Remote sensing involves measurement of the physical properties of a body without actual contact with it. It is based on the reflectance when the electromagnetic radiation is incident upon a body or surface. The spectral characteristics of the reflected radiation vary depending upon the nature and condition of the surface. In case of vegetation, it absorbs light and can reflect light in the visible range. The leaf pigments dominate the reflectance properties (Fig.9.1). The radiation bands within which the reflectance of electromagnetic radiation takes place are classified as follows-

9.1. Vegetation Indices
The vegetation index is a mathematical expression that uses spectral imaging data to characterize the health and growth of the vegetation indices are calculated using data collected by remote sensors like Satellites. The vegetation indices have wide range of applications in agriculture and hydrology including

• Evaluate crop growth, vigour, biomass and chlorophyll content

4.1 Introduction
Having explored the direct, “hands-on” approach of in situ observations in the previous chapter, we now turn our attention to remote sensing. In contrast to in situ methods, remote sensing allows us to gather information about the atmosphere without physically touching it. Instead, it relies on the detection of electromagnetic radiation (or acoustic waves) that has been emitted, reflected, or scattered by the atmosphere or its constituents.
This chapter will focus specifically on ground-based remote sensing platforms. Positioned on or near the Earth’s surface, these instruments offer unique advantages for continuous monitoring of the atmosphere above a fixed location, providing valuable insights into vertical profiles, temporal evolution, and localized phenomena. From radars that peer into storms to lidars that probe aerosols and winds, and radiometers that measure emitted radiation, ground-based remote sensing provides a vital link between highly localized in situ measurements and the broader spatial coverage offered by satellite and
airborne systems.
We will delve into the fundamental principles behind several key groundbased remote sensing instruments used in meteorology. This will include an examination of how they interact with the atmosphere, the types of atmospheric parameters they can measure (such as precipitation, wind, temperature, humidity, aerosols, and trace gases), and the strengths and limitations of each technique. By understanding the capabilities of these ground-based “eyes” on the sky, we can better appreciate their contribution to weather forecasting, atmospheric research, and environmental monitoring.

Remotely gathered data are available from a range of sources and data collection techniques is often one type of tool that is not always found within the public domain easily. This is larger due to the fact that most of the data are acquired by equipment is expensive to build and maintain. However, there are many types of basic imagery, high-quality imageries are readily available widely at subsidized costs, particularly the purpose intented.

Remote Sensing in Mineral Exploration

Remote sensing is a powerful tool used in mineral exploration to study and identify minerals and mineral deposits from a distance. This technology allows geologists to gather information about the Earth's surface and subsurface without having to physically access the site. Here are some ways remote sensing is used in mineral exploration:

Mapping Geology: Remote sensing can be used to map geology by identifying surface features associated with mineral deposits. Geologists use images collected by remote sensing satellites and aircraft to create detailed maps of the geology and topography of a region. These maps can help identify areas that are likely to contain mineral deposits.

Different minerals have unique spectral signatures that can be detected by remote sensing instruments. By analyzing these signatures, geologists can identify the type and abundance of minerals present in an area.

Remote Sensing in Oil Exploration

Remote sensing plays a significant role in the oil exploration industry. It refers to the use of sensors and instruments to gather information about the Earth's surface and its environment from a distance. This information can be used to locate and evaluate oil and gas deposits.

There are different remote sensing techniques used in oil exploration, including

Seismic surveys: This technique involves creating sound waves underground and recording their reflection to determine the subsurface structure. It is commonly used in oil exploration to locate potential oil and gas deposits.

Magnetic surveys: This technique uses a magnetometer to measure the magnetic field of the Earth's surface. Magnetic anomalies can indicate the presence of underground geological structures that may contain oil or gas deposits.

Gravity surveys: This technique involves measuring variations in the Earth's gravitational field, which can indicate the presence of underground geological structures.

6.1 Introduction to Remote Sensing in Watershed Management

Remote sensing involves acquiring information about the Earth's surface without physical contact, using satellite or aerial imagery. This technology has revolutionized watershed management by providing detailed and timely data, crucial for effective planning and decision-making.

6.2 Remote Sensing Technologies and Techniques

Satellite Imagery

Satellite imagery involves capturing images of the Earth from space using satellites equipped with sensors. Some of the most notable satellite missions providing high-resolution imagery for large-scale environmental monitoring include Landsat, Sentinel, and MODIS.

a. Landsat: Operated by NASA and the US Geological Survey, Landsat satellites have been observing the Earth since 1972. Landsat provides medium-resolution images (15-60 meters per pixel) in both visible and infrared wavelengths, allowing for detailed monitoring of land use, vegetation health, and water bodies.

ABSTRACT

Leaf N and chlorophyll (Chl) concentration of crop are important indicators of plant nitrogen status. Laboratory determination of plant tissue N is time consuming and costly. Also remote sensing is quickly becoming recognized as a valuable tool that has the potential to asses a wide variety of physiological properties over a large area in a short amount of time. This study examined the relationship of sorghum and bajra canopy reflectance spectral response to its nitrogen and chlorophyll content. The study consisted of two nitrogen level (N₀ : no nitrogen and N₁: recommended dose of nitrogen for each crop) for two crops (sorghum and bajra) . Chlorophyll and N content were measured throughout the growing season for both crops. Reflectance at increased significantly as N fertilizer rate decreased. Chl and N were strongly related to canopy reflectance for either individual wavelength or for spectral vegetative indices or ratios. Sorghum nitrogen fertilizer rate mainly affected leaf reflectance at 575 and 623 nm, while bajra at 565 and 657nm. The reflectance values at 581 and 603 nm had the highest correlation with sorghum leaf N concentration. Similarly, bajra leaf N concentration was highly correlated with 619 and 696 nm. Sorghum and bajra leaf N concentrations were highly correlated with reflectance ratio of R₅₈₁/ R₃₈₁ (r²= 0.44*) and R₆₁₉/R₄₆₂ (r²= 0.78***) respectively with greatest r² value. Similarly, Sorghum and bajra leaf Chl concentrations were highly correlated with R677/R527 (r²= 0.63**) andR688/R409 (r²= 0.71***) or R615/R411 (r2=0.71***),

respectively. Thus our results suggest that spectral reflectance measurements hold promise for the assessment of some physiological parameter at the leaf level real time monitoring of sorghum and bajra N status and N fertilizer management.

Much has been talked about the mighty river systems and their migratory histories, since Purana and Vedic times. In Mahabharata the places where the Lord Krishna is said to have played with Gopis in the banks of River Yamuna are now forming flat lands many kilometers away from the present day Yamuna. In the same way, there is a mention in ancient literature about the ‘Indo-Brahm’ river which was originated from the Himalayas and flown through Brahmaputra valley, Indo-Gangetic plains, Rajasthan desert and met the Arabian Sea in Rann of Kutch. Such a mighty river is said to have fragmented into Brahmaputra, Ganges and the Indus rivers due to Tectonic activity in Himalayan regions. Similarly there are many evidences in the Tamil literature. For example in ‘Kalingathuparani’ it is mentioned that the river ‘Palar’ was flowing north of Kanchipuram but the same river is now flowing south of it.

All these facts show that the rivers have the tendency to frequently change their courses. The advent of modern Remote Sensing Technology has opened up new vistas in studying such migratory rhythms of the rivers, as such old and buried rivers exhibit spectacular ribbon like, linear, curvilinear and contorted features with typical darker tone in black and white images and reddish tone in false color composites (FCC) and other color coded images.

Abstract

From amongst various geomorphic features the landforms generated by the river systems are significant as these are not only the records of the life histories of the rivers, but also the various dynamic processes and phenomenon operated during their origin like tectonic movements, sea level changes, flood histories, climate changes etc. In this connection a study has been conducted using the satellite borne multi spectral remote sensing data in mapping the flood plains, particularly their anomalies like symmetrical, asymmetrical, multilevel, offset and meander scrolled flood plains of some selected rivers from Asia viz: Tamirabharani, Cauvery and Brahmaputra from India, Indus river from Pakisthan and Tineg river from Phillipines. The paper discusses about these and their significance in unfurling the ongoing tectonic movements, sea level changes, palaeo – ongoing strom surge / tidal activities, ongoing earth tremors etc.

Introduction

The Rivers are not simply the carriers of water from the mountain ranges to the plains and to the oceans. But they have well defined and characteristic life histories of their own, with youthful stage in the mountains, mature stage in the plains and the old stage in the coastal regions [6] and the life histories of the rivers are often compared with man’s life. Infact, once the rivers are born on the surface of the Earth, their only aim is to attain the Mean Sea Level (MSL) or the base level of erosion as early as possible and as short as possible. So, in the mountains, which are normally their regions of origin, since the rivers occur thousands of meters above the MSL, flow vibrantly taking advantage of the slope as short and straight drainages to cut deeply the terrain so as to attain the MSL easily. Since such vibrant activities of the rivers, appear to be similar to the human youths, the rivers are said to be in youthful stage in the mountain regions and the erosion is the only dominant activity. But, on climbing down the hills and reaching the plains, as they still occur at hundreds of meters above the MSL, continue to flow towards the sea but with meandering, sinuous and oscillatory paths as they have lost their elevations when compared to the mountains and in this process of meandering perform both erosion and deposition. As such stabilized flow or “Watch and walk phase” of the rivers in the plains resembles the matured behavior of the middle aged Men, it is called as mature stage of the rivers. In contrast, when the rivers reach the coastal zones as they have attained the MSL, they don’t have any energy to carry even their own load and hence dump all the sediments as deltas, oscillate here and there and finally somehow reach the sea. Such Brownian movement of the rivers as replicates the activities of the old Men, called as the old stage of the rivers. Thus the erosion, both erosion and deposition and only the deposition are respectively the activities of the rivers in these three stages, accordingly the respective and contrasting landforms are formed in these three different stages of the rivers.

Abstract

Drainages have characteristic pattern and life histories with youthful stage in hilly areas, mature stage in plains and old stage in the coastal zones. The deviations from their normal life histories, especially aberrations in their flow pattern in the form of various drainage anomalies have been inferred to be the indications of dominantly the Eustatic and Isostatic changes. This, especially after the advent of Earth Observing Satellites, has attracted the geoscientists from all over the world, for studying such drainage anomalies. In this connection, a study has been undertaken in parts of South India falling south of 14° south latitude to comprehensively map some drainage anomalies like deflected drainages, eyed drainages and compressed meanders and to evolve the tectonic scenario therefrom. The mapping of such mega drainage anomalies and the related lineaments/faults from the satellite digital data and the integration of such lineaments/faults with the overall lineament map of South India showed that the study area is marked by active N–S block faults and NE–SW sinistral and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. Such an architecture of active tectonic grains indicates that the northerly directed compressive force which has originally drifted the Indian plate towards northerly is still active and deforming the Indian plate.

Introduction

Rivers have characteristic pattern and life histories with (1) short and straight drainages performing only erosion in the hilly catchments, (2) meandering and sinuous paths doing both erosion and deposition in the plains and (3) Brownian pattern of movement doing only dumping of sediments and building up of deltas in the coastal zones. Such characteristic life history of the rivers with youthful stage in the hills, mature stage in the plains and the old stage in the coastal zones in general are controlled by the base level of erosion or Mean Sea Level (Thornbury, 1985). But, the rock types and the geological structures of the terrain related to palaeo, time transgressive and ongoing tectonism too significantly control the drainage pattern and the related river flow dynamics in all these three stages. Hence, geoscientists from all over the world have all along been showing greater interest in understanding the drainage architecture in general and their anomalies in particular. That too, after the advent of Earth Observing Satellite technology, mapping of drainage pattern and their anomalies like dentritic, semi dentritic, trellis, parallel, annular, radial, deflected, pirated, avulted, eyed, compressed, preferentially migrated and other drainage anomalies have gained greater momentum, since, besides lithology, tectonics and sea level changes, these drainage anomalies have the credibility of providing information on the flood histories, seismic vulnerability, past climates and anthropogenic phenomenon too (Chitale, 1970; Chen and Stanley, 1995; Lillesand, 1989; Matmon et al., 1999; Miller, 1937; Reid, 1992; Saintot et al., 1999; Smith et al., 1997; Twidale, 2004; Thornbury, 1985 and many others). In different parts of the Indian sub-continent too, studies have been carried out on the drainage anomalies using topographic sheets, black and white panchromatic aerial photographs and orbital multimode and multispectral satellite data, to elucidate the structural fabric, tectonic processes, climatological and other phenomenon of especially the Quaternary period (Amalkar, 1988; Babu, 1975; Bakliwal and Sharma, 1980; Barooah and Bhattacharya, 1989; Mitra et al., 2005; Murty and Mishra, 1981; Narasimhan, 1990; Oldham et al., 1901; Philip et al., 1989; Rajaguru and Kale, 1985; Ramasamy, 1991, 2006; Ramasamy and Kumanan, 2000; Ramasamy et al., 1987, 1991, 2006; Singh et al., 1996; Sood et al., 1982; Thirunaranan, 1938; Vaidyanadhan, 1971; Yashpal et al., 1980).

Aquaculture has developed quickly over the last three decades to turn into important economic activity world wide. It has been attracting heavy investment due to the availability of sound technologies and limitless potential for export especially shrimp. There are several forecasts on demand for aquatic foods and it is expected that it will be 183 million tonnes by 2030. As the capture fishery production is stagnating at around 90 million tonnes, aquaculture is seen as the only alternative to bridge the widening gap in demand and supply. Globally, Landings from worldwide aquaculture has increased 10-15 % per year in the last two decades and this growth was due to the combined effects of scientific farming, availability of infrastructure facilities, changing consumer preferences and export market potential to developed countries.

Shrimp farming is relatively new and its introduction on a commercial scale can be traced to the early seventies. Despite the recent introduction, one third of the world shrimp production is from farmed shrimp. The shrimp producing countries are found in all regions based on FAO statistics including Europe and Middle East. The major to five shrimp producing countries are China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. The future increase in world aquaculture production will be driven by China with South Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Europe providing small increases.

What is Remote Sensing?

Remote sensing means sensing the objects that are far away from the reach of our senses. It is a tool to identify the characteristics of an object without having any direct contact over it.

In other words, it can be defined as, science of acquiring information about earth’s surface viz., land cover, oceans & coastal, agriculture, forestry, geographical mapping etc, through sensing, energy emission and processing, analysing and recording reflected images.

How does it Work?

Remote sensing process involves interaction between radiation emitted from the object and the target of focus. This can be explained by the use of imaging system that follows seven elements. However, it should be noted at this point that remote sensing not only uses imaging system but also uses non-imaging sensors and sens- ing of emitted energy.

Sustainable management of soil resources is essential for food, nutritional and economic security of the country. The continued degradation of soil resources is considered an important factor in lowering the total and partial factor productivity of agriculture in the country. The process like soil erosion, nutrient loss, water logging, desertification, acidification, compaction, crusting, salinization and soil contamination affect food and environmental security in most parts of the country. The future agricultural growth at higher rate cannot be sustained with a deteriorating soil resource base. We need to monitor the quality of soil resources and devise appropriate management strategies for sustainable crop production without deteriorating the environment.

In India, several agencies like National Commission on Agriculture (NCA), Ministry of Agriculture (Soil and Water conservation Division), Society for Promotion of Waste lands Development (SPWD), NBSS&LUP, Nagpur have been constantly inventorizing and characterizing soil resource for drawing up land use and development plans at National and State levels. However, there is a great variance in estimates due to differences in approaches and criteria for assessment. For an example,the total degraded land as estimated by NCA is 148.09 Mha as against, 175.0 Mha by Ministry of Agriculture (Soil and water conservation Division), 129.58 Mha by SPWD and 187.7 Mha by NBSS&LUP, Nagpur.

In soil profile development, we focused on vertical variability in soils - the differences among soil horizons. In this chapter we focused on horizontal variability- how soils differ from place to place across the landscape. Spatial variations in soil properties occurs across distances having geographic meaning for land management-from a few meters to many kilometers. We need to monitor regularly the status of our soil resources employing modern technologies to refine our understanding about them and renew our commitment to their preservation. The applications of Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) have greater opportunities to offer in this regard.

Abstract

Remote sensing has wider applications in agriculture right from landscape mapping, soil moisture, planting dates, cropping systems to climate change effects. Growing uncertainties of weather and climate change pose a major threat to food security of the country and thus warrant for farmers empowerment of informed decision in agricultural risk management. The technology is competent to monitor crop growth, predict crop yield in terms of quantity and quality, assists in estimating crop acreage, its condition, disease and pest status. Over the last two decades, the development of space technology has led to a substantial increase in satellite earth observation systems. Simultaneously, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolution has rendered increasingly effective the processing of data for specific uses and their instantaneous distribution on the World Wide Web (WWW). Satellite data provide better coverage in time and in area extent than any other alternative. It is important to make maximum use of this information to monitor our environment. Access to these Satellite data and products is only the beginning. In addition, the ability to interpret, combine, and make maximum use of this information is an integral part of weather and climate management at the national level. Production estimates, post harvest and quantity available for market enable the farmers and policy makers to chalk out sustainable strategy to match supply with market demand.

Remote sensing is emerged as an important application of science in all fields for collection of information from a far. This chapter describes the fundamental concepts of remote sensing, electromagnetic radiation (EMR), the interactions between EMR and earth surface features, satellites etc.

8.1 What is Remote Sensing?

Remote sensing is nothing but acquiring information about an object without touching the object itself. In other words, remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without making physical contact with that object. In present era, the term generally refers to the use of aerial sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on the Earth by means of propagated signals. As remote sensing is obtaining information about objects without making physical contact with them, remote sensing can be described as ‘reconnaissance from a distance’, ‘teledetection’ or a form of the common phrase ‘look but don’t touch’.

The word ‘remote sensing’ was coined by Evelyn L. Pruitt, an American Geographer in 1960. Remote sensing is defined as collection and interpretation of information about a target without being in physical contact with it. Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area or phenomenon under investigation (Lillesand and Keifer, 1994).

The information needs a physical carrier to travel from the objects/events to the sensors through an intervening medium. Any force field such as gravity, magnetic or electromagnetic could be used for remote sensing. However, the electromagnetic radiation is conventionally used as an information carrier in remote sensing. Remotely sensed data may be gathered by different devices, including sensors, film cameras, digital cameras and video recorders. Instruments capable of measuring electromagnetic radiation are called sensors.

Remote sensing is nothing but opposite of astronomy. In astronomy, man looks from the earth to the sky to understand and gain more knowledge about the celestial objects. But remote sensing refers to going upward in the sky to look downwards to understand and gain more knowledge about terrestrial objects. In remote sensing, the aerial sensor technologies are used to detect and classify objects on earth by means of electromagnetic radiation.

4.1. Introduction

Many countries have set up a network of agrometeorological observatories to regularly record important weather parameters such as clouds, rainfall, surface temperature, humidity, wind and wind direction, solar radiation, soil moisture, temperature and humidity profile of the atmosphere, etc. The observation process is performed either manually or through Automatic Weather Stations (AWS).

This recorded information is used for weather forecasting, natural resources management and for tracking agricultural production. However, these networks, which handle data of high spatial climate variability, are typically less robust than they should be. Moreover, the agrometeorological data collected from different ground stations is not transmitted in real time to a central collection point which limits the use of information.

Satellite remote sensing technology is an alternative system that is gaining popularity in the recent times which has allowed us to obtain frequent and precise measurements of vital agrometeorological parameters such as rainfall, solar radiation, temperature, evapotranspiration, albedo etc. Satellite data has many advantages over traditional ground stations, such as high spatial resolution (50 m–5 km), wide spectral bandwidth range (0.4–3.75 um) and high temporal frequency (even half an hour) and the prospect of collecting data from remote areas. In addition to routine repeated observations, satellites often provide synoptic views of the earth’s surface from space on a wide scale and have archive of information to create baseline data.

The preparation, planning and use of agricultural technologies for agriculture, needs application of agricultural meteorology. The role of agrometeorology in the last three decades has increased in terms of increasing food and nutritional security for the burgeoning population and natural resource management particularly in the context of global climate change. Agrometeorology can help to minimize inputs, thus clarifying the contribution of ecosystems and agriculture to the carbon budget in the event of global change. Agrometeorological information needs to be disseminated to users in time and space quite accurately, as agricultural activities are linked to the very local situation where the outputs of modern tools such as local area models, climate models, and dynamic crop simulation models are reduced to finer grid resolution and combined using GIS to extract practical suggestions. This chapter describes the recent applications of remote sensing in Agrometeorology.

In beginning of aerial photography, the photos were taken to evaluate existing topography, plan observation and sampling incursion. After World War II, the assessments of aerial photographic data were much more difficult, and real geological data started to be extracted. The use of stereoscopic pairs enabled geologist to explain height structural features. But, the basic use of remote sensing data were collected was in explanation. These trends of comparative photography until development took place into the satellite age when satellite imagery began popular and commercially available. The availability of various imageries in several combinations opened a option to analyze regions in much more detail. Apart from this, the multiple flying allowed a prospect to be viewed in various light during differnt seasons. The development drastically decreased the cost of regional exploration by minimizing repeated trips to a place for reassessing. This permitted data to be gathered from the tropics and arid regions that was previously difficult task in wide regional field exploration. As computer age progressed being developed and enhanced the value of data that allows imagery as digitally highlighted specific features. Ground features like differential cropping, drainage patterns, and folds/faults may be identified.

Remote sensing is a technology that enables us to acquire information about one object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object. Generally, we are used to take observations in site or at the site. Development of remote sensing technology is now making it possible to quickly and almost simultaneously to collect information from the earth surface and other planets as well. Remote sensing is used to measure the thermal complexity and structural complexity of microclimates and how organisms respond to environmental changes. The thermal complexity is a result of the response and behaviour of different characteristics of the earth surface including vegetation, soils, structures, water bodies etc. Optical remote sensing makes use of visible, near infrared and short-wave infrared sensors to form images of the earth’s surface by detecting the solar radiation refl ected from targets on the ground. Different materials refl ect and absorb differently at different wavelengths. Thus, the targets can be differentiated by their spectral refl ectance signatures in the remotely sensed images (Fig.18.1). Structural complexity is defi ned as minimum number of numerical specifi cations required to describe an object in physical space. Structural complexity is a key ecological factor that describes the three-dimensional physical structure of the ecosystem. It is often linked with biodiversity.

Introduction

We use our five senses to perceive the world around us. Some senses, like touch and taste, need contact with the objects. But we get most of our information about the environment through sight and hearing, which do not need close contact with the external objects. In scientific terms, we are doing remote- sensing all the time. Remote- sensing is the process of recording/observing/ perceiving (sensing) objects or events from a distance. Remote- sensing is a way of monitoring and detecting the features, usually physical, of a specific area by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation (usually from satellite or aircraft).

Term rendering is generally used to recover the fat from animal material by heating. However, today rendering word is applied in broad sense in by-products industry to recover stock feed, fertilizers and fats from slaughter house offals, parts and condemned material from animal body. Today many products are recovered by rendering process and can be utilized in different ways. Some of them may be categorized as edible and inedible. The major examples are lard and tallow which may be edible and inedible depending on the processing. Other valuable products include chemicals, meat meals and bone meals. To get these valuable products, various animal by-products are processed like viscera, bones, trimmings, dead stock, feather and other poultry materials.

Abstract

The increase in human population, their growing economic activities and more and more transport demands, on one side, have increased the requirement of automobile fuels more than ever before, but the political turmoil in Middle east oil producing countries, the quick declination in stock of fossil fuels, the high rise in petroleum prices and rapid increase in air pollution due to automobile emission, on the other side, have made people of both developed and developing countries to search some non-polluting renewable but commercially viable alternative automobile fuel as a national priority. Hydrogen based fuel cells and latest designed improved storage batteries are knocking the door to bring revolution in developing non-polluted electric drive vehicles for 21st century. Successful blending of bio-diesel with petro-diesel has shown promising results to give relief to the present generation for saving some petroleum for future generation, for reducing air pollution substantially and for generating employment opportunity for its rural masses.

Nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2050, and cities currently pump out 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings alone contribute nearly 40% of emissions. This is also true for Indian cities, which are responsible for 40% of the energy use, 30% of raw material use, and 20% of land use. The residential and commercial buildings account for 31 % of the electricity consumption and are rising at 10-12 % annually. As per estimates, approximately 75% of the building stock that India will see in the year 2047 is yet to be built. For all these issues, renewable energy is the major solution.

Soil air, its composition, gaseous exchange

Soil air is a continuation of the atmospheric air. It is in constant motion from the soil pores into the atmosphere and from the atmosphere into the pore space. The circulation of air in the soil and renewal of component gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide is known as soil aeration. Soil aeration is essential for the respiration and survival of soil organisms and plant roots.

Composition of soil air

Soil air contains gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and others. The composition of soil air is different from atmospheric air. Soil air contains more carbon dioxide and less oxygen than atmospheric air. It also contains more water vapour than atmospheric air. The nitrogen content of soil air is almost equal to atmospheric air. (Table below)

Introduction

The extension approaches followed in agricultural sector during past decade is reoriented in various occasions and new system of approaches were implemented. The present day orientation is shifting the efforts of extension from production orientation to profit orientation. Under these circumstances, the key factor for success will largely depend upon the extension service provider’s orientation and farmer’s capacity to absorb new knowledge of improved practices and technology. In order to orient officials towards this change HRD is essential. This will help them to impart required competencies in knowledge and skill such as technical, organisational, managerial, communication and business skills.

The present day extension approach i.e. ATMA focusing towards block level planning, farmers participation in planning and implementation of various schemes, group approaches, importance to agri and allied aspects are the major focus of ATMA. The Tamilnadu government in the year 2007 reorganised the extension system in to twotier at district level with the major focus to block level. In each block Agricultural Extension Centres (BAECs) were established which houses for agriculture, horticulture, marketing, agri. engineering departments.

There are two assumptions necessary involved in the regression of repeatability. These are:
• The variances of the different measurements are equal and have their components in the same proportions, and
• The different measurements reflect genetically the same character. If these assumptions are not valid the repeatability concept becomes vague without precise meaning in relation to the variance components.
The repeatability differs very much depending on the following:
• The nature of the trait.
• The genetic properties of the population.
• Environmental conditions under which the individuals are kept or raised.
Repeatability indicates the proportion of observed differences in performance between animals caused by differences in real producing ability. That is say, repeatability of butterfat yield is 0.40, and if a cow has an age corrected butter fat yield of 30 kilograms above the herd average, her near producing ability will be equal to 30x 0.40 = 12 kg. above the herd average. This can also be explained in a different way, i.e., if two cows differ in one lactation by 30 kg in butter fat yield. They will have difference of 12 kg of butter fat in the next lactation.
Repeatability has a value 0 to 1 and may also be expressed in percentage. Repeatability of a trait is not a constant, and measurements error or generally, varying environmental conditions tend to increase VEt and thus to decrease repeatability, shrode et al (1960) have shown the effect of a change in environmental conditions on repeatability. They obtained repeatabilities of milk yield, butter fat yield and fat percentage as 0.37, 0.32 and 0.7 respectively and after improving the management removed some of the environmental variations that had marked the cows real producing abilities.

Introduction

There are a number of estimates of post-harvest losses. The most conservative estimates for the handling losses at about 10 per cent, a quantity good enough to feed at least 60 million people. Storage loss occurs due to quantitative and qualitative damages caused by insects, mites, fungi, rodents, birds, heat, moisture, etc. Several hundred insect species have been reported to be associated with stored grains and milled and processed foods, but some 50 of these species are considered injurious. Under Indian conditions, the most important insect pests of stored grains are Sitophilus oryzae (Rice weevil), Tribolium castaneum (Red flour beetle), Rhizopertha dominica (Lesser grain borer), Callasobruchus spp. (Pulse beetle), etc.

The use of repellents to ward off insects has been a very old practice of mankind. The simple fly swatters, feather dusters, hand fans, mosquito nets etc., are some of the physical repellants still in use. In our own country, mustard oil or turmeric (haldi) water is also used as a mosquito repellent. Fire and smoke are the two oldest insect repellents known to man. To get rid of wasp nests from our dwelling or ward off honeybees during honey extraction, smoke is normally employed. Similarly sandal dhoop is often burnt to purify air (i. e. to ward off insects) in our houses.

Chemicals that prevent insect damage to plants or animals by rendering them unattractive or offensive are called repellents. A more broad-based definition would be: non-poisonous or mildly poisonous chemicals that induce avoiding (oriented movements in insects away from their source. Repellents are more important in the protection of man and his animals from insect attacks than in the protection plants.

In many experimental situations, it becomes necessary to repeat an experiment over time, (for a number of seasons or years). This repetition (or replication) of the experiment broadens the scope of the experiment in the sense that our recommendations will be applicable for a number of seasons. In the case of agricultural experiments, for example, there may be present treatment x season interaction. So the results of a series of experiment, performed for different seasons with the same set of treatments, will have wider applicability.

We shall consider the simplest case of a repetition of experiments of identical structure for a number of seasons. Let us consider randomized block experiments with t treatments in r blocks and conducted in p seasons. The analysis of the experiment in a season is based on the linear model. Before attempting a combined analysis for the p experiments, it is necessary to perform the analysis for p experiments separately and interpret the results separately. It may be of interest to find out whether differences among the treatments are the same in the different seasons so that ‘ best ‘ treatment may be recommended for all seasons or whether different treatments are to be recommended for different seasons.

We next consider the analysis of the combined experiments considering the seasons as a random sample from the population of seasons. Analysis of Variance of series of experiments

ABSTRACT

Immature seeds of Garcinia indica were excised from the green fruits and cultured on Woody Plant Medium (WPM) with a combination of auxins and cytokinins. Somatic embryos were obtained on the media supplemented with BAP (0.5-5.0 mg/l) alone or in combination with NAA 90.5 mg/l) with 80 per cent frequency within a period of 2-3 weeks. Subculture of primary embryos on maturation medium containing BAP (3.0 mg/l) supplemented with IAA (0.5-1.0 mg/l) and / or Kinetin (1.0 mg/l) gave rise to clusters of secondary somatic embryos. In the subsequent subculture on hormone free half strength WPM the embryo clusters germinated with repetitive secondary embryogenesis. About 70 per cent somatic embryos germinated into complete plantlets, which were successfully transferred to the green house conditions.

The financial and commercial book keeping that is generally practiced by dairies, the main purpose of which is to ascertain the total results of the business during a given period, does not answer the question whether the costs of processing of milk products and of the various operations involved in manufacturing, are reasonable. For this purpose, dairy plants have to keep detailed records of the expenditure incurred on different components and processes, for planning of production and controlling of costs. In large multi-product dairy plants, production is generally characterized by mixed and joint production and the different operating operations are interrelated. Thus, it becomes difficult to draw a distinction and allocate and apportion the consumption of various services and utilities to arrive at the cost of different operations of various products.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has developed three different sets of records on dairy accounts which may be used to record different information for cost and quality control. These records are:

Abstract

Three-point bend test (three point bend ring-HDP/3PB) for five types (Good day, Butter bite, Marie, Krack Jack and Salted) of commercial biscuit brands (Britannia, Supreme, Parle, Lancer, Priya Gold and Dalmia) was developed using TA-XT2, texture analyzer and probable factors affecting the results were assessed. Maximum force to break the biscuits, number of fracture before break, thickness of biscuits and percent break point penetration were found in the range of 1006.5 to 3456.5g, up to 3, 4.2 to 6.3mm and 5.54 to 22.62%. The rupture of biscuits were observed on the basis of probe penetration into the biscuits and found that maximum resistance for penetration offered by Marie whereas minimum by salted biscuits, which was respectively the hard dough and fermented dough biscuit varieties. The analysis of variance for the results revealed that there is significant difference (P£0.01) in the maximum force of break for the biscuit types and brands individually or in combination. Difference in the thickness of biscuits was also found significant among types and commercial brands. The number of fractures was not consistent among the types as well as biscuit brands before reaching the maximum force of breaking the biscuit.

9.1. Introduction

Reproduction is an important event in the life of an animal (both male and female). The success of a dairy farm depends on the reproductive efficiency of cattle which depends on the efficient reproductive management. The animals should be reproductively sound. The cow should be a regular breeder with calving interval of 12-13 months to minimize the generation interval and to increase the profitability of the dairy farm. The bull should have high libido, produce good quality semen with high fertility rate.

Fishes are generally unisexual and reproduce by several methods. Some families (Sparidae and Serranidae) are hermaphrodite also. Alz (1964) reported that in certain species, hermaphrodism becomes a normal way of life. In hermaphroditic f ishes, self-fertilisation is a common process. Parthenogenesis could have been produced experimentally (Austin and Walton 1960). There maybe a few secondary organs that increase reproductive fitness. The genital papilla is a small, fleshy tube behind the anus in some fishes, from which the sperm are released; the sex of a fish can often be determined by the shape of its papilla.

Male Reproductive System

Male reproductive system (Fig. 15) consists of testes, epididymis, vas deferens and papillae.

Cocks have two ovoid creamy white testes, of which the left one is slightly larger than the right. Testes are located in the fore end of the kidneys in the abdominal cavity. Closely attached to the testes is short epididymis that continues as vas deferens which ends in the cloaca. The copulatory apparatus consists of two papillae and a rudimentary copulatory organ, the phallus which is located on the median ventral portion of one of the transverse folds of cloaca. Accessory reproductive organs like seminal vesicles, prostrate and Cowper’s glands are absent in the cocks. The phallus is small and has associated lymph glands that produce a fluid which is added to the semen.

The spermatozoa pass through the epididymis and are stored in the distal end of the vas deferens. The sperm after mating is stored in the folds in the oviduct of the hen to effect fertility up to six days. The spermatozoa of the cock have a long cylindrical head with a pointed acrosome, a short mid-piece and a long tail. Cocks produce about 0.5 -1 ml of whitish semen per ejaculate with a sperm concentration of 2- 4 billion.

Reproduction in fungi is the formation of new individuals having all the characters of species. It is of two types. Asexual, somatic, or vegetative reproduction does not involve the union of nuclei of sex cells or sex organs. Sexual reproduction is characterized by the union of two opposite nuclei. During reproduction entire thallus is converted into one or more reproductive units. It is called holocarpic fungi (holo = whole, korpos = fungi) ex. Plasmodiophora and Synchytrium. In Plasmodiophora vegetative body is plasmodium, which is transformed into reproductive structure. In some fungi only a part of thallus is transformed into one or more reproductive structures. (eu = true, good, carpus = fruit). These fungi are known as eucarpic. Both somatic and reproductive structures coexist. Ex. Rhizopus, Puccinia and Helminthosporium.

3.0 INTRODUCTION

There are two main types of plant reproduction / multiplication that are used and these include sexual reproduction known as seed propagation / multiplication and the asexual reproduction known as vegetative propagation / multiplication. Propagation is most often by seeds produced by plants or by plant parts like vines, roots, tubers, suckers, etc. Propagation is the natural mechanism by which plants regenerate. Seed is the organ of reproduction in flowering plants.

3.1 SEXUAL REPRODUCTION OR SEED PROPAGATION TECHNIQUES

Seed is the organ of reproduction in flowering plants. Sexual reproduction is propagation by seeds. This is the main method by which plants reproduced in nature as most plants produce seeds except in species that have separate male and female plants; e.g. Njansang (Ricinodendron heudelotii) and Black fruit (Canarium schweinfurthii)

Seed multiplication seems to be the most practicable technique by the farmers. Example Agroforestry Species that are mostly propagated by seeds are Sweet Bush mango [Irvingia garbonensis], Bitter Bush mango [Irvingia wombolo], Bitter kola, Kola nitida, Kola acuminata, Njansang [Ricinodendron heudelotii].

5.1. Anatomy of the Genitals

5.1.1. Male reproductive system

Testes in the male are oval-shaped present within the scrotum which remain in communication with the abdominal cavity, where they were at birth. The rabbit is actually able to withdraw its testes when frightened or fighting with other males (Fig. 5.1). The testicles descend at about two months. The short, back-slanting penis points forward when erect.

Reproduction in the males culminates in the production of semen containing fertile spermatozoa and deposition of these in the female reproductive tract at an opportune time.

Male Reproductive Organs

The reproductive organs in male domestic animals comprise the testes, epididymides, and accessory glands. The testes produce the spermatozoa and the male sex hormones (androgens). The spermatozoa pass from the testis into the epididymis where they acquire motility and attributes essential for fertilization and are then stored there. At ejaculation they are squeezed along the ductus deferens into the urethra and mixed with the secretions of the accessory glands to constitute the ejaculated semen.

Testis

The testis are composed of long tubes called seminiferous tubules and interstitial tissue. The spermatozoa are produced within the seminiferous tubules. This process is known as spermatogenesis. The interstitial tissue contains Leydig cells which are responsible for the production of the male hormone called androgens. The androgens are produced under the influence of hormones from the anterior pituitary namely ICSH (LH) and FSH. The principal androgens produced by the testis are testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.

The testis are suspended from the body in the loose sacs called scrotum, present in the inguinal region. The scrotum in addition to its container function, also acts as a regulator of temperature required for spermatogenesis.

To achieve maximum reproductive efficiency, animals recently introduced into the breeding herd should be closely monitored. Effective management results in an increase in the number of live farrowed and weaned pigs. The following boar management strategies will aid in increasing fertility.

Care and Management of Breeding Boar

• Boars should be fed at a level of energy that prevents excessive fat deposition. This approach should ensure that they are physically fit and sexually active.
• To fulfil the minimum daily recommended amount, nutrients other than energy need be delivered.
• Boars must be at least 7.5 months old and to be tested for reproductive health.

Animals need to function efficiently during reproduction in order for a dairy production system to be sustainable. This is necessary to produce milk, the primary product of interest, as well as to supply replacement animals. From the perspective of reproduction, delayed puberty, lengthy calving intervals, limited productive lives, and high calf mortality are the key variables that cause economic losses. Reproductive management’s proportionate contribution to the effectiveness of dairy production systems varies greatly.

Mode of reproduction
All the living organisms produce individuls of their own kind for the survival of their species which is called reproduction. Hence, reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organism (offspring) are produced from their “parents”. In vegetable crops, modes of reproduction may be sexual, asexual and both. Most of the vegetable crops viz., tomato, brinjal, chilli, sweet pepper, peas, cowpea, hyacinth bean, French bean, cluster bean, runner bean, fenugreek, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, knolkhol, Brussels sprouts, sprouting broccoli, radish, beet, turnip, carrot, onion, leek, amaranth, palak, spinach, asparagus, pumpkin, bottle gourd, watermelon, muskmelon, ridge gourd, snake gourd, wax gourd, summer squash, bitter gourd, cucumber, sweet corn, coriander, parsnip, etc. are exclusively propagated sexually for both commercial cultivation and breeding purpose. Some vegetable crops like, pointed gourd, teasle gourd, yam, taro, Jerusalem artichoke, globe artichoke, etc. are exclusively propagated through asexual mode of reproduction. On the other hand, some vegetable crops like, potato, sweet potato, cassava, annual moringa, etc. can be propagated by both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction however, they are generally propagated asexually for commercial cultivation and their sexual reproduction is employed for the purpose of breeding.

Reproduction

Since the life of an individual plant is limited in duration, it has developed certain mechanism by which it can reproduce itself inorder to continue the perpetuation of the species and also to multiply in number. Mode of reproduction determine the genetic constitution of crop plants, that is, whether the plants normally homozygous or heterozygous. A knowledge of the mode of reproduction of crop plants is also important for making artificial hybrids. The various modes of reproduction found in crop plants may be broadly grouped into the following two categories : (i) Asexual and (2) Sexual.

Asexual Reproduction

Heterosis breeding systems depend upon the reproduction system of plants, whether the plant is propagated asexually or sexually. Therefore, before development of hybrids, information regarding type of flower, flowering habits and floral biology is required in hybridization programme (emasculation and pollination). In a sexual reproduction, plants develop from vegetative parts of plants (vegetative propagation) or may develop from unfertilized gametes, ovular tissues, and modified cells (apomixes). Vegetative reproduction includes plant regeneration from underground stems such as tubers in potato, bulbs in onion and garlic, underground tubers such as sweet potato, corms in yams, and rhizomes in ginger and turmeric. In certain cases, aerial parts are used for propagation as stem cuttings in tapioca, sweet potato, watercress, and drumstick, root suckers in curry leaf and globe artichoke and turfts in chive. In apomixes, sexual reproduction or gamete fusion is replaced with other form of asexual reproduction. In this case, embryo develops without fertilization. Apomixis may be of different types: (1) Apogamy—where embryo develops from a gametic cell of embryo sac other than egg cell. Apogamy may be haploid or diploid. Diploid apogamy has been reported in onion. (2) Polyembryony—where more than one embryo develops from a seed, resulting in more than one seedling. In this case, embryos usually develop from nucellus integuments, or chalaza in addition to normal syngametic embryo. (3) Parthenogensis where embryo develops from an unfertilized egg. This may be at haploid or diploid level. Sometimes, embryo development take place from unfertilized egg of a diploid plant. This is called haploid parthenogenesis. It originates in plants due to environmental effects, especially due to effects of high or low temperature, use of foreign pollen, application of chemicals, and use of irradiated pollen. Haploids parthenogenesis produces haploids.
