Soil Chemistry is the study of chemical composition of soil in relation to crop needs. It deals with the chemical constitution of the soil, the chemical properties and the chemical reactions in soils. Traditional soil chemistry focuses on chemical and biochemical reactions in soils that influence nutrient availability for plant growth, and potential environmental consequences associated with inorganic and organic fertilization. Soil chemistry has increasingly focused on soil genesis and the environment over the past few decades.

Soil Classification

Soil classification deals with the systematic categorization of soils based on distinguishing characteristics as well as criteria that dictate choices in use.

Soil classification is grouping of objects in orderly and logical manner into classes based on the properties of soils (differentiating characters) for the purpose of studying and identifying them. The soil individuals are grouped into classes of the lower category (soil series) which are grouped into classes of higher categories (soil orders). The lower categories are defined by large number of differentiating characters and higher category by a few differentiating characteristics.

For soil resources, experience has shown that a natural system approach to classification, i.e. grouping soils by their intrinsic property (soil morphology), behaviour, or genesis, results in classes that can be interpreted for many diverse uses. Differing concepts of pedogenesis and differences in the significance of morphological features to various land uses can affect the classification approach. Despite these differences, in a well-constructed system, classification criteria group similar concepts so that interpretations do not vary widely. This is in contrast to a technical system approach to soil classification, where soils are grouped according to their fitness for a specific use and their edaphic characteristics.

Classification means the process of ordering or grouping of objects having large number of population and wide variations into shorter one in a systematic manner with selected characteristics. Soils being the natural objects have no exception with other objects to classify them in a best possible way. Thus, soil classification refers to the systematic categorization of soils into various groups, classes or any simpler form based on the similar properties and other distinguishing characteristics. The main purposes of soil classification are to organize knowledge, easy remembering of the soil properties for each group and better understanding about the components and the relationships among individuals and various groups of soils. Various soil classification systems have been evolved during the past for categorizing the soils into various groups but the Soil Taxonomy has been now accepted as most scientific system of classification.

Soil Colloids A colloid, also known as colloidal solution or colloidal system, is a mixture in which finely divided particles (less than 1µm in size) known as dispersed phase are suspended in a medium, called dispersion medium. The particles must be dispersed in a medium and both the dispersed phase and dispersion medium may be solid, liquid or gaseous which leads to numbers of possible colloidal systems. In soil, the clay fraction (< 2µm in size) together with finer fractions of some organic matter forms the composition in a state of colloidal nature, known as soil colloids. The soil solids as dispersed phase predominates in the dispersion medium (soil solution). As such, colloids in a soil are referred to as ‘sol’. Clay colloids display the most reactive fractions of soil governing their distinct properties such as adsorption and exchange of ions, zeta potential, flocculation and other electrokinetic phenomenon.

6.1. What is colloid and colloidal system?

A colloidal particle may be defined as a substance which is microscopically dispersed evenly throughout another phase and is possessing a size of 10^-7 to 10^-3 mm and representing a larger surface area per unit mass. Thus, a colloidal system refers to a two-phase system in which small particles of one phase which might be of solid, liquid or gas is suspended evenly in the second phase of solid, liquid or gaseous material. These colloidal systems may be of solid in liquid or solid in gas or liquid in liquid or liquid in gas. Unique examples of liquid in liquid colloidal system includes the fat droplets dispersed in water of milk. When you put floor disinfectant liquid in water, it forms a white emulsion. Thus, emulsion becomes a colloidal system of liquid in liquid. Likewise, in fog, water droplets are suspended in gaseous air. So, fog is an example of a colloidal system, constituting of liquid dispersed in gas. When we refer smoke, it contains carbon particles (solid) suspended in air (colloidal system of solid and gas). However, smog is composed of smoke and fog. In case of soil colloidal system, soil colloids, which are of tiny particles (<0.001 mm size) and may be of organic and inorganic nature, are suspended in soil solution (water) and referred to as sol. Colloidal chemistry, which involves in the surface reactivity and charge characteristics of colloids, plays a pivotal role in total soil chemistry.

Soil Colloids

A colloidal system is a two-phase heterogenous system in which one material in a very finely divided state is dispersed through the second phase. Solid in liquid (dispersion of clay in water) and liquid in gas (fog or clouds in atmosphere) are examples. The clay fraction of the soil contains particles less than 0.002 mm in size. Particles less than 0.001 mm size possess colloidal properties and are known as soil colloids.

Soil colloidal substances are composed of very fine particles (< 0.002 mm diameter) that undergoes two phase system in a heterogenous manner, where, one phase (disperse phase) is disperse in a fine state of subdivision in another medium called dispersion medium. The soil colloidal properties are affected by the physico-chemical and biological parameters of soils. The availability of plant nutrients are governed mostly by the surface charge characteristics of clay colloids.

5.0 Soil Colloids

Soil colloids being one of the active constituents determine the physical and chemical properties of the soil with the diameter ranging from 1 μm to 2 μm. The origin of the particles may be organic and inorganic constituents.

Soil colour is the most obvious characteristic of soil. It has no direct effect on plant growth; however, it has indirect effect through temperature, moisture. Soil colour can indicate the climatic conditions under which it has developed and can be related to its parent material. It can also reflect upon its age, and the temperature and moisture characteristics of the climate. Thus, cooler regions tend to have grayish to black topsoils, due to the accumulation of humus. In moist warm regions, soils tend to be more yellowish-brown to red. Arid soils tend to be light in color (due to low organic content) and primarily express the color of their mineral content. Practically all colours occur in soils - white, red, brown, gray, yellow, black, etc. Predominantly soil colours are not pure, but mixtures. Frequently two or three colours occur, called as “mottling”.

Soil conservation: it is using and managing land based on the capabilities of land itself, involving the application of the best practices to result in greatest profitable production without damaging the land Principles of soil conservation The aim of soil conservation is to obtain the maximum sustainable level of production from a given area of land whilst maintaining soil loss below a threshold level which theoretically, permits the natural rate of soil formation to keep pace with the rate of soil erosion. In addition, there may be a need to reduce erosion to control the loss of nutrients from agricultural land to prevent pollution of water bodies; to decrease rates of sedimentation in reservoirs, rivers, canals and ditches In the longer term, erosion has to be controlled to prevent land deteriorating in quality until it has to be abandoned and cannot be reclaimed, thereby limiting options for future landuse.

Soil conservation is the practice of preventing soil erosion, degradation, and loss while promoting sustainable land use and agriculture. It is crucial for maintaining the health and productivity of soils, which in turn supports agriculture, ecosystems, and human well-being. Here is a detailed explanation of soil conservation:

1. Erosion Control

Contour Farming: Plowing, planting, and harvesting crops along the contour lines of the land, which reduces water runoff and erosion.

Terracing: Creating level platforms with short, horizontal ridges, which reduce water runoff and erosion on steep slopes.

Windbreaks: Planting trees and shrubs in rows to act as wind barriers, reducing wind erosion.

Cover Crops: Planting cover crops in between main crops to protect the soil from erosion, improve soil structure, and fix nitrogen.

Soil Consistence Defined

Soil consistence is the strength with which soil materials are held together or the resistance of soils to deformation and rupture. Soil consistence is measured for wet, moist and dry soil samples. For wet soils, it is expressed in terms of both stickiness and plasticity. Stickiness is the ability of soil materials to adhere to other objects. Plasticity is the ability of the soil materials to change shape continuously under a constant pressure and to retain the impressed shape when the pressure is removed. Soil consistence may be estimated in the field using simple tests or may be measured more accurately in the laboratory.

Introduction
Soil crusts are surface alterations in the topsoil resulting from natural processes, such as the impact of raindrops followed by drying. These crusts manifest as thin, hardened layers on the soil surface, particularly common in arid and semi-arid regions. Their thickness typically varies from less than 1 mm to 5 cm (Evans and Boul, 1968). Once dry, these layers become denser, harder, and more brittle than the underlying soil, reducing both the number and size of pores and reorganizing the soil’s pore structure. In temperate regions, surface crusts primarily form on unstable loamy soils, particularly in areas under cultivation. In tropical regions, soil crusting affects a broader range of soils and poses a significant problem not only in arid zones but across various climatic conditions. In humid areas, intensive farming exposes the soil surface to high-energy rainfall for extended periods, accelerating the degradation of soil organic matter. As a result, bare soil areas expand, and biomass production declines. From an agronomic perspective, the most critical drawbacks of soil crusting are its negative effects on seedling emergence and water infiltration. Seedling emergence is particularly affected for crops with small seeds or when the timing of emergence is crucial due to climate or market demands. In some instances, costly replanting becomes necessary. The reduction in water infiltration caused by crusted soils creates significant challenges for irrigation, especially in areas where water scarcity limits large-scale use, forcing farmers to adopt more efficient water management strategies. Reduced water infiltration also leads to increased surface runoff, contributing to soil erosion and environmental risks, such as the pollution of surface waters due to nutrient loss. Additionally, restricted gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere further contributes to lower crop yields. Epstein and Grant (1973) observed that soil erodibility is closely linked to the rate and extent of crust formation, with soil loss peaking within the first 10 minutes of rainfall before stabilizing. It is well established that during crustforming rain events, water infiltration declines over time, leading to an increase in runoff volume. In soil culture, also known as in-ground culture, crops are raised on level ground as well as in raised beds. Soil culture is more often used in growing vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and peppers) rather than ornamental crops such as herbs, roses, freesia, and foliage plants as well as popular with smaller commercial and organic growers. The soil should be well drained, fertile, have a medium to light texture and be high in organic matter. The soil in a greenhouse should be worked as deeply as possible to break any existing hardpans or those that may have developed because of repeated traffic over the area. Fumigation or pasteurization of the soil is a must before each crop or at least once a year. This will help to destroy disease, nematodes and weeds. If soil is steamed, hold it at 180 degrees F (82°C) for 4 hours. Production techniques used in soil culture are similar to intensive crop production methods used in the field. Although soil is readily available at most places where a greenhouse is located most commercial growers, no longer rely on soil culture in the greenhouse as they did ealier. Some of the reasons include insect and disease pressures and costly fumigation.

Soil degradation is defined as a decrement in the soil health status resulting in a diminished capacity of the ecosystem to provide goods and services for its beneficiaries. Degraded soils have a deteriorated health status such, that they do not provide the normal goods and services of the particular soil in its ecosystem. Soil degradation is the physical, chemical and biological decline in soil quality.

Soil Density

The density of a soil, as any other matter, is its mass per unit volume. However, in case of soil, because of its unique nature, the density can be expressed by two terms, viz., bulk density and particle density. Soil density is typically expressed in mega gram per cubic metre (Mg m^-3) which is numerically equal to g cm^-3.

Electrical conductivity (EC) is the ability of a material to transmit electrical current. In the soil, the EC is the ability of the soil solution to carry an electrical current and is a measure of the total amount of soluble salts present in the soil. Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity and increases in soluble salts water result in proportional increases in the conductivity.

23.1. Sources of Soluble Salts in Soil

The soluble salts in soils consist mostly of the cations sodium, calcium, and magnesium and the anions chloride and sulfate. Constituents that ordinarily occur only in minor amounts are the cation potassium and the anions bicarbonate, carbonate, and nitrate. The original and, to some extent, the direct source of all the salt constituents are the primary minerals found in soils and in the exposed rocks of the earth’s crust.

While the mean chlorine and sulfur content of the earth’s crust is 0.05 and 0.06 percent, respectively, sodium, calcium, and magnesium each occur in the range of 2 or 3 percent. During the process of chemical weathering, which involves hydrolysis, hydration, solution, oxidation, and carbonation, these constituents are gradually released and made soluble. When carbon-di-oxide, of atmospheric or biological origin, dissolves in water, bicarbonate ions are formed. Water containing carbon-di-oxide is an active chemical weathering agent that releases appreciable quantities of the cation constituents as the bicarbonates. The concentrations of carbonate and bicarbonate ions are a function of the pH of the solution. Appreciable amounts of carbonate ions can be present only at pH values of 9.5 or higher.

Soil fertility depends on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. Among the biological properties, soil enzymes are used as an index of soil fertility. Soil enzymes respond to changes in soil management faster in comparison to other soil variables, and also catalyze the reactions necessary for the life processes of microorganisms in soils. The biochemical reactions are brought about by the catalytic action of enzymes. Soil enzymes include amylase, phosphatase, urease, cellulase, protease, glycosidase, and arylsulfatase. They play a role in organic material decomposition, the transformation of organic matter, nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation, detoxification of pesticides, xenobiotics, etc., and thus regulate the ecosystem.

Depending on their location, enzymes can be extracellular or intracellular. Intracellular enzymes are found in the cell’s cytoplasm or bound to the cell walls of living and metabolically active cells. Extracellular enzymes released into the soil and are “permanently” immobilized on clay and humic colloids via ionic interactions, covalent bonds, hydrogen bonding, entrapment, and other mechanisms. There are two kinds of soil enzymes.

Among the various natural resources upon which all living organisms depend, soil is the unique because of its non-renewable in nature, heterogeneity in space and time and susceptibility to degradation inflicted by biotic as well as abiotic agents. Whereas, escalating population demands, in one way, to bring more land under the plough for providing food, fodder, fuel and fibre, simultaneously, on the other way, these finite natural resources are dwindling by leaps and bound, through overexploitations and mismanagement, the combined effect of which leads to land degradation, a serious global threat and major environmental issues in the present times.

Overview of Soil Erosion Conservation Measures

Definition

Soil erosion is the process of detachment of soil particles from the top soil and transportation of the detached soil particles by wind and / or water. The agents causing erosion are wind and water. The detaching agents are falling raindrop, channel flow and wind. The transporting agents are flowing water, rain splash and wind.

Erosion is the process by which soil and rock are removed from the Earth’s surface by exogenic processes such as wind or water flow, and then transported and deposited in other locations.

While erosion is a natural process, human activities have increased by 10-40 times the rate at which erosion is occurring globally. Excessive erosion causes problems such as desertification, decreases in agricultural productivity due to land degradation, sedimentation of waterways, and ecological collapse due to loss of the nutrient rich upper soil layers. Water and wind erosion are now the two primary causes of land degradation; combined, they are responsible for 84% of degraded acreage, making excessive erosion one of the most significant global environmental problems.

Industrial agriculture, deforestation, roads, anthropogenic climate change and urban sprawl are amongst the most significant human activities in regard to their effect on stimulating erosion. However, there are many prevention and remediation practices that can curtail or limit erosion of denuded soils.

Introduction
Soil, the outermost layer of the Earth’s crust, plays a vital role in supporting plant life. It consists of a mixture of mineral and organic materials, with its depth varying from negligible to several meters across different regions. Subjected to continuous atmospheric influences, soil experiences erosion, primarily driven by the movement of wind and water. Erosion, originating from the Latin word “erodere,” meaning “to eat away” or “to excavate,” involves the detachment, transportation, and deposition of soil particles. The erosion process encompasses two main phases: the detachment of individual soil particles from the soil mass and their subsequent transportation by various agents such as water, wind, ice, or gravity, followed by eventual deposition. Finer soil particles are more susceptible to erosion compared to coarser ones, leading to the formation of sediment, the ultimate product of soil erosion. Sediment, which refers to fragmented material transported or deposited by natural agents, illustrates the sedimentation process, reflecting the sequence of the sediment cycle. Detachment involves the dislodgment of soil particles from the soil mass by erosive agents such as impacting raindrops and runoff water. Transportation entails the entrainment and movement of these detached soil particles (sediment) from their original location, often through stream systems, towards eventual deposition sites, which may include the base of slopes, reservoirs, or floodplains. Soil erosion presents a significant threat to human well-being by diminishing the productivity of agricultural land through the removal and washing away of essential plant nutrients and organic matter. The widespread distribution of sediment load globally underscores the pervasive impact of erosion on natural landscapes and ecosystems.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR PLANT GROWTH

Arnon (1954) set three criteria to state an element is essential to plants. They are:

1. The plant must be unable to grow normally or complete its life cycle in the absence of the element,
2. The element is specific and cannot be replaced by another and,
3. The element plays a direct role in metabolism.

Accordingly there are 16 elements essential for plant growth. They are carbon, hydrogen and oxygen called primary nutrients, calcium, magnesium and sulphur called secondary nutrients; iron, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, chlorine and molybdenum are known as micronutrients.

Soil fertility is the ability of the soil to supply all the essential nutrients in optimum amount in balanced proportion in a form readily available to plants under conditions favourable for plant growth and should be free from toxic substances.

Soil productivity: Soil productivity is defined as the capability of soil for producing a specified crop or sequence of crops under defined set of management practices. It is measured in terms of outputs or harvests in relation to the inputs of production factors for specific kinds of soils under a physically defined system of management according to USDA (1957).

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Jhunjhunun district of Indian Thar desert to evaluate the soil fertility status and impact of different land uses on soil physico-chemical properties. Surface soil samples (0-30 cm depth) from rainfed crop lands, irrigated croplands, Orans (traditional grazing lands) and sand dunes were collected and analyzed for fertility. The pH and EC values of the soils ranged from 7.2- 9.7 and 0.02 – 2.5 dSm,^-1 respectively. The soil organic carbon (SOC) content in the soils varied from 0.03-0.62%, with the lowest average content (0.07%) in sand dunes, whereas average SOC under rainfed crop lands and Orans was 0.13 and 0.15%, respectively. Soils under irrigated crop lands recorded highest values for SOC (0.22%). Phosphorus deficiency was spread in the district across the land uses. However, soils under irrigated crop land showed phosphorus buildup due to carry over effect of continuous use of P fertilizers over a period of time.

The active management of soil nutrients to ensure optimal plant nutrition has been a fundamental practice in agriculture since its inception. For centuries, production of agriculture depended on the organic materials recycling like manure and crop residues. Interest in plant nutrition dates back to ancient times, first captivating philosophers and later becoming a subject of rigorous scientific inquiry. The history of how plants obtain nutrients is marked by numerous misconceptions and incorrect theories. Exploring the long-standing efforts to uncover this essential agricultural process highlights the perseverance and brilliance of early thinkers and scientists. It also underscores that modern understanding, which may now seem straightforward, is the culmination of significant scientific endeavour. The concept of managing fertility of soil to boost yield of crops is far from new—its origins are intertwined with the earliest practices of agriculture. Ancient civilizations recognized the value of applying organic matter such as green manure, farmyard manure, night soil, bone, and wood ashes to enhance soil productivity.

Introduction

In India, hot arid ecosystem covering an area of 31.7 million ha lies at north western part of the country and 62% of this area falls in western Rajasthan covering 12 districts i.e. Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Hanumangarh, Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Barmer, Pali and Sirohi. The major landforms in arid western Rajasthan are dune and inter-dune plains having sandy to sandy-loam textured soils. Temperature remains high for most part of the year reaching up to 42-45°C during prolonged summer months (April to July), whereas annual rainfall is very low and highly sporadic (100-400 mm) mainly occurs during August and September. Annual potential evapotranspiration ranges from 1500-2000 mm. Loss of fertile top soil from denuded soil surface through wind erosion is frequent during summer months. The region is subjected to frequent occurrence of droughts, once in every three years, which further intensifies the process of desertification (Samra et al. 2006). Shorter growing period, sandy soils, very low available water capacity, inadequate nitrogen and phosphorus availability are the major constraints. Soils are prone to severe wind erosion, terrain deformation and nutrient depletion. The region is mostly mono cropped and double cropping is being practiced extensively in canal and tubes well command area. Extensive fallowing in the past even in very good rainfall years because of uneven undulating topography and severe windstorm are the cause of concern. Ground water is deep and is usually brackish, declining at alarming rate due to excessive withdrawal for irrigation and other purposes. The region, however, sustains on perennial vegetation of Prosopis cineraria, Tecomella undulata, arid shrubs and grasses, which are rich resources of fodder for animal because cropping is affected by vagaries of monsoon. During last two to three decades, a 2 to 3-fold increase in irrigated areas with cultivation of both kharif and rabi crops has been recorded and most of these increments are resulted through conversions from rainfed areas, grazing lands and sand dunes into irrigated areas.

Understanding the impacts of organic or inorganic nutrient management on soil biology and biochemistry may help to develop more sustainable fertilization strategies. The results from comprehensive study made on a field experiment comparing the long-term (more than 100 years) effects of organic manures and inorganic chemical fertilizers on soil biological and biochemical properties are reviewed. The soils adopted with three nutrient managements viz., no fertilization (control), inorganic chemical fertilizers (IC) and organic amendments (OM) obtained from long-term fertilizer experiment were assessed for physical, chemical, microbiological and biochemical properties in three successive years. The response of most of the assessed soil variables to long-term organic nutrient management was significantly higher than those from inorganic fertilization and control (OM > IC = control).

Ideal plant health and productivity of a cropping system depends on an adequate amount of plant nutrients. Fertility of the soil refers to its capacity to support the production of crops. A productive fertile soil can support optimal plant growth, seed germination to plant maturity by providing adequate soil volume for plant root development, essential plant nutrients to meet the nutritional requirements of the plants, and encourage for the consequent plant structure. These attributes of the soil can be distinguished as inherent or dynamic soil quality indicators.Optimum plant health and productivity of a cropping system depends on an adequate supply of plant nutrients. The quantity of nutrients required by plants varies depending on many interacting factors including:

• Agronomic effects

• Soil properties

• Climatic condition

• Management practices

Soil fertility is the resultant of several factors, not the least important of which is the soil itself. Theoretically, the soil only plays the part of a support and could be very easily dispensed with and replaced by sand and even that can be replaced by a wire framework to support the plant mechanically and it will grow quite well if the right amount of nutrient materials have been added to water. ‘Where does the soil come in?” you will ask. The importance of the soil is two-fold: (1) It provides vast reserves of plant food which is slowly made available. (2) It provides limiting factors which restrict plant growth; these limiting factors must be neutralized. We have already discussed these reserve food materials and limiting factors in Chapter II.

It has been shown that if we treat a soil with dilute acid exhaustively we can remove everything from it except the mineral framework. If we try to grow anything in this mineral framework nothing will grow. Yet it is not like sand, for whereas in sand by adding appropriate amounts of nutrient materials in water solution you could grow a crop, nothing will grow if you added the same solution of nutrient materials to the soil. This mineral framework, therefore, is not inert like sand, but it is active and can react with the nutrient salts in such a way that either they are rendered unavailable or something else which is toxic is produced by the interaction between the soil and the nutrient salts. This mineral framework is not acted upon by dilute acids, but it reacts with alkalies in such a way that the alkalies are neutralized. In this respect, therefore, the mineral frame work behaves like an acid. With alkalies it forms salts and different alkalies are required in equivalent amounts for the formation of these salts. Thus we can have salts of a number of bases and if we use sodium hydroxide for neutralizing we shall have sodium soil, similarly we can have a calcium, magnesium or potassium soil. Now in nature, all the various bases principally, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, are associated with it in different proportions. The nature and amount of these bases determines the physico-chemical properties of the soil affecting crop yield and leading to soil infertility. We have already indicated the method of bringing the soiil to the normal state when it suffers from any of the defects associated with the soil framework.

Although the application of fertilizer to even fairly fertile soils can give a great increase in crop yield, soil fertility is not simply a matter of nutrient content. It is dependent on a number of complex of issues:

Soil depth

The volume of soil from which the crop draws its nutrition varies according to the rooting depth of the crop. However hard or rocky layers can restrict natural root development; this is particularly the case with micro irrigation systems.

Soil structure

Particle size and soil aggregate size and distribution, effect the size and distribution of pores and therefore the availability of air and water to the roots.

Soil fertility is defined as the quality that enables the soil to provide proper nutrient compounds in proper amounts and in proper balance for the growth of specified plants. Soil fertility is also defined as the ability of soil to supply adequately the nutrients normally taken from the soil by plants.

ACID-FORMING FERTILIZER: A term applied to commercial fertilizers which leave an acid residue in the soil. The amount of calcium carbonate required to neutralize the acid residue is referred to its equivalent acidity.

Pedology:- Pedology word drive from Greek word pedon, means soil or earth and logos means to study. Pedology is concerned with origin of the soil, its classification, distribution and character (Physical, Chemical and Biological).

Definition:- Soils are natural bodies made from both mineral and organic materials and capable of supporting plants out-of-doors.

Soil formation is a long term process. It takes several million years to form a thin layer of soil. The soil is made up of broken down rock material of varying degree of fineness and changed in varying degrees from the parent rocks by the action of different agencies such that the growth of vegetation is made possible. As soil is a complex mixture of various components, its formation is also more complex. The Formation of a particular type of soil depends upon the physico-chemical properties of the parent rock, intensity and duration of weathering, climatic and other parameters.

Soil formation takes place in two consecutive stages:

1. The weathering of rocks into regolith

2. The formation of true soil from regolith

The evolution of true soil from regolith takes place by the combined action of soil forming factors and processes. The first step is accomplished by weathering (disintegration and decomposition) and the second is associated with the action of soil forming factors which are known as pedogenic factors.

The pedogenic processes are dynamic and extremely complex involving several chemical and biological reactions, usually operating simultaneously in a given area. One process may counteract another, or two different processes may work in tandem to achieve the same result. Different processes or combination of processes operate under varying natural environments.
