As the seed market has become more globalized, seed trade has seen a rise in competitiveness as well as stricter quality requirements. Throughout the entire seed manufacturing process, thorough management is necessary to ensure high seed quality, from initial planning to final distribution. Among the various seed quality parameters, genetic purity is particularly critical in determining the authenticity and planting value of a seed lot. Genetic purity refers to the degree of purity within a seed lot, the genetic integrity of an F1 hybrid in a hybrid seed lot, or the difference between a submitted seed sample and the stated variety. During manufacturing, achieving complete (100%) varietal purity is challenging, even when recommended protocols are strictly followed. Outcrossing, partial off-type removal, and physical mixing during harvest, storage, or seed handling are a few examples of these factors can result in unintended varietal impurities (Bradford, 2006). Seed firms, producers, and suppliers conduct laboratory-based evaluations for internal quality control or post-control grow-out testing on seed lots to guarantee the necessary levels of purity. Assessments for genetically modified trait purity and the accidental inclusion of genetically modified (GM) seeds in non- GM seed lots are now necessary due to the introduction of transgenic varieties into the worldwide market, which has further broadened the scope of seed purity testing. Thus, seed purity testing is a cornerstone of agricultural production, ensuring that the seeds sown in the fields conform to their designated genetic identity. This process is essential for maintaining varietal integrity, meeting regulatory requirements, and ensuring high agricultural productivity (Sandra et al., 2023). The quality and genetic purity of seeds all directly impact crop productivity, pest and disease resistance, and overall farm profitability. Traditional seed purity assessment methods rely heavily on morphological, physiological, and biochemical traits. These methods include visual examination of seed characteristics, seedling grow-out tests, electrophoresis-based protein profiling, and chemical marker-based identification. However, these approaches often suffer from several limitations, such as the influence of environmental conditions on phenotypic traits, subjective assessments, and the need for significant time and labour. The accuracy and reproducibility of such conventional techniques can be further affected by variations in experimental conditions and the expertise of personnel conducting the tests.The advent of molecular biology has brought a paradigm shift in seed purity testing. DNA-based technologies provide precise, reliable, and high-throughput solutions that overcome the limitations of traditional methods. These molecular approaches allow for direct examination of genetic material, offering greater accuracy in varietal identification, hybrid seed purity assessment, and detection of genetic contamination. DNA markers can distinguish even closely related varieties, enabling seed companies, regulatory bodies, and farmers to ensure the authenticity of seed lots with high confidence. This chapter provides an overview of various DNA-based techniques employed in seed purity testing, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based markers, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies.

Multispectral sensors acquire data across several wavelengths of light, offering insights on plant health and soil properties. Hyperspectral sensors acquire data across numerous tiny spectral bands, yielding enhanced insights into soil composition.
Thermal sensors quantify soil temperature, serving as an indicator of soil moisture content and additional characteristics. The data is subsequently processed and analyzed to generate comprehensive maps of soil variability within a field, offering farmers critical insights to inform their management decisions.

Introduction

Given the interdependence of all ecosystem units and humans, education for supportable sustainable development (ESD) is a crucial educational tool. The Brundtland Report of 1987 also highlights a crucial element when it states that “everyone must have access to the basic necessities of life and the opportunity to realize their dreams of a better life for sustainable development.” In order to alter the prevailing beliefs and attitudes which people have about themselves, society, and the environment, ESD — which is mapped out on the three pillars of the economy, society, and environment—plays a crucial role. The core tenets of ESD are those that support sustainability, including social tolerance, gender equity, intergenerational equity, poverty reduction, and environmental preservation and renovation.

The Rio Declaration, which outlines 27 sustainability principles, makes this claim. As they support the development which is related to education and reorient current education to promote sustainability, these principles can assist governments, society, and educational institutions in routinely classifying information, principles, skills, and values. Globally, education which is related to sustainable development, or ESD, is widely regarded for its substantial contribution to improving livelihoods and advancing society’s transition to sustainability. Although opinions on the viability of sustainable development vary, it is generally agreed that moving toward a sustainable future requires increasing public awareness, education, and training. Notwithstanding the difficulties in defining sustainability, it is evident that many social behaviours— such as those involving pollution, inefficient energy use, water conservation, and other issues—are not sustainable.

Bone is the only tissue in the body able to heal without microscopical scarring. On the other hand fracture healing is a slow process causing long immobilization periods with consequently high costs for fracture healing giving rise to delayed healing, fibrous healing or non-healing with subsequent problems for both, the patient and the orthopedic surgeon. Fracture healing is complex phenomenon which involves numerous cells, regulators of cell function and biochemical interactions in the repair process. The healing potential of bone, in a fracture model is influenced by a variety of biochemical, biomechanical, cellular, hormonal and pathological mechanisms. A continuous occurring state of bone deposition, resorption and remodeling facilitates the healing process.

Biodegradable and bioinert ceramic materials such as hydroxyapatite (HA), tri­calcium phosphate (TCP), aluminum-calcium-phosphate (ALCAP) ceramics provides scaffold to support the attachment and migration of newly formed bone cells into the osseous defect and also help in formation of a vascular network through the newly formed bone. Bioceramic also act as a carrier to deliver stem cells for osteogenesis.

Specific bone-inductive proteins/growth factors can induce bone formation and healing in vivo. These morphogens are therefore, to be an ideal alternative to autogenous bone grafts. The competition between human and livestock population for the existing animal and plant resources has been of great concern to the poultry nutritionists. Today the poultry industry has already challenged by the high price of the feed ingredients. Moreover in the next century there will be a shortage of conventional feed stuffs for use in poultry production. Efforts are on to look forward for the new feed resources and to evaluate them for their inclusion in the poultry ration. However many of the feed stuffs are characterized by the presence of certain incriminating factors. The incorporation of feed stuffs containing incriminating factors may adversely affect the performance of poultry. The nutritional strategy involving the use of feed enzymes offer immense potential to overcome the problems. The use of enzymes in feed mixtures of growing poultry particularly for young chicks has been the subject of much research activity in the recent decades. The interest in the feed enzymes is a reflection in changing the attitude of the society and the economic climate of the feed industry. It has been seen that approximately 187 million metric tons of cereal grains (FAO, 2011) and 26.02 million tons oil seeds as per the trade estimate for 2011-12 are produced in India which yield non starch polysaccharides (NSP) as a part of variety of products.

The applications of enzymes are awe inspiring marvels of nature. Scientists can use enzymes to explore all aspects of biology; from molecules to cells to tissues to organs to organism as a whole. For the purpose of food and drinks, enzymes have been exploited by men for thousands of years without really knowing what they are and how do they work? Enzymes have played a pivotal role in many aspects of life since the dawn of life. Today, biocatalysis is being used as a useful alternative to chemical process technology. The fact that enzymes work under much milder conditions oftemperature, pressure and acidity, thus, obviate harsh processing conditions and thereby decrease the possibility of damage to heat labile substrates and save energy. Enzyme technology being eco-friendly can be justifiably termed as‘Green technology’. Due to their high specificity and high catalytic rate, enzymes prevent wastage and reduce time of processing / manufacturing, respectively. The ability of enzymes to act on wide variety of substrates has made them useful tools to exploit cheaper starting material in food industry. Reportedly, over 45% of the enzymes produced are being used in food industry and remaining is shared by detergent (34.4%), textile (11%), leather (2.8%) paper and pulp (1.2%) and other industries (5.6%). Enzymes serve a myriad of functions in food processing, from maximizing juice extraction of pectin-rich fruits to extending shelf-life in baked goods through slowing starch retro-gradation. Indian food processing industry has seen significant growth and changes over the past few years. Though, the market of enzymes is increasing at a fast pace but most of the enzymes of the food sector are coming from overseas. 1.1. The Role of Enzymes in Nutrient Digestion
Fish diets often consist of a combination of protein, carbohydrates, and lipids sourced from both animal and plant materials. However, many of these feed ingredients, especially plant-based sources, contain complex macromolecules that can be difficult for fish to digest. Fish possess a limited capacity for endogenous enzyme production, which can hinder their ability to effectively break down these complex nutrients. As a result, poorly digested feed not only leads to inefficient nutrient absorption but also contributes to increased waste production, further exacerbating water quality issues in aquaculture systems.

Abstract

Meat is considered to be a highly perishable food commodity because of its biological composition. Thus, to extend its shelf life and maintain its nutritive value, there is an urgent need to find out alternatives for synthetic anti-microbial and anti-oxidants. This will not only serve the purpose of meat product manufacturer’s but will also satisfy the consumers’ demand for minimally processed meat products devoid of synthetic preservatives. This review discusses the natural antimicrobial and anti- oxidants sources viz., various essential oils, their composition and application in different meat and meat products. Essential oils from basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, ginger, basilica, balm, coriander, rosemary and clove have exhibited a better potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent in meat and meat products. They owe their anti-microbial properties to the phenolic compounds present in them. They dislocate cell membrane and disrupt functionality of bacterial cell membrane and eventually leading to the release of intracellular components. However, essential oils are not widely used due to the pungent and intense aroma imparted to the food, thus there is still need to work out on the novel technologies which can not only increase food shelf life but at the same time, are sensorially acceptable to the consumers.

India was a self-sufficient nation in its food production before independence but after the occurrence of various famines, the government in late 1960s started focusing more on the crop production i.e.,green revolution (NAAS 2019). Use of hybrids, fertilizers and plant protection chemicals increased and major investments were made on irrigation structures which led to a massive jump in the production of crops. But with time, the negative externalities caused by green revolution were vividly noticeable. The indiscriminate use of chemicals has debilitated the environment by causing soil depletion, pollution, deforestation, climate change etc. thus affecting the health of human kind. The lofty prices of inputs led the farmers to resort to debt thus falling into debt trap and suicides. In order to address this problem an alternative to the conventional farming is required which is more sustainable and climate resilient. In the mid-1990s, natural farming viz., Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) was demonstrated by Sh. Subhash Palekar also known Subash Palekar Natural Farming (SPNF). It is an agroecology based diversified farming system which involves no financial outlay to purchase essential from outside and makes farming profitable. Mishra (2018) studied on Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) and found that crops grown under ZBNF evinced higher yield than the crops grown under non-ZBNF.

Farm advisory and resource management services play a critical role in assisting farmers in saline agroecological systems by providing expert guidance, information dissemination, capacity building, and policy support (Adak et al., 2020). Farm advisory can play a crucial role in helping farmers understand the intricacies of saline agroecological systems, including the causes of soil salinity, its effects on crop performance, and the necessary strategies for managing these challenges effectively. Farm advisory can assist farmers in selecting suitable crop varieties that exhibit tolerance to high salinity levels. This requires comprehensive knowledge of salt-tolerant crops and and nutritional needs. Providing information on the performance and market

Farm advisories have played a key role in transforming India’s agriculture, helping the country shift from a food deficit to a surplus nation. The Indian public agricultural extension system has been instrumental in this transformation through Green Revolution in the 1960s, but by the end of the 1970s, its role had started to decline. Critics argued that the system had become a monolithic organization without clear objectives (Babu et al., 2013). According to NSSO data, in 2004, public extension services in India, including the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, extension workers, field demonstrations and study tours, reached to less than ten percent of farmers. Instead, farmers relied mostly on other progressive farmers (17%) and input dealers (13%) for information, while mass media including radio, television and newspaper played a significant role reaching to more than thirty percent farmers (Mkhize and Zhou, 2012; Meena et al., 2022a). One of the major constraints in agricultural extension services (AES) in the country is the shortage of extension staff. According to a report, in 2012-13, a single extension functionary served 1,162 operationalholdings, whereas the recommended ratio was 1:400 in hilly areas, 1:750 in irrigated areas, and 1:1000 in rain-fed areas. Input dealers often provide manipulated information specific to the crops grown by farmers, affecting their decision-making process.

Intensive farming operations are particularly vulnerable to an increased risk of biohazards due to their densely populated livestock and close confinement. This increased animal density creates an environment where diseases can spread rapidly if not adequately managed. To mitigate these risks and safeguard the health and productivity of dairy herds, stringent farm biosecurity measures are essential. Farm biosecurity, a comprehensive framework of preventive measures and protocols, has emerged as a pivotal strategy in ensuring animal health and curbing the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). By prioritizing biosecurity, dairy farmers can maintain a healthy and disease-free environment for their animals, ultimately ensuring the quality and safety of dairy products while promoting sustainable and responsible farming practices. In recent years, the interconnected challenges of animal health and AMR have prompted a re-evaluation of agricultural practices and disease management strategies.

What is Farm Biosecurity?

Farm biosecurity refers to the set of practices and measures employed to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases within animal production systems. It encompasses a wide array of strategies, ranging from physical barriers and hygiene protocols to monitoring and surveillance programs. The core principle of farm biosecurity is to mitigate the risk of disease incursions by minimizing the exposure of animals to pathogens, thereby preventing outbreaks and reducing the need for antimicrobial interventions. This strategic approach can be broadly categorized into ‘external farm biosecurity’ and ‘internal farm biosecurity’, each addressing distinct aspects of disease prevention within the farm environment.

12.1 Introduction

The concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere has been rising from historical levels, primarily due to fossil-fuel burning and land-use changes. These gases have the potential to trap energy from the sun, which may result in global warming, and this has sparked a world-wide concern that emissions of these gases should be reduced below the 1990 levels by the year 2012 (Kyoto Protocol). The international community has recognized the need to stabilize/reduce CO₂ and other GHG emission. The types of farm power, farm equipment and machinery have a significant influence on intensification and optimization outcomes, and on profit. However, until now, agricultural intensification generally had a negative effect on the quality of many of the essential resources such as soil, water, land, biodiversity and the ecosystem services which caused a decline in the yield and factor productivity growth rates. Another challenge to agriculture is its environmental food print and climate change. Agriculture is responsible for about 30% of the total greenhouse gas emissions, while being directly affected by the consequences of a changing climate. It is estimated that global conversion of all croplands to conservation tillage (CT) could sequester 5 billion tones of carbon annually.

In India significant efforts are underway to develop and popularize agricultural machinery and tools for resource conservation through the combined efforts of several State and National Institutions, particularly Rice-Wheat Consortium for Indo Gangetic Plains. The new technologies are encouraging the farmers to take up innovative ways of managing their resources for higher productivity and also providing a way to the scientific community to solve emerging problems of climate change. The farm machinery in conservation agriculture (CA) can reduce the emissions of fossil fuels compared to conventional agriculture by up to 60%. However, the largest contribution to mitigate climate change with CA can be obtained from carbon (C) sequestration and the storage of atmospheric carbon in the soil. The C -sink potential of soils varies depending on climate and production system. On an average 0.1-0.5 t. ha^-l y^-l of organic carbon can be sequestered under humid temperate conditions. The biochemical transformation of raw food due to fermentation affects the organoleptic as well as rheological properties of a product. The changes in rheological as well as sensory properties is related with the modification of major component by the action of microorganism. For example, transformation of polysaccharides in bread dough by action of yeast produce ethanol, CO₂ and other simple compound which modify sensory as well as rheology of dough. The major micro-structural, bio-compositional and bio-chemical changes are due to microbial action are frequently described to understand the effect of fermentation on rheological as well as sensory properties of food products. Dietary fibers mostly include non-starch polysaccharides such as celluloses, hemicelluloses, gums and pectins, lignin, resistant dextrins and resistant starches. Based on their water solubility, dietary fibers may be divided into two forms insoluble dietary fiber which includes celluloses, some hemicelluloses and lignins which is fermented to a limited extent in the colon and soluble dietary fiber which includes f-glucans, pectins, gums, mucilages and hemicelluloses that are fermented in the colon. Resistant starch generally considered to be represented by the total amount ofstarch and the product of starch degradation that are not digested in the small intestine andpass into large intestine, and regarded as a component ofdietary fiber. Herbal nutraceutical is used as a powerful instrument in maintaining health and to act against nutritionally induced acute and chronic diseases, thereby promoting optimal health, and quality of life. Dietary spices in their minute quantities has an immense influence on the human health by their antioxidative, chemopreventive, antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, immune modulatory effects on cells and a wide range of beneficial effects on human health. Nutraceutical is the hybrid of ‘nutrition’ and ‘pharmaceutical’. Nutraceuticals, in broad, are food or part of food playing a significant role in modifying and maintaining normal physiological function that maintains healthy human beings. Functional foods are including whole foods and fortified, enriched, or enhanced foods or dietary components that may reduce the risk of chronic disease and provide a health and physiological benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains.

The financial system in India has grown rapidly in the last three decades and more. The functional and geographical coverage of the system is truly impressive. Nevertheless, data do show that there is exclusion and that poorer sections of the society have not been able to access adequately financial services from the organized financial system. There is an imperative need to modify the credit and financial services delivery system to achieve greater inclusion. The implementation of the recommendations made in this Report could go a long way to modify particularly the credit delivery system of the banks and other related institutions to meet the credit requirements of marginal and submarginal farmers in the rural areas in a fuller measure. However, creating an appropriate credit delivery system is only a necessary condition. This needs to be supplemented by efforts to improve the productivity of small and marginal farmers and other entrepreneurs so that the credit made available can be productively employed. While banks and other financial institutions can also take some efforts on their own to improve the absorptive capacity of the clients, it is equally important for Government at various levels to initiate actions to enhance the earnings capacity of the poorer sections of the society. The two together can bring about the desired change of greater inclusion quickly.

India is second among all nations in total entrepreneurship activity as per the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report 2012. The liberalization of the economy since 1991 has paved the way for a huge number of people to become   entrepreneurs. Developing countries like India are striving to be outward looking global economies rather than inward looking local economies. This will be possible only if small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged. The 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) represents the 17th annual global survey of entrepreneurial activity across multiple phases of the business process; the characteristics, motivations and ambitions of entrepreneurs; the attitudes societies have toward this activity; and the quality of entrepreneurship ecosystems in different economies. Sixty-two economies participated in the 2015 survey.
Entrepreneurship plays an eminent function in creating an avenue for employability for rural communities, providing self-employment for those who have started-up a business of their own and enhancing the economic status of the rural sector as well.  Entrepreneurship has transformed many entrepreneurs into successful business persons and generated income for rural communities.

A number of fishery products and by-products like squalene, chitin, chitosan, oyster meat, mussel meat, shark bones etc.

The diversifi cation and modernization of the present agricultural and other related activities supported by efficient on and off farm processing of the commodities for the purpose of value-addition is expected to increase food production and create employment and income generation. Adding value to food commodities after harvest is also aimed at minimizing the losses during storage and to maintain the quality of product. Efficient post-production practices, particularly the preservation and processing of agricultural and allied produces may bring a wide range of benefits to the people in this country, generating job opportunities by opening up village-level processing units. The goals of post-harvest and food processing technology are loss prevention as well as adding value to the harvested biomass, which result in more income to the farmers/processors and better quality produce provided to the consumers. Post-harvest and food processing technology are commodity-and location-specific and it is done at home, village and/or cottage levels at small and large industrial scale. On-farm post-harvest storage and primary processing integrated with production technology help to generate more employment opportunities and additional income for rural people. Minimization of the post-harvest losses is an important means to increase per capita food availability. It also helps to generate more employment and income. Investment in post-harvest measures is more economical and time saving than in productivity to obtain the same amount of a particular commodity. Furthermore, post-harvest measures automatically add value to the raw commodities as they pass on their marketing channels. Adoption of postharvest technologies and value additive measures are very strong tools for rural and social development through employment and income generation. Development and adoption of efficient value addition practices will enhance national food supply and sustain food security even at the household level. Fruits and vegetables processing industries have a good deal of potential in serving the rural economy. First, it helps in generating more employment for rural people. It will also check mobility of rural masses towards urban areas in search of employment. Employment opportunities offered by agroprocessing industries are plenty to the farm population and entrepreneur seeking self-employment. Cottage scale units particularly offer self-employment opportunities. Traditionally women handle food and are familiar with skills of food processing. In order to improve the status of living of woman and rural food processing, low cost appropriate fruit and vegetable processing technologies offer excellent opportunities for production of processed foods. The improvement of status of socially backward and landless labor classes will be possible only through providing non-farm employment at their doorsteps. This will generate a sense of security and confidence amongst rural people for overcoming uncertainty in agricultural income and providing self-employment to the land-less labor. The locally available untapped resources should be used effectively.

Introduction

India is bestowed with a lot of potentials to produce a variety of organic products due to its diversified agro-climatic regions and this is very true in case of Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. It offers a variety of geographic locations suitable for cultivating various food crops such as: fruits, vegetables, food grains etc. Globally, organic farming is cultivated in an area of 57.80 million ha. However, India accounts for just 2.59% of the area. The organic farming is followed in India in almost all the regions with three states Madhya Pradesh (34.34%), Maharashtra (13.19%) and Rajasthan (11.67%) accounting for about 59% of the total organic area of the country. The cultivated land under certification has substantially increased from 1.74 lakh ha in the year 2005-06 to 1.78 million ha in the year 2017-188 (https://www.researchgate. net/publication/338209816_Impact_of_farmer_producer_organization_on_ organic_chilli_production_in_Telangana_India) Agriculture and its allied sectors are the largest source of livelihoods in India. However, India still has many growing concerns. As the Indian economy has diversified and grown, agriculture’s contribution to GDP has steadily declined from 1951 to 2011. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of competence in Indian farmers for selling the crop in remunerative prices in the market. Some of the critical constraints and bottlenecks are lack of infrastructure for storage, transportation, quality control, packaging, price risk management, cool chains, market led extension, and framework for promotion of contract farming (Gohain, 2018). Realizing these issues Government of India under the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation identified Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) as the most appropriate institutional form to mobilize farmers and build their capacity to collectively leverage their production and marketing strength(Ministry of Agriculture, 2013).For analyzing the potential, importance and contribution of FPO in the agriculture sector, the present study aims to discuss the role of FPO in uplifting small and marginal farmers and its impact on the basis of the project undertaken by Silgur Bizat SwayattSahkarita FPO in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand.

3.1 INTRODUCTION

Life cannot be sustained without adequate nourishment. Human beings need adequate food for growth, development and to lead an active and healthy life. Animals satisfy basic food requirement mainly through natural selection. But human beings have access to a wide range of foods to choose to make up their diet. Since all foods are not of same quality from nutritional point of view, man’s ability to meet his nutritional need and maintenance of good health depend upon type and quantity of foods he is able to include in his diet to satisfy hunger. Human beings need a wide range of nutrients to perform various functions in the body and to lead a healthy life. Several reports have shown that adequate intake of fruits and vegetables forms an important part of a healthy diet and low fruit and vegetable intake constitutes a risk factor for chronic diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and cataract formation. The nutrients include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. The foods containing these nutrients which we consume daily are classified as cereals, legumes, nuts and oil seeds, fruits, vegetables, milk and milk products and f lesh foods like fish, meat and poultry. Some foods provide only a single nutrient and some multiples. Scientific evidence indicates that frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables can prevent oesophageal, stomach, pancreatic, bladder and cervical cancers and that a diet high in fruits and vegetables could prevent 20% of most types of cancers. Reports indicate that increasing individual fruit and vegetable consumption by 600 g per day could reduce the global burden of stroke by 19% and decrease the risk of coronary heart diseases by 31% respectively. Realizing the food value of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends per capita use of 120g fruits and 280g vegetables per day.

Abstract

Rice being the major food crop in the world requires a serious attention to protect the crop from variable pest attack under change in climatic scenario. More then 100 species of insects have been recored as rice pest affecting the productivity as well as maintaining sustainability in rice production. Bio-control agents for the control of rice pests are to be systematically evaluted. More than 1500 species of pathogens are formulated as microbiological insecticides. So our current awareness in pest- pathogen-abiotic interactions should be made use in designing the crop protection strategy.

The Indian gene centre has rich diversity in vegetable crops. This diversity includes crops native to India like eggplant, parval, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, Colocasia sp., elephant yam and for centre of diversity for other vegetable crops i.e., Okra, Cucumber, Chayote, Chilli, Cucurbita etc. Rich diversity also occurs in introduced crops such as tomato, french bean, cowpea, leafy brassica, amaranth, yam and in cucurbits, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, coccinea, ash gourd, snake gourd and in bulbous crop like onion and garlic.

Genetic Resources of Vegetable Crops in India

Their diversity and conservation about 400 species constitute the global diversity in vegetable crops. This diversity is mainly distributed in seven-eight geographical regions, which represent the centres of origin and diversity as well. Among these, the regions possessing maximum diversity are the tropical American, Tropical Asian and the Mediterranean (q.v.) regions. In the tropical Asian region, both India and China hold maximum diversity.

The basic question that is often asked is what is a gene, a promoter and a terminator? Genes are the basic units of heredity, composed of DNA sequences, which are transmitted from parents to offspring and which, independently or in combination with other genes, control specific traits in an organism. These traits may be, for example, plant height, flower color, fruit and seed size together with regulatory processes, such as assimilate partitioning and drought resistance. A proper computer based information system is the need of day to organize such complex data in order to draw reliable conclusions which may help in drawing action programmes. This multidimensional nature of information on topography, physico-chemical parameters, socio-economics and fish production data can only be handled and processed by Geographical Information System (GIS).

The resource conservation technologies (RCTs) primarily focus on resource-savings management systems for agricultural production through minimal tillage operation, maintaining soil health for available plant nutrients and conserving soil moisture through crop residues and/or cover crops, and following cropping sequence in spatial and temporal scale. The integration of resource-conserving technologies working in synergy is commonly referred to as conservation agriculture (CA). The CA is “a concept for resource-saving agricultural crop production that strives to achieve acceptable profits together with high and sustained production levels while concurrently conserving the environment” (FAO 2007). The CA envisages four principles: (i) minimizing mechanical soil disturbance and seeding directly into untilled soil, (ii) maximizing crop residue retention and/or growing cover crops, (iii) optimizing diversification of cropping sequences and rotations, and (iv) minimizing mechanical soil compaction through controlled traffic. The CA technologies involving no- or minimum-tillage with direct seeding and bed planting, residue management and crop diversification have potential for improving productivity and soil quality, mainly by soil organic matter build-up. Conservation agriculture systems appear to be appealing options to achieve sustainable and intensive crop production under different agroecological environments because they use available resources efficiently and maintain soil fertility. However, there is a need for wider scale testing of these new technologies under diverse production systems, as the CA technologies are site specific and therefore appraisal of CA is important to have significant adoption (Ramesh et al., 2016)

One key solution to combating malnutrition lies in promoting legumes (pulses), which are nutrient-dense, protein-rich, and vital for both human and animal consumption. Pulses have been a staple in diets
for centuries, providing essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are not only beneficial for human health, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, but they also contribute to sustainable agriculture. Marginal land areas will need to be used to meet the increasing requirement of future generations, especially in developing countries. These marginal areas commonly impose abiotic stresses on crops due to factors such as salinity, drought, flooding, low nutrients and aluminium or heavy metal toxicity. As a consequence, the growth and yield of crops from such areas is typically low and their quality in also poor. Endogenous plant growth regulators play an important role in regulating plant responses to abiotic stress by sensitizing growth and developmental processes. While the physiological and molecular mechanisms linked to the role of ABA and cytokinins in stress tolerance are well explained, there is growing interest to elucidate the associations of auxins, ethylene, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, and polyamines in stress tolerance mechanism and also on possible cross talk mechanism among different growth regulators during stress tolerance acquisition. Identification and characterization of the gene regulating synthesis of different endogenous growth regulators and recent progresses on hormonal signaling, mutant research, and physiological actions have provided scope for manipulating their biosynthetic pathways for developing transgenic crop plants with enhanced abiotic stress tolerance. Researches have also provided some leads in exploiting the potential of growth regulators in enhancing the resistance to abiotic stresses of crops. Plant growth-regulators (PGRs), are biochemical and chemical compounds stimulates plant growth and productivity when applied, even in small quantities at appropriate plant growth stages. These are being extensively used in agriculture to enhance the productivity in agricultural crops. Their central role in plant growth and development is through nutrient allocation and source-sink transitions while most of the plant bioregulators (PBRs) stimulate redox signaling under abiotic stress conditions.

Preference of herbicides for weed management in Agriculture and Horticulture

Weeds are unwanted and undesirable plants which interfere with the utilization of land and water resources and pollute atmosphere with their allergic pollen thus affecting human welfare adversely.  They are the plants out of place, growing where we want other plants or no plants at all.  They compete with desirable and beneficial vegetation reducing the yield and quality of the produce.  The effect of weeds in agriculture or horticulture is greatest.  There is a scanty reliable study of worldwide damage to crop yields due to weeds.  Whether the data are available or not, it is well known that losses caused by weeds exceed the losses from any category of agricultural pest, viz., insects, nematodes, diseases, rodents etc. Weeds account for 45% while insects 30%, diseases 20% and other pests 5% of the total annual loss of agricultural produce186.

Introduction

India is the largest developing economy of the world and about 70 per cent of its population is dependent directly or indirectly on this profession.  To meet the food requirement of the ever-multiplying population of this country, agriculture production has to be maximized by using genetically improved varieties, fertilizers improved implements, seed, and other agronomical technologies. Beside these improvements the agriculture production has remained static for the last decade. For further improvements in agricultural production we have to adopt comprehensive strategies. One of such strategies is the pollination management that is a very vital process of agriculture crop production. Pollination is a process involving reproductive parts of a flower and an external agent in the form of a vector. According to Prof. E.C. Martin, the value of bee pollination of fruits, vegetables and seeds in the United States of America totaled very close to $8 billion in the 1960s; the figure 20 years later is probably close to $20 billion.

Abstract

Studies conducted on the role of honey bees in the pollination and fruit set in apple revealed that Apis mellifera played a significant role along with pollinizer cultivars and favourable weather. Due to the paucity of pollen sources in the orchard, it is desirable to plant atleast three pollinizers like Golden Delicious, Red Gold, Tydeman Early Worcestor, Granny Smith, Lord Lambourene, Mc Intosh and James Grieve. In orchards with low population of native pollinators, introduce A. mellifera colonies at flowering for adequate fruit set (more than 5%) and yield.

Goat is considered as KAMDHENU of small and marginal farmers in India. Agroforestry plays a very important role in three phase goat production system for the demand for natural/organic livestock product. Three phase goat production system i.e. extensive system, semi-intensive system and intensive system are very much supported by agroforestry systems. Goat farming contributes significantly to the family economy, sustainable livelihoods and poverty.

Agroforestry is a collective name for land-use systems and technologies where woody perennials (trees, shrubs, palms, bamboos, etc.) are deliberately used on the same land-management units as agricultural crops and/or animals, in some form of spatial arrangement or temporal sequence. In agroforestry systems there are both ecological and economical interactions between the different components. Agroforestry can also be defined as a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resource management system that, through the integration of trees on farms and in the agricultural landscape, diversifies and sustains production for increased social, economic and environmental benefits for land users at all levels. In particular, agroforestry is crucial to smallholder farmers and other rural people because it can enhance their food supply, income and health. Agroforestry systems are multifunctional systems that can provide a wide range of economic, sociocultural, and environmental benefits. (FAO, 2015)
