• More number of species: In the animal kingdom more than 85 per cent of the species belongs to insect group. Total number of insects described so far is more than 9 lakhs.

Important Points to Remember

• The word “biotechnology” was first coined in 1917 by a Hungarian agricultural engineer, Karl Ereky. He used it to describe a system for raising pigs on sugar beets as their primary food source. He defined Biotechnology as “all lines of work by which products are produced from raw materials with the aid of living things”. He defined such a new terminology since most of the industries use mechanical devices - machines - to make things, biotechnology uses living organisms to make products of economic value.
• Many different scientific fields are responsible for emergence of this biological revolution. They are biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, computer science and what not?
• Hence, a newer, refined, definition of biotechnology was offered by U.S. Office of Technology Assessment: “Any technique that uses living organisms to make or modify products, to improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific purposes.”
• The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity defines biotechnology as: “Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.”

Abstract

Starch is an important plant-based product and an abundant biomaterial, used worldwide for different purposes in many industrial sectors including food, health, chemical and engineering sector. Starch versatility in industrial applications is largely defined by its physicochemical properties and functionality. Starch in its native form has limited functionality and application but advancements in technological processing have led to the wide-range modification of starch for different purposes. It can be easily degraded by microorganisms hence is a natural source of bioenergy in the form of bioethanol and biohydrogen as well as in the development of biodegradable packaging materials. Various technological interventions can significantly improve the characteristics of native starch and be tailor-made to the specific needs of the packaging and food industry. Native starch can be treated by various methods to modify its characteristics. Modification improves starch paste clarity, viscosity, syneresis and freeze-thaw stability leading to a wide range of food applications. Esterification lowers gelatinization temperature and retrogradation lowers the tendency to form gel and higher paste clarity which shows applications in refrigerated and frozen foods, as emulsion stabilizers and for encapsulation. Cross-linking increases the stability of granules towards swelling, high temperature, high shear, and acidic conditions. Starch-based nano-composite polymers have their application in coating and packaging of food as well as non food commodities. Techniques involving extrusion, casting, spinning, and nanotechnology can be used in the production of films, foams, and nanocomposite materials. Due to the unique characteristics of resistant starch, it is being used as a valuable supplement in the formulation of drugs, pharmaceuticals, various functional foods and in the microencapsulation of probiotics and bioactive compounds.

Tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. is an important vegetable cultivated throughout the world; both outdoors and under protected structures for fresh market consumption and processing. In India this nutritive rich vegetable is grown over an area of 0.60 m ha with an estimated production of 11.9 mt. Productivity of tomato in India is lower (18.6 t/ha) than the world productivity (27 t/ha) (Anonymous 2009). Tomato is grown in a wide range of climatic conditions across states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Members of the family Cruciferae commonly used as vegetable include Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and mustard etc. The genus Brassica is known for its important agricultural and horticultural crops. A dislike for cabbage or broccoli can result from the fact that these plants contain a compound similar to
Phenyl thiocarbamide (PTC), which is bitter or tasteless to some people depending on their ‘taste buds’ (Theresa, 1995).

To understand the movement of a ocean particle, We have to consider different forces. The forces that are working are pressure gradient force, coriolis force, acceleration due to gravity and friction. The summation of all these forces is balanced by total force. As we consider unit mass, the force is equal to acceleration. The total equation is called equation of motion.

Feed additives

Feed additives may be defined as those substances that are added in livestock feeds to improve quality, digestibility and utilisation of feeds. It is also aimed at production improved quality of livestock produce, performance and health of the livestock and birds.

Classification of Additives

Citrus genus belongs to the family Rutaceae that comes in various forms and sizes (from round to oblong) that commonly known as oranges, mandarins, limes, lemons and citrons. Besides being consumed as raw/fresh fruits, they are also used in the industries of beverages, cosmetic and pharmaceuticals. Citrus fruits have got abundant quantity of vitamin-C and other micronutrients like sugars, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, calcium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, riboflavin and pantothenic acids etc. (Economos, 1999). Secondary metabolites like flavonoids, limonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, phenolic acids and other essential oils of this fruit also have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous as well as cardiovascular protective effects (Lu et al., 2015).

Pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) is an important fruit crop cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions, serving nutritional, medicinal and aesthetic need of human beings. It is grown in Iran, Spain, India, Moracco, Egypt, Afghanistan, Arabia, West Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, China, USA and Japan.World pomegranate production is currently estimated at 1.5-2.0 million tonnes, 90% of which is in Iran and India. The rest is distributed amongst various Mediterranean countries, China, the United States, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Argentina (CBI, 2014). In India, it is found from Kashmir to Kanyakumari cultivated in Maharashtra,Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,Karnataka andAndhra Pradesh.Among the different states growing pomegranate, Maharashtra is the largest producer occupying 2/3^rd of the cultivated area in India followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

4.1. Promotion of Kitchen Gardening 4.1.1. Essential Guide Lines for Kitchen Gardening • The location should be in the backyard of the house. As far as practicable, kitchen garden plot should be located near to the well, water tap or other source of irrigation. It should never be located in the shady area of home, which is generally not suitable for most of the vegetables. There should be enough of sunlight for major part of day. • It should be fenced with boundary wall or fruit crop or live fence all around. • The layout should be such as to make the garden look attractive and allow access to all its parts. The land should be laid out in small paths and plots. • The garden should preferably be rectangular in shape. • About 200 m2 area is sufficient for a five members family to supply about 1.5 kg vegetable per day

Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum) is a resilient and ancient cereal crop native to the Indian subcontinent. Its cultivation dates back to ancient times, with references found in historical texts such as the Brihad Sanhita. This millet species exhibits remarkable adaptability to various agroclimatic conditions, making it well-suited for cultivation across different regions. Kodo millet thrives in a range of soil types, particularly well-drained and sandy soils, which contribute to its successful growth and yield. In terms of nutritional composition, kodo millet stands out as a significant source of protein, dietary fiber, minerals, and antioxidants. Its bioactive components contribute to potential health benefits, including aiding in diabetes management, improving cardiovascular health, and providing essential nutrients. The processing of kodo millet involves various techniques such as puffing, roasting, milling, and fermentation, each influencing its nutritional profile and culinary applications.

The solid phase of a soil system makes up a mixture of inorganic and organic materials. The inorganic fraction of soil originated from the weathering of rocks and minerals consists of rock fragments and minerals of varying sizes and composition. Hence, this inorganic soil fraction composed by soil minerals also referred as mineral fraction of soil and is caused due to alteration of mineralogical composition of soil by bioclimatic factors. A great deal of attention is being paid to the composition of minerals in soils, their formation and distribution over the earth’s surface. Soil genesis or pedogenosis (a more useful term as soil belongs to pedosphere) deals with the processes of formation and development of soil. The branch of soil science that integrates the studies of genesis, morphology and classification of soils as natural body is called Pedology. The process of weathering of rocks, pedogenesis and development of soil profile are described successively in this chapter.

The words ‘system’, ‘sub-system’ and ‘practice’ are commonly used in agroforestry literature. In a broad sense, a system is defined as a group of associated elements forming a unified whole and working together in a well defined regular relation for a common goal. An agroforestry system refers to a type of agroforestry land-use that extends over a locality to the extent of forming a land utilization type of the locality. Sub-system and practice are lower-order terms in the hierarchy with lesser magnitudes of role, content and complexity. However, these terms are used loosely, and almost synonymously. Classification of agroforestry systems is necessary in order to understand and provide a practical framework for evaluating systems and developing action plans for their improvement. Any classification scheme should satisfy the following criteria (Nair, 2008).

Rainfed farming has a distinct place in the Indian agriculture, occupying 67 % of cultivated area contributing 44 % of food grains to our national food basket, supporting 40% of human and 65% of livestock population. The system is characterized by resource poor farmers, poor infrastructure and low investment in technology inputs. Even when full irrigation potential of the country is realized, 50% of the net sown area is continued to be rainfed. The important problems encountered in rainfed areas are unfavorable weather, limited choice of crops and varieties, low cropping intensity and unstable productivity. The research work done by the net work of AICRPDA (All India Co-ordinate Research Project for Dryland areas) centres and SAUs (State Agricultutal Universities) indicated that the production in rainfed environment could be enhanced by 200 % compared to the productivity of farmers’ field by adopting improved cropping systems and agro techniques.

a) Definition

Regression analysis is a mathematical measure of the average relationship between two or more variables in terms of the original units of data.

In regression analysis, there are two types of variables. The variable whose value is influenced and is to be predicted, is known as the dependent (or predicted/ response explained) variable and the variable that influences the values of the dependent variable or is used for prediction purposes, is known as the independent (predictor/explanatory/ auxiliary/ regressor) variable.

1.1 Meaning

The English word 'communication' is derived from the Latin communis, which means common sense. Introduction

It is an eminent actuality that the diets of end users are being advanced globally; however, the patterns of food procurement and food safety protocols diverge across countries. The fundamental rationale of the trend is that the consumer awareness with regard to food safety, quality and variety has been proliferated greatly. Looking back to the history of food industry, it is unquestionable that the past has a full frame of misfortune, indignity and many disastrous incidents. Moreover, the entire muddle was not always related with microorganisms; numerous of them were associated with environmental problems, technological advancements or certain alterations in production protocols and management.

10.1. Introduction

Irrigation facilities are created by the Government at huge cost for supplying water to the farmers for raising crops to increase agricultural production. The major and medium irrigation projects are planned, constructed, managed, operated and maintained by the Irrigation Departments, wherein certain procedures and rules are evolved and followed to the delivery schedule of canals, frequency of supply and distribution of water to the farmers, and closing of canals. The creation of such facilities resulted in ushering the green revolution in the sixties and seventies in the production of food grains and also employment generation in the country, thereby improving the socio-economic condition of Indian farmers. However, optimized management of irrigation water is the key to the sustainable development of agriculture and livestock. Since management of water for irrigation is highly location-specific, depending upon agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions, type of irrigation project and land use pattern, it differs from project to project and region to region in the country.

1.1 Introduction

Horticulture is defined as “The science and art of growing vegetables, fruits, flowers, ornamental plants and landscaping of gardens and surroundings in small and commer cial gardens”. The word ‘horticulture’ has been derived from Latin language and con sists of two parts, viz., ‘hortus’ means garden and ‘cultura’ means cultivation. Thus, the word ‘horticulture’ means garden cultivation. Horticulture basically deals with Pomology, Olericulture, and Floriculture and Landscaping. Horticulture is gaining im portance as it gives more returns per unit area and also gives nutritious food to human beings thereby improves quality of life and enhances the aesthetic beauty of nature. Vegetable growing is one of the major branches of horticulture with respect to value of the products.

1.0 General

 The design of canal involves following three major aspects:

 A Irrigation and drainage canal network planning.

 B Determination of discharge / capacities of  canals and drainages.

 C Determination of shape and size i.e. geometrical dimensions of the proposed canal section, generally

 known as design of canal section. More appropriately it can be called as design of internal section

 of canal. It can be further divided in three following parts viz.

 i. Design of unlined canals:

 ii. Design of lined canals: or a canal may be partly lined and partly unlined.

 iii. Choice between the unlined and lined canals. This aspect should be distinguished from the selection of type of lining. However, the scope of choice of lining may include both the aspects.

 The design of canal section remains incomplete without the design of its embankments, either in lined or unlined canal, so the next aspect is

 iv. Design of canal embankments. Still to complete the design of a canal one more aspect is required i.e.

 v. Canal aesthetics and canal arboriculture.

Pack inspection: It is similar to continuous inspection except that here inspector(s) may make in-process checks during different processing operations under contract but not required to be present all the times in the plant during operation.

Package: The package means a pre packed box, tin, barrel, pouch or can etc in which food article is packed.

Package store: A store that sells bottled or canned alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises.

Packaging: Packaging is an industrial and marketing technique for containing, protecting, identifying and facilitating the sale and distribution of agricultural, industrial and consumer products. Packaging is defined as an enclosure of products, items or package in a wrapped pouch, bags, box, cup, bottle or any container form to perform one or more of the functions as containment, protection and preservation, communication and utility or performance. Technically, packaging is a system or method by which a product from the manufacturing point to the consumer level reaches in a safe and sound condition at an affordable cost. The primary purpose of the packaging is to protect the food product, to keep it in good condition and to preserve the flavour until it reaches the consumer. It is therefore, very essential that a suitable form of the packaging is chosen for a finished product. Packaging is an art, which determines the buying decision of a consumer. or Wrapping / placement of objects in paper / other packaging materials keeping in box, etc is known as packaging which has two main functions, to assemble the produces / objects in convenient units for handling and to protect them during transporting, marketing and storage which results in extended shelf life of the produce. “Packaging” play a very important role not only in ensuring safety of the product during transportation, storage and distribution and in conveying information about the pack contents to the consumers, but also ensuring desired sensory characteristics and micro-biological soundless till consumed.

Definition of Sustainable Aquaculture

Sustainable aquaculture refers to the development and management of aquaculture systems that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves balancing the economic viability, environmental health, and social equity of aquaculture practices. Sustainable aquaculture aims to:

1. Protect and Restore Ecosystems: Minimize environmental impacts and enhance ecosystem services.

2. Support Economic Viability: Ensure the profitability and resilience of aquaculture operations.

3. Promote Social Responsibility: Foster equitable access to resources, benefits, and opportunities for all stakeholders.

Human beings came into existence 1 million years ago. Insects which constitute 70-90% of all animals present in this world came into existence 250- 500 million years ago.Insects are highly specialized group of invertebrates belonging to phyla arthropoda characterized by having a bilateral symmetrical body covered by Exoskeleton chitin; with jointed appendages provided with independently movable muscle and inserted in to special pockets of exoskeleton; with a haemocoelic body cavity containing the circulating blood in which are bathed the internal organs; with a dorsal heart and decentralized ventral nerve cord; and with tracheal system for respiration; metamorphosis direct or indirect.

The insects are bilaterally symmetrical tracheate Arthopods is which the body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. A single pair of antennae is present and head also bears a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae,. The thorax possess three pairs of legs and usually two pairs of wings. The abdomen is devoid of any ambulatory appendages and the genital opening is situated near the posterior end of the body. Post embryonic development is rarely direct and metamorphosis usually occurs.

Insect definition

Insects (from Latin insectum, a calque of Greek ?ντομον [éntomon], “cut into sections”) are a class of invertebrates within the arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae.

The Cladocera, commonly known as ‘waterfleas’ form a primitive group of microcrustaceans. They play an important role in the aquatic food chain and also contribute significantly to the zooplankton dynamics and secondary productivity in freshwater ecosystem. Though most cladocera is filter feeders, they also feed on detritus, algae, small rotifers and copepod nauplii. They keep a check on eutrophication for which this group is also widely used as good indicators of ecosystem health and sentinels of environmental change (Eggermont and Martens, 2011; Padhye and Dahanukar 2015). At the same time, cladocera is the favorite food prey of many invertebrates and many vertebrates. Their characteristic jerky movements make them easily visible to the predators and that is why most of fish larvae were found to prefer cladocera over the prey (Mayer and Wahl,1971).

Cladocerans have a distinct head, a single compound eye, and a large mandible for grinding food particles. Cladocerans feed on algae, small rotifers, and copepod nauplii. Cladocerans reproduce mostly asexually via parthenogenesis. But they can also reproduce sexually based on the environmental conditions.

The distribution of cladocerans is affected by different factors including temperature, rainfall, water quality, nutrients, macrophytes, flood pulse etc. (Ghidini et al.,2009; Kiss et al., 2014). Their metabolic rate is variable with water temperature.

The order cladocera belongs to the subclass Branchipoda and includes minute crustaceans generally in the size range of 0.2 to 5.0 mm.

The exile of Rama and his journey to the forests (vanvasa) for 14 years was started from Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh, India) and ended to Lanka (Sri Lanka), through different forests, territorial regions, lands, hills, lakes of old India. The apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) is a significant temperate fruit growing in India and is widely cultivated in many regions around the world with cold winters, frost-free springs, and warm summers. It is a deciduous tree that belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a widely cultivated fruit tree and is known by various names across different regions. In India, apples are commonly referred to as “seb” in Hindi, “sev” in Bengali, “sevva pazham” in Tamil, and “seema palam” in Telugu. These names reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the country (Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 2020). The apple is a round fruit that comes in a variety of colors including red, green, and yellow. The apple tree, like most plants, has a specific chromosome number that determines its genetic makeup and characteristics. The chromosome number of the cultivated apple, Malus domestica, is 2n = 34 (Janick et al., 1996). This means that each cell of the apple tree contains 34 chromosomes, with 17 pairs in total. Most of cultivated apples (2n=34) are diploids, and a (2n=51) are triploids. Understanding the chromosome number is crucial for breeding programs and genetic research as it helps in identifying genetic variations and selecting desired traits. Delicious group apples are widely popular and cover 50–70% of the land. The apple, which is the most popular table fruit in the world, is regarded as the king of temperate fruits. Its positive qualities include a pleasing look and a longer shelf life at room temperature. Except for the Kashmir Valley and a small portion of the Kullu Valley, the majority of apple acreage is on hill slopes. Unlike other fruits, apples can be grown effectively in sod culture as long as the apple plants are given more nutrients than is recommended to prevent nutritional competition between grass and apple trees. They require a cool climate with cold winters and moderate summers for the fruit to develop properly.

Population density in rural areas tends to be lower compared to urban centers. The distribution of rural settlements can be influenced by factors such as terrain, availability of natural resources, and historical land use patterns.

b. Urban Centers: Urban areas within watershed boundaries consist of cities and towns with higher population densities and more developed infrastructure. These areas are characterized by a concentration of economic activities, services, and amenities. Population distribution within urban centers can vary widely, with some areas experiencing high population density in downtown cores and others having more spread-out suburbs.

 

Pathology of Upper Respiratory Tract

In many infectious diseases, there is inflammation of mucosa of upper respiratory passage leading to nasal discharge which is catarrhal, purulent or fibrinous, depending on the type of infection. The infection may extend to lower parts of respiratory tract and reach the lungs causing pathological alterations. Rhinitis is the inflammation of nasal mucosa (Fig. 4.1). Sinusitis is the inflammation of sinuses e.g. frontal sinusitis in dehorned cattle. The larvae of botfly Oestrus ovis enter the nasal passage and migrate up to frontal sinuses and turbinate bones and cause mucopurulent inflammation. Similarly, leeches (Dinobdella ferox) is known to cause nasal cavity inflammation in domestic animals and suck blood. Rhinitis is caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica in pigs and is characterized by mucopurulent exudate, disappearance of nasal septum, retarded growth of snout and plugging of passage by solidified exudate and dead tissue. This condition is known as porcine atrophic rhinitis. Epistaxis is bleeding from nasal passage due to trauma, neoplasm (Fig.4.2A) and ulcerative lesions as a result of infections (Fig.4.2B). Pharyngitis is the inflammation of pharynx while laryngitis is the inflammation of larynx.

Theoretical orientation involves the scholarly and theoretical process that shapes the precise definition and written content of a complete research project. It involves incorporating conceptual ideas, logical discussions, and the quest for knowledge to develop a theory that aligns with the defined objectives and research design established during the research process.

3.1 Migration

Migration refers to the process of individuals or groups of people moving from one place to another with the intention of establishing a new permanent or semi permanent residence. It involves the relocation of people across geographical, political, or social boundaries, typically over long distances. Migration can occur within a country (internal migration) or involve crossing international borders (international migration).

People migrate for various reasons, including economic opportunities, seeking better living conditions, escaping persecution or conflict, joining family members, pursuing education or career opportunities, or being forced to leave their homes due to natural disasters or environmental factors. The motivations behind migration can be complex and multifaceted, influenced by a combination of push factors (negative circumstances in the home country) and pull factors (attractive opportunities in the destination country).Migration can take different forms, such as labour migration, where individuals move to another region or country for employment purposes, or refugee migration, where people flee their home countries due to fear of persecution or violence. Tillage is a common agricultural practice that involves preparing the soil for planting crops. It is the manipulation of soil to create a suitable seedbed, manage weeds, and improve soil structure for optimal crop growth. Tillage methods can vary widely and are often classified into different types based on their intensity and purpose. Here are some common types of tillage:

1. Conventional Tillage: This is the most intensive form of tillage and involves turning over the soil completely, often using a plow. It disrupts the natural soil structure and exposes the soil to erosion but can effectively control weeds and prepare a clean seedbed.

2. Reduced Tillage: Also known as conservation tillage, this method aims to disturb the soil as little as possible. It typically involves minimal or no plowing and relies on techniques like no-till, strip-till, or zone-till. Reduced tillage helps to maintain soil structure and reduce erosion while conserving moisture.

3. No-Till: In this approach, the soil is left undisturbed, with crop residues from previous harvests left on the field surface. A planter creates small openings in the soil for seeds. No-till farming helps retain moisture, reduce erosion, and maintain soil health. It is widely adopted for its conservation benefits.

3.1 MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY (AVERAGES)

When data are presented in raw form or in the form of frequency distribution, they fail to provide a general idea of the data under study. The general idea of statistical methods is to condense the raw data into a form that can convey some meaningful characteristic(s) of the data. Though classification simplifies the data and improves the understanding of the main characteristics in the data, it is still difficult to remember. In any distribution of data, values of a variable may tend to cluster (or concentrate) around a central value. The data must be condensed into a single value. Such presentation of data is called a Central Tendency and the measures devised to consider this tendency are known as Measures of Central Tendency.

An average condenses a frequency distribution or raw data and presents it in a single representative number. It is that single value which is considered as the most representative or typical value for a set of values. Such a value usually lies somewhere near the centre of the group. That is why, an average is usually referred to as a measure of central tendency. It is located at a point around which most of the other values tend to cluster and therefore it is also termed as a measure of central location.

A bioassay, also known as a biological assay, is a scientific experiment used to quantify the impact of a substance on a living organism. According to Finney (1952), bioassay is defined as measurement of potency of any stimulus (physical, chemical, biological, physiological) by means of reactions which it produces in living matter. It is an essential procedure in insecticide development and the assessment of environmental pollutants, as well as the evaluation of the effects of interventions viz. pesticides and herbicides on the environment. In the field of biostatistics, a bioassay refers to a set of techniques used to determine the quantity or intensity of an agent or stimulus based on the response of the subject. Typically, many methods are employed to assess the strength or effectiveness of an insecticide by examining its impact on living organisms.

An insecticide is a pesticide used to kill or eliminate insect pests in agriculture, households, and industries. Judicious use of insecticides may be a factor in the increase of agricultural productivity, but by their nature of having high toxicity to non target organisms and capability to develop resistance through widespread use, most insecticides have high potential to significantly affect and alter ecosystems. Many are toxic to humans and animals (both domestic and wildlife), and can accumulate as concentrates in the food chain and water resources, giving rise to serious environmental contamination and pollution.

pH is a quantitative measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Lower pH indicates acidity, while higher pH indicated alkalinity. Pure water at 25°C has a pH of 7.0 as the concentrations of H3 O+ and OH-. pH is defined as potential of hydrogen and is a measure of how acidic or basic a substance or solution is. The concentration of Hydrogen (H+) in a solution determines its pH. Higher concentrations of H+ ions correspond to lower pH values (more acidic), and lower concentrations of H+ ions correspond to higher pH values (More alkaline/basic). pH is an important measurement concept in many fields, including chemistry, biology, and environmental science. pH of blood and other fluids of the body, secretions etc?, determine the health status of an individual. Likewise, pH determines the quality of soil for plant growth. In medical sciences, pH plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy internal environment for various bodily functions. Internal environment of an animal or human is tightly regulated more so the pH of different body fluids like blood, saliva and stomach acid.

pH balance is a very prime aspect to maintain homeostasis inside a biological system. Speaking of which the first thing that comes to mind is the enzyme function. Many enzymes have a specific pH range for optimal activity. Any deviation from this specific pH range not only significantly disrupt their function but also hinder biochemical processes involved. Most vital operations of a cell are nutrition transport and waste disposal i?e?, excretion. pH of the fluids surrounding cells impacts these activities; hence, maintaining a proper pH is vital for healthy cell function. Different organs of the body need to maintain different pH ranges for functioning accordingly. Stomach operates at acidic pH to digest the food material ingested whereas, blood need alkaline pH for optimal oxygen transport by RBC.

Global meat production is a crucial component of the global food system, driven by expanding populations, wealth development, and shifting dietary preferences. It involves the rearing of animals such as cattle, poultry, pigs, and sheep, and has experienced rapid growth in recent decades. In 2023, worldwide meat production was estimated to reach approximately 350 million tons per year, with chicken, pork, and beef being the most popular forms. Poultry meat is the most produced and consumed meat globally due to its lower cost and shorter production cycles. Countries like the U.S., Brazil, and China are major poultry producers globally. Pork is highly consumed, especially in Asia, with China being both the largest producer and consumer of pork. By 2050, the global human population is projected to reach 10 billion, presenting a major challenge in ensuring adequate balanced food. The demand for animal-based foods is increasing, and the intensification of animal farming is leading to the exploitation of natural resources and resulting in natural calamities that adversely affect humans, animals, and ecosystems. Meat production fosters sustainable development as it employs and supports over a billion people worldwide, many of whom live in underdeveloped regions. Meat contains essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals, which help prevent nutritional deficiencies and improve health (Headey et al., 2018; Zaharia et al., 2021). The meat production industry can also transform grass and agricultural waste into healthy food for people, thereby promoting food security in a world with limited natural resources (Mottet et al., 2017). However, it is important to note that meat has a much larger environmental and climatic footprint compared to plant-based diets (Poore & Nemecek, 2018).

Ranikhet disease is a contagious viral disease of poultry characterized by high mortality petechial hemorrhage in proventriculus, ulcers and hemorrhage at caecal tonsils and pneumoencephalitis. It is also known as Newcastle disease (Fig.3.1).

Vaccine that protects and shields from numerous dangerous diseases (vaccine-preventable diseases; VPD) is an important area of research and development. Considering that vaccine has been very useful in successfully combating numerous infectious diseases in the past 200 years, they are considered as a historical turning point in the field of public health and medicines. Critical illnesses like the smallpox and wild polio (virus types 2 and 3) have mostly been eradicated as a result of mass immunisation programmes worldwide. This article offers a comprehensive history of vaccination since inception to its present forms, with future projections. Beginning with the variolation techniques in the early 17th century, it discusses the important turn of events from its discovery to the continued advancements and inventions till the covid-19 vaccine. Alongside the detailed core aspect, the chapter also describes the benefits of the one health approach with the zoonotic diseases in focus.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine was the first authorised vaccine developed using mRNA vaccine production technology, against SARS-CoV-2. Well accepted by the population, it proved to be a major life saving intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article discusses the mRNA vaccine technology and its major advantages, and provides an update on the various ongoing and completed clinical trials on the leading mRNA vaccines against various viral diseases. It also delves into the prospects and the technical challenges associated with the manufacturing of mRNA vaccine and the issues with its deployment in the low- and middle-income countries around the world. Despite the already available classical vaccine candidates, the persistent interest and continuous research in mRNA vaccine technology and the related storage, immunogenicity and lipid nanoparticles delivery aspects have helped in expanding and upgrading the vaccinology arsenals to counter diseases. Management
i) Stolons should be collected from healthy fields.
ii) Use of healthy and disease free stolons for planting.
ii) Treatment of stolons with Metalaxyl 8% + Mancozeb 64% WP (0.3%)
before planting.
2. Rust
Symptoms. In the spring or summer season the leaves and upper portion of stems are affected and become twisted. Yellow/ dusty orange pustules appear on the leaves and stems. In later part the pustules become black. Drying of leaves followed by defoliation occur.

Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most valuable and popular fruit crops all over the world (Mohsen, 2021). In India, grapes are mainly grown for table, raisin and wine making. Major grape producing countries are China, Italy, France, Spain, USA, Turkey, and India while, major wine producing countries are France, Italy, Spain, and USA (OIV, 2024). According to an estimate, grapevine is spread on an area of 1.71 lakh ha and production was 37.81 lakh MT in the country during the year 2023-24 (NHB, 2024). India ranks first in world for grape productivity and 7th for grape production during 2023-24 (APEDA, 2024).
Traditionally, grapes are grown on their own roots. However, due to deteriorating soil and water conditions, the use of rootstocks has become essential in the tropical climate of India to maintain production (Singh and Sharma, 2005). The grape industry which is important to produce wine and table grapes is facing  significant challenges due to changing climatic conditions. Climate change has led to increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events, all of which can adversely affect grapevine health and productivity. To combat, the role of grape rootstocks has become increasingly vital for maintaining sustainable viticulture. Grape rootstocks are the belowgraft joint part of the grapevine onto which the scion variety is grafted. These rootstocks are typically derived from species of Vitis genus other than Vitis vinifera, the primary species used for grape production.
