Introduction

Developing means of farming and agriculture is the reason humans can live in the world today. It is a necessary means of survival, without which there would be famines all over the world. For thousands of years, agriculture was a natural process that did not harm the land it was done on. In fact, farmers were able to pass down their land for many generations, and it would still be fertile as ever.

However, modern agricultural practices have started the process of agricultural pollution. This process causes the degradation of the ecosystem, land, and environment due to the modern-day by-products of agriculture.

Introduction
The rapid expansion of global aquaculture, driven by the increasing demand for high-quality, protein-rich seafood, has necessitated significant advancements in feed production. Historically, fishmeal and fish oil—derived from wild-caught fish—have been the cornerstone ingredients in aquafeeds, providing essential proteins and lipids for the optimal growth, health, and productivity of farmed species. However, the over-reliance on these finite marine resources has raised a host of environmental, economic, and ethical challenges. The depletion of wild fish stocks due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change threatens the sustainability of global fisheries. Moreover, the volatility in the cost and availability of fishmeal and fish oil has placed increasing economic strain on the aquaculture industry, which is projected to grow substantially in the coming decades. These concerns have spurred the search for alternative, sustainable feed ingredients that can reduce dependence on wild-caught fish while maintaining or even improving the nutritional value and health outcomes for farmed fish. This chapter explores the ongoing evolution of sustainable feed ingredients and their crucial role in shaping the future of aquaculture. It highlights innovative approaches, such as plant-based proteins, insect meals, and microbial sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which offer promising solutions to enhance the sustainability of aquafeeds. By addressing both the environmental impact and economic viability of aquaculture feed production, these alternatives represent a pivotal shift towards a more responsible, resilient, and efficient aquaculture industry poised to meet the growing global demand for seafood.

The President of India, in her address to both Houses of Parliament on 4 June 2009 announced:
 
My Government proposes to enact a new law — the National Food Security Act — that will provide a statutory basis for a framework which assures food security for all. Every family below the poverty line in rural as well as urban areas will be entitled, by law, to 25 kilograms of rice or wheat per month at Rs. 3 per kilogram. This legislation will also be used to bring about broader systemic reform in the public distribution system.

Since then, various arms of government as well as civil society organisations have been working on methods of redeeming this pledge.  The National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Sonia Gandhi has recently provided a broad framework for achieving the goal of food for all and forever.  The suggestions of NAC include the initiation as soon as possible of special programmes all over the country to insulate from hunger and malnutrition pregnant and nursing mothers, 0-3-years-old infants, street children, destitutes, old and infirm persons, patients suffering from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and leprosy, physically or mentally handicapped persons and other disadvantaged citizens.

Introduction

The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. Interior wall painting is a repetitive, exhausting and hazardous process. In almost all the developing countries, the increasing population stimulates the construction-related activities such as interior finishing and painting. Painting is classically done by humans and generally requires exhaustive physical efforts and involves exposure to dangerous chemicals.

Abstract

The main objectives of this paper are to know the variability in sustainable growth of banks through the various advantages of the banks participation in commodity market along with identification of the possible strategies to more participation in Indian commodity markets by the banks. The data collected through the structured questionnaire from the 150 respondents. The SPSS 16.0 version was applied to derive the results. The techniques of frequency and the regression analysis applied to infer the results. The study found that 46.5 percent variation in sustainable growth was explained through the investment portfolio and hedging for commodity price volatility and also there was a significant difference between each other and higher returns through the diversified portfolio was more responsible towards the sustainable growth as a reason of banks participation in commodity market. The study also found that 98.7 percent of variation in sustainable growth was explained through the various advantages of the banks participation in commodity market and also found that increase in banks customer incomes was more favourable response towards the sustainable growth and it was followed the lower interest rates for borrowers and the lower volatility and also there was a significance difference from these variables to the dependent variables. It is suggested that there should be a appropriate training programmes of the bank officials to more participation in commodity market through the diversification of portfolio to increase the more returns.

The major mountain ranges in India are the Himalayas and the Western Ghats. The mountain ecosystem is spread over two Union Territories of India: Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and eleven states Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and West Bengal. The hill agriculture has its own unique characteristics and that the growth potential of hill agriculture has remained under-exploited due to various mountain specifities like poor marketing and processing infrastructure, undulating topography, lack of system specific technologies, land degradation, soil erosion, soil acidity and loss of soil fertility. Hill agriculture has several niche areas having comparative advantage for better exploitation of resources and for better trade. Organic farming still remains a viable option for export of specialised commodities especially fruits and vegetables.

Our production systems are at a pivotal stage in terms of meeting consumer demand for affordable food while improving sustainability. Current intensive crop production practices designed to maximize yield have created an unstable, fragile, and non-sustainable production system. Such systems are prone to reduced soil quality, frequent insect and disease resurgence, emergence of resistant weed species, reduced food quality, and detrimental effects on the health and well-being of our communities. With increasing awareness among consumers of produce quality, nutritional value, methods of crop production and effects of production techniques on the environment, there has been a strong move to improve the quality of our production systems. Grower response to this change has been supportive. Growers have shown interest in developing resilient and stable production systems through the adoption of production practices that enhance soil health, crop productivity, and improve long-term farm sustainability and profitability. Such practices emphasize the use of natural processes within farming systems, often called ‘ecologically sound’ practices which build resilience through synergies and complementarities within the field, the farm, and across our landscape and communities.

Sustainable horticulture is nothing but a contemporary approach to horticulture that emphasizes organic/natural approaches and allows an integrated meshing of ideas with synthesized chemicals used sparingly or relegated to the “last resort.” High Tech & Low Tech are encouraged to create a long-term viable result. Short-Term techniques that impact the environment negatively and thwart the biodynamic continuum are rejected.

Sustainability has recently become an important factor in the engineering world. Landscape architecture is a discipline that attempts to improve the way humans interact with the environment. That interaction can be improved in various ways such as water conservation, energy conservation, or urban planning. landscape architecture encompasses urban design, community and regional planning, interior and exterior garden design, parks and recreation, historic site and natural area preservation, energy and water conservation, landscape restoration and management, among others. The varied list is an example of the dynamic essence of landscaping and provides insight into the many areas which can be improved by implementing sustainable practices.

Sustainable development practices aim to protect the quality of life of future generations. This can only be done by understanding how the natural environment operates as well as how human interactions affect it. Sustainable Landscape Architecture focuses on enhancing the holistic knowledge of the surrounding landscapes, including the complex processes which naturally occur to maintain it. Employing this knowledge within the planning phases of development should result in the reduction of negative environmental impacts due to the same. The traditional consequences of land development can be eliminated or mitigated when developers are able to foresee the consequences of their work. Many times, replicating undeveloped conditions and/or native landscapes within the overall site design will prove very useful in achieving the goals of sustainability. All of the sustainable topics covered in this chapter involve the application of a technology that resulted from better understanding the natural environment.

Livelihood connotes the means, activities, entitlements and assets by which people make a living, attempt to meet their various consumption and economic necessities, cope with uncertainties and respond to new opportunities (De Haan and Zoomers, 2003).

Livelihood is a set of economic activities, involving self-employment and/ or wage- employment by using one’s endowments (human and material) to generate adequate resources (cash and non-cash) for meeting the requirements of self and the household.

Ideally, a livelihood should keep a person meaningfully and gainfully occupied in a sustainable manner with dignity

Livelihood, therefore, goes far beyond generating income. A livelihood is much more than employment.

Introduction to sustainable livestock

Sustainable development has been defined by FAO as “the management and conservation of the natural resource base, and the orientation of technological and institutional change in such a manner as to ensure the attainment and continued satisfaction of human needs for present and future generations. In other words, the development that meets up the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Such sustainable development (in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors) conserves land, water, plant and animal genetic resources, is environmentally non-degrading, technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable”. (FAO Council, 1989). Hence, sustainable livestock farming is “the efficient production of safe, high quality products, in a way that protects and improves the natural environment, the social and economic conditions of farmers, their employees and local communities, and safeguards the health and welfare of all farmed species”.

The livestock sector has emerged as a vital sector for ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable agriculture system. Livestock production can be an important
component of a sustainable agricultural system because it can provide a quality source of plant nutrients, be an income generator, and provide an environmentally
sound use of certain lands. Some farmland is just not suitable for crop production, but may be utilised sustainably for livestock production.

Introduction

The generation of vast quantities of agricultural waste/ agri-waste is mainly due to crop residue and agro-industries unutilized products. Rice, wheat, sugarcane and fiber crops are the main components of agri-waste. In India, Wheat, rice and sugarcane are extensively cultivated and consumed by everyone, resulting in considerable agri-waste (Koul et al., 2022). Due to rapid population increase and food security for all, an extension of agricultural land, cropping patterns and multiple uses of the same crop field around the year are some main contributors to a significant rise in agricultural waste. About 380 million tons of agri-waste is produced in India annually, of which the contribution of paddy straw is about 130 million tons. 

In comparison to wheat and sugarcane residue, rice straw is easily degradable, and a significant part can be consumed as animal fodder, roof thatching, combustion, composting and soil mulching in rural areas; however, in urban areas, it creates issues (Mehta et al., 2023). Generally, with short intervals between rabi and kharif crops, controlling crop disease and pests and lacking environmental pollution concerns, farmers always manage their crop residue through stubble burning once or twice a year (Jeff et al., 2017). About 15 20 million tonnes of agri-waste will stubble burning every year in India, releasing vast amounts of smog and other air pollutants in the atmosphere and destroying several beneficial soil microbes, resulting in soil pollution. In India, the primary crop burning on the farm is cereals (58 %) and fiber crops (23 %); however, other crops, viz., sugarcanes, pulses, and oilseeds, can contribute the rest of the total (19%) stubble-burning of agro-waste (IARI 2012).

The contribution of agro biodiversity to world agricultural production is immense. The world agricultural landscape is now dominated by few crops and varieties. This agricultural scenario is suicidal because the homogeneous plant population is vulnerable to biotic and abiotic stresses. The ecosystems rich in biodiversity possess greater resilience and hence able to recover more readily from biotic and abiotic stresses, such as drought, environmental degradation, pests, diseases, epidemics, etc. Hence, a decline in biological diversity puts the functioning of ecosystems at risk. The cultural value of biological diversity conservation and sustainable management for present and future generations is another important reason for conserving it for posterity. To tide over the precarious condition of food insecurity, rich crop germplasm must be sustainably managed to tap the potential of crop genetic resources. The sustainable management of agrobiodiversity is therefore very essential for developing adaptation strategies in the era of global climate change.

3.1 Introduction

Groundwater constitutes about 89% of the total fresh water resources in the planet. But in recent years, due to over exploitation of ground water and erratic nature of monsoon, there has been depletion of ground water across the world. Depletion of ground water has reached to the extent that it is virtually impossible to get the water table back. Even though there is a possibility of recharge of water from the other areas, the process is very slow and may take one year to replenish one meter. In view of this management of ground water has become one of the most significant issues in recent times. Added to it, there are also environmental problems such as aqua for mining, salt water intrusion, stream base flow reduction etc. For several reasons the efficient management of ground water resources through market mechanism has become difficult. Against this context the present article attempts to analyze the need for sustainable ground water management in India. The article also briefly discusses the concept of sustainable ground water management, factors affecting ground water availability, different approaches towards developing and using available ground water without adversely affecting the hydro geological balance. Further, the paper highlights strategies for sustainable groundwater management, including development of aquifers, rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge methods. The article offers some relevant policy recommendations for sustainable groundwater management in India.

Abstract

Traditional communities the world over have been using a variety of indigenous biological resources in farming and life support systems. They are direct stakeholders in the in situ conservation and sustainable management of diverse plant species on their farms and in their home gardens. Location specific needs and ecosystem diversity plays a decisive role in maintaining biocultural resources. The present paper, based on six different case studies, describes the practices of traditional and innovative farmers in conservation of indigenous biodiversity. How farmers explore, domesticate and manage wild plant resources to sustain their livelihoods is the main theme of this study. It represents an explorative and qualitative study, carried out with diverse communities living in central India, Indo-Gangetic plains and mountainous ecosystems of Arunachal Pradesh. The study is based on 7 years of collaborative and participatory research with local and native communities. Data was generated using a combination of conventional (personal interviews with open-ended questions and informal interaction) and participatory methods.

The importance of border inspections to prevent the spread of quarantine pathogens. The role of forecasting models, precision farming, nanotechnology, and endotherapy in modern disease management. Use of biocontrol agents, systemic resistance inducers, gene-silencing technology, and plant nutrition to control diseases sustainably. Engaging multiple sectors to implement sustainable crop protection solutions. These efforts aim to create a more balanced and sustainable approach to agriculture, fostering resilience against plant diseases while minimizing the environmental footprint of farming practices.

The concept of sustainability in agricultural system

All forms of production systems exist today, from nomadic herding to continuous, intensive monocrop systems. Their distribution is determined by soil and climate conditions, and by social and economic factors. In very general terms, as one moves from drier to wetter areas, pastures and animals become less important, and trees more so. Population density is greatest where soils are most fertile, and management systems the most intense. Most production systems have evolved so that they are sustainable in terms of the environmental conditions prevailing at the time—including the level of demographic pressure.

Abstract

This chapter highlights the significance of irrigated desert agriculture as a prime cause of the settlement and welfare of nomads and the consequent reduction of conflicts over limited land resources. Um Jawaseer Desert Farm Project is located in Bayouda Desert, the Northern State about 200 km north of the capital Khartoum. The planning and management approaches of such irrigated projects were discussed with special emphasis on the participatory approach. In this respect the roles of the donor (NGO), traditional tribal institutions and the project beneficiaries were illustrated. The project beneficiaries were organized into the farmers, well and women committees. The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of the project were evaluated. The project maintained food security, improved nutritional status, hygiene, housing environment and assisted in the provision of primary education and basic health facilities. Cost/benefit analysis showed the high profitability of the project. Other positive impacts include conservation of the fragile environment and biodiversity and improvement of animal productivity. Consequently, the area which witnessed an out-migration, during the seventies and the eighties, due to drought and desertification is now experiencing incoming migration.

However, adaptation to the sedentary mode of life was a real challenge. The most striking benefits of the project was that of women training for the, involvement in the decision-making process and empowerment, since 20% of the land is allocated for women. In addition to that, problems like build up of salinity, sand encroachment, low organic matter content and increased susceptibility to some water-related diseases due to irrigation were tackled successfully.

After the Green Revolution, it is now time for an Ever-Green Revolution based on Eco Agriculture or Agroecology. In 2018, the FAO described Agroecology/Eco Agriculture as a means to transform food and agriculture systems by addressing root causes and emphasizing the improvement of efficiency in resource use, conserving, protecting and improving livelihoods, promoting equality and well-being and enhancing the resilience of people, communities and ecosystems. A timely transition to a sustainable eco-agriculture approach is essential to protect food security, the well-being of people and farmers prosperity. Eco Agriculture is a broad term that can inclusively refer to agroecology, regenerative, organic, natural, jaivik, etc, and is increasingly being recognized as the way to help save the planet. While discussing this with Prof Swaminathan and the ICFA team, the idea of a Working Group emerged. When I was requested to form the Eco Agri Working Group through ICFA, I consulted with different sectors and tried to determine the “why” and “how” of the impending Eco Agri Revolution.

The past sixty years led to Green Revolution and alongwith that ‘success’ several adverse impacts and the changing global situation as noted in Table – 1 are the reasons for the need for an Evergreen Revolution based on Eco Agriculture

Natural resources are naturally occurring resources which can be exploited for economic gain. They include raw materials such as fuels, minerals and metals, soil, water, air, sunlight, land, biomass and ecosystems. Natural resources also include living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) materials. Natural resources are gifts of nature for the humankind.

Phenolic compounds in the wastewater are harmful pollutants which originate as byproducts from several industries like pulp and paper mills, coaking plants, petroleum refineries, tanning industries, phenolic resin manufacturing units etc. Phenolic compounds impart colour and odour to water and are toxic even at a very low level of concentration. The various processes for the removal of phenolics from the wastewater can be grouped into two broad categories. In one category are those processes like microbiological degradation, chemical treatment, incineration etc. which aim at destroying the phenolics, while the other category has processes involving the recovery of phenolics e.g. solvent extraction, activated carbon treatment, uptake by porous polymeric adsorbents etc. Among these various methods polymeric adsorbents are very promising for the removal of phenolic compounds due to following reasons. The efficiency of removal of phenolics by porous polymeric adsorbents and their subsequent elution from the polymer matrix is exceptionally good. The requirement equipment is very simple and the operation is usually trouble free. The operation can be carried out at ambient temperature and the space requirements are comparatively small. Very stringent specifications regarding the quality of the effluent can be met by the use of polymeric adsorbents.

Introduction to sustainable disease management

Plants and pathogens are involved in ongoing interactions over millennia that have been modified by coevolutionary processes to limit the spatial extent and temporal duration of disease epidemics (Zhan et al. 2015). These interactions are disrupted by modern agricultural practices, such as intensified monoculture using high yielding varieties. Agricultural intensification and monoculture coupled with globalization disrupt the coevolutionary dynamics of plant-pathogen interactions which escalating the evolutionary rate of pathogens and increasing the risk of plant disease epidemics. These activities, when supplemented with high resource inputs, create unique conditions which is conducive to widespread plant disease epidemics and rapid evolution of pathogen. Disease management requires a significant shift to include ecoevolutionary principles in the design of adaptive disease management strategy for minimizing the evolutionary potential of plant pathogens by reducing their genetic variation, stabilizing their evolutionary dynamics, and preventing dissemination of pathogen variants carrying new infectivity or resistance to pesticides (Zhan et al. 2014). As environmental and ecological issues continue to impact on agriculture, all the crop-specific and regional-specific, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to be developed for crop production, must be economically feasible, ecologically sound, environmentally safe and socially acceptable. Numerous non-chemical methods for management of crop diseases such as pathogen-free seeds, disease resistance, crop rotation, plant extracts, organic amendments and biological control agents are considered less harmful than chemical pesticides and therefore, offer great potential for application in modern agriculture (Marshal et al. 2008). No single method can provide satisfactory management of crop diseases. Integration of all the effective and eco-friendly measures in accordance with the dynamics of the agro-ecosystem management would be the best strategy for efficient plant disease management.

Indigenous chickens play vital role in sustainable rural development by providing livelihood and nutritional security to the rural and tribal people. However, indigenous chickens in the country increasingly face the threat of their replacement or erosion in their genetic diversity due to introduction of exotic or improved chickens to enhance productivity of backyard poultry production. Therefore, it becomes imperative to improve the growth and productivity of indigenous chickens in order to make the rearing of indigenous chickens economically attractive proposition. Aseel is one of the important indigenous breeds of chicken that is being conserved and improved for growth and egg production at Directorate of Poultry Research (DPR), Hyderabad. The averageegg production of improved Aseel chickens recorded in a laying cycle of 72 weeks of age was 150.3±5.63with an average egg weight of 48.66 ±0.34g. The average body weights of male and female birds recorded at 72 weeks of age were 3156 ± 27.4 and 2133±36.1 g, respectively while corresponding shank lengths were 135.23±0.7 and 104.9±0.4 mm. Another indigenous chicken germplasm, Ghagus-ecotype was collected from border area of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh at Kolar district and is being characterized and conserved at DPR. The comparative growth performance of these indigenous chickens was also studied under similar management conditions. It was observed that the growth and egg production of improved Aseel breed was significantly higher than the Ghagus-ecotype chickens. The improved Aseel breed with its better growth and production performance appears to be a promising indigenous chicken for sustainable rural poultry production.

ICAR SCAD Krishi Vigyan Kendra Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu, organised a 3 -day SCSP training programme on inland shrimp farming during 21st - 23rd December 2021, sponsered by MANAGE, Hyderabad. SC/ ST communities are given training on sustainable shrimp/prawn culture so as to enable them to take up shrimp culture as a means of self-employment or to get employed in shrimp farms by other farmers, thereby earning a livelihood. The participants were provided with hands-on training on pond preparation, stocking, feeding, water quality management, disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest processing of shrimp. In addition to this, they were also given insights into market trends and opportunities for shrimp farming. The participants were enthusiastic and showed keen interest in learning about the latest shrimp farming techniques and practices.

Sustainable agricultural development can only be possible, when all agricultural inputs used judicially. Soil management practices, like nutrient management, time schedule of fertilizer application, irrigation management etc. are should be manage in such away that resulted in best remuneration and sustain overall soil health. More over that, soil physical properties like, tilth, aeration and drainage are also play important role in soil productivity, so tillage operation should be carry out at proper  level of soil moisture condition to maintain good soil tilth which result in better soil environment for high crop yield. The most important factor in sustainable soil management for agricultural development is nutrient management and it's only possible through integration. So nutrient management through integrated approaches, like use of chemical fertilizer is decreases by integrating with organic manures, biofertilizer, green manure, neem cake, caster cake etc which resulted in sustainable crop production and good soil health on long-term basis.

The development of green nanocomposites requires more than replacing conventional materials with renewable alternatives; it also requires responsible sourcing, efficient resource utilization, and consideration of the complete material life cycle. This chapter examines green and eco-friendly nanocomposites from the perspective of sustainable material selection and circular economy principles. It discusses strategies for obtaining renewable raw materials, reducing environmental impacts, improving resource efficiency, and designing materials for reuse, recycling, and recovery. Applications of green nanocomposites are also considered in relation to sustainability objectives. By connecting material development with circular economy strategies, the chapter provides a framework for developing nanocomposites that combine functional performance with reduced environmental burden.

Introduction

The cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), octoploid in nature is a result of hybridization of two American species, the Chilean F. chiloensis and Virginian F. virginiana. The name strawberry does not incidentally, seems to have anything to do with the practice of putting straw around the plants and long predates their cultivation. It probably comes from ‘strayberry’ for the runners cause young plants to stray from the parent. Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is one of the most important soft fruits, and its cultivated area has increased significantly during the last few years in sub-tropical areas despite of its temperate nature. Being a high input requiring crop, the profit of margin is reduced in sub-tropical areas due to lack of runnering caused by high temperature and high light intensity. Strawberry is one of the most popular rosaceous vegetable used as preferable fruit has a great value for local consumption as well as for export. Attractive appearance, unique taste, availability of fresh fruits during the period of fresh fruits scarcity in the market, short duration nature, high return per unit area, twice earnings in a year (through fruits during spring and runners during autumn) and wider acceptability of its processed products, the strawberry has become a choicest crop of growers of sub tropical areas, and being grown commercially around the various cities of northern India. Although it is a quick and high return giving fruit crop, but the margin of profit in strawberry cultivation under sub-tropical areas is greatly reduced due to regular annual investment (Rs. 0.60 lakhs/ha) by the growers for the procurement of runner plants in every planting season (October) from temperate areas, as high temperature (>35⁰C) and intense light following fruit harvesting restrict the runnering as well as survival of mother plants in these areas (Sharma and Yamdagni, 2000).

Introduction

Landscaping is an expanse of scenery, a great way to add beauty, and curbs appeal to the place. The urban landscaping designs the outdoor and indoor places marveling the beauty of nature, i.e., the warmth, breeze, sunrays, shade, and the cool climate. Sustainable Landscaping can be defined as the designing of a garden considering the environmental issues at hand and landscaping in such a way that the designs, the planting materials, and the management are in balance with the locality with minimal resources. According to Loehrein (2013), organic gardening practices are integral to the design, construction, and maintenance of sustainable residential and commercial gardens.

Precision sustainable gardening, which involves applying specific amounts of care and resources to individual plants at precisely the right time and in the right place, is a form of precision farming. The local community, the environment, and the health of birds, bees, and other wildlife can all benefit immediately from a sustainably landscaped yard. India shares 16% of the world population, while its land is only 2% of the total geographical area of the world. Naturally, the pressure on the land is often beyond its carrying capacity. Therefore, the productive lands, especially the farmlands in the India are in the constant process of various degrees of degradation and are fast turning into wastelands. At present, approximately 68.35 million hectare area of the land is lying as wastelands in India. Out of these lands, approximately 50% lands are such non-forest lands, which can be made fertile again if treated properly. Water is a vital component of agricultural production. It is essential to maximise both yield and quality. Water has to be applied in the right amounts at the right time in order to achieve the right crop result. At the same time, the application of water should avoid waste of a valuable resource and be in sympathy with the environment as a whole. Understanding, measuring and assessing how water f lows around the farm, and recognising how farming practices affect f lows, will help farmers to manage water efficiently and reduce pollution risks. Land management and advanced technologies can help maximise the “crop per drop” that farmers produce worldwide. Water used in irrigation accounts for 90% of agricultural water demand. Improving irrigation systems is therefore crucial to making contributions to water savings in agriculture. In any agricultural production system the promotion of good agricultural practices and product stewardship is fundamental for sustainable agriculture. Industry is part of various multi stakeholder partnership initiatives that support efforts to protect water quality. These include reducing soil erosion, avoiding pesticide run-off and maintaining wildlife habitats as part of a holistic farm or land management approach.

Introduction

Though the potential benefits generated by the drip irrigation method are apparent, the adoption of drip irrigation is yet to be widely promoted across different regions and states in India. Several factors such as huge initial investment, small size of holding, lack of technical support, nature of cropping pattern, access to water and socio-economic conditions of farmers etc. (Namara et al, 2005, Suresh Kumar, 2012) are constraining adoption of drip irrigation. In some cases, even after the adoption of drip irrigation, the farmers, particularly, the small farmers have often discontinued use of drip irrigation for several reasons such as due to lack of maintenance, irrelevant cultural background, and unreliable water supply (Kulecho and Weatherhead, 2005).

Background and Technology Intervention

Owing to the subsequent monsoon failures and unavailability of water for irrigation, Tamil Nadu farmers have switched over to drip irrigation which is not only saving huge quantity of water for them, but also preventing irrigation run off and providing deep water percolation. In Tamil Nadu, usage of drip irrigation is prevalent among vegetable and fruit growers and organic farmers.

To relieve the plants from stress or strain of water logging and water scarcity, Tamil Nadu Horticulture Development Agency has played a key role by rightly intervening the farmers through drip irrigation technology and thereby improving water use efficiency.

Weeds are the most costly category of agricultural pests, causing more yield losses and added labor costs than either insect pests or crop disease. Weeds are a constant fact of life in annual row crops, vegetables, and other horticultural crops. In India, the manual method of weed control is quite popular and effective. The usage of herbicides in India and elsewhere in the world is increasing due to possible benefits to farmers. At the same time, the continuous use of herbicides of the same weed shift, herbicide resistance in weeds and environmental pollutions. Application of herbicides also kills species of bacteria, fungi and protozoa thereby upsetting the balance of pathogens and beneficial micro organisms. The complexity of these situations has resulted in a need to develop a holistic sustainable eco-friendly weed management programme throughout the farming period (Gnanavel and Natarajan, 2014). Sustainable development of agriculture is concerned about the conservation of land, water, plant and animal genetic resources, is environmentally non-degrading, technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable. Sustainable weed management is the use of weed control methods that are socially acceptable, environmentally benign and cost-effective.

There appears a general consensus that agriculture sector in India requires to be revitalized to enable it to respond effectively to the multitude of challenges that it now faces, and include assuring food security and environmental sustainability against the background of declining natural resources, changing climate and needs to become increasingly competitive.

Sustainable agricultural practices cover a whole range of improving sustainability: raising soil fertility, improving water storage capacity, increasing water quality, diversification, raising people’s capability to cope with risks and withstand natural calamities, reducing energy consumption, minimizing risk, and so on.

It is impossible to achieve sustainable development without applying sustainable agriculture on a large scale. The relationship between agricultural production and eradication of extreme poverty and hunger is very strong: agriculture is the very basis for food security. Together with fisheries, it provides practically all of the world’s food.

Aim

To depict the detail method of tendon suturing of transected gastrocnemious tendon for union.

Procedure

After cleaning, debriding and flushing the transected site thoroughly local antiseptic and antibiotic is applied.

1. To expose the tendon ends clear visual as well as proper exposer the site was enlarged by two vertical incision placed at dorsal and ventral part of the transected site.(Fig.1).
2. The three different tendons and their locations is identified. The both end of tendon of a particular group are brought close together and joins end to end and retained with strong polyester suture putting to interrupted knots at 90 degree to each other.(Fig. 2).
3. Their peritendon cover are pulled over the suturing site from their either ends and are also retained in position with additional interrupted suture running at 90 degree to each other.(Flg. 3). In this way 4 interrupted suture are required for approaching one tendon.
4. In this way all the 3 tendons are joined with their respective other ends with suture. Total no of 12 interrupted suture are required for joining all the 3 structure of the gastrocnemious tendon. At the end the suture tendons are strengthened by placing to interrupted stainless steel suture. (Fig. 4).

Finally a flushing catheter was placed at higher level and the suture site is covered with a thick dry antiseptic absorbent cotton padding.
