7.1. Summary and Conclusion
In its recent move to attaining sustainable development goals through revamping agriculture, ICAR has focused on achieving health and nutritional status through agriculture. In doing this a database and quality information on health, hygiene and nutrition of rural women have become an imperative. Health, hygiene and nutrition are organically connected to each other. One cannot be achieved without the others. The present study has delved into the complex interactions and interrelationship between a set of 13 exogenous variables and another set of 5 consequent variables. A score of 70 rural women have been selected from Bilkumari village of Nadia district by following both random and non-random sampling methods. The stepwise regression analysis analyses for different dependent variables depict that the variables family size (x3), income per year (x4), distance from work place (x6), height (x7), weight (x8), BMI (x9), hip circumference (x12), waist to hip ratio (x13) have been recorded as to exert substantive functional impact on health, hygiene and nutrition of rural women. The factor analysis elicits the fact that instead of 18 exogenous and consequent variables together there have been 4 factors as extracted by calculating the factor loading. These factors are- health ecology, physical status, family ecology and strategic location. Sometimes we are moving in a wrong direction by concluding that if food and calorie are made available for the rural women, the health and nutrition will be achieved. The study has identified that unless proper understanding of health, hygiene, nutrition and health hazards is being build up, no external supply and services can solve the problem of malnutrition and health hazards. Thus, the study has generated huge pool of policy implications after being supported by plethora of far evidences, the output of this empirical research.

7.1. Summary
The planet rise at this moment cannot endure and conjure up any further stress and distress created by un-mindful modernization of agriculture. This situation has gone further complex with the unabated rate of urbanization. The natural resources which looked plenty some 50 years back, now is coming up something scant and degraded. We have to protect this planet; hence, we have to protect our agriculture by placing ecological resilience with its perfect balance and dynamics. In doing so, we need to manage and recycle energy, water, and biodiversity in such a way that the operating agro-ecosystem can perform for another centuries. This is a herculean task, it will only be possible when farmers and other citizens are participating elegantly and equally into the process, because farmers are not producing food for their own, rather they are feeding the entire civilization. Every year 15-20 tonnes of top soils are being eroded, the highest anytime; the sea level is rising at the rate 5-10 mm again it has become highest over the last decades and the prediction for rate of changes in rainfall and temperature contributing to global warming has been accelerate like anything. In addition to this, we need to feed 950 crores of population by 2050, while lands are getting fragmented, resources are fragile, and water is getting increasingly contaminated. Thus, CA is the only option to create a perfect balance between productivity with increase of ecological resilience, even within the cropping system by introducing crop diversification with leguminous crops and this is specially so when the biodiversity is also getting eroded. Water harvesting is the need of the hour as we can make our farm more energy parsimonious, we have direct whatever crop residues are produced in the soil echelon and making this concept a revolution into a reality we have to go in a massive way with bring awareness, creating policies, and mobilizing community to make our agriculture ever- green and ever- resilient.
On this context the present research has been conducted with the following objectives:

Twenty four crossbred cows in second to fourth lactation with most probable production ability (MPPA) of average approximately 2300 liter milk production per lactation for each group were selected from the herd maintained at RCDP on Cattle. The experimental animals were randomly divided into four treatment groups of 6 in each. Control group (T₀) was fed with 2/3 DM through roughages (2/3 from dry roughages and 1/3 from green roughages) + 1/3 DM from concentrate mixture (Conc. Mix includes 20% GNC (untreated). T₁ group was feed with 2/3 DM through roughages (2/3 from dry roughages and 1/3 from green roughages) + 1/3 DM from concentrate mixture (Conc. Mix includes 20% GNC treated with formaldehyde (FA) @ 1.0 g FA/100g CP).

The contribution of dairy sector in the Indian economy has tremendous impact on the country’s GDP. India being the world’s highest milk producing country, dairy industry has a major role in changing the twin problem of the nation that is poverty and unemployment. Dairy sector also involves the under privileged group, especially the dairy farm women. There are many success stories regarding the life changing experiences gained by the farm women, who had taken dairy farming as a means to sustain their livelihood. In the area of gender equality, dairy sector has proved to be a women centric enterprise. Most of the activities pertaining to dairy farming are mostly carried out by the farm women. The dairy farming activities carried out by the farm women are tedious and in major cases their contribution remains unnoticed. They are usually carrying out activities, where most of their energy is drained, resulting in drudgery. Matters related to decision making, their opinion about adopting new technologies, starting an enterprise are not given importance by their family members. This leads to a greater setback in the emergence of success of dairy sector. Therefore, empowerment of farm women in dairy sector is one of the important criteria for the dairy industry to reach a greater height and for overall development of nation.

7.1. Summary of Findings

This study dealing with the examination of various advantages of commodity futures market to farmers, RMC traders and RMC officials along with the level of awareness about this market among these selected beneficiaries is presented in brief. This chapter summarizes the findings. It begins with the interpretation of the significant findings derived from both secondary and primary analysis. This is followed by suggestions, the section on major contributions of the present study to the existing body of knowledge, on the role of commodity futures market in agricultural development of the state.

Agriculture is a fundamental human activity that depends intrinsically on natural processes, including soil fertility, water recycling, and pollination, and both nature and agriculture are increasingly suffering the negative impacts of climate change (EEA, 2019). At the same time, unsustainable agriculture also poses a major threat to biodiversity (Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2014), negatively affects the state of our soil and water, and is an important contributor to climate change (Jia et al., 2019).

Present work was aimed to determine the antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of active crude extracts of selected cyanobacterial species. Nine cyanobacterial strains viz. Anabaena variabilis, A. fertilissima, Nostoc muscorum, N. punctiforme, N. linckia, N. commune, Spirulina platensis, Westiellopsis prolifica and Hapalosiphon sp. belonging to family; Nostocaceae, Oscillatoriaceae and Stigonemataceae were selected from the herbarium of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and maintained in BG-11 growth medium throughout the study in the laboratory.

This study examines how various socio-economic variables affect migration distance and happiness among toto-pullers in farm ecology, analysing 15 independent variables and their relationships with six dependent variables. The distribution patterns show moderate variability in family size, income, and material possessions, with notable variability in factors such as migration costs and water scarcity. Correlation analyses reveal that higher education, income, and land holdings are negatively correlated with migration distance, while larger family size, older average age, and better housing conditions correlate positively with longer migration distances. Regression analysis indicates that family size significantly influences migration distance, while higher education levels are associated with shorter distances. Stepwise regression confirms family size as a key predictor, explaining 20.7% of the variance in migration distance. Path analysis highlights that larger families directly increase migration distance, whereas higher education leads to shorter distances. In terms of happiness, material possession, house type, and income from livestock are positively correlated, suggesting that better living conditions significantly enhance happiness. Conversely, higher migration costs and lower education and income levels are negatively correlated with happiness. Overall, the findings underscore the critical roles of family size, socio-economic conditions, and material factors in shaping migration patterns and happiness, indicating areas for targeted interventions to improve migration outcomes and overall well-being among toto-pullers. The stepwise regression analysis identifies several key predictors of unhappiness, migration benefits, push factors, and pull factors. Material possession (x7) emerges with a negative coefficient of -0.224 and a t-value of -1.725, suggesting that while higher material possessions are somewhat linked to reduced unhappiness, this effect is not statistically significant. In contrast, total annual income from livestock per capita (x12) significantly reduces unhappiness, with a coefficient of -0.360 and a t-value of -3.826, reflecting a robust negative relationship. Family size (x1) also significantly influences unhappiness, with a coefficient of -0.299 and a t-value of -2.537, indicating that larger family sizes are associated with greater unhappiness. Aim: To perform Sumpner’s test (back-to-back test) on a pair of similar transformer and thus calculating efficiency of operation.

Sumpner’s test givens an effective way, to actually see the performance of transformers of large rating without loading them, at full load. This back to back test allows heat run test so that temperature rise and its rate can be analysed.

The two identical transformers are connected back to back as shown in figure such that their polarities are in opposition. To do this, two terminals of the secondary winding are connected as shown and the voltages between the other two are measured by exciting primaries.

Introduction

The Heliantheae are the third-largest tribe in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). With some 190 genera and nearly 2500 recognized species, only the tribes Senecioneae and Astereae are larger. The name is derived from the genus Helianthus, which is Greek for sunflower.

This is one of the large and predominantly flourishing flowering botanical groups occurring in almost all parts of the world. Except for three species in South America, all other Helianthus species are native to North America and Central America i.e., Southwest United States-Mexico area (Heiser, 1976). The common name, “sunflower”, typically refers to the popular annual species Helianthus annuus, or the common sunflower, whose round flower heads in combination with the ligules look like the sun. This and other species, notably Jerusalem artichoke (H. tuberosus), are cultivated in temperate regions and some tropical regions as food crops for humans, cattle, and poultry, and as ornamental plants.

The species H. annuus typically grows during the summer, post summer rainy season and later in post-rainy season too with the peak growth during pre-summer season with temperatures ranging from 28^oC to 35^oC in India.

Domestication of sunflower started around 4,000 years ago in Eastern North America by the native tribes of American continent (Blackman et al., 2011). The current annual oilseed yielding sunflower was cultivated originally by local inhabitant tribes (Weiss, 2000), who used the seed as a source of food. The adaptations in annual sunflower to human cultivation include a dramatic increase in apical dominance, an increase in seed size, the loss of natural seed dispersal and seed dormancy, and the loss of self-incompatibility (Wills and Burke, 2007).

Sunflower was introduced as an oil seed crop in India in 1967. The crop is now widely cultivated in all parts of India and in any type of situation. Sunflower belongs to Compositae family and the cultivated species is Helianthus annus spp. macrocarpus. Apart from the edible oil species, there are non-oily types, other edible forms and ornaments. Helianthus tuberosus gives the edible tubers.

Diagnostic Symptoms
• Early symptoms of the disease are noticed forty days after sowing.
• Stem is usually infected at or near the soil line.
• Brownish lesion develops at the base of the stem and eventually girdles the plant. A white fan-like inoculum growth forms over the infected tissues and often radiates over the soil surface.
• Silky appearance of plants can be spotted from a distance and a row effect can be observed in heavily infected soil. Later the entire plant withers and dies.
• The lesion grows up the stem, destroying the cortical tissue and leaving the fibrous vascular strands as the tissues dry out.
• White cottony mycelium and mustard seed type sclerotial bodies are conspicuous on the affected stem near soil level. This also causes collar rot in the seedling stage (Fig.2).

The plants wilt at the time of grain fi lling stage. A light brown water soaked area is seen at the stem base. Sclerotia can be seen on the outer region of stalk when the plants get older. White mycelial growth with large sclerotial bodies is seen over the stem pith. The stem often breaks down at the point of infection.

A. Diseases

1. Anthracnose

Occurrence & severity status

The Anthracnose [Fig. 14 (A-B)], also called as ‘Stem-break’, is one of the most serious diseases of sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea ) in India. It occurs in all sunnhemp growing areas of India (Mitra 1934; Kempanna et al., 1960; Kundu, 1964; Kumar et al., 2016). Apart from India, its occurrence in several countries of South Tropical Africa, like, Rhodesia (Whiteside,1955), Zimbabwe, and other tropical countries including Trinidad and Tobago (Damm et al., 2009), was also noticed as a major disease (Purseglove, 1974). In many places, the disease is considered as the second most serious disease of sunnhemp, causing wilt and weakening of the stem.

Sunstroke results from direct heat rays of the sun. The victim may be mentally confused and complain of a bad headache. He may become delirious. His blood pressure may fall to a low level and the pulse become rapid and weak. An abnormal condition due to exposure to excessive heat.

The predisposing cause is anything, which lowers normal resistance; the chief of which are worry, excitement, mental or physical fatigue, alcoholic excesses, and lack of nourishment etc.

The exciting causes are prolonged exposure under the direct rays of the sun, unusual exertion in a hot, moist, sultry, breezeless atmosphere. The occupations, which furnish most of the cases, are breakers, boiler tenders, soldiers on the march, masons etc.

Different stages, or forms or different degrees of severity of the same condition have produced different results and been given different names, viz., heatstroke, sunstroke, heat exhaustion, insulation, thermic fever, heat prostration.

Abstract

Drying remained at the centre stage since the initiation of the food processing due to its promise to preserve agricultural products economically and add functionality to a food product unlike other thermal as well as non-thermal food processing operations. However, many existing drying techniques have their own limitations like nutrient loss, damage of the organoleptic quality, high cost etc. Therefore, research for better drying technologies is going on. Supercritical drying (SCD) is one such technology which utilizes higher dissolving power of super critical fluids (SCFs) to dry food products. The current chapter illustrates the mechanism of SCD as well as current state-of-art and promise of the drying technology. Also, some modelling approach of SCD has been included in the discussion to facilitate new designs and optimization of SCD for various food products.

Introduction
 
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the functional foods because they can provide physiological benefits additional to nutritional and energetic, as for instance, antihypertensive, antioxidant or anti-inflammatory [1]. A functional food can be defined as a food that produces a beneficial effect in one or more physiological functions, increases the welfare and/or decreases the risk of suffering a particular disease. Furthermore, new types of products, derived from food, called nutraceuticals have recently been developed. These products, usually employed as food supplements, are marketed as tablets and pills, and can provide important health benefits.

The phenomenon and behavior of supercritical fluid (SCF) has been the subject of research right from 1800's and suggestion of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) came in to exixtence in 1958. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) was first developed in 1960, and that time, it was considered as a science fiction chromatography and a revolutionary separation technique. But its reputation has slowly ebbed over the years and it is now moving forward by leaps and bounds as a stable analytical method with many advantages over the existing chromatographic methods. It is an unit operation that exploits the high dissolving power of fluids at temperature and pressurre above their critical values for extracting analytes from sample matrices.The first commercial packed column of SFC was made available in 1981 and the first commercial capillary column SFC instrument was introduced in 1985. Several refrences are useful for understanding the super critical fluid extraction and super critical fluid chromatography

2.1 Introduction

Food is one of the complex systems involving many constituents such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals. These all constituents are not present in the same relative proportion in every type of food and thus the foods are categorized and valued according to the presence of these constituents as protein rich foods, fat rich foods, etc. The specific type of food is in abundance with only one or at most two of these constituents and rest of the bulk is not valuable, commercially. So, if these active constituents which are present in the tissue surrounding inactive matrix, are separated, it is of great benefit with respect to increased purity, nutritive value, functional properties, reduction in volume, easy handling and transportation. On contrary some valuable food items contain undesirable constituents generally referred as anti-nutritional factors. Removal of these anti-nutritional factors enhances the food value and commercial utilization. Hence, the separation of phytochemicals and removal of anti-nutrients from the food matrices can be easily carried out by using a unit operation called as extraction.

Extraction involves the separation or isolation of active/desirable components of complex system viz., plant and animal tissues from the rest of inactive/undesirable components by using suitable means such as solvent or mechanical structure. The basic principle involved in the extraction process is partitioning of different components in accordance with the extracting agent. For example, in mechanical extraction, the partitioning is due to pressure and screen/apperature size where as in case of solvent extraction, the portioning of components from mixture takes place due to particular solubilizing power of solvent used.

Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) is an advanced extraction technology that provides an efficient and comparatively sustainable alternative to conventional solvent-based extraction. This chapter introduces the fundamental principles of supercritical fluids and explains the mechanism by which desirable compounds can be selectively extracted from food materials. It examines the use of SFE for recovering aroma compounds, essential oils, flavours, pigments, colours, antimicrobial compounds and valuable bioactive substances. Particular emphasis is placed on obtaining high-purity extracts while minimizing toxic solvent residues. The chapter also discusses industrial food applications, process advantages and limitations, highlighting the potential of SFE for developing cleaner, efficient and value-oriented food-processing and ingredient-recovery systems.

Etiology

It is caused by Staphylococci spp- characterized by superficial pyoderma in dogs. It is mainly due to exfoliative toxins of S? aureus.

Gross pathology

The lesion reveals cutaneous exfoliation, vesicles, pustules (Figure 6) and crust.

Etiology

Superficial pyoderma usually occurs in the epidermis and upper infundibulum of the hair follicle. It usually heals without scar formation and commonly caused by Gram positive cocci Staphylococcus spp., particularly exfoliative toxin of this species.

Abstract

Drying is a very important unit operation in food processing. Being an energy intensive unit operation, drying process demands improvement to make it energy efficient. Beside this operating conditions used in drying affect product quality substantially; however, traditional dryers do not allow enough flexibility to meet quality requirements for several products. This has resulted in development of number of new drying techniques, to cope with both energy efficiency and product quality.

Supervised classification is the technique to classify raster image in which prior information about the classes in the form of training sites is provided by the user. Training site represents a homogeneous area in a particular class. The spectral response pattern of training sites is used to classify the raster image.The pixels of raster imagewhich have spectral response pattern similar to that of training sites of a particular class are grouped in that class. As there is some variability in the spectral response pattern of a particular class, therefore, multiple training sites per class are taken for supervised classification. Supervised classification of raster images can be performed by various methods. Conventional methods include maximum likelihood classifier, minimum distance to mean classifier, and parallelepiped classifier. Now a days, machine learning algorithms are also gaining importance in this context. These classifying algorithms are first trained or calibrated using the data of training sites.This trained model is then validated on the independent datasets for accuracy assessment. If the accuracy of the developed model is of acceptable level, then that model is used for the classification of raster data.

In this chapter, we are going to discuss the execution of maximum likelihood classifier and few machine learning techniques for supervised classification of raster image in R software. The training sites used in this exercise are in the form of points shapefile. The raster image is classified into six classesi.e. built- up, fallow soil, riverine sand, salt-affected soil, vegetation, and water. For performing this exercise, first of all,set the working directory and import the required packages.

Abstract
Food insecurity and malnutrition are on the rise globally, impacting millions, especially in rural regions where extreme poverty and food insecurity are deeply rooted. Vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected. Producing foo  that meets dietary needs and ensuring its availability in the future is essential for sustainable development and food sustainability. Addressing the growing global food security concerns and supporting the increasing population requires the continual expansion of plant-based proteins’ significance. Legumes are excellent sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Legumes, with their high dietary fiber and low-fat content, help maintain body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, and provide important vitamins like folate, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and niacin (B3). Additionally, pulses contain various phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, phytates, lectins, tannins, saponins, oxalates, enzyme inhibitors, phytosterols, and antimicrobial peptides, which offer numerous potential health benefits. These phytochemicals exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-ulcerative properties. Incorporating legumes into agricultural systems can foster more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices. In developing countries, legumes are often used to supplement cereals or starchy foods to combat protein-energy malnutrition, as animal proteins tend to be expensive in these regions.

In contrast, a value chain focuses on a set of linked activities that add value to a product, connecting producers to processors and markets. Value chains prioritize cooperation among actors to produce high-quality products and generate equitable income for all participants. Unlike supply chains, which center on logistics and product movement, value chains also include the transfer of knowledge, finance, payments, and social capital to organize producers and communities. While supply chains begin at the point of production, value chains originate from the consumer perspective.
The Concept of Supply Chain in Agriculture
The supply chain concept is critical for addressing unique characteristics of agricultural produce, such as:

Key processes such as demand planning, transportation (including fleet management), inventory control, material handling, and order fulfillment all fall Munder the logistics umbrella. Supply chain logistics is the backbone of global trade, encompassing a wide-reaching network that includes transportation, warehousing, and inventory management systems. This vital aspect of business operations guarantees the efficient movement of products and services from manufacturers to end consumers, passing through various intermediaries along the way.
In today’s fast-paced and constantly changing business environment, understanding and optimizing supply chain logistics has become even more critical. Companies are under greater pressure to deliver products faster, more affordably, and with increased transparency.

Foodborne illness is a major concern and food manufacturers must implement strict quality control measures at every stage of the food supply chain. This includes testing and monitoring for pathogens, maintaining proper storage and transportation conditions, and ensuring that all equipment is cleaned and  disinfected to prevent contamination.
Another challenge is food waste. Food products have a limited shelf life and Managing inventory levels is essential to minimize waste and spoilage. Effective food supply chain management requires careful planning and coordination between suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to ensure that products are delivered to consumers before their expiration date.
Efficient management of logistics and transportation is another essential aspect of supply chain management. Food products often travel long distances before reaching consumers, and companies need to ensure that products are delivered to customers quickly and efficiently. This requires careful planning and coordination of transportation routes, scheduling, and delivery times to minimize delays and disruptions.

12.1 Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and procurement, conversion and all logistics management activities. Importantly, it also includes coordination and collaboration with channel partners, which can be suppliers, intermediaries, third party service providers, and customers. In essence, supply chain management integrates supply and demand management within and across companies.

India produces 146 million tons of vegetables (NHB report, 2011) and the total area under vegetable cultivation is around 8.5 million ha. Potato, tomato, onion, cabbage and brinjal account for around 60 per cent of the total vegetable production in terms of quantity. India’s annual fruit production is 75 million tons (NHB report, 2011) and the total area under fruit cultivation is around 6.3 million ha. The major Indian fruits are mango, banana, citrus fruits, apple, guava, papaya, pineapple, and grapes. Fresh fruits and vegetables play a vital role in Indian context and their marketing works as an influencing force in the economy. Though retailing of fresh fruit and vegetables is a low margin business, the market potential is very large in a country like India. This factor has attracted many corporates into this sector. Marketing of agricultural produce is different and more challenging than many industrial products because of the perishability, seasonality, and bulkiness. The very nature of small size of land holdings by the farmers, varied climatic conditions, production spread over wide geographical area, mainly in remote villages, diversified consumption patterns/habits of the Indian consumers and poor Supply Chain (SC) infrastructure makes marketing for fruits and vegetables more complicated. At the same time, Indian consumers demand fresh fruits and vegetables. Thus, Management plays a crucial role in marketing fruits and vegetables. Supply Chain efficiency not only helps in increased production and per capita consumption, but also contributes to economic development of the country. As a result, Supply Chain Management (SCM) throws both challenges and opportunities in marketing of fruits and vegetables. Efficient SCM in marketing, not only increases the profitability and efficiency of retailers, but also adds value to different stakeholders like cultivators (farmers), consolidators and consumers. Traditional Retail Model of fruit and vegetables is predominantly followed in unorganized retail sector. Players involved in this model are commission agents, auctioneers, wholesalers, traditional retailer of all type of formats family run ‘mom and pop’ stores, roadside shops, pavement shops and cart vendors apart from farmers and customers.

India is an agriculture based country where more than half of the population depends upon agriculture. Agriculture is a primary source of livelihood for about 58% of the population of the country. Indian agriculture sector contributes about 17% of Indian’s gross domestic product (GDP) and provide employment to 50% of the country workforce (DES, 2019). The diverse ecohabitat of the Himalayan region of the country hosts a wide range of plant diversity as well as crop diversity on which native people rely for their food and nutritional security. The hilly regions of the country are potential source of agriculture production having diversified weather conditions comprises of temperate and subtropical climatic conditions and covers about 35% of total geographical area of the country. Supply

Supply refers to the good being sold at a specific price and moment.

4.1 Determination of Specific Surface Area of Soil

Specific surface area of a soil is defined as surface area per unit weight of soil and is expressed as m² g^-1. The specific surface of soil greatly influences the physical and chemical properties such as retention of water at high suction, swelling, plasticity, soil strength, cation exchange capacity and availability of nutrients. The basic principle of determination of specific surface is based on the amount of gas or polar liquid required to form a monomolecular layer on the soild. Knowledge of molecular size (diameter) and the mass of the adsorbate enables one to calculate specific surface of the adsorbent.

Principle

Dyal and Hendricks (1950) introduced a method for estimating specific area based upon the adsorption of ethylene glycol (EG) to form a monomolecular layer over the entire soil surface. The method involves adding EG to pretreated soil or clay sample and evaporating the excess EG in an evacuated system. The quantity of EG retained at the moment the evaporating rate decreases is proportional to the surface area. Later on Carter et al. (1965) suggested the use of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) having high vapour pressure at room temperature than EG for determining surface area of the layer silicate minerals and soils.

Liedberg et al¹ were the first who demonstrated the exploitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for chemical sensing. Since then the SPR sensing principle has received much attention. In this chapter we shall first describe the principle of this technique and then few sensors that have utilized this phenomenon.

Abstract

The state of Tamil Nadu has a low easterly gradient slope and there are number of rivers, big and small originate from the west flow towards east south easterly and confluence the Bay of Bengal. These were grouped into seventeen major and minor river basins, the Cauvery being the largest basin and the river is also a near perennial river. These river basins receive rainfall both from the southwest and northeast monsoons. The state has over 40,000 surface water bodies and number of major dams and reservoirs. Even then, since the rainfall of the north east monsoon, the major source of water source to these basins, occurs in short span of few days with high rainfall, neither adequate storage is there to store them nor the recharge possibility is available, thus all leading to flooding and wastage. The 40,000 and odd water bodies are heavily silted and polluted too. The paper provides an over view of all these, basin wise, and in addition, strongly advocates intra state river linkage and improvised irrigation management as the best option to save the state from its water deficiency.

5.1 INTRODUCTION: THE PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY OF COLLOIDAL SUSPENSIONS

This chapter is concerned with understanding the factors which influence the partition of ions between solid surfaces and aqueous solutions. There are many aspects of soil science such as some of those concerned with soil formation, transfer of nutrient ions from soil particles to plant roots, soil pollutant interaction and soil management which are critically dependent on what happens in the space of the order of 1 nm wide between solid and equilibrium solution. A broad survey of the development of ideas on soil-electrolyte interaction shows that there have been two main avenues of approach. One views the soil as an electrically charged surface with its adsorbed hydrated ions as one phase in equilibrium with solution, which is seen as the second phase. The other approach focuses on the electrical double layer extending from the charged solid surface out into the solution. In the latter approach the solid surface, the outer equilibrium solution and the make up of the transition zone between these two phases must all be involved in any detailed consideration of the micro structure of the system. For a full and proper understanding of soil-electrolyte interaction anything less than a detailed analysis of the micro-structure is likely to be inadequate and in this it must be remembered that the interaction between electrical double layers which overlap with one another is likely to be important.

4.1 INTRODUCTION

It has been suggested that the relationship of surface chemistry to soil science is similar to that of biochemistry to biology. Certainly the fact that surfaces of soil particles are extensive and reactive leads to a dominance of surface chemistry in soil behaviour, but it is not an exclusive relationship, because many precipitation reactions, oxidation and reduction processes, and biological reactions take place more or less independently of the surface processes. Nevertheless it is difficult to understand soil properties fully without an appreciation of the nature and extent of the surfaces of the soil constituents, and this chapter is devoted to a discussion of this topic.

Preoperative Procedures

Owners are advised to instill antibiotic eye drop such as Moxifloxacin @ two drops b.i.d. for 7 days and eye drop tropicamide @ two drops b.i.d. for 2 days before the cataract surgery for proper dilation of pupil. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops such as Flubriprofenis started t.i.d on the day before surgery. Further, tropicamide (1%) used as mydriatic agent is instilled 30 minutes before operation at the rate of two drops every 5 minutes in the eye to be operated. 0.5% povidone iodine drops are instilled on cornea prior to surgery.
