Abstract

In the hybridization programme, the horticulturally desirable female line HC-17- 11(susceptible) was crossed with powdery mildew resistant male line FC-1.  Over the years, the variety CHP-2 proved its stable resistance (average disease score 1.58 on 1-5 scale) to powdery mildew under natural epiphytotic conditions as well as supremacy in yield performance (11.7-28.0 t/ ha) over the check variety (10.3-16.5 t/ha) in different testing centers of AICRP(Vegetable Crops) and farmers’ fields (20-26 t/ha).Additionally, the pods are medium long (9.25 cm),light green,7-8 seeded with 48-52 per cent recovery of light green, sweet and tasteful  shelled peas. The shelled peas contain 1.4 per cent soluble protein and 9.5 mg ascorbic acid/100g of fresh shelled peas.

Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY)

The Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), a programme for the self employment of rural poor was started from 01.04.1999 after restructuring the six erstwhile Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) and its allied programmes, These were : IRDP, Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM), Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA), Supply of Toolkits in Rural Areas (SITRA) and Ganga Kalyan Yojana (GKY), and Million Wells Scheme (MWS). The basic objective of the SGSY was to bring the assisted poor families (Swarozgaris) above the Poverty Line by providing them income-generating assets through a mix of bank credit and governmental subsidy. The programme aimed at establishing a large number of micro enterprises in rural areas based on the ability of the poor and potential of each area.

This is a benign/malignant tumor originating from the apocrine and eccrine sweat glands in dogs. It is usually recorded in the head and neck region but it may occur on any site.

Cytology reveals clusters of moderate to severe exfoliated neoplastic cells which contain round nuclei slightly eccentric in position in the light pale granular cytoplasm. In carcinomas, clusters of basophilic epithelial cells had large nuclei and prominent nucleoli. It may also contain one or two large secretory droplets.

ABSTRACT

Sweet Corn (Zea mays var. saccharata var. rugosa) also called Indian corn, sugar corn, and pole corn is a kind of maize having high sugar content (12 – 15%). It is a very delicious and rich source of energy, vitamin A and vitamin C. It is consumed as raw, boiled or steamed green cobs/ grain. Cooked/ processed sweet corn has significant antioxidant activity which has been suggested to minimize the chance of heart disease and cancer. In addition to this, it is also utilized in preparation of soup, salad and other famous recipes. Besides green cobs, the green fodder is also available to the farmers for their cattle. It requires deep fertile and good drainage loam or sandy loam soil with neutral pH. It germinates best at the temperature range from 20^°C - 25^°C. Green cobs are harvested after 20 days of pollination during kharif but the days may accorded by season to season. It is ready to harvest in 70-75 days during kharif season and 105 – 110 days during rabi season. After harvesting, green cobs should be immediately transported to the cold storage in refrigerated trucks to avoid the conversion of sugar to starch because loses flavor at high temperature. Being a short duration crop (70-80 days), farmer can earn 2.0 to 2.5 lac rupees per hectare because it require less input i.e. water, manpower and other crop management practices. Therefore, it can generate a good employment for rural youthdue to high demand in hotels for preparation of various dishes.

Acorus calamus, commonly known as Sweet Flag, is a medicinal plant with a long history of therapeutic use. Various names in Hindi, Sanskrit, and other languages know it. The plant has a distinctive lemon-like scent in its leaves and a pleasant aroma in its roots. Sweet Flag is highly valued for its essential oil used in the perfume industry. Unfortunately, the plant is now classified as an endangered species due to over-exploitation.
Origin and distribution Acorus calamus, commonly known as Sweet Flag, is native to northern latitude countries worldwide. It is widely dispersed across the USA and can be found growing wild or cultivated in India and Sri Lanka up to 1800 meters.
Botany
Sweet Flag is a perennial, semi-aquatic herb that exhibits a distinctive morphology. The rhizome, which serves as the plant's stem, is cylindrical in shape, measuring 19-25 mm in diameter and 10 cm in length. The exterior of the rhizome is light brown in color, while the interior is white and spongy. The rhizome is also highly aromatic, emitting a sweet, pungent scent when bruised. It is a creeping, highly branched structure that allows the plant to spread rapidly.

Sweet gourd, (Momordica cochinchinensis) (Cucurbitaceae),  called as ‘spiny gourd’,  ‘crow cucumber’, ‘spike fruited crow cucumber’ or ‘elephant bitter gourd’ and ‘gac fruit’ is a wild vegetable, native to East and South East Asia comprising India, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, China, Indonesia and New Guinea (de Wilde and Duyfjes, 2002). It is by far the most extensively distributed and more variable species among the genus Momordica L. Even though, it is restricted to Andaman Islands and Assam in India, it occurs as a natural component of coastal scrub jungles and partially opened forests especially stream banks in South, Middle and North Andaman Islands (Joseph 2005). It is cultivated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal and Assam by tribal people in their homegardens. It is grown as a vegetable in China and Japan (Jeffrey 2001). It is known by various vernacular names as ‘Adavi kakrol’ (Telugu), ‘Hathiya kankad’, ‘Gol kakra’ (Bengali) and ‘Jangli Kakrol’ (Andaman Islands).

In India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and tropical Africa, it is widely grown. In India, there are four species of bitter gourd that belong to the genus Momordica.

Botany and taxonomy: It is an annual climber vine with woody, thick stems that can grow up to 20 metres long, large, heart-shaped leaves, large, creamy to pale yellow flowers that are single, ovoid, large, dark green fruits that can grow up to 20 cm long and weigh up to 1.5 kilogrammes, periphery with smooth thorns, yellow turned orange when ripe, and black seeds. The leaves, petals, and seeds of this plant are edible and can be eaten as a vegetable.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus L.) was discovered in Sicily in 1695 (Rice, 2002). Its species are found both in the Old World and the New World. The main centres of diversity are the Mediterranean region, Asia Minor and North America as well as temperate South America and East Africa (Kupicha, 1977, Jackson and Yunus, 1984, Yamamoto et al., 1984 and Simola, 1986). It generally grows in temperate regions and has been found on all continents except Antarctica (Kenicer et al., 2009 and Kenicer et al., 2005). Its cultivation is popular not only in the United Kingdom and the United States but also in Europe, Russia, Egypt, New Zealand, Australia and Japan (Hambidge,

1996, Inoue, 1981, 2007 and Rice, 2002). There are some reports of commercial sweet pea cut flower production (Hammett, 2006, Inoue, 1981 and Parsons, 2004). A seed bank at the Chichester Collection was started in 1998 and stores around 900 cultivars and around 100 accessions of other species.

Sweet pepper or bell pepper, a cultivar group of the species Capsicum annuum under the family Solanaceae (Chromosome No. 2n =2x =24) is grown worldwide as green vegetable for its thick and fleshy fruits having delicate taste, pleasant flavour and colour. Sweet pepper requires slightly cooler climate than hot chillies. The fruits are generally non-pungent hence, it is commonly known as sweet pepper. It is also popular as bell pepper because of blocky fruit shape. China is the largest producer of sweet pepper in the world.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Hot chillies and sweet pepper have originated from the wild and weedy species Capsicum annuum var. minimum whose domestication occurred in Mexico and distributed from the southern United states to northern south America. Domestication, cultivation and human selection brought about changes in fruit size and shape and fruit position from erect to pendant. It also resulted in more self-pollinating character due to inserted stigma unlike the exserted stigma in the wild types.

Sweet potato weevil: Cylas formicarius: Apionidae

It is a specific pest of sweet potato and the most important one. Adult weevils are ant-like, slender bodied having elongated snout-like bluish-brown head with geniculate antenna, bright red thorax and leg tips and bluish-brown elytra. Females make small cavities on the tubers or stems and lay eggs singly. Each female lays 180-200 eggs. Grubs are elongate, legless, pale-yellowish white in colour with smaller brown head. Pupation takes place in larval tunnels in the tuber. Incubation, grub and pupal stages last for 5 to 8, 14 to 17 and 4 to 5 days respectively. Life cycle is completed in 4-5 weeks and adults live for 95-110 days. The grubs bore into stems, tunnel inside and feed on soft tissues. Grubs and adults bore into tubers both in field and storage godowns. Affected tubers develop dark patches, which later start rotting. Feeding holes and adult emergence holes can be seen on vines and tubers.  In severe infestation the collar region of the plants shows unusual thickening due to proliferation and hypertrophy of tissues causing a characteristic terpenoid odour.  Even the slightly damaged tubers are unsuitable for cooking and consumption.  Hence yield loss in practice may come to 100% in many cases.

Sweet potato Ipomea batatas(L). Lam. is an asexually propagated vegetable. It is grown in most of the tropical and subtropical region of the earth. In USA production extended to temperate regions. Vines as well as roots are eaten or fed to live stock. It is the source of industrial starch and potential source of the alcohol. Among the major tuber crops cultivated in India sweet potato rank third after potato and cassava in area and production.

Origin: Available evidence suggests South Mexico through Central America and Northern South America as the probable center of origin. It is perennial but handled as annual. Its hardiness and drought tolerance are well recognized.

Family: Convolvulaceae, Chromosome number: 2n=90

It is the only known natural hexaploid morning glory. Most of the wild species are diploid (2n=30). Hybridization is restricted with in species because of its hexaploidy nature. Extensive variability with in species is observed. Tuber is the fleshy subterranean stem or shoot but in sweet potato tuber is a root, and hence it cannot be a tuber (common error). It is a perennial, and the storage root is capable of continued enlargement and does not mature in the sense of reaching some final size or stage of development. From the stand point of function, the root system consists of absorbing roots and fleshy storage roots.

Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas under the family Convolvulaceae (Chromosome No. 2n = 6x = 90) is an important tuber crop grown mostly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Latin America, the Pacific islands, Papua New Guinea and Africa. India and China are the leading sweet potato growing countries in the world. In India, it is largely grown in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Its large, swollen, starchy, sweet-tasting, adventitious roots are used as tuberous vegetable. Orange-fleshed sweet potato, in particular, with high β carotene content has become a prominent example of the effectiveness of biofortified staple crops to combat vitamin A deficiency. Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fibers and are also known for improving gut health and digestion. It also contains a high amount of phytosterol that has a protective effect on the digestive system. Sometimes, tender leaves and shoots are consumed as a green leafy vegetable. Sweet potato tubers are used in agro-industry for the preparation of starch, alcohol and animal feed.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Sweet potato has probably been originated between the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and the mouth of the Orinoco River in Venezuela.

Sorghum bicolor L. Moench, commonly known as sorghum, has emerged as a significant and promising candidate for both sugar and lignocellulosic biofuel production. Cultivated sorghum varieties exhibit a wide range of phenotypic and morphological characteristics, and based on their intended use, they have been categorized into four distinct groups: grain, forage, energy, and sweet sorghum. Grain sorghum varieties typically stand between three to six feet in height, featuring large ear heads. Their primary role is to serve as a source of food for humans or livestock feed. These varieties play a crucial role in providing sustenance and nutrition to both people and animals. Sweet sorghum, also known as sweet stalk sorghum, represents a unique group of genotypes that accumulate soluble sugars within their stalks. These varieties can grow impressively tall, reaching up to twenty feet, and produce significantly higher biomass yields compared to grain sorghum (Murray et al., 2009). Sweet sorghum’s stems are characterized by their thickness and fleshiness, although they do tend to have relatively lower seed yields. Despite this, sweet sorghum offers substantial advantages in terms of bioethanol production due to the high sucrose content present in its stalks (Srinivasa Rao et al. 2009). It has garnered recognition as an ideal candidate for bioenergy crop cultivation in tropical and temperate regions around the world, particularly in the southern United States. When compared to other bioenergy crops such as corn, wheat, sugarcane, sugar beet, cassava, and sweet potatoes, sweet sorghum presents several noteworthy benefits (Disasa et al., 2016). It is notably drought-tolerant and requires significantly less water than many other crops, such as one-third of the water needed for sugarcane and half of that required for corn. Furthermore, it exhibits tolerance to salinity, enabling its cultivation in marginal regions that are not traditionally suitable for crop production. Additionally, sweet sorghum boasts lower greenhouse gas emissions on a life-cycle basis, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly biofuel production process. The applications of sweet sorghum are diverse, with its stalks being used for various purposes. In Brazil and India, the stalk is chewed fresh or processed for the production of food-grade syrup and alcohol. Its high sucrose content makes it an excellent candidate for bioethanol production, with the potential to yield up to 8,000 liters per hectare, surpassing the ethanol yield of corn by approximately twofold and outperforming

Abstract

Airflow drying persists as the main dehydration operation. Indeed, the high expense of freeze-drying in term of equipment cost and energy consumption considerably restricts its use and confines its applications to high added value products (pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, etc.). However, airflow drying undergoes fundamental problems such as low operation performance, poor product quality and short reliability of the equipment. The time of drying is long; particularly at the end of the operation, which implies crucial energy consumption. The poor quality of the end product is related to thermal degradation and in particular to the compactness of texture as a result of the phenomena of shrinkage and case hardening. Another main problem common to all drying operations, including freeze-drying, is the safety of the end products. Swell-drying is defined as an operation that combines optimized hot air drying with instant controlled pressure controlled texturing. The improvement of texture, the preservation of sensory and nutritional quality, the possibility of manufacturing expanded granule powders and the reduction of drying time and energy consumption allow considering swell-drying as the most relevant drying process.

Aim: To determine the Efficiency Vs Load characteristics (External characteristics) of D.C. shunt motor Swinburne’s method.

This method is an indirect method of testing a DC machine. It is named after Sir James Swinburne. Swinburne’s test is the most commonly used and simplest method of testing of shunt and compound wound DC machines which have constant flux. In this test the efficiency of the machine at any load is pre-determined. We can run the machine as a motor or as a generator. The iron and friction losses are determined by measuring the input to the DC machine at no-load. The machine is to be run as a motor at normal voltage and speed. The Swinburne’s method includes all the losses in the field circuit and winding which do not occur actually in the machine but the error introduced due to this is quite insignificant and still shows the accurate results. In this method of testing no-load losses are measured separately and eventually we can determine the efficiency.

Swine influenza (Swineflu) is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs. It is an upper respiratory tract disease of pigs that causes outbreaks in herds. Swineflu infects people every year and is found typically in people who have been in contact with pigs although there have been person to person transmission of the disease. Influenza A virus subtypes namely H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 are circulating around the world. In US, H1N1 subtype was exclusively prevalent among swine population before 1998 however since late August 1998, H3N2 subtype has been isolated from pigs. Most of the H3N2 virus isolates are triple assortants containing genes from human (HA, NA and PB1), swine (NS, NP and M) and avian (PB2 and PA) lineages. Influenza viruses are generally species specific i.e. avian influenza virus will infect only birds, swine influenza virus pigs, human influenza virus humans and so on. Although interspecies transmission of influenza viruses are reported, the transmission of influenza virus from one species to another is not always possible. Again, influenza A virus isolated from pigs can acquire the pandemic potential but not isolated from other species. Further, recent outbreaks of swineflu affecting human beings in Mexico, USA, UK,Canada, Asia etc with a death toll of 49 persons resulted in high alert in all the countries and compulsory checking of all the persons coming from the affected countries to other counties. The causative agent of swineflu is H1N1. So, it is the prime time to create awareness about the disease among the public which in turn help in tackling the disease in an effective and efficient manner and to prevent its transmission to human beings from swine species.

Etiology: Swineflu is caused by a virus under the genus Influenza A virus and family Orthomyxoviridae. Influenza A viruses are spherical with a diameter of 80-120 nm and may be filamentous. There are two types of surface glycoproteins namely haemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) present on the virus particles. A total of 17HA and 10NA types have been reported in influenza A viruses. It contains 8 copies single stranded negative sense RNA molecules as genome which encode 12 proteins: 3 subunits of the viral RNA polymerase complex, PB1 (encoding 3 proteins PB1, PB1-F2 and N-40), PB2 and PA; a nucleoprotein (NP), two surface glycoproteins, HA and NA, a matrix protein (M1), an ion channel protein (M2), a nonstructural protein (NS1) and a nuclear export protein (NEP- also known as NS2). There are 170 combinations of two surface glycoproteins, 17 HA and 10 NA that determine the antigenic properties and subtype classification of virus. However, human disease historically has been caused by 3 subtypes of HA (H1, H2 and H3) and two types of N (N1 and N2). Further in 1997, the outbreak of avianflu/birdflu in Hong Kong affected 18 persons with a death of 6 persons. The avian influenza virus responsible for that outbreak was H5N1. From that time H5, H7 and H9 ( all from avian origin) have been implicated in causing disease in human beings.

Swine Marketing

The animal population in India is nearly 14 millions which is increasing day by day. The importance of animals in Indian Economy cannot be neglected. The economic benefit from animals is 26% of the total benefit from agriculture. Agricultural farming is not possible without animals. In agricultural profession, animals have an important role. In our country, crores of small and marginal farmers and agricultural labourers depend for their life on animals for their livelihood. Poor animal wealth is not a good symptom for a country.

Till today the work which is done on animal wealth by economists and marketing specialists is only limited. Economic and marketing studies on meat producing animals in our country is very less. Pigs are normally reared for meat purposes. Pigs are mostly untouched from this type of research on economic and marketing aspects. Pig population in our country is nearly 12 millions, which is 2.5% of total animal population in India.

Due to lack of studies, it is not possible to give any statement about correct situation of marketing and capacity of pigs.

A. Answer the following questions:

1.    What is flushing?

Ans: It means putting the sow on a more nutritious ration before breedingseasonto improvephysical condition of the female, prominent heat symptoms, increases ovulation rate, shortens period between weaning to successful conception, more uniform litter size and minimizes embryonic death, prompt post weaning estrus.

2.    What is piglet anaemia?

Ans: It is a condition occurs 2-4 weeks after birth when piglets do not have access to soil or pasture and are housed in concrete floor. Piglet anemia is characterized by labored spasmodic breathing(popularlyknownasthumps); hemoglobinlevelfalls to 3-4mg/100ml of blood, poor growth rate, wrinkled skin, rough coat, lack of healthy pink color of visible mucous membrane.

3.    Why pig industry in India has not yet been developed?

Ans: It is mainly due to the fact that pig is not used as meat by majority of meat eaters.

4.    Why it is advisable to offer cereal based ration to the piglets only after two weeks?

India enjoys one of the largest livestock wealth in the world India has continued to experience an increasing growth in its livestock sector. Between 2010-11 and 2019-20, gross valueadded (GVa) from livestock sector grew at an extraordinary rate of 7.6% annually. Among the livestock species, pig finds an important place as it being reared by socio-economically weaker sections of the rural India) Pig as compared to other livestock species has a great potential to contribute to faster economic return, because of certain important inherent traits like high fecundity, better-feed conversion efficiency, early maturity and short generation interval. Pig farming requires small investment on its housing and equipment. It has immense potential to ensure nutritional and economic security for the weaker sections of the society.The pig grows fast and is a prolific breeder, farrowing 10-12 piglets at a time. It is capable of producing two litters per year under good management conditions. The carcase yield is high (65 -80% of live weight). Pigs convert inedible feeds, forages, and certain grain by products into valuable nutrition’s mean. The faeces of pigs are useful in maintaining soil fertility. Pig population According to the 20 th Livestock census of India pigs comprises 1.7 % to the total livestock population (http://dahd.nic.in). The total Pigs in the country are 9.06 million in the current Census, declined by 12.03% over the previous Census. Out of the total pigs 20.98% are either exotic or crossbred

Origin and Domestication of Pigs

Pigs are nonruminant, even-toed ungulates and belong to suborder Suina which includes hippopotamuses, peccaries and pigs. All true pigs are members of the family Suidae which includes five living genera namely Sus, Babirousa (babyrusa), Hylochoerus (giant forest hog), Phacochoerus (warthog), and Potamochoerus (bushpig and red river hog) that can be called as pigs. European breeds are believed to be descendants of the European wild pig Sus scrofa and Asiatic or oriental breeds originated from the Eastern Asiatic banded pig, Sus vittatus a successor of Sus crystatus.

Clean meat production from animals has been a difficult task since ancient times. Now it has become easier due to the joint efforts of Veterinarians and progressive animal owners. For clean meat production, with healthy animals, it is essential that care is given to their better management, better breeds, good ration and arrangements for preventing diseases are made. Meat from diseased animals is of inferior quality and unfit for human consumption.

            Meat is a very useful edible material, which is used for its high nutritive value with a good taste. Due to these nutritive elements, many microorganisms come in contact with the meat and they may contaminate it and change its natural structure and composition. As a result it produces many types of toxic and bad odour substances.

            Meat has an important place amongst human foods. Meat has many pecularities for which it is used in many parts of the world and by people of different religions. Many people prefer meat because of its better taste and/or odour. Often, it is observed that people consuming meat do not prefer vegetarian foods. The active consumer always gives more importance to the nutritive elements in meat. And at the time of bying meat, they prefer taking complete meat.  Allmost in all countries of the world, few selected and common animal species are slaughtered for meat production.

• Opportunities: external chances to make greater sales or profits in the environment.

These beans are mostly found in China, Korea, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Indonesia, and are not frequently cultivated for commercial purposes. While working on a research project at the Stanford University sometime around 1960s to 1970s, Albert Humphrey developed an analytical tool to evaluate the strategic plans and find out why corporate planning failed. He coined this technique as SOFT analysis where –
• S stood for what things are Satisfactory at present,
• O denoted what Opportunities can be explored in the future,
• F meant the Faults in the present and
• T signified the Threats that could surface in the future.
While the majority agrees that SOFT is the predecessor of SWOT, some people believe that the concept of SWOT analysis emerged separately and has nothing to do with SOFT.
How SWOT evolved from SOFT?
The first mention of the term SWOT can be traced back to the Long Range Planning seminar held in Zurich in 1964. In this seminar Urick and Orr proposed the concept of SWOT analysis which was derived from SOFT by replacing the F for faults with W for Weaknesses. With its initial promotion in the Britain, the concept soon gained recognition among strategic planners and management consultants the world over. The new interpretation of SWOT, the way it is used these days, differs slightly from that of SOFT.

Strengths
• Poultry farming generates early and regular income and has shorter generation interval.

A variety of enterprises coming up through SHG in rural sector may or may not be successful. SWOT provides basic direction for entrepreneurship at any level for benefit of the practitioners. Strategic planning is how an organisation determines how to allocate its resources to pursue its strategy or direction. Based on an assessment of the internal and external environments within which an organisation operates, strategic management is concerned with developing and implementing an organisation’s long-term goals for its stakeholders.

When it comes to strategic planning and management, the SWOT analysis (or SWOT matrix) is a tool that can be used to determine a company’s competitive advantage by analysing its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Situational assessment or situational analysis is another name. TOWS and WOTS-UP are two other acronyms based on the same components.

Nitrogen is the most important plant nutrient for increasing crop productivity. A few prokaryotic microorganisms are able to fix N2 directly mediated by enzyme nitrogenase. Annual biological nitrogen fixation (Table 96) is estimated to be around 175 million metric tonnes per year of which about 139 million tonnes (79%) are accounted for by terrestrial fixation (Burns and Hardy 1975).

The nitrogen fixers involved are metabolically diverse but the process is similar and depends upon (1) nitrogenase (Nase) enzyme complex (ii) a high energy requirement (ATP) (iii) anaerobic conditions for nitrogenase activity (iv) source of strong reductant.

The symbiotic process is known to be one of the important contributors to the nitrogen cycle both from agricultural and ecological points of view. The soil bacteria of the genus Rhizobium colonizes and forms nodules on the root of leguminous plants such as clover, lucerne (alfalfa), pea, chickpea, pigeonpea, beans, groundnut, Vigna species etc.

The nitrogen uptake in legumes by some unknown process was demonstrated through agronomic experiments by J.B. Boussigault in 1838 which was opposed by Liebig and others. However, Hellriegel and Wilfarth’s experiments (1886-88) clearly showed that the growth of non-leguminous plants, barley, oats etc. was directly proportional to the amount of nitrate supplied while in case of leguminous no such relationship existed and growth of the leguminous plants picked up in some cases after the seedling stage. Beijerinck (1888) isolated the bacterium from the root nodules in pure culture which lead to study their morphological characteristics and physiology.

INTRODUCTION

The damages caused by tsunami (2004) along the coastlines of most of the South Asian countries are indelible not only from the minds of the coastal population but also from the heart of the entire humanity. The worst affected in the disaster are the fishing community. Many of their mechanized and un-mechanized boats and catamarans were converted to useless debris and garbages by the heartless tsunami. When their settlements themselves were swallowed even with out chewing, nothing to talk about their fishing nets which were just blown off by the ferocious tsunami. In addition, the infrastructure facilities like roads, communication systems, water and power supply were also incalculably damaged. Next to fishermen community, the affected souls were the farmers whose cultivable lands were turned into marine wet lands with swimming and tossing fishes. The Indian subcontinent was facing such onslaughts of various natural disasters periodically but our morale always stood by our side prohibiting us declaring them as national calamities for getting international aids. Specifically in this case, the central and state governments, NGOs and Voluntary Organizations have risen phenomenally to help the affected who were in need. Despite best efforts taken to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people, the tsunami has seedled some societal issues / syndrome, which may take long years to settle; it may not settle too. The paper discusses some of such issues gulled out through the interview conducted amongst various cross sections of the affected community.

Synergists are chemicals that significantly increase the toxicity of an insecticide while being nearly non-toxic on their own. Thus, non-toxic chemicals that contribute to the increased toxicity of insecticides are referred to as synergists. Many chemical substances have the potential to synergize with poisons. Some enzyme inhibitors work well synergistically by inhibiting enzymes that metabolize pesticides, particularly in insecticide-resistant strains. When mixed with other insecticides, some insecticides increase the toxicity of the latter at non-toxic dosages. When a mixture is more harmful than expected based on the sum of its separate efficacies when administered alone, the interaction between substances is known as synergy. Antagonistic interactions among components reduce a mixture’s efficacy.

Synergism can also develop between two or more poisons. Several statistical methods have been proposed to quantify the synergy of both non-toxic and hazardous substances. Toxin interactions are assessed using bioassays, which involve mixing toxicants (two or more) in a specific ratio. The combination is then used to prepare serial dilutions. Alternatively, the poisons can be supplied sequentially in the same amounts as in the mixture. Bioassays are also used to determine the dose-mortality response of each toxin on the same insect strain. The data are subjected to probit analysis, and the toxin interactions can be evaluated using the statistical methods listed below.

Surveillance data from the World Health Organization’s GLASS initiative highlights the scale of the problem: resistance to third-generation cephalosporins in Escherichia coli and methicillin in Staphylococcus aureus has reached alarming levels in dozens of countries, complicating the management of common infections and raising the stakes for therapeutic innovation. In veterinary settings, the crisis is equally urgent. Resistance has emerged across nearly all major antibiotic classes used in livestock, poultry, and companion animals. Contributing factors include widespread antibiotic use in agriculture, limited diagnostic stewardship, and the ease with which resistance genes spread within and between microbial communities. These trends not only threaten animal health and productivity but also increase the risk of zoonotic transmission, blurring the boundaries between veterinary and human public health. Global health authorities have long warned of a “post-antibiotic era” - a time when conventional antibiotics may no longer offer reliable protection against bacterial pathogens. Recent reports suggest that this era is no longer hypothetical. If current trajectories continue, drug-resistant infections could account for up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050, with staggering economic consequences. To address this escalating threat, researchers are exploring alternative therapeutic strategies that go beyond traditional antibiotics. Among the most promising are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and bacteriophage therapy. AMPs are naturally occurring molecules found in animals and other organisms, known for their broad-spectrum activity and rapid bactericidal effects. Their ability to disrupt bacterial membranes through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions makes them less susceptible to resistance mechanisms that target conventional antibiotics. Bacteriophages - viruses that specifically infect and lyse bacteria - offer a complementary approach. Phage therapy is highly targeted, capable of eliminating specific bacterial strains while sparing beneficial microbiota. Phage’s can also evolve alongside bacterial populations, potentially outpacing resistance development. In veterinary medicine, phage-based treatments have shown promise in managing infections in poultry, swine, cattle, and companion animals, particularly where antibiotic options are limited or ineffective. The combined use of AMPs and bacteriophages represents a novel and potentially synergistic strategy for tackling AMR. By leveraging distinct mechanisms of action and delivery profiles, these agents may enhance therapeutic efficacy, reduce resistance selection pressure, and improve outcomes across a range of veterinary applications. This chapter explores the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic challenges associated with delivering such combination therapies, with a focus on optimizing their use in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Modern agriculture faces the challenge of increasing food production while minimizing environmental impacts like soil degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. To address these issues, integrating microbial biotechnology with nanotechnology has emerged as a promising approach. Nanoparticles (NPs) with plants and microbes, enhances nutrient uptake, plant growth, and stress tolerance. Bioinoculants, which contain beneficial microorganisms, promote plant health, but are limited by stability and environmental factors. The synergistic use of nanoparticles and bioinoculant offers a novel solution, improving crop yield, nutrient uptake, and resilience to stress, reducing dependence on chemical inputs. This integration supports the development of more resilient, resource-efficient, and environment-friendly agricultural systems.

In the twenty-first century, the importance of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors to global food security and nutrition has become more and more evident. The global population is anticipated that there will be roughly 10 billion people (by 2050) on the planet, which will lead to an increase in food demand. Over the past few decades, the aquaculture sector acted as the most promising food-producing sector (FAO, 2022). According to reports, the aquaculture sector in India has suffered significant harm from the recurrent occurrence of infectious diseases with bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens, which has hindered sustainable development. Reports have surfaced regarding the emergence and reappearance of diseases in aquaculture (Bondad-Reantaso et al., 2005). Over the past twenty years, there has been a major increase in the occurrence of pathogens and disease emergence and reemergence. In addition, it has become clear that diseases transcend the boundaries of land and water when they first appear or reappear. This means that the transfer of germs and the dissemination of diseases are closely associated with fish movement, particularly with live fish intended for aquaculture or ornamental seafood sector. Therefore, biosecurity measures are essential for safeguarding our food supply, the environment, and both human and animal populations from the introduction and spread of various diseases (Austin et al., 2022; Austin, 2023).

The communication system provides the forecaster with a large mass of figures; the next step is to put them into a suitable form for study. This is done by plotting the observations on a large outline map which in popular term is called a “Weather map” technically a “Synoptic chart” simplified synoptic charts appear in some newspaper.

A chart or map on which meteorological data presented and analysed is called a synoptic chart. Synoptic means having the same view point. The representation of the meteorological data in synoptic chart are atmospheric wind, temperature, pressure, cloud, precipitation, dew point etc., over a long area at a given local standard times.

ABSTRACT

Nature provides a wealth of information on natural products with novel architectur and very high medical potential. Given the enormous medical and economic impac of natural product pharmaceuticals we have obvious reasons to improve the activitie of the existing compounds and to discover new metabolites. Although natural product are a proven source of drug candidates they exert powerful physiological effects in one form or other. Only a small proportion of these compounds satisfy the rigorou criteria set by the pharmaceutical company. Also the amount of active compound isolated from the natural products is so small that it is difficult to exploit it in an industrial level. So there arises a need to synthesise synthetic compounds which ma be tested for bioactivity from the easily available starting materials by a simpl methodology. The quest for finding new drugs against various diseases such as AIDS cancer etc. act as a motivating factor in designing synthesis of new materials. In thi way most of the compounds synthesized can be tested for bioactivity to be effectivel used to fi ht a ainst certain dreadful diseases.

We have synthesised some polycyclic heterocycles through cycloaddition methodology and explored the bioactivity of the products. These molecules have basic skeleton of the natural products and possess the biological properties of the natural products. Thus they may be termed as pseudo natural products. These compounds are screened for antifungal and antibacterial activities and are found to possess bioactivity.

The concept of nanoscience was first described in 1959 by physicist Richard P. Feynman in a lecture to the American Physical Society and it was Japanese researcher Norio Taniguchi who coined the term nanotechnology in 1974 to describe precision engineering with tolerances of a micron or less. Eric Drexler in 1986 in his book Engines of Creation, brought nanotechnology into the public domain.

Techniques have been developed to produce nanotubes in sizeable quantities, including arc discharge, laser ablation, high pressure carbon monoxide (HiPCO),andchemicalvapor deposition (CVD).Mostof these processes take place in vacuum or with process gases. CVD growth of CNTs can occur in vacuum or at atmospheric pressure. Large quantities of nanotubes can be synthesized by these methods; advances incatalysis and continuous growthprocessesare making CNTs more commercially viable.

Introduction

Application of edible coatings is promising to improve the quality and extend shelf life of fruits and vegetables (Lin et al., 2011). Chitosan, a versatile biopolymer derived from deacetylation of chitin had been widely applied in the fresh-keep field owing to its good biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial activity and capacities to form film (Lin et al., 2011).

The most commonly used technique has been discussed and we have tried to generalize the type of particle that can be synthesized by each of these methods. Though it is not a rule that is applicable to all cases but it can be applied to most cases.

Polymerization Radical Polymerization

The polymerization could be a free radical polymerization or an atom transfer radical polymerization. The process of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is better than the free radical polymerization as control of molecular weight and size of the particle can be achieved. The coating of polymer on silica nanoparticles is generally done by ATRP. The surface of the silica particle is modified with a suitable initiator.
