Introduction

The microorganisms exist as single cell or cluster of cells capable of orderly growth, metabolism and reproduction in two identical daughter cells. These includes cellular organisms {protozoa, algae and fungi (Eukaryotes), bacteria and archaea (Prokaryotes)} and viruses (non cellular entities). The study of microorganisms contribute to understanding of :

1. Basic biological sciences - It acts as a tool for providing the basic information for life processes. The discovery of DNA, RNA, proteins and enzyme functions all came from microbial study.
2. Applied biological sciences - Medicine, agriculture, industry, plant and animal pathology, immunology, plant and animal nutrition, biotechnology all have origin from the understanding of the cell function and metabolism of microorganisms.

13.1 Introduction

In the previous chapters, we have considered different tests of significance based on normal distribution, F distribution, student’s t distribution and Chi-square (x²) distribution which are frequently applied by the users of different disciplines of applied sciences and social sciences. In this chapter some more tests of significance are considered which have not been covered in those chapters. These tests are also based on t, F, Fisher’s z transformation,  and some other test statistics are also discussed one by one in the following sections.

13.2 t Test for Testing the Significance of an Observed Sample Correlation Coefficient r ^xy

Let r be the observed sample correlation coefficient based on a small sample of size n drawn from a bi-variate normal population with population correlation coefficient r. The standard error of r is given as

Vegetables are grown on a limited scale in homesteads for family use and cultivated in an extensive scale for marketing. Depending on the purpose for which they are developed, vegetables gardens are classified into different types, viz., kitchen garden or nutrition garden, market garden, truck garden, garden for processing, garden for seed production and vegetable forcing or protected cultivation.

1. Kitchen garden or nutrition garden

Kitchen garden or home garden or nutrition garden is primarily intended for continuous supply of fresh vegetables for family use. A number of vegetables are grown in available land for getting a variety of vegetables. Most of works are done by family members. Area of garden, lay out, crops selected etc. depend on availability and nature of land. In rural area, land will not be a limiting factor and scientifically laid out garden can be established. In urban areas, land is a limiting factor and very often crops are raised in limited available area or in terraces of buildings. Cultivation of crops in pots or in cement bags is also feasible in cities.

The unique advantages of a kitchen garden or home garden are:

(i) Supply fresh fruits and vegetables high in nutritive value

Agriculture is not only the main source of employment, income and food for over 70% of the population but also the main culture of the rural families. But the linear growth in population and unplanned colonization lead to rapid fragmentation of land holdings and shrinkage in fertile cultivated land. In India, more than 70% of the total population of the country still live in villages and mainly depend on agriculture and/or related enterprises. Marginal and small farmers constitute more than 84% of the 115 million operational holdings in India which are cultivating only 29% of the arable land (Singh et al., 2011). 

Water is indispensable for human, animal and plant life. It is a major component of all organisms some of which contain more than 90% of water. Water is a constituent of protoplasm. It maintains turgidity of cells which is essential for stomatal opening, expansion of cells and for different physiological processes. Water is also required for translocation of nutrients and dissipation of heat.

16.1 Irrigation

Irrigation is generally defined as the artificial application of water to soil for the purpose of supplying the moisture essential for plant growth.

However, a broader and more inclusive definition of the term irrigation is the application of water to the soil for any number of the following six purposes —

1. To add water to soil to supply the moisture essential for plant growth.
2. To provide crop insurance against short duration drought.
3. To cool the soil and atmosphere, thereby making more favourable environment for crop growth.
4. To wash out or dilute salts in the soil.

With the current food production level of 275.11 million tonnes, India has to step up food grain production by next decade to feed the burgeoning population (Report Ministry of Agriculture). India with 2.3% of the global geographical area, supports about 16.8% human population, 20% of the world’s livestock. However, per capita availability of land for producing agricultural commodities has declined from 0.34 ha in 1951 to about 0.23 ha in 1980 and 0.15 ha in 0.15 ha during 2015 and it is expected to decline further to about 0.09 ha by 2050 A.D. With the possibility of horizontal expansion or putting more land under cultivation being remote, further augmentation in yield in Indian agriculture will be forced more and more into marginal or problematic soils accompany about 57% geographical area with increasing competition for good quality lands.

Resource management has become a formidable task with loss of cultivable land to urbanization. Coercion to increase production has resulted in adoption of intense farming. This, however, has resulted in significant increase in the pest problem. Despite ten-fold increase in insecticide use during the last 80 years, losses inflicted by pests have nearly doubled. Estimates of yield losses caused by various pests attack range from 10-35% in various crops during different seasons which account for about 2000 crore revenue loss to the horticulture industry and is further projected at 5000 crore or more in future due to changing climate and intense farming (Reddy, 2010 and Rather, et al, 2013).

Eastern India comprises of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam plains, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh with a total geographical area (GA) of 71.84 million ha with highest in Odisha (15.57 million ha) and lowest in Assam (7.84 million ha) (Bhatt et al., 2016). Net cultivated area in the region is 31.21 million ha (about 44% of GA) with a cropping intensity of 150%. The total food grain production from the region is 86.71 million tonnes (31.51% of the total production). Eastern region is having population of 406 million (33.6 % of total) with the density of 567 person/sq km, which is much higher than national density i.e., 382. 

Background: Indian Agriculture

The share of agriculture in GDP of India has increased from 17.8% in 2019-20 to 19.9% in 2020-21 (Economic Survey, 2020-21). According to fourth advanced estimate, the food grain production in the country in 2019-20 was 296.65 million tonnes. In spite of lower contribution to GDP than industries and services sector, a trend that is expected in the development process of any economy, agriculture yet forms the backbone of development. An average Indian still spends almost half of his/her total expenditure on food, while roughly half of India’s work force is still engaged in agriculture for its livelihood. While agriculture’s share in India’s economy has progressively declined due to the high growth rates of the industrial and services sectors, the sector’s importance in India’s economic and social fabric goes well beyond this indicator. First, nearly three-quarters of India’s families depend on rural incomes. 

• Agriculture - 26% GDP, Processed food industry - 6.3% GDP.
  1. Simple fruits: Fruits which develop from a single ovary of a single flower e.g., Lemons, citrus, peach, apple, pear etc.
  2. Aggregate fruits: Fruits which develop from many ovaries of a single flower e.g., Raspberry, strawberry, blackberries.

• Pre harvests spray of calcium and brown on fruits and results in improving firmness.
• Worldwide postharvest fruits and vegetable losses are as high as 25-40.

• Mature sperm cells are undifferentiated cells which are the testicular product as well as indicators of testicular spermatogenic function. A spermiogram reflects the testicular activity and fertility status of a male animal. • Disease conditions, age, stress factors, vaccination or any altered physiological conditions may affect the seminal quality. Objectives of Semen Evaluation • To provide essential information about the fertility status of the male animal, though the fertilizing capacity of the animal cannot be completely defined by these tests. • To diagnose various pathological conditions of testes and male genitalia. • To determine the eligibility for further processing of semen cryopreservation • To determine the potential of semen for AI purposes

1. Introduction Millets, including foxtail millet (Setaria italica), are gaining popularity as “smart foods” due to their numerous benefits for the planet, consumers, and farmers (Anitha et al., 2021). Foxtail millet, classified as a major millet, belongs to the genus Setaria in the Poaceae family. It has a rich history, with archaeological remains dating back 7400-7935 years in northern China and cultivation in Europe around 4000 years ago (Lu et al., 2009). Foxtail millet is currently cultivated in 26 countries and stands as the secondhighest cultivated millet globally. It is a relatively short plant, growing up to 2-5 feet tall, and demonstrates high resistance to various stresses, both biotic and abiotic(Sharma and Niranjan, 2018). The crop’s short generation cycle of 5-8 weeks from planting to flowering, followed by 8-15 weeks to attain seed maturity, allows for harvesting within 75-90 days after plantation. Foxtail millet produces hundreds of seeds per inflorescence (Li et al., 2020).

Soil survey is essentially a systematic examination of morphological, a set of other variable soil characteristics, description, classification and mapping of soil in an area alongwith a report making an interpretation to predict their potentials for various uses particularly for crop production.

Activities of Soil Survey Soil survey is composed of the following activities –

1. Anticipation of soil variability - The initial activity of soil survey is obtained by classifying the surveyed data according to different land forms and existing land uses either through field traversing, or aerial photo or by satellite images of the concerned area.

2. Characterisation and classification – This is done on the basis of soil profile description supported with soil analytical data.

3. Soil mapping - This is performed by showing the distribution of types of soil or soil mapping units based on already classified soils with their landforms, and land uses or their combinations.

4. Interpretation - It is the process of making prediction about the potentials of soils for various uses like choice of farm practices – agriculture, horticulture, forestry, pastures etc. and their management practices.

Micronutrients are those elements essential for green plants but required in very small quantity for their growth and development. There are altogether eight micronutrient elements in soil consisting of iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, molybdenum and chlorine with the recent addition of nickel. These together with large number of other elements usually present in plants with small concentrations are formed as trace elements. Another element, cobalt is known to be required for microorganisms concerned mainly with nitrogen fixation in legumes affects indirectly the growth of many higher plants, thus, may be considered to be included in the list of essential micronutrient element. Similarly, Vanadium and sodium although present as beneficiary elements for plant growth may also have the possibilities to be enlisted into this group of elements.

The world’s drylands include hyper-arid, arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas where rainfall is highly scanty and variable. Droughts are common in areas / zones where water is the principal limiting factor for agriculture (https:// www.fao.org/3/t0122e/t0122e03.htm) . Dryland soils are characterized by low levels of moisture, organic matter, and biological activity, consequently such soils are very poor in fertility devoid of plant nutrients. When, these soils suffer further degradation in fertility, resulting in erosion, desertification, and salinization when crops are grown on such soils inappropriately without any scientific basis. However, the major factor limiting agricultural production on drylands is the lack of adequate moisture for crop growth or drought.

1 Analysis of Chemical Composition of Milk

 1.1 Determination of Acidity of Milk

 Introduction

The acidity of milk can be determined by titrating the milk against standard sodium hydroxide solution using an indicator like phenolphthalein and is expressed in the terms of lactic acid. Though natural acidity in milk is due to its constituents such as casein, albumin, citrates, phosphates and carbon dioxide but it is customary to express in terms of lactic acid. As one gram equivalent weight of an alkali neutralizes one gram equivalent weight of an acid, the volume of standard alkali required to neutralize lactic acid of fixed volume of milk gives percent acidity of milk according to the reaction.

1 Analysis of Cream

 Sample Preparation

Warm the cream sample to 40 - 50oC if the sample is very viscous. Then pour from one vessel to another 3 to 4 times to mix well. Sample should be tested daily and always within three days after collection since enzymatic deterioration of the cream will cause low tests.

1.1 Determination of Fat Content in Cream

 1.1.1 Gerber Method

 Introduction

Sulphuric acid is added to cream in order to dissolve the protein and other solids and create heat which liquefy and de-emulsify the fat. Iso-amyl alcohol is added to aid the separation of fat. Upon centrifugation, fat being lighter will be separated on top of solution in the cream butyrometer.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Electrocardiogram is a graphic record of electrical events of the heart recorded by the electrocardiograph. It represents the sum up surface voltage and direction of electrical activity produced during cardiac muscle depolarization and repolarization plotted against time (Fig. 33). The time is represented on the X- axis (horizontal line) and amplitude of voltage is represented on the Y-axis (vertical line) of the graph. The potential difference occurring over the surface of the body (at different lead placement locations) is associated with depolarization and repolarization of heart muscle (myocardium). The amplitude of the potential difference is measured as milli volt (mV) and their duration is measured in second or milliseconds.

Introduction

Water pollution is a significant issue that damages the quality of aquatic ecosystem. The pollution of water bodies is caused by several point and non point sources. Among them, wastewater released from livestock farms poses a potent risk for environmental pollution accelerating disease load and premature deaths (Vaishnav et al. 2023). Numerous small and large scale livestock farms are being operated around world to compensate the increased food demand from about 200 kcal per person per day in 2000 to about 400 kcal per person per day in 2050, South Asia's food demand for livestock products is expected to almost double (Thornton, 2010). Significant dietary changes toward animal based foods accelerates the livestock production (Springmann et al. 2016).

Endocrine glands secrete their products into the bloodstream and body tissues in conjunction with the central nervous system to control and regulate a variety of body functions (Fig. 26.1). Gravimetric moisture analysis, being the foundation of soil water assessment, allows for a meticulous examination of the water content in the soil. The process involves obtaining a representative soil sample, subjecting it to controlled drying conditions, and determining the weight loss after moisture removal. This method not only quantifies the total water content but also helps in understanding the soil’s water-holding capacity and drainage characteristics. Gravimetric analysis is indispensable in precision agriculture, aiding farmers in optimizing irrigation schedules and preventing overwatering or underhydration.

Introduction

Since ancient times, addition of chemicals to food and food products has been done in order to to accomplish specific functions. Spices, smoke, vinegar, and alcohol were utilised to preserve foods more than 10,000 years ago. Usage of additives in food increased dramatically in the early 1900s, in tandem with advances in food chemistry and preservation. New, tasty, convenient, and healthy meals continue to be in high demand. As a result, by the early 1960s, over 2500 different types of additives were identified and utilized by developing countries in their diets. Basic foods are additive free, but as we increase the level of processing for conversion into an array of products, variety of additives are incorporated to increase the shelf life; to retain the nutritional value as well as to achieve higher standard of sensorial characteristics.

Introduction

Cocoa beans are extracted from the pod of a tree crop Theobroma cacao. It is mainly cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries. In terms of world production, Ivory Coast and Ghana contribute about 65 percent of world production. Cocoa beans are the main ingredient in chocolate. (Teye, E et al 2014). One of the earliest examples of chocolate consumption comes from the Mayans. The Maya drink was prepared with cocoa and water and often included cinnamon and black pepper. It was also known as the “Food of the Gods” and offered to Emperor Moctezuma II by the Aztecs, (Verna, R. 2013). Christopher Columbus was the first European to encounter cocoa in 1502.

2.1. Concept of review of literature

Research is a continuous process. For any scientific investigation, previous f indings provide basis to the research. It also helps to know the previous research work done in that area and acts as a torch for the new researchers. The review of literature is one of the important aspects in the research process. It helps the researcher to keep his work going in right and appropriate direction. To point out prior research in the area of interest and how our findings connect to past studies, a review of the literature is conducted. The proposed study is new in its subject treatment. However, an attempt is made here to put together some of the closely related research findings in the area.

Introduction

Research setting is basically a functional social ecology along with research objectives and condition wherein all possible socio-economic and communication processes are generated, and again gets regenerated. The researcher seeks to throw a spotlight on the implications and behavioral patterns of people who reside in the subject region and who are usual of the greater community. In this chapter, an in-depth review of the socio-demographic background of the local population in a rural setting has been provided.

4.1. Area of the study

The present research study was taken up in two states, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

1.1. Introduction: India’s present population, growth rate & projections

India is the second-most populous country in the world after China with its population of about 1.38 billion in the year 2020. The Population Division under the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, of the United Nations, has projected the country’s population to be growing to about 1.50 billion by the year 2030, and 1.64 billion by 2050, of course with its decreasing annual growth rate from 1.04 to 0.25% or so during the period of next thirty years (Fig. 1.1; UNDESA, 2019). The projection says the Indian population will exceed China by the year 2030 even with its decreasing rate i.e. India will be the most populous country by then. As agriculture and allied sectors are the backbone of this country and the largest livelihood source, it support this growing human and livestock population with diversified natural resources and varied agro-climatic conditions. However, the sustainability of agricultural production should be maintained in the face of perturbation and stress on the agro-ecosystem especially the degraded natural resource base and changing climate.

Food Business Regulatory System in India

In India Food Businesses are regulated by only One authority i.e. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This comes under the control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Govt. of India.

FSSAI – Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

The FSSAI or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was incorporated under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) of 2006. It consolidated various acts & orders that were previously applicable and used to handle food related issues in different Ministries and Departments. The basic objective of formulating FSSAI has been to lay down science-based standards for items of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, sale, distribution, and import to ensure the availability of adulteration-free and wholesome food for human consumption.

A canal of more than 80 cumecs (3000 cusecs) approximetly may be called as a high capacity canal.

It has already been pointed out in chapter 1, that for the best section of any shape, R is always equal to d/2 only, and such depth is the most optimum depth. But such channels are not always practical or most economical due to many other practical reasons, (see para 4.1 and 6.3) and many times shallower depth then this depth is adopted. Typical examples are lining of existing earthen channels, given in para 6.3.

All the best sections have fixed ratio of dimensions very near to the semi circle. For large discharges, radius of semi circle increases that, means depth of canal as well as velocity increases. But higher velocity is not permissible with every type of lining (see table 2.1 and para 2.3). Similarly depth also has limitation of construction, maintenance, stability of slopes, etc. see example–4.2.

Because of limiting velocities and depth, deeper canal section are not practically feasible/possible. Therefore for large discharges, say more than 100 cumecs, Mehboob or best trapizodal sections are just not possible/practical, and recourse has to be taken to trapezoidal section with increased bed width then depth. This section is hydraulically inefficient or uneconomical. Larger the B/D ratio, larger is the inefficiency and section is more costly. (For Mehboob Section, B:D ratio is zero and for best trapizodal section it is much less than 1, see para 3.1, table 3.1 para 3.5 and table 3.4).

1.1 Introduction

The state of Uttarakhand was formed in November 2000. At the state level, it is the Department of Women’s Empowerment and Child Development that has overall responsibility for formulating and implementing schemes relating to Women’s Empowerment. As the nodal agency, the responsibility for preparing the Women’s Policy was given by the Government of Uttarakhand to Department of Women’s Empowerment and Child Development. Presently the Government of Uttarakhand is running various schemes/programmes through the different departments of the Government to bring about women’s development and their empowerment. For lack of an overarching policy that would have provided a common understanding and a unified vision, each department has defined and operationalized empowerment through its own prism and from its own perspective and understanding. In the case of some departments, the stated goal is not to bring about women’s empowerment, but rather, the emphasis is on bringing about their overall efficiency and economic development.

Introduction

Aquaculture is given major thrust in many countries including India not only as a source of good quality food of animal origin but also because of economic gains it brings to aqua-farmers, creation of employment and export trade. It has emerged as one of the fastest growing food producing sector sowing to intensification and diversification of culture systems. However, the success of the intensive aquaculture system depends on several factors including species cultured, type of feed, water quality, management practices and strategies adopted to prevent/ control disease problems. Further, the intensive aquaculture operation results in accumulation of wastes leading to water quality deterioration, oxygen depletion, build-up of toxic metabolites such as hydrogen sulphide, methane, ammonia and nitrites that cause stress to culture animals leading to susceptibility to diseases. Among the several challenges that seriously affect the growth and sustainability of aquaculture, the incidence of microbial diseases are considered as major threat. Thus, keeping cultured aquatic animals in good health becomes major requirement for the success of aquaculture.

Though application of chemicals and drugs are often considered necessary to maintain water quality and animal health, use of these, in the long run are known to cause harmful effects both to the animal and the environment. Further, accumulation of drugs and chemicals in tissues, development of resistance to drugs by pathogens, pathogen build up, destruction of useful microorganisms, deterioration of pond environment and toxicity issues have limited their use in aquaculture system. Under these circumstances several alternative strategies have been proposed as viable option for the success of aquaculture in the form of prophylactic measuressuch as use of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, immunostimulants and bacterial vaccines. The term prophylaxis refers to all preventive steps taken including better aquaculture management practices that are adopted during a hatchery and farming operation to improve growth, minimize the load of pathogens and prevent occurrence of diseases.

Introduction: N metabolism

Nitrogen is one of the three essential macronutrients for plant growth and yield (Su et al., 2005) and most crucial elements for root growth also (Fageria, 2014). Most macromolecules and a variety of secondary and signalling substances, such as proteins, nucleic acids, cell wall components, hormones, and vitamins, contain nitrogen (N), an important element. In order to assimilate nitrogen, nitrate must be reduced to ammonium, and then ammonium must be converted into amino acids. Perez et al. (1973) pointed out that the rice genotype with high protein yield translocated N from leaf blade to the developing grains more efficiently than the low protein genotype. This was reported due to a high concentration of free amino acids in the sap translocated to the developing grains rather than to differences in translocation rates. Therefore, proper understanding of N metabolism and amino acid translocation are prerequisite to comprehend higher grain protein in high yielding rice genotypes. Use of N by plants involves several steps including uptake, assimilation, translocation and remobilization; and recycling and remobilization when the plant is ageing (Fig. 1). The enzyme nitrate reductase (NR) assimilates nitrate, the main form of nitrogen available to agricultural plants in the field. This enzyme and the nitrogen status of various higher plant systems have a strong positive link, and growth, yield, or protein content can occasionally be connected to this enzyme’s level in seeds or leaves. Nitrate intake occurs at the root level, and it has been demonstrated that plants have two nitrate transport systems that work together to cohabit, absorb, and distribute nitrate from the soil solution throughout the entire plant. (Srivastava 1980) Following NO3- uptake by NO3- transporters and reduction of NO3- to NO2- by nitrate reductase (NR) in the cytoplasm, the process of NO3- assimilation commences (Lea and Miflin, 1974).

• The name Zoraptera, derived from the Greek “zor” meaning pure and “aptera” meaning wingless was given to the order before winged forms were discopvered.

• Members of the order Zoraptera are small (less than 4 mm) and usually found in rotting wood, under bark or in piles of old sawdust.

• They live in small aggregations (gregarious) and appear to scavenge on spores and mycelium of fungi, or occasionally, on mites and other small arthropods.

• The green revolution of the 1960s and 1970s ended chronic food deficits and while cereals still command the attention of policy makers, fruit production has surged impressively, making India the second largest global producer behind China.

• Annual growth in horticulture has seen fruit production grow at faster rate and constitute the larger segment of agriculture. • No doubt, there has been manifold increase in area, production and productivity but when we compare the productivity of various major fruit crops with other developed countries, our productivity is very low.

• This may be mainly attributed by non-availability of quality planting material and seeds, existence of old unproductive seedling orchards, small and unirrigated land holdings, use of inferior genetic stocks/ varieties/hybrids, poor management and non-adoption of package of practices, high incidence of pest and diseases, heavy pre and post harvest losses and lack of trained human resource.

• To meet increasing demand the productivity per unit area per unit time and per unit investment has to be increased from limited land resources, where production and supply of quality planting material of elite varieties is one such important factor that can bring tremendous improvement in production, productivity and higher economic returns to farmers.

• This may be mainly attributed by non-availability of quality planting material and seeds, existence of old unproductive seedling orchards, small and unirrigated land holdings, use of inferior genetic stocks/ varieties/hybrids, poor management and non-adoption of package of practices, high incidence of pest and diseases, heavy pre and post harvest losses and lack of trained human resource.

Theoretical Probability Distribution

Many random variables associated with statistical experiments have similar properties, and as such can be described by the same probability functions. The distribution obtained from a theoretical listing of outcomes and probabilities, which can be described by a mathematical formula representing same phenomenon of interest is called a theoretical probability distribution. The distributions of discrete and continuous random variables are accordingly called discrete or continuous probability distributions.

Discrete Probability Distribution: It can be defined as a probability distribution of discrete random variables. Such a distribution will represent data that has a f inite countable number of outcomes. If the random variable X is a discrete random variable, the probability function P(X) is called probability mass function and its distribution is called discrete probability distribution. There are two conditions that a discrete probability distribution must satisfy. These are given as follows:

Time Series

A series of observations recorded over time is known as a time series. In other words, a time series is a set of observations taken at specified times, usually at equal intervals. For example: Annual retail sales, rainfall measurements, heartbeats per minute, etc. Such studies are to be based on the analysis of time series data collected over time. Thus, the analysis of time series plays an important role in an investigation of economic, social, commercial and even biological phenomenon.

Components of time series

In a long time series, generally, there are following four components:

• Secular trend or long term movements

• Seasonal variations

• Cyclic variations • Random or irregular movements

• Secular trend or long term movements: It is that characteristic of a time series which extends consistently throughout the entire period of time under consideration. It shows a long term tendency of an activity to grow or to decline. The term long period of time in a relative phenomenon and cannot be defined exactly. For some cases a period as small as a weak may be fairly long while in other cases, a period as long as two years may not be assumed long.

Family: Ixodidae (Hard ticks)

General characters

•These ticks have hard chitinous shield called scutum on their dorsal surface, so they are called hard ticks. Scutum extends over the entire dorsal surface in male and only anterior one-third of dorsal surface in larvae, nymph and female.

 •Mouth parts are anterior and visible from dorsal aspect.

 •Eyes are one pair (if present) situated on the lateral margin of scutum.

•Spiracles are one pair and situated posterolaterally to the fourth coxae. 

 •Basis capituli or capitulum present at anterior, and have mouthparts and palps.

•The body of female may have one pair marginal grooves at lateral side of behind the scutum.

B.T.U.: It stands for British thermal unit. The heat required to raise the temperature of one pond of the water through 1oF is called BTU (Plate 82).

In drip irrigation water is distributed throughout the field from a system of pressurized pipelines. The pressure must be sufficient to overcome the frictional losses and elevation differences. The flow through the drip pipes may be laminar or turbulent or a combination of both. Aquaculture has played a sustaining role in global food systems by providing expanded food production and livelihood benefits with relatively minimal environmental harm. (Igwegbe et al., 2021). To emphasize the importance of the aquaculture sector, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2020) stated that, global aquaculture production increased by 5.27%, hitting a record-breaking productivity value of 114.5 million tonnes between 1990 and 2018 (Pauly and Zeller 2017). Aquaculture has profited from developments in science and technology in nearly every aspect such as a greater diversity of species, nutritional regimes, production techniques, organizational frameworks, and marketing compared to other agricultural industries (FAO 2020). As an illustration, enhanced reproductive technologies have made it possible for individuals to achieve closed life cycles of aquaculture species, resulting in the diversification of species in the aquaculture sector (Weber and Lee 2014). The utilization of live feeds in hatcheries, such as microalgae, artemia, rotifers, brine shrimp, and various copepods, has eliminated the obstacle in breeding a variety of marine organisms (Conceição et al., 2010).

Approximately 60 varieties of fish species have shown significant improvements in features of economic value through selective breeding assisted by quantitative genetics (Zuma 2022). River shrimps (Levy et al., 2017), Yellow catfish (Roskoski et al., 1975), and mono-sex tilapias (Mair et al., 1997) all have been produced owing to sex reversal technology and DNA markers linked to sex determination. The risk of inbreeding has decreased due to intrafamily screening being made possible by molecular parentage assignment (Xu et al., 2020). Selection for characteristics, particularly are governed by single genes and a small number of significant genes (Fuji et al., 2007; Houston et al., 2008) has been made possible by QTL (quantitative trait locus mapping) and marker-assisted selection (MAS) (Yue 2014). Enhanced feed formulations dependent on the dietary needs for every fish species have enhanced feed conversion rate (FCR) and decreased feed cost (Tacon and Metian 2015). Innovations for disease control (Kelly and Renukdas 2020) have minimized the prevalence of ailments in aquaculture.

1.1 Introduction to Integrated Watershed Management

Definition and Scope of Integrated Watershed Management: Integrated Watershed Management (IWM) refers to a comprehensive approach to managing the resources and ecological processes within a watershed area in a coordinated and integrated manner. Integrated watershed management represents a holistic approach to managing natural resources within a watershed, with the aim of achieving sustainable development while maintaining ecosystem health and resilience. It involves collaboration among various stakeholders and integrates scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom to address complex environmental challenges. This section aims to provide a clear understanding of what integrated watershed management entails, including its scope and key components.

a. Definition of Integrated Watershed Management: Integrated Watershed Management is a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach that considers the entire watershed as a unit for planning and managing natural resources. It involves the coordinated management of land, water, vegetation, and other resources within a watershed to achieve sustainable development goals while preserving ecological integrity.

Introduction

Soil is one of the crucial natural resources that support life on the earth and controls the economic conditions of the nation. Soil erosion has become a serious problem in both rainfed and irrigated areas of India thus it of vital importance to raise awareness about soil erosion and their reclamation / management methods, so that future land management decisions can lead to more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. In India almost 130 million hectares of land, i.e., 45 % of total geographical surface area, is affected by serious soil erosion through gorge and gully, shifting cultivation, cultivated wastelands, sandy areas, deserts, and water logging.

In India, the soil is eroded at an average annual rate of 16.35 tonnes per hectare which means 5334 million tonnes per year for the country as a whole. Out of this, about 29 per cent is permanently lost to the sea, while 61% is simply transferred from one place to another, and the remaining 10% is deposited in reservoirs (which mean the storage capacity is reduced by 1-2 per cent annually (Narayana and Ram Babu, 1983)). Singh et al. (1990) estimated that the average annual soil loss is about 15.2 tonnes per hectare and at national level it amounts to about 4978 million tonnes annually. The annual erosion rates vary from region to region. In dense forests covers, snow-clad cold deserts and arid regions of western Rajasthan, the annual erosion rates are less than 5 tonnes per hectare. On the other hand, about 64 per cent of the total soil is contributed by highly to very severely eroded areas, such as the Shiwalik hills (annual rate is more than 80 tonnes per hectare), the Western Ghats, black and red soil regions, ravines and other gully eroded areas and the northeastern region. For the first time, Gurmel Singh prepared map of soil erosion in India (Fig. 7.1), on the basis of iso-erosion lines i.e. line joining the place of same erosion rates.

Submerged soils/Flooded soil

Submerged soils are the type of soils that are saturated with water for a sufficiently long time in a year. This gives the soil the following distinctive gley horizons resulting from oxidation-reduction processes:

The soil is intermittently saturated with water, oxidation of organic matter is slow and it accumulated within the “A” horizon. Fe and Mn are deposited as rusty mottles or streaks if the diffusion of O2 into the soil is slow in the second horizon, whereas if the diffusion is rapid, they are deposited as concretions.

Types of submerged soils

1. Waterlogged soils- Waterlogged soils are saturated with water for a sufficiently long time annually to give the soil the distinctive gley horizons resulting from oxidation-reduction processes. Saturation with water may be due to impermeability of the soil material, or the presence of an impervious layer, or a high water table.

2. Marsh Soils- These types of soils are more or less permanently saturated or submerged. Freshwater marshes can be classified according to their origin into upland, lowland, and transitional. Upland marshes are poor in bases and have pH 3.5-4.5 because they receive mainly rainwater. Lowland marshes are saturated or submerged with water-carrying bases and have pH 5.0-6.0.

Introduction

Perishable nature of horticultural produce is a major factor contributing in high post-harvest losses. The metabolic processes such as respiration, transpiration, and ethylene production remain active after the harvesting of produce, which drive ripening and senescence Fig. 1. Thus, an effective post-harvest handling is crucial to delay these changes. The rate of these processes depends on the produce’s physiological characteristics, composition, and storage conditions like temperature and humidity. Low-temperature storage is the simplest and most efficient method to slow down deterioration Escobedo-Avellaneda and Welti-Chanes, 2016. Combining low temperatures with methods that limit oxygen exposure, which fuels many enzymatic reactions, further extends shelf life and maintains food quality. Reduced oxygen levels decrease respiration and the activity of enzymes like polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase.

The knowledge on fundamental principle of chemistry is important to understand and examine the mechanisms of reactions to form products. The chemistry of soil processes will also help understanding the correlation between the basic and applied sciences for achieving the sustainable ecosystem in the environment. The formation and stability of bonds, thermodynamic principles, radioactivity, coordination number etc. are essential to solve the on-going interactions in nature. The structure of atomic models, valence and equivalent weight, creating elementary particles, quarks, neutrinos, bosons are some of the important arena where fundamental study and research can be explored for the basic and strategic ideas. Hence, it is very much essential to apprehend the concept of physical chemistry, soil chemistry and geochemistry to correlate with the definitions of chemistry for understanding the source/sink properties of soils for nutrient adsorption and release characteristics.

4.1 Introduction

Understanding the research setting is crucial for comprehending the underlying factors, dynamics, and consequences of migration.

4.2.1 General Information of the State

West Bengal is a state located in the eastern part of India, situated along the Bay of Bengal. It has a population of over 91 million people and covers an area of 88,752 square kilometres (34,267 square miles). West Bengal ranks as the fourth most populous and thirteenth-largest state in India in terms of area, and it is the eighth-most populous country subdivision in the world. The Bengal region, which is a part of the Indian subcontinent, shares borders with Bangladesh to the east, Nepal to the north, and Bhutan to the northwest. Agricultural processing, often referred to as agro-processing, is the transformation of raw agricultural materials into products that are suitable for consumption or further manufacturing. This process adds value to agricultural products, enabling them to be stored, distributed, and marketed more effectively.

Agricultural Processing can Involve a Range of Activities, Including

Cleaning and sorting: Removing impurities, dirt, and unwanted materials from the raw agricultural produce.

The word statistic is used as a singular, denoting the numerical data. Statistics are the numerical quantities calculated from sample observations. Here, the word statistics hence is plural. Basically, statistics is defined as the statistical data (in the plural sense) and also as statistical methods (in the singular sense). A clearer and more precise definition is that ‘statistics is the study of methods and procedures for collecting, classifying, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data to make scientific inferences from it’. Bio statistics is the science dealing with the application of statistical methods to the problems of biological sciences.

2.1 FUNCTIONS OF STATISTICS

a) To present the facts in a definite form: If the data or results are given in numbers, rather than in qualitative statements, they will be more useful. The statements like ‘there is a considerable amount of unemployment in a country or the human population in a state is increasing at a faster rate’ are not in definite forms. The statements should be in definite form like there is a 15 percent unemployment in 2023 or the population is increasing by 5 percent every decade.
