Abstract

This chapter explains the cooperation which create social relations that help individuals achieve goals that they could not achieve alone. They also help farmers benefit from economies of scale and reduce risks, and empower their members economically and socially by involving them in decision-making processes.

Poor quality of water is one of the important factors causes gradual accumulation of salts on the ground or in the root zone of crops leads to saline and alkaline condition. This results in loss of permeability, toxicity and anaerobic conditions. In salt affected soils plants face constraint to derive their nutrients at the required rate due to high soil moisture tension, which affects adversely the crop growth and productivity.

10.1 Causes of Salt Problems

The following are the reasons for causing the soils become saline or alkaline.
1. Rise in water table: A rise in water table and high evaporation and transpiration rates with poor drainage lead to build up dissolved salts.
2. Quality of irrigation water: Irrigation water contains the dissolved salts exceeding certain limit cause accumulation of salts in soil profile.

Introduction

India has been an agricultural economy since its inception. Several mechanisms are used in agribusiness, such as forward and backward linkages with secondary and tertiary sectors, such as manufacturing and service sectors. Opportunities in agriculture and related sectors can be identified at various stages of the farming process. Generally, agribusiness opportunities exist at the input stage, the farming stage, the value chain, the output processing and marketing stage, and the related services stage. As a result of globalisation and a more interconnected global market, the scope and potential of agribusiness opportunities is expanding. For entrepreneurs, there are numerous potential opportunities. Many different inputs are required in the agricultural process, such as seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and innovative and localised farm technology. As a result, the aforementioned areas create agribusiness opportunities in developing and producing these inputs.

3.1 Introduction

The sun emits electromagnetic radiation, which is referred to as solar radiation. Every location on the Earth’s surface receives some sunlight during the course of the year, but the amount of solar radiation varies. On a daily basis, we see much less energy from the sun than it emits and incident upon the earth. In an hour and a half, the amount of sunlight that reaches the surface of the earth is enough to provide enough energy for an entire year. 

4.1 Introduction

With the birth of the new millennium and the advent of Information and Communication Technology, the outlook of academia towards research has completely metamorphosed into a more productive and vibrant activity. Digitalization of data, the convergence of new and challenging insights in one’s own research fields at the world-wide-web and technology generation are being made faster and more reliable. With the arrival of Laptops and Smartphones simultaneously with the facility Wi-Fi, the demand for information of any kind has become unquantifiable! The academic world is no exception, indeed! Such a pang of hunger for information led to considerable investments in infrastructure development. The virtual, electronic, automated world became inseparable from academic and research institutions. Small wonder that with these, the pressures on the institutional and specialized and dedicated libraries are on the increase.

4.1 Introduction

In many surveys, information on an auxiliary (supplementary, ancillary or apriori) variable x, which is highly (positively or negatively)correlated with the variable y under study, is readily available and can be used for improving the sampling design. Stratified sampling and probability proportional to size (p.p.s) schemes are two examples of improved sampling designs, in which the use of data on auxiliary variable has been made. However in both the schemes, it implies that the information on auxiliary variable on individual sampling units is available prior to presentation of sampling design. In case, data on auxiliary variable for individual sampling units are not available but only the aggregate value for all units of auxiliary variable is available, the two schemes can not be used. In such a situation, the aggregate data on auxiliary variable can still be used at the time of estimation of parameters under consideration, provided the data on auxiliary variable for the sampled units can be easily obtained at the time of recording the values of the study variable.

Peas and beans belonging to the family Fabaceae (Syn. Leguminosae) are delicious and preferred vegetables grown throughout the world. These include cool season vegetables like pea, French bean, lima bean, broad bean and tropical vegetables like cowpea, hyacinth bean, winged bean, jack bean, sword bean etc. These are integral components of sustainable agriculture due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and to improve soil properties. Legume vegetables are rich in protein and essential amino acids and have significant role in combating malnutrition among poor people and vegetarians.

Common features of legume vegetables are summarized below:

1. All legume vegetables are self-pollinated due to cleistogamous nature. Flowers are zygomorphic with papilionaceous corolla, mono-adelphous or di-adelphous stamens.
2. All are direct sown crops and do not respond to transplanting. Since seed size is comparatively bigger and they are closely planted, a high seed rate is required for most of crops.

6.20. Role of Micro Nutrients in Vegetable Production 6.20.1. Born 6.20.1.1. Importance Warington first demonstrated the essentiality of boron in plants in 1923 in broad bean (Vigna fava L.). Boron markedly affects nitrogen uptake and the metabolism of nitrogen compounds. The protein contents of young leaves decrease and soluble nitrogen compounds, particularly nitrate accumulate under the condition of severe boron deficiencyBoth with and without boron added, nitrate reductase activity was obviously higher with Ca (NO3 )2 than with (NH4 )2 SO4 . With boron added, nitrate reductase activity in leaves increased from the basal to the top parts of the plant.

Introduction According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the world population increase from 7.7 to 9.7 billion by 2050; therefore, a growing demand for seafood and the production gap is anticipated due to stagnating fish supply from capture fisheries. The production gap may be curtailed by intensification of aquaculture practices rather than horizontal expansion. Intensive farming practices such as cage and pen culture in open water have gained significant attention and are related to the efficient utilization of untapped potential water bodies and of existing resources.

The hazardous toxic metals like cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr), which have detrimental health effects, are naturally discharged into the atmosphere in various ways viz., industrial wastes, anthropogenic sources, etc. Heavy metal pollution of the atmosphere has become a frightening ecological concern that has created serious threats to the ecosystem. These metals have been identified as group I, human carcinogens due to their persistence in the surroundings and bio-magnification in biological systems. Thus, the removal of heavy metals from the atmosphere becomes a serious matter from the biological and environmental point of view. In the past following techniques adoptedfor toxic heavy metals remediation were classified are bioadsorption, ion exchange, membrane filtration, flotation, and solvent extraction techniques.

Soil is a dynamic natural body of the uppermost layer of earth’s crust produced by the transformation of mineral and organic substances on the earth’ s surface under the influence of environmental factors over a long period. It is the most basic of all natural resources upon which all living forms on the terrestrial ecosystem directly and indirectly depends. However, soil resources are finite, nonrenewable, fragile and heterogeneous in space and time. As a component of pedosphere, it occurs as interface between the lithosphere and atmosphere and strongly interacts with biosphere and hydrosphere (Figure 1 & 2).

General Aspects About Insects

‘Insects’ are almost ubiquitous. They are found all over the world, in the icy regions of the poles, deserts, forests, mountain peaks, oceans and even in oil wells. They can adopt themselves to any climatic conditions and can live in any habitat where food is available. Insects are mostly small, air-breathing organisms of the animal world. Most of the insects live freely in nature. Many species are wild and harmless to human beings. Many are beneficial because of their role in the ecosystem. Some are a part of the food chains of wild creatures, while others through predation and parasitism hold in check many other species of insects. Insects also play a vital role in pollination. Relatively only a few species are harmful to man and are his chief competitor on earth.

The last century has witnessed a global change in agricultural practices. From high dependency on external input agriculture, the world is now shifting towards low external input sustainable agriculture (LEISA). The history of dustbowl devastation in 1930s in America has put agricultural practices, tillage in particular, to question (Friedrich et al., 2012). Traditionally, tillage was believed to be a primary farm operation for preparing a good seedbed, nutrient mobilization, weed management, moisture availability, crop residue incorporation (Hobbs et al., 2008), thereby improving the overall soil health with increased production (Farooq et al., 2011a). The dust bowl devastation of 1930s gave rise to the concept of protecting soil by reducing tillage operation and maintaining ground cover, popularized as conservation tillage (Friedrich et al., 2012). Economic and ecological sufferings caused by the disastrous droughts in USA during 1930s drove the shift towards conservation agriculture (CA) (Haggblade and Tembo, 2003).

8.1 Introduction

Cartilaginous fishes have ventrally placed mouths with teeth in several series. They possess rigid dorsal fins and placoid scales. They have five pairs of gill clefts opening individually to the exterior, a lower jaw articulated with the upper jaw and upper jaw not fused to the skull, no swim bladder, an operculum, an endolymphatic duct and a heterocercal or homocercal tail. It shows internal fertilization, meroblastic cleavage and direct development.

Elasmobranchii includes a wide range of cartilaginous fishes. Dogfish sharks are commonly studied all over the world probably because of their suitable size for dissection.

8.1 Introduction

The management of greenhouse environments has become crucial in modern agriculture due to increasing concerns about climate change and the urgent need for sustainable farming practices. Greenhouses, also known as “controlled environment agriculture” facilities, have revolutionized the way we grow food by extending the growing season and allowing us to cultivate a wide range of plants in various climates. They achieve this by precisely regulating environmental elements such as temperature, humidity, light, and carbon dioxide concentration, which are all crucial for optimizing plant growth and yield.

Introduction

Agriculture contributes a vital part within the financial stability of smallest emerging nations such as Pakistan as well. The economic system of Pakistan is fundamentally based upon agriculture (Govt. of Pakistan, 2004-2005). The total surface of Pakistan approximately 796,095 km2, of which 8.3 million km2 are uncultivated and 22 million km2 are farmed (Govt. of Pakistan 2015 2016). Despite an average yearly increase of 2.7%, agriculture contributes 21% of Pakistan’s GDP (Govt of Pakistan, 2004–2005). Farming is a sector whose fundamental and commercial models combine. Agriculture’s importance to the economy may be examined through three distinct perspectives: 1) as a source of nutritious food for the country and raw materials for internal industry; 2) as a way to generate currency from abroad and 3) as a source of products and services for local industries and the global market (Govt. of Pakistan, 2015-16).

Introduction

By enhancing microbial populations, enzyme activity, soil respiration, and microbial biomass, nano-black carbon is a novel method for the enhancement of soil biological characteristics. By reducing soil acidity and boosting soil fertility, nano-black carbon is believed to improve plant development. The application of nano-black carbon to agricultural soils can have a significant positive impact on plant productivity. In addition to potentially boosting soil resilience to climate change, nano-black carbon greatly boosted enzyme activity, microbial activity, and soil organic carbon retention.Due to a liming action, nano-black carbon has been proposed as a potential biotechnology to boost agricultural yields in acidic soils.

1. Land Degradation- Type, Factors, Distribution, Processes, and Impacts on Soil Productivity

A. Types of Land Degradation

1. Soil Erosion: Soil erosion, a pervasive form of land degradation, manifests through the detachment and transportation of soil particles by various agents like wind and water. Wind erosion is common in arid regions, where dry, loose soil is susceptible to being carried away by the wind. Water erosion, on the other hand, occurs through surface runoff and can lead to gully formation and the loss of fertile topsoil. This loss of topsoil directly impacts agricultural productivity by reducing nutrient availability and water retention capacity.

2.1. Introduction

Water plays a pivotal role in this earth system. The withdrawal of water for irrigation is about 70% of the global freshwater. Water use efficiency is less than 50% in many countries. It has been forecasted by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO, 2015) that global water requirements will be increased by 50% by the year 2050 to meet the demands of agricultural water use. This is so because food demand will be higher for the growing human population. We have entered into an earth system where everything living has evolved and developed (Cosgrove and Loucks, 2015). There has been a new geological scenario, some say Anthropocene (Crutzen, 2002; Williams et al., 2011). Consequently, freshwater will increasingly be a scarce and the costliest resource in the future, which needs to be managed properly.

Saccharides: A monosaccharide sugar or combination of sugars is called saccharides.

Saccharification: The process of breaking a complex carbohydrate (starch or cellulose) into its monosaccharide components is called saccharification.

Saccharimeter: A device (polarimeter) used for measuring the amount of sugar in a solution is called saccharimeter. It is also known as saccharometer. It is a hydrometer with a special scale.

Saccharin: A crystalline compound C7 H5 NO3 S that is unrelated to the carbohydrates, is several hundred times sweeter than sucrose, and is used as a calorie free sweetener.

Saccharomyces: It is one of the genus (Saccharomyces) of the family Saccharomycetaceae and is usually unicellular yeasts (brewer’s yeast) that are distinguished by their sparse or absent mycelium and reproduced asexually by budding.

Safe food: Food that provide maximum nutrition and quality while revealing a minimal hazard to public health and they assume any risk present to be minimal.

Safety: Safety is a component of quality. Many experts believe that food safety is the most important quality component since a lack of safety can result in serious injury and even death of the consumer.

Cole crops refers to vegetable crops originated from a common ancestor, colewort or wild cliff cabbage (B. oleraceae var oleraceae or Brassica sylvestris L.) and they belong to family Brassicaceae. They prefer low temperature for growth and development hence mainly grown as temperate vegetables in temperate and subtropical climatic zones. This group of vegetable includes cabbage, cauliflower, knol khol, brussels sprout, sprouting broccoli, kale, Chinese cabbage etc. They are Mediterranean vegetables since its centre of origin is considered to be Mediterranean region. Later on, it spread into different parts of the temperate and subtropical countries. In India, cultivation of cole crops was started in the hills where temperate climate prevails and in states like Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Karnataka as cool season crop. But with the introduction of tropical types which are more tolerant to high temperature cultivation, cole crops are taking new pace in the cropping system of nontraditional areas. Cabbage and cauliflower became the most widely grown cole crops though cabbage, knol khol and curly kale were the first cultivated types and cauliflower came in the mid-way followed by brussels sprout and sprouting broccoli. The genetic designation of different vegetables under cole crops were described by several workers of which Linnaeus (1753) designated all the cole crops under one species, Brassica oleraceae and in 1969, Neuwhof classified them into different forms as B oleracea var capitata L. (cabbage); B oleracea var botrytis L. (cauliflower); B oleracea var gemmifera DC. (Brussels sprout); B oleracea var italica L. (sprouting broccoli); B oleracea var gongyloides L. (knol khol) and B oleracea var acephala DC. (kale).

Cole crops are usually biennial herbs with tap root system and erect stem. They are highly cross-pollinated and temperature sensitive for the production of head and curd. They are classified as early, mid and late varieties based on the temperature requirement and duration. Among this, early varieties are found to be high temperature tolerant and late varieties are low temperature tolerant. The flowering in cole crops requires a chilling temperature of 4-70C for about 6 8 weeks which transforms the juvenile phase into reproductive stage with exceptions of some early varieties of cauliflower and sprouting broccoli. Upon receiving the chilling temperature, the central stalk will develop into reproductive shoot or multiple reproductive shoots will be formed from the curd. The earlier is seen in cabbage, brussels sprout and kale whereas, the latter in cauliflower and sprouting broccoli. The seed production of cole crops belonging to temperate groups are mostly undertaken in temperate hills especially in the hills of Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh whereas, seeds of tropical types are produced in plains and lower hills of India.

Root crops are cool season vegetables growing for its fleshy root developed from the tap root and hypocotyl region. They are grown during winter in tropical and subtropical condition, throughout the year in hills and spring-summer in high altitude hills. The major root crops growing in our country include carrot (Umbelliferae), radish (Brassicaceae), beet root (Chenopodiaceae) and turnip (Brassicaceae). Two distinct types viz., asiatic or tropical types and European types present in these root crops except beet root. In beet root, European or biennial types only exist. The tropical types are annuals that does not require chilling treatment for flowering. Therefore, seed production of these types is taken up in plains but European types are biennials and they require vernalization treatment after vegetative phase for flowering. Hence, the seed production of biennial types is possible in hills. The seed productions of Asiatic varieties of root crops are done in Punjab, Haryana, U.P. and parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Whereas, the seed production of temperate varieties is done in Saproon valley, Kullu valley, Kalpa valley of H.P., Kashmir valley of J&K and selected location of Northeast region specially Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. The seed production of beet root is being done in high altitude hills of J&K. All the crops belonging to this group are similar in the cultural practices though they come under different family. All root crops prefer well drained loose and friable soil. Ridge or bed planting is mainly following in all root crops. They are direct sown crops and does not respond to transplanting. They are highly cross pollinated.

The two methods of seed production following in root crops are seed-to-seed method and root-to-seed method. The first method is followed for the production of truthfully labelled seed or certified seed as the seed yield will be more, but quality remains inferior to the second method. The breeder seed as well as foundation seeds require utmost quality hence root-to-seed is preferred for its production. In this method, the matured roots are harvested and the roots are inspected for its trueness. Only true-to-type roots are selected for replanting in the field for seed production and undesirable ones are discarded. The selection and rouging in seed crop are done on the basis of foliage characters and external and internal root characters (colour, shape, size, flesh colour, core size, pungency, indistinct rings etc.). The roots after selection are prepared for replanting by cutting one-third top (shoot) portion and one-fourth to one-half root cut. the prepared stecklings are replanted to obtain good yield of quality seeds. In case of turnip and beet, after selection, the tap root and tops of the roots are trimmed without injuring the crown portion and is replanted.

Introduction

Fisheries and Aquaculture remains to be an important source of food, nutrition, income, and livelihood to millions of people. Fish is an affordable and good source of animal protein, a good option to reduce hunger and malnutrition in the country. India has bountiful resources comprising inland, brackish and marine water along with diverse fish and shellfish species. Indian Fisheries sector evolved gradually over the years and became an important socio economic attribute for the nation. India is the third-largest fish and aquaculture producing country and accounts for about 16% of total inland and 5% of total global marine fish production respectively. In 2021-22, India’s total marine and inland fish production stood at 16.24 million metric tonne (MMT), which includes 12.12 MMT and 4.13 MMT from inland and marine sectors, respectively. The annual growth rate in the marine sector was observed at around 18.7 %, whereas inland sector achieved more than 7.76 % during 2021 22 ( Table 17.1).The fishery potential of the country has been estimated to the tune of 22.31 MMT out of which Marine fisheries potential is 5.31 MMT and Inland fishery potential is 17 MMT. (Table 17.3).

Marine fisheries activities are spread along the country’s long coastline (8118 km) and in the vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ 2.02 million km2). The inland resources are in the form of rivers and canals (0.19 million km), f loodplain lakes (1.0 million ha), ponds and tanks (2.43 million ha), reservoirs (3.15 million ha), brackish water (1.18 million ha), saline/alkaline affected areas (0.24 million ha), and such others etc., covering about 9 million ha, providing livelihood to 16 million (Table 17.2). In this direction sea cage culture may play an important role in rapid expansion of seafood production at global level. In present scenario, due to limited availability of fish fingerling we may not expand sea cage culture to the optimum level. Therefore, need of hour is to strengthen the available infrastructure and other needed backward and forward support system enhancing for fish seed production apart from developing market linkages with diversification of species.

Carbohydrates are the macronutrients consisting of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) atoms. In simpler terms, carbohydrates can be defined as polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or substances, which yield them on hydrolysis. The general formula of carbohydrates is Cn (H2 O)n , where n is the number of carbon atoms. In nature, carbohydrates are the most abundant biological molecules. In the human diet, carbohydrates are one of the main nutrients that provide energy to the body. The green plants, through the process of photosynthesis, synthesize the carbohydrates.

Classification of carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are also known as saccharides, originating from the Greek word sakcharon, which means sugar. However, not all saccharides have a sweet taste. Carbohydrates can be classified into three distinct groups: monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. The number of sugar units determines this classification.

Monosaccharides

Monosaccharides, or simple sugars, are the most basic carbohydrates. They are the monomers that serve as the building blocks for forming polymers or complex carbohydrates. Monosaccharides are the most simple carbohydrates possessing carbonyl groups, i.e., aldehyde (CHO) and ketone (C=O) groups with two or more hydroxyl (OH) groups. Monosaccharide has the generic formula Cn (H2 O)n, where n is the number of carbon atoms. Monosaccharides are sugars that cannot be hydrolyzed further to form simple carbohydrates. These crystalline solids without color dissolve in water but remain insoluble in non-polar solvents.

Abnormal milk: It is milk that is not smooth and homogenous but is flaky, ropy, stringy, slimy, watery, discoloured or bad flavoured (Plate 1 & 2).

Abrassive peeler: It is equipment comprising a rotating drum lined with carborandum (an abrasive material) in which certain vegetables like potato and ginger are tumbled and exposed to the abrasive action of the carborandum lining, thereby facilitating separation of peel from the vegetables (Plate 3).

Absinthe: It is green liqueur which is flavored with wormwood, anise, and other aromatic herbs (Plate 4). Its commercial production is banned in ma ny countries for health concerns.

Absolute alcohol: It is water free alcohol. It contains atleast 99 per cent pure alcohol by weight and obtained by digesting rectified spirit over quicklime and redistilling the same.

Absolute density: It is the ratio of weight of certain volume of a substance at 1oC to that of weight of same volume of water at 4oC.

Absolute humidity: Absolute humidity is defined as kg of water vapour per kg of dry air at a given temperature and pressure. Absolute humidity is the mass of water vapour divided by the mass of dry air in a certain volume of air at a specific temperature. The warmer air absorbs more water than cooler one. Absolute humidity is the measure of water vapour or moisture in the air, regardless of temperature.

Absolute pressure: It is equal to atmospheric pressure minus vacuum pressure (Plate 5).

Absolute zero: It is a theoretical temperature characterized by complete absence of heat and motion and equivalent to exactly -273.15°C or -459.67°F (Plate 6).

Introduction

The purpose of this e-book is to outline the main hazards in food production and processing that could influence the safety of foods and thus the health and wellbeing of consumers. The suggestive actions to restrain the formation of compounds or organisms that may threaten the safety of a food will be discussed along with the legal and regulatory framework.

“Safe Food Now for a Healthy Tomorrow”

Food is the third most basic human need, after air and water. Only when food is safe can it contribute to our food security and health. When food is not safe, people cannot thrive, hunger and poverty cannot be alleviated, and a healthy life is not possible. Food safety has a significant impact on human health, and food, which is essential for human survival, comes from plants and animals. Food safety is a core tenet of One Health.

This chapter gives an overview of the main hazards such as physical hazards, chemical hazards, biological hazards, and adulterants in different types of foods and how the hazards influence the safety of the food along with health and well-being of the consumers. The effective way of management of these hazards and different hazard limits set by the regulators such as FSSAI, USFDA, EU AND CODEX along with labelling requirements for the hazards has been discussed in this chapter.

5.1 Participatory Approaches to Watershed Management

Community Engagement Strategies: Exploring methods for involving local communities in decision-making processes, project planning, and implementation, including participatory rural appraisal (PRA), stakeholder consultations, and community meetings. Exploring methods for involving local communities in decision-making processes, project planning, and implementation is essential for promoting ownership, sustainability, and effectiveness of development initiatives within watershed areas. Here are key community engagement strategies:

a. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA): PRA is a participatory approach that involves community members in assessing their own needs, priorities, resources, and capacities. PRA techniques, such as transect walks, social mapping, seasonal calendars, and wealth ranking, enable communities to identify and analyze local issues, strengths, and opportunities. PRA fosters dialogue, builds trust, and empowers communities to take ownership of development processes.

b. Stakeholder Consultations: Conduct stakeholder consultations to engage a diverse range of actors, including community members, local leaders, government officials, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. Consultations provide opportunities for stakeholders to share their perspectives, knowledge, and concerns, and contribute to decision-making and project design. Stakeholder consultations ensure inclusivity, transparency, and legitimacy in development processes.

c. Community Meetings: Organize community meetings, village assemblies, or public forums to facilitate dialogue, consensus-building, and decision-making among community members. Community meetings provide platforms for discussing development priorities, reviewing project progress, and resolving conflicts collaboratively. They foster social cohesion, collective action, and community mobilization around shared goals and aspirations.

The case of the cottony cushion scale, Icerya purchasi, in California's citrus orchards serves as a seminal example of biological control's efficacy. The story of its control through the introduction of natural enemies is not only a landmark in biological control history but also a demonstration of ecological problem-solving.

Background and Impact

Icerya purchasi is a sap-sucking insect that infests a wide range of host plants but shows a particular fondness for citrus trees. The infestation is damaging as the scale excretes a sticky substance known as honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, impairing photosynthesis and weakening the plants. The severity of the infestation threatened the economic viability of the citrus industry in California during the 1880s.

3.1. Introduction

Various procedures performed on reptiles often necessitate chemical restraint or general anesthesia. Even routine tasks like physical examination and transportation can pose challenges, particularly with large or uncooperative reptilian patients. For safety reasons, venomous species are typically evaluated under chemical restraint. The respiratory anatomy and physiology of reptiles differ significantly from those of more familiar mammals, influencing their response to commonly used anesthetic agents. Historically, anesthetics recommended for reptiles had notable metabolic effects, but inhalant anesthesia has become more popular in recent times. Nonetheless, in species capable of anaerobic metabolism, induction with these agents may not be feasible (Girling 2013).

Trees have been used in cropping systems since the beginning of agriculture. Throughout the world, at one period or another in its history, it has been the practice to cultivate tree species and agricultural crops in intimate combination. In the tropics, human beings underwent a transition from hunting/gathering to the use of domesticated plants and livestock. As a part of the process, they cut down trees, cleared the debris by burning and sowed crops in the ash enriched soil. It was the ‘slash-and-burn’ agriculture, a primary forerunner of the present-day agroforestry and a practice that might have originated in the Neolithic period, around 7000 BC.

There are innumerable examples of traditional land-use practices involving combined production of trees and agricultural species on the same piece of land in many parts of the world. Trees were an integral part of these farming systems and they were deliberately retained on farmlands to support agriculture. These practices are now known as agroforestry. However, the ultimate objective of these practices was not tree production but food production.

Introduction

The cold chain is a meticulously managed series of actions using specialized equipment to ensure products remain within a specific low-temperature range from production to consumption (ASHRAE, 2024; IIR, 2024). This unbroken sequence encompasses refrigerated production, storage, and distribution activities, safeguarding the safety and quality of perishable and thermo-sensitive goods like agricultural commodities (such as fresh produce, meat, dairy, seafood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, flowers, wine, etc.), processed foods and pharmaceuticals (Aung and Chang, 2014; Awan, 2023). For climacteric fruits like bananas, custard apples, apples, pears, tomatoes, mangoes, and avocados, cold storage facilitates controlled ripening, extending the time between harvest and consumption. Cold chain management, integral to the overall supply chain, requires expertise in maintaining temperature, air quality, and adherence to regulatory standards. Any disruption in this process can lead to product spoilage and financial implications (FAO, 2019). The management of the cold chain system is crucial for preserving the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of fruits from harvest to consumption (Kader, 2003).

The chapter focuses on presenting the outcomes and analysis of the research, aiming to offer ample information for reaching accurate conclusions. Within this chapter, tables and models are frequently employed to reinforce the textual content. The discussion section plays a crucial role in interpreting the research results appropriately and establishing connections with other pertinent studies.

The distribution characteristics of the variable Age (x1 ) reveals that the respondents’ ages range from a minimum of 27 to a maximum of 71. The average age is 48.675, suggesting that the majority of respondents fall into the middle-age category. The standard deviation is 11.574, indicating the degree of variability in the ages. Furthermore, the coefficient of variance (CV) is 23.779 percent, indicating a high level of consistency in the distribution pattern of the variable.

The distribution pattern of the variable Family size (x3 ) shows that the family size ranges from a minimum person of 3 to a maximum of 10 persons. The average family size is 10.125 persons. The standard deviation is 1.397. The coefficient of variance (CV) is 23.882 percent which indicates a high level of consistency in the distribution pattern of the variable.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) dominate the Indonesian economy. These enterprises account for around 99 percent of all businesses in Indonesia and employ more than 95 percent of the total workforce across the country. They should be the primary engines of economic growth, although they generate only approximately 56 percent of the overall gross domestic product (GDP) of Indonesia. Around 80 percent of MSMEs are in the trading sector involved in buying and selling existing products/services). Within the MSME group, micro and small enterprises (MSEs), including those in the manufacturing industry, called micro and small industries (MSIs), i.e. business units with up to a maximum of 500 million Indonesian rupiah (IDR), are the ones that receive the most attention from the Indonesian government because they account for almost 99 percent of total MSMEs. So, compared to medium and large industries (MLIs), MSIs are the largest job creators in the country. These enterprises also have high resilience in various previous crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Their high resilience has played a role as a cushion for the economy because of their ability to survive periods of pressure and grow back faster and higher after pressure.

A scientific experiment is a planned research to obtain new facts or to confirm or refute the results of previous experiments. Research is usually conducted in a controlled environment to study the effect of one or more variables on observations. The objective of research may be to answer a question, verify a hypothesis, or estimate the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable. After stating the research problem, we need to outline the methodology (or materials and methods) of the research, which includes developing an experimental design.

Scientific experiments are conducted to study the causal relationships between independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s). The researcher manipulates one or more independent variables and measures their effect on one or more dependent variables. Designing an experiment is planning an experiment. It is a complete sequence of steps taken before experimenting to ensure that appropriate data are obtained to perform a data analysis to get valid inferences about the problem. It must be seen that the data collected are relevant to the problem investigated. E.g., studying the effect of breed, age, feed, etc. on milk output. Here, the objects like breed, age, feed, etc. are called treatments. That is, any specific experimental conditions (like the addition of feed additives, new feed formula, etc.) applied to the experimental units are called treatments. The basic objects on which the experiment is done are called experimental units (E.g., a bird, an insect, an animal). However, the responses in all the experimental units receiving the same treatments may not be similar, due to the inherent differences in the experimental units, called experimental error, caused by extraneous factors.

An animal disease is an economic process in the farming system, as it consumes a considerable amount of scarce economic resources that would have been otherwise productively utilized by the animals and results in negative benefits to society. Hence, while measuring the losses attributable to animal diseases, the manifestation of such losses and the factors influencing such losses may also be identified, which require modelling the ways by which the negative effects of the diseases are exhibited. A description of such models and their procedures is essential to understand the comprehensive effects of diseases. We will list and describe such models and tools in this chapter.

11.1 CORRELATION ANALYSIS

While simple descriptive statistical tools are adequate to estimate the economic effects of animal diseases, these tools cannot measure the nature and strength of the relationships between two or more variables. However, the statistical knowledge can effectively be used to understand Various statistical measures studied so far, like measures of central tendency and dispersion and skewness, relate to one variable only. However, there are many situations where there are several problems involving the use of two or more variables. Although correlation analysis is only a bivariate technique like t-test, ANOVA, and Chi square test, we will briefly see about correlation in this chapter, as it is also a part of multivariate analysis. The first step is to determine which bivariate analytical tool we need to adopt to test the study hypothesis.

Horticulture sector, comprising fruits, vegetables, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic crops, mushroom, spices and plantation crops, had witnessed phenomenal growth in production and productivity during the last two decades. Resultantly, horticulture in India is recognised as one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. The production has reached to 351.92 million tonnes in 2022-23 as compared to 231 million tonnnes in 2010. Progressive urbanization, increased spendable income and awareness for balanced and nutritious food have contributed towards increasing demand of horticulture produce. The increasing demand coupled with higher income returns per unit area has triggered this growth pattern, which has been largely possible due to policy environment to support horticulture both for research and development.

Coconut, arecanut and palmyrah, which hold significant cultural and historical importance in India, have been the primary focus of cultivation efforts. Cocoa, a relatively recent addition to India, serves as a companion crop to coconut and arecanut, contributing to the economic well-being of farmers nationwide. However, the current situation emphasizes the crucial role of value addition and product diversification in stabilizing prices. Despite the initial stages of value addition in India’s palm crops, recent innovations and established value chains have the potential to empower farmers as entrepreneurs, thereby augmenting their income. Moreover, the value-added products from these palms have enormous export potential. This chapter explores the advancements in value-added products and the diversification of coconut, arecanut, palmyrah, and cocoa, providing insights into opportunities for cottage or small-scale industries.

The term ‘mycorrhizae’ was coined more than a century ago (Frank 1885) describing that the roots of most plants are colonized by fungi and transformed into fungus roots organ. Mycorrhizae result from a mutualistic symbiosis between plant roots and certain fungi. Roots of most flowering plants live in mutual symbiosis with mycorrhizae which bio-tropically colonise the root cortex and extra-metricial mycelia help the plant to obtain plant nutrients from soil (Barea, 1991).

These fungi are ubiquitous in soil and are found in the roots of many Angiosperms, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes and Thallophytes (Mosse et al., 1981). The mycorrhizal fungi perform the function of root hairs. The fungus takes carbohydrates from the plant and in turn supplies the plants with nutrients, hormones and protects it from root pathogens. The dependency of fungal species on host plant ranges from obligate to facultative (Brundrett, 2002; Read and Perez-Moreno, 2003). The mycorrhizal plants have greater tolerance to toxic heavy metal, nigh soil temperature, soil salinity, unfavourable soil pH and to transplantation shocks.

They play an important role in increasing plant growth and nutrients uptake (Bagyaraj, 1992, VasanthaKrishna and Bagyaraj 1993). These fungi can be used to promote biotechnologically developed plant in soil (Varma and Schuepp 1994).

Formulation is a word that can be used in a lot of different ways, but at its core, it means putting things together in the right way, usually by following a formula. Insecticides come in different forms, which are called formulations. A formulation is just the way a product is used. The chemical or biological makeup of a pesticide and its active ingredient (also called the active substance) determine how it works on living things. Most of the time, the active ingredient is mixed with other things, and the product as it is sold will need to be weakened even more before it can be used. Formulation makes a drug easier to handle, store, and use. It can also have a big effect on how well it works and how safe it is.

Insecticides come in many different forms because the active ingredients vary in how easily they dissolve, how well they kill pests, and how easy they are to handle and move. The pesticide is made up of both active and non-active (used to be called “inert”) chemicals. The manufacturer will need to know the identity of the pest, as well as details about its feeding behavior, reproduction, and life cycle, in order to create an effective formulation. Manufacturers also take into account factors including surface and equipment type, runoff and drift rates, pest habits, and safety when formulating insecticides. Inactive materials (adjuvants/ additives) are often added to insecticides to make them stick to the application surface or spread out over leaves. There are solvents (liquids) that dissolve the active ingredient, carriers (liquids or solids) that aid in the delivery of the active ingredient, etc.. Boosting the efficacy of active ingredients requires additives, such as spreaders, stickers, wetting agents, compatibility agents, foaming agents, etc.

The process of vaccine development involves numerous stages from research, discovery, innovation, formulation, testing, mass production, logistics, deployment and administering the vaccine to the target population. The COVID-19 pandemic expedited the endeavour to develop vaccine worldwide that is unparalleled in history. In addition to the steps that were similar during the usual vaccine development process, it called for stronger collaborative teamwork with stricter deadlines during the pandemic due to the emergency situation that built up everywhere (in its spread as well as severity). Research was expedited, potential candidate vaccines were discovered and the proofs of concept were designed that paved the way for pre-clinical efficacy testing. Multiple-step clinical trials to ascertain that the vaccines were effective and safe at least for ‘emergency use’ in human subjects were carried out swiftly. The emergency usage regulatory approval and recommending the usage pattern involved accelerated review procedures. It immediately followed rapid scaling-up for increased production in order to meet the need to save as many human lives as possible across the globe. The approved vaccines were simultaneously evaluated for safety through dedicated pharmacovigilance systems. The future of vaccine development shall also focus on improving the worldwide access to vaccines, managing the virus variants and streamlining mass vaccination campaigns. Comprehending the research, development and administration phases to create and implement life saving vaccinations within the regulatory framework amid international health emergencies as encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic and the enormous collective endeavours are highlighted in this chapter.

Cauliflower, Brassica oleracea L var. botrytis under the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) having chromosome No. 2n = 2x =18 is the most popular vegetable among the cole crops, particularly in Asia. It is grown in all continents of the world,= of which Asia is the leading one followed by Europe and covers small acerages in North America, South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. India and China together have about 60 % of total cauliflower area of the world. Cauliflower is used in different curry and fry preparations with potato, garden pea, sweet pepper and other vegetables. It contains high quality proteins and good in stability of vitamin C after
cooking. Frozen products are also prepared from cauliflower. It is rich in minerals such as potassium, sodium, iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, etc.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
The cole crops have originated from the wild diploid species Brassica oleracea var. sylvestris mainly by mutation, human selection and adaptation. This wild species, a leafy kale-like plant which occurs in the northern shore of the Mediterranean Sea an along the lime cliffs in north-eastern England and North Sea is the progenitor of th cultivated kale and leafy non-heading cabbage. Probably kale was the first cole crop to have selected and adapted by man. From this leafy kale-like plant (Brassica oleracea var. sylvestris), other cole crops viz., kale, collard, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage have been descended.

By prioritizing technology integration, cold chain management, and regulatory compliance, dairy companies can establish a reliable and sustainable milk procurement system that meets both operational and quality standards.
India dairy sector depends on smallholder individual milk producers, each contributing between one to a few litres of milk per day. Typically, milk production takes place in rural areas, while the demand is concentrated in urban centres. However, rural producers often face significant marketing challenges due to the dispersed nature of milk production, scattered settlements, and inadequate supply infrastructure. Therefore, milk needs to be collected, transported, and marketed from villages to cities to ensure profitable returns for producers. Milk is usually collected from producers at designated collection points in rural areas, which serve a large number of small suppliers. This approach minimizes the need for individual chilling and storage facilities. Collection points should follow the same hygiene standards as dairy processing facilities. Milk should arrive at a chilling station within four hours of milking, especially in warmer climates. There, it must be quickly cooled to below 4°C to preserve its quality. Bulk milk coolers of required capacity are installed for the chilling and storage of milk at low temperature till it is transported to the processing plant.

Introduction
The nervous system in animals is a complex group of highly specialized cells capable of collecting and transmitting information in response to external stimuli via receptors and highly specialized sensory organs. It aids in the regulation of muscle coordination, the release of hormones, neurotransmitters, and other chemical mediators, all of which facilitate numerous bodily activities.
The nervous system is divided into two systems: the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system. Within these systems, there is another autonomic nervous system (ANS), which is distinguished by higher centers of the hypothalamus, midbrain, pons, and medulla, as well as tracts and nuclei in the spinal cord. The ANS is further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic
systems, which help maintain homeostasis and activate emergency mechanisms in response to external stimuli. The brain is normally covered by three meninges: piameter, arachnoid, and durameter. These meninges create three spaces: the subarachnoid space (between pia mater and arachnoid), the subdural space (between arachnoid and dura mater), and the epidural space (between dura mater and the ligamentum flavum in the spinal canal). The subarachnoid space includes cerebrospinal fluid, which is isolated from cerebral blood by the morphological and enzymatic activity of cells with tight junctions that regulate intercellular diffusion and solute exchange inside the cells. These cells form a barrier known as the “blood-brain barrier”.
The blood-brain barrier works as a selective permeable membrane, allowing only certain chemicals and medications to pass through while excreting essential components from the central nervous system via energy-dependent efflux pumps like p-glycoprotein. These proteins are encoded by genes such as ABCB1, and mutations in them can result in severe effects such as Ivermectin poisoning in the Colie breed of dogs. Similarly, it aids in the relative isolation of the neurological system from the immune system by establishing an immune-suppressive parenchymal milieu. However, various infections, trauma, and developmental defects can result in underdevelopment or damage to different cerebellar structures. As a result, depending on the portion implicated, it might cause changed behavioral changes in animals such as muscle incoordination, depression, and paralysis. These clinical symptoms may be excitatory.

The global economy has adversely been affected to a considerable extent due to weather related disasters like droughts, floods, heat waves and cold waves which are not uncommon in the recent past due to global warming and climate change. For the first time, the year 1998 was declared as the weather related disastrous year globally. The year 2015 was the warmest year globally, again. Such weather phenomenon of warming more and more year after year was noticed in the current decade as well when we look at 2023 and 2024. The year 2010 was the warmest year ever recorded, followed by 2009 in India. The occurrence of floods and droughts, cold and heat waves adversely affected the Indian foodgrains production to a large extent across the Country in one or other region as seen in 2014, 2012, 2009, 2004, 2002 and 1987. The cold wave in winter 2003- 04 across the Northeast region of the Country and the heat wave in summer 2004 across the same region are still in memory to understand the ill effects in agriculture/horticulture/poultry/inland fisheries sectors. Model simulations
indicate that a marked increase in rainfall and temperature over India would be seen during the current century. The maximum expected increase in rainfall is likely to be 10–30% over the Central India. Temperatures are likely to increase between 2 and 30Cby the end of 2100 A.D. However, steps taken towards the green energy across the world may yield results not to allow atmospheric global temperature beyond 1.5 to 20C. Greater number of high surges and increased occurrence of cyclones in post monsoon period along with increased maximum wind speed are also expected along the East Coast of the Country. The summer droughts and heavy rains leading to waterlogging, floods and landslides during the monsoon period is a threat to plantation crops which are predominantly grown in the Humid Tropics like Kerala (8°15` N and 12°50`N latitudes and between 74°50`E and 77°30`E longitudes).

Seed production in spices varies depending on the specific crop and its biological haracteristics. Below is an overview of the seed production methods for each of the spices you’ve mentioned:
1. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
• Propagation method: Ginger is propagated through rhizomes rather than true seeds. Selected healthy rhizomes are cut into pieces, each with at least one viable bud (eye).
• Planting: The rhizome pieces are planted in well-drained soil with high organic content.

Numerous illnesses have a detrimental effect on the health and productivity of livestock and are highly significant economically. Livestock illnesses have negative effects on producers, costing them money in upkeep, resources, and production.
Protozoal infections are a major contributor to the global burden of infectious diseases and have a profound effect on health, society, and the economy. Nearly one-sixth of the world’s population is at risk of dying from serious diseases like malaria (Plasmodium spp.), African sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma brucei), Chagas’ disease (Trypanosoma cruzi) and various forms of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis (Leishmania spp.). Although the burden of protozoal diseases primarily affects tropical and subtropical regions, environmental changes and ecological modifications brought about by both natural and manmade factors have had and are likely to continue to have a significant impact on the emergence and spread of these infections in high-income nations.
