Mites are small arthropods belonging to the subclass Acari (also known as Acarina) and the class Arachnida. The scientific discipline devoted to the study of ticks and mites is called acarology. In soil ecosystems, mites are favored by high organic matter content and by moist conditions, wherein they actively engage in the fragmentation and mixing of organic matter (Nyle and Ray, 2009). Mites are among the most diverse and successful of all the invertebrate groups. They have exploited an incredible array of habitats, and because of their small size (most are microscopic), go largely unnoticed. Many live freely in the soil or water, but there are also a large number of species that live as parasites on plants, animals, and some that feed on mold. It is estimated that 48,200 species of mites have been described (Halliday et al., 2000).

1. Emergence and history of the concept of gender in development

In a chronological point of view it was the period of late 1960s to mid1970s that marked a turning point in development that saw the emergence of gender as an issue of concern. It was during this period that many important publications on psychology of women and gender roles started its manifestation. However, the recurring theme in most of these publications focussed the white male bias in research and research interpretation. Yet, these research publications served as a platform for a thorough discussion of the biological and social factors that contributed to the understanding of psychology of women. The book entitled, The Development of Sex Differences, edited by Maccoby (1966), can be seen as a pivotal moment in the field of gender psychology. The book with several chapters that lay the foundations of children’s gender development focused on theories of gender development. The publication of the book Man and Women, Boy and Girl in the 1970s put forth an advanced theory about gender identity and suggested that social factors played a more significant role in gender identity and gender roles. This sparked the debate of nature - nurture issues which are still significant to this very date. It’s during the same decade that scholars started to challenge the conceptualisations of masculinity and femininity and migrate from the unidimensional simplistic models of bipolar opposites.

Contributions of Carl Gustav Jung (originally Karl Gustav Jung) also had a great role in this migration. Carl Jung’s school of analytical psychology, proposed the concepts of anima and animus. These were part of his theory called collective unconscious which suggests that every woman has an unconscious masculine realm known as animus and every man has an unconscious feminine side known as anima. He postulated that this personal unconscious symbolized prototypical masculine or feminine principles and not an aggregate of either father or mother. It had the potential to transcend to the personal psyche and influence the behavior.

Introduction

Global plastic production is on rise while the production in 1950 was 1.3 million tonnes wherein 359 million tons of plastic waste generation was recorded in 2018. It is predicted that the increase in plastic waste generation will reach around 250 million metric tonnes by 2050 (Haque and Fan, 2022). Plastics are now ubiquitous and has turn out to be the most dominant marine litter, which is an emerging global concern today. According to the UNEP, United Nations Environment Assembly 2017 estimates, annually around 4.8 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastics are introduced into the oceans (Haward, 2018). Owing to their lower costs, lightweight, durability and strength, virtually everything and everywhere are plastics.

Modern and transgenic breeding approaches consist of modern plant breeding triangle, high-throughput phenotyping (HTP), marker-assisted selection (MAS), marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC), genomic selection (GS), genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genome editing. MAS accelerates trait identification through DNA markers, improving efficiency in selecting plants with desired traits. MABC employs molecular markers to facilitate gene introgression from donor parents (DPs) to superior recurrent parents (RPs). GS employs genome-wide markers to predict performance, revolutionizing breeding by considering both major and minor-effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Genome editing techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated protein 9) enable targeted gene modifications for desired traits. Genome editing involves selecting target genes, designing guide RNAs for Cas9, and introducing the CRISPR-Cas9 system into plants. This technology has been utilized to enhance crop productivity, sustainability, and disease resistance. Transgenic crops are designed to carry specific traits, such as pest resistance, virus resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and nutritional enrichment. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is highlighted as a tool for transgene introduction, offering advantages like low copy number integration and stable expression. Genetic engineering remains a promising avenue for creating disease-resistant crops and ensuring global food security.

3.1. Natural cross-pollination

Breeding procedures in any plant species of economic importance are guided by its reproductive system particularly, pollination mechanism. In the cereal crops such as maize, pearl millet etc., where cross-pollination is facilitated by wind, the breeders have developed schemes for commercial exploitation of dominance and epistatic genetic variation through hybrid and population breeding. In contrast in self-pollinated crops, the efforts are always made to exploit additive genetic variation primarily through pedigree and mass selection.
 
In pulses, self-pollination is a rule and pigeonpea is no exception. However under field conditions, occurrence of hybrid plants in the populations is not uncommon; and it happens due to some degree of natural out-crossing that took place in the preceding generation. This type of partial natural out-crossing in pigeonpea is affected by a variety of insects (Fig 10) which forage on its large flowers to collect the nectar. These minor incidences of out-crossing are the primary source of varietal deterioration. Recently, the pigeonpea breeders converted this constraint into an opportunity for genetic enhancement of yield through exploitation of hybrid vigor and developing commercial hybrids.

1. Introduction

For a proper understanding and analysis of women’s position in India’s rural economy, we require adequate and good quality data. This chapter examines the limitations of gender-disaggregated data on the rural economy of India with respect to three aspects: the ownership of land and other assets, participation in the rural workforce, and women’s share of agricultural incomes and earnings. Robotics is a branch of engineering and science that deals with robot design, construction, operation, and uses. A robot is a machine that is capable of carrying out a complex series of actions autonomously or semi-autonomously, typically programmed by computer software or controlled by remote operators. Robotics technology combines various disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science to create machines that can interact with the physical world and perform tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible for humans to accomplish. The term "robot" was initially brought to public attention by Karel Capek, a Czech writer, in his play Rossum's Universal Robots, which was published in 1920.

Quantification of DNA is an essential step after its extraction in conjunction with the confirmation of the quality. NanoDrop spectrophometer is a powerful instrument in determining both purity and concentration of nucleic acids on the basis of absorbance values obtained by adding small amount of sample (1-2 μl) on the measurement surface.

Principle: The instrument works on the basic principle of spectrophotometry, which takes highly sensitive fluorescent measurements of the microvolumes. It takes use of microvolume sample retention technology based on surface tension property of the liquid and fibre optic technology. Together, these features make it possible to detect sample even in microlitres, which is much more than the traditional method that need cuvette-sized sample volume. The concentration of nucleic acid sample is normally determined by measuring its absorbance at 260 nm.

Post-traumatic bleeding, caused by accidents or battlefield injuries, is a major worldwide issue due to the associated high fatality rate. Significant efforts have been made to develop hemostatic medications that help reduce post-traumatic bleeding. The use of naturally abundant and highly biocompatible polymers, such as alginate, can have a substantial impact on the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of hemostatic medicines.We haveexaminedthe effectiveness of developed hemostatic hydrogel (SA-CZ) containing calcium (Ca2+) and zinc (Zn2+) in treating low-pressure bleeding wounds with the added benefit of promoting faster wound healing. The hydrogel nature of the hemostatic formulation poses limitation as hemostatic material due to its fluid absorption capability. Therefore, we converted the formulation in the form of dry formulation. Further, we explored the use of dry hemostatic particles (SA-CZ DHP) made from sodium alginate supplemented with Ca2+ and Zn2+ to manage excessive blood loss after post-traumatic hemorrhage.SA-CZ DHP showed substantial in-vitro efficacy, as observed by the significant reduction in coagulation time with better blood coagulation index (BCI) and no evident hemolysis in human blood. SA CZ also showed enhanced cellular migration (1.58-fold) in-vitroand improved wound closure (≈70%) as compared with betadine (≈38%) at the 7th-day post-wound creation in-vivo (p<0.005).The safe SA-CZ DHP showed high absorption and accelerated blood clotting kineticswith reduced coagulation time (≈70%, p<0.0001) in whole human blood. SA-CZ DHP significantlyreduced the mean blood loss (≈90% in SD rats tail incision), and bleeding time (≈60%in BALB/c mice tail incision) was at par with commercially available Celox™hemostatic granules.

Health monitoring of fish and plants is also important. Watching for changes in behavior, eating habits, color, or signs of distress enables early diagnosis and treatment. For planted tanks, this might include trimming overgrowth, replanting, or adding fertilizers as needed.

Crop diseases are a significant threat to agricultural production worldwide, posing a major challenge to food security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. These diseases, caused by a variety of pathogens including fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, can have devastating effects on crop yields, quality, and overall plant health. The causes of crop diseases are complex and multifaceted, involving a combination of factors such as environmental conditions, plant susceptibility, and pathogen characteristics. Climate change, soil degradation, and water scarcity can all contribute to an increased risk of crop disease outbreaks. Additionally, the widespread use of monoculture farming practices, which involve the cultivation of a single crop species over large areas, can lead to a loss of genetic diversity and increased vulnerability to disease. The consequences of crop diseases are far-reaching and can have significant impacts on agricultural production, food security, and the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, an estimated 20-30% of global crop production is lost to pests and diseases each year, with crop diseases accounting for a significant proportion of these losses. This translates to billions of dollars in economic losses and millions of tonnes of food lost, exacerbating food insecurity and poverty, particularly in developing countries. In addition to the economic and food security impacts, crop diseases can also have significant environmental consequences. The use of chemical pesticides and fungicides to control disease outbreaks can pollute soil, air, and water, harming beneficial organisms and ecosystems. Furthermore, the development of pesticideresistant pathogens can lead to the use of even more toxic chemicals, perpetuating a cycle of environmental degradation. In this chapter, we will explore the causes and consequences of crop diseases in greater detail, examining the complex interplay of factors that contribute to disease outbreaks and the impacts of these outbreaks on agricultural production, food security, and the environment. We will also discuss strategies for managing and controlling crop diseases, including the use of resistant crop varieties, integrated disease management (IDM) practices, and sustainable agriculture approaches.
3.1 Symptoms of Crop Disease
Crop disease refers to any abnormal condition or disorder that affects the health and productivity of crops, including plants, trees, and other vegetation.

HACCP: The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a scientific, rational and systematic approach to identify, assess and control hazards during production, processing, manufacturing and use of food. It ensures safety of the food. HACCP presents a good opportunity for the food industry for upgrading quality and bringing uniformity and consistency in their supplies to international market, or It is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, chemical and biological hazards as a mean of prevention rather than finished product inspection. It involves identification, evaluation and control of hazards which are significant for food safety.

HACCP plan: A document prepared in accordance with the principles of HACCP to ensure control of hazards which are significant for food safety throughout the food chain under consideration.

Haemagglutinins: A group of proteins of plants that are not antibodies and do not originate in an immune system but bind specifically to carbohydrate containing receptors on cell surfaces (red blood cells). It is also known as Phytoagglutins/lectins.

Haff disease: A pyrolysis due to the excessive consumption of various fresh water fish which contain the vitamin antithiamine.

Introduction

There is a growing interest in the role of different types of land use systems in stabilizing the atmospheric CO₂ concentration and reducing the CO₂ emissions or on increasing the carbon sink of forestry and agroforestry systems. Forestry has been recognized as a means to reduce CO₂ emissions as well as enhancing carbon sinks. There is considerable interest to increase the carbon storage capacity of terrestrial vegetation through land-use practices such as afforestation, reforestation, and natural regeneration of forests, silvicultural systems and agroforestry (Brown 1996; Canadell and Raupach 2008). Agroforestry systems are very important given the area currently under agriculture, the number of people who depend on land for their livelihoods, and the need for integrating food production with environmental services (Garrity 2004; Makundi and Sathaye 2004).

ABSTRACT

Phospholipase A₂ catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at the sn-2 position and releases fatty acids and lysophospholipids. When the fatty acid is the arachidonic acid, a complementary metabolism leads to pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes and platelet activating factors. Thus, modulating pro-inflammatory lipid mediator production by inhibiting PLA₂ activity remains a potential target for the development of new drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Medicinal plants have been explored therapeutically in traditional medicines and are a valuable source for drug discovery. Molecular docking studies were carried out for anti-inflammatory compounds from various plant sources with human non-pancreatic secretory phospholipase A₂.

5.1 APOMIXIS

Apomixis is derived from two Greek words “Apo” (away from) and “mixis” (the act of mixing or mingling). It refers to the occurrence of an asexual reproductive process in the place of normal sexual processes involving reduction division and fertilization. During sexual reproduction, developmental steps occurring inside the ovule produce the female gametophyte (embryo sac) and following a double fertilization event give rise to embryo and endosperm structures. Apomixis can be best described as the reference to the asexual process. In some species, embryo sac is produced not as a result of meiosis and fertilization but by certain asexual processes. The occurrence of such asexual reproductive process in the place of normal seed reproductive processes of reduction division and fertilization is known as Apomixis. Such seedling plants produced in this manner is known as apomicts. ’’Apomixis’’ is used synonymously with ’’agamospermy’’ (Stebbins 1950), referring to the asexual production of seed.

Apomixis (asexual seed formation) is a phenomenon in which a plant bypasses the most fundamental aspects of sexual reproduction—meiosis and fertilization—to form a viable seed. Plants can form seeds without fertilization, and the seed genotype is consistent with the female parent. The development of apomictic technology would be revolutionary for agriculture and for food production as it would reduce costs and breeding times and also avoid many complications typical of sexual reproduction (e.g., incompatibility barriers) and of vegetative propagation (e.g., viral transfer). The application of apomictic reproductive technology has the potential to revolutionize crop breeding. Apomixis is widely distributed among higher plants. More than 300 species belonging to 35 families are apomictic. It is most common in Gramineae, Compositae, Rosaceae and Rutaceae. Among the major cereals maize, wheat and pearl millet have apomictic relatives. Apomixis is reproduction where only one parent passes genes to the offspring (King, 2006). Apomictically produced offspring are genetically identical to the parent (clones).The method is mostly seen in plants, especially flowering plants. Apomixis was defined by Hans Winkler (2008) as the replacement of the normal sexual reproduction by asexual reproduction, without fertilization. Propagation from cuttings or leaves, is not apomixis. Natural replacement of the seed by an asexual method is apomixis.

When available, planting resistant cultivars is one of our most effective, economically viable and environmentally sound tactics. The underlying concept of using host resistance to our advantage comes from the knowledge that most plants and animals are resistant to most potential insect attackers.

Our natural ecology comprises insects, which are known to have both advantageous and detrimental consequences. Insect pests are the main obstacles in maximizing agricultural crop output, since they directly or indirectly result in significant crop loss. The intricate relationship that phytophagous insects have with their hosts is the result of a protracted and ongoing evolutionary process. Because of this, it is impossible to completely eradicate them, but there is a hopeful fix for this issue, i.e., utilizing insect resistant crop varieties. Insect-resistant kinds are those that, with the same starting infestation level and similar environmental conditions, yield considerably higher yields of high-quality fruit than susceptible varieties. By boosting yield and reducing pesticide use, these varieties had an enormous economic benefit. There are a number of highly effective insect resistance mechanisms that the targeted insect pest cannot simply overcome. This chapter discusses various breeding strategies such as introduction, selection, and hybridization as well as some modern breeding approaches that have been used to develop many insect-resistant crop varieties that have significantly improved the world’s food supply, by reducing carbon inputs through reduced pesticide use. By expressing bacterial endotoxins and producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops, genetic engineering also aids in the production of insect-resistant crops. Furthermore, RNA interference (RNAi) and genome editing by CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR associated 9) offer new avenues for the production of insect-resistant crops.
