11.1 Principles and Framework for Risk Assessment
11.1.1 Introduction
Risk assessment is an indispensable scientific tool in evaluating the safety and potential impacts of genetically modified (GM) crops on human health, animal welfare, and the environment. It provides a structured, evidence-based framework for identifying hazards, characterizing risks, and proposing mitigation strategies before the approval and commercialization of GMOs. In the context of biotechnology and regulatory biosafety, risk assessment ensures that GM crops meet both national and international standards for biosafety and sustainability.
11.1.2 Definition of Risk Assessment
Risk assessment is defined as the systematic process of identifying, evaluating, and characterizing the potential adverse effects arising from exposure to a GMO or its products, under specified conditions of use.
Risk = Hazard × Exposure
Where hazard is the potential to cause harm, and exposure is the likelihood of encountering the hazard.
11.1.3 Objectives of Risk Assessment in GM Crops
• To evaluate the safety of GM crops for human and animal consumption.
• To assess the potential environmental impacts, including effects on biodiversity, gene flow, and ecosystem interactions.
• To ensure that regulatory decisions are science-based, transparent, and precautionary.

Introduction

The risk assessment is gaining importance as the scientifically-based approach for the development of food safety and quality standards. It is a logical extension of HACCP revolution. In hazard analysis, first the hazards likely to occur in foods are identified, then an assessment is made of the severity of each hazard, and an evaluation is done of its likelihood to occur. Severity and likelihood are the two factors involved in risk assessment. Second, the increase in international trade has raised new safety and quality challenges. New approaches address the risk of cross-border transmission of infectious and hazardous agents with emerging food-borne diseases and quality problems. This has led to the development of a new safety and quality regulatory framework in 1995, the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) and the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO). In these two Agreements, two provisions are of importance to fish safety and quality:

• National SPS and quality requirements should reflect standards agreed on in the international standards setting bodies i.e. Codex Alimentarius for food quality and safety.

• Domestic standards can be developed based on scientific risk assessment.

Risk assessment of microbiological hazards is identified as a priority area by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). In 1999, the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) in the 32nd session, identified a list of 21 pathogen commodity combinations that require expert risk assessment advice. FAO and WHO jointly launched a programme with the objective to provide an expert advice on risk assessment of microbiological hazards in foods to their member countries and to the CAC. Under which, expert groups are established to examine four priority pathogens: product pairings, e.g. Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat food; Salmonella in eggs and broiler chickens; Campylobacter spp. in broiler chickens; and Vibrio spp. in seafoods. Risk assessment is therefore important throughout all aspects of the seafood industry - for companies, national governments and for international regulators.

Introduction

Aquaculture uses a variety of chemicals for a number of functions, including sediment and water management, improving natural aquatic productivity, transporting living organisms, creating feed, manipulating and enhancing reproduction, promoting growth and health, processing, and adding value to the finished product (GESAMP, 1989). Aquatic systems are thought tobe suitable places to recycle and dispose of hazardous and sewage wastes, with any excess being drained into the ocean. To fulfil the demands of the ever-increasing population, the water resources are overused for potable supplies, irrigation, industry, and thermal generating plants, which drastically diminishes their assimilative capacity.

This chapter identifies the physical, environmental and psychosocial risk factors that can compromise worker health and performance. Repetitive movements, awkward postures, excessive force, static positions, contact stress, vibration, poor lighting and unsuitable temperatures are examined as common ergonomic hazards. Their consequences include musculoskeletal disorders, fatigue, reduced concentration, stress, absenteeism and chronic disability. The chapter introduces ergonomic risk-assessment methods and tools such as REBA, RULA and the NIOSH Lifting Equation. It also presents a hierarchy of control measures covering engineering redesign, administrative controls, safer work practices and protective equipment. Workplace examples demonstrate how systematic intervention can reduce injuries while improving productivity and employee satisfaction.

Farming-based livelihood systems are complex and variable, influenced by a wide range of factors that can pose risks to agricultural production and the well-being of farming communities. Here are some key risk factors:
Environmental Risks
1. Climate Change: Increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events (droughts, floods, hurricanes) can dramatically affect crop yields and livestock health.
2. Soil Degradation: Erosion, loss of soil fertility, and contamination can reduce agricultural productivity over time.
3. Water Availability: Both the scarcity and pollution of water sources can impact irrigation and livestock, leading to reduced yields and livestock health.
4. Pest and Disease Outbreaks: Invasive insects, diseases in crops or livestock, and a lack of pest management practices can threaten production.
Economic Risks
1. Market Fluctuations: Volatility in prices for crops and livestock can affect farmers’ income stability. Dependence on a single crop can exacerbate risks.
2. Access to Credit: Limited access to financial services can hinder the ability to invest in necessary inputs or recover from crop failures.
3. Rising Input Costs: Increases in costs for seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery can affect profit margins.
4. Trade Barriers: Changes in policy, tariffs, and trade agreements can affect market access and profitability.

Introduction 
In healthcare settings, risk management is not a novel idea. There is a wealth of research on risk control in the supply of medications, in-vitro diagnostics production, pharmaceutical manufacture, health information protection, & healthcare process management. Risk management is an important part of patient safety programs in developed countries. An important aspect of quality improvement in laboratories is risk management, which requires an evaluation of every testing method. All the working laboratories must perform this repeated preventive means at least once a year. The safety of laboratory workers, the caliber of results, and environmental preservation all depend on risk management in good laboratory practices (GLP). These are a few GLP risk management techniques. GLP- The Concept In accordance with excellent laboratory practice, risk management should be implemented by evaluating every laboratory procedure to guarantee the safety of both patients and staff. When a GLP facility implements a risk-based inspection procedure, risk assessments will be documented. QA inspection programs will frequently cover widespread operations, but the frequency & extent of the inspection may not take into account or represent the risk associated with each action. By putting quality control procedures into practice, one can learn about the shortcomings of a particular activity and use this information to focus the quality assurance program. According to the OECD Principles of GLP, or “the principles,” there are three different kinds of quality assurance inspections: process-, study-, and facilitybased. Engineering interventions must therefore account for hydraulic forces, sediment movement, channel morphology, and long-term river behaviour. This chapter defines river training and explains its objectives, benefits, limitations, and key design principles. It discusses guide banks, groynes or spurs, embankments, revetments, pitching, launching aprons, cut-offs, and related protective works. It also considers structural placement, classification, construction materials, maintenance, and environmental consequences.

Introduction
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global concern, rendering many once-effective antimicrobials useless and threatening modern medicine’s foundations [1]. RNA-based therapies offer precision, programmability, and modularity—tailoring interventions directly to microbial genetic machinery [2, 3].
Main RNA-based modalities include
• Antisense Oligonucleotides (ASOs): Short synthetic single-stranded RNAs that bind complementary mRNA in bacteria to inhibit translation or induce RNase H–mediated degradation [15].
• RNA Interference (RNAi): Though classically applied to eukaryotes, siRNAs or crRNAs delivered via nanoparticles (also termed “nanoantibiotics”) can silence microbial resistance or virulence genes while the carrier materials physically damage microbial membranes— enhancing lethality [3, 4,5].
• CRISPR-Cas Systems: Adapted as antimicrobials, CRISPR-Cas tools can precisely target and cleave resistance genes in pathogens via conjugative plasmids or phages [6].
• Ribozymes / External Guide Sequences (EGSs): Engineered noncoding RNAs that harness RNase P or ribozyme activity to degrade specific bacterial mRNAs [16].

Principle

RNA is negatively charged at neutral pH and when an electric field is applied, it migrates towards the anode. Introduction

Entrepreneurial and start-up firms share traits but also differ. It takes courage to start a new business, but not always with the latest technology. Founders of new companies, almost always based on new technology, take risks. Both types of firms must overcome limited resources and talent. Both entrepreneurs and start-ups seek to segment and expand markets. Starting a business involves risks, but start-ups face additional risks of innovation. (Rao, 2018).

The project is the very foundation of any business. As a result, the success or failure of a company is primarily determined by the project. In layman’s terms, a project is an idea or plan meant to be carried out. According to the dictionary, a project is a scheme, design, or proposal for something intended or devised to be accomplished. Beginners often wonder where to begin. Some options are obtaining power-water connections, pollution control clearance, approvals of weights and measures/drug control, and registration with sales and income tax departments. But, first, an entrepreneur must set priorities. (IGNOU, 2017).

In urban areas, there are spaces along the roads which can be beautified by planting various groups of plants by proper planning. In addition to that, there are large traffic islands in metropolitan cites which are ideal for developing gardens. Even narrow central verge of the two way roads provide ample scope for plantation. These kinds of plantations sometimes in the form of gardens are very useful and fulfill dual purposes - beautification and amelioration of environment.

Scope - Vacant areas along both sides of the metal roads in semi-urban and urban places are ideal for plantation. Depending upon the space available, trees and shrubs can be planted in various ways.

6.1 Introduction

Perennial crops are crucial for maintaining food security, despite making up only 4.2–4.7% of all agricultural acreage (Kreitzman et al., 2020). The value of fruit and nut production reached a value of USD 823 billion globally in 2020, with the top five fruit crops being apples (87 Mt), oranges (78 Mt), grapes (77 Mt), mangoes (55 Mt), and apricots (41 Mt) (Statista, 2020). The tree nut business is growing quickly, although making up a smaller share of the world’s agricultural output. Global tree nut output is expected to reach 4.2 Mt in 2019–2020, with almonds, cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, and pistachios accounting for 31%, 17%, 21%, 12%, and 14% of the nut market share, respectively (Serna, 2020).

Tree crops require a longer investment period before producing a commercial yield; sweet cherry takes three years to attain a commercial yield, while pistachio takes ten (Rezaei et al., 2019). High-density monocultures of cultivars chosen for their potential yield, fruit quality, and disease resistance are part of optimal tree crop production techniques. These monocultures are maintained under intensive, high-input farming systems (Simon et al., 2017). However, inadequate pollination can seriously impair the quantity and quality of these agricultural products, prompting for meticulous dedication to pollination research and management (Bosch et al., 2021; Forbes et al., 2019).

Effective pollination, and on the contrary, situations in which pollination is restricted or deficient, depend on both internal and external factors (Figure 7.1, Table 7.1). The period of stigma receptivity, the lifespan of the ovule, and the quality and availability of compatible, suitable pollen are all considered as intrinsic factors (Howlett et al., 2015). Agronomic methods pertaining to plant nutrition, orchard layout, pest and disease control, pollinator activity, pollen quality, and weather patterns and their effects on flowering synchrony are examples of extrinsic factors(Toledo-Hernandez et al., 2017). Hatfield and Prueger assert that pollination is one of the phenological stages that is most sensitive to temperature, and as such, it has a significant impact on productivity (Hatfield and Prueger, 2015). Climate has been shown to be a key factor in determining pollination success and production in crops including peaches, apples, and almonds.

Agricultural robotics addresses labour shortages, production demands, environmental concerns and the need for greater operational precision. This chapter examines unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous ground machines, robotic manipulators, greenhouse robots and livestock systems. Enabling technologies include multimodal sensors, computer vision, navigation, control systems and artificial intelligence. Applications extend from land preparation, sowing and crop monitoring to weeding, spraying, irrigation, harvesting and post-harvest processing. Emerging approaches such as reinforcement learning, digital twins, swarm coordination and soft robotics are also explored. Technical reliability, high investment, connectivity, labour displacement and data ownership remain important barriers. Future development must prioritize accessible, affordable and farmer-oriented automation platforms.

Robotics is transforming livestock production by automating repetitive, labour-intensive and precision-dependent operations. This chapter examines automated milking, robotic feeding, manure removal, health monitoring, drones and autonomous herd-management systems across dairy, poultry, swine and sheep production. Integration with AI, IoT and sensors creates connected environments capable of continuous monitoring and data-driven action. Benefits include higher productivity, lower labour requirements, timely animal care and more efficient resource use. Challenges include substantial investment, technical complexity, maintenance and farmer acceptance. Emerging developments such as autonomous farms, swarm robotics, solar-powered equipment and climate-smart robotic systems may further strengthen animal welfare, environmental sustainability and global food security.

10.1 Introduction

The agriculture sector is also transforming through technological intervention and advancements drastically to improve several processes and crop and livestock production systems. These advancements have resulted in minimizing operation and production costs, reduction of environmental impact and optimization overall production cycle. The major issue in the agriculture sector is human-intensive operation and non-availability of sufficient labor on time. The on-field task like fruit harvesting, intra-row weed control which is supposed to be more difficult to perform by the traditional machinery and manually. This has made to think to introduce the autonomous tractors and robotics platform in field operation. Timely activities and treatment play an important role in agriculture and agriculture production. The farmers generally face many problems in performing the task on the field due to various limitations. The cost is one of the main parameters which need to keep the farmer in a competitive market and reduce the cost of operation as low as possible. Also, the growing population demand more and more food which put pressure on the agriculture sector to raise crop production. In this situation, agriculture robots can play an important role to address the challenges in the farms. A robot can professionally perform the task and can automate the tasks which are difficult for manual labor. These are used in the agricultural lands and they are also completely autonomous. These robots are used in several applications in agriculture and can also work autonomously.

The robotic system has been widely used in industrial production and warehouses in an almost controlled environment. In the early 1960s, the agriculture and forestry sector initiated research into driverless vehicles with a focus on automatic steered system and autonomous tractors. Robotics has made an impact on agriculture and forestry since past few years. The purpose of minimizing the damage to the growing zone of soil tends to cater to the application of automatic vehicle guidance. The interest in the development of robotics system in agriculture has led many experts to explore the possibilities to develop more rational and adaptable vehicles based on a behavioural approach.

To cater the increased demand of food, it will be required that farmers are equipped with tools and methods to improve their yields and make informed decisions [1]. Also, with the increase in population, the agricultural land is decreasing by 1 lakh hectares per year and it is required to double the agricultural produce in the next 30 years to sustain the global food requirements.

The improvements in various technological fields like machine learning, navigation, robotics etc. and their applications in agriculture is required to meet this increasing need. One of the factors is to make the farmland ready for sowing the crops, spraying, etc. and this has to be done in a precise and faster manner to address the latter issues. So, the uses of autonomous tractors for such jobs offer accurate, precise and timely preparation of the fields for the cultivation.

12.1 Introduction

Autonomous tractors or driverless tractors are unmanned ground vehicles mainly employed in agriculture for various purpose like preparation of land for the crops, harvesting, spraying, and other agricultural purposes. They are equipped with GPS, autopilot, cameras, lasers (LiDAR), and other wireless technologies navigation and mutual coordination and offer saving of both the manpower and time. These autonomous tractors can be programmed to navigate their paths through the fields and are designed to avoid the obstacles while doing their jobs. These tractors automate various laborious field jobs and also minimize human intervention in the process.

These autonomous machines are regarded to revolutionize the agriculture industry and offer safety, sharing of resources, economical solutions per square area of land, etc. Several industries like Jhon Dheere, AgraBots, EcoRobotix, RowBot, etc.

Precision Agriculture is fulfilled by adapting suitable monitoring and analysis mechanisms. Autonomous monitoring is getting a new dimension using robots. Agriculture is the trending area to attract new professionals, investors and new companies. The technology in agriculture is not only increasing the yields but the time and labour. This chapter illustrates the use of robotics in crop monitoring and analysis.

8.1 Introduction

Monitoring of agriculture farm enhance the productivity. Evolution in technologies in the era of agriculture brought a lot of innovations. Among these innovations robots are one of them to be implemented in agriculture to enhance profitability and reliability with minimum human resource. At the same robots were deployed to monitor the farming land from weeds and try to remove these. Due to which uses of agrochemicals reduced down the time line. When precision farming came in to the pictures robots are the best use cases. In fig. 8.1 autonomous mechanical robots are shown, which are used to remove the weed from farming land. Robots are equipped with sensor modules, actuators and IoT enabled which makes the things very easy to control from remote area with commands.

Agriculture is the backbone of India. Evolution in technology is bringing new dimensions of conventional agriculture. Looking towards the current food demands it is very crucial to maintain the food supply. According to UN (United Nations), by 2050 the world population will be increased to around 9.3 billion which increases the food need. As the technology in agriculture evolving it seems that we could be able transform conventional farming to unconventional and traditional to modernization by the help of agriculture robots. Agri-bots can be autonomous with human intervention that could perform the task precisely. Chapter illustrates the applications in agriculture seeding. These robots are efficiently used in crop seeding.

7.1 Introduction

The very first agriculture robots were used in the early 1920s along with autonomous vehicle development.

Agro robots are becoming an ongoing pattern in farming with lots of research advancement and business models [1]. Agrarian robots have huge focal points as far as adaptability, flexibility and ecological advantages contrasted with customary horticultural apparatus and speak to an extraordinary resource for cutting edge precision agribusiness. This chapter illustrates the use of modern robots in weed control to help the farmers to gain maximum profit and healthy concerns without using chemicals to do so.

Agriculture irrigation is a crucial part of precision farming. An irrigation system required a lot concentration to grow the plant healthy. A smart irrigation system in an agriculture farm leads to maximum profits in terms of yield. Integrating technologies like IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence) in irrigation accomplish to the human efforts. Controlling of water pumps, sprinklers seamlessly draws the kind attention of farmer to adapt these technologies in their day today farming schedules. This chapter illustrates a wide variety of robots used in irrigation to achieve maximum yield and minimizing water loss. The high scalability and reliabilities of these autonomous robots replicates the potential of agriculture 4.0 in coming future. Advanced robots deployed on the field to monitor the land and pass the information to the controllers and further to the water pumps. Here case study of robots is highlighted to reduce water losses by using nozzles mechanisms.

9.1 Introduction

Agriculture faces many environmental challenges. As far as the irrigation in agriculture is concerned it is very essential to maintain soil hydrated and water level in the field. Robotic irrigation enables autonomous irrigation from remote access [3]. Smart irrigation technique enables a lot of water saving. So robotic in agriculture plays a very crucial role in it [2]. In order to avoid water losses agro robots adapt smart irrigation techniques like droplet irrigation and sprinkling. To maintain sustainability, water resource management is required. Technologies like drones, smart sprinkler based on IoT, smart droplet irrigation used across the globe. These technologies have the greatest impact on productivity and sustainability of the environment as well. As far as the country India is concerned, due to diversity in geographical infrastructures rainfall changes from state to states. So, a wide range of water diversity is found to grow agricultural foods. For example northeast and southern part of India due to heavy rainfall paddy cultivation is preferred since it requires a lot of water. Whereas the northern part of India observe a moderate rainfall, so vegetables and other agriculture foods get cultivated. At the same there are certain states like Rajsthan, Gujrat where very less rainfall occurs through varieties of crops related to dal.

9.1 Introduction

Food quality and safety are central issues in food economics today. A number of developed countries (EU, UK, US) has imposed a number of new regulations to track food products across the supply chain which is forcing the companies to invest in new automated approaches for their implementations. These solutions facilitate better process efficiency with more productivity, quality control in production lines, lower manufacturing costs with higher profit margins, and also help to achieve improved presentation as customers request. The high labour costs in developed countries make cost-cutting inevitable to remain competitive production. The growth in products packaged for the market, the increasingly strict hygiene regulations, the need to reduce risks at work, cut costs, and control product quality are all calling for the development of technologies that enable robots to be used for these tasks. In fact, robotics has a great opportunity in this industry. But the variation in physical properties of various food products and the necessity to avoid damaging them, make it necessary to seek flexible handling solutions for a wide range of products.

The robotics industry is looking into a bright future. As per the report given by the Statistical Department of International Federation of Robotics (IFR), it was projected that between 2014 and 2016 worldwide robot sales will increase by about 6% on average per year. Ten years ago, global sales figures were hovering around 80,000. So, three key factors for the boom - factory modernization, increases in production capacity and rising demand from a number of emerging markets.

Milk revolution with change in technology is gaining attention in India. Robotic milking reduces labour and increases efficiency irrespective of large dairy farms. Harvesting is one of the most labour intensive jobs in agriculture, and by implying the robotics in harvesting, the quantity of the harvested yield can be readily increased, thus saving a lot of time and human resources. This also aids in reducing the farm to market transportation times. The use of robotics can also reduce the seasonal requirement of the manual labour and thus reduce the recurring costs.

The development of robotic dogs for shepherding and herding purposes has found a lot of increment developments. SPOT developed by Boston dynamics and SwagBot developed by University of Sydney, are well-known robots developed in recent times for the purpose.

These robots are equipped with multiple sensors like LiDAR, gas and heat sensors, high-resolution cameras etc. The array of sensors are used to capture the data in real-time and is then used for decision-making processes. Also these reports are built to be rugged and can navigate on a variety of terrains.

In these simulations, agricultural robots can perform various tasks, such as navigating through rows of trees, detecting and localising fruits, and executing precise pruning actions (Shamshiri et al., 2018). The virtual environment allows for testing different path planning and control algorithms, enabling researchers to fine-tune these systems for optimal performance.

Additionally, virtual orchards can simulate various environmental conditions, such as changing light levels, weather patterns, and the presence of obstacles, providing a robust testing ground for robots to adapt to dynamic scenarios. One significant advantage of virtual orchards is the ability to generate large amounts of training data for machine-learning models. Robots can be exposed to many pruning scenarios, enhancing their ability to generalize and perform effectively in real-world conditions. Furthermore, the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) can aid in training human operators to control and supervise these robots, improving their proficiency and reducing the learning curve (Sarker, 2021).

A challenging problem in Mechanical Engineering and robotics is the design of a mobile robot. The robot must successfully traverse through its environment, including rough terrain, grass, hills, etc. For correct positioning of the robot, the wheels of the robot must have good traction and never lose contact with the ground. For improved manoeuvrability the robot must also be able to rotate around a centre point as close to its centre of mass as possible. All of these factors have been considered in the design of a second generation outdoor de- mining robot.

A rectangular frame for the robot allows the easier positioning and accessibility of parts within the robot, which is useful in the development phase. Having the wheels up front helps the robot drive onto a slope. A circular frame for the robot would allow the robot to rotate around its true centre, such a frame, with the wheel axle running along the diameter of the frame would need support at the front and back of the robot.

I. Rock Phosphate

Rock phosphate is natural source of phosphorus. It occurs as natural deposits of rock in Morocco, U.S.A., Egypt, Poland, Russia, Tunisia, Algeria, Brazil, Nauru and some Islands in the Pacific and the Indian ocean. It contains 20 to 35 percent phosphoric acid (P2 O5 ) but this phosphorus is in insoluble form. In India, some of rock phosphates occur in Udaipur and Jaisalmer districts (Rajasthan), Purulia (West Bengal), Singhbhum (Zharkhand) and Mussorie (Uttrakhand). Most of these phosphates are classified as low grade phosphate since its phosphoric acid content is less than 20-25%. The total reserve of low grade rock phosphate is estimated to be around 165 million tonnes of which nearly 70 million are reported to occur in Rajasthan. The other economically viable deposits are in Mussorie (Uttarakhand), Jhabua district (Madhya Pradesh), Singhbhum (Zharkhand) Kasipatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Purulia district (West Bengal). Rock phosphate is the basic raw material for manufacture of superphosphate and other kind of phosphatic fertilizers. It is reported above that India has mostly low grade rock phosphate. Hence India has to spent huge amounts of foreign exchange to import high grade rock phosphate containing around 32-35%, P2 O5 for manufacture of phosphatic fertilizers.

Soilless media or culture

Gravel culture is a general term which applies to the growing of plants without soil in an inert medium into which nutrient solutions are usually pumped automatically at regular intervals. Haydite (shale and clay fused at high temperatures), soft- or hard-coal cinders, limestone chips, calcareous gravel, silica gravel, crushed granite and other inert and slowly decomposing materials are included in the term “gravel”. The more important greenhouse flowering crops include roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, gardenias, snapdragons, lilies, asters, pansies, annual chrysanthemums, dahlias, bachelor buttons and others.

Media ingredients and Mix

Commercially available materials like peat, sphagnum moss, vermiculite, perlite and locally available materials like sand, red soil, common manure/ compost and rice husk can be used in different proportions to grow greenhouse crops. These ingredients should be of high quality to prepare a good mix. Like in a family, more often, there are several members(minerals) within a rock but occasionally just one mineral also makes a rock( olivine in dunite, quartz in quartzite and calcite in marble). The root word petros is of Greek origin, meaning rock and a petrologist is one who specializes in the study of rocks. The three main categories of rocks are distinguished on the basis of their origin. Igneous rocks are the ones that have solidified from a molten state in deep seated conditions, as also on the surface while Sedimentary rocks are formed from the erosion of preexisting rocks and subsequent re-deposition or precipitation of the resulting material at or near the surface. Metamorphic rocks on the other hand, are formed by the action of heat or pressure or both on preexisting rocks.

The theme of rocks is split into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the theme of petrology, petrography and petrogenesis., presents rocks as the storehouses of minerals and their grouping into three classes. The second chapter presents all the important aspects of igneous rocks( plutonic, hypabasal and volcanic) including their forms, texture, structure, chemistry and classification and variation diagrams. It also presents a somewhat sufficient description of different kinds of igneous rocks under the categories of ultrabasic, basic, intermediate acid and alkalic rocks. The chapter ends with an introduction to some of the peculiar kinds of igneous rocks and also presents a brief account of causes of diversity among igneous rocks.

Chapter III is devoted to the study of sedimentary rocks beginning with nature and categories of sediments and general factors that affect sedimentary process. Sequence of breakdown, sedimentary minerals, depositional environment , classification of sediments and sedimentary rocks is the next theme followed by primary and secondary and biogenic structures. The next theme is a description of important sedimentary rocks under different categories ( rudaceous, arenaceous, asrgillaceous and rocks of biogenic origin). The chapter ends with introducing sedimentary rocks as the home for natural resources.

Chapter IV dwells on metamorphic rocks distinguishing between metamorphism and metasomatism. Metamorphic minerals and naming metamorphic rocks is the next theme. Next, agents and types of metamorphism is followed by grade, zones, index minerals and metamorphic facies. Textures, structures and the description of metamorphic rocks comes next. The use of triangular plots in metamorphic petrology is introduced and ends with considering metamorphic process in the light of global tectonics.

The last chapter is a short but important chapter- The Rock Cycle which combines the three important geo-processes of igneous activity, sedimentary process and metamorphism while presenting a birds eye view of them. Rodents are well recognized pests and are considered the number one enemy of man. These animals, though considered primitive, have been so successful and abundant worldwide that they alone account for more than half of the known mammalian fauna. They can subsist on a variety of food and even without water for a long time. Due to their prowess of adaptability, they have successfully adapted to varied ecological and physiological niches, and therefore are inhabitants of practically each and every latitude and altitude. They multiply at super fast speed because they become sexually mature when they are just 6-8 months old. They then pose a challenge to man in all respects. According to Prakash (1988) in India there are 135 species and about 300 sub-species of rodents belonging to 46 genera. At least 15 of these rodent species are known to be the serious pest of public health hazard (Jain and Tripathi, 1988). Rodents not only damage the crops in the fields, where the infestation occurs at all stages of food production, processing, storage and distribution, they are also responsible for a number of diseases in the human beings.

Rodents attack the-crops shortly after sowing, during the vegetative growth and during the ripening of the seed heads. They damage the various crops of the kharif season viz., jowar, maize, ground nut and cotton as well as the crops of the rabi season viz., wheat and barley etc. They damage other crops also which include paddy, sugarcane, soyabean and Bengal gram etc. Hence some well planned rodent management is the need of the time and before going for the planning of any control method in a given situation it is essential to have an estimation of the population and the species involved.

Economic Importance of Rodent Pests

• They consume and damage foods in the fields and in stores. In addition, they spoil it in store by urine and droppings reducing the sale values.
• Due to their gnawing and burrowing habit they destroy many articles (packing, clothes and furniture) and structures (floors, buildings, bridges, etc). By gnawing the electrical cables they can cause fires.
• They are responsible for transmitting diseases dangerous to human and domestic animals.

Among many pests of agricultural crops and stored grain products, rodents are the major pests which do the great damage. Rodents including rats, mice and squirrels are gnawing animals having chisel like teeth. They have highly developed sense of smell, taste and hearing. They are omnivorous and feed on grains, vegetables, fruits, meat and other products in the houses or in the fields. Rats daily consume food equal to about 10 per cent of their body weight and the figure may go up to 30 per cent in case of mice. Rats are among the most destructive pests of paddy in the field causing about 5-10 percent damage. It is estimated that these animals destroy 30 per cent of the total world’s cereal production. In India, 10 million tonnes of food grains are lost every year. It is often said that if rodent ravages could be controlled, a huge amount of food grains can be saved.

Of the 84 species of order Rodentia in India, 50 belong to family Muridae. The important ones belong to two sub-families, viz., Murinae and Gerbillinae. Murinae has 18 species of genus Rattus, 2 of Bandicota, 7 of Mus, 2 of Apodemus and a few each under eight other genera. The sub-family Gerbillinae has 2 species of Gerbillus, one each of Tatera and Meriones. Family Sciuridae has 10 species of flying squirrels and 13 species of tree squirrels in India.

Morphological characteristics

Tecomella undulata is a slow growing small deciduous tree with drooping branches and grey-tomentose innovations which are otherwise glabrous. Leaves are usually opposite, 5- 10 cm long, simple, narrowly oblong, obtuse and entire with undulate margins.

Floral characteristics

Flowers are pale-yellow to deep orange, arranged in few flowered corymbose racemes on short lateral branches. Calyx is campanulate, lobes broadly ovate, obtuse and mucronate. Corolla is companulate, veined, stamens exserted, flaments glabrous, stigma 2-lamillate. Capsules are slightly curved, smooth and seeds are winged.

Distribution

Plant is distributed in drier parts of North-West and Western India extending eastwards to the river Yamuna and ascending to an altitude of 1200 meter in the outer Himalaya.

Rural youth are enthusiastic and they can act as good leaders as their orientation is scientific. Youth support family farming as well as perform gender specific activities. They are said to be the key to sustainable and innovative development. Investment in rural youth is the key to country‘s progress and boost economic opportunities. Rural youth of today want that their capabilities should be utilized for producing food and for conserving productive resources in rural environment. Their mental skills make them different from others so Govt. should adopt such policies that mark the correct value of their skill. ABSTRACT

Agriculture is an important sector of Indian economy that contributes about 17% to the total GDP and provides employment to over 60% of the population. But, the villages are becoming poorer and poorer and only older generations are left there to do the agricultural operations. During the past two years, cost of food items like grains, pulses, oil and vegetables are increasing, month after month. Family farming is the best approach to produce agricultural products economically, utilizing locally available resources and crop residues and manpower very efficiently and sustainably. Family farming is a way of life” - there are unique advantages - the security of access and control over resources, meeting multiple needs of the family – food and income, the relationships with nature, the bonding with the past, present and future; ensuring freedom from external exploitation as well as freedom to do your own way. Family farms as multipurpose enterprises have been serving as buffers in times of disasters, as glue of social bonding, often functioning as a ’value web’ between farming families and communities. The United Nations defines youth as young men and women from age 15 to 24. The present situation of rural youth in developing countries can generally be characterized by illiteracy, lack of educational and training opportunities, unemployment, under-employment and the flight of large numbers of rural youth to the cities. There are serious challenges too – stifling and non supportive policy environment, lack of extension system to handle the farmer’s distinct needs and capacities, and lastly ‘converting’ family farms to be ‘business like’ models. However, successful pilots can become big impact programmes, for instance, as in Andhra Pradesh, through NGO-GO collaboration. Hence, rural youth need to be prepared in: (a) improving their capabilities to produce food and to conserve productive resources in the rural environment, (b) improving skills and abilities in undertaking income-generating activities in rural areas, (c) relieving population pressure and improving nutrition and the well-being of farming families and (d) developing leadership and the ability to work well with others in group and community situations.

A number of animals are used in this country for conducting a variety of experiments. There has been a long felt need to prescribe guidelines and procedures for animal experimentation covering all aspects. The Central Government has constituted a Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) under PCA Act 1960 to ensure that experimental animals are not subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering before, during or after the performance of experiment on them. For this purpose the government has made “Breeding of and Experiment on Animals (Control and Supervision) Rules, 1998 as amended during 2001 and 2006 to regulate the experimentation on animal. Under these provisions, the concerned establishments are required to get themselves registered with CPCSEA, form IAEC, get their Animal House Facilities inspected, and also get specific projects for research cleared by CPCSEA before commencing the research on animals. Further, breeding and trade of animals for such experimentation are also regulated under these Rules.

Calcium, anti-oxidants and certain enzymes are reported to play vital role in extending the shelf-life of harvested produce of many horticultural crops especially fruits. They help in maintenance of cell wall structure. Being an important constituent of cell wall, in the form of calcium pectate, it helps in maintenance of cell wall structure. Antioxidants are highly beneficial in extending the shelf-life of fruits besides maintaining the quality. Similarly, some enzymes play a key role in preserving the fruit quality and prolonging its market life. As some fruits are catergorized under ‘Low volume high value fruits’, it is essential to extend their shel-flife for reducing the post-harvest losses of fruits and also to reap better remuneration. Thus, it becomes indispensable to review the role of Ca, anti-oxidants and enzymes which are beneficial in keeping the harvested produce afresh for a relatively longer period.

Abstract

Research has demonstrated that nutrition plays a crucial role in the prevention of chronic diseases as most of them can be related to diet. Functional food enters the concept of considering food not only necessary for living but also as a source of mental and physical well-being contributing to the prevention and reduction of risk factors for several diseases or enhancing certain physiological functions. One of the most clear objectives of the study of functional foods is to identify and validate biological markers in order to understand the interaction mechanisms between the food component and a body function. Epidemiologic and laboratory data from previous studies suggests that diets rich in fruits and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of various types of cancers. The reduction in cancer risk may be attributed to the abundance of a family of specific compounds referred to as anthocyanins, which are found in various berries. Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments responsible for the blue, purple, and red color in many plant tissues Strawberry is one of “super fruits”, since they can form a significant component of the diet and are a potential resource of functional foods and nutraceuticals due to their antioxidant capacity and nutritional quality. Strawberries contain high levels of anthocyanins and they are also well liked by consumers. Popularity of strawberries in the consumer market makes them an ideal focus for chemoprevention studies. Strawberries are a rich source of phytochemicals (anthocyanins, catechins, the flavonols quercetin and kaempferol, and ellagic acid) and an important source of essential nutrients (ascorbic acid, potassium, folic acid, carotenoids, B-vitamins). Strawberries are consistently ranked among the top food sources of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity; the preventive and therapeutic health benefits of strawberries may be attributed to the synergistic effects of these bioactives and the nutrients contained in the fruit. These bioactive photochemical contribute the major health-promoting function. Strawberries have shown a remarkably high scavenging activity toward chemically generated radicals, thus making them effective in inhibiting oxidation of human low-density lipoproteins. Antioxidant activity of strawberries could contribute to the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. Hence strawberry can be used as a vital and indispensible functional ingredient for the development offunctional foods and nutraceuticals.

Role of water
Water is the principal constituent of living plants as well as animal body. With the maturity of seed, water content decreases. Animal body is composed of two thirds of water – intra and extra cellular fluids, and that a feed is any substance used by the body for building tissue, it is obvious that water is very important nutrient. Experiments have shown that animals may live for 100 days without organic feed, but they may die within 5 to 10 days, when deprived off water. Cell rigidity and elasticity imparts a definite form to body, which may be changed by the liquid content of the cell. Due to its high dielectric constant, oppositely charged ions co – exist in water without much interference. Hydrolysis is an important chemical process in digestion and other metabolism, where H+ and OH- ions of water are introduced into bigger molecules and these bigger molecules are broken down into smaller units.
Lubrication is yet another important function where water prevents friction or drying in joints, conjunctiva, mouth, pleura surrounding lungs, other soft organs. Body heat regulation is carried out due to certain properties – for example, due to high specific heat conducting power, water can carry away heat from the site of production and distributing it throughout the body. Yet another due to such property, highest latent heat of evaporation from skin, lungs or tongue. Oxygen and carbon di oxide are soluble in water, hence gaseous exchange takes place in the tissues, for example, fish. The “aqueous humour” of eye helps to keep up the ‘shape’ and ‘elasticity’ of the eye – ball and acts as refractive medium.

No wonder that late Homi J Bhava advocated on identification and selection of a dynamic scientist and building a laboratory ‘for’ him and ‘around’ him and not the reverse, that is, building a laboratory with certain aim and then search a suitable candidate to steer it. Effective employees can contribute to the effectiveness of the organization. Competent and motivated people can make things happen and enable an organization to achieve its goal. Therefore, organizations should continuously ensure that the dynamism, effectiveness, competency, and motivation of its people remain at a high level. Human resource development is a continuous process to ensure the development of employee dynamism, effectiveness, competencies and motivation in a systematic and planned manner.
