The use of sampling in making decisions about an aggregate (or population) is possibly as old as civilization itself. Sampling is first broadly classified into two categories known as subjective and objective. Any type of sampling which depends upon the personal judgement or discretion of the sampler himself, is called subjective sampling. But the sampling method which is governed by a sampling rule or is independent of the sampler’s own judgement is known as objective sampling. The main difficulty with subjective sampling is that the sampler is ignorant of the degree of representativeness of his sample or the accuracy of the final estimates of the population values obtained.

Objective sampling is further subdivided as non-probabilistic, probabilistic and mixed. In non-probabilistic objective sampling, there is a fixed sampling rule but there is no selection probability attached to the sampling unit e.g. selection of every 10th individual from a list, starting with the first, or selecting every 10th line in a paddy field. If however, the selection of the first individual is made in such a manner that each of the first 10 gets an equal chance of being selected, it becomes a case of mixed sampling, partly probabilistic and partly non-probabilistic). On the other hand, if for each individual unit there is a definite pre-assigned probability of being selected, the sampling is said to be probabilistic sampling.

3.1 Introduction
Out of all methods of sampling, the most commonly used procedure in surveys is the stratified random sampling. When population units are of heterogeneous nature and if we select a sample using SRSWOR scheme then the sample selected may not be the representative sample and the estimate worked out from that sample will not be the reliable estimate of the population parameter. The estimate of sampling variance of the sample estimator obtained from that sampling scheme may happen to be very high leading to get a less precise estimate of the parameter. In such type of population, to overcome these draw backs, we use another sampling scheme known as stratified random sampling which is defined as follows.

8.1 Introduction
We have already discussed in details how different sampling schemes can be employed to draw the representative samples suitable to many kinds of population whose sampling units differ in nature. From practical view points, however, it is often more important to be able to make decision about certain unknown characteristics of the population on the basis of informations available in the representative samples which are drawn from the parent populations. Such decisions taken, are known as the “Statistical decisions”. For example, we may wish to decide on the basis of sample data whether (i) One educational system is better than the other or not, (ii) A given six faced die is unbiased (balanced) or not, (iii) A new insecticide is really effective to control the attack of insects or not? etc. Such problems are dealt with in the theory of statistical decisions which uses the principles of sampling theory.

Introduction

Nutritional value of food stuff is defined by its ability to provide nutrients required by the body. Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins are main ingredients in food stuffs. Wheat is an important source of these nutrients. The distribution of nutrients within wheat kernel is typical of many cereals. Nutrients are generally found in the highest concentrations in the germ or embryo and in the aleurone cells surrounding the starchy endosperm followed by bran, whole wheat flour and white flour in decreasing order. Of special importance is that it contains the entire B complex, except for vitamin B12. B vitamins function as cofactors in many metabolic reactions involved in the release of energy. The germ, which includes the scutellum, is especially rich in vitamins B and E, high quality protein, unsaturated fats, minerals, and carbohydrates. The bran consists mostly of the insoluble carbohydrate cellulose, and contains incomplete protein, traces of B vitamins, and minerals including zinc and iron. The endosperm is the largest part of the grain, and consists mostly of the carbohydrate starch, incomplete protein, and trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. Significant variations in the content of grains occur because of variety, crop year, area, fertilizer, and soil type.

INTRODUCTION

Total forest cover in India is 70.17 million ha or 21.34% of the total geographical area according to the State of Forest Report 2015. Of this, 8.59 million ha (2.61%) is very dense forest, 31.54 million ha (9.59%) is moderately dense and rest of 30.04 million ha (9.14%) is open. The trees outside forest (TOF) are estimated to cover 9.26 million ha area which constitutes about 2.82% of the total geographical area of the country.  Thus the total forest and tree cover of the country is 24.16% of the total geographical area. The estimates of total growing stock of forest and TOF are 4.195 billion m3 and 1.573 billion m3, respectively. The total growing stock of wood in the county is estimated to be at 5.678 billion m3 which implies an average growing stock of 72.63 m3 ha-1 in 79.42 million ha of forest and tree cover (FSI 2016).

Abstract

Plant Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving field driven by the advances in ‘Omics’ technologies. This chapter is intended to help both beginners and experienced researchers to develop and apply bioinformatics tools to specific areas of plant genomics research. This chapter will also help plant biologists to access and implement comparative genomics studies of the plant genes of interest. Also discussed are the databases which house the data on plant genes and genomes. The chapter ends with a review of basic Perl Programming for sequence motif analysis beneficial for plant biologists.

Introduction

Ever since the discovery of DNA structure, the field of plant genomics has experienced a dramatic change in the ways scientific problems are approached. With the recent advances in High Throughput analysis clubbed with methods like Physical mapping of genes, RFLP, RAPD, large scale EST sequencing and mRNA protein profiling, there is an enormous amount of biological data available for various analysis. As the amount of data grows tremendously, there is a demand for developing tools and methods to effectively access these assembled data for analysis, modeling, visualization and prediction. In this chapter, we emphasize on some of the key concepts in bioinformatics, tools and databases relevant to plant genomics.

Abstract

Microorganisms constituting the major fraction of the total biomass, are the main source of biodiversity in our planet and play an essential role in maintaining biogeochemical processes, which ultimately regulate the functioning of the Biosphere. Molecular ecological studies of microbial communities revealed that only a small fraction of total microbes in nature have been identified and characterized so far, since the majority of them are recalcitrant to cultivation. The emergence of ‘metagenomics’ have paved ways to the analysis and understanding of the genetic diversity, population structure, and ecology of complex microbial assemblages through culture – independent genomics-based approaches. The concept, metagenome, represents the total microbial genome in natural ecosystem consisting of genomes from both culturable microorganisms and viable but nonculturable bacteria. The construction and screening of metagenomic libraries in culturable bacteria constitute a valuable resource for obtaining novel microbial genes and products. Several novel enzymes and antibiotics have been identified through the metagenomic approach from many different microbial communities. This technology in the near future will provide breakthrough advances in the field of medicine, agriculture, energy production and bioremediation. This paper looks in to the various steps involved in metagenomic studies and how its potential can be utilized in the various aspects of agriculture to improve crop production and protection. The importance and role of bioinformatics in deciphering metagenomic data are also looked into.

3.1 Introduction

Water used for irrigation can be stored mainly in three sources i.e. soil reservoir, surface reservoir or groundwater reservoir. Accordingly the storage system can be defined as soil reservoir storage system, surface reservoir storage system or groundwater storage system. Each of these storage systems has its own merit and demerit. Some of the storage systems though economical but are not helpful to store the irrigation water for longer periods. On the other hand, some other storage systems are very costly, but the irrigation water can be stored there for a longer period. However, before adopting a particular storage system, economics of the system need to be calculated. The cost of installation of the system and the water stored in the storage system and its use as supplemental irrigation to the crops to increase the production in terms of monetary benefit need to be assessed and then the economics of the system should be computed. The storage system that gives maximum benefit-cost ratio and net present value should be adopted for storage of irrigation water. The different types of storage systems are discussed below.

Introduction

Plant products have been used for centuries by humans as food and to treat ailments. Natural medicinal products originating from herbs and spices have also been used as feed additives for farm animals in ancient cultures for the same length of time. Keeping farm animals healthy is necessary to obtain healthy animal products. The main scope in animal husbandry is to ensure good performance of farm animals and get quality animal products, which can be achieved only with the effort to keep the animals healthy. Only quality feed together with proper hygiene, potable water and management can ensure the production of nutritious animal products with desired organoleptic properties (Saxena, 2008). A ban of antibiotics as feed additives in animal nutrition is realized since 1986 in Sweden and later on to various countries. A general ban is foreseen in some years from now, because of the increased occurrence of pathogens resistant against therapeutical antibiotics used in animals and humans. With the restricted use or ban of dietary antimicrobial agents we must explore new ways to improve and protect the health status of farm animals, to guarantee animal performance and to increase nutrient availability (Wenk, 2003). In this aspect, herbs and spices are not just appetite and digestion stimulants, but can, with impact on other physiological functions, help to ensure good health and welfare of the animals, what can positively affect their performance.

Introduction

Mycotoxins are substances produced by fungal infections which in some cases do protect plants or plant seeds against parasites (Schardl et al., 1996). However, upon ingestion, inhalation or dermal contact, these mold producing substances are poisonous to vertebrates. Even with more than 100,000 species of fungi known, only some of them are active mycotoxin producers. The fungi species which are known to produce the most hazardous mycotoxins in agriculture and in animal production are Fusarium, Aspergillus and Pencillium spp. Mycotoxins vary greatly regarding their toxicological effects as they do not belong to a single class of chemical compounds (Jewers, 1987). The environmental conditions in which they are preferably produced also differ. Fusarium toxins, such as trichothecenes, Zearalenone and fumonisins are commonly produced on the field, whereas aflatoxins and ochratoxins are produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium spp. mainly after harvest and during poor storage conditions.

Introduction

Food security is an agricultural issue that has political connotations in the world and more strikingly so in the developing world, where systems of governance has assumed and lost power on this issue. Agriculture not only contributes to the overall growth of the economy but also provides a vital livelihood base, employment and food security to the majority of the country’s population. Recent food price hikes have drawn the attention of the world’s policy-makers and news media to food security which triggered a wide variety of policy responses throughout the world. It threatens the food crisis and livelihood of millions of peoples suffering from hunger and poverty.

Introduction

The concept and impetus for IPM grew out of the discontent with using a purely insecticidal approach to insect control in many areas in the mid of twentieth century. Excessive use of pesticide and growing needs of people has triggered several consequences such as resistance and resurgence of pests, destruction and elimination of natural enemies, effect on non target organisms, environmental pollution, disruption in food cycle and food web and residues in food commodities and pesticide poisoning. Less knowledge about biocontrolagents/natural enemies and their non-availability at right time is the key hurdles for farming communities to adopt the IPM practices on their farm. However, pesticides are still a significant component of many control programs and their negative environmental and health impacts have stimulated the research to develop alternate pest management strategies, such as biological control (BC) and other compatible, safe and sound control practices. Some remarkable early successes for both the control of insect pests and weeds (e.g. the cottony cushion scale Icerya purchase (Maskell) by the vedalia beetle Rodolia cardinalis (Mulsant) in California; the prickly pear cactus Opuntia stricta (Haw.) by the moth Catoblastis cactorum (Berg) in Australia certainly were an impetus for further research in BC field. Although the levels of success have been variable, biological control is still considered as an important means of pest control, either alone or as component of integrated management programs (Jervis, 2005; Wajnberg et al., 2007).

Introduction

Pheromones are chemicals emitted by living organisms to send messages to individuals of the same species. The class most widely explored are the sex pheromones produced by female moths which are used to attract conspecific males for mating. Bombykol, the sex pheromone of the silk moth, was first synthesized in 1959.

During the past 40 years, pheromones of hundreds of insect species have been chemically elucidated, including the sex pheromone of the codling moth. Its main component is (E, E) 8, 10-dodecadien-1-o1, a primary alcohol containing a straight chain of 12 carbons and two conjugated double bonds. Other moth pheromones are hydrocarbons, epoxides, acetates or aldehydes. These molecules all vaguely resemble fatty acids, from which they are indeed biogenetically derived.

Most pheromones consist of blends of two or more chemicals which need to be emitted at exactly the right proportions to be biologically active. The female effluvia or sex gland can contain additional compounds which are related to the pheromone components and whose biological function is often unclear. On the other hand, many attractants of male moths have been discovered simply by field screening. In several cases it could later be shown that the attractant found with this technique was identical to the natural pheromone produced by the female. In most others, the composition of the true pheromone is still unknown.

Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system (Rogers, 1962, 1983, 1995, 2003). It is a broader term, which encompasses unplanned as well as planned and directed spread of an innovation. Dissemination is planned and directed diffusion of an innovation. In case of Integrated pest management which is a complex sort of decision making process, many technology transfer approaches were/are tried for dissemination of IPM technologies to farmers. These include radio, television, print media, training and visit, field days, demonstrations, extension field visits and participatory learning approaches like participatory technology development (PTD) and farmers field school (FFS). While Training and Visit (T&V) system failed, Farmers Field School (FFS) approach of educating farmers followed by ‘Community IPM’ activities and ‘Farmers to Farmer’ approach registered success in IPM implementation in developing countries (Matteson, 2000).

Introduction

Recent advances in bioinformatics such as microarray analysis are bringing about a revolution in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying normal and dysfunctional biological processes. With the help of microarray technologies, biologists are currently capable of observing the abundance of transcripts from tens of thousands genes in biological samples, enabling the exploration of the dynamics of transcription and interaction between genes on a genome-wide scale. With the accumulation of gene expression dataset, the challenging task of all microarray experiments is how to extract meaningful and trustworthy information out of thousands of genes that do not contribute in the designed experiments. To achieve this goal, many rigorous mathematical tools and computational software were introduced to the field, like statistical techniques for data normalization, clustering algorithms, class prediction methods, ANOVA, and gene-gene interaction studies. Microarray technology has been used widely in various areas of agriculture and allied field. Application of statistics in microarray is limited particularly in experiments involving fishes. In this chapter it is attempted to present various statistical methods applied to accessory microarray experiments with illustrated example of fish microarray data.

Ethylene is a primary plant hormone involved in the senescence of plant tissues including flowers and leaves. In carnation, inhibition of the synthesis or action of ethylene delays the onset of senescence symptoms and lengthens the vase life of flowers. Leaves of cut chrysanthemum of some cultivars frequently become yellow, sometimes prior to onset of flower senescence, in response to exogenous ethylene. Generation of transgenic plants with suppressed production or action of ethylene is an excellent way to lengthen the longevity of these ornamental plants. This paper reviews our studies on generation and characterization of carnations with reduced ethylene production and chrysanthemum with reduced sensitivity to ethylene.

Sustainability refers to productive performance of a system over time. It implies use of natural resources to meet the present needs without jeopardizing the future potential. The Technical Advisory Committee of the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research has defined sustainability as “Successful management of resources for agriculture to satisfy changing human needs while maintaining or enhancing the quality of the environment and conserving natural resources” (TAC, 1989). A sustainable system must be sustainable both ecologically and economically.

During the past several decades, production of horticultural crops has undergone a tremendous change in both developed and developing countries due to the development and use of fertilizers, pesticides, mechanization, soil fumigation, container production in soil-less media, breeding, micropropagation, pathogen elimination and a number of other innovations for attaining its future stability and sustainability. Recently, in modern horticulture, enhanced productivity depends heavily on inputs of fertilizers and pesticides to maintain an economic level of productivity. On the other hand, social and economic pressures are demanding that agricultural/horticultural practices, that have a damaging impact on the environment and pose risk to health of mankind, be curtailed. Thus throughout the world, agriculture including horticulture is at crossroads in terms of its future stability and sustainability. The solution for the above lies in developing new technology with reduced use of fertilizer and pesticides besides maintaining a sustainable level of productivity. The increased concern about the sustainability and undesirable side-effects of chemistry-based agriculture is prompting many researchers to more seriously evaluate alternative approaches. One such effort was put forth in the management of microbes that live in the rhizosphere soil around the roots of nearly all terrestrial plants. It has been believed that the main orchestrators of microbial activity in the rhizosphere are mycorrhizal fungi.

Macroclimate: General climate prevailing over a large area, considered as a unit. The opposite is microclimate.

Macroevolution: Major phylogenetic patterns that develop over wide spans of geological time.

Macrofauna: The larger members of a particular fauna. Open to different levels of interpretation for they may be larger vertebrates or alternatively the larger insects of a habitat. The opposite is microfauna.

Macrogamete: The female gametocyte of a malaria parasite, Plasmodium spp; see also Microgamete.

Macrophage: An eater of large particles; see also Microphage.

The aim of mating systems are either to increase or decrease the homozygosity of the progeny compared with the parents or in some cases, to maintain the degree of homozygosity unchanged. This aim constitutes the basis of the following classification of mating systems:

Plant requires food or nutrients or elements for its growth and development which are absorbed through soil. Adequate supply of plant nutrients is important to ensure efficient crop production. Plant nutrients are essentially applied through manures and fertilizers. Application of manures and fertilizers to the soil is one of the important factors which help in increasing the crop yield and to maintain the soil fertility. 
Manures
Manures are plant and animal wastes that are used as source of plant nutrients. They release nutrient after their decomposition. These are relatively bulky materials, such as animal or green manures, which are added mainly to improve the physical condition of the soil, to replenish and keep up its humus status, to maintain the optimum conditions for the activities of soil micro-organisms and make good a small part of the plant nutrients removed by crops or otherwise lost through leaching and soil erosion.

Definition

It is one of the important portion of milk which forms a fatty layer on top of milk when left un-disturbed. It is a prime component of milk and comprises mainly of milk fat. It may be defined as “that portion of milk which is rich in milk fat” meaning portion of milk into which larger portion of milk fat has been gathered.  According to FSSAI, 2011 Malai and Cream are defined as –

Malai means the product rich in butter fat prepared by boiling and cooling cow or buffalo milk or a combination thereof. It shall contain not less than 25.0 per cent milk fat.

Abstract

Continental erosion and fluvial transport play an important role enhancing mobilization of organic carbon from soils and transferring this pool to the ocean through downstream rivers and streams. The Ganges-Brahmaputra river system represents one of the largest transporters of terrestrial carbon to ocean. Intensive agriculture in the Ganges basin coupled with atmospheric deposition (AD) of nitrogen may render the soil more prone to erosion loss of carbon and nutrients. The aims of this study were to quantify atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (AD-N) in the watershed and to assess the influence of land use and AD-N on carbon and nitrogen transport in Ganga River. We collected samples in summer low flow along a 1595 km long transect of the river to assess the status of DOC under variable land use and AD-N input and, at monthly intervals along a 35 km long transect to understand seasonal patterns and the influence of local control. Our study shows average deposition of reactive-N (NO₃^- + NH₄⁺) range from 19.7 kg ha^-1yr-1 in upper stretch to 38.6 kg ha-1yr-1 in the middle stretch. The AD-N in lower stretch was almost similar to the values recorded in the middle stretch of the watershed. The average concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the river range from 0.62 to 5.3 mg L-1 and 52.0 to 385.6 µg L-1 respectively. The land-derived carbon and nitrogen emerging in surface runoff showed positive correlation with AD-N and the river DOC showed synchrony with land use, AD-N and autochthonous carbon pool. Our data indicate that DOC in Ganga River is rising and the land use together with AD-N is an important driver of rising DOC. We suggest that future climate model should consider large scale regional time series data on changing state of atmosphere-land-water coupling and associated shifts in carbon and nutrient transport of major rivers. This has relevance predicting region specific climate change drivers and preparing action plan for integrated river basin management (IRBM).

Abstract

While multiple species interact with each other in variable environments, they employ a variety of interaction strategies to withstand variation in environmental conditions. Phenotypic plasticity is one such mean allowing species to cope with environmental challenges often posed by the variation in consumer pressure, disturbances, and predation risks. In response to these and other environmental cues, expressed phenotypes can alter the sign and strength of interactions among species as these responses are often reflected in increased or decreased species competitive or facilitative abilities. Besides phenotypic plasticity, species interactions also depend on continued variation in abundances or densities of interacting species commonly termed as density-dependent interactions. Such density-dependence follows the law of diminishing returns, which means that while an individual species adds a density-dependent weight to the performance of other species, with increasing accounts, at a certain level of interaction it provides diminishing returns resulting in decreased population growth of the species. Thus, species interactions in variable environments hold two interdependent opposing forces: the growth-escalating and the growth-diminishing forces. The first one is resulted from adaptive phenotypic responses to variable environments and the second one is resulted from dynamic changes of abundances or densities of interacting species. Based on this conceptual framework, we describe community dynamics that are shaped by the balance of these two forces in variable environment. By analyzing these dynamics, we then seek underlying mechanism of Grim’s classic humped-back model of productivity-diversity relationship and also provide an alternative explanation for the intermediate disturbance hypothesis.

The soil microorganisms thrive on organic matter in soil by feeding readily on soluble substrates and rather slowly on insoluble substrates. Organisms derive carbon and energy during the process of organic matter decomposition and release organically-bound carbon, thereby decrease C :N ratio and utilize nutrients. Any decrease in organic matter content in soil is likely to affect the microbial biomass and their activities thereby influence the soil fertility and productivity. It is, therefore, imperative to recycle the organic matter in soil in whatsoever form it may be. The raw organic matter requires appropriate treatment to boost decomposition process.

In agricultural practices pesticide application is an inevitable factor for maintaining high crop productivity and is currently an integral part of modern farming. Pests (insects, microbes and weeds) cause approximately 20-30% loss in crop production so making pesticide use indispensable for crop protection.
 
Pesticide : A pesticide may be defined as ‘any agent or chemical or a mixture of chemicals/ substances intended to prevent, destroy, repel or irritate one or more pest populations causing economic loss in crop production’. Worldwide more than 450 active pesticide chemicals formulated into more than 10,000 commercial products are currently used by farmers. The most worrying aspect is that about two-third of the 800 chemicals tested so far have been found involved in causing or promoting tumor in rodents. Yet more than 50,000 synthetic chemicals/formulations remain untested so far.

Introduction

The tropics extends on  vast region of the earth surface ranging from 23½^°C North to the Tropic of Cancer and 23½^°C South to the Tropic of Capricorn. Several countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America include tropical areas. The tropical regions are the warmest area on the earth with average temperatures ranging between 20^°C and 35^°C. More than 80 % of the area in tropics supports forests and savannah and only 15% is under deserts, shrubs and grasses. About 5% of the area is under mid or high altitude with moderate climatic conditions. Evidently, the tropics support great diversity of physical and climatic conditions in different ecologies and different ecosystems. Temperature and daylight length is much higher throughout the year which induces more number of insect pests, their generations causing more damage in tropics. The increased menace of insect pests requires frequent and repeated use of chemical pesticide to mitigate the insect pest damage.

INTRODUCTION

Food processing is necessary for the conversion of raw food products in to finished products with desired textural, sensory and nutritional attributes. This is required to be done mainly due to seasonal production and facilitating non-seasonal availability of different commodities. Stages of processing are primary and secondary. In primary processing raw material is converted into food commodities, while in secondary processing commodities are converted into edible products. Processing is mainly done to convert the products into edible forms, to extend shelf life, availability, accessibility and also to provide variety into the form of value added products. Processing of products destroys inhibitors, microorganisms, retards physico-chemical and biochemical deterioration, maintains good sensory properties, preserves and enhances the nutritive value. Unit operations involve phase changes and sometimes chemical reactions also, which are undesirable as they cause inferior quality of the product (Gekas 1992). Different processes like separation, assembly, preservation and packaging are broader classification for unit operations in food processing (Saravacos and Kostaropoulos 2002).

INTRODUCTION

Fruits and vegetables are historically important constituents of human diet and the growing awareness of consumers about the beneficial effects of these commodities could result in enhancement of global trade involving fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. Emergence of postharvest handling of fresh fruits and vegetables facilitated global trade of these commodities. The developed countries started realizing the export potential of these commodities by development of adequate value addition in terms of pretreatments, shelf life extension and packaging besides grading and other associated packing house operations. However, the trade concerning fresh fruits and vegetables could never come out completely from problems related to pesticidal residues, spoilage, bulkiness of the commodities involving transportation of inedible portions and excessive packaging costs arising out of bulkiness. The other problems associated with fresh produce include mandatory requirement of specific storage temperatures with refrigeration as the primary means of regulation of metabolic rate.

INTRODUCTION

Packaging is an important aspect in modern life and in fact the word ‘packaging’ developed a literal value indicating presentation of an issue or material in a comprehensive and compact manner. Food packaging has become a revolutionary trend and plays a dominant role in the promotion of marketing of various fresh and processed food products. The reason could be a number of aspects inclusive of protective, legal and aesthetic elements. The industrial revolution in the late 18th century caused major impact on manufacturing process. Without appropriate packaging no food is acceptable and even in the common household food packaging is being practiced in its own way to render food safety and convenience for various culinary operations. Therefore, food packaging needs to be considered as an essential element of food processing and marketing and it is one of the key areas in food technology making rapid strides in research and development.

F- distribution : A probability density function that is used in analysis of variance and is a function of the ratio of two independent random variables each of which has a chi-square distribution and is divided by its number of degrees of freedom.

F₀ value : It is used to express F-value when z =10^ºC/18^ºF and the temperature is 121.1^ºC. It is the number of minutes at a specific temperature (250^ºC) required to destroy or kill a stated number of microorganisms and has specific z-value. It is also called reference value.

Oolichan (Thaleichthys pacificus), a small anadromous smelt also known as “savior fish”, were a necessity of life for Pacific Northwest Coastal and adjacent interior indigenous peoples, as they were the first fish to return to the rivers after winter and produced not only tasty flesh but also a nutritious oil, or “grease.” A focus of the traditional oolichan culture is the Nass River of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. The valleys and mountains surrounding the Nass River are the traditional homelands of the Nisga’a people, whose technological innovations including implements, buildings, and landscape structures facilitated fishing, production, and preservation of oolichan, as well as salmon. Over thousands of years, the Nisga’a developed plant-based technologies for use in the oolichan fishery and for preparation trade of rendered oolichan “grease”. In turn, structures and implements associated with the oolichan fishery facilitated knowledge exchange across generations, since the oolichan processing areas and fishing camps were the places where elders conveyed their cultural and ecological knowledge to younger people. 1.0 INTRODUCTION

Plant parasitic nematodes are among the major soil-borne crop pests that cause significant economic losses to a wide variety of crops. They cause an estimated annual crop-yield loss of US$78 billion worldwide which warrants for effective control strategies (Sasser and Freckman, 1987). Nematodes have the greatest impact on crop productivity when they attack the roots of seedlings or young plantlets (Ploeg, 2001). Nematode feeding also creates open wounds that provide entry to a wide variety of plant-pathogenic fungi and bacteria. These microbial infections are often more economically damaging than the direct effects of nematode feeding.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
 
Coriander is a native of southern Europe and Asia Minor. In a treatise, Farrell (1999) has described coriander as indigenous to the Near East and Mediterranean region of North Africa and Southern Europe. According to early Sanskrit writings, coriander was known as far back as 5000 BC for its cultivation in India. Persia grew coriander 3000 years ago for adding fragrance to hanging garden of Babylon and seeds were found in Egyptian tombs of 960 BC. It has been used as an ingredient to traditional and folk medicine in the Middle East and Asia for more than 2000 years. There is archaeological evidence of coriander cultivation from Early Bronze Age in Macedonia (Fragiska, 2005)

3.1 Integrated Insect Pests Management

1. Anar butterfly [Deudorix (Virachola) isocrates Fabricus]

Pomegranate fruit borer or pomegranate butterfly is the most widespread, polyphagous and destructive pest distributed all over India and common in Asia. Peak incidence is during the month of August in monsoon season, while it is more during November/December in winter crop. Infestation from flowering to button stage causing loss up to 50 per cent of the fruit. Adult bluish brown butterfly, female with V shaped patch on forewing. Full-grown larvae are dark brown with short hair and white patches all over the body and measures about 16 to 20mm long. The larvae bore into the pomegranate fruits soon after hatching. Once inside the fruit, larvae (approx 2cm length) feed on the flesh and seeds.  The bored hole is plugged by the last abdominal segment of the larva. When fully grown, the larva comes out by boring through the hard shell and spins a web, which ties the fruit, stalk to the main branch. Offensive smell and excreta of caterpillars coming out of the entry holes with excreta stuck around the holes. The fruits rot and drop off. The holes ultimately expose the rest of the fruit to disease, and typically rot off the tree.

It has been a general notion that if an experiment is conducted under identical conditions, values so obtained would be similar. But the experiences of people have dispelled this belief. Observations are always taken about a factor or character under study, which can take different values, and the factor or character is termed as variable.
Hence, we have a set of outcomes (sample points) of a random experiment. A rule that assigns a real number to each outcome (sample points) is called random variable. The rule is nothing about a function of the variable, say, X, that assigns a unique value to each sample point of the sample space.

8.1 Statistical Hypotheses

in attempting to reach decisions about the populations, it is useful to make assumptions or guesses about the populations involved. When the assumption or statement about a phenomenon occurring under certain conditions is formulated as proposition it is called a scientific hypotesis. We can construct criteria by which a scientific hypothesis may be ‘the  yield of a new paddy variety will be 3500 kg per hectare’. In statistical language it may be stated as ‘the random variable (yield of paddy) is distributed normally with mean 3500 kg/ha’. Such a statement or proposition about the probability distribution of a random variable is called the statistical hypothesis.

The application of agricultural chemicals for control of insects, pests, fungi, weeds and plant diseases plays an important role in crop production. Before 1980 few chemicals were known for control of plant pests.  The chemical pesticides have played an important role in the rapid advancement of agricultural production. Chemical pesticides are getting popular due to non availability of labours especially for weeding operation during kharif season. The chemical pesticides and herbicides are applied with the help of different types of sprayers and dusters.

Abstract

With the growing awareness on the benefits of organically cultivated food, biofertilization and biocontrol by plant-associated bacteria are being used as alternatives to chemical fertilizers and conventional control methods. It therefore becomes essential to continue surveying different agroecological niches to identify plant growth promoting bacteria suitable for each microenvironment. Species belonging to the genus Enterobacter are versatile colonizers of numerous environmental niches. Several species and strains from this genus have also been routinely recovered from the rhizosphere of crops such as rice, canola, cucumber, banana, potato, corn, tomato and cotton. These isolates have been studied and shown to have beneficial effects on plant growth and protective action against phytopathogens.

Abstract

Discovery of the agricultural utility of microbes during the later part of the eighteenth century, led to the formulation and utilization of superior microbial strains as biofertilizers, for a wide variety of crops and growing conditions across the world. Though microbial inoculants have been in usage for almost two centuries, they are yet to capture the collective imagination of farmers across the globe, which is essential to meet the larger objective of reducing chemical input usage in cropping systems. One probable reason for this is the existence of large growing tracts that are subject to various abiotic stresses of atmospheric and edaphic origin, which limit the proliferation and efficiency of the microbial strains that are commonly used in inoculant production.  This is obvious, since unlike chemical fertilizers, microbial cells being living systems need to grow and thrive in the introduced eco-systems in order to achieve the desired effects of inoculation. But unfortunately microbial inoculant technology has largely adopted the one size-fit all mindset, which had led to failures of microbial inoculants especially in abiotically stressed growing environments. In such a scenario it would be wise to adopt a location or region specific approach for the selection of superior and locally adapted microbial strains for inoculant production.

Plant analysis includes tests on fresh tissue in the field and analysis of total nutrients in plants in the laboratory. Plant analysis is based on the relationship between nutrients in a plant and nutrient availability in a soil. Plant analysis is not a direct method of soil fertility evaluation, but it can serve as a valuable supplement to soil testing in the task of soil fertility evaluation. Plant analysis is useful in confirming nutrient deficiencies, toxicities and imbalance and identifying hidden hunger. Plant analysis generally provides more current plant-based information than soil testing, entails more effort in terms of sampling, sample handling and analysis and, perhaps, expensive.

Certain constituents associated with plants are toxic. When such items are consumed by men and animals, they become hazardous. Mold growth on food items may be the cause of toxicity. Some of them are called mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are the best examples of such a group of compounds. Sometimes processing also produces some toxins. Fumigants, smoke and some metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic etc.) used for such purposes are some such toxic constituents. Pesticides used in protecting the crops and grains during storage remain on the items and the residues are hazardous.

Nitrate reductase (NR) catalyzes the reduction of nitrate to nitrite, which is the first step in the nitrate assimilation pathway, but can also reduce nitrite to nitric oxide (NO), an important signaling molecule that is thought to mediate a wide array of developmental and physiological processes in plants. Accordingly, the amount of NR protein and its catalytic activity are closely controlled in the cell. This chapter focuses on the posttranslational regulation of NR activity, which has been known for some time to involve reversible protein phosphorylation. The hinge 1 region of NR contains the serine-534 regulatory site, which when phosphorylated can bind a 14-3-3 protein resulting in inhibition of NR activity. This fundamental mechanism underlies the rapid modulation of NR activity in leaves in response to light/dark transitions, and the activation of NR that occurs in response to hypoxia (e.g., as with soil flooding). Recent results suggest that the basis for hypoxia-induced NR activation, which is thought to be essential for plant survival, may involve reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as H₂O₂, that are produced in response to many plant stressors including hypoxia.

Abstract

Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient controlling production of all agricultural systems. Application of N fertilizer has increased food production tremendously all over the world. However, it also contributes towards global warming and ozone layer depletion through emission of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas (GHG). Therefore, there is a need to assess the possibilities of N management for climate change abatement and food security enhancement, while minimizing environmental and human health impacts. In this chapter, role of gaseous-N emission on N use and various mitigation options for Indian agriculture have been discussed. For the base year 2007, the direct and indirect N₂O emissions from Indian agricultural soils was estimated to be 136.29 Gg (35.3 Tg CO₂ equivalent) and 30.61 Gg (5.8 Tg CO₂ equivalent), respectively.

Southern Blotting
Introduction

Southern hybridization was named after Edward M. Southern who developed this procedure at Edinburgh University in the 1970s. To oversimplify, DNA molecules are transferred from an agarose gel onto a membrane. Southern blotting is designed to locate a particular sequence of DNA within a complex mixture. It is also called Southern blotting since the procedure for transfer of DNA from the gel to the nitrocellulose filter resembles blotting. In Southern hybridization, a sample of DNA containing fragments of different sizes is subjected to electrophoresis using either polyacrylamide or agarose gel.

Abstract

Ever growing population and associated food scarcity are the major issues of concern globally. Microorganisms are the ultimate solution for addressing this severe problem in association with recent advances made in genomics and molecular biology. Many bacterial and fungal species which are in association with plant rhizosphere soil can immensely contribute in better growth and developments, ultimately leading to better yield. Exploring these novel organisms happens to be the need of an hour. Metagenomics and next generation sequencing technologies can contribute in identifying those microbes which are otherwise impossible to cultivate traditionally.

Abstract

Soil salinization is an important factor limiting crop production, mainly in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Nevertheless, plants naturally have evolved several physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms to establish and thrive in salt stressed soils. In addition to breeding crops for salt tolerance, recent emphasis is on exploring the possible role of plant-microbe interactions in amelioration of salt stress in plants. It is now well established that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis alleviates the effect of salt stress in plants. Further, available evidence does suggest that AM symbiosis regulates many of the plant’s salt stress alleviation mechanisms. However, the molecular basis for many of these mechanisms is yet to be ascertained. In this chapter, we summarize the current knowledge on the role of AM symbiosis in alleviation of salt stress in crop plants, which now appears to be a promising strategy to improve crop yield in salt stressed soils.
