Plant breeding is the purposeful manipulation of characters in plants to create new genotype with a set of desired characters. Hence, it may basically be referred to as designed manipulation of the heritable variation for the character concerned. Living organisms possess the remarkable capacity to convert the non-living materials into living staff, which results in movement, growth, metabolism and reproduction, and thus continuity of living organisms from one generation to the next is accomplished. The continuity of life through transmission of characters is the subject of the study of heredity, while the resemblances and differences between individuals of the same or different generations is the concern of the study of variation. These two universal processes of continuity and of change, which are referred to as “Heredity” and “Variation” are primary consequences of all organisms. Organized study of these two biological processes is the science of Genetics.
Plant breeding, which may be termed as evolution of plant type directed by the will of mankind, is basically the process of selection of character(s) from heritable variation. Desirable heritable variations can also be induced through some genetic consequences like, hybridization, segregation, mutation, changing the number of chromosomes, etc. So frame of plant breeding lay on three basics:

Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Tomato was classified under Lycopersicon for several years although, initially Linnaeus (1753) classified it in the genus Solanum. Recently, molecular studies provided new data on the relationships of tomato-potato and based on these results, tomato has been again assigned to the genus Solanum. Solanum section Lycopersicon includes the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and its wild relatives, Solanum lycopersicum being the only domesticated species. The wild cherry tomato, Solanum lycopersicum var cerasiforme, the ancestor of the modern cultivated tomato has been originated in Peru-Ecuador-Bolivia region of the Andes. The Veracruz-Puebla region of Mexico is the centre of domestication of the cultivated tomato. From Mexico, tomato was taken to Italy, Spain, Portugal and other European countries, Africa and Middle East by the explorers in the 16th century. It was taken to Philippines after its discovery by Magellan in 1521, and from there it was taken to other Asian countries. Tomatoes did not have an easy passage even in Europe. The fruit got tagged as the “poison apple” in Britain, France, Spain and other European countries. Tomato moved to the USA from northern Europe around 1781 where it was first grown by Thomas Jefferson in Virginia.

Introduction
Clinical physiology is the branch of medical science that focuses on understanding the functional processes within the body under both normal and disease conditions. It emphasizes how body systems respond to disease, injury, and therapeutic interventions, and, forms the foundation of many diagnostic and therapeutic practices in veterinary medicine.
Importance and scope of Clinical Physiology in Veterinary Medicine: Clinical physiology is indispensable and plays a pivotal role in veterinary medicine. The knowledge allows for early detection of diseases, select effective treatment plans, and improved outcomes for animal patients. It is used to monitor the effects of treatment interventions, adjusting medications or therapies based on the physiological responses observed in the patient. A solid understanding of cardiovascular physiology is essential to manage heart failure condition in dog, and, treating respiratory diseases in cats or gastrointestinal
disorders in horses, relies on the knowledge of respiratory and digestive physiology. Beyond treatment, clinical physiology also plays a significant role in preventive medicine. Knowing the normal range of heart rates, blood pressure, and respiratory rates in different species allows veterinarians to quickly assess whether an animal is in distress or experiencing a pathological condition, and allow for timely intervention. It is also critical in managing the health of populations of animals, such as in livestock farming, where maintaining optimal physiological function is essential for productivity and welfare. The major systems in the body - including the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, renal, musculoskeletal, reproductive, and immune systems, can be affected by a variety of diseases, and clinical physiology provides the framework for understanding these effects. It encompasses the study of physiological processes across a wide range of species, including companion animals, livestock, wildlife, and exotic animals.

3.1 Introduction
Understanding the Earth’s atmosphere—its intricate dynamics, ever-changing weather patterns, and long-term climate trends—hinges critically on the quality and detail of the observations we collect. While remote sensing technologies offer broad perspectives from a distance, a fundamental and indispensable category of atmospheric data comes from in situ observations. The term “in situ,” meaning “in place” or “on-site,” precisely describes the nature of these measurements: they are direct, physical readings taken within the atmospheric volume itself.
These direct observations are the bedrock of meteorological science. They provide the ground truth for atmospheric conditions, offering unparalleled precision in measuring parameters such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and the characteristics of precipitation. Unlike indirect sensing, in situ methods involve instruments physically interacting with the air, yielding highly accurate and localized data points. This granular detail is crucial for a multitude of applications: it allows for the precise calibration of remote sensing instruments, provides essential validation for complex numerical weather prediction models, and enables scientists to dissect and understand fine-scale atmospheric processes that influence local weather.

Weather, while often benign and essential for life, can also manifest in powerful and destructive forms, posing significant threats to human life, property, and the environment. This chapter, “Weather Hazards,” will delve into the detailed nature of these potentially dangerous atmospheric phenomena.
We will explore a range of significant weather hazards, including severe storms such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hailstorms, which can bring intense winds, torrential rainfall, and damaging projectiles. We will also examine the characteristics and impacts of tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons), known for their devastating winds, storm surges, and widespread flooding. Furthermore, we will discuss the dangers associated with extreme temperature events, including heat waves, characterized by prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, and cold waves, marked by extended periods of dangerously cold temperatures. We will also cover the challenges posed by heavy snowfall, blizzards, and ice storms.
For each hazard, we will investigate the meteorological conditions that lead to its development, the typical characteristics and intensity scales  used to classifyit, and the primary impacts it can have on society and the natural world. Understanding the formation, behavior, and potential consequences of these weather hazards is crucial for effective forecasting, issuing timely warnings, and implementing mitigation strategies to enhance safety and resilience.

Hydrates carbons (saccharides) found in nature (animals and plants) are classified into three groups based on the number of monosaccharides found or released upon acid hydrolysis. Monosaccharides the groups of carbohydrates.
3.1 Formulation of Monosaccharides
The molecular formula of any monosaccharide (mono=one and saccharide=sugar) is Cn(H2O)n or (CH2O)n. Rhamnose and Deoxyribose are exceptions to the general formula of carbohydrates. Acetic acid (C2H4O2) and formaldehyde (CH2O) are not carbohydrates but have the formula Cn(H2O)n or (CH2O)n. Fitting and Baeyer proposed the formula CHO-(CHOH)4-CH2OH, which indicates the presence of aldehyde and five hydroxyl groups.
More than one monosaccharide molecule unites to form disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides, being simpler units, cannot be broken down further. Generally, they have two to ten carbon atoms per molecule (dioses to decoses). The monosaccharides may have either aldehyde or ketone groups. The one possible aldodiose (CH2OH.CHO) is glycolaldehyde (2-hydroxyethanal), but ketodiose is not possible since there are only two carbons. The glucose molecular formula C6H12O6 represents the number of C, H, and O atoms but not groups. However, the proposed formula, CHO-(CHOH)4-CH2OH, indicates the presence of an aldehyde and five hydroxyl groups. These simple sugars or monosaccharides have carbon backbones linked by single bonds with hydrogen and hydroxyl groups attached in an unbranched manner.

6.1 Metabolism
Dietary components like carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are continuously broken down and synthesized through various chemical reactions (exergonic or endergonic) that are concerned with energy. These processes not only break them down but also interconvert them for their synthesis. Dietary components, when utilized, are known as nutrients the body. The number of reactions occurring in living cells maintains the body cells and fluid’s homeostasis and dynamic status. To keep the dynamic state of a cell, many reactions are going on to synthesize or break down the different types and sizes of molecules. The total of these reactions is known as metabolism.
The metabolism may be anabolic or catabolic. Further, it may be aerobic or anaerobic, depending on oxygen availability. These four terms are explained below:
I. Aerobic and Anaerobic Metabolism
• Aerobic metabolism-- In aerobic metabolism, the carbohydrates (substrate) in the presence of oxygen are metabolized to release energy, carbon dioxide, and water. The released energy is converted to ATP by two processes in the mitochondria (the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation). In oxidation, the electrons released from a glucose molecule are transferred to reduced NAD+ and FAD. The oxygen (electron acceptor) is reduced to water. Water formation [from H2(g) and O2(g)] is an exothermic reaction. The energy released from the chemical bond of glucose is captured as ATP, and heat is released.

I. INTRODUCTION
The fruits and vegetables we eat and flowers and ornamentals we enjoy are biological entities. They breath, produce heat, perspire, are easily damaged, get diseases and finally die. These carry on processes characteristics of all living things before or after harvest to perform the metabolic activities:
1. to maintain cellular organization
2. to transport metabolites around the tissue and
3. to maintain membrane permeability.
The job of postharvest technologist is to understand life in fruits, vegetables and flowers and prolong their life as much as possible. The post harvest life of produce depends on the rate at which they use up their stored food reserves and their rate of water loss. The sugar and starches (carbohydrate derivatives) are stored in various parts of plants through a process known as photosynthesis occurring in growing plants and are used later to provide energy for further growth, development and to prolong post-harvest life. The process of photosynthesis in growing plants and respiration in harvested produce can be seen in Fig. 2.1. The released energy through process known as respiration occurs in plants before and after harvest. Thus, principal normal physiological processes leading to aging are respiration and transpiration.

The present study sought to empirically examine the perceived effects of contract farming on employment generation and poverty reduction. This was achieved by operationalising the construct through its technical, economic and social dimensions. Furthermore, the study explored relational linkages between the perceived effects of contract farming and the socio-economic attributes of farmers in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.
Distribution of respondents according to Age (X01), n=100
Interpretation: The obtained results reveal that the overall age ranges from 23 to 54 years, with a mean of 40.63 years and a standard deviation of 08.05. The coefficient of variation (C.V.) was 19.81%, indicating a relatively high level of uniformity in the age profile. A majority of respondents (62.00%) were middle-aged (34-49 years), followed by young farmers (23.00%) and a smaller proportion of older farmers (15.00%).
This suggests that the study area is predominantly characterised by young and middle-aged farmers. the relevance of age in contract farming is noteworthy, as active participation requires physical involvement, frequent training on modern farming practices and regular interactions with company representatives and vendors for input supply and technical guidance. Consequently, older farmers, often accustomed to traditional practices, may display relatively lower interest in contractual arrangements.
Distribution of respondents according to education (X02), n=100
Interpretation: The educational status of respondents ranged from a score of 02 to 17, with a mean of 08.47 and a standard deviation of 03.18. The relatively high coefficient of variation (37.54%) indicates lower consistency in educational attainment. A vast majority (75.00%) fell within the medium educational category, while 21.00 % had low education and only 04.00% possessed higher education. This indicates that the farming population is largely dominated by low to moderately educated farmers. The negligible representation of highly educated individuals in contract farming may be attributed to their scepticism about

Proper preprocessing helps in improving the quality of the data, which in turn enhances the performance of machine learning models. Smoothening VIS-NIR spectra enhances signal quality by reducing noise, crucial for better spectral data interpretation. Key methods include Savitzky-Golay and moving average filters, wavelet transform (WT), and frational derivatives.
Savitzky-Golay Filter: The Savitzky-Golay filter is widely used for smoothing spectral data. It preserves the original shape and features of the signal better than simple averaging filters.Savitzky-Golay Filter fits low-degree polynomials to successive subsets of data points using linear least squares, effectively preserving the signal’s original shape and features, making it ideal for spectroscopy. Moving Average:Moving Average is a simple method that reduces random noise by averaging neighboring data points. While effective, it can sometimes blur sharp features.
Wavelet Transform: Wavelet transform is effective for denoising spectral data, especially when dealing with non-stationary signals.Wavelet Transform (WT) decomposes spectral data into multiple scales, providing both time and frequency information. It is particularly useful for identifying features like peaks and trends. WT includes Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT). Fourier Transform Filtering: Fourier transform can be used to remove highfrequency noise components from the spectra.
Median Filter: Median filtering is useful for removing outliers and preserving edges in the spectral data.
Fractional derivative:Fractional derivative generalizes traditional derivatives to non-integer (fractional) orders, allowing for arbitrary order derivatives. This provides a flexible, nuanced approach to modeling and analyzing complex, nonlinear, or memory-dependent behaviors.

1. Introduction Plants naturally contain compounds called phytochemicals. Due to their numerous therapeutic applications, these phytochemicals are becoming more and more well-known these days. Phytochemicals are essential in the fight against a variety of illnesses, including cancer, arthritis, and asthma. These phytochemicals have no side effects like pharmaceutical compounds do. Because the phytochemicals treat illnesses without harming people, they can also be referred to as “man-friendly medicines.” The primary topics of this study are phytochemical collection, extraction, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. In order to protect themselves against herbivores, many plants secrete chemical substances. Examples of therapeutic plants that include the main groups of pharmacologically active phytochemicals are provided below. Weeds that contain phytochemicals, like chickweed, dandelion, and nettle, are frequently found surrounding human settlements. Many phytochemicals, including curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, and resveratrol are pan-assay interference compounds and are not useful in drug discovery.

Additionally, blockchain technology is emerging as a solution for enhancing transparency and traceability in the food supply chain, ensuring that consumers have access to safe and ethically produced food.

Rainfall in India, is a phenomenon that is not just a meteorological event but the very lifeline of the subcontinent, profoundly shaping its landscapes, agriculture, and, most importantly for our study, its diverse aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries they support. India experiences a unique and dominant rainfall regime driven primarily by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of wind patterns. The arrival, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution of this rainfall have farreaching consequences for the availability of freshwater, the health of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and the productivity of coastal and marine environments. For aspiring fisheries professionals in India, a thorough understanding of the patterns and vagaries of Indian rainfall is indispensable.
Consider the sheer diversity of aquatic habitats across India, from the snowfed rivers of the Himalayas to the monsoonal wetlands of the Gangetic plains, the brackish backwaters of Kerala, and the vast coastline. The characteristics and productivity of each of these systems are intricately linked to the patterns of rainfall they receive. The monsoon replenishes rivers and groundwater, sustains agricultural practices that can impact water quality, influences the nutrient flow into coastal waters, and can even trigger crucial life cycle events for many aquatic species (Fig. 7.1).

Introduction 
The evolution of digital governance in the 21st century has significantly redefined how public institutions function, deliver services, and interact with citizens. This transformation, enabled and accelerated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), is not merely technical, but deeply institutional, cultural, and political. As states move toward more digitized, networked, and citizen-responsive systems, drawing upon theoretical frameworks that help explain, interpret, and evaluate these complex dynamics becomes essential. Theories provide the conceptual scaffolding necessary for analyzing the design, implementation, outcomes, and unintended consequences of digital governance practices. At its core, a theory systematically explains a phenomenon or set of phenomena. It involves a coherent set of interrelated concepts, assumptions, and propositions that define causal relationships and offer predictive insights (Kerlinger, 2000). According to Prasad et al. (2017), theory represents a systematic grouping of interdependent concepts that offer a framework to organize existing knowledge, explain observable events, and predict yet-unobserved outcomes. Hollander (1967) adds that theories contain one or more functional statements or propositions that articulate relationships between variables to account for empirical realities. Central to any theory are concepts, the building blocks that articulate the causal linkages and assumptions within a conceptual system. When structured together, these elements form a deductive framework for reasoning and explanation. In sum, theory allows us to understand what is happening in digital governance and why, how, and with what implications. Digital governance, distinct from narrower terms like e-government or e-governance, is a multi-layered process involving the reconfiguration of power, the redesign of institutions, the engagement of diverse stakeholders, and the transformation of public value creation in a digitally mediated environment. It encompasses dimensions of public administration, information systems,

Saffron, the legendary crop of Kashmir, India, is an important food adjunct, that is, food flavorant and food colorant, and, is also reputed to possess several medicinal properties. The recorded accounts of saffron cultivation in Kashmir dates back to AD 550, nearly four centuries earlier than its recorded cultivation in Spain by the Arabs around AD 961. The saffron fields, from mid-October to early November, when saffron plants are in full bloom, on a moonlit night, present a wonderful sight and a good source of fascination to many tourists. But, surprisingly, it’s cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir in India does not seem to be based on scientific research and the growers have some superstitions, notions and methods of their own. Therefore, saffron-growing areas are those very localities where they have been since ancient times (550 AD), and is also their out-dated methods of curing, drying and packing, which can be improved considerably. Over 100 species of saffron genus Crocus are distributed worldwide, but, only Crocus sativus has received some attention and is cultivated in several countries. Saffron consists of dried tri-lobed stigmas of Crocus sativus, which is a bulbous perennial with globular corms. The plant is only 15-25cm tall, native of Southern Europe and cultivated in the Mediterranean countries, in particular, Spain, Austria, France, Greece, besides England, Turkey, India (in Jammu and Kashmir State, an Indian Union territory), and The People’s Republic of Iran. It is also grown in the Orient. True Saffron must not be confused with either meadow saffron (Colchicum autumnale Linn; Family: Liliaceae) or Safflower or Bastard Saffron (Carthamus tinctorium; Family: Compositae), which are

15.2 Hydro Forming
The word “hydroforming” describes the metal forming procedures where the material blank is deformed by hydraulic pressure. There are difficulties with sealing, pressurization schedule, anticontamination in the pressure system, and cleaning the workpiece and equipment after direct contact between the pressurized fluid and the blank material. In certain instances, the necessary hydroforming pressure may surpass 350 MPa, contingent upon the setup of the process and the thickness of the material. Hydroforming procedures are divided into two categories, viz. sheet metal hydroforming and tube hydroforming, depending on the geometry of the blank.
15.2.1 Sheet Metal Hydro forming
When it comes to tooling, sheet metal hydro forming is less complicated than typical sheet metal stamping. Only one side of the tooling, typically the lower side needs to be created for the sheet metal hydro forming process. The hydro forming

2.1 Introduction 
The world is encountering a severe power and environmental crisis. Adopting sustainable progress is the best means to protect our environment and maximise the use of available resources. The urgent issues, encompassing diverse types of pollution and carbon emissions, highlight the necessity to shift towards renewable energy sources. This shift is essential for diminishing our dependence on fossil fuels, addressing the on-going challenges regarding climate change, and confronting the exhaustion of current energy reserves. Furthermore, mitigating water pollution is an essential component of ensuring ecological sustainability [1,2]. Water supplies are rapidly being contaminated due to diverse contaminants including heavy metals, and harmful chemicals. While industrialization is critical for societal growth, it is critical to recognise the negative environmental consequences caused by numerous processes that emit hazardous substances. Improper disposal of untreated wastewater can negatively impact ecology and biodiversity [3]. As a result, it is critical to use environmentally friendly and sustainable treatment methods that adhere to green development principles. This will bolster industrialization efforts while upholding water pollution safeguards for recovery and reuse. Given the prevailing energy crisis, traditional wastewater treatment facilities have become financially unsustainable due to their high energy consumption. Traditional wastewater treatment is both costly and demands substantial energy resources. Furthermore, these approaches fall short of efficiently eradicating recalcitrant organic waste, heavy metals, and other persistent contaminants. Moreover, many of these treatment processes require regeneration. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has emerged as an ecofriendly treatment option capable of effectively eliminating stubborn organic pollutants and heavy metals over the long term. Microbial fuel cells are chosen over other current treatment methods because to their reduced energy needs and lower chemical usage [4,5]. In addition to lowering energy usage, MFCs possess the ability to produce ample bioenergy, which can help alleviate the energy shortage. This provides a cleaner alternative for generating renewable energy in favour of sustainable development and environmental protection as depicted in Figure 2.1.

Augmented energy demand as well as impacts of employment of fossil coals on human health and environment, stresses and imposes the need to lessen the use of conventional fuels or replace them. Equally, global warming has stretched to a distressing level due to many diverse anthropogenic actions leading to increased pollution. The alternate energy sources are desirable that might be the conspicuous and sustainable approach of enabling environmental remediation, besides meeting the global energy call (Grosser et al 2016, Kanchanasutha et al 2016). A potential solution is generation of Biofuels, either conventional biofuels produced from agricultural crops or advanced biofuels produced from wastes, inedible crops or forestry products (Sreedevi Sarsan et al 2021). Advanced biofuels production especially by the utilization of agricultural and animal wastes using new technologies and processes are gaining increased interest among researchers and general public all over the world. Food waste, municipal trash, animal waste and other wastes can all be utilised as feedstocks to create biogas, a clean and sustainable energy source and thus may be the ideal replacement for traditional energy sources. The raw biomass may be converted into fuel products like biogas by briquetting, gasification, and anaerobic digestion, among other processes (Deepanraj et al 2015). In comparison to landfills, incinerations, and composting processes, anaerobic digestion (AD) is suggested as an inexpensive and environmentally benign technique for the generation of renewable energy (Van Forest et al 2012; Nishio et al 2007; Capson-Tojo et al 2016; Xu, F et al 2018; Cha, M et al 2020). The production of energy-rich biogas and alleviation of issues related to the removal of organic waste are all achieved by anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic solids (Sonakya et al 2001). This is since AD is a highly energy-efficient and ecologically benign technique. In an atmosphere devoid of oxygen, the AD system uses anaerobic microbes to transform the naturally occurring substances in the biomass into biogas. The primary byproduct of AD, biogas, has a methane content of roughly 50-70% by volume and 30- 40% atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) when feedstocks are digested under anaerobic circumstances, with small levels of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) (0.1-3% v/v), humidity, and other trace pollutants also present (Sahota et al. 2018). The generation of biogas is known to be influenced by factors such as waste types, pretreatment procedures, the microorganisms or enzymes added, operation circumstances and design of the digestors (Mao et al 2015).

A good understanding of soil-water-plant relationships is the foundation for understanding irrigation concepts.
Water reaches the soil through irrigation, precipitation, or from groundwater drawn up into the root zone through “capillary action”. To be available to plants, it must be held by the soil strongly enough so it is not lost to gravity before the plant gets it, but not so strongly that the plant cannot extract it from the soil. At the same time, the roots must have sufficient aeration to function properly.
Roots are responsible for obtaining almost all of the plant’s water and nutrients. These substances move through the soil during and after irrigation/fertigation and rainfall. In addition, root systems are continually growing and branching to seek out water and nutrients. Root hairs are very fine structures that extend at right angles to the roots. Water and nutrients predominantly enter the root system via specialized cells near the tips of root hairs.
The xylem is the cellular pathway through the plant that transports water from the roots to the leaves for use in photosynthesis and to cool the plant by evaporation. The process by which water vapour is released to the atmosphere by the leaves and other parts of a living plant, resulting in evaporative cooling, is called transpiration. The xylem also transports water and nutrients to other parts of the plant. In a living plant, the xylem is completely filled with water, just as the veins and arteries of the human circulatory system are filled with blood. The plant needs a continual replacement of water lost through transpiration to keep the xylem full of water, and of course, this has to be accomplished without an organ analogous to a human heart. Chromophore centres, which are responsible for color, consistof various functional groups like azo, anthraquinone,methine, nitro, arylmethane, carbonyl, and others. Additionally, substituents that either donateor withdraw electrons to enhance or create the color of these chromophoresare called auxochromes. Common examples of auxochromes include amine,carboxyl, sulfonate, and hydroxyl groups. There are three methods for dyingtextile materials: batch, continuous, and semi-continuous. Thekind of materialincluding yarn, fabric, fiber, clothing, and fabric structure as well as the generalfiber size of the dye lot, type, and quality standards of the dyed fabric, all playa role in determining the dyeing method used. The increasing capabilities of Large Language Models have created strong demand for real-time AI services, but their computational complexity makes low-latency deployment difficult on conventional systems. Transformer models require substantial memory, high computational throughput and efficient data movement, creating challenges for mobile devices, embedded systems, edge platforms and latency-sensitive applications. This chapter introduces hardware–software co-design as an integrated strategy for addressing these challenges. Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a very important horticultural crop which fetches considerable foreign exchange to India. The crop is a native of Brazil and was introduced in India by the Portuguese during 16^th Century. It is grown in India, Brazil, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mozambique, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other tropical Asian and African countries. The crop is grown within the latitudinal belt of 27°N and 28°S of the equator experiencing a tropical temperature for its growth and development (Rao and Gopakumar, 1994). The trend in productivity has a phenomenal bearing to the distance from the equator. The world production of cashew is estimated to be around 20.8 lakh tonnes. The global productivity level of cashew is 690 kg/ha. Since 2000, the world raw cashewnut production registered an increase of 40 per cent. India’s share in the world raw cashewnut production accounts to about 25 per cent. In recent times, India is facing tight competition from Vietnam and Indonesia in international cashew trade. Since its introduction in the Country, cashew has well adapted to the Indian climatic conditions and is grown in the East and West Coasts of India. Now, India is the largest producer, processor, consumer and exporter of cashew in the world (Bhat, 2009 a). 1. INTRODUCTION

There is increasing recognition that information and knowledge are now at the heart of socio-economic development. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and broadband are enabling tools and infrastructures for accessing, developing, using and sharing information and knowledge. Accordingly, Irish Government policy has focused on promoting the adoption and use of ICT in the home, in education and in the workplace.

There have been significant increases in levels of engagement with ICT in Ireland in recent years. Almost two-thirds of all adults now have access to the internet, compared with only 1 in 20 in 1996, while four out of every five adults own a mobile phone. This chapter critiques the level of adoption of ICTs among the farming community and compares this with levels of adoption by the general population. It analyses the use of ICTs by the government and by public and private extension agencies in Ireland and identifies constraints to their adoption.

The Ministry of Agriculture has been among the most enthusiastic supporters of the Government of Ireland’s policy by promoting the adoption and use of ICTs among its clients. It sought to facilitate easier transmission of information to clients, to minimise the collection of new data by using existing electronic information and to integrate with clients’ own systems. These projects are described in this chapter.

The use of ICTs by the public extension system is also critiqued; it has been innovative in using ICTs to disseminate information to its clients and the use of mobile telephony has been particularly effective. Internet based services to deliver online training and advisory information have also been developed and are critiqued.

1. INTRODUCTION

Sudan lays close to the east-centre of Africa between Latitudes 4° and 2° and longitude 22° and 28° east. It is the largest country in African continent (8.3 per cent) and Arab world and the ninth largest in the world (1.75) covering 2.59 million square kilometers of twenty six states (El Mustafa, 2005). It shares borders with Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central Africa, Zaire, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. It is a criterion for absolute continent in terms of the extent and variety of vast agricultural lands, vast agricultural and pastoral country with rich cultural diversity. It homes about forty million people, seventy five per cent of which inhabit rural areas, speaking over a hundred and thirty indigenous languages and dialects. The country is a gentle sloping land with the exception of Jebel Marra Massif, Red Sea hills, Ingessena hills and the Nuba Mountains (Ahmed et al., 2004).

The Nile and its tributaries traverse it for about 900 km. The rainfall ranges from less than 50 mm in the northern desert to more than 1500 mm in the tropical rain forest in the south.

In general, the soils include aridsols (sand dunes and sandy soils), aridisols and vertisols (clay pockets in the valleys) in the North, vertisols in the central and southern clay plains and oxisols in the south. Variations in rainfall, vegetation and soils resulted in the formation of seven main ecological zones classified as follows: desert (0-75 mm, 28.1 per cent,), semi-desert (75-300 mm, 19 per cent), low rainfall savanna on sand (300-400 mm, 26.6 per cent), low rainfall savanna on clay (400-800 mm, 13.3 per cent), high rainfall savanna (800-1300 mm, 9.5 per cent), Montana vegetation region (800-1000 mm, 0.3 per cent) and flood region (800-1000 mm, 3.2 per cent) which embedded in twenty six states.

Plants take up nitrogen from soil either in the form of nitrate or ammonia. Nitrate taken by plants is reduced by nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase enzymes. They catalyze step-wise reduction of nitrate to nitrite and nitrite to ammonia. Ammonia occupies the key position in nitrogen metabolism for the synthesis of organic nitrogen. Glutamic acid dehydrogenase, GOGAT and GS are important enzymes which are involved in the conversion of ammonia into glutamic acid, a primary amino acid. The ?-amino group of several amino acids is formed as a result of transamination reaction through transaminase/ aminotransferase enzymes. The word environment is derived from the French verb environner, which means “encircle” or “surround”. Thus, our environment can be defined as the physical, chemical and biological world that surrounds us, as well as the complex of social and cultural conditions affecting an individual or community. This broad definition includes the natural world and the technological environment, as well as the cultural and social contexts that shape human lives.

The earth is the only known planet habited by man and other life forms, plants and vegetation. Man and nature have lived together and so long as man’s wants were in conformity with nature, there was no problem. But unfortunately, man’s ambition for limitless enjoyment and comfort has led him towards the exploitation of nature’s wealth so indiscriminately and so shamelessly as to reduce nature’s capacity for self stabilization. The indiscriminate exploitation of nature over centuries has created numerous environmental problems. Man’s voracious appetite for resources and his desire to conquer nature has put him on collision course with environment. The demands of his explosive technological society impose intense stress on the state of equilibrium with the environment.

Ecology is the branch of biological science concerned with the relationships and interactions between living organisms and their physical surroundings or environment. Living organisms and the environment with which they exchange materials and energy together make up an ecosystem, which is the basic unit of ecology. An ecosystem includes biotic components – the living plants and animals and abiotic components the air, water, minerals and soil that constitute the environment. A third and essential component of most natural ecosystems is energy, usually in the form of sunlight.

Familiar examples of land based or terrestrial ecosystems include forests, deserts, jungles and medows. Water based or aquatic ecosystems include streams, rivers, lakes, marshes and estuaries. There is no specific limitation on the size or boundaries of an ecosystem. A small pond can be studied as a separate ecosystem, as can a desert comprising hundreds of square kilometers. Even the entire surface of earth can be viewed as an ecosystem; the term biosphere is often used in this context.

Abstract

Anaerobic microorganisms occur in oxygen-free environments as they possess biomolecules and metabolic processes that have adapted to sustain them in the stressed environments. These biomolecules and metabolic processes are harnessed and employed in various biotechnological applications. Anaerobes are abundant in various ecological niches such as freshwater or marine sediments, subsurface aquifers, deep thermal vents etc. where, in the absence or limitation of oxygen, they utilise reduced ions such as nitrate, sulphate, ferric, carbonate and certain organic compounds like degrading organic matter, fatty acids or alcohols as electron acceptors during respiration/fermentation to produce more or fewer reduced products such as, alcohols, ammonia, organic acids, hydrogen and carbon dioxide as the oxidised product. Diversity of substrates that can be fermented and the wide range of products that can be formed make anaerobic processes useful in biotechnological applications. Their substrate versatility and flexibility, for example, they can utilize simple sugars as well as many of them can utilise complex renewable biomass make their biotechnological applications sustainable and environment friendly. Anaerobes have been employed in food, chemical and material industries for the production of food items, preservative, additives, chemical intermediates, solvents, catalysts and polymers. They find widespread usage in energy sector for generation of various kinds of biofuels that can mitigate our reliance on non-renewable sources for fuel production. An emerging aspect of anaerobic biotechnology is waste valorization that involves treatment of any kind of waste (industrial, municipal, agricultural, pharmaceutical), where organic fraction of the waste is converted into valuable products. Anaerobes play key role in maintaining the global cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, and also facilitate bioremediation by breakdown of persistent compounds. Lately, role of anaerobes in medicine and health care sector is widely explored as they are found to produce several bacteriocins, antibiotics, immunomodulators, vitamins and anti-tumor compounds. Some of the anaerobes have also been employed as probiotics. In the present chapter, we discussed these and many more biotechnological applications of anaerobes in white, green, red and blue biotechnology.

As we have seen how artificial Intelligence can be useful in agriculture but the nest question always come in mind is that from where and how we can start to learn and what are the model of learning an artificial Intelligence. As Artificial Intelligence is a huge part of Computer Science which means we need an language as medium to perform it and we always prefer Python for that which is very dynamic and easy to learn. In this chapter we will learn about python basics so that in further implementation of artificial Intelligence it will be helpful to us.

I. Introduction

Python is a remarkable language that can claim to be easy and strong. You will be amazed to see how simple it is not to focus on the language you are programming, but on solving the problem. Guido van Rossum was the creator of the Python language which is named after the BBC show “Monty Python’s flying Circus”.

Python is formally introduced as:

“Python is an easy to learn, powerful programming language. It has efficient high-level data structures and a simple but effective approach to object-oriented programming. Python’s elegant syntax and dynamic typing, together with its interpreted nature, make it an ideal language for scripting and rapid application development in many areas on most platforms.”

Abstract

Malaria is a widespread disease in the developing world, known to mankind since primeval times. It exists over hundreds countries of the world. Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite and cause disease in over 30 crores people annually and kills approximately 10 lakhs people worldwide. Plasmodium protozoan species which causes malaria can be differentiated into four species viz. P. malariae, P. falciparum, P. vivax, and P. ovale. Among all these four species P. falciparum parasite has got resistance to all common antimalarial drugs available in the market; therefore it is a devastating strain of Plasmodium causing of serious disease and death. The rising resistance of existing remedy based on quinoline is a key provider to the re-emergence of malaria as a main public health difficulty and its widen to fresh locations and populations. Therefore, In this compilation, an effort is made to compile clinical features of malaria, life cycle of Plasmodium sp., different classes of antimalarial drugs and their mechanism of actions and recent advances in target based discovery and recent development in artemisinin research especially different kinds of artemisinin derivatives and new structural classes of antimalarial agents. We have also reviewed new leads discovered as antimalarial from natural products where we have possible to see new lead in near future.

Mensuration is derived from Latin word mensura which means measure. It means measurement of length, mass, time, etc. It is an art and science of locating, measuring and calculating the length of lines, areas of planes, and volumes of solids.

Forest mensuration is one of the most fundamental disciplines within forest and related sciences. It concentrates on trees and forests or potentially forested locations and deals with the measurement of trees and stands and the analysis of the resultant information. Forest mensuration also includes measuring or calculating growth and change in trees and forests. Forest mensuration thus may be defined as the art and science of providing the quantitative information about trees and forest stands necessary for forest management, planning and research. Chaturvedi and Khanna (1986) defined forest mensuration as a branch of forestry which deals with the determination of dimensions (diameter, height, volume, etc.), form, age and increment of single trees, stands or whole woods, either standing or after felling. According to the Society of American Foresters, forest mensuration is the determination of dimensions, form, weight, growth, and age of trees individually or collectively, and of the dimensions of their products (Helms, 1998). It is a tool that provides facts about the forest crops or individual trees to sellers, buyers, planners, managers and researchers.

Forest mensuration provides quantitative information regarding forest resources that will allow making reasonable decisions on its density, use and management. Forest mensuration serves the following objects

Multipurpose trees and shrubs are defined as all woody perennials that are purposefully grown to provide more than one significant contribution to the production and/or service functions of a land-use system that they occupy. In agroforestry systems, different species of trees and shrubs can be planted with many types of crops in a variety of patterns. Thus, it is required to know about the methods of propagation and nursery raising, planting and other silvicultural management practices along with the diverse uses of multipurpose trees and shrubs of tropical and subtropical areas before their selection for forestry and agroforestry activities. It is important to select the most suitable tree species since it is not easy to replace them once they have been planted.

MANGIUM (Acacia mangium)

Acacia mangium is a single-stemmed evergreen tree that grows to 25-35 m in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. The bole is usually straight, often fluted near the base, free of branches for up to half its height. Mangium is native to Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. However, it tolerates varied site conditions and has adaptability to different planting objectives. Mangium shows most vigorous growth on well-drained, fertile soils in high rainfall areas in the humid tropics. It is valued for its rapid growth and has been planted throughout the humid tropics and is a major plantation species in the Asia-Pacific. Provenances from Papua New Guinea consistently show better growth in height and diameter.

Popularly the term management is used to refer to the group of managerial personnel of an enterprise. But the use of the term management in this sense is not correct, because the managerial personnel of an enterprise are usually designated as ‘managers’, ‘executives’ or administrators. Strictly speaking the term management refers to functional concept of management. Management refers to the sum total of all those functions or activities, which relate to the laying down of policies, plans and purposes, securing men, money, machinery needed for the achievement of the organisational objectives, putting all of them into operation and supervising and checking their performances in order to ensure the productive use of human and material resources for the maximum benefit or profit of the organisation, its employees and society in general.

Management is the sum total of five principal functions namely planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. The functional areas of management include: a) Financial management, b) Personnel management, c) material management, d) Production management, e) marketing management and f) Office management.

Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act-2001 (PPVFRA-2001) was enacted by government of India in 2001 to create a sui generis system of providing a legal framework as an IPR mechanism to protect the varieties of crop plants in India along with grant of breeders’ and farmers’ rights in the interest of all the stakeholders and also to comply with WTO guidelines to which India is a legal signatory. The salient features of this act are as follows.

The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act-2001, Act no. 53 of 2001, (30th october, 2001)

This act is in place to provide for the establishment of an effective system for protection of plant varieties, the rights of farmers and plant breeders and to encourage the development of new varieties of plants. It recognizes and protects the rights of the farmers in respect of their contribution made at any time in conserving; improving and making available plant genetic resources for the development of new plant varieties; it encourages accelerated agricultural development in the country; it protects plant breeders’ rights to stimulate investment for research and development, both in the public and private sector, for the development of new plant varieties; it facilitates the growth of the seed industry in the country which will ensure the availability of high quality seeds and planting material to the farmers. To give effect to the aforesaid objectives, it is necessary to undertake measures for the protection of the rights of farmers and plant breeders; as India, has ratified the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights should, inter alia, make provision for giving effect to sub-paragraph (b) of paragraph 3 of article 27 in Part II of the said Agreement relating to protection of plant varieties. Accordingly, this act is in place.

These changes have shifted the focus of food packaging from the basic function of containment to extending shelf life.
