The productivity of potato depends mainly on the quality and quantity of planting materials and the agronomic management practices adopted. Most of developing countries including India experience release of high yielding varieties, development of adequate agronomic and pest control measures but the gap between supply and demand of good quality adequate quantity seed has to be the major constraint in increasing its productivity. The seed production in India is mainly confined to the North-Western part both in the hills and the plains, because of favourable weather and low incidence of aphids (vectors responsible for viral diseases) in this regions.

Vegetable crops: A seed is borne on fruit and fruit is a mature ovary and ovary is a typical part of flower. Flower in angiosperm, consists of four parts these are calyx/sepal, corolla/petals, androecium/stamens and gynocium/pistil, outer whorl of flower is collectively referred to as calyx. A seed scientist may be concerned with each quality characteristic of an individual seed while the seed trader normally considers the quality components of a seed lot. Since seed deterioration is irreversible process and the rate of deterioration might be arrested using proper packaging material, moisture proof packaging material are very effective for preserving seed viability, germination ability, vigour and other quality traits of orthodox seed. For the locations, with inadequate storage facilities and high humidity, moisture proof material is favoured. The use of high cost material is justified considering the advantage under such conditions in terms of maintaining the quality of the seeds.

In hills, farmers usually store their own seed for sowing in the next season. The uncertainty about the availability of good quality seed at proper time in the remote hilly areas develops a habit in the farmers for storing their own seed. Seed quality comprises the sum of all properties or characteristics, which determine the potential level of the seed or seed lot performance and crop establishment. Once the seed is sown many factors (biotic, abiotic etc.,) influence its survival and potential. Seed priming is one of the short–term and most programmatic approaches followed to improve the quality of seed so as to exhibit maximum possible potential even under adverse conditions. Seed priming is a method that well fit in to the one or more principles of sustainability, as it is practiced as a low-cost, low-risk interventions that increase and stabilize yields to have a large and direct impact on the livelihoods of farmers. Various priming methods viz., hydro priming, halo priming, matrix priming, bio priming are in practice for advancement in seed germination, better crop growth and yield. The adoption of seed priming as a successful technology is widely practiced across the Globe for various benefits at farm level. On-farm seed programme is one such   successful programmes adopted under UK aid across 11 countries towards sustainable agriculture campaign.

Seed processing is specialized activity and also a tool to improve seed quality further to an acceptable standard. Seed quality parameters like germination, vigour or genetic purity can be improved using processing. Say a seed lot having a minimum standard of 90% germination, but the competition in the market offering seed quality 92 or 95 % then to meet the market demand we can process the seed lots using re-milling or re-conditioning techniques. Also sometimes simple techniques like liquid density separation which uses specific density of the seed to separate good seed from inferior quality can be considered.

The degree of excellence in regard to the physical and genetical characterstics of seeds is called as Seed quality. Seed lots having high genetic purity and high germination percentage and minimum inert, weed and other crop seed and are free from diseases and pest attack, it is said to be a high quality seeds. If it is lacking in any of these qualities, it is said to be low quality seed lots. Only good quality seeds expected to respond well for fertilizers and other inputs used.

Key factors in this process include maintaining optimal water quality, temperature, and the provision of appropriate food sources—either natural or supplemented. Proper stocking densities and regular monitoring play a vital role in ensuring success. The seed rearing of exotic carps such as Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), and Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), along with catfish like Magur (Clarias batrachus) and Pangasius (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), is significant in enhancing aquaculture productivity in India. These species are favored due to their fast growth, adaptability to diverse environments, and strong commercial demand. Good seed rearing practices ensure a steady supply of healthy and vigorous fry and fingerlings for stocking in grow-out systems. These species are generally bred in hatcheries using induced breeding techniques. Once the hatchlings emerge, they progress through several developmental stages—from spawn to fry to fingerlings. This seed rearing period typically lasts 20 to 40 days, depending on the species and environmental conditions. Nursery systems such as earthen ponds, hapa enclosures, tanks, and cages are commonly used. Each system is managed carefully to ensure optimal conditions regarding temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, pH, and feeding.

Freshwater prawns, particularly Macrobrachium rosenbergii (giant river prawn), are among the most valuable aquaculture species in tropical and subtropical regions, including India. The seed rearing phase—spanning the period between larval rearing in hatcheries and grow-out farming—is critical to the success of prawn cultivation. After metamorphosis from larva to post-larva (PL1 to PL20), juveniles are transferred to nursery systems for 20–30 days. This phase enhances survival rates, promotes uniform growth, and boosts immunity. Seed rearing is carried out in concrete tanks, earthen ponds, FRP tanks, or indoor net enclosures (hapas). Maintaining optimal water quality is essential, with ideal conditions being:
• Temperature: 28–31°C
• pH: 7.0–8.5
• Dissolved oxygen: >4 mg/L
Given their benthic and territorial nature, prawns require adequate space and shelters (bamboo sticks, mesh, plastic pipes) to minimize cannibalism and stress. Feeding starts with live feeds like Artemia and zooplankton, followed by a gradual shift to formulated starter feed containing 35–40% protein. Feed is distributed 3–4 times daily based on biomass and consumption. Regular removal of uneaten feed and waste is vital to maintain water quality. Health management includes periodic sampling, growth monitoring, and the use of probiotics or immunostimulants to enhance gut health and disease resistance.

Seed sampling

Seed sampling is to draw a portion of seed from seed lot that represents the entire seed lot. Seed lot is a uniformly blended quantity of seed either in bag or in bulk.

To assess the quality of the seed is necessary before it is shipped for packaging and made available to the farming community. To assess certain routine seed quality parameters which are statutory for labelling seed sampling and testing are very critical. Seed testing is not only a mandatory trade requirement but also decides the market potential of a particular product in the market and safeguard the brand image of the company. Seed sampling for labelling and other trade requirements is done at processing plant. The reliability of seed testing is depends on the accuracy with which the sample represents the lot and precision of the laboratory test. In many cases variations in the test results are due to variation in the sampling. Hence, seed sampling is one of the important activities of the shop floor or processing unit.

The size and quantity of seed sample required for seed quality testing remains small as compared to the seed lot hence, representative samples are randomly drawn for this purpose. The process of obtaining a uniform and representative sample from a seed lot for seed quality testing is called seed sampling. Ultimately, they ensure a better quality of life.

The scope of the nutraceutical field is plenty both in terms of type and the varieties. The nutraceuticals industry in India is one of the rapidly growing markets. Higher- and upper-middle-class consumers are perceiving nutra ceuticals as alternatives to prescribed drugs and exclusively for their beneficial properties without any side effects. Consumers are showing sharp interest in nutraceuticals for boosting energy and improving their physical endurance and mental alertness. Nutraceutical industries are focusing on developing new products with innovative formulations and using proper advertisements to choose the right products. Nutraceuticals have significant promise in the promotion of human health and the prevention of disease. They are widely accepted by all age groups due to their safety, higher quality, purity, efficacy, health-promoting, and disease-curing activities. The newest trend is moving toward nutraceuticals, leading to a new era of medicine and health. It is still in its infancy in India. But in this hype era, we must say, “let food be your medicine” and “proper nutraceuticals daily can keep the medicine away.”

Coriander is used by man since long as coriander seeds were found in Egyptian tombs of 960 BC. Further, Persia grew coriander 3,000 years ago and it added fragrance to Hanging Gardens of Babylon. In 3^rd century BC, Romans also found coriander seed as an excellent seasoning for popular foods.

Besides seeds, fresh leaves are being used for garnishing of food in many Latin American, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Indian dishes since long. Fresh coriander leaves are also known as Chinese Parsely. In India, coriander seed is used almost daily in scores of curries for flavouring and leaves for garnishing. Coriander is a native of Mediterranean region.

Certified seed must meet certain seed standards in order to ensure an adequate level of seed purity along with the reasonable level of seed germination so that the farmer gets a good stand of the crop conforming to the varietal description. The components of the seed standard are as follows :

Introduction

The applied aspect of tree improvement consists of the development of improved trees followed by the mass production of the improved stock. No programme will be successful until both have been achieved. Too often, the improvement of forest trees is obtained without sufficient concern about how the improved material is to be reproduced and used on an operational scale. The better trees can be regenerated through seed or by vegetative propagation. All tree improvement programmes must have seed production at some stage of their development if continued gains are to be achieved. This is even true for the programmes using vegetative propagules for large-scale operations of planting; seed is needed for the development of outstanding trees, from which, vegetative propagation can be achieved.

According to Harrington’s rule (1960) of thumb, for storage, every one percent increase in moisture content, the seed life is halved far seeds of moisture content of 5-14%. For temperature, every 5^ºC rise in temperature, between 0-50 ^ºC, the seed life is halved.

Abstract

The drive of planting trees is increasing because the values of trees and forest are being appreciated in all over the world. In most of the countries good quality tree seed is not readily available for a number of reasons especially in forestry sector. Though providing the best conditions for crop growth and health is the foundation of seed quality, the factors that can have the most important effect on seed viability and vigor are harvesting, extraction, cleaning, transportation, and storage because it is easy for seed to become damaged at any of these stages. Ex situ conservation through long-term storage of seed is possible for a significant proportion of higher plants. Long-term seed storage serves as a safe and relatively inexpensive method of plant genetic resources conservation.

Sanitation

Sanitation and maintaining good hygiene conditions are the important aspect of seed storage in storage godowns. Maintenance of good hygiene conditions will maintain the quality of produce in the long run (Mahapatra et al., 2014) and these practices should not be overlooked. The threshing floors should be cleaned properly before the operation so that there is no mixing of seeds or any insect-pests or pathogens. Harvesting and threshing should be followed by cleanliness of godowns to protect the seeds from the harmful pest and pathogens (Upadhyay and Ahmad, 2011). The storage godowns should be well lighted and the area should be preferably sunny, free from weeds and mostly situated at elevated areas. Damp areas should not be selected for building storage godowns as it will affect the moisture per cent of seeds thereby enabling easy growth of insect-pests and diseases (Parimala et al., 2013). Before bringing the new produce to the storage godowns, they should be cleaned properly. The cracks and crevices of storage godowns if any should be sealed ahead and the walls of the godowns should be whitewashed (Hazam and Kumar, 2022). The new seed lots should not be mixed with the older lots. The floors should be disinfected, and it should be cleaned regularly.

Weight loss: For grains or grain legumes in the tropics, a weight loss in the range of 10-30 per cent might be expected over a full storage season.

Reduced germination in seed material: Damage to the embryo of the seed will usually prevent germination. Some storage pests prefer to attack the embryo.

Concept: The preservation of viable seeds from the moment of collecting until they are needed for sowing is known as storage. Every year, a significant quantity of seeds loses their usefulness due to incorrect storage. Seeds need to be preserved and stored dry. As was previously mentioned, seed moisture content and storage temperature have the biggest effects on how long seeds last. The three main environmental elements that impact seed deterioration and loss of viability are moisture, temperature, and oxygen percentage. For over 90% of species, reducing seed moisture content (MC) to certain thresholds consistently lengthens the seed’s lifespan (Roberts 1973). These species are categorized as “orthodox” in terms of the conditions in which they should store seeds; under suitable dry, cool conditions, they typically maintain viability and germinability even after extended periods of storage. Ellis and Roberts’ improved viability equations have addressed the quantitative impacts of both drying and cooling for orthodox seeds. The life of the seed is often doubled for every 1% drop in seed moisture (when seed MC fluctuates between 5 and 14%) and every 5 oC drop in storage temperature (between 0 oC and 50 oC) (Harrington 1972). Low seed MC and low temperature are hence fundamentals of traditional seed storage. Careful regulation of these two factors is necessary to achieve optimal storage life. But most seed produced annually just has to be kept from harvest until the following planting season. Depending on the type of seed, it may or may not need to be stored at temperatures and relative humidity above room temperature. Regardless of any modifications made for unique uses, the local climate storage facility needs to have a few essential components (Barre, 1954; Wheeler and Hill, 1957).

The purpose of seed storage is to preserve planting seed from one season  to the next. Further, the objective of seed storage is to maintain seed quality for the longest duration possible. 

Relative Humidity and Temperature Influence Seed Storability

The two most important factors that influence the storability of seed are relative humidity and temperature. The effects of relative humidity and its subsequent effect on seed moisture and the temperature of the storage environment are highly inter- dependent. Harrington (1963) gave two useful thumb rules for relative humidity and temperature in reference to storage life of the seed. These rules are as follows :

PRINCIPLES OF STORAGE

Primary aim of storage is simply to prevent deterioration of quality seed. The management objective during the storage period is to reduce metabolic activity to such a low level that the seed is sufficiently stable with minimal deterioration. The two alternative methods are

1.    Reduction of moisture content to a safe level and cooling of the seed.
2.    Modification of atmospheric condition of the storage system.

1.    Storage of commercial,  truthfully labelled and certified seed.

2.    Storage of carry-over seeds.

3.    Storage of foundation seed stocks and enforcement seed samples.

4.    Storage for germplasm seeds.

Seeds are having a ability to survive and start a new generation when favourable conditions exists. However like other form of life, they cannot retain their viability indefinitely and eventually deteriorate and die. To retain viability and germination it is important to store in proper storage. Seeds harvested may not be useful for packaging thus making it to store for a period till the need for packaging arises. Seed storage is very critical task of seed processing. The success of seed processing is determined by safe storage. Since the vegetable seeds are expensive need modern techniques of storage. Based on the seed shelf life or longevity vegetable seeds can be divided into two types:

Orthodox Seeds : Orthodox seeds are long-lived seeds. They can be successfully dried to moisture contents as low as 5% without injury and are able to tolerate freezing temperatures. Most orthodox seeds come from annual temperate species adapted to open fields. At physiological maturity they contain moisture content of 30 – 50%. Most of the vegetable seeds are orthodox and hence there is lot of scope for proper storage. E.g-Tomato (6.0 %) and Peppers (7.0%

Recalcitrant Seeds : They are short - lived seeds, which cannot be dried to moisture contents below 30% without injury and are unable to tolerate freezing. They are difficult to ore successfully because of their high moisture content encourages microbial contamination and results in more rapid seed deterioration. Storage of these seeds at subzero temperatures causes the formation of ice crystals, which disrupts cell membranes and causes freezing injury. These seeds are from perennial trees in the mois t tropics such as coconut, coffee, cacao, citrus etc. These seeds mature and exists in their fruits and are covered with fleshy or juicy ariloid layers and impermeable testa. At physiological maturity they contain more moisture content (50- 70%) than orthodox seeds, even though their embryos are only about 15 % of the size of an orthodox seed embryo. In general recalcitrant seeds never go into dormancy but instead continue their development and progress towards germination.

Under the partnership, farmers can order Bayer’s seeds and crop protection products for their entire crop lifecycle and receive agronomic advisory through Agro-Stars digital agri-tech platform. Home delivery of agri-inputs can currently be availed by farmers in North, West and Central India, with plans to extend the scope to other geographies in the future. In the current COVID-19 lockdown situation, the partnership has enabled last mile delivery of products for multiple crops directly to farmer’s doorsteps.
