Series of experiments are conducted at different locations, times, or combinations of locations and years to evaluate the spatial and temporal performance of treatments. Such experiments are especially important in forestry and agricultural research when conclusions are intended to apply across wider geographical or environmental conditions. This chapter explains combined analysis of a series of experiments after individual experiments have first been analysed according to their respective designs. Particular attention is given to testing the homogeneity of error variances, including Bartlett’s test. When variances are homogeneous, pooled analysis can assess treatment effects, location or year effects, and treatment-by-location or treatment-by-year interactions, thereby evaluating consistency of treatment responses.

The questions related to different series like perfect squares, perfect cubes, geometric, arithmetic, two stage types etc. are given to quantify the aptitude of the students. These series have a definite pattern and require to stressed upon the basic knowledge and aptitude of the candidates to find out the proper answer. The series may follow different pattern either additive, deductive or multiple based on earlier values given in the series. Some of the tips are given below for better understanding of the students and also these tips will help you to solve some of the ticklish questions.

This chapter deals with the principles and applications of serological tests used to detect antigens and antibodies. It distinguishes primary, secondary and tertiary binding tests and explains antibody titre, affinity, avidity, sensitivity and specificity. Important techniques include precipitation, agglutination, complement fixation, neutralization, immunofluorescence, ELISA, radioimmunoassay, Western blotting and the radioallergosorbent test. The chapter also addresses serum decomplementation and the interpretation of positive and negative reactions. These methods are central to the laboratory diagnosis, surveillance and control of infectious diseases. The objective questions enable readers to compare diagnostic techniques and select appropriate tests according to their principles, applications and analytical performance.

The application or utility of serology in solving taxonomic problems is called serotaxonomy or systematic serology. The study of antigen-antibody reactions is called serology. It had its origin towards the end of 20th century with the discovery of serological reactions and development of the discipline of immunology. The substance capable of stimulating the formation of an antibody is called antigen. A highly specific protein molecule produced by plasma cells in the immune system is called antibody. The antibodies combine chemically with specific kinds of antigens. Proteins are the useful carriers of
taxonomic information and are most widely used antigens in serotaxonomy.
Serology is Useful in The Following Ways
1. It expresses similarities and dissimilarities amongst different taxa, and these data are helpful in taxonomy. It determines the degree of similarity between species, genera, families, etc. by comparing the reactions of antigens from various plant taxa with antibodies raised against the antigen of a given taxon.
2. It helps in comparing non-morphological characteristics, the knowledge of which is useful in taxonomy.
3. Single proteins from different plant taxa are also compared by serology techniques.

Members of the genus Serpulina (Treponema) are host-associated spirochaetes found in the oral cavity, intestinal tract and genital region of animals and humans. The cells are wider, are not as tightly coiled as th e leptospires and can be stained by aniline dyes.
The species of veterinary significance are S. Hyodysenleriae (swine dysentery) and T. paraluiscunicllii (ventdisease of rabbits). S. innocens, present in the faecesof pigs and dogs, is thought to be non- athogenic,although some workers regard S. innocens as a strainof S. hyodysenteriae of lower virulence. S. hyodysenteriae and S. innocens are s imilarmorphologically, culturally as well as biochemicallyand can be grown on laboratory media. T. Paraluiscuniculi has not been cultured in vitro.
Normal Habitat
T. paraluiscliniculi produces a benign venereal disease of rabbits and is present in lesions in the genito-perineal area of rabbits. It causes latentin fection in mice, guinea- pigs and hamsters. The treponemes can be found in the lymph nodes of these animals. The reservoir of S. hyodysenteriae is the intestinal tract of pigs, wild rats and mice. Recovered, asymptomatic pigs can excrete these organisms in faeces for 3 months or more. Survival of S. hyodysenteriae in soil or voided pig faeces is short, about 24 48 hours. Infection is by the faecal-oral route.

Etiology

It is an uncommon endocrine related skin disorder. It is very rarely encountered in neutered dogs.It is always associated with cryptorchidism and sertoli cell tumor. This condition is closely accompanied with endocrine related testicular tumor followed by skin lesion and feminization.

Principle

The infectivity of a virus may be neutralized by specific antibody when they are mixed and incubated. In some cases, the addition of homologous or guinea pig complement to the mixture enhances neutralization, particularly when early antiserum is used. Serum must be inactivated by heating at 560C for 30 minutes to inactivate complement or to remove non-specific virus inhibitors. Serum-virus mixtures are inoculated into appropriate cell cultures, which are then incubated until the only virus controls develop cytopathic effects. Antibody by neutralizing the infectivity of the virus, protects the cells against virus destruction.

5.1. Emergence of Service Area Approach

Food grains production increased from 133.30 million tons to 150.50 million tons by 18%

In contrast, there was 41% increase in outstanding level of credit for agriculture from rural lending agencies viz., Co-operatives, RRBs and CBs between June 1981 and June 1986.

Share of Haryana, Punjab and U.P. in total food grains production was around 38% accounted for 75% increase in food grains output.

However, their share in the total institutional credit was 22% only.

Introduction

Cultivated sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), has originated in India (Bedigian,1984; Bedigian et al., 1985; Bedigian and Harlan,1986) and is considered to be the oldest oilseed crop known to man (Ram et al 1990). Archaeological records indicate that it was known and used in India for more than 5,000 years and is recorded as a crop in Babylon and Assyria some 4,000 years ago (Borchani et al., 2010). Sesame crop is being grown in many parts of the world. Sesame seed is an important source of edible oil and is also widely used as a spice and condiment. The seed contains 50-60% oil which has excellent stability due to the presence of natural antioxidants such as sesamolin, sesamin and sesamol (Brar and Ahuja 1979).

Sesamum indicum L., belongs to the family Pedaliaceae, which contains sixteen genera and sixty species under the generic name Sesamum. The other species related to sesame viz., Sesamum angustifolium, Sesamum radiatum and Certotheca sesamoides (false sesame) are cultivated in Africa. The fact that the crop is cultivated in India from times immemorial is testified by the excavations of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro of undivided India (Watt,1966). The crop was introduced into Brazil by the Portuguese (Weiss, 2000).

World production of sesame seed didn’t show any marked increase for the past three decades, although sesame oil is used largely in Asia and Africa. The current world production of sesame stands at 6.1 million tons as in the year 2016. The sesame production declined world over since the crop had to face a tough competition against other oilseed crops (Weiss, 2000). Most of the world trade on sesame revolves around the seed. The shipments of seed cake and oil are negligible.

The earlier view was that the cultivated sesame originated from Ethiopia. But Bedigian and Harlen (1984) established evidence to indicate that sesame is native of India. In vedic period, liberal mention about Til (Gingelly seed) and Taila (Gingelly oil) are mentioned. The Charred seeds of Gingelly were extracted from Harappa (2500-1500 B.C).

The current study focused to investigate the significance of AgNOR count in diagnosis of canine mammary tumour and its correlation with histopathological evaluation. A total of 53 cases suspected for canine mammary tumour were presented to Veterinary Clinical Complex, DUVASU Mathura from January 2021 to April 2022, out of these 42 cases were screened as neoplastic while 11 were non- neoplastic based on cytological examination. 24 tissue samples were collected out of 42 neoplastic cases during surgical procedure under general anaesthesia for further detailed examination by the approval of Institutional Animal Ethics Committee vide application number IAEC/22/22. AgNOR staining revealed that carcinoma solid had highest number of AgNOR followed by malignant myoepithelioma and fibrosarcoma. AgNOR count gives an assessment of cell kinetics and is directly related to proliferative activity of cells.

To set up of an X–ray (radiology) section following points should be considered while planning:
 
    1.    Anticipated present work load (number of cases and species of animals to be X-rayed) and future requirement in the next 10-15 years.
    2.    Financial resources available.
    3.    Type of equipment to be installed for radiographic work.
    4.    Requirement of radiation safety enforcing agencies e.g. of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

Research setting is basically a functional social ecology along with research objectives and condition wherein all possible socio-economic and communication processes are generated, and again gets regenerated. The researcher seeks to throw a spotlight on the implications and behavioral patterns of people who reside in the subject region and who are usual of the greater community. In this chapter, an in-depth review of the socio-demographic background of the local population in a rural setting has been provided.

4.1. Area of the study

The present research study was taken up in two states, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

The research locale is a crucial aspect of any research study because it can have a significant impact on the data collected, the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the research. The selection of the research locale should be based on the research questions, objectives, and methodology of the study. The research setting is essential because it provides a contextual framework that helps to inform the researcher’s interpretation of the data. 3.1 Introduction

In developing and in semi-developed countries, rural-urban migration is driven by the uneven distribution of employment, income-opportunities etc. (Skeldon, 1990). Rapid population growth, especially in rural areas, provides an important demographic backdrop to these rural-urban population shifts. Given the growing and well-known difficulties that are faced by the overall Indian population in f inding productive employment, it is important to study the characteristics of labors that migrate from rural-urban areas. Under this backdrop, attempts have been made in this study to examine the nature, pattern and determinants of rural urban migration and the spread of urban informal sector and the likely impact of rural-urban migration on agricultural productivity and efficiency.

2.1 Setting Business Goals and Objectives

Most of ultrasound machines are designed for imaging with a particular resolution linear and convex transducers. These machines can be used for general purpose for abdominal, obstetrics, gynecological, small parts, urology and cardiac applications. Most of the machines have standard measurement software viz. distance, area, volume, circumference, and obstetrical gestational age measurement for BPD, HC, AC, FL, GS, CRL, AD and FW.

Assessment of probes: One should examine the probe whether it is linear array or curved (convex) array. The probe should also be checked for its frequency. These days multi-frequency probes are supplied with the ultrasound-machine. These multiple frequencies could be 2.0 to 5.0 MHz with centrally fixed frequency of 3.5 MHz. The frequencies could be 4.0 to 7.0 (5.0 MHz setting), 5.0 to 9.0 MHz (7.5 MHz setting). The area and depth covered by various frequencies should be known.

Before setting the ultrasound machine, one should make sure of all the auxiliary devices for the machines. These are Thermal video printer, Ultrasound gel, Biopsy needle, image saving devices (USB device or internal saving mechanism), wire, Uninterrupted Power Supply etc.

Identifying and knowing the main system: One should note down the name and model of ultrasound machine as these are quoted in all the documents published with the ultrascan images generated on that particular machine. It is written on one side of front panel. On the front panel, there are various knobs for proper setting. One should locate the auxiliary power switch of the machine to begin with. Generally, there is power indicator on the machine that shows light on when power button is pushed to on position. The auxiliary power switch may also have indications of its ON and OFF positions, may be marked with 0 and 1 or other symbols. As shown in the figure below, there are various operating buttons on the operating panel. These might vary from Machine to Machine.

Selection of site for a poultry farm: The following points should be considered while selecting site or location for a poultry farm.

The farm should be located at an elevated area with proper facilities for drainage.

To protect the farm against strong wind, tall trees may be planted surrounding the farm complex.

The farm should be located not too far from city to bring in and take out materials.

The commercial farm should be located near to marketing centres.

The breeder farm should be located in an isolated area away from commercial farm to ensure biosecurity.

The farm should have an easy access to connecting roads.

The site should have provision of electricity.

The desirable soil type for a poultry farm is loamy or sandy loam.

There should be provision of abundant potable water at the site. The water should be tested for various impurities like total solids, microbiological contamination, high percentage of salts of Na, K and Chlorine, nitrite, nitrate etc. Total bacterial count and Coliform count should be 0/ml.

Sex determination is one of the first aspects of nematode biology to be systematically characterized with genetic analysis and the depth of this analysis has made it a major topic in developmental biology. It is both fair and interesting to ask how general the Caenorhabditis elegans model is likely to be, both for other nematodes as well as for animals in general. As nematodes employ many different reproductive strategies, often related to parasitic life histories, one might expect similarly variable sex determination mechanisms. However, comparative studies of sex determination based on the C? elgans model have revealed both rapidly evolving and surprisingly well conserved features (Haag, 2005). This mixture of old and new (or slow and fast), along with its obvious relevance to evolution, ecology, and applied fields like agricultural and medical parasitology, has made the evolution of nematode sex determination an increasingly active research area.

Sex Chromosomes

Sex can be considered at chromosomal, gonadal, phenotypic, and gender identity levels.

Human females are homogametic (XX) and males are heterogametic (XY).

The Y chromosome contains few identified genes, while the larger X chromosome contains several thousand genes. Pseudoautosomal regions at both tips of the Y chromosome contain genes that have counterparts on the X chromosome.

The male determining gene, SRY, has been found on the Y chromosome.

Sex hormone plays a vital role in the occurrence of canine mammary cancer. It is well established that canine mammary cancer is sex-hormone dependent. The risk of developing canine mammary tumour is 0.05% if the dog is spayed before its first estrous and the risk of developing a mammary cancer is increased as the number of estrous cycle increases. Mammary cancer is often hormone responsive, since growth or regression of tumours can be modulated by suitable hormonal manipulations. Estrogen and Progesterone appear to be major hormones in regulation of mammary tumour development. It is also reported that about 40-50% malignant mammary tumour in the dog have either or both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Benign tumours in dogs have also female sex hormone receptors and they can be stimulated by hormonal cycling. Mammary carcinoma can be induced in male and female rodents by administration of estrogen. Transsexual males given high doses of estrogen to induce mammary development have developed mammary cancer. So measurement of different sex hormones or sex steroids is an essential step during any study related to development and efficacy of treatment of canine mammary cancer.

Some traits are carried on the sex chromosomes, X and Y. Most traits carried are present on only the X-chromosome. The Y-chromosome is smaller, and so, very few genes are located on this chromosome. Sex traits can be categorized into three types of inheritance:
Sex limited,
Sex-linked, and
Sex-influenced.
Sex-limited traits are traits that are visible only within one sex. For instance, barred colouring in chickens normally is visible only in the roosters. Sex-linked traits would be considered traits like sickle cell anemia and colour blindness. They are said to be linked because more males (XY) develop these traits than females (XX). This is because the females have a second X gene to counteract the recessive trait. Thus, the trait is more likely to be visible in the male.
Sex Influenced Inheritance
The condition in which the same gene acts as dominant in one sex and recessive in other sex is called as sex influenced dominance. That is, the sex influences the gene either to be dominant or recessive. The sex influenced genes are present in autosomes. This differential behaviour of the gene is due to female and male sex hormones. For example, in human being baldness is due to sex influenced gene. This trait is dominant in men and recessive in women. A man is bald in homozygous recessive as well on heterozygous condition for baldness. Whereas women exhibit baldness only in homozygous recessive condition for baldness and heterozygous condition for baldness in female sex produce normal phenotype. HN, HN -Normal female and normal male

Sexual behavior

The pattern of courtship, display, motor activities and postures are directed to bring the male and female gametes together to ensure fertilization and pregnancy. The components of copulatory patterns are sexual arousal, courtship (sexual display), erection, penile protrusion, mounting, intromission, ejaculation, dismounting and refractoriness. The duration of courtship and copulation varies with the species both events are shorter in cattle and sheep than in swine and horses. The males sniff and lick the genitalia of female are more common and an important way of chemical communication through olfaction. Except in swine, the males smell the female’s urine and then raise head, with lips curled, in the ritualized “Flehmen’s reaction”. In sheep, goat and cattle, tactile stimulation of the female is made by nuzzling and licking the perineal region, whereas with the horse, the stallion often bites the female’s neck and in swine, the boar noses her flanks.

• Sexual activity or mating behaviour is innate character of the males. Unlike the female animal, male animal has a nature of sexual receptivity permanently. • Male gonadal steroid androgen controls sexual behaviour. At regular interval of 2-4 hrs, there is secretion of testosterone which converts into estradiol due to aromatization. Due to this very frequent rise in estradiol level, male shows sexual behaviour permanently. In female animals, a rise in estradiol occurs only during estrous. • When in a group of animals, any female can be mated with any male, it is called promiscuous sexual behaviour. Sexual behaviour in some animals is according to their social structure and territorial/home range i.e. male and female share some of their home range for the purpose of mating e.g. Roe deer, Muntjak antelope etc. In some animals, both males and females share whole of their territory for the mating purpose called a harem e.g. wild rabbit. Some animals come into a temporary territory meant only for mating in breeding season e.g. seal.

The embryogenesis or embryonic development of a sexually reproducing multicellular animal is prefaced by the gametogenesis as ovum and sperms.

In some animals both kinds of gametes are produced by a single individual which is called monoecious or hermaphrodite.

But in majority of animals both kinds of gametes are produced by different individuals to an animal species are called dioecious.

The kind of sex cells as spermatozoa and ova; and those organs which are immediately concerned with their production i.e. male gonads called as testes and female gonads as ovaries form the primary sexual characters of each sex.

Besides these primary sexual characters the male and female sexes differ from each other in many somatic characters, which are called secondary sexual characters.

Such a phenomenon of morphological differentiation or specialization in secondary sexual characters between male and female individuals of a species is called sexual dimorphism. Sexes are generally separate in fishes and only a few species are hermaphrodite.

30.1 Introduction

Sexual dimorphism is a condition in which sexes of the same species exhibit morphological differences that are not directly related to reproduction. It is a common and noticeable feature of the animal world. It is extremely important in biodiversity assessments, as well as in biometry, breeding biology, induced breeding, breeding, pheromone biology and other related fields.

MALE STERLITY, or failure to fertilize female egg cells, may be due to several causes. In some cases the trouble is due to an emotional factor, such as a mental block. It may be caused by an absence or atrophy of the testes, or perhaps by some obstruction in the male genital organs. Infections involving the 'genital organs may result in the production of unhealthy or even dead sperm cells. In such cases special tests may locate the seat of the trouble, which may be treated surgically.

FEMALE STERLITY, or failure to have children may arise from several different causes. Sometimes the trouble is due to the husband.

The ovum remains viable and capable of being fertilized after it is expelled from the ovary probably no longer than 24 hours. Therefore, sperm must be available soon after ovulation if fertilization is to take place. On the other hand, a few sperm can remain fertile in the female reproductive tract for up to 72 hours, although most of them for not more than 24 hours. Therefore fertilization to take place, intercourse usually must occur sometime between 1 to 2 days before ovulation and up to 1 day after ovulation

4.1 INTRODUCTION

The method of propagation in plants may be sexual or asexual. In sexual method of propagation, specialized reproductive cells called gametes are formed by the process of gametogenesis. Fusion of the male and female gametes leads to the development of an embryo and eventually the seed.

4.2 GAMETOGENESIS

The production of male and female gametes is known as gametogenesis. It occurs within microspores and megaspores. It involves only mitosis. It is of two types: (1) microgametogenesis and (2) megagametogenesis.

Sexual propagation through seeds is a fundamental method for producing horticultural crops, rootstocks, and planting material. This chapter explains seed structure, quality, viability, dormancy, germination, and factors affecting successful seedling establishment. Different types of seed dormancy and methods for overcoming dormancy are discussed, including scarification, stratification, chemical treatments, temperature management, and appropriate moisture conditions. Seed testing and quality considerations are important for obtaining uniform and healthy plants. The chapter also emphasizes the influence of temperature, oxygen, water, light, and substrate conditions on germination. Understanding seed biology enables students and growers to produce vigorous seedlings and establish reliable nursery and crop-production systems.

Description and Distribution
Shallot belongs to the onion and garlic family and is similar in properties to those of garlic. It is a native of Palestine and is cultivated in the USA, some European countries and in Indian gardens for its bulbs and green leaves. Clusters of greenish-white or red cloves occur at the base of its hollow cylindrical leaves. A variety of Shallot, smaller and with larger number of cloves, is exported to Sri Lanka and Malaysia from Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, India.
Economic Importance
Shallot is gradually gaining importance, as is seen from the export of the same from India during 1994-95. There is much scope for its export development provided its cultivation is stepped up gradually. The encouraging export performance during 1994-95 can be seen from the following table (Table 19).

Morphological characteristics

It is an annual/perennial herb with prostrate spreading branches in all directions. The root system is deep. Leaflets are 2.5-5 cm long, elliptical, oblong and rounded at base. Leaves are densely clothed with white appressed and long spreading hairs. In nature, seedlings appear after 2-3 showers during July-August. Generally, the seedlings are abundant under the canopy of trees or shrubs. The young seedling grows straight and produces lateral branches during first week of August. The lateral branches spread in all directions. The flowering starts during first week of August. Fruit formation takes place in the last week of August, while flowering still continues. The dispersal of the seeds takes place from September to December. Plant dries during November-December.

Floral characteristics

Flowers are blue in colour and axillary in position. They are either solitary or in pairs on the long stalk. Styles are two and each is bifid. Fruit is globose with four-valved capsule containing dark brown to black smooth seeds. The flower colour varies from dark purple to whitish-purple.

Distribution

Plant is commonly found growing in open and grassy places, almost throughout India, ascending upto 1500 meter in the Himalayas. It is cultivated also in the sub-tropical parts of India, ascending upto 1800 meter elevation.

Introduction

The shaper machine is a reciprocating type of machine (that is, the machine that converts the rotatory motion into the linear motion) in which the tool reciprocates with the forward and backward stroke removing the metal form of metal chips and turning the Metal workpiece into the desired shape.

Of about 1300 species of orchids reported from India, the Northeast has the highest concentration with about 700 species. The species richness is highest in Arunachal Pradesh where over 5000 flowering plants occur and the lowest in Tripura with 1600 species. Bamboo is the lifeline of the Northeast and 63 out of 136 species found in India occur in this region. Sadly, however, 25 species of bamboo fall under the rare and endangered category. The region is also home to the eri and muga silkworms. The yak and the mithun are unique animals which are threatened by the spread of non-edible invasive species like Lantana, Eupatorium and Mekenia. The cultural diversity of this region is well known, with 225 tribes out of 450 in the country living here.

There are many migratory, semi-migratory and sedentary shepherd communities in India with sheep rearing along with goats as the main livelihood)Besides scores of land less wages-earning families keep small numbers of goats for crucial supplementary income. Sheep and goat farming, due to its quicker and better returns on investment provides an additional source of income to farmers who normally depend on crops for their livelihood) Thus these animals fit in ideally in a mixed farming system. In India, goats and sheep are mostly maintained under extensive system which includes migratory, transhumance, free range, grazing community pastures, stubbles of cropped lands supplemented with crop residues and tree-lopping. Although a number of management systems are in practices varying from region to region these may be conveniently divided in to extensive, Semiintensive and Intensive systems.

This chapter introduces the relationship between sheep breed, production system and the type and quality of wool produced. It classifies sheep into fine-wool, longwool, medium or crossbred, carpet-wool and hair breeds. Particular attention is given to Merino and Indian breeds such as Chokla, Magra, Marwari, Nali, Deccani, Gaddi, Rampur Bushair and Bhakarwal. The chapter also examines extensive, pastoral, mixed and intensive production systems and their influence on wool characteristics and economic value.

According to the karyotyping the domestic sheep (Ovis aries) has 54 chromosomes. The following is a brief summary of their chromosome composition:

Autosomes: There are one pair of sex chromosomes, 52 autosomes and three pairs of these autosomes are submetacentric (having a centromere slightly off centre), while the rest are acrocentric (with the centromere near one end).

Sex Chromosomes: The X chromosome is acrocentric and the Y chromosome varies from submetacentric to metacentric.

The major produce from Sheep production are milk, meat, skin, fibre and manure. However, most of the small-scale producers in developing countries raise sheep for meat or sale.

A lot of infrastructure in the form of sheep breeding or production facilities such as sheep breeding research stations with adequate number of animals have been established and research technologies generated. The research technologies generated have however not been fully adopted by State Animal Husbandry Departments in the field except in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Parts of Rajasthan because of artificial insemination under field conditions due to migratory and semi-migratory practices in sheep husbandry, illiteracy among sheep farmers, their prejudices and convictions and difficulties in the preservation and storage of ram semen and main power requirement.

There is need to study the factors associated with adoption and rejection of sheep rearing as a subsidiary occupation and to know the attitude and knowledge of rural people. So that measures could be suggested to bring greater adoption of sheep rearing. The present study was undertaken to reveal the knowledge and attitude of adopters and non-adopters towards sheep rearing with the identification of factors helping and hindering the adoption of sheep rearing enterprise.

This chapter deals with the review of problems, objectives, hypothesis, research methodology and summary of major findings and conclusions based upon them. In addition, recommendations have also been made to accelerate adoption of sheep rearing programme in the five villages of Block Rajouri, District Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir.

The present study was conducted to measure the knowledge and attitude of rural people towards sheep rearing and to find out the factors responsible for adoption and rejection of sheep rearing. Suitable measures are therefore suggested to bring greater adoption of sheep rearing in the hills of Jammu & Kashmir.

Abstract

Sheep milk is one of the superior quality of dairy foods and it is also considered as nutritional powerhouse. The beneficial role of sheep milk results from its fatty acid, immunoglobulin and non-immune protein contents. Apart from different dairy products and functional foods; this milk is used in anti-ageing and cosmetic soap preparations. In India Sheep make a valuable contribution to the livelihood of the economically weaker sections of the society. In our country the major portion of sheep milk is consumed as fluid milk and in certain areas converted into ghee and dahi.

Synonyms : Variola ovine, ovine pox

Sheep pox causes a severe and highly contagious disease in sheep which is listed in group A disease of the OIE. It is defined as a malignant pox of sheep characterized by fever and generalized development of pock lesions. Lesions first appear as vesicles which later turn into pustules on the exposed parts of the body. There is high mortality rate in lambs.

Distribution :  The disease is in existence since very long in Asia and Europe. It is prevalent in many areas of middle East countries, Africa, Asia and  Mediterranean countries. There are lot of disease outbreaks in India around the year. European Union with the exception of occasional sporadic outbreak in eastern areas of Greece, U.S.A. and Australia are free from the disease.

Origin and Domestication of Sheep

The domesticated sheep belongs to phylum-Chordata, class-Mammalia, order- Artiodactyla, family - Bovidae, sub-family - Caprinae, genus - Ovis and species- aries. They are hollow horned, cloven-hoofed ruminants of relatively smaller size. Sheep plays an important role in Indian agrarian economy as it is having multi facet utilities like meat, wool, skin, manure and to some extent milk and transport also. Marginal and sub-marginal lands of arid and semi-arid tropics are well adapted by sheep. Among the different wild species, Asiatic (Ovis orientalis) species of mouflon is considered to be the ancestor of present day sheep. Sheep were domesticated by man at around 9000 BC. The reference of role of sheep in the economy of mankind is found in the history of civilization of Mesopotamia, Mohen-jo-Daro and Harappa in Northern India.

14.2 Stretch Forming Operation
A sheet metal is simultaneously stretched and curved over a die during the stretch forming process to create big shaped parts. Stretch forming is done using a stretch press, where jaws are gripped firmly to fix a sheet metal along its edges. To stretch the sheet, the grasping jaws are individually coupled to a carriage that is drawn by a hydraulic or pneumatic force. A stretch form block, also known as a form die, is the tooling utilized in this procedure. It is a solid contoured piece that the sheet metal will be pressed against. The most common type of stretch press is vertically orientated with the form die situated on a press table , which will be elevated by a hydraulic ram into the sheet. Tensile stresses build and the sheet plastically deforms into a new shape when the form die is pressed into the firmly gripped sheet. The sheet is pulled horizontally around the form die by the gripping jaws of a horizontal stretch press, which mounts the form die sideways on a stationary press table

Any metal that is shaped into thin, malleable sheets is called sheet metal. The sheets come in a variety of predetermined thicknesses, known as gauges, and are made of materials ranging from titanium to brass. Although sheets can vary in thickness from fractions of a millimeter to several inches, most are typically less than ¼ inch thick. In sheet metal forming, different techniques are used to exert force on a sheet of metal to plastically change it into the required shape and changing its geometry instead of removing any material. Because sheet metal can be bent or stretched into a wide range of intricate shapes, it can be used to create sophisticated structures that are both very strong and use little material. The most economical forming method available today for producing large quantities of parts is sheet metal forming. On the other end of the spectrum, it can be manually operated in metal workshops for small series items or fully automated in factories. It is a flexible, reliable, and superior process that produces precise metal parts with little material waste. Sheet metal forming components are everywhere in our daily lives, from metal cans to protective housing for hardware. Sheet metal process is an extensive cold working procedure that involves shearing, punching/cutting, folding, riveting, splicing, and moulding such as vehicle bodies using metal sheets that are typically less than 6mm in thickness.
13.2 Sheet Metal Characteristics
The characteristics of the sheet metal are as listed below.
i. Because of its ductility, sheet metal may be shaped into a wide variety of shapes without shattering or cracking.
ii. Because it allows the material to be bent, stretched, and stamped throughout the production process, its malleability is essential for manufacturing.
iii. Another crucial element is the thickness of the sheet metal, which can vary from incredibly thin to several centimeters. Typically, a gauge number is used to indicate the thickness of a sheet metal. A lower gauge number denotes a thicker material and a higher gauge number denotes a thinner material. Sheet metal can be used for a wide range of purposes, from heavyduty machinery parts to lightweight electronic enclosures.
