvement in a given time. Correlation studies provide about the magnitude and direction of genetic association between the seed yield and its component characters.

Correlation coefficients provide the measure of association between two characters. But, they do not provide the causal basis of such association. Further, correlation between seed yield and its component characters are often misleading due to the inter-relationship that exist among the component characters and the operation of size symmetry and component compensation that thwart the breeding progress. The direct contribution of each component to the seed yield and the indirect effects it has through its association with other components cannot be differentiated from mere correlation studies. This is how, it became necessary for a plant breeder to have information on the direct and indirect effects of these components on the seed yield to identify the key characters for improvement.

Abstracts

To ensure safe food and adequate sanitation programs, the equipment used for processing of food products must be designed, fabricated, constructed, and installed according to sound hygienic design principles. This ensures the equipment can be adequately cleaned and sanitized, and that surfaces are resistant to daily exposure to corrosive food products and cleaning/sanitizing chemicals. This chapter focuses primarily on fundamental principles of hygienic design, which protect the product from microbial, chemical, and foreign-body contamination. This is followed by a discussion of general aspects of hygienic construction and design of food equipments, the selection of materials of construction and specification of surface finishes, fabrication, installation and cleaning and sanitization. Quality of raw materials or foods ingredients, proper processing, packaging and storage of finished products decides the quality of the food products. Planning for plant and equipment layout, its design, services (water, air, refrigeration, steam), waste disposal etc. are some of the critical factors, which contributes to quality. In addition, the food processing equipment must comply with strict standards and regulations, which are necessary for securing the quality and safety of the food products to the consumers.

9.1 Introduction

Solar energy can be directly converted into electrical energy through photovoltaic route. Energy conversion devices which are used to convert sun light into electricity by use of the photovoltaic effect are called solar cells. The advantages of solar cells are:

1. They are reliable, convenient and durable.
2. It is green, sustainable and pollution free technology.
3. Directly solar radiation can be converted into electricity (conversion of global solar light by flat plate photovoltaic).
4. Maintenance cost is quite low therefore suitable even in isolated and remote area, since no moving parts are involved.
5. Solar cells are quite compatible with almost all environments, respond instantaneously with solar radiation.
6. Considerable expected lifetime i.e. 20 years or even more.
7. No distribution system is required, because they are decentralized source of energy and located at the place of use.

INTRODUCTION

Fish culture as a hobby or business is well established in India. Increased interest in fish culture has also increased awareness and experience with parasites that affect fish health, growth, and survival. Information provided in this chapter is intended for the novice fish culturist as a guide to common parasites of freshwater fish. Identification of parasites and their basic treatment is included; however, any herbal treatment alone or biological cum chemical treatment may be choosen for eradication purpose (Das et al., 1995a).

PREVENTION

This section will discuss ailments that affect the fish kept in our aquariums. We will simply not call them diseases because most are not true diseases but a response to some sort of stimuli such as poor tank water management or the presence of actual parasites. A list of the most common ailments, the reasons behind them and the appropriate action needed to “fix” the problem is given in this Chapter.

If you maintain good water quality, keep the right kind of fish together, feed good quality food and monitor all your water properties you will rarely have any problems. A few common sense precautions when you purchase new fish can save you a lot of trouble.

Phosphorus in soil present both in inorganic form and organic form. The inorganic P can be divided into different pools. The major active inorganic forms are: P bound to aluminium (Al-P), iron (Fe-P), calcium (Ca-P) and silicate minerals and relatively less active forms are occluded and reductant soluble forms of P. On the other hand the principal organic P compounds present in soil are (i) inositol phosphate, (ii) phospholipids, (iii) nucleic acid and other unidentified esters and phosphoproteins.

15.1. Determination of Available Soil P

The availability of soil P to plant varies greatly depending upon the reaction, minerological composition and amount of the soil colloid. Very little P is present in the soil solution except in recently fertilized or sodic soils. The type of phosphate ions present in the soil solution depends on the soil pH. In soils of neutral to slightly alkaline pH, HPO₄^2- ion is the dominant form. In slightly or moderately acidic soils, both H₂PO₄^- and HPO₄^2- ions prevail. At strongly acidic soil H₂PO₄^- ion tends to dominate, while above pH 9.0, the PO₄^3- ion becomes more important than H₂PO₄^-.

8.0. Introduction

Food additives are the substances not normally consumed as a food by itself and contain or not contain nutritive value but are added to food to improve freshness, sensory and keeping quality of food. So, a food additive is defined as a substance or a mixture of substances other than the food stuff incorporated in food either directly or indirectly as a result of any phase of production, processing, storage or packaging to improve or maintain the nutritional value, enhance quality, consumer acceptability and facilitate the preparation of materials e.g., acid, alkali, bleaching agents, emulsifying & sterilizing agents, flavours, colours, nutrient supplements, clarifying agents, humectants, chemical preservatives etc. Every food available in the market or at home contains food additives. So, now the question arises that whether additives are safe from consumption/toxicological point of view or not? What are the facts or fictions, if additives are to be used in the food preparation? These are the most important questions to be answered and discussed before their use in food industry.

Introduction

Food being the foremost basic need gets the priority in expenditure of people, especially poor class. Access to food demands affordability, which depends upon the twin factors namely, income of the people and prices prevailing in the country. Slower growth in income than prices would undermine the purchasing power, resulting in inadequate access to food and calorie consumption. Foodgrains account for about four-fifth of the calorie intake of the poor and an increase in cereal prices could significantly reduce the calorie intake of the poor, as it is sensitive to cereal prices.

Introduction

Geostatistics is a branch of statistics that deals with the analysis and modelling of geo-referenced data. Its main aims are to quantify spatial variability and to create maps from point observations. Of course there is much more to geostatistics than just that and indeed some of the other uses of geostatistics are addressed in this chapter too, but the emphasis is on the assessment of spatial variability and geostatistical interpolation.

The first step of geostatistical interpolation is to quantify the spatial correlation structure of the variable of interest. This can be done by examining the observations and how these vary in space. Next spatial interpolation makes use of the quantified spatial correlation to derive optimal predictions at unobserved locations and create a map. The interpolation error is quantified as well, which helps to design optimal spatial sampling schemes that balance data collection costs and map accuracy. All this will be explained in this chapter, but in order to do so we first need to explain the statistical theory that underlies geostatistical interpolation followed by representation of the spatial correlation structure, the basics of geostatistical interpolation (‘kriging’), kriging extensions and spatial stochastic simulation.

Crop protection research has brought out tangible and effective methods to suppress various pests in major agro-ecosystems. Indigenous knowledge in this regard has been tested and validated for its suitability.

Among the 137 Phytophthora isolates collected from bud rot/fruit rot affected coconut gardens in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, four isolates from bud rot affected gardens were identified as P. nicotianae and one as P. capsici. Since, P. nicotianae is found associated with bud rot disease of coconut in three districts representing three states, it is expected that this may emerge as a major pathogen of coconut. Further, placing Trichoderma coir pith cake in the innermost leaf axils of coconut palm in disease endemic areas just before the onset of southwest monsoon (May-end) and thereafter at two months interval was found to be very effective in the management of bud rot disease of coconut.

Guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.], internationally known as guar, is extremely drought hardy, deep rooted, summer annual legume of great economic and adaptive significance. Virtues of guar effectively match with low and erratic rainfall pattern and high ambient temperature habitats of arid regions. The crop may thrive very well in rainfall range of 250-450 mm with 3-4 spells, temperature range of 25-40°C, RH values of 50-65%, longer days with 8-9 hr sunshine, particularly at maturity. Guar is ideally suited to light to medium textured soils, with no water logging conditions. The crop tolerates less inputs and restricted after care, matching with the arid farmers’ livelihood conditions. It is grown for grain, vegetable, fodder, cattle feed and green manure purposes, mainly in rainfed habitats of Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and to some extent in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. This crop has recently been introduced in non-traditional regions of Annantpur, Kadappa and Chittoor dry region of Andhra Pradesh. Only duringcurrent summer season of 2012, guar has been successfully cultivated with 4-5 irrigations in parts of Chattirgarh and Vidarbha and in non traditional summer seasons of Rajasthan. The cultivation in non-traditional regions and seasons have increased possibility of two crops in rainy and summer seasons. Even though, guar is cultivated on marginal lands, with marginal inputs in these regions, yet it has occupied the status of international, export oriented cash crop. The same has been due to presence of natural polysaccharide galactomannan gum content in seed endosperm. The gum content has wide industrial uses. Almost 80-85% guar gum produced in India is exported and rest is used for inland commercial demands. Of late, increasing demands of guar gum for USA alone to the tune of 5.0 lakh tonnes annually has led to sky rocketing prices resulting in economic benefit of Rs. 1.0 lakh to 1.5 lakh/ha in 90-100 days only. Hence, guar is rated as a source for providing livelihood security to arid farmers in practical reference. Relevant information on guar have been provided in this chapter.
