Introduction

Agricultural soils harbour a rich variety of nematode fauna, where they coexist with a myriad of other microorganisms. It has been estimated that one cubic meter soil of highly fertile field may contain as many as 3×10¹⁴ bacterial cells (300 g), 5×10⁸ protozoa (39 g), 1×10⁷ nematodes (12 g) and fungi (400 g), besides other organisms. The nemic fauna comprises of free-living (saprophagous and microbivorous), predatory forms and plant parasites (phytophagous). In addition, certain animal and insect parasitic forms may spend a part of their life cycle in soil. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) exist in poly-specific communities and attack all types of plants- cultivated or wild. They possess a needle-like stylet or spear at their anterior end, which is used to puncture the plant cells and ingest the cell contents. Majority of PPNs dwell in soil and draw their nutrition from plant roots. Only a few forms attack the above ground plant parts such as stem, leaves, inflorescence and seeds. PPNs may be ectoparasites (feed from outside and do not enter plant tissues) or endoparasites (enter inside the plant tissues). The endoparasites spend a part of their life cycle in soil or may come out into the soil to re-infect the other roots. These may be further categorized into migratory or sedentary types. The migratory forms keep on moving, feeding and laying eggs that are scattered in soil or plant tissues. The sedentary nematodes are more harmful and a particular stage of their life cycle infects the plant and establishes a feeding site by modifying plant tissues by their enzymatic secretions. The females of sedentary nematodes usually attain swollen shapes upon maturity and lay hundreds of eggs in clusters.

Plant parasitic nematodes are ubiquitous, and so far, more than 1800 species have been recorded. They are obligate parasites and must feed upon plant hosts, thus, debilitating the plants to some extent. The extent of direct damage by the nematodes to plants depends on several factors viz., nematode density in soil, nature of parasitism (ectoparasite or endoparasite), host susceptibility, cropping pattern, edaphic factors (mainly soil texture and moisture) and ambient climatic conditions (like temperature and relative humidity). Nematodes, by themselves, rarely kill the plants to ensure their own survival. Nematodes also inflict considerable indirect damage to crops by interacting with other plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria and viruses) to cause disease complexes in which nematodes act as incitants, aggravators, or vectors.

Seed viability tests

Only two methods, the Topographical tetrazolium (TZ) test and the embryo excision test were previously accepted by the International Seed Testing Association as official methods for some species of seeds. ISTA has recently accepted the X-ray method as a valid alternative to the cutting test for the detection of empty and insect-damaged seeds. The following tests can be applied depending on the circumstances.

Vegetables being good source of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins and dietary fibers constitute important component of human diet. These are the cheapest source of natural protective food and increase the palatability. India is the second largest producer of vegetables next to China. Diseases are inherent component of agro-ecosystem, which must be dealt with continuous and knowledgeable basis. Diseases in the standing crop from the seedling stage until harvest and spoilage caused by microorganisms during transit, storage and marketing are major constraints in increasing production and availability of vegetables. At different stages of vegetable production, disease management requires several approaches, and it is more successful, if it is integrated into crop production system. Since vegetables are mostly grown year after year in the same fields especially near towns and cities, therefore, concerted efforts are required to manage the diseases. More than 300 diseases have been reported to occur on vegetable crops and it is beyond the scope of this chapter to discuss all the diseases. However, brief description of etiology, diagnostic symptoms and management practices being adopted are presented here for the economically important fungal and bacterial diseases of vegetable crops.

Plant viruses, like all other viruses, are obligate intracellular parasites that do not have the molecular machinery to replicate without the host. The plant viruses are defined as viruses pathogenic to higher plants. The discovery of plant viruses causing disease is accredited to Beijerinck who determined in 1898 that the plant sap obtained from tobacco leaves with the mosaic disease remained infectious even after passing through a filter. This was in contrast to bacteria, which were retained by the filter. Beijerinck referred to the infectious filtrate as a contagium vivum fluidum, thus, he used modern term virus.

Viruses occasionally cause significant problems in vegetable crops. However, the prevalence and severity of viral diseases differ from year to year. Aphids spread many of the viral diseases observed in vegetables. There are two types of viral transmission by aphids, i.e., persistent and non-persistent transmission. It is important to understand the difference between these two because persistent and non-persistent viruses differ both in their uptake and behaviour within the insect vector, consiquently, tactics used to limit their and spread vary considerably. In persistent transmission, the aphid usually carries the virus for life. Uptake of virus requires extended feeding and after an incubation period of several hours or days, the virus replicates and circulates within the insect. Because of the time required for feeding before acquisition by an insect vector, the spread of persistent virus is favoured by colonizing aphid species that spend time in the crop. Controlling the aphid vectors with insecticides can reduce the spread of persistent plant virus significantly. In contrast, aphids can acquire non-persistent viruses (NPV) within a few seconds after sampling an infected plant. Winged migratory aphids can move quickly from infected plants onto healthy ones, transmitting the virus in the process. Aphids rapidly lose the virus particles from their mouthparts, which are cleaned when they feed on the next available plant and are unable to transmit disease to additional plants. Because of the speed in which aphids acquire and transmit non-persistent viruses, insecticides are not usually effective in controlling their spread. One of the most common viruses found in many vegetable crops is cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). This is transmitted by several aphid species in a non-persistent manner. There are several strains of CMV that can infect over 775 different plant species in 85 families including snap bean, peppers, tomato, lettuce, tobacco and sugar beets. Symptoms vary depending upon the plant species infected but range may be from yellow-green mottling on leaves and fruits to severe stunting of plants. The viral diseases affecting different vegetable crops are being discussed below:

Post-harvest deterioration primarily means the loss of commodity after harvest. It is one of the serious problems for producers, distributors and consumers. Post-harvest deterioration of perishables is the spoilage of fruits and vegetables after harvesting. Perishables are the feed commodities with moisture content between 50 and 90%. Fruits with the size of 5 g to 5 kg or more, high to very high rate of respiration, high generation of heat, soft texture, easily damageable nature and shorter shelf life are more prone to the microbial damage. The post-harvest losses are caused either by pathological, physiological and mechanical means or combination of all these. These perishables because of having minerals, vitamins, and photochemicals (essentially required for the human health) become victim to the several biotic and abiotic factors easily. Once these fruits are detached from the plant are deprived of essential ingredients as hormones, nutrients, water and other requisites. These biotic and abiotic factors apart from rendering the produce unfit for human consumption reduce the aesthetic value, substantial decrease in food value and also organoleptic quality of the vegetables. The fleshy produce are prone to the exogenous agencies such as fungi, bacteria, etc. as well as other endogenous factors such as respiration, senescence, etc. which may lead to poor quality of the produce and also affect market quality. These perishables continue to respire and may carry out various biochemical activities, leading to ripening subsequently to senescence and making them more susceptible to microbial damage. In addition, tropical conditions prevailing in India, which are characterized by high temperature conditions, are optimal for fungal and bacterial infections. In India, the post-harvest losses of fresh fruits and vegetables are estimated to be about 30%. The post-harvest losses have been recorded are 5-20% at farmer’s field due to pre-harvest infection and sorting, 15-20% due to faulty packaging, 30-40% during transportation and 30-40% during marketing.

Seed Health Testing

Science of determining the presence or absence of disease causing agents such as fungi, bacteria and viruses and insects in the seed samples.

Seed Borne disease

The seed primordial or the maturing seed may be infected either (i) directly from the infected plant through the flower or fruit stalk and the seed stalk or directly from the seed surface, or (ii)infection from outside may be introduced through stigma or ovary wall or pericarp, and the flower or fruit stalk, and later through the seed coat. A pathogen may penetrate several of these parts of the seed and in turn infect them. The infestation /contamination of the seed may occur during harvesting, threshing and processing. Visualizing the importance of seed borne diseases the Central Seed Certification board has prescribed certification standards for foundation and certified seed for several diseases.

The pathogen may carry with the seeds in three ways.

• Admixture: Pathogens are independent of seeds but accompany them. They are mixed with health seeds during threshing.
• External:The pathogen may be present on seed surface as spores, oospores and chlamydospores.
• Internal: Pathogens establish within the seed with definite relationship with seed parts.

Landscaping combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One initial purpose of landscape design is to blend mans’ technology (house or building) into the natural surroundings. To work towards a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of art elements and design principles.

The “art” is always changing as the plants grow, environmental conditions change and people use the space. For this reason, landscape designers use a design process that systematically considers all aspects of the land, the environment, the growing plants, and needs of user to ensure a visually pleasing, functional, and ecologically healthy design. The design process begins by determining the needs and desires of the user and the conditions of the site. With this information, the designer then organizes the plants and hardscape materials, which are collectively referred to as the features. The features can be physically described by the visual qualities of line, form, color, texture and visual weight—the elements of design. The principles are the fundamental concepts of composition—proportion, order, repetition and unity—that serve as guidelines to arrange or organize the features to create an aesthetically pleasing or beautiful landscape. Knowledge of the elements and principles of design are essential to designing a landscape and working through the design process.

Landscape models focus on both the integrated master landscape planning of a home gardening and specific garden design. The people should be educated to realize the importance of gardening, by providing good parks and gardens in cities for a large population to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The plants used in the landscape designing of gardens are directly or indirectly involved in increasing the aesthetic value of the city, changing microclimate, social behaviour of the people, checking pollution etc. The importance of landscape gardening in human welfare cannot be overlooked. Even in an under-developed country as India, people do not live by bread alone. They also need some finer things of life. The models described in this chapter are very basic features of any garden.

Garden Walls

A garden lover will never like to block the view of his garden by putting a wall along periphery of the garden. A garden as it is enjoyed from inside should also be visible from outside but sometimes, it is necessary from safety and beauty point of view to obscure the ugly sight of an open drain. A compromise is to have a low brick wall of say 60-90 cm height and to put over it some grills, so that the view is not totally obstructed from outside. Alternatively, walls from 1.80 to 5.0 m may also be erected based upon the size of the garden.

Mans’ progress in this universe is posing a threat to the environment, we live in. If we do not treat the environment well, nature will have its own repercussions and we will inevitably have to bear the consequences. We have already begun to suffer for not taking care of mother earth in the past. The earth is warming up each year and this rise in temperature will have its effects on the earths’ inhabitants. Pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, extinction of species, depletion of ozone layer, soil erosion and floods are some of the commonly heard problems of the environment and they are seem to be inter related. The objective of ornamental horticulture is the functional and aesthetic integration of people, building and site, using plants and space as its main tools. The necessity of it in landscape architecture is for positive control of the fast changing landscape for the future. Landscape architecture can help a major way to alleviate the earths’ problems. The landscape which includes urban, agricultural forests and other lands becomes a component of nature and thus ensuring that our landscapes are healthy in the first step towards this goal. The landscape gardener is a necessity because very a few people are capable of selecting the right kind of plants for their grounds; they cannot imagine a landscape picture in terms of varieties and groups, the way an expert can. Planning a piece of land with ornamental plants and features transforming it into a beautiful garden requires experience, patience and knowledge about land topography, soils and climatic factors.

The vividity of the garden depends on its design, features and the most vitally on plants, the key elements which make the garden enliven. Selection of variety of ornamentals is done in order to exhibit different form of growth, flowering time, leaf and stem texture, flower colour etc. Therefore trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, bulbous plants and ornamental grasses usually find place in the garden along with other secondary groups. Plants play a pivotal role in the protection of our environment as well as improving human life. Apart from their physical characteristics, plants aid in cleaning the environment and reducing some of the harsher effects of heat, sound, wind, air and also serves as complementor, attractor, emphasizer, diverter, indicators and provide aesthetic function by creating attractiveness for human activities.

The green buildings are the needs of present day in India as well in the world. The easy availability of most of the green materials and equipments in the country has made it easier for designers to adopt local materials to a very large extent in the construction of green buildings. Now, there is an imminent need for service providers, who would be required in large number, not in hundreds but in thousands, as the movement is heading to reach greater heights. The green building movement is here to stay for the benefit of individuals, society and the country at large in the era of climate change.

With increase in the urbanization and industrialization, there is more pressure on available land and natural resources. In coming era, there will be only limited space available for city dwellers. In buildings one can grow a wide range of flowering and foliage plants. Plants not necessarily one confined to the outdoor only but bed room, kitchen, staircases, patios, windows and other locations can be made green with suitable plants. Indian Council of Green Building (ICGB) has developed the rating system.

A large amount of materials are used and energy consumed in construction and operation of average building. Many steps have been taken to reduce consumption of energy by developing new types of vehicle, energy sources, recycled materials and designing environment friendly buildings. These buildings are also known as green buildings or green construction or sustainable building.

Cities or urban conglomerations are fast developing and where the rate of land availability has infinitesimally small; vertical expansion and taller buildings have emerged and are defining the city skyline. Though this may speak well of the economic development, but the increase in hard paved areas and roads may spell trouble for the environment as urban heat island (UHI) effect. The causes of Urban Heat Island are primarily due to the absorption of solar radiation (Short wave) by building/urban materials that is subsequently re-radiated (long wave) to the surroundings. In addition, heat generated from the use of air- conditioning coupled with the greenhouse effect of pollutants also contribute to the increase in temperature. Such increase in temperature with the presence of air pollutants can result in the accumulation of smog, damages the natural environment and jeopardizes human health. It also costs consumers more money because it takes more energy to cool buildings. Who can forget the regular news of Beijing repeatedly topping the list of most polluted cities and fresh air is available in cans!

Fresh air cans are in no means a firm solution. Plants are atmosphere cleansers, can serve to filter carbon dioxide and other toxins in environment, cool the air by transpiration and also provide cooling shade. Research work shows the benefits of using light colour roofs and roof gardens to minimize the heat gain inside the buildings. This would in turn reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning in buildings. Rooftops, balconies and terraces have often been referred to as the “last urban frontier” of cities, in the sense that they represent the last significant remaining space to be exploited to create a green oasis and an area of relative peace and privacy away from the urban bustle. Given the social, economic and environmental contributions of urban greenery to the quality of life in cities and the realization that cities more often than not lack sufficient greenery, greening of rooftops, balconies and terraces is therefore a logical, effective and high impact way to re-inject the much needed greenery in urban settings thus reinventing the concept of hanging gardens.

Lawn is an integral part of any garden and it gives pleasure while sitting during evening in summer and one can enjoy good sunshine during winter. Hence, it is often referred as “heart of the garden”. It is covered with perennial grass and provides open landscape to the house and adds aesthetic beauty to the surroundings. Good lawn is essential to have in a good garden. It is permanent feature, which occupies 60% share of total garden area. Here in this chapter lawn is divided into two parts. There are approximately 620 genera and 10,000 species of grasses worldwide. Grasses are used extensively used throughout the world for their beauty and utility. Grasses are found from temperate to tropical to arid semi arid regions and suits in most extreme climatic conditions and have adapted to a worldwide climate and zones. Grasses are used as fodder, food, medicinal and for aesthetics purpose and it belongs to family Gramineae.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of Computer Technology for the design of objects which are real or virtual. CAD involves more than just shapes. As in the manual drafting of technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD must convey information such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances according to application-specific conventions. CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) objects.

The landscape gardening for aesthetic appreciation is an integral part of the progress achieved through the growing world floriculture business that has reached a $ 40 billion mark and valueless aesthetic emotional gains. The industry is continuously rising through transitional changes to have more accepted and unique applications as a wide and economic choice to the consumers with regards to the energy saving in the system. The use of energy for sustenance of the landscape plants before and after planting can be a benchmark in time to come as no one can believe that the plants instead can grow with still better traits either be it the foliage colour, variegation, shape, size and or form beside the fact that the consumption of such altered/compact plants has increased manifold in house, gardens, parks and indoors with a large number of products worldwide in a eco-friendly manner.

At the same time there is great environmental consciousness towards transforming landscape gardening with more natural and unspoiled system of growing plants and maintaining them in the landscape as perennial ones. The system being independent of distance of use or application offers an ease of transport into a mass for large-scale uniform planting. This is the fact that in the recent times, the commercial growers do not rely on the nature to introduce the genetic mutation that will make them millionaires but depends on the art and scientific knowhow to create a novelty in its own. This has resulted in the seriousness and painstaking effort of the growers to produce the plants round the year in new forms and shapes to put forward a new plant with extra-ordinary marketable characteristics every year, e.g. compact chrysanthemum, kalanchoe, bromeliads, orchids, etc are some of the common products with an unusual and eye-catching hue in the auction markets. Similarly, a large number of annual and perennial plants perfectly suited for various kind of landscaping, slope, soil types and moisture regimes under the specific and artificial environment created for a specific growth of the plant.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is highly mountainous except for a short belt joining the Punjab plains. Geographically, the state of Jammu and Kashmir is divided into three regions -alpine desert of Ladakh, subtropical region of Jammu and predominantly temperate region of Kashmir valley. The valley is rich in herbaceous flora with huge potential for landscape use, however, many of which are still not exploited much for the purpose. Plants which live and bloom year after year are known as perennials which have an importance of their own and are backbone of any well-planned garden. The stems of herbaceous perennials die at the ground level each winter. They comprise a vast group of plants widely differing in size, leaf texture, flower color and are found in all the gardening countries of the world. The monotonous spread of concrete and glass in cities can have a dehumanizing effect. Growing colourful flowers in the house compound and in the parks will greatly enhance the beauty of surroundings in the countryside, the towns and cities. Flowers also bring happiness to life and boast the sagging spirits. The assemblage and display of colourful and attractive herbaceous perennials can achieve very significant and telling effects on the environment particularly in the landscaping of the house compounds, gardens, parks, health resorts and hotels. Now a day herbaceous plants are also used therapeutically to cure several problems related to humans. Judicious selection of native and introduced herbaceous perennials should camouflage with the type of habitation, building pattern, colour of the countryside etc. These plants should occupy only well thought of position in the landscape. There are always a number of shady spots in our lawns/gardens especially towards north-east side of a structure where lawn grass fails to grow or show poor growth. These spots can be converted into perennial herbaceous border of foliage plants.

Trees and shrubs are often the most dominant plants in landscapes but ground covers and vines play an important role too. The low spreading form of ground covers can connect and unify major planting areas and even serve as a focal point when the plants are flowering. In contrast to annuals, perennials provide savings in time, labour and expenses each year because where adapted to a specific climate zone, they can successfully over come winter and re- establish for more than a single growing season. Perennials are probably the most diverse plant group, providing a huge variety of shape, form, colour, texture and scent with which to design a planting. Since there is an increasing trend and awareness of planned landscaping in the public and in view of its value in preserving the environment, there is an urgent need to identify and select the appropriate native, naturalized and exotic planting material for specific sites /locations. The Meaning of Xeriscape

The word xeriscaping (pronounced zer-iskap- ing) is commonly referred to as water-wise or water-smart gardening. Xeros is derived from the Greek word meaningdry’. However, do not let the Greek derivative conjure up images of a dry, desert-like, “blandscape.” Xeriscaping and Xerogardening refer to landscape gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation. It is promoted in areas that do not have easily accessible supplies of fresh water and is gaining acceptance in other areas as climate pattern changes. Xeriscape is a proactive approach to curbing wasteful use of a valuable natural resource. Xeriscaping, is a seven step method that combines innovative water conservation techniques with sound horticultural practices. Not only it is possible to have a colorful and beautiful landscape while conserving water, but it can become more sustainable while saving you time, energy and money.

Often it is thought that a xeriscape means the use of all native or low water use plants, resulting in limited plant selection. However xeriscapes can incorporate hundreds of plant choices including trees, shrubs, evergreens, perennials and grasses. Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water through evaporation and run off. The specific plants used in xeriscaping depend upon the climate. The concept originated in Denver, Colorado, in early 1980s. Because of severe drought conditions, Denver rationed water and prohibited irrigation of lawns and yards. As a result, vegetation in yards withered, and Denver landscapers began promoting what they called xeriscape, a landscaping approach that uses small amounts of water but maintains a traditional look. In some areas, terms likes water-conserving landscapes, drought tolerant landscaping, zeroscaping and smart scaping are used instead.

Bonsai is an art of growing and training of a woody plant in a miniature form in a shallow container imitating natural look of an old aged tree. It differs from a pot plant where either the foliage or the flower is the main criterion, but here the artistic look of the tree in a miniature and natural form maintained for many years is desired.

The word Bonsai’ is a combination of two Japanese words, Bon (meaning shallow pan) and Sai (meaning plant), which can be translated as “tray planting”. By growing the trees in shallow containers, the growth is checked or dwarfed but the plant is not starved. A properly maintained bonsai should outlive a full size tree of the same species. Bonsai is a small tree in comparison to its huge life-sized tree of the same species. Thus, Bonsai is specially trained ordinary tree or plant, not special hybrid dwarfs. Bonsai culture is viewed as a hobby that allows greater understanding and association with nature. This art of bonsai is linked with Zen Buddhism - where this art originated as pastime that merged with natural elements and developed into a unique method of meditation and expression. The bonsai is even expressed as “heaven and earth in one container”

Bonsai is developed from seeds, cuttings, layering or grafting from young trees or from naturally occurring stunted trees transplanted into shallow containers. Most bonsai range in height from 5 centimeter (2 inch) to 1.2 meter (4 ft). Bonsai is kept small and trained by pruning branches and roots, periodic repotting, pinching off new growth and wiring the branches and trunk for giving desired shape. Tradition holds that three basic virtues are necessary to create a bonsai: shin-zen-bi standing for truth, goodness and beauty which are parallel to Hindu concept of Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram. The bonsai must look natural and should never show the intervention of human hands (with the exception of Chinese bonsai which in many cases depicts images of dragons and other influential symbols of the culture at the time of origination). Bonsai is primarily kept outdoors in partial shade with exception of some plants suited, trained and indoor grown. In traditional Japanese rooms, there is a tokonoma, the alcove, specially designed for the display of bonsai on special occasions. Bonsai can live for hundreds of years with utmost care and the prized specimens are being passed from generation to generation, admired for their age and valued as a reminder of those who have cared for them over the centuries.

Horticulture and allied sector are integral elements for food and nutritional security in the country. Horticulture is the main segment, while its various sub- segments are fruits, vegetables, aromatic and herbal plants, flowers, spices, tubers, plantation crops and ornamental plants. All these are regarded as essential ingredients of economic security. The wide range of agro-climatic conditions of India is conducive for growing a large variety of horticultural crops, including, root and tuber crops, mushroom and ornamental crops.

The Government of India recognized horticulture crops as a means of diversification in agriculture in an eco-friendly manner through efficient use of land and optimum utilization of natural resources. Horticulture seeks to create ample opportunities for employment, particularly for unemployed youths and women folk. India has maintained leadership in the production of many commodities like fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants and particularly in landscape business.

India is coming up in landscaping and ornamental horticulture. There is wide scope since large number of MNC and business houses have come up in India. The purchasing power of people has increased to a greater extent.

Thus, over the years, much progress are made for advancement of horticulture and allied sector. Rising investments resulted in increased production and availability of horticultural produces in the rural and urban areas. Many schemes and policies were introduced from time to time for upliftment and commercialization of the sector. Large number of investors are taking advantage of the existing potentials in the sector, as well as trying to explore the untapped potentials in the field of horticulture.

Introduction

Bougainvillea is a popular ornamental plant in the tropics and sub-tropics of the world. The plant is mainly grown for its attractive bracts in wide array of colours which splash colour to the surrounding where it grows. Wide adaptability to different agro-climatic conditions and easy multiplication has made it a popular ornamental plant of the world. Considering the contribution made by India, The international registration authority for new cultivars lies with The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi which is an international recognition conferred upon by International Society for Horticultural Science.

Introduction

Floriculture is a fast emerging, rapidly expanding industry in the present scenario. The importance of flowers has been realized throughout the world and now it has been developed into an intensive form of agriculture. Flowers play an integral role in life of each and every human being. They are the part and parcel of day to day activities. There is common saying with flowers that a man is born with flowers, live with flowers and dies with flowers. This shows the importance of flowers in our lives since time immemorial. The flowers create an atmosphere of beauty, happiness and harmony. With the fast changing lifestyles, floriculture can become a lucrative business in India in view of low labour cost, varied agro climatic conditions and large collection of plant wealth.

Among flowers, loose flowers hold an important place in terms of high demand for usage in various religious and social ceremonies. They are mainly used for worshipping, making floral garlands, floral decorations in wedding, religious functions, interior decoration, self adornment etc. The earlier trend of using flowers for aesthetic value is changing slowly into business with the realization of its vast economic potential as value addition of flowers by drying, extraction of essential oils, colouring pigments, antioxidants etc. is also gaining importance.

In India, mostly loose flowers dominate the domestic market. Marigold, jasmine, tuberose, crossandra and china aster are the major loose flowers grown in India. Production technology of these flowers is described as:

Flowers and plants are associated with mankind from the dawn of civilization. In the modern era these have become an integral part of human life, as love for flowers and ornamental plants is a common natural instinct in human beings. The catchy flowers glowing and glowing in all their grandeurs with simplicity always make them tempting to wish the season to continue for never ending, but it may be beyond reach of human beings. However, the answer for it could be by producing and preserving ever-lasting or long-lasting flowers and other attractive ornamental plant parts. These are now becoming favorites especially with the adventurous flower lovers across the globe. The beauty and fresh look of cut flowers and cut foliage is generally lost due to microbial activities and biochemical changes thus these are retained only for a few days even by using the best techniques of post harvest management (Datta, 1999). The charm of dried ornamental plant parts can be maintained from a few months to years with lesser cost if protected from the damage of high humidity as in dried flowers, the microbial activities in the aging process come to stand still.

The main characteristics of dried ornamentals are novelty, longevity, aesthetics, flexibility and year-round availability. The dehydrated or dried ornamentals are generally inexpensive and are sought for their everlasting and attractive appearance globally (Smith, 2000). Being largely focused on the qualities of attractive flowers, living plants and plant parts, floriculturists generally pay little attention to dried and preserved flowers and plants. Therefore, these products remained overlooked and underrated throughout the world. These are overlooked in the sense that their considerable economic importance is generally unrecognized and these are underrated in the sense that their aesthetic contribution is largely discounted. In contrast to other areas of floriculture including post-harvest management, relatively very little public funded research and development projects were undertaken on the dried flower industry across the globe (Joyce, 1998). This has slowed the pace in optimizing the dehydration technology and quality of the produces. Privately funded research and development work has sustained, but such findings are usually kept secret and limited information are available to the common man. Thus, this component of floriculture industry has remained ill defined with respect to the processes, products and organizations in the developed and developing countries. As we see in major cut flower crops, there are defined standards available for judging the quality, however these are lacking in dried ornamentals. There is an urgent need to start war- footing efforts and awareness on the dried ornamentals to attract greater public support to conduct concentrated research and development with more professionalism in the trade of these products.

A greenhouse with all measures of climate control is one important component for integrated greenhouse crop production and protection. However, the growing period is very often limited to few months in the year, because of insufficient ventilation and cooling in summer as well as heating in winter. Structures and shapes of greenhouses are adapted insufficiently to climate conditions. Climate control and greenhouse structures have to be adapted and optimized with regard to outside climate, and growers must be trained in these adapted technologies. A greenhouse structure with light transmittance (through framework and cladding material), ventilation, heating, cooling, and protection from insect pests by screening, as well as all influences of management, irrigation, fertilization, water quality, physical and biological plant protection is an integrated system. Greenhouse structures should be designed according to the climate conditions and to the general design criteria, as well as to the locally available and cost-effective materials. The import of greenhouses from countries with a different climate fails very often, because they are not adapted to the local conditions. Even an appropriate greenhouse structure can fail if mounting and continuous maintenance are not guaranteed. Temperatures and global radiation allow open-air crop production throughout the year in many subtropical and tropical countries.

Vegetable and flower production are significantly influenced by the seasonality and weather conditions. The extent of their production causes considerable fluctuations in the prices and quality of vegetables. Striking a balance between all-season availability of vegetables and flowers with minimum environmental impact, and still to remain competitive, is a major challenge for the implementation of modern technology of crop production.

The floriculture industry, at present, comprises of the cultivation and trade of cut and loose flowers, potted plants, foliage and bedding plants and dried flowers under open field as well as under protected environment conditions. Globally, more than 145 countries are involved in cultivation of floriculture crops. Though the art of growing flowers is not new to India, large scale commercial cultivation especially protected cultivation in poly houses is relatively new in India. Enormous genetic diversity, varied agroclimatic conditions and versatile human resources offers India a unique scope for diversification in to new avenues which were not explored to a greater extent. India also has a strong dry flower industry which contributes a major share to the overall trade. Other segments like fillers, potted plants, seeds and planting material turf grass industry and value added products also contribute a share in the overall growth of floriculture sector.

Cut flower production is a growing business in most Asian countries as the result of higher per capita income of people. Technology for production is well known and has been utilized to the maximum in many countries. As a consequence, cut flowers are commercially produced in larger quantities in these countries resulting in surpluses during normal periods of blooming, end result of which is a lower price for cut flowers. On the other hand, such prices are much higher during periods of needs such as certain special occasions, or off-season.

Ornamentals are beautiful plants used in home and urban landscaping to enhance quality of our lives. Ornamental crops are widely cultivated worldwide and appreciated for their characteristics and unique appreciable qualities such as attractive color, impressive shape and size of flower and for fragrance of flowers and foliage. Earlier ornamental plants were largely associated with our social life. Of late trends has changed towards commercialization and now they are used for decoration, personal adornment and value added products viz. dry flowers, extraction of essential oils, perfumes and dyes and in landscaping. Further, it helps in creating more job opportunities for youth and women.

The growing demands for quality flowers, introduction of new ornamental plants and diversification needs more attention in ornamental floriculture industry. Novelty is the key to success in ornamental horticulture. Introduction of exotic ornamentals and the domestication and release of new genotypes of wild ornamentals is always welcome in this connection. Some exotic ornamentals hitherto not widely grown in Indian gardens as well as a few native ornamentals with capability to bring in a color revolution and having the potential for exploitation are discussed below.

Abstract

High precision Geodetic Global Positioning System measurements have become important for studying present-day tectonics in active orogenic belts such as the Himalayas. Geodetic Global Positioning System measurements in the Darjiling-Sikkim Himalayas (DSH) during 2000-2004 indicate that the frontal part of the Darjiling Himalaya is locked to the Indian plate and statistically negligible shortening is accumulating there at present. While this observation is in conformity with observations made in Nepal to the west of the DSH, it differs in the fact that about ~ 12 mm/yr of convergence is accommodated in the DSH and the western Bhutan Himalayas as opposed to about ~ 20 mm/yr in Nepal Himalaya. About 16 mm of convergence is accommodated in the Arunachal Himalaya, to the east of DSH, of which about 6 mm is accommodated in the Lesser Arunachal Himalaya. These observations indicate that there is a fair amount of heterogeneity in the way convergence is accommodated along the length of the Himalayan arc and the Himalayan seismic hazard estimations need to account for this. Seismicity patterns in the DSH indicate that active deformation in the area is driven by strike-slip as well as thrust tectonics. Strain accumulation in the DSH during 2000-2004 appears to be dominated by strike-slip tectonics in the region and about ~ 4-5 mm/yr of sinistral strike-slip is observed along a NNE-SSW trending near-vertical fault identified in the area (named as the Gish transverse fault).

Abstract

Ten GPS stations have been set up in campaign mode in North Bengal in the Himalayan foothills and frontal zone, of which 7 have been reoccupied. Data from these 7 GPS stations over the period December, 2005 – January, 2007 have been processed using GAMIT/GLOBK suite of software and the velocities of these stations have been estimated. Since the data obtained so far cover a span of one year only, the conclusions derived from them are to be considered as preliminary. The stations are found to be moving at the rate of ~ 40-55 mm/yr in ITRF05 reference frame towards NNE. The baseline between LHAS (Lhasa) and IISC (Bangalore) is estimated to be shortened by ~10.2 mm over the period of our measurement. The southernmost station in our study, NBUV, at Siliguri is more or less collinear with LHAS-IISC baseline. The shortening of NBUV-IISC line is estimated to be ~ 3.8 mm over this period and that of NBUV-LHAS line is ~ 6.4 mm for the same period. These GPS stations were set up across the parallel set of previously marked fault scarps named Matiali (MT), Chalsa (CL) and Baradighi (BD) faults in North Bengal between longitudes 88⁰ E and 89⁰ E. The results from the GPS measurements show that stations to the south of the BD fault are moving at a faster rate than those to the north of MT fault. The baseline between stations AMBK (Ambiok) and NBUV has shortened by ~3 mm over the period of our observation. These two are the northernmost and southernmost stations respectively with respect to the three E-W running parallel faults and thus the shortening of baseline AMBK-NBUV is due to movements on the set of three faults taken together. A N-S to NNE-SSW running line of discontinuity between 88.5⁰ E and 89⁰ E longitudes separates the velocity vectors of the set of stations SAMS, JITI, PMSM, BRDH to the east of the line and the set of stations NBUV, BGKT, AMBK to the west. The line of demarcation of the two blocks containing the two sets of stations appears to coincide with the Gish transverse zone (GTZ).

Abstract

This paper presents a kinematic analysis for explaining the spatial and temporal variations of deformational structures in the Cuddapah Proterozoic orogenic belt, South India. This belt shows virtually undeformed, flat-lying sedimentary rocks in its western margin, whereas strongly deformed and folded rocks in the eastern boundary. The structural variations indicate increasing deformation in the east direction, implying a relative tectonic convergence from the east side. Based on the corner flow theory, we use a viscous model to determine the heterogeneous strain field in the asymmetric convergent zone, and explain varying deformations from the foreland to hinterland. According to this model, the strain field in the hinterland part varies in a pulsating manner with progressive crustal thickening, giving rise to multiple deformational structures in the course of a single continuous tectonic movement. We also studied the strain field in finite element models considering the gravity forces, and obtained similar results. The foreland vergence of deformational structures in the Cuddapah belt indicates a top-to-west horizontal shear during the overall horizontal contraction. Our numerical models show that this horizontal shear component in the foreland region is likely to be associated with a vertical shear component in the hinterland.

Abstract

Grain size distribution patterns of five rivers – Hooghly, Bhagirathi, Damodar, Ajoy and the Usri, were critically analyzed and compared with three model distributions: log-normal, log-hyperbolic and log-skew-Laplace. The log-normal and log-skew-Laplace are the limiting distributions of log-hyperbolic family. The Hooghly-Bhagirathi river system from where the sand samples were collected is tidal in nature whereas the other three rivers are non-tidal. The tidal effect on grain size distribution patterns was also studied. Bed load samples were collected from the foreset of different bedform sizes. A total number of 126 sediment samples were collected from different sections of the rivers under study.

It is observed that the grain size distribution pattern of the tidal stretch of the Hooghly-Bhagirathi river system has a tendency of attaining a log-skew-Laplace distribution model whereas the other three non-tidal river sediments show a clear log-normal distribution pattern as a best-fit statistical model.

A possible reason has been attributed. During prolonged transport of bed material, the coarser and finer sediments are separated in the following manner: coarser sediments are buried below the advancing ripple fronts whereas the finer sediments are transported further downstream as suspension load. As a result, sediments of a narrow range of size classes are active in the distribution pattern giving rise to symmetric and unimodal distribution patterns which are the main criteria of log-normality. On the other hand, due to the upstream and downstream movement during sediment transportation in tidal reaches, the same sediments are constantly reworked and the segregation of different size fractions is hindered causing a log-skew-Laplace distribution pattern.

Abstract

The study of size, shape and pattern of various bones in the skull of vertebrate fossils constitutes the foundation of their taxonomy and plays a role in understanding their evolution as well. Size and shape change during lifetime, and the growth of an individual bone involves both isotropic enlargement of its boundary due to uniform growth and differential enlargement that changes its shape. This paper attempts to develop a methodology for quantitative assessment of the pattern of ontogenic shape changes for all the individual skull roof bones of a taxon (Benthosuchus) of an extinct amphibian (temnospondyl) from the Lower Triassic of Russia. Published diagrams depicting skulls of different ontogenic stages have been used. A measure for the degree of shape changes is also proposed. In this study, the skull roof bones in dorsal view were represented as polygons. The boundary of each polygon of a juvenile skull was compared with that of an adult. For comparative purpose, the polygons of the younger skull were placed optimally inside that of the older skull, under the assumption of maximised uniform (isotropic) growth. The variance of the distances between the two boundaries measured at a number of points along the boundaries was considered as a measure for the degree of shape change. The results obtained are in partial concurrence with the published observations traditionally obtained from anatomical studies for the above mentioned growth series.

Abstract

A key problem in spatial-mathematical-model-based mineral potential mapping is the selection of appropriate functions that can effectively approximate the complex relationship between target mineral deposits and recognition criteria. This paper evaluates a series of spatial mathematical models based on different linear and non-linear functions by applying them to base-metal potential mapping of the Aravalli province, western India. Linear models applied are an extended weights-of-evidence model and a hybrid fuzzy weights-of-evidence model, while non-linear models are knowledge and data-driven fuzzy models, a neural network model, a hybrid neuro-fuzzy model and an augmented naive Bayesian classifier model. The parameters of the knowledge-driven fuzzy model are estimated from the expert knowledge, while those of the neural network and Bayesian classifier model are estimated from the data. The two hybrid models use both expert knowledge and data for parameter estimation.

As compared to the linear models, the non-linear models generally perform better in predicting the known base-metal deposits in the study area. Although the linear models do not fit the data as efficiently as the non-linear models, they are easier to implement using basic GIS functionalities and their parameters are more amenable to geoscientific interpretation. In addition, the linear models are less susceptible to the curse of dimensionality as compared to non-linear models, which makes them more suitable for applications to mineral potential mapping of the areas where there is a paucity of training mineral deposits. The hybrid models that conjunctively use both knowledge and data for parameter estimation generally perform better than purely knowledge-driven or purely data-driven models.

Abstract

As part of the Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) project, an Enterprise-wide Geographic Information System has been implemented through which Intranet / Internet users enjoying different access levels can quickly search for, locate and visualize geoscientific information generated by Geological Survey of India (GSI). The proposed system will provide real-time response to information needs and will use secure Internet technology to deliver information to bonafide users. It consists of an application that will enable data owners to load new data sets, update/replace existing data sets in a highly secure environment, load and maintain metadata about their data sets in a Data Catalog and a subsystem that will query, search, locate and display geoinformation stored in the centralized Geodatabase.

Enterprise GIS has been deployed primarily using a relational database, a spatial database engine tool, an Internet Map server tool, and integrating the existing ArcGIS desktop GIS clients. The approach is to import data from distributed data sources into the centralized repository using a customized extraction-transformation-loading (ETL) tool, thereby making appropriate structural changes to ensure homogeneity at various levels, and load into the main Geodatabase.

While delineating the functionalities of enterprise GIS solution an earnest attempt was made to accommodate the diverse needs of the organization, including its processes, activities, products and the whole gamut of users at different levels from the field geologist to the decision makers. An effort was also made to standardize various data automation processes and to iron out the heterogeneities existing in legacy data. Ultimately, GSI aspires to create a seamless geospatial database for the entire geographic extent of the country, which can be easily shared by the geoscientific community.

Chemicals which are used specifically for the control of mite pests are known as acaricides, though there are many insecticides, which show acaricidal properties as well. In the last few decades, there has been tremendous progress in the development of broad-spectrum acaricides i.e. the compounds that will knock down different species of mites at the same time. Prior to the commercial introduction of broad-spectrum insecticides like DDT and other organochlorine insecticides, mites did not commercially cause wide-spread damage under natural or semi-natural environments which were little influenced by man. This might be due to the natural processes of prey-predator relationship in undisturbed situations. Contrastingly in situations where broad-spectrum pesticides are commonly used, the natural enemies are more adversely affected than the mites, and an outbreak of the latter occurs. Besides becoming generally intensified with the introduction of modern insecticides, the mite problem in some cases has subsequently become even more serious due to development of resistance against these materials.

Many spider mite species, which were rarely found in pest form in some situations, appeared commonly as major pests with the persistent use of pesticides. In Indian literature, spider mites were never reported in pest form prior to 1940 but with the intensive use of pesticides, every year new mite problems are appearing and becoming troublesome to control.

The vegetables form an essential component of the human diet especially in case of India and some South Asian countries where sizeable population is vegetarian. India ranks second in the production of vegetables after China and occupy 5.993 million hectares area and the total annual production is around 90.83 metric tonnes (Gopalakrishnan, 2007). There is a need of around 5-6 million tones of food to feed 1.3 billion India’ population by 2020 AD. It is an established fact that any attempt at improvement of agricultural production by using new cultivars with the recommended package of practices has invariably resulted in the increase in activity of damage by pests and diseases. Vegetables are more prone to insect-pests and diseases mainly due to their succulence as compared to other crops. The pest problems on vegetables can be more serious because of the favourable conditions which are provided for multiplication by the present methods of cultivation. The major constraints in vegetable production include the extensive crop losses due to increased pest infestation directly or due to viral diseases vectored by insects. The extent of crop losses in vegetables varies with the plant type, location, damage potential of the pest involved and cropping season. The crop losses to the tune of 40 per cent have observed in vegetable crops. The increased demand and limited productivity of local cultivars, led to introduction of high yielding varieties and hybrids. As a result dramatic changes in pest scenario occurred and minor pests became major pests. Indiscriminate use of pesticides has led to severe ecological consequences like destruction of natural enemies, effect on non-target organisms, pesticide residues in vegetables and resistance of the pests to pesticides. The modern pest management is aimed at educating the farmers on various issues of pest management like identification of the pests, natural enemies, and judicious use of pesticides with alternate methods of pest control like cultural, mechanical, biological and behavioural (use of pheromones) management. The strategy for the control of insect-pests on vegetable crops is necessarily to be different from the other crops because of the nature of utilization of vegetables. This is especially true in the case of chemical control. Insecticides which are highly toxic and are known to leave hazardous residues cannot be recommended on vegetables. The vegetable crops have been grouped into summer and winter vegetables depending upon their season of cultivation in majority of areas. The present chapter deals with the insect pests infesting summer and winter vegetables and their possible management options.

Mites are small arthropods which attack number of crops damaging different parts of the plants (leaves, buds, flowers and fruits) and due to short duration of life cycle and high fecundity, their population increases at a fast rate and when feeding in large numbers they become serious pest of many crops. Since last few years the menace of mites is on the increase in Indian sub-continent causing enormous losses. One of the probable reasons for it is attributed to excessive use of broad-spectrum pesticides, which have led to the development of resistance in mites. Further, owing to their deleterious effect on non target organisms, especially natural enemies of the mites in the ecosystem there is often a spurt in the population of mites which otherwise may be of minor pest category. Because of their small size, the infestation goes unnoticed in the beginning and by the time prominent symptoms appear a lot of damage has already been done.

FRUIT CROPS

In fruit crops, being perennial in nature, the infestation of mites not only affects the trees at a particular time but their overall vigour gets reduced which is reflected in reduction in production as well as poor quality of the fruit in the years to come. The identification characters, nature of damage and the symptoms must be well understood in order to manage the mite pests effectively. A number of mites are associated with various fruit crops and those infesting major fruit crops are discussed herewith.

Fruits are very important in human diet, as they are chief sources of vitamins and micronutrients. Variable agro-climatic condition in India provides tremendous scope for cultivation of fruit crops. Among fruits, apple, pear, cherry, plum, peach, apricot, walnut and almond (temperate fruits); mango, grapes, banana, citrus, pineapple (tropical and subtropical fruits); pomegranate (arid zone fruit) are important fruit grown in India. Insect-pests are amongst one of the major constraint for the low productivity of fruit crops in India. Therefore, it is important to have some information of the important insect-pests of fruit tree and their management. Over 1000 species of insects found damaging fruit trees all over the world, of these as many as 800 insect species have been intercepted from India (Butani, 1979). The information on insect pests of apple and other temperate fruits in India have been reviewed by several workers (Pruthi and Batra, 1960; Butani, 1979; Bhalla and Gupta, 1993; Sharma and Thakur, 1996). In India, more than 200 insect species on apple trees (Bhalla and Pawar, 1977), 70 species on pear, 80 species on peach, 60 species on plum, 30 species on apricot (Butani, 1979), 85 species on grapevine (Tandon and Verghese, 1994), 175 species on mango, 182 species on banana (Dhaliwal et al., 2006) and 250 species of insect and mites on citrus (Pruthi and Mani, 1945; Wadhi and Batra, 1964; Rajput and Hari Babu, 1985; Tandon, 1993) have been reported. The important insect-pests of fruits are as follows:

Rodents are well recognized pests and are considered the number one enemy of man. These animals, though considered primitive, have been so successful and abundant worldwide that they alone account for more than half of the known mammalian fauna. They can subsist on a variety of food and even without water for a long time. Due to their prowess of adaptability, they have successfully adapted to varied ecological and physiological niches, and therefore are inhabitants of practically each and every latitude and altitude. They multiply at super fast speed because they become sexually mature when they are just 6-8 months old. They then pose a challenge to man in all respects. According to Prakash (1988) in India there are 135 species and about 300 sub-species of rodents belonging to 46 genera. At least 15 of these rodent species are known to be the serious pest of public health hazard (Jain and Tripathi, 1988). Rodents not only damage the crops in the fields, where the infestation occurs at all stages of food production, processing, storage and distribution, they are also responsible for a number of diseases in the human beings.

Rodents attack the-crops shortly after sowing, during the vegetative growth and during the ripening of the seed heads. They damage the various crops of the kharif season viz., jowar, maize, ground nut and cotton as well as the crops of the rabi season viz., wheat and barley etc. They damage other crops also which include paddy, sugarcane, soyabean and Bengal gram etc. Hence some well planned rodent management is the need of the time and before going for the planning of any control method in a given situation it is essential to have an estimation of the population and the species involved.

The modern improved crop varieties are responsive to fertilizers and demand higher fertilizer application rates to sustain high grain yields. With higher fertilizer inputs, the pest problems have become prominent and endangered the yields necessitating the large scale use of agrochemicals. Some of these chemicals are purposefully released or they may be accidentally released into the environment as waste water or residues from industrial manufacturing and processing of fields.

Soil is one of the most dynamic sites of biological interactions in nature, serving as a growth medium for vegetation and as a habitat for microorganisms and thus has a major role in determining the overall quality of our environment. The physicochemical properties of soil strongly influence the growth, activities and population dynamics of microorganisms in soil and also modify the effects of chemicals on the microbial community. Microorganisms are scavengers in soil. Due to physiological variability, they degrade a variety of chemical substances including insecticides, fungicides and herbicides in soil to derive energy and other nutrients for their growth and metabolism (El- Shahaat et al., 1987; Bhuyan et al., 1993). As a result, the population density of the active microorganisms increases which favorably influences the biological transformation of nutrient elements in the soil (Rangaswamy and Venkateswarlu, 1993; Jana et al., 1998). On the other hand, there are many pesticides which exert adverse effect on growth of soil microorganisms (Martinez-Toledo et al., 1992). However, no definite conclusions can be made on the effects of different pesticides on the growth and activities of microorganisms in soil since different groups of insecticides exhibit manifold variations in toxicity. The degree to which a pesticide affects microbial population and their activities is largely dependent upon the chemical, its dosage and the particular physicochemical parameters of the environment such as soil type, temperature, water content, pH, method of application and other factors. Soil physicochemical factors are particularly important and probably account for the variations in toxic effects often seen with the same compound. Some of the soil microorganisms and soil microbial processes appear to be more sensitive to pesticides than the others. For example nitrification appears to be highly sensitive whereas N-mineralization is relatively resistant. These results reflect the diversity of microorganisms mediating these processes. The present effort has been made to review briefly the effects of pesticides on microorganisms and their activities.

The food plants of world are damaged by more than 10,000 species of insects, 30,000 species of weeds, 1,00,000 diseases (caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms and 1000 species of nematodes (Hall, 1995). The global losses due to various categories of pests vary with the crop, geographic location and weather. Total yield losses from different pests to all the crops have been estimated to be US$ 500 billion worldwide (Oerke et al., 1994). In India, the current losses due to insect pests in principal field crops have been estimated to be Rs. 6, 89,400 million (Dhaliwal et al., 2004). In addition, there is loss of Rs. 60,000 million due to insect pests during storage. Thus, total losses to major crops and food grains in storage caused by insect pests are estimated to be Rs. 750 billion annually (Dhaliwal and Arora, 2006). Among regions, losses in Asia and Africa almost reaches 50 percent whereas in Europe (28.2%), North America (31.2%) and Oceania (36.2%) are below average. Losses due to animal pests in Asia (18.7%) are almost double those in developed countries and losses from weed competition in Africa and Asia are approximately double than those in Europe (Oerke et al., 1994). To combat such heavy losses mostly chemical pesticides are used by the farmers but indiscriminate use of pesticides has led to severe ecological consequences like destruction of natural enemy fauna, effect on non target organisms, residues in consumable products including packed pure and mineral water and ultimately resistance to the pesticides, to which we solely rely. Insecticides are always required to suppress rapidly expanding insect pest populations. Strategies should be employed to increase efficiency and accelerate insect mortality by combining microbials with sub lethal doses of chemical insecticides and botanicals. Biointensive pest management (BIPM) is the recent trend in Indian farming and attracting the farmers for higher income to their produce. This has resulted due to increased awareness among the end users and concerns about the deteriorating ecological situations among the eco-campaigners.

Microbial pesticides consist of disease causing microorganisms, which are disseminated in the pest populations in large quantities in a manner similar to application of chemical pesticides. It includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, nematodes and some protozoans. Pathogens may exert controlling effect by means of their invasive properties, toxins, enzymes and other substances (Lewis, 2006). The use of microbial insecticide has been proved to be a viable alternative to chemical insecticides, especially in management of forest insect pests. The combination of particular active ingredients and their ability of replication in host populations in the fields define the major differences between microbial insecticides and chemical insecticides. These differences have practical implications for their use in insect pest management programmes.

The availability of wide range of pesticides though has been responsible for increasing crop production through regulating arthropod (insect and mite) pest populations in agricultural and horticultural crop production systems but unfortunately, improper and excessive use of pesticides has resulted into a number of potential ecological problems including pest resistance, resurgence, residues in food, feed and fodder, environmental contamination, direct hazards to the users and mainly destruction of beneficial organisms including natural enemies. The most important group of natural enemies is entomophagous insects i.e. insect predators and parasites. Predatory insects are usually much larger than their prey and are generally voracious feeders that kill and eat a wide variety of insects as they grow and reproduce. Many predators are active in both their immature as well as adult stage. Insect parasites/ parasitoids are often tiny, non-stinging wasps. Parasitic wasps are free-living in the adult stage, but in the larval stage are parasitic on specific insects. The parasitic larvae eat their hosts from within, ultimately resulting in the death of the host insect. The compatibility of natural enemies with pesticides is essential as both these management strategies are important part of Integrated Pest Management programs designed to regulate arthropod pest populations and minimize plant damage.

1. INTRODUCTION

Chemical pesticides are designed to control or eliminate pests such as insects, rodents, weeds, bacteria, and fungus. Although pesticides have played a significant role in increasing food production and controlling various diseases in the agriculture system but indiscriminate use of pesticides has resulted in contamination of soil, water bodies’ etc. raising deep concern about food safety and human health. Excessive use of these harmful chemicals affects kidneys, developing fetus, and liver immuno-suppression and increased incidence of breast cancer. Some of these pesticides are also reported as mutagenic. Other health related problems such as impaired memory and concentration, severe depression, headache, etc have also been reported.

Through field survey (Kadian et al., 2010) it has been found that chlorpyrifos is a widely used pesticide in household application as well as in horticulture crop in National capital region Delhi. This tempted us to understand the nature of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and its metabolites and assess the suitability of available techniques for detoxification of contaminated soil.

Plant pathogens are known to cause yield reduction of almost 20 per cent in the principal food and cash crops worldwide (Oorke et al., 1994). These losses may be more severe when highly susceptible cultivars are widely grown in a particular region of the globe. The increased world’s population is posing a major global challenge to provide sufficient quatity of food with high quality fruits and vegetables. Nearly, 570 million US $ is now spent annually on research and development by the leading 15 agricultural Companies to combat with the important diseases of major food, fruits and vegetable crops. There are more than 150 active ingredients registered as fungicides worldwide (Mc Dougal, 1996). In the present era of intensive agriculture, fungicides play an important role in our fight against plant diseases and reduce the losses in yield and quality of farm produce. The global fungicide sale has been estimated to be $ 6.0 billion US. The cereal and vine industries of the Western European have become largest fungicide market followed by North America. However, the fungicide use is not intensive in Asia and the new world.

This article presents the historical development of fungicides, mode of their action, development of resistance to fungicides, fungicidal residue and chemical control of various diseases of horticultural and plantation crops.

India is the world’s second largest producer of fruits, of which mango, banana, citrus, guava, grape, pineapple and apple are the major ones. Apart from these, fruits like papaya, sapota, aonla, phalsa, jackfruit, ber, pomegranate in tropical and sub-tropical parts and peach, pear, almond, walnut, apricot and strawberry in the temperate parts are also grown in a sizeable area. Date palm and fig cultivation is also finding favour in some areas. The major fruit growing states are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Production of fruits in India is 44.04 million tones from an area of 3.72 million hectares. One of the bottlenecks in fruit production is the losses incurred by insect pest and diseases which necessitated the use of pesticides to curb the pest problem. Use of pesticides in India is very low 0.350–0.5 kg/hectare as compared to 7.0 kg/hectare in USA, 2.5 kg/hectare in Europe, 12 kg/hectare in Japan and 6.6 kg/hectare in Korea. Despite of low pesticide consumption in India, there is a great problem of pesticide residues vis-a-vis other countries and these residues have entered into food products and underground water because of non-prescribed use of chemical pesticides, wrong advice and supply of pesticides to farmers by vested interests, non-observance of prescribed waiting period, pre-marketing pesticide treatments during storage and transport, use of sub-standard pesticides, effluents from pesticide manufacturing units, continued use of persistent pesticides for public health programme, lack of awareness and lack of aggressive educational programmes for farmers/consumers.

Spices are defined as “A strongly flavored or aromatic substance of vegetable origin, obtained from tropical plants, commonly used as a condiment”. American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) defines spices as “Any dried plant product used primarily for seasoning purposes”. The word “spice” came from the Latin word “species,” meaning specific kind. The name reflects the fact that all plant parts have been cultivated for their aromatic fragrant, pungent or any other desirable properties including the seed (aniseed, caraway, coriander), leaf (cilantro, kari, bay, mint), berry (allspice, juniper, black pepper), bark (cinnamon), kernel (nutmeg), aril (mace), stem (chives), stalk (lemongrass), rhizome (ginger, turmeric, galangal), root (lovage, horse radish), flower (saffron), bulb (garlic, onion), fruit (star anise, cardamom, chile pepper) and flower bud (clove). Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are leafy, green plant parts used for flavoring purpose. Herbs, such as a basil or orengano, may be used fresh and are commonly chopped in to smaller pieces; spices however are dried and usually ground in to a powder (Anonymous, 2007).

In ancient times, spices were as precious as gold, and as significant as medicines, preservatives and perfumes. India is known as the home of spices and produces a wide variety of spices like black pepper, cardamom (small and large), ginger, garlic, turmeric, chilli and a large variety of tree and seed spices. These have nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive for the purpose of flavoring. They are good not only for our taste buds but also for our health. They have medicinal properties and also used as preservatives. Spices are well known appetizers, digestives and considered essential in culinary art all over the world. Some of them have antioxidant properties, while others possess strong antimicrobial and antibiotic activities. Spices increase the secretion of saliva rich in ptyalin, which facilitates starch digestion in the stomach, rendering the meals, which are rich in carbohydrates, more digestible. They inhibit thrombus formation and accelerate thromobolysis (Anonymous, 2007a).

The noun vegetable means an edible plant or part of a plant, but usually excludes seeds and most sweet fruits. This typically means the leaf, stem, or root of a plant. Vegetables are eaten in a variety of ways, as part of main meals and as snacks. The nutritional content of vegetables varies considerably, though generally they contain little protein or fat (Woodruff,1995 and Whitaker, 2001) and varying proportions of vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin B6, provitamins, dietary minerals and carbohydrates. They contain a great variety of other phytochemicals, some of which have been claimed to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties (Gruda, 2005; Steinmetz and Potter,1996). Some vegetables also contain fiber, important for gastrointestinal function. Some contain important nutrients necessary for healthy hair and skin as well. However, vegetables often also contain toxins and antinutrients such as á-solanine, á-chaconine,(Science direct) enzyme inhibitors (of cholinesterase, protease, amylase, etc.), cyanide and cyanide precursors, oxalic acid, and more (Bad Bug Bock > BBB–Clostridium botulinum). Depending on the concentration, such compounds may reduce the edibility, nutritional value, and health benefits of dietary vegetables. Cooking and/or other processing may be necessary to eliminate or reduce them. Diets containing recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables may help to lower the risk of heart diseases and two type of diabetes. These diets may also protect against some cancers and decrease bone loss. The potassium provided by vegetables may help to prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Need of Analysis Technique

There are various methods to determine the concentration of a substance present in the matrix of an organic matter, these methods are very expensive, require expertise, need skilled man power, expensive chemicals and sophisticated equipments. But the volumetric analysis requires very less equipment and its level of accuracy is fairly high. It is very beneficial in the preparation of normal and molar solutions which is the back bone of all the research. Scientific venture is useless without the preparation of accurate standard solutions which is to be used in the estimation of various substances by sophisticated techniques like colorimetry, spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), inductively coupled plasma emission spectrophotometer (ICP) etc. So the emphasis has been laid on the preparation of quick and accurate preparation of the standards. Volumetric analysis is the simplest technique by which, we can determine the concentration of a substance in solution form by titration of unknown solution against a known concentration solution. One solution is called the standard (known concentration) and other is called unknown solution. In this, reaction takes place either

Chromatography was first employed by Ramsay (1905) to separate mixtures of gases and vapours. The first scientist to recognize chromatography as an efficient method of separation was the Russian botanist Tswett (1906), who demonstrated that, when a plant extract was carried by petroleum ether through a column consisting of a glass tube packed with calcium carbonate powder, a number of dyes were separated, as shown in Figure 1. He named this analysis method “Chromatographie” after “chroma” and “graphos”, which are Greek words meaning “color” and “to draw,” respectively.

Computer played a distinctive role in the growth of most advanced, precise and highly sensitive instruments especially in medical and analytical instrumentation technology. Due to the development of different kinds of software the instrumentation analysis has become easy, rapid and result oriented. Auto sampling, development of new methods for detection analysis and the validity of new developed method have been possible with no trouble. Once the standardization of method is over and saved, it can be applied at any time to integrate the unknown samples and their data calculation. Thus, it avoids repetition in calculation and the end result is time saving technique due to the development of computer-organized system in analysis.

The results produced are more reliable and reproducible through various computer based instruments e.g. scanning machines, blood analyzer, gas chromatography (GC), amino acid analyzer (AAA), atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) etc.

HPLC is a technology or a system that works on the basis of software. There have been many definitions of computer shielded HPLC, such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-speed liquid chromatography (HSLC), high efficiency liquid chromatography (HELC), and simply liquid chromatography (LC).

Nature has bestowed our country with diverse agro climatic and topographic conditions ranging from temperate to humid and from sea bed to snow line. The existing climatic conditions with a plenty of sunshine, nutrient rich soil, abundant water resources and reservoir of trained manpower, enable our country to grow various types of vegetables in tropical, subtropical, temperate, alpine and desert vegetation zones in one or the other seasons during the year.

Vegetables, the cheapest and nutrient-rich food source within the economic reach of poor man, play a vital role in human diet since they provide carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals, vitamins, fibers and phytochemicals (non-nutrient bioactive compounds), which are essential for making the body immune system strong, detoxifying carcinogens, reducing muscular degeneration and protecting the body from infectious ailments. Vegetables besides having medicinal values also play an important role in nutritional security and national economy of the country since they are quick growing and short duration, and their yield per unit area per unit time is 5-10 times higher than the cereal crops.
