Introduction

Seeds are regarded as carriers of new technology and serve as basic catalytic input for enhancing the agricultural production. Hence the timely availability of quality seeds of the right variety in adequate quantity decides the strength of an agricultural economy. The intensive crop improvement programmes have resulted in the development of large number of hybrids and high yielding varieties in many important crops. Today, the Indian seed industry is the fifth largest seed market in the world, accounting for 4.4 per cent of global seed market. In terms of global trade, India is almost self-sufficient in flower, fruits and vegetables and field crops seeds (Anonymous, 2015). Economy of crops depends on good crop variety. Farmers choose these verities based on good quality traits and satisfactory yield. Thus, it is always essential to do fidelity check of all plant variety. The genetic purity is one of the most important aspects of quality control. Seed quality includes good germination, purity, seed health and vigour. With the increase in seed industry, there has been a refinement in the techniques used for testing genetic purity or genuineness of seed purity. Methods for testing genetic purity include different morphological, chemical, biochemical and molecular markers. Under PPV & FR Act, DUS (distinctiveness, uniformity, stability) testing procedure is performed with morphological descriptors. However, in agriculture, biotechnology has found applications in checking of true to type of clones and variety identification programs using molecular and chemical markers. Markers that reveal polymorphisms at the protein level are known as biochemical markers, while DNA markers reveal polymorphisms at the DNA level.

Hypothesis testing is the statistical procedure used in order to accept or reject statistical null hypotheses. One of the major purpose for which we formulate the hypothesis is, to test the statistical significance of the relation, difference or variation etc. among given sample/s at a given point of time or at different time points.

Introduction
Some species of rod shaped bacteria e.g. E.coli, Ps. fluorescence, Bacillus subtilis are known to be motile. Bacterial motility is generally associated with the presence of hair-like appendages called “Flagella”. There are several ways for determining the motility of a culture such as the wet mount method, hanging drop method and a culture method (on semisolid medium). Bacterial cells in suspension also exhibit a vibratory or oscillatory movement without changing their relative position. This is termed ’Brownian Movement’ and it should not be confused for true motility of bacteria. In motility the cells change their relative position and move across the microscopic field in different directions.
1. The Wet Mount Technique
This is the simplest and quickest way to determine the motility of bacteria.

2. Broth culture of bacteria (E.coli, Ps.fluroscenes)
3. Cover glass
Procedure
1. Place a drop of organisms on clean glass slide and cover with a cover glass.
2. Examine the slide with phase contrast microscope or bright field microscope with reduced light under oil-immersion.

Test of pollen viability (extent of pollen viability) is important in pollination experiments to ensure fertility/seed setting. It is also important in monitoring state of pollens during storage in ecological/ taxonomic studies as well as during research on pollen biochemistry, genetics, stigma interactions, and incompatibility studies. Pollen viability refers to the ability of pollen to accomplish post-pollination events to achieve fertilization. Pollen viability test has gained importance particularly in plant breeding and hybrid seed production experiments/ practices. Pollen Viability Test

It is important to know the extent of viability of pollens used in pollination experiment, in finding fertility of a plant of interest, to monitor state of pollen on storage, in ecological/taxonomic studies, as well as in research on biochemistry, genetics, stigma interaction, incompatibility assay, etc. of pollen. Several pollen viability tests have been developed time-to-time. It is recommended to initially use different tests for a given pollen type to find out the most appropriate method that provides reliable result on pollen viability. It is important to note that every procedure requires standardization of protocol according to the sample used. Following different tests are used for assessing pollen viability.

1. In-vitro Pollen Germination Test

It is a simple, speedy, and quantitative test for assessing pollen viability. In this method, a collection/sample of pollen is germinated in vitro and observed under microscope. The percentage of germinating pollens (producing pollen tube) after appropriate treatment and a given period of time is determined. The percentage provides an index of viability of the pollen sample.

With increasing industrialization, water sources available for consumption as potable water are being adulterated with industrial, animal and human wastes. As a result water has become a formidable factor in disease transmission. Polluted water usually contains large amount of organic matter which forms nutritional base for growth and multiplication of microorganisms. Usually the water with non-pathogenic organisms, like autotrophs and saprophytic heterotrophs, are not of major concern, but presence of intestinal contaminants of fecal origin are of great concern. These pathogens are responsible for intestinal infection such as bacillary dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera and paratyphoid fever.

The detection of all the intestinal pathogens on a routine basis would be a tedious and difficult task, however, it would be easy to demonstrate the presence of some of the nonpathogenic intestinal organisms like Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis. These are always found in intestine but their detection confirms the contamination of water with fecal material. Such organisms are also called pollution indicator.

The pioneering German microbiologist, Robert Koch, identified a set of four conditions that need to be satisfied to establish that a particular organism is the causative agent of a particular disease. These conditions, known as Koch’s postulates, are:

1. The suspected pathogen must be found associated with the disease in all the diseased plants examined.

2. The organism must be isolated from the diseased tissue and grown in pure culture on nutrient media, with its characteristics described (non obligate parasites) or in a susceptible host plant (obligate parasites), and its appearance and effects recorded

Seed is a living entity (mature ovule) consisting of a tiny plant in embryonic stage along with the stored food protected by an outer layer known as seed coat. Seed is an important biological input in agriculture, which is economically important for successful crop husbandry. Cotyledons serve as the source of nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and oils) that not only nurture the plant at the early developmental (seedling) stages of plant but also the vegetarian (heterotroph) organisms. Being one of the important inputs in agriculture, viability of seed needs to be assessed to know the germination percentage of seeds used to raise a crop. Since viability of seeds may deteriorate on storage depending on the storage conditions. Therefore, often it becomes important to test viability/germinability and vigour of seeds before being used for raising a crop or conducting an experiment. In this chapter, we briefly discuss about the different methods which can be used for testing the viability of seeds.

Seed Viability

Seed viability can be defined as the capability of the seed to germinate and produce a normal seedling within a specified period. In other words, seed viability indicates how many seeds in a lot are alive and could develop into plants under appropriate field conditions. It is very important that most of the stored seeds are capable of germinating when sown in a field. They must possess higher viability at the beginning of storage and maintain it over the storage. A seed with high initial viability survives longer in storage; however, the viability deteriorates slowly at first and then rapidly as the storage prolongs. It is important to know the duration of storage after which a considerable decline in viability occurs under given storage conditions so that to take necessary action to revive the seeds. Excessive deterioration in vianility of seeds may lead to loss of the seed/material/ germplasm.

9.1 Introduction

The tests used to ascertain whether the differences between estimator and the parameter or between two estimators are real or due to chance are called tests of hypothesis or tests of significance. In other words, the procedures, which enable us to decide whether to accept or reject hypothesis, are called tests of hypothesis or tests of significance. The following terms are commonly used in testing of hypothesis

8.1 Statistical Hypotheses

in attempting to reach decisions about the populations, it is useful to make assumptions or guesses about the populations involved. When the assumption or statement about a phenomenon occurring under certain conditions is formulated as proposition it is called a scientific hypotesis. We can construct criteria by which a scientific hypothesis may be ‘the  yield of a new paddy variety will be 3500 kg per hectare’. In statistical language it may be stated as ‘the random variable (yield of paddy) is distributed normally with mean 3500 kg/ha’. Such a statement or proposition about the probability distribution of a random variable is called the statistical hypothesis.

The growing chemicalization of milk presents a great challenge to the dairy industry. A number of chemical compounds get entry into milk, intentionally or un-intentionally, through their direct or indirect usage for crop, animal; or dairy husbandry practices, as environmental contamination. Several of these contaminants may be naturally present on grazing grass or use as pesticides for green fodder or they may get entry through use of compounded animal feeds. These eventually get excreted into milk as residues and pose problems to food safety. The risk of health hazards arises from veterinary drugs, residual pesticides, heavy metals, detergents and micotoxins etc. It is therefore, become necessary to detect these contaminants in order to make food safe for human consumption.

Detection of Aflatoxin M 1 in Milk

Material requirements : Glass column(30 cm x 1 cm), Silica gel (63-200 µg particle size), volumetric flasks, beakers, micro pipette, HPLC equipment fitted with C 18 column(25 cm x 4.6 mm) and fluorescence detector.

Reagents: Sodium chloride solution (400g in 1000ml water), acetonitrile/water mixture (25:75), sodium sulphsate, chloroform, toluene/acetic acid mixture (9:1), acetonitrile/diethyle ether/hexane mixture (1:3:6), chloroform/acetone mixture (8:2), n-hexane and aflatoxin standard ampule.

Preparation of stock solution : Transfer contents from 2.5ml or 0.5ml ampoule, quantitatively, to 25ml or 50ml volumetric flask respectively. Rinse ampoule with small quantities of chloroform and collect rinsing into flask. Makeup the volume with chloroform, mix well and store at 5º C or below. These solutions will contain 1 µg per ml aflatoxin M1.

Working solution : Transfer 0.5ml of stock solution to a 10ml conical flask. Evaporate contents to dryness using inert gas. Dissolve residue in 10ml of acetonitrile/water mixture. Prepare series of dilutions containing 0.0025, 0.005, 0.01 and 0.025 µg/ml aflatoxin. Similarly treat 5ml of stock solution to give a concentration of 0.5 µg/ml.

It is a non-contagious, nonfebrile infectious disease of mammals caused by toxin of Cl. tetani and characterized by sposmodic contraction of skeletal muscles.

Etiology: It is caused by Cl. tetani. It is a Gm⁺, slender bacillus, 4-8μ X0.5μ in size. It has a straight axis, parallel sides and rounded ends. It occurs singly and occasionally in chains. The spores are spherical, terminal and bulging, giving the bacillus the characteristic 'drum stick' appearance. It is non-capsulated and motile by peritrichate flagella. Young cultures are strongly Gm+ but older ones may be Gm-. Cl. tetani is widely distributed in soil and in the intestine of man and animals. Soil may have good concentration O organisms if it is fertilized with animal manure. Some strains have been identified but they have same antigenic type of toxin and can be neutralized by single toxin. There are two types of antigen H (flagella) and O (somatic). The H antigen is thermolabile and O antigen is thermostable and responsible for spasms.

It is an obligatory anaerobe that grows only in the absence of O₂ It grows on ordinary media. Growth is improved by blood and serum but not by glucose. The spores are very much resistant and can persist in the soils for even years. The spores can be destroyed by boiling at 115°C for 30-60 min.

The organisms produce 3 types of toxins. The toxins are tetanospasmin (neurotoxin), tetanolysin (haemolysin) and fibrinolysin. Tetanolysin is a heat labile, O₂ labile haemolysin antigenically related to the O₂ labile haemolysin produced by Cl. welchii. This lysin is active against RBCs of several animal species. Tetanospasmin is responsible for clinical manifestation of tetanus. It is O₂ stable but relatively heat labile. It gets toxoided spontaneously or in presence of low concentration of HCHO. It is a good antigen and is specifically neutralized by the antitoxin. It exists in two forms. A monomer of MW 68,000 which is toxic and a dimer which is non-toxic but antigenic. The purified toxin is active in extremely small amounts and has an MLD for mice of about 50-75X10^-6 mg. Horse is the most susceptible animal. Guinea pig, mice, goats and rabbits are susceptible in that descending order. Birds and reptiles are highly resistant. Frogs which are insusceptible, may be rendered susceptible by elevating their body temperature.

Tetanus is a specific infectious disease caused by the exotoxin of tetanus bacilli, usually growing in necrosed tissues, absorbed by the motor end plates of the peripheral nerves, carried to the central nervous system and manifested as lockjaw and paroxysmal spasmodic contraction of other muscles.

Tetanus bacilli present in the soil especially one contaminated by faeces of a horse or of a similar animal, enters through some skin abrasions and remain localized at the site. These are thereafter removed by phagocytes but if any lacerated tissue is present, more so if contaminated by pyogenic bacteria, these multiply and manufacture a highly potent exotoxin which is absorbed through the motor nerve end-plates in the muscles carried to the motor cells of the central nervous system, the sensory ones not being affected.

The posterior root ganglia act as filter preventing the toxin from entering into the spinal cord, the anterior root is thus only affected.

Abstract

Food texture is one of the most widely measured quality attributes during postharvest handling, processing, and consumption. Given the subjectivity in human perception of food texture, texture measurement remains a complex exercise and thus presents both a charm and challenge for researchers and industry practitioners. For fresh foods such as fruit and vegetable, textural properties such as firmness are widely used as indices of readiness to harvest (maturity) to meet requirements for long term handling, storage and acceptability by the consumer. For processed foods, understanding texture properties is important for the control of processing operations suchasheating, frying and drying to attain desired quality attributes of the end product. Texture and viscosity measurement is one of the most common techniques and procedures in food and postharvest research and industrial practice. Foods are complex systems exhibiting various degrees of elasticity, viscosity, and plasticity. Because of its complex structure and mechanical behavior, objective measurements of food texture may be influenced by a variety of test conditions, including rate of loading, the magnitude of deformations imposed upon the material, geometry of the loading surface, and localized yielding within the product tested. Various approaches have been used to evaluate the sensory attributes of texture in foods. However, the high cost and time consumption of organizing panelists and preparing food limit their use, and often, sensory texture evaluation is applied in combination with instrumental measurement.

The process of converting the frozen semen to liquid state while retaining maximum semen quality is called thawing. The process of thawing is as important as freezing as there is equal probability of loss of semen quality in freezing and thawing. Therefore, great care should be taken while thawing to insure that it is done with minimum loss of sperm quality. There are two methods of thawing:

1.    Rapid thawing

2.    Slow thawing

The effectiveness of each method of thawing depends upon the extender composition and freezing procedure. With any thawing procedure, the recommendations of the semen supplier should be followed. The thumb rule is that rapid freezing rates require rapid thawing.

There is a great need to reduce the input costs and at the same time improve the farm productivity in a sustainable manner. A model has been worked out based on a number of field demonstration studies in different parts of India, Africa and Far Eastern countries. A model in which input cost can be reduced by nearly 20 percent and at the same time the crop production can be enhanced upto 20 percent is possible and can be a boon to farmers in most parts of the world. This is the model, which can be easily adopted in an evolutionary way. As suggested by Jonathan Foley (BOX – 1), use of high-tech, precision farming systems, as well as approaches borrows from organic farming, we can boost farm productivity substantially.
Among 8 millennium goals, eradication of poverty and hunger and environmental sustainability are perhaps the most prominent and complementary. The Green Revolution changed India from (and many other countries) from being food deficit to food sufficient / surplus state. Time is now for a new and Sustainable Revolution.
If we look at the challenge that agriculture sector has to face during the next few decades, it is clearly to double the food production by 2025 and triple it by 2050 on less per capita land, with less water and under environmentally challenging conditions.
Let us look at the current scenario and some major developments.
• Indian farmers spend nearly Rs.2 Lakh crores (1 Lakh = 100000& 1 Cr
= 10 Million) on inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides.
• Nearly Rs.50,000 crores goes as fertilizer (chemical) subsidy.
• Excessive use of chemical fertilizers in India hasreduced soil fertility and food production (Green Peace & Vishwa Bharti report – 2009). Fertilizer use efficiency is drastically declining. (It has already come down from 19 Kg food grains per kg fertilizer in mid 60s to 12 kg/kg in 2007).
• Our soils are hungrier for organic carbon. The carbon transfers and trans-formations at the soil or even the cell level can delineate the other nutrients such as N, P, S etc that become available to plants and microorganisms.

However, the situation is aggravated due to shrinking cultivated areas, depletion of natural resources, higher production costs, fewer farmers, and climatic changes. We are in the middle of a perfect storm of social, economic, and environmental pressures on the food supply around the world. Along with the increasing production and productivity, it has to be taken care of that the natural resources and environment are not exploited indiscriminately. Agriculture is both a threat to climate change and a possible way to stop it. Therefore, sustainability in agriculture is the only way forward. This commitment rests not only with the governments but with all the players in the agricultural supply chain. A holistic approach that concurrently tackles issues of environmental integrity, social equality, and economic prosperity is what we mean when we talk about sustainability. Decision-making is a fundamental aspect of human life, influencing choices in both personal and professional settings. Every individual, whether consciously or unconsciously, engages in decision-making daily, ranging from simple tasks like selecting a meal to complex strategic planning in organizations. However, decision-making becomes increasingly challenging when multiple conflicting criteria are involved. The presence of numerous factors, each with varying degrees of importance, often creates ambiguity and uncertainty, making it difficult to arrive at the most suitable option. To address these challenges, structured decision-making methodologies have been developed to provide a systematic and logical framework for evaluating alternatives.

One such widely recognized method is the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), introduced by Thomas L. Saaty in the 1970s. AHP was designed to assist decision-makers in breaking down complex problems into a structured and systematic hierarchy. This approach allows for a step-by-step evaluation of different factors, making it easier to analyze their relative importance. By structuring a problem into different levels - such as goal, criteria, sub-criteria, and alternatives - AHP provides clarity in decision-making and enhances consistency in judgments. Plants and their parts

Animal body and plants contain the same substances but they differ in relative amounts. There are also much larger compositional differences among species than do animals. Water is the principal constituent of living plants as well as animal body. With the maturity of seed, water content decreases. The dry matter of plants consists principally of carbohydrates, which serve as both structural and reserve material, while in animals, protein comprises the structure of the soft tissues and fat is the reserve. Thus, animal body contains only a trace of carbohydrate, though occurring as much less than 1 per cent at any given moment, because it is constantly beingformed and broken down in metablolism. Whereas, this is the principal constituent of most of the plant species. Protein is the main constituent of active tissues and thus leaves are much richer in this nutrient than are stems. Grass hays contain less protein than leguminous hays. When theplant matures, there isgradualmovementof protein fromthe vegetative parts to the seed. Thus, the seed contains a higher percentage of protein than the rest of the plant, as in grains and stovers.

A traditional decoction preparation that is frequently prescribed for microbial infestations (krimi), wound infections, fevers, and skin conditions called Nimbadi Kwatha.Strong herbs that have been separately shown to have antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties, including Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Triphala (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki), Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), and Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa), make up Nimbadi Kwatha. Triphala has antimicrobial and antioxidant qualities, Guduchi boosts host immunity and has antibacterial qualities, and Neem provides broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity. According to experimental studies, giloy extracts are effective against a variety of pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It has a distinct antimicrobial activity that involves two mechanisms: it enhances phagocytosis, changes cytokine production, and activates macrophages. In light of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), T. cordifolia is a prospective option for the development of plant-based antimicrobials and integrated therapies. Its use is backed by both modern pharmacological research and ethnomedicinal history for infectious disorders and immune health. Nimbadi Kwatha and its derivatives, including Nimbadi Ubatan and soap formulations, have been shown to have antibacterial properties by modern pharmacological research, which also showed a notable inhibition of bacterial and fungal growth in vitro. These results demonstrate the value of Ayurveda in treating infectious diseases and lend credence to its traditional claims. To close the gap between traditional knowledge and contemporary evidence, a thorough analysis of Nimbadi Kwatha’s antibacterial impact is essential. It also identifies the plant’s potential as a natural remedy for drug-resistant infections.

Free radicals, such as singlet oxygen (¹_O2), superoxide (O₂ ^.–) and some active derivatives of oxygen, like H₂O₂ are although generated in plant cells during the course of normal metabolic processes, but their production is notably enhanced when the plants are exposed to any kind of stress environment. The reactive oxygen species damage important cellular components, including cell membrane by peroxidation of lipid and de-esterification of fatty acids.

Plants have evolved a wide range of mechanisms to contend with this problem. The antioxidant defence system of a plant comprises of a variety of antioxidant molecules and enzymes which take care of free radicals produced in the cells. These enzymes are popularly termed as the ‘Scavenging Enzymes’ or ‘Antioxidative Enzymes’.

Conversion of oxygen molecules into its reactive form leads to induction of a sort of stress in plants, to which we call as ‘Oxidative Stress’. It is the equilibrium between oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes, which determines the fate of a plant.

Plants possess scavenging enzyme system to protect them from destructive oxidative reactions. These enzymes are not restricted to the intercellular compartment but are also found in the apoplast to a limited extent. Some of the enzymes are as follows:-

Methods of Note-Taking
To cater to diverse learning preferences, several note-taking methods have been developed. Understanding these techniques enables learners to adopt the most effective strategy for their needs.

Air is one of the primary things that make life on earth possible. The earth’s atmosphere or air is made up of variety of gases and other particles. The dynamic layer surrounding the earth’s surface containing various mixture of gases, moisture and solid particles (aerosols) is called atmosphere. The atmosphere is generally defined as the gaseous envelop surrounding the earth.

The formation of the earth was believed to be about five billion years ago. In the first 500 million years, a thick atmosphere emerged from the vapour and gases that were expelled from the interior of the earth. Hydrogen (H2 ), water vapour, methane and carbon dioxide were some of the gases believed to be initially formed in the atmosphere due to out gassing from the interior of the earth. About 3.5 billion years ago, the atmosphere consisted of carbon dioxide (CO2 ), Carbon monoxide (CO), water vapour (H2 O), nitrogen (N2 ) and hydrogen present in atmospheric layers like troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere (Fig. 2.1). The condensation of water vapour into water led to the formation of oceans in which sedimentation occurred and the hydrosphere was created. In the initial and ancient environment, oxygen was not present. Anaerobic is technical word which literally means without air (where air is generally used to mean oxygen and aerobic indicates the presence of oxygen). Evidence of such an anaerobic reducing atmosphere was hidden in early rock formations such as iron and uranium in their reduced states.

Modern farming system was aimed to maximise crop production by use of high yielding crop varieties or hybrids and application of agro-chemicals like fertilisers and pesticides along with irrigation and better crop production technologies. But without consideration of its impact on the environment and economics of the farmers, the monoculture of rice and wheat with agro-chemicals caused land degradation, soil and water contamination, gene erosion and environmental pollution.

Introduction

There is a large market for organic products, growers worldwide are faced with a potentially dangerous situation. While the majority of organic farmers prioritize soil quality, encompassing the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of soils, they often employ several inversion tillage techniques (Ploughing, disking and cultivating) to prepare seedbeds, integrate cover crops, and control weeds. These actions may worsen the condition of the soil. (Bruulsema et al?, 2003).

Recent pandemic (COVID-19) impacted global economy significantly and increased economic disparity. Vaccines are significantly beneficial and cost effective compared to other public healthcare preventives. Vaccines reduce hospitalisation, treatment costs and associated morbidity and mortality. Although COVID-19 vaccination and natural viral infection protected against reinfection, it waned in part due to emerging novel variants. Waning immunity from vaccine and natural infection are documented, and it was more so in severe hospitalised COVID-19. Many countries developed their own vaccines successfully to counter as COVID-19 became global. Vaccines needed updates to effectively fight COVID-19 as the wild strain constantly mutated. Among the intrinsic, perinatal, extrinsic, environmental, behavioural and nutritional aspects, the host factors included antibiotics usage pattern, sleep habits, physical activities, smoking habit and alcohol intake. Similarly, the external factors influencing vaccine response included childhood vaccination, early-age infections, nutrient supplements soon after birth, and breastfeeding pattern. Vaccination time also affected the efficacy. Forenoon vaccination developed less breakthrough infection compared to afternoon or evening vaccination due to varying immunological responses like immune cell functions, recruitment and transport, owing to circadian rhythm. Although vaccination side-effects are there, almost all vaccines are reportedly safe, effective and prevented serious illness, hospitalisation and death. Vaccine usually takes two weeks to manifest, and it prevented 14·4–19.8 million pandemic fatalities globally in 185 nations in a single year during December 2020 and December 2021. It was necessary that the boosters alongside vaccines enhanced immunological effects and provided extended protection. Thus, vaccine and booster design and development, dosing, targeted immunisation, cost-efficacy and vaccine acceptance are challenges to address. Government, not-for-profit organisations, health agencies and researchers may systematically analyse, justify and validate vaccine R&D and vaccinations economics. This chapter comprehends biological, commercial and economic benefits and impacts of booster dose in vaccination drives, and the roadmap ahead.

Introduction

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease marked by itching (pruritus), redness (erythema), and recurrent infections. While traditionally considered an immune-mediated condition, recent studies highlight the significant role of skin barrier dysfunction in its development. A key aspect of CAD is the compromised skin barrier, which increases permeability to allergens, irritants, and microorganisms, thereby worsening the disease. The skin barrier is a complex, dynamic structure essential for protecting dogs from environmental challenges. The stratum corneum—the outermost layer of the epidermis—serves as a crucial defense against environmental insults, allergens, and pathogens. In dogs with atopic dermatitis, this barrier often becomes impaired, leading to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), greater allergen penetration, and secondary infections. This dysfunction both results from and contributes to the condition, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of barrier disruption, inflammation, and immune dysregulation.

For farmers, the weather is a constant presence that influences every aspect of their work. It is a complex and multifaceted factor that can bring prosperity or devastation, often with little warning. The relationship between farmers and the weather is deeply intertwined, with each influencing the other in a delicate dance of observation, adaptation, and resilience. Weather affects farming in numerous ways, from the obvious to the subtle. Temperature, precipitation, and sunlight are the primary drivers of crop growth and development. However, extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and storms, can have catastrophic consequences for farmers. The timing and duration of these events can be particularly critical, with even small changes in weather patterns having significant impacts on crop yields and quality (Fig. 3.1).
Some key ways in which weather affects farming include:
• Crop growth and development: Temperature, precipitation, and sunlight influence the growth rate, yield, and quality of crops.
• Soil health: Weather patterns impact soil moisture, erosion, and nutrient availability, affecting soil fertility and structure.
• Pest and disease management: Weather conditions can facilitate or hinder the spread of pests and diseases, influencing the need for pesticides and other control measures.
• Water management: Precipitation and irrigation patterns determine water availability, affecting crop growth and farm operations.
• Farm operations: Weather conditions influence the timing and feasibility of planting, harvesting, and other critical farm activities.

The Carbon Cycle

The element that serves as a corner stone for cell structure is carbon. Plant tissues and microbial cells contain approximately 40 to 50% of C on dry weight basis. Yet, the ultimate source is the CO₂ of the atmosphere. The CO₂ is converted into organic C by the action of photoautotrophic organisms (higher plants and green algae). It has been estimated that the vegetation on earth’s surface consume some 1.3 x 10¹⁴ kg of CO₂ per annum which is about V₂₀ of the total CO₂ supply of the atmosphere or ¹/₁₀₀₀ of that in the ocean. Soil carbon constitutes the largest terrestrial pool of carbon.

In this chapter, the study’s findings are presented in a structured manner, accompanied by a discussion based on the analysis. The study aimed to present its findings in alignment with its objectives. Towards the end of this chapter, connections between the findings are established, explanations are provided, and an effort is made to uncover the underlying causes. The results and their corresponding discussion are organized according to the specific objectives of the study.

Result: Table 6.1 presents the distribution of 16 independent variables (x1-x16 ) and 3 dependent variables (y1 y3 ) in terms of their Minimum, Maximum, Mean, Variance, Standard deviation, and Coefficient of variation.

According to the study the maximum value for the independent variable Age at survey (x1 ) is 46.00, and minimum is 25.00. The study’s overall distribution was determined to have a mean of 32.938 with a variance of 22.895 and standard deviation 4.785. The high level of consistency is indicated by the variable’s coefficient of variation, which is 14.527%.

According to the study the maximum value for the independent variable Marital status (x2 ) is 18.00 and minimum is 0.00. The study’s overall distribution was determined to have a mean of 3.838 with a variance of 15.783 and standard deviation 3.973. The low level of consistency is indicated by the variable’s coefficient of variation, which is 103.527%.

Results: The variable age (x1 ) having the range between 20 to 62. So, the mean of the age (x1 ) variable is 38.64. Similarly, the other variables education (x2 ), family size (x3 ), family income (x4 ), risk factor (x5 ), management factor (x6 ), natural calamities (x7 ), employment status (x8 ), expenditure (x9 ), push factor (x10 ), pull factors (x11 ) have the mean 5.220, 4.720, 1.270, 0.505, 4.790, 3.875, 4.809, 5.655, 2.226, 5.613 respectively. Here, we see that distribution of variables education (x2 ) and push factor (x10 ) among the respondents are moderately consistent and residual distribution of variables among the respondents are highly consistent.

The problem of haphazard and chaotic development in Allahabad can be traced to the existence of Nazul Lease. The major development of the city under the colonial rule started around 1868, with the inception of the Civil Station, the status of the British inhabitants was further strengthened by the creation of Lease status, the land was basically leased out for a certain specified time period. The chapter deals with the Results and discussion of the study, whose purpose is to provide sufficient information so as to arrive at a valid conclusion. Tables and Figures are commonly used in this chapter to support and supplement textual materials. Discussion helps to interpret the Results of the study from a proper perspective and to relate them with other relevant studies.

6.3 Thematic areas intended audience (internal and external users), and the media presence of the websites .

6.1 Current Web Presence of Institutions Under Agricultural and Allied Sectors in West Bengal

An attempt was made to explore the web presence of the institutions related to agricultural and allied sectors viz-a-viz website domain and URL in West Bengal . The variables like the number of websites , their URL address, and domain use status under different institutions were presented in this section.

In Vedas the cow has been regarded as the mother of Rudras, the daughter of Vashu and the sister of Aditayas and also the use of cow ghee in religious ceremonies had been mentioned in Rig Veda and there is mention of the cow as “Kam Dhenu” in ancient writings. In Shiva temples are found the references of sculpture of “Nandi Bulls”. In Hindu mythology, the male buffalo thought to be the vehicle of the God of death “Yama” and also regarded as physical form of the demon Mahishasur, a symbol of inertia-”Tamas”.

The best environment for growing cells is similar to  the conditions what they experience in vivo. A number of various environmental factors affecting the tissues are :
 
    (1)    Temperature : In living matter, complicated chemical reactions are happened at comparatively low temperature.  In most of the mammalian and avian tissues the temperature  is 37^ºC to 38.5^ºC. If the temperature is enhanced to 45^ºC, cells are destroyed within  an hour but survive 12-24 hours at 42^ºC. It is applicable to most of the fibroblasts and epithelial  types of cells arising  from  mammalian tissues. Some of the mammalian cells ( human skin epithelial cells)  and amphibian cells  prefer lower temperature but fish tissue will not survive beyond 20^ºC.

The scale of human settlements is dynamic; it ranges from farmstead to village to town to city and to metropolis. There is thus, a broad hierarchy of settlements. These hierarchies can be grouped according to size and function. Size hierarchies are ranked from the highest to the smallest settlements only in terms of population while functional hierarchies are essentially based on the extent to which settlements have an economic impact on their surrounding areas. Functional hierarchies rank the settlement according to the number of shops, the number of specialised services available or the most dominant financial organisations. Such hierarchies mayor may not have similar sized market areas. Despite their having the same population, one town might surpass another in functional importance.

In this context, two theories have been propounded-the Central Place Theory by Walter Christaller and its modified version by August Losch. These theories are two of the most important examples of the scientific approach to the study of settlements. These theories suggest that there is a definite link between the functions of a settlement and its spatial locations with regularity in the distribution pattern within an urban system.

The cervical vertebrae are 7 in number.

The first and second cervical vertebrae are highly modified in conformity with the special function of support and movements of the head.

The third, fourth and fifth have the following characters:

The body is long. Ventral surface present a median ventral spine.

The dorsal surface has a flat central area which is narrow in the middle of the vertebrae, and wide at either end. On either side of this area there is a groove which lodges the longitudinal spinal vein.

The anterior extremity or head has an oval articular surface which faces forward and downward; it is strongly convex and wider above than below.

The posterior extremity is larger and has a nearly circular cotyloid cavity.

The arch is large and strong. It is perforated on either side by foramen which communicates with the foramen transverse hum. The vertebral notches are large.

The articular process are large. Their articular surface are extensive, oval in outline, and slightly concave.

3.1 INTRODUCTION

The complete soil organic fraction is made up of live organisms, and their undecomposed, partly decomposed and completely transformed remains. Soil organic matter is the term used to refer more specifically to the non-living components which are a heterogeneous mixture composed largely of products resulting from microbial and chemical transformations of organic debris. These transformations, known collectively as the humification process, give rise to humus, a mixture of substances which have a degree of resistance to further microbial attack.

The scientific community has long relied on the expertise of trained researchers and professionals to advance our understanding of the world. However, with the increasing complexity of global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and public health concerns, it has become clear that a new approach is needed. The traditional model of scientific research, where experts work in isolation to collect and analyze data, is no longer sufficient to address the scale and urgency of these challenges. Citizen Science, which involves the active participation of the public in scientific research, has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing these challenges. By leveraging the collective efforts of citizens, researchers can tap into a vast pool of knowledge, skills, and perspectives, ultimately leading to more inclusive, equitable, and effective scientific inquiry. From monitoring water quality and tracking climate patterns to identifying species and analyzing satellite imagery, citizens are making meaningful contributions to scientific research (Fig. 3.1).
The benefits of Citizen Science are numerous. It provides opportunities for citizens to engage with scientific research, promoting a deeper understanding of the scientific process and its applications. It also enables researchers to collect data on a larger scale and in more diverse locations, leading to more comprehensive and accurate findings. Furthermore, Citizen Science has the potential to increase public trust in science, promote community engagement, and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among citizens for environmental and societal issues.
