Introduction

The Wadi project mainly involves development of orchard (locally known as Wadi) on degraded lands. Mango, Cashew, Guava, Custard apple, Aonla, Lemon, Sapota and Drumstick are the major fruit crops that are cultivated by the tribal through Wadi project. Wadi is a comprehensive project for improving living standards and socio-economic condition of tribal families in remote areas. Acceptance of new idea is not a unit act but a complex process which involves a series of thoughts and actions. In other words, it is known as mental process through which an individual passes from first hearing about an innovation to final adoption. The components of Wadi project so far developed in recent has been for increasing the agriculture and horticulture production and productivity hence, it requires proper adoption by the tribal beneficiaries for production. Unless the components of Wadi project are properly adopted to larger extent by the tribal beneficiaries, the desired target cannot be achieved. The study was undertaken on following objectives.

Objectives

1. To study extent of adoption of components of Wadi project.

2. To study component wise adoption of Wadi project by the tribal beneficiaries.

3. To study relationship between profile of the tribal beneficiaries and adoption components.

Introduction

To truly comprehend, effectively design, rigorously develop, and clearly communicate the inner workings of such multifaceted simulations, relying solely on dense textual descriptions or abstract mathematical equations can prove daunting and often insufficient. This is precisely where relationship diagrams emerge as indispensable tools. At their core, relationship diagrams are powerful visual representations that translate the abstract scientific concepts and mathematical formulations embedded within crop-weather models into intuitive graphical formats. They are essentially the architectural blueprints and flowcharts of these complex systems, allowing us to see, rather than just read, how various components of the agricultural ecosystem interact. Imagine trying to understand the intricate wiring of a skyscraper or the precise movements of a symphony orchestra purely from a written description; diagrams provide the essential visual mapping that brings clarity and coherence to complexity. These diagrams are not mere aesthetic additions; they are fundamentally required because of the inherent complexity and interdisciplinary nature of crop modeling. They bridge critical gaps: Bridging Disciplinary Gaps: Agricultural system modeling brings together experts from diverse fields – agronomists who understand plant responses, meteorologists who provide weather insights, soil scientists who grasp soil physics and chemistry, and computer scientists who implement the models.

Arthropods occur up to the height of over 6,080 meters on land and up to the depth of about 59,728 meters in water. Different arthropod species are adapted for living in air, on land, in soil and in fresh, brackish or salt water.

Many insects are economically important for being pests of crops, stored grains, stored food, household goods and clothing etc. Some insects and arachnids are in one way or the other responsible for certain diseases of crops, domestic animals and human beings. Some arthropods, on the other hand, such as crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimps form a part of human diet while, small sized crustaceans are staple food for fishes. Many parts of the world have witnessed some insects and spiders eaten by many land animals including man.

Insects share many characters with other arthropods, but the other arthropods have not been able to exploit these to the extent insects have evolved. The presence of functional wings is a very important character which insects do not share with other arthropods, that is why insects have distinct advantage over other arthropods in their struggle for existence and dominance. A comparative account of Insecta and other arthropod classes is given in Table 1.

Abstract

Production technology has been worked out for crops and several inputs have been recommended which are to be applied in proper quantity at most suitable time to get the maximum return. Nutrition in the form of fertilizers is a must. However, injudicious use of agro-chemicals has resulted in diseases called ‘iatrogenic plant diseases’. Under the circumstances it is important to know the relationship between soil nutrients and plant pathogens which are causing the diseases of economic importance. Author has given adequate emphasis to micronutrients as at a very minor quantity they reduce the disease to an acceptable level. He has also discussed in detail about all the major and minor nutrients required by the plants and how their deficiency or over doses affect the plant pathogens and in turn the diseases.

Abstract

Among different acaricides evaluated, propargite (0.0285%) provided maximum control (98.6%) followed by fenzaquin (0.0025%) with 97.2 per cent control. Both propargite and fenzaquin were effective even 14 days after spray giving 71.0 to 80.6 per cent control. Horticultural mineral oils (1.0 %) were also effective and provided 87.7 to 93.8 per cent mortality of the pest after 24 hours of spray, however, their efficacy declined after 14 days of spray to 43.2 to 60.1 per cent. It was concluded that propargite (0.0285 % and 0.057%) and fenzaquin (0.001% and 0.0025%) provided effective control beyond 15 days of spray. Horticultural mineral oil treated plants, however, needed to be retreated in about 15 days.

The practice of official release of cultivars in India started in October, 1964 with the formation of the Central Variety Release Committee (CVRC) at the Central government level and State Variety Release Committee at State Government level. The Central Variety Release Committee functioned up to 1969 when its functions were taken over by the Central Seed Committee (CSC) established under the Seeds Act, 1966. The Central Seed Committee later on bifurcated CVRC and constituted (i) a Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops and (ii) a Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards Notification and Release of Varieties for Horticultural Crops to discharge the functions of release/notification, provisional notification and de-notification of cultivars at Central level for field and horticultural crops respectively. State Seed Sub-Committees (SSSC) were asked to discharge similar functions for release at State level. Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops is responsible for release and notification of field crops. This committee is chaired by ICAR-Deputy Director General (Crop Science). The members are drawn from Directors/Crop Coordinators of ICAR, Directors Agriculture from States, Directors Seed Certification Agencies, Managing Directors of State Seed Corporations, Representatives from Private Seed Companies, etc.

Released and notified varieties are offered for seed certification by the seed certification agencies which ensure that the varieties under certification meet certain prescribed field and seed standards failing which they stand to be rejected during the process of seed certification.

Purpose of Release

The purpose of Release of cultivars is to introduce the newly evolved varieties to the public and the farmers in particular for general cultivation in the region for which the variety is released and notified ensuring availability of seed of varieties according to their suitability and adaptation and avoiding mismatch. In other words, release of a cultivar is in the nature of a recommendation to the farmers for its adoption. Therefore, notification of a variety is linked to the release of a variety, though the release process itself does not have statutory cover.

Introduction
A breeding value is essentially the additive effect of a trait of interest that can be passed on stably to offspring. In artificial selection, the breeding values of the genotypes are determined. Hence, the key question is how to quantify the breeding value of a genotype for a phenotypic trait of interest that is part of a breeding program. As part of the process of breeding livestock, the estimated breeding value (EBV) is predicted based on a model that relates the phenotype over a population of genotypes with their pedigree information by using the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). Nevertheless, this method is not feasible for populations with no pedigree information or a complex population structure, which is typically the case in plant breeding when there are no pedigree records. With genomic selection (GS), this problem is addressed by determining the genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV), which addresses the problem by using genome-wide markers and combining them with various machine learning approaches in order to estimate the breeding value (Meuwissen et al. 2001). It is for this reason that the GS models are developed in a training population that is both genotyped and phenotype. GS model that has been created can be used for predicting phenotypic traits in unseen genotypes as well as for genotype selection in another population, called the breeding population (testing population) that has genotyped data only. The GS procedure described here can be applied to predict phenotypic traits for inbred as well as hybrid populations. As a result of this procedure, GS cuts in half the time it would take for a breeding cycle to be completed in order to develop new cultivars. All GS approaches rely on a method that is statistical in nature as they use a mathematical relationship between genotypic and phenotypic data in order to predict genotypes values.

Plant breeding poses a great deal of challenge when it comes to selecting the best individuals. The use of visual selection has not yielded the desired genetic gain compared to the results derived from the estimation of breeding values.

These data describe a unique array of information on biological entities such as DNA, protein and other molecules. Biological databases play a vital role in the biological research from the fundamental molecular biology to the applied areas of biology viz. medicine, agriculture, biochemical industries etc. This chapter introduces some basic concepts related to databases such as features, construction and classification of biological databases, submission and retrieving of data from biological databases.

Climate change is a statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period (typically decades or longer). Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures. Eleven years from 1995-2006 rank among the twelve warmest years in the instrumental record of global surface temperature (since 1850). The 100-year linear trend (1906-2005) of 0.74 [0.56 to 0.92] °C is larger than the corresponding trend of 0.6 [0.4 to 0.8] °C (1901-2000) and over the 21st century average temperature of earth surface is likely to go up by an additional of 1.8-4°C (IPCC, 2007). This temperature increase can be attributed to the altered energy balance of the climate system resulting from changes in atmospheric concentrations of the green house gases (GHGs). Among the principal components of radiative forcing of climate change, CO₂ has the highest positive forcing leading to warming of climate. CO₂ has the least global warming potential among the major green house gases but due to its much higher concentration in the atmosphere; it is the major contributor towards global warming and climate change. Agriculture sector in India contributes 28% of the total GHG emissions (NATCOM, 2004). The global average from agriculture is only 13.5% (IPCC, 2007). In future, the percentage emissions from agriculture in India are likely to be smaller due to relatively much higher growth in emissions in energy-use transport and industrial sectors. The emissions from agriculture are primarily due to methane emissions from rice fields, enteric fermentation in ruminant animals and nitrous oxides from application of manures and fertilizers to agricultural soils (NATCOM, 2004).

There are instances where the quality attributes of the commodities do not meet the required parameters as envisaged by the international market. Various issues associated with the product rejection on the basis of food safety and health standards are a matter of concern today rather than before. Hence, United Nations FAO and WTO urged the active involvement of the developing countries in the food standard setting processes in Codex Alimentarius as well as in SPS and TBT Committees. This will ensure harmonisation of food quality standards and traceability for rapid response to food borne disease outbreaks. Governments and local authorities shall intervene in the market place in setting technical regulations; and sanitary and phytosanitary measures which in turn will encourage the food processing companies around the world to implement food safety management systems to ensure the production and distribution of safe foods.

It is crucial to understand that our entire health and wellbeing depends centrally on our mental health. A broad spectrum of mental health issues that impact our mood, thoughts and behaviours may lead to stress, sadness, anxiety inappropriate eating disorders, addictive behaviours and many more. People occasionally face mental health issues, but when persistent symptoms impair functioning and cause regular stress, a mental health concern turns into a mental disease. It also affects how we respond to people, deal with stress and make decisions.
From infancy to adolescence mental health is very crucial for healthy development as it lays the foundation for development of positive social, emotional, cognitive and communication skills and behaviours in young people and that boost the mental health and wellbeing in later life.
Why Is Mental Wellbeing Important?
According to estimates from the World Health Organization, 20% of young people suffer from mental problems and the incidence are growing faster (World Health Organization). Greater numbers signify a greater effect and are more serious. Globally, mental, behavioral and neurological disorders are predicted to account for nearly 15% of disability-adjusted life years by 2030; number of years that an individual was “lost” to living with the aftereffects of a certain disease or lived with a handicap. However, the prevalence pattern varies among high, middle and low-income countries (Prince et al., 2007).

I. INTRODUCTION

Procedural remedies for the infringement of one’s right are not enough by themselves unless they result in some reliefs of substantive nature whereby it can reasonably be said that these reliefs, temporary or permanent, as the case may be, are enough in the circumstance to make good or, say, compensate the genuine loss of the aggrieved party to an infringement suit. The substantive remedies available to a successful plaintiff at any stage in any suit for patent infringement could, however, be derived from the express as well as by necessary implication of the provisions of the Patents Act, 1970 dealing with the “Reliefs in suit for infringement”. Its Sec. 108 declares in terms quoted below:

The country would have celebrated his 84th birth day on 15th October 2015. To many like me, he was the most ideal role model that the youth of India needed, in recent time. He emerged as a complete human-being who touched the lives of people.

My first meeting with him was when he visited IPCL in eighties - as the DRDO Chief to discuss about Carbon Fiber and Composites. I was heading GSFC’s R&D Centre and other facilities like engineering plastic Nylon – 6 and their Composites and hence was invited to join the discussions. That interaction left a strong impression in my mind. Later when I became Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Agricultural University, I had many more opportunities to meet him and was often surprised at his deep rooted interest and knowledge in every sphere of Science & Technology. Subsequently, to my delight, I received an invitation from his office on the eve of 26th January evening - at home with the President and later was given more time for a one-to-one meeting the next day. Walking across the corridors of the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the atmosphere looked rather formal and uneasy for me, but, as I was ushered into his room, I saw Dr. Kalam wearing his favourite blue shirt and smiling. He moved forward and greeted me with the same friendliness and warmth. As we started talking about Agriculture scenario, the work I was planning and the future prospects, I marveled at his understanding and insight and left the room truly inspired.

He enquired briefly about the progress in my work in Bio Technology and Agriculture in the first 2 minutes but later turned his entire attention to the little girl. It was amazing the way he interacted and talked with much love and

Earlier, I did have some interactions with Dr. Kurien. When at GSFC Ltd., we had introduced Nylon – 6 Engineering plastic. I had discussed with my team of Research and Application Development Engineers about multi layer packaging of dairy products where Nylon – 6 can have a good market potential which we used to discuss with Amul. Also, our work on Bio Fertilizers and Bio Pesticides had indirect interest to them. So, when suddenly I was offered the position of Vice Chancellor of GAU and was in a dilemma, I went for his advice. After all, he had held the same position earlier (in addition to AMUL). I explained about the offer and said that I was not too sure about accepting it. He, on the contrary, encouraged me to accept it saying “you can do a lot !” I just murmured,” But I am not an agriculture graduate. I am a Chemical Engineer!” To which he jokingly said – “So ?. I am a Metallurgical Engineer. And now I am a Dudhwala!”

Abstract

The Indian Peninsula in general and its southern part in particular has been thought to be a stable shield area and hence inert to younger earth movements and seismicities. However, in addition to fast relapsing seismicities, the studies carried out by earlier workers during the past three decades indicate possible pulsatory tectonism, at least since the Jurassics. The present study is a newer attempt to identify, analyse, and spatially amalgamate a large number of anomalies visibly displayed by the tectonic, fluvial, coastal, and hydrological systems in remote sensing and ground based datasets/observations, and to finally paint a fair picture on the active tectonic scenario of South India. The study reveals that the phenomena, viz. extensive soil erosion, reservoir siltation, sediment dump into the ocean, preferential migration of rivers, restricted marine regression, shrinkage of back waters, withdrawal of creeks, fall of groundwater table, etc., indicate two E–W trending ongoing tectonic (Cymatogenic) archings along Mangalore–Chennai in the north and Cochin–Ramanathapuram in the south. Intervening these two arches, a cymatogenic deep along Ponnani–Palghat–Manamelkudi exhibiting phenomena opposite to the above is observed. In addition, the characteristic tectonic, geomorphic, and hydrological anomalies observed in 1B satellite FCC data, as well as in the field, indicate N–S trending extensional, NE–SW sinistral, and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. These anomalies and the tectonic features deduced there upon, indicate that the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is tectonically active due to the northerly to north– north-easterly directed compressive force related to post collision tectonics. This active tectonic model visualized for South India gives a further clue that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with alternate E–W arching and deepening, along with block and transform faulting from Cape Comorin in the south to the Himalayas in the north.

Remote sensing provides large-scale information about crops and agricultural environments through satellite, aerial and other sensing technologies. This chapter examines the integration of remote sensing and artificial intelligence for crop monitoring and yield prediction. It introduces the fundamentals of agricultural remote sensing, important sensors and data types, vegetation indices and crop health assessment. Data acquisition and preprocessing are followed by applications of AI models for monitoring crop conditions and predicting yields. Remote sensing datasets can be combined with machine learning and other AI techniques to identify patterns associated with crop performance. The chapter also discusses case studies, limitations, emerging technologies and future research opportunities in intelligent crop monitoring and yield forecasting

Abstract

The Remote Sensing and the followed up field based investigations show that the Tamil Nadu coast, India, is facing series of geoenvironmental problems due to tectonic movements and morphodynamic processes. Such problems pose a challenge to the engineering geologists. The paper discusses such challenging engineering geological problems and plausible remedial measures.

1. Introduction

Plant diversity is vital for the survival and well-being of humanity. A number of domesticated plant species are critical to food security. In addition to the cultivated species, many wild plants also play an important role in meeting local needs for food, fuel, medicine and construction materials; crop wild relatives are also of special interest for crop breeding programmes. There are currently hundreds of underutilized plant species and varieties displaying traits of interest to meet present and future needs, while the value of many other plant species is yet to be discovered (Stohlgren et al. 1997). Researchers have confirmed the importance of the contributions and interdisciplinary understanding in relation to taxonomy, physiology, reproductive biology, conservation biology, hydrology, soils, as well as socioeconomic and climate change for holistic understanding of biodiversity patterns (Dale 1999; Myers et al. 2000). It is thus necessary that the professionals studying plant diversity require a synoptic view on the regulators of biodiversity and the tools through which the processes could be understood.

Spatial analysis can contribute significantly for improved understanding and monitoring of plant diversity. Results obtained from spatial analysis make it possible to formulate and implement targeted conservation strategies, which can be more effective (Escudero et al. 2003; Dale 1999). Outputs from spatial studies can provide critical information like evaluation of the current status of plant species and prioritize areas for conservation on the plant diversity, in particular geographic region. Spatial information, combined with available characterization and/or evaluation data, is very useful for effective genebank management (e.g. definition of core collections, identification of collection gaps, etc.). This type of analysis is conducted using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, which allows one to carry out complex analyses combining different (spatial) data sources and generate maps, to facilitate the development and implementation of conservation policies (Goodchild 1992; Crosetto et al. 2000; McCarthy 2001).

Abstract

The ever increasing population in India and the world, impeding threats from the climate change scenario and the increasing demand for land resources from the industrial sector calls for improved resource efficiency. The production strategies are changing from input intensive to integrated resource management strategies. The shift is towards adopting the precision farming technologies like addressing the site specific variability and crop needs. Remote sensing technology coupled with GIS has been recognized as reliable tool in agriculture to guide application of fertilizer, pesticides and other farm inputs. With precision farming, technologies such as grid soil sampling, remote sensing, on- the-go sensing, and electronic yield monitoring help farmers gather very detailed information about the heterogeneous makeup of a farm field. Site specific applications means application of required input only where it is required rather than entire fields or adjusting application rates accordingly. This chapter discussed the input management based on the time of intervention - Input management prior to crop sowing, in season crop management and end of the season.

Introduction

Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through an analysis of the data acquired by a device which is not in contact with the object, area or phenomenon under investigation. The definition of remote sensing is restricted to mean the process of acquiring information about any object without physically contacting it in anyway regardless of whether the observer is immediately adjacent to the object or millions of miles away. It is further required that such sensing may be achieved in the absence of any matter in the intervening space between the object and the observer. Consequently, the information about the object, area or any phenomenon must be available in a form that can be impressed on a carrier vacuum.

Remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems provide spatial information for monitoring crops, land, soil and water resources. This chapter introduces their fundamental principles and explains developments involving satellites, UAVs, hyperspectral sensors, thermal imaging and cloud-based geospatial platforms. Analytical techniques include vegetation indices, time-series analysis, spatial modelling and artificial intelligence. Applications cover crop-health monitoring, yield forecasting, irrigation planning, drought assessment, pest and disease identification and soil-resource management. Integration with IoT, automation and other digital technologies improves the timeliness and resolution of agricultural information. These tools support evidence-based decisions responding to food-security, climate-change and natural-resource sustainability challenges.

Abstract

The development index and the developmental planning of a Country/Nation mostly depend on its natural resources potential including water resources. The fast emerging Remote Sensing and GIS technology has substantially reduced the problems of water resources management including groundwater. The groundwater is distinctly controlled by western crystallines, central Tertiary sandstone and eastern Quaternary sediments in Pudukkottai district. While the groundwater behavior in crystallines is dominantly controlled by secondary porosity, in Tertiary formations and Quaternary sediments, it is controlled primarily by the primary porosity and by secondary porosities also if these are structurally deformed.

Abstract

Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) have emerged as potential tools for competent planning and administration of water resources. In this study, a new methodology is proposed to delineate groundwater target zones using integrated RS, GIS and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The developed methodology is confirmed by a case study in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, Southern India. Seven thematic layers, viz., Lithology, Lineament Density, Geomorphology, Slope, Post– Monsoon Water Level, Drainage Density and Land use / Land cover were considered in this study. Selected seven thematic layers and their features were assigned suitable weights on the Saaty’s scale according to their virtual significance in groundwater incidence. The assigned weights of the thematic layers and their features were then normalized by using AHP. Finally, the selected seven thematic maps were incorporated by weighted linear combination method in a GIS environment to produce a groundwater target map.

ABSTRACT

Topsoil erosion, loss of fertile soil and subsequent deposition in the reservoir as well as in the low-lying region are one of the major problems in the tropical mountainous region. Knowledge of sediment yield from the river basin is a prerequisite to address such issues. Rivers from the Western Ghat region of Uttara Kannada district bring lot of sediments causing siltation in their mouth. In the present study, sediment yield from a Venkatapur river basin in Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada district is estimated by Universal Soil Loss equation (USLE). Morphometric characteristics of the river basins that reflect sediment yield potential of the river basin are used to constrain the data obtained. Various parameters for USLE is derived from the IRS 1D LISS III image and data are handled in GIS environment. Sediment yields in the basin 101 tons/yr. Morphometric characters of the basin such as drainage density, bifurcation ratio, basin circularity (0.6) and form factor (0.43) suggest its low potential of sediment yield.

Abstract

Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) are integrated system in providing precise information on nature, extent and spatial distribution of land resources to assess their potential and limitations for planning, monitoring and management towards sustainable development. The use of remote sensing and GIS provide immense opportunities in the field of large-scale mapping, generate and update of existing geographical databases for decision making in site- specific management and development of land resources. Integration of remote sensing and GIS includes the use of each technology to benefit the other, as well as the application of both the technologies for geospatial modelling and decision support. Remote sensing and GIS integration has clearly benefited from advances in computing and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies, including innovations in use of decision tree algorithms and neural networks. The generated precise spatial database in GIS on land resources, socio-economic and contemporary technologies could be effectively used to develop GIS based Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS) for sustainable management of land resources. In this article an attempt has been made to provide an overview on the remote sensing and GIS technologies as a special decision support tools in inventory, characterization and management of land resources particularly in digital terrain analysis, geomorphological mapping, hydrological applications, soil resource inventory, assessment of soil loss, land degradation and soil fertility, soil-site suitability and watershed prioritization.

Abstract

Food security to the increasing population on one side and the increasing export of food grains on the other side has lead to the immediate attention on to raise the food production in our country. The decreasing land availability for agriculture due to the increased degraded lands and use of agricultural lands for non agricultural purposes has still worsened the situation. In order to match with the food requirement from decreasing agricultural lands, Indian agriculture has been pushed towards indiscriminate use of farm inputs exploiting the non renewable natural resources without any concern to the environmental ill effects leading to further degrading of the situation. Even though the concept of sustainability is age old, the importance is felt recently. Sustainable use of resources at farm level can magnify the effect of conserving non renewable resources and reducing ill effects on the environment at state level and to the country. Sustained farm production is a key to manage our resources and environment. Adoption of new information technologies with the conventional agronomic practices to increase farm production is made inevitable due to our past experience. A systematic approach of management involving advanced technologies and conventional agronomic practices through understanding the factors like soil variability, weather parameters and crops that contribute for the sustainable farm production is need of the hour. The spatial and temporal variability of the farm production parameters are to be studied and mapped in relation to historical data of the farm for successful site specific management. Site specific management tools may improve decisions related to site conditions, thereby reducing the aspect of uncertainty in the management system. This approach of farm management using advanced technologies viz., Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System, Global Positioning System, Variable rate technology, crop production modeling and Decision Support System can enable sustainable farm production with beneficial effect on the environment in future.

Introduction
Accurate and detailed information on the geographical location, aerial extent, and spatial distribution of wastelands is crucial for their efficient management and sustainable rehabilitation. Among modern resource assessment tools, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as powerful technologies for detecting, evaluating, mapping, and monitoring degraded lands. Space-borne multispectral imagery, with its ability to provide large-scale, repetitive coverage, has proven particularly effective in identifying salt-affected soils and waterlogged areas in a timely and cost-efficient manner. In visual interpretation of satellite data, regions with high soil moisture and surface waterlogging appear as dark grey to black, indicating areas prone to water stagnation. To analyze the spatial dynamics of wastelands and assess the effectiveness of high-resolution satellite imagery, IRS P6 satellite data (23.5 m resolution) alongside topographical maps (1:50,000 scale) are commonly used. Given the dynamic nature of wastelands, multi-temporal satellite data is essential for precise delineation. These images must be geo-referenced within a unified coordinate system for consistency. The Planning Commission of India has endorsed GIS as an indispensable tool for land-use planning and wasteland development, facilitating treatment area identification, landuse trade-off analysis, and impact assessment simulations. Recognizing the importance of wasteland management in national development, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) initiated a GIS-based wasteland mapping project in 1991, building upon earlier efforts by the Department of Science (1986) under the National Wasteland Identification Project, which mapped 147 districts at a 1:50,000 scale. Remote sensing

It is the art and science of obtaining information about an object, area, or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device without being in physical contact. Remote sensing technology involves acquiring information about the earth’s surface and atmosphere, using satellite based sensor, interpretation, of spectral measurements and characterization of land resources and environmental phenomena.

The information recorded by this technology is not visible to humankind. It provides synoptic view as well as three-dimensional view of larger area. And data are received periodically and helps in monitoring the changes at short intervals. The data recording is unbiased one which is stored permanently and can be used in many applications. Thus, processing of data is faster than the conventional interpretation method. Thus, soil resources data collected by extensive ground surveys and soil maps were prepared using cartographic techniques these were tedious, costly and time consuming. Multi date, multi spectral and real time satellite data provide a reliable accurate tool for assessment and repeat coverage of the same area at the same local time for monitoring soil resources (Joshi, 2013). In remote sensing, reflected energy from the object is recorded by a sensor. The information about the object is obtained through the analysis of reflected rays. Three energy interactions occurs when electromagnetic energy falls on any surface feature i.e., reflection, absorption and transmission.

Abstract

The southern part of the Indian Peninsula has long been regarded as a stable area free from Pleistocene tectonics as it represents the Precambrian shield region. But the frequent earth tremors even up to a magnitude of 6.5 (Richter scale) which occurred in Tamil Nadu have started encouraging the geologists to think that it could possibly be a seismic prone zone. In addition, images acquired by the polar orbiting satellites offered valuable information on the fracture systems and fluvial anomalies suggesting possible Pleistocene tectonism in South India. Hence, a study has been undertaken to evaluate the signatures of Pleistocene tectonism in South India using IRS-lA, LISS-1 FCC imagery (Indian Remote Sensing Satellite lA, Linear Imaging Self Scanning 1, False Colour Composite) involving band 2, 3 and 4 under blue, green and red bands respectively.

The study has brought out a series of E-W trending cymatogenic arches and N-S trending extension, NE-SW trending sinistral, NW-SE trending dextral and E-W trending release fractures with characteristic signatures supporting Pleistocene tectonism in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

On the basis of such morphotectonic features, a Pleistocene tectonic model has been presented with a N-S trending greatest principal stress and an E-W oriented least principal stress related to the movement of the Indian plate towards the Tibetan plate. Based on the model developed for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, a series of E-W trending cymatogenic arches and deeps have been proposed for Cochin- Rameswaram in the south to the Himalayas in the north. Further studies for seismotectonics, geothermal resources and hydrocarbon search have also been suggested along such arches and deeps.

Coastal zones are credited for the important role they play in the economic, industrial and commercial activities of many countries. Starting from the early fifties of the last century, coastal zones have attracted greater attention from the earth scientists owing to the discovery of huge hydrocarbon deposits in the Persian Gulf, Africa and South America. In addition, coastal zones especially those bordering Precambrian Cratons house significant quantities of economically important placer minerals which are being explored and exploited vigorously. In the present paper, sedimentary basins located along the continental margins of Tamil Nadu state, their geology and hydrocarbon potential are discussed. In addition, an attempt has also been made to demonstrate the usefulness of remote sensing techniques in the exploration of this strategic mineral.
