Animals need to function efficiently during reproduction in order for a dairy production system to be sustainable. This is necessary to produce milk, the primary product of interest, as well as to supply replacement animals. From the perspective of reproduction, delayed puberty, lengthy calving intervals, limited productive lives, and high calf mortality are the key variables that cause economic losses. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench), otherwise known as Lady’s finger or Bhindi is an annual malvaceous plant and the sixth important vegetable crop cultivated throughout the country mostly in kharif and summer seasons. Though it is reported to be originated from tropical and sub-tropical Africa, but it has gained much importance in India as the secondary centre of origin. India ranked first in okra production in the World and major okra producing Indian states are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Assam (Anonymous, 2011).

In countries like India, where majority of the population are vegetarians, leguminous vegetables serve as the major source of protein in the diet. In the developing third world countries, especially for the poor, the major protein source in the diet are vegetable legumes. Most leguminous vegetables are rich in phosphorus, calcium, iron and a number of essential vitamins. Crops like soybean, groundnut and Bamabara groundnut are also rich in fats which are needed by the body to absorb vitamin A.

Plant abiotic stresses are external and nonliving factors that have harmful effects on plants. A non-living factor must exert influence on the normal range of environmental variation to adversely and significantly affect the plant performance or the physiology of the organism. Abiotic stresses are the most harmful factors affecting the growth and productivity of crops worldwide, resulting in a yield reduction ranging from 10% to 100%. They are most harmful when occurring together with other abiotic stresses and their effect in yield will only worsen with the climatic changes experienced now and expected to be more severe in the future.

2.1 Introduction

Cabbage is consumed in the raw state as well as in cooked. The word cabbage has been derived from the French word Cobache, meaning head which is best described as single large terminal bud comprised of tightly overlapped numerous leaves attached to an unbranched short stem. It is known for its rich source of vitamin A and C. It is an effective curative against scurvy disease. Cabbage leaves are low in calories (24 %), fat (0.2 %) and carbohydrates (5.4 %). It is a good source of protein (1.3 %). Cabbage is an excellent source of minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium and phosphorus. It contains good amount of ascorbic acid. Cabbage is used mainly as a vegetable and nice pickle (sauerkraut) is prepared from it. It is also used as salads. Cabbage is well known for its medicinal properties.

It is an important vegetable grown since long and used as fresh vegetable. It is an important legume vegetable rich in proteins. The crop is usually grown for its green pods which contains immature seed and are cooked as vegetable, alone or mixed with others. It prefers cool weather and it does not grow well during intense heat of the summer season, especially the wrinkled seeded cultivars which are tender, sweet and of much better quality than the smooth cultivars.

Foods available in nature and, in some cases, the products made from it thereof contain quite an amount of water. This water not only adds volume to the food products but also provides a sight for attack by the micro organisms. Also, removal of water becomes essential if this water interferes with the end product chracteristics. There are several processes in food industries which are designed to get rid of this excess water, such processes are called concentration processes. The processes which can remove water from food substances are,- evaporation, freeze concentration and membrane based processes. At a national level, the agricultural sector is one of the major potential users of energy in the Indian context. Further, it is often highly dependent on the supply of electricity and fuel in order to function properly. The term “agriculture” refers to all on-farm activities required for farming, raising animals, and associated activities associated with farmers, growers, and entrepreneurs. Fuels such as petroleum and electricity are primarily used for the operation of pump sets and other operations. In the future, this may result in problems with supply and price. Moreover, India has relatively small reserves of crude oil and will eventually be forced to import more crude oil to make up for the lack of reserves. In order to save energy and money on the farm, farmers must identify opportunities for energy conservation on the farm in order to maximize energy efficiency.

Food packaging has a significant contribution in preserving the quality of the food throughout the processing and storage. The package containing food should maintain the quality of the product for the longest time under particular environmental conditions. The quality of various food and beverages decline with the passage of time and food become unacceptable to consume. The time in which food deteriorates and become unacceptable is termed as shelf-life. The degradation of quality with time under storage conditions depends upon intrinsic as well as extrinsic factors. The shelf-life study of a product provides important information to manufacturer and consumer regarding the quality of the food product throughout the storage time.

Food packaging is the integral part of the food industry. Packaging may be defined as the enclosure of products, items or packages in a wrapped pouch, bag, box, cup, tray, can, tube, bottle or other container form to perform one or more of the following functions: containment, protection, preservation, communication, utility and performance. If the device or container performs one or more of these functions, it is considered a package. The major roles of the packaging of food are the containment and preservation of foods by protecting the food from physical, chemical and microbial spoilage. Besides, packaging performs some other functions like communication which means giving the information about the product, transportation of the food production and so on. Food products are classified as perishable, semi- perishable and non-perishable food based on the spoilage. Selecting appropriate packaging material and packaging technique for various food products like meat and poultry, fruits and vegetables, milk and milk products, bakery and confectionery and beverages is essential to maintain the quality of food product. Selection of the ideal packaging material for specific food requires prior knowledge about the packaging materials and its properties, type of the food products and specific spoilage mechanism of the particular food. Above all, from economical point of view, packaging material cost and capital for the establishment of the packaging technique also plays crucial role in selection of a particular packaging material or technique. 

A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a set of step-by-step instructions compiled by an organization to help workers carry out routine operations. SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output and uniformity of performance, while reducing miscommunication and failure to comply with industry regulations. The military (e.g. in the U.S. and UK) sometimes uses the term standing (rather than standard) operating procedure because a military SOP refers to a unit’s unique procedures, which are not necessarily standard to another unit. The word “standard” can imply that only one (standard) procedure is to be used across all units. The term can also be used facetiously to refer to practices that are unconstructive, yet the norm. In the Philippines, for instance, “SOP” is the term for pervasive corruption within the government and its institutions.

The theory of simple correlation (r_xy), regression coefficients (b_yx & b_xy) and their test of significance have been discucsed in chapter 13. The test of significance of observed partial correlation coefficient p₁₂₃(k+2) and multiple correlation coefficient R₁₂₃, have also been discussed in sections 13.4 and 13.5 respectively. Now in this chapter mainly the process of how to calculate spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, partial correlation and regression coefficients and multiple correlation coefficient using their fundamental definitions as well as appropriate statistical formule in terms of pairwise simple correlation coefficient r_ij (i = j = 1, 2, 3) in trivariate populations have been provided to make the students and its users to be familiar with basic and crystal clear concepts of the subject matter with the help of an empirical studies based on some original data on (X₁, X₂, X₃). Here X₁ has been considered as study variate and (X₂, X₃) as covariates.

Floriculture is the most important aspect of urban agriculture, which fulfils the need for beautification, recreation, entertainment and income earning. In broader sense, it includes growing flowering and ornamental plants in gardens, rooftops and terraces. Floriculture comprises of house plants, flowering plants, pot plants, cut flowers and decorative foliage. Mango

Mango (Mangifera indica) is one of the prominent fruit crops of India. It has delicious taste and excellent flavour. Mango fruit is utilized at all the stages of its development. Raw fruits are used for preparation of pickle, chutney and juice. The ripe fruits are consumed directly and are used for preparation of several products like squash, syrup, jam and jelly. Ripe mango contains about 0.6 per cent protein, 0.1 per cent fat, 11.8 per cent carbohydrate, 0.3 per cent minerals and 1.1 per cent fibre. 

Pineapple Ananas comosus (Linn.) Merr. (Family – Bromeliaceae) is a tropical plant with edible fruit comprising of coalesced and the most economically important plant. The pineapple is native of southern Brazil and its wild relatives present at Paraguay. It was introduced in India by the Portuguese. Before arrival of Columbus the Indians deported it to West Indies. The Spanish introduced pineapple in Philippines. It was also introduced in Hawaii during early 16^th Century. The fruit reached in England during 1660 and began to grown in greenhouses in around 1720.

The Indian gooseberry or amla (Phyllanthus emblica Linn.; Family: Euphorbiaceae) is a deciduous fruit largely cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for its fruits. Amla is native to the tropical South Eastern Asia, particularly the Central and Southern India (Mortan, 1960), where the plants are often seen to grow in the wild up to an elevation of 1800 m (Firminger, 1947). In India, amla is mostly cultivated in the semi-arid regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Aravalli ranges in Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh (Pathak, 2003). The tree attains a height of 8 to 18 m, with a crooked trunk and spreading pattern of branching. The branchlets are glabrous or finely pubescent; leaves are simple, nearly stalkless, set along the branchlets resembling pinnate type. 

India is an agrarian country where around 70% of the total population is engaged in farming activities. Agriculture and allied sectors are undoubtedly the largest livelihood provider of India, along with significant contribution towards the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Agricultural production has been raised dramatically in the recent past to feed our burgeoning population with the help of modern inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, mechanical devices for tilling, seeding and irrigating the crops. The tribal population comprising 705 tribal communities spread over various states of India contributes 8.6 % of total India’s population (Census 2011). Introduction The ever increasing demand for functional foods having numerous health benefits has been an active research ground for the food scientists around the globe. Till date, many food products have been formulated to deliver functionalities by value addition with bioactive compounds (Carvalho Barros et al., 2020). These products have been extensively studied and proved to be beneficial, especially for elder age group against various metabolic syndrome and health complications. Functional foods are edible products fortified with compounds having additional health and safety benefits such as vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds (Granato et al., 2020). One such example of a nutritionally dense food product with the potential of fortification to meet certain health benefits is fruit leather.

Introduction Cauliflower Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is a cold season vegetable cropbelongs to family cruciferous or Brassicaceae family with somatic chromosome number 2n = 18. Cauliflower is derived from the Latin word i.e., ‘caulis’ means stem and ‘floris’ means flower and wild progenitor is Brassica cretica. In India, cauliflower is grown in two different varieties: snowball type and tropical type. However, at first, other varieties of cauliflower, such as the European and Cornish types from England, were also brought to India. Later, the Cornish and European forms of cauliflower were intercrossed to develop the tropical type of cauliflower. The Indian type or tropical type of cauliflower can be grown in hot weather and high rainfall condition therefore, such type of cauliflower is mostly grown in Indian plains during the month of May to January followed by temperate type or snowball group based on the temperature based varietal classification.

Millets have immense potential of providing nutritional security worldwide and play a pivotal role in food and nutrition economy. The nutritional aspects of millets are comparatively superior from the widely consumed cereals across the globe. With the presence of various essential macro nutrients millets are also enriched with the goodness of micro nutrients as minerals, vitamins and possess various bioactive compounds that portray several health benefits. The nutritional attributes of the millets are accompanied with several antinutritional factors such as tannins, phytates, saponins, trypsin and amylase inhibitors etc. that limit the bioavailability of the essential nutrients and minerals in these wonder grains upon consumption.

1. Introduction Ayurvedic texts like Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, have described millets as the staple food useful in managing diabetes mellitus (Sachan Kumar, 2004). Based on the experience of eating these millets for time immemorial, there exists also a strong traditional knowledge about health benefits associated with them. For example, as per an adage in the state of Karnataka, India: “Those who eat rice will grow as a light weight; their body being just like that of a bird; those who eat Jowar will become as strong as a wolf but those who eat Ragi (millets) will be the strongest of them all, plus they would be free from illness (‘nirogi’ in Sanskrit)”! Certain studies from literature refer nutraceutical character of millets, especially, Kodo and Kutki, which in our opinion should help mankind in eradicating malnutrition and hunger while ensuring sustainable supply of food.

Background The Gulf of Mannar is one of the world’s richest marine biodiversity areas, as well as the first biosphere reserve in the region.
