It is well known that lowering the temperature of food stuffs reduces microbiological and biochemical spoilage and thus extending the shelf life of the product. In addition, it is generally agreed upon that the reaction rate is reduced by half by lowering the temperature by 10°C. Though low temperature preservation process has been recognized as a preservation technique for several hundred years, the major developments in its utilization have occurred only in the last century.

1. Introduction

Refrigeration may be defined as the process of achieving and maintaining a temperature below that of the surroundings. The aim being to cool some product or space to the required temperature. Refrigerated system or a room system is maintained at a temperature which is lower than the atmospheric temperature. Due to higher temperature of atmosphere, heat enters the system. To keep the temperature of the system constant, heat must be removed continuously from the system. Heat removed must be equal to the heat transferred to the system. One of the most important applications of refrigeration has been the preservation of perishable food products by storing them at low temperatures. Refrigeration systems are also used extensively for providing thermal comfort to human beings by means of air conditioning.

The refrigerator (called a ‘fridge’ by most people) is a box like equipment which uses electricity to keep the temperature inside the box lower than the atmosphere outside. Food kept at such a low temperature thus does not spoil for a long time. The refrigerator also serves the purpose of giving us cold water and ice in summer. By preserving food in the refrigerator, one can delay the growth of bacteria, keep food items fresh and thus save time and energy of the homemaker in meal preparation.

Agriculture is increasingly being looked through the angle of environment and sustainability now. On global scale, the move is towards a balanced need for food production and ecological factors. Green revolution made a huge contribution for food security but now we face the following challenges.
1. Since the green revolution, land has witnessed an indiscriminate and prolonged use of chemicals and the strong need for moving away to more eco-friendly farming is felt.
2. We need to promote eco technologies which integrate the principles of ecology in technology development and dissemination. We also need to promote production and use of biological software for sustainable agriculture and food security.
Therefore, the terms like Regenerative Agriculture, Nature base solutions, Agro Ecology, Eco Agriculture, Conservation Agriculture, Organic Farming, Holistic Resource Management, Climate Smart Agriculture, Prakrutik Kheti etc etc have been gaining prominence in policy and funding spaces related to food systems. Global policy floors like the UN Food Systems Summit and the UN Climate and biodiversity conferences have used these terms as bywords for Sustainable Development. Different Names – Eco Agriculture Revolution Encompasses all ! Regenerative Agriculture is defined by many in ways that closely resemble Agro Ecology / Eco Agriculture. Broadly it describes farming, ranching and pastoral practices that stabilize our planet’s climate and carbon cycles by rehabilitating organic matter and microbial activity in the soil, thereby increasing carbon storage, retaining moisture and safeguarding bio diversity and living systems.

Soil regeneration is about bulding or making topsoil. It is a particular form of ecological regeneration within the field of restoration ecology is the act/idea of replenishingthe top soil with beneficial nutrients casing natural methods. Time required from inorganic to organic would be about 60 to 200 days depending upon the situation. Once the inorganic fertilization is stopped, following actions facilitate quick conversion:

• Apply Farm yard/Poultry manure available in the farm as a basal dressing.
• Sow 25 kg of multi varietal seeds (MVS) in one acre.
• Allow it to grow up to 60 days.
• Inoculate the soil with the bio-agents like Azospirillum, Phosphobacterium, Pseudomonas flouresens, Trichoderma viride on 30 days after sowing (DAS).

Historic Cities Of India: Description And Its Classification

At this stage it is vital to take a look at ‘historic’ cities of our country with a view of better understanding, it is important to understand the basic components that constitute a historic city. Can we arrive at the number of such cities presently in India.

In the absence of an official definition of a ‘historic city’, it is hazardous to answer the above question in terms of a specific number. The census of India does define ‘urban area’ but does not venture to define historic cities. This approach involves using advanced technologies, such as precision agriculture and data analytics, to monitor and manage farm operations in real-time, enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions and respond quickly to emerging challenges. The benefits of regenerative agriculture are numerous. Not only can it improve crop yields and promote sustainable agricultural practices, but it can also enhance ecosystem services, support biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. By adopting regenerative agriculture practices, farmers can play a critical role in creating a more sustainable food system, one that prioritizes the health of both people and the planet .

Soil fertility is a key factor in successful crop production measures the ability of the soil to supply nutrients to plants. Soil fertility and fertilisers are closely related concepts. Soil fertility acts as a "SOURCE" from which plants can absorb nutrients for maximum yield, while manure acts as a "SOURCE" from which we can continuously absorb various nutrients and also add to the soil. The importance of soil fertility and fertiliser management has been increasingly recognised in all countries to meet the demand for food and other agricultural commodities. Intensive use of fertilisers and cultivation of high yielding varieties has undoubtedly increased food production and reduced food scarcity, but it has also brought with it a host of problems related to soil fertility, soil and water pollution (Sow et al., 2023a). On the other hand, rapid depletion of nutrients due to overuse, widespread N, P, K, and S deficiency, along with micronutrient deficiencies, especially Zn and Boron, have been observed in many soils.

ABSTRACT

The upper Agniar and Vellar river basins principally consist of three major rock typesnamely pink granite, gneiss and charnockite. The major geochemical pattern of these igneous rocks when studied indicate that charnockites have a trend of low Mg2+ and high Ca2+ + Na O to high K+ end, whereas the same is vice – versa for hornblende biotite gneiss and also for granite gneiss. The pink granite has an intermediate trend between the charnockite and hornblende biotite gneiss. The value of SiO2 in all the rock types was found to increase with the increase of K2O, Na2O and Al2O3. Further, a decrease in the values of MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2 and CaO was noticed with an increase in SiO2. On the basis of the distribution pattern of these elements, the origin of the igneous suites in the above two basins was inferred.

Consider, for instance, the colossal impact of the Tibetan Plateau’s summer heating on the Indian Summer Monsoon. The intense solar radiation absorbed by this vast elevated landmass creates a powerful upper-level heat source, driving a strong low-pressure system that acts like a vacuum, pulling in the moistureladen winds from the Indian Ocean that deliver the life-sustaining rains to the subcontinent. Similarly, in North America, the development of the North American Monsoon Anticyclone, a large high-pressure system aloft, plays a crucial role in steering moisture from both the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico into the arid Southwest, transforming parched landscapes into vibrant green during the summer months. Furthermore, the chapter will examine the regional oceanic influence of the Indian Ocean Dipole and how the temperature differences between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean can significantly modulate the strength and distribution of rainfall during the Indian monsoon and in neighboring regions. Through a series of regional case studies, this chapter will illuminate the diverse ways in which local geography, land surface characteristics, and regional atmospheric and oceanic circulations act as critical modifiers of global monsoon patterns. This detailed exploration underscores the necessity of understanding these regional nuances for accurate forecasting, effective water resource management, and the development of tailored strategies to cope with the inherent variability of monsoons in different parts of our planet.

In Article IX of IPPC, it is stated that RPPOs shall

• Function as coordinating bodies in the areas covered by the IPPC (including information sharing)
• Cooperate with the IPPC Secretariat in achieving the objectives of the IPPC (including the development of ISPMs)
• Cooperate with other RPPOs and participate in the regular Technical Consultations for RPPOs that are convened by the IPPC Secretariat

At present, there are 10 RPPOs covering the different regions of the world. Each RPPO has its own independent statutes and conducts its own regional cooperation programme. RPPOs produce regional standards for their members. They cooperate with each other and with the IPPC Secretariat. In particular, they meet in Technical Consultations to promote the development and use of relevant ISPMs and to encourage inter-regional cooperation on phytosanitary measures for controlling quarantine pests and preventing their introduction and spread.

Register in general is recording of an event, transaction of stock and stores, money etc., and collectively it is aggregation of data. The farm will have lot of static and dynamic information and collection and recording all these information and storing the same is called register maintenance. Register maintenance is not a one time job, it is continuous process. Some of the registers will record the basic physical information and some other will record the financial transactions like expenditure, income etc. Maintenance of register with economics is more critical, because they decide profitability and economic efficiency of the farm. Registers are always associated with various activities carried out in a farm.

There are different crop specific societies in different countries for registering new varieties. This does not provide any intellectual property right. It serves as a documental proof of new variety, author, mode of origin, place and date. For example, there is The American Rose Society which serves as the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Roses; The Royal Horticultural Society, International Registration Authority for the genus Dahlia; Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi -110 012, India for Bougainvillea. Each society either follows the rules set forth by the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants or they are having their own rules and regulations for registration (Anonymous 1981, Choudhury 1973, Singh 1983, 1986, 1987, 1999, Singh et al., 1999, Sindhu 2015, Singh 2007). Newly evolved Bougainvilleas are being registered by the Division of Vegetable Crops and Floriculture, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, since 1966. A check list of all the existing important cultivars based on the available information from literature as well as from amateurs, professional traders and other sources from different countries are available.

An animal disease is an economic process in the farming system, as it consumes a considerable amount of scarce economic resources that would have been otherwise productively utilized by the animals and results in negative benefits to society. Hence, while measuring the losses attributable to animal diseases, the manifestation of such losses and the factors influencing such losses may also be identified, which require modelling the ways by which the negative effects of the diseases are exhibited. A description of such models and their procedures is essential to understand the comprehensive effects of diseases. We will list and describe such models and tools in this chapter.

11.1 CORRELATION ANALYSIS

While simple descriptive statistical tools are adequate to estimate the economic effects of animal diseases, these tools cannot measure the nature and strength of the relationships between two or more variables. However, the statistical knowledge can effectively be used to understand Various statistical measures studied so far, like measures of central tendency and dispersion and skewness, relate to one variable only. However, there are many situations where there are several problems involving the use of two or more variables. Although correlation analysis is only a bivariate technique like t-test, ANOVA, and Chi square test, we will briefly see about correlation in this chapter, as it is also a part of multivariate analysis. The first step is to determine which bivariate analytical tool we need to adopt to test the study hypothesis.

Ubiquinone is the point in which reactions can proceed in different ways, and it is called the branch point. Cyt respiratory pathway is present in all living organisms. It proceeds while complex III pulls out a proton from the mitochondrial matrix to the inter membrane space. The electrons are received by cytochrome c which spreads up to the outer side of the inner membrane towards protein complex IV, which then pulls out another proton similar to complexes I and III, and transports the electrons back to inner domain of the mitochondria. As a result, oxygen is consumed with a proton and the two electrons to produce water (Fig 1).

Nanoscience and nanotechnologies are set to transform the global industrial landscape, but the debate on how to regulate environmental, health and safety risks is lagging behind technological innovation. Current regulatory efforts are primarily focused on the national and regional level, while the international dimensions of nanotechnology governance are still poorly understood and rarely feature on the international agenda. With the ongoing globalization of nanosciences and the rapid expansion of international trade in nanomaterials, however, demand for international coordination and harmonization of regulatory approaches is set to increase. However, uncertainty about nanotechnology risk poses a profound dilemma for regulators and policy-makers. Uncertainty both creates demand for and stands in the way of greater international cooperation and harmonization of regulatory approaches. Falkner Robert and Jaspers Nico (2012) reviewed the emerging debate on nanotechnology risk and regulatory approaches, investigates the current state of international cooperation and outlines the critical contribution that a global governance approach can make to the safe development of nanotechnologies.

Nanotechnology is a rapidly expanding branch of science that has a critical role to play in raising the standard of living for people in the modern world. The global market for nanotechnology in food packaging is valued at 20 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to 46.50 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.32% from 2024 to 2031 (InsightAce Analytic, 2023). The rapid expansion of nanotechnology has paved the way for number of industrial areas, including food processing, food contact materials, and agricultural output (Mohammadi & Jafari, 2021). Nanotechnology is the fastest-growing field of science that significantly enhances the quality of life in today's world. This rapid advancement has opened up numerous industrial sectors, such as food processing, food contact materials, and agricultural production. A natural advancement is the integration of nanotechnology into food packaging. This includes enhanced packaging, active packaging, and a new category known as smart or intelligent packaging. Food contact materials, such as antimicrobial metals and oxides, biodegradable nanocomposites, and nanosensors, are utilized to create active and intelligent packaging. These materials enhance thermal and mechanical durability, increase safety and extend the shelf life of food, and facilitate the monitoring of packaged food (Kah et al., 2013). At the nanoscale, material properties change significantly, making it challenging to predict, identify, evaluate, and manage the health, safety, and environmental risks associated with nanomaterials. For example, nanoparticles (NPs) of 50 nm can enter cells, those of 70 nm can penetrate the lungs, and 30 nm NPs can cross blood-brain barriers.

Over time, liposomes have become incredibly versatile in their ability to transport drugs, biomolecules, and gene therapies. This groundbreaking approach has not only enhanced the effectiveness of treatments but also minimized side effects by precisely targeting specific sites within the body (Lai et al., 2024). Liposomes are vesicular structures composed of one or more concentric lipid bilayers that enclose an aqueous core. Hydrophilic drugs are commonly found within the aqueous compartments, whereas hydrophobic drugs are incorporated into the lipid bilayers. The innovative design of this architecture enables flexible drug encapsulation and precise delivery to specific targets. Liposomes have a wide range of applications in medical science, going beyond drug delivery to encompass diagnostics and vaccines. This versatility greatly enhances their value in the field (Gupta et al., 2023).
An important milestone in liposomal delivery technology occurred in 1995 with the approval of Doxil, which was the first-ever liposomal drug delivery system. Since then, there have been notable advancements in improving the physicochemical properties of liposomal formulations. Although there have been advancements in this field, it is important to remember that the core principles established during Doxil’s approval are still relevant for all liposomal delivery systems. These principles encompass the importance of stability, achieving optimal drug release kinetics, and ensuring biocompatibility and safety (Barenholz, 2012; Wang et al., 2022).
First and foremost, stability is of utmost importance. It is crucial to ensure that liposomal formulations remain intact throughout storage and administration in order to maintain the integrity of the drug and avoid problems such as leakage or degradation. The stability of liposomes can be affected by various factors, including the lipid composition, preparation method, and storage conditions. Ensuring stability necessitates the implementation of advanced manufacturing processes and rigorous quality control measures (Liu et al., 2022).
In addition, it is crucial to achieve the ideal drug release kinetics. Striking the perfect balance between sustained release and efficient delivery to the target site is crucial for optimizing therapeutic benefits and minimizing any potential adverse effects. Designing liposomes to release their payload in a controlled manner, customized to the pharmacokinetics of the encapsulated drug, is a crucial aspect of this process. Optimizing factors like liposome size, surface charge, and the inclusion of targeting ligands can greatly enhance the release profile (Pande, 2024).
Furthermore, ensuring biocompatibility and safety is of utmost importance. It is crucial to conduct comprehensive safety evaluations to ensure that liposomal systems do not trigger immune responses or lead to any adverse reactions. Total production of nano-materials is expected to increase considerably in the near future. Nanotoxicology is yet another emerging field of science dealing with the effects of nano-devices and engineered nano-particles on living organisms. With the constant upsurge in the food wastage at different stages of processing (suchas harvest, storage, processing, transportation, and distribution) leads to more than 15% of food produced ending up in the dumping grounds due to food spoilage caused by climatic conditions andmicroorganisms.Ever-increasing demands of consumers for convenient food makes packaging technology a need of the hour in order to keep the food safe, wholesome and of high quality at the same time.

So appropriate packaging has the potential of not only preventing spoilage but also taking care of healthand well-being of the individuals.Therefore, packaging plays the most important role in the overall safety of the food product.This makes packaging as the ever-evolving field since new requirements need new materials which demands new approaches and technology for better quality products.

By definition, Food packaging is a well-organized system of protecting the food product from any kind of physical, chemical, and biological damage in order to ensure that food reaches the consumer in its most safe condition at minimum applicable cost. It is bridge between production and consumption (Paine, 1992).

Abstract
Aquaculture has emerged as a key solution for meeting the rising global demand for aquatic food products, contributing significantly to food security. This chapter explores the role of regulatory frameworks in mitigating climate impacts, promoting sustainability, and enhancing resilience in aquaculture. It emphasizes the importance of integrating aquaculture into national and global climate adaptation plans, adopting ecosystem-based approaches, and fostering innovative practices like integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and cultivating climate-resilient species. The chapter highlights the need for advanced tools, such as climate monitoring systems and genetic advancements, to mitigate risks while ensuring resource efficiency and productivity. Addressing barriers like complex governance structures and limited resource access is essential for effective policy implementation, particularly in vulnerable regions. This guidance explains when a botanical drug may be marketed under an over-the-counter (OTC) drug monograph and when FDA approval of a new drug application (NDA) is needed. In addition, this document provides guidance to sponsors on submitting investigational new drug applications (INDs) for botanical drug products, including those botanical products (or botanicals) currently lawfully marketed as foods and dietary supplements in the United States. This guidance also discusses several areas in which, because of the unique nature of botanicals, FDA finds it appropriate to apply regulatory policies that differ from those applied to synthetic, semisynthetic, or otherwise highly purified or chemically modified drugs (including antibiotics). In particular, the guidance states that applicants may submit reduced documentation of preclinical safety and of chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) to support an IND for initial clinical studies of botanicals that have been legally marketed in the United States as dietary supplements or cosmetics without any known safety concerns.

I. CHALLENGES TO CYBERSPACE

The problems and prospects of copyright and information technology need to be deliberated in the context of present day jurisprudence. The subject is referable to the extensive use of information technology all over the world which has resulted in enhanced efficiency, effectiveness and optimum use of resources. The copyright law is concerned with the negative right of preventing copying of the physical material in the field of literature and arts. Trade and Merchandise Marks Act protects the patent, trade mark and design giving the registered proprietor an exclusive right to the registered material. The prohibition contained in rights in patent and copyright extend to the unauthorised manufacture or reproduction, so long as the exclusive right rests. Copyright has been held to be not the mere creature of the statute but a natural and civil right. The moral basis of the copyright is that the man is entitled to the fruits of its mental faculties as much as he is entitled to the fruits of his mechanical labour. The law rests on the English Commandment - thou shall not steal. It does not permit one man to make a profit and appropriate himself what has been produced by the labour, skill and capital of another. Blackstone in his commentaries Vol.II at page p.406 has stated:

There is still another aspect of property and this is the right which an author may be supposed to have in his own original literary compositions: so that no other person without his leave may publish or make profit of the copies. When a man by the exertion of his rational powers has produced an original work, he seems to have clearly a right to dispose of that identical work as he pleases and any attempt to vary the disposition he has made to it appears to be an invasion of that right.

INTRODUCTION

The current food crisis has put the agriculture production on a tight leash, not allowing the producers any lassitude whatsoever. Even though we have outgrown from our ‘ship to mouth existence’; our least negligence can torpedo our efforts to maintain the steady state of progress achieved in food grain production. Around 35% of what is produced is lost due to pest and diseases. In this situation, plant protection assumes significance. Unfortunately our plant protection regime begins and ends with pesticides. It is the default option in the plant protection menu and all the other options more or less remain defunct and unused. Even though, our major thrust areas of plant protection are promotion of Integrated Pest Management: ensuring availability of safe and quality pesticides for sustaining food production from the ravages of pests and diseases, streamlining the quarantine measures for accelerating the introduction of new high yielding crop varieties, besides eliminating the chances of entry of exotic pests; we remain largely insulated from these aspects in IPM.

With the Globolization and liberalization in International trade of plants and plant material in the wake of Sanitary and Phytosanitory (SPS) Agreement under WTO, the plant quarantine measures have become more imperative. Liberalization of trade policies have helped the world agriculture trade to prosper which is key sector for many countries like India whose economies are dependent on agrarian industry. But the likehood of the presence of disease/pest inherent in the import material can very well geopardize the trade. Activities are meant to help agricultural development and Plant quarantine service are charged with the responsibility of preventing the entry of hazardous pests, pathogens and weeds, but to deny entry of valuable genetic re-sources would be against national interest. These activities are meant to help agricultural development and they are complementary to each other and therefore are necessary, and we on our parts need to be fairly vigilant. As has been very truly said-An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Plant Quarantine
The term ‘Quarantine’ is derived from the Latin word quarantum, meaning 40. It refers to the 40 days period of detention of ships from countries with bubonic plague and cholera in the Middle Ages. The first such quarantine was imposed in Venice in 1374.Present quarantine laws now include plants. Plant quarantine , restrict entry of plants, plant products, soil, cultures of living organisms, packing materials, and commodities, as well as their containers and means of conveyance to protect agriculture and the environment from avoidable damage by hazardous organisms.They exclude dangerous organisms while permitting plants and plant products to enter. The term exclusion convey this objective more clearly than plant quarantine. Exclusion relates to keeping organisms out; plant quarantine relates to keeping plants out.
In strict sense ‘Plant Quarantine’ refers to the holding of plants in isolation until they are believed to be healthy. Now, broader meaning of the plant quarantine covers all aspects of the regulation of the movement of living plants, living plant parts/plant products between politically defined territories or ecologically distinct parts of them. Intermediate quarantine and post entry quarantine are used respectively to denote the detention of plants in isolationfor inspection during or after arrival at their final destination.

This shift is driven by the emergence of cutting-edge technologies and the adoption of the 3Rs principle (replace, reduce, refine) which emphasizes animal welfare.Routine in vitro safety screeningalong with GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and non-GLP toxicity testing follow regulatory frameworks established by agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), ICH (International Council for Harmonization)and EMA (European Medicines Agency) (Tang et al., 2023).In recent years, there has been a shift towards enhanced safety screening during the lead optimization stages of drug discovery. Regulatory toxicology testing plays a pivotal role in determining the potential risks associated with new drug compounds and ensuring their safety before they can proceed to human clinical trials and, ultimately, be marketed to the public.

ABSTRACT

North-Western Himalayas have a large area which are degraded and bouldry. Such areas are not fit for crop production. These areas are generally kept unutilized and hence are invaded by uneconomic and invasive species. These lands can be brought under production though establishment of silvipastoral system which has a potential of fodder, fuel and timber production besides conserving natural resources. India has witnessed tremendous increase in the production of horticultural crops especially fruits since independence. Due to specialized scientific interventions and application of latest research tools, the country is now among the top fruit producing countries of the world ranking second next only to China. However, the productivity has still remained low as against area under the fruit cultivation. Several neglecting issues related to the production technology have remained unattended so far. The old and senile orchards are now reverting towards a declining trend of production because of plant age factor, non-compatible varieties and poor canopy management (Baba et al., 2011).

In the recent past declining productivity of old and dense orchards existing in abundance has become a matter of serious concern for the orchardists, traders as well as scientists. In India 30-35 per cent area under fruit crops is occupied by old, dense and diseased orchards. For overcoming the problem of unproductive and uneconomic orchards existing in abundance, large scale uprooting and replacement with new plantations (rehabilitation) will be a long term and expensive strategy. Therefore research efforts were initiated to standardize a technology for restoring the production potential of existing plantations by a technique called Rejuvenation. The term ‘Rejuvenation’ means renewal or making new or young again. As applied to the orchard tree it would mean restoring the productive capacity of the fruit trees. The meaning of ‘Rejuvenation’ according to Chamber’s dictionary is ‘to recover youth character or to grow again’. Obviously, this would apply to those plants which have attained a stage where they are no more profitable from the grower’s point of view.

18.1 INTRODUCTION

The decline in productivity of old and senile orchards existing in abundance has become a matter of serious concern for the orchardists, traders as well as scientists. In India 30-35% area under fruit crops is occupied by old, senile, and pest-and-disease- affected orchards. For overcoming the problem of unproductive and uneconomic orchards existing in abundance, large scale uprooting and replacement with new plantations will be a long term and expensive strategy. Thus, rejuvenation of old and senile orchards is a good alternative.

Pruning in young tree during initial stage help to form a strong frame work for better growth and development of the tree. However, on long term way, the tree becomes huge with gigantic canopy results in to problem of majority of agronomic operation, plant protection and harvesting of crop. Top working provides an opportunity to control the growth of tree and makes the tree productive with manageable canopy, in old and senile orchards.

Top working is a technique evolved to rejuvenate the unproductive and senile cashew trees. Poor yielding trees of 5-15 years of age can be successfully rejuvenated by top working. The unproductive trees are to be headed back to a height of 1.00 m from the ground level in October-November. The stem should be sawed off to avoid stump splitting. Soon after beheading, the stumps and cut portions should be given a swabbing with carbaryl 50% WP (50 g each per litre of water) or Bordeaux paste. Sprouts emerge 30-45 days after beheading. Sprouting will be profuse in young trees. So, it is better to keep only 4-6 healthy shoots on beheaded tree spreading in all directions and similarly the sprouts which come out from ground level (most probably water shoots) also removed frequently. On 30-45 day old shoots, graft scions of high yielding varieties following soft wood grafting technique. On each tree, 4-6 grafts are to be done to ensure at least 3-4 successful grafts per tree. The best season for grafting is March-April. Thinning of the extra shoots arising from the stumps should be done to obtain better growth of the grafts. Removal of sprouts below the graft joint and removal of polyethylene strip from the graft joint should be done. Top working is simple and can be done by farmers themselves after getting proper training. The top worked trees start yielding right from the second year of top working. Early bearing can be treated as one of the best advantages of this technique. The major disadvantage associated with top working is the huge casualty of trees due to stem borer attack. Intensive care and management to ward off stem borer is essential. As such adoption of top working on a larger scale would be difficult.

It is a matter of great surprise that in spite of provision of adequate resources, the per capita consumption of fruits here is perhaps one of the lowest in the world.

India has achieved tremendous increase in horticulture production after independence. Adoption of several production technologies developed by several agricultural universities across the countries boosted the production of the horticulture sector both by increasing area under various fruit crops as well as by elevating productivity. Though the country has acquired second position in world fruit production; the productivity is less than many under developed countries.Several reasons can be attributed for declining productivity; few of them are enlisted below.

• Cultivation of old and less bearing varieties
• Improper and unscientific management of fruit crops
• Large number of old and senile orchards with declining productivity
• Problems in flowering and fruiting due to aberrant climate especially during flowering and fruiting

The decline of productivity and health of the tress may be due to faulty management i.e. unsuitable site and climate, cultivation of intercrops, inadequate nutrition, improper planting, undesirable planting materials, incidence of insect pest and disease and other biotic and a biotic stresses. The decline of trees are characterized by sparse appearance, yellowing and different type foliage symptoms, undergrowth and sickly appearance, dried-up top growth with small and less number of fruits. The branches of trees start to die from the top to downwards, ultimately resulted poor quality fruits. Such type of decline may be seen in whole orchards, on in a single tree or patches. Senile orchards with poor productivity are now a common problem in temperate, tropical and subtropical fruits. Since most of the fruit trees has long juvenile period, hence going for replanting, rejuvenation may be better option to convert sick tree into productive ones.
