Thermal stress arises whenever there is some increase or decrease in temperature of a body which causes either expansion or contraction in the dimension of body. If body is free to expand or contract, with the rise or fall of temperature, there exist no stress in the body. But if deformation of the body is partially or completely resisted then stresses are set up in the body which is known as Thermal Stress. However amount of stress induced in partially prevented deformation will be small than in case deformation is totally prevented.

Polymerase Chain Reaction

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique, invented in 1985 by Kary B. Mullis, allowed scientists to make millions of copies of a scarce sample of DNA. The technique has revolutionized many aspects of current research, including the diagnosis of genetic defects and the detection of the AIDS virus in human cells. The technique is also used by criminologists to link specific persons to samples of blood or hair via DNA comparison. PCR also affected evolutionary studies because large quantities of DNA can be manufactured from fossils containing but trace amounts.

Kary Mullis invented the PCR technique in 1985 while working as a chemist at the Cetus Corporation, a biotechnology firm in Emeryville, California. The procedure requires placing a small amount of the DNA containing the desired gene into a test tube. A large batch of loose nucleotides, which link into exact copies of the original gene, is also added to the tube. A pair of synthesized short DNA segments, that match segments on each side of the desired gene, is added. These “primers” find the right portion of the DNA, and serve as starting points for DNA copying. When the enzyme Thermus aquaticus (Taq) is added, the loose nucleotides lock into a DNA sequence dictated by the sequence of that target gene located between the two primers.

The test tube is heated, and the DNA’s double helix separates into two strands. The DNA sequence of each strand of the helix is thus exposed and as the temperature is lowered the primers automatically bind to their complementary portions of the DNA sample. At the same time, the enzyme links the loose nucleotides to the primer and to each of the separated DNA strands in the appropriate sequence. The complete reaction, which takes approximately five minutes, results in two double helices containing the desired portion of the original. The heating and cooling is repeated, doubling the number of DNA copies. After thirty to forty cycles are completed a single copy of a piece of DNA can be multiplied to hundreds of millions.

2.1 Introduction

The name thermodynamics stems from the Greek words therme (heat) and dynamis (power), which is most descriptive of the early efforts to convert heat into power. It may be defined as the science that deals with the relations among heat, work and properties of a system. Today, thermodynamics is broadly interpreted to include all aspects of energy and energy transformations, including power generation, refrigeration, and relationships among the properties of matter. It is viewed as the science of energy, and thermal engineering is concerned with making the best use of available energy resources.

Thermodynamics basically entails four laws or axioms known as Zeroth, First, Second and Third law of thermodynamics.

The zeroth law deals with thermal equilibrium and establishes a concept of temperature.

The first law pertains to the conservation of energy and introduces the concept of internal energy.

The second law indicates the limit of converting heat into work and introduces the concept of entropy.

The third law defines the absolute zero of entropy.

The concept of energy was introduced by Newton in the field of mechanics during generalizing the hypothesis of kinetic and potential energies. Energy may be defined as the capacity to do work and it is a scalar quantity. It cannot be seen or observed. Its presence can, however, be felt by the properties of the system. There occurs a change in one or more properties of the system in case of energy transfer. The absolute value of energy of a system is difficult to measure, whereas the energy change is rather easy to calculate. Energy follows the conservation law, one of the most fundamental laws of nature, which simply states that during an interaction, energy can change its form from one form to another but the total amount of energy remains constant, that is, energy cannot be created or destroyed only form can be changed.

Thermodynamic deals with the principles of energy and energy conversion in engineering. It also considers the thermodynamic properties of substances. 1. Introduction

Thermodynamics is science of energy and may be defined as “The branch of science which deals with the Interoction between the heat and work is referred as Thermodynamics

’Thermo’ means heat and ’dynamics’ means motion. It deals with energy interaction when work is converted into heat energy or vice versa. Precisely, thermodynamics may be defined as a science which deals with energy transformation from one form to another and dealing with relationship among the properties ofthe system. In power plants, internal combustion engines, boilers, nozzles, diffusers etc. are the example where heat is converted into work. In compressor, turbine, cooling of engines by water, application of brakes in a vehicle etc. are the examples where work is converted into heat.

Based on the nature and purpose of the content, there are numerous classes of scientific communications. Theses represent the class of research communications that are of great importance to the students. Thesis is part and parcel of the master’s and doctoral programme in almost every academic institution. In some institutions, even the bachelor students are expected to submit their brief report on project.

Chromatography is an important analytical technique for the separation, isolation and identification of the constituents of a mixture. It is a physical method of separation in which the components to be separated are distributed between two phases; one of these phases consisting a stationary bed of large surface area, the other being a fluid that percolates through or along the stationary bed. All forms of chromatography do have the common features given in this definition. All of them involve the physical movements of the sample across a flat surface (tube like) or through a tube. The stationary phases in all of these possess a large surface area. In all the techniques, the movement of the sample is due to the motion of the fluid/mobile phase. The principle underlying all these methods is the selective retardation of the movement of the components by the stationary phase. These methods result in the production of bands of concentrated components. The basis of naming various chromatographic methods are different:

Kirchner was the first in 1950 to think of thin layers. But it was Egon Stahl in 1958 who was responsible for bringing out standard equipment and related procedures to popularize thin layer chromatography (TLC). TLC is a modified form of column chromatography. Hence it is also called open column chromatography. The adsorbent is spread over a supporting material (glass or plastic sheets) to form a thin layer of adsorbent. As a binder, plaster of Paris or gypsum is added to the adsorbent material like silica gel (hence silica gel TLC). The adsorbent is spread over the plate as a thin layer of 0.25 or 0.5 mm. The adsorbent to water ratio is 1:2. It is initially allowed to air dry, followed by drying in an oven at 110oC for 1-2hr or overnight (activation of TLC plates) after which the plate is ready for thin layer chromatography.

Introduction The ever increasing demand for functional foods having numerous health benefits has been an active research ground for the food scientists around the globe. Till date, many food products have been formulated to deliver functionalities by value addition with bioactive compounds (Carvalho Barros et al., 2020). These products have been extensively studied and proved to be beneficial, especially for elder age group against various metabolic syndrome and health complications. Functional foods are edible products fortified with compounds having additional health and safety benefits such as vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds (Granato et al., 2020). One such example of a nutritionally dense food product with the potential of fortification to meet certain health benefits is fruit leather.

One prime fact in research is not to take the matter for granted and do not believe in status quo. This is most critical mindset for creating something new. Even change may be made in existing circumstances with minimum requirements. Here, I may cite my experience while starting research in 1976 for my doctorate program on immunity against schistosomiasis. The experimental model was albino mouse where schistosomes, by their nature, develop into blood vascular system of the host hence require a special technique called “Perfusion technique” for retrieval of mature and immature schistosomes. This ‘perfusion technique’ requires use of a “Peristaltic pump” and was followed in some western countries (2). However, No body in India followed this perfusion technique hence recovered schistosomes from mouse or from any other host species by teasing the blood vessels or/and cutting and soaking liver,spleen, kidney, lung pieces in normal saline.

The method described here gives an approximate thioglucoside and isothiocyanates contents in rapeseed meal.

Method

To 10 g meal (defatted by soxhlet extraction) add 250 ml distilled water, hydrolyse at 54ºC for one hour and then boil for two hours, keeping volume constant. Filter, retaining filtrate and wash residue three times with 50 ml hot water. Add washings to initial filtrate and make up volume to 600 ml. Precipitate barium sulphate by heating and adding excess barium chloride solution. Leave on a steam bath for a few hours and then filter. Ash in muffle furnace and then weigh precipitate.

Boundaries

The cavity of thorax (thoracic cavity) is formed like a truncated cone which is compressed laterally in its cranial part and some what wider in its caudal part. The dorsal wall or roof of the thorax is formed by the thoracic vertebrae and the ligaments and muscles connected with them. The lateral walls are formed by the ribs and intercostal muscles and other muscles supporting the walls internally and externally. The floor or the ventral wall is formed by the sternum and costal cartilages along with the ligaments and muscles attached to them. The caudal wall or the base of the thorax is formed by the diaphragm. It slopes craniad and ventrad. It is bound dorsally by the last thoracic vertebra, ventrally by xiphoid cartilage and laterally by the last pair of ribs and the costal arch formed by the union of costal cartilages of asternal ribs. The apex of the cone is narrow, nearly oval or triangular in form and it is directed cranially. The cavity of the apex is bound dorsally by the first thoracic vertebra, laterally by the first pair of ribs and ventrally by the first sternebra along with manubrium sterni. The apex is fully occupied by the longus colli muscle, oesophagus, trachea, vessels, nerves and lymph nodes. The width of the thorax is greatest at the level of ninth ribs. The wall of the thorax is internally lined by the serous membrane which is a part of the pleura.

Thoracic Vertebrae

Ox: Thoracic vertebrae characterized by well developed neural spines, short bodies with capitular facets and transverse processes with tubercular facets for articulation with the ribs (Fig.4.1).

• The thorax is the organ of locomotion due to articulation of wings and legs and is connected with the by neck or cervix.

• Thoracic segments are made up of three sclerites namely, dorsal body plate tergum or nota, ventral body plate sternum and lateral plate pleuron.

• Second and middle tagma which is three segmented, namely prothorax, mesothorax and metathorax. Meso and metathorax which bear wings are called as Pterothorax.

• In the apterygote insects the three thoracic segments are similar in size and structure. In the pterygote insects the thorax is highly modified.

• The prothorax is quite large and is somewhat independent of the other segments. The large shield that covers the dorsal and lateral sides of the prothorax is the pronotum.

• The pronotum is the dorsal sclerite of the prothorax, which can be highly modified in various orders such as the Hemiptera, Blattaria, and Coleoptera. E.g undivided and Saddle shaped in grass hopper, Shield like in cockroach.

• Cockroaches have pronotums that extend forward over the head.

• Scarab beetles and other beetles may also have unusual pronotums.

ABSTRACT

The deeply rooted coastal grass Spinifex littoreus (Burm.f.) Merr. is a potent soil binder having capability to form a strong and stable dunes. However detailed features of this species has not been thoroughly studied till date. In this communication, salient morphological features along with different crucial micro-morphological peculiarities have been discussed. The comparative analysis of gradual degradation of population of Spinifex littoreus and native dune vegetation of the coastal belt in East Medinipur of West Bengal and adjacent Balasore district of Odisha are provided, along with different biodiversity indices. Plants were characterized as stout, dioecious, stoloniferous grass upto 90 cm tall, with rigid and sharp spiny leaves. Spikelets in racemes subtended by large bract-like spatheoles which are fascicled into large capitate spiny structures 30-37 cm in diameter. S. littoreus is fairly common along sandy shores and dunes. Plants are useful as a sand binder in unstable coastal dunes ecosystem.

A large number of genetic resources, species, and ecosystems are under severe threat. Many species have gone extinct and many more are being pushed towards extinction. Most of the ecosystems have also gone into what we can call functional extinction. The major factors becoming threats to biodiversity are anthropogenic. Human activities, in essence, are not benevolent for biodiversity to flourish in natural systems. Burgeoning human populations are the root cause of biodiversity destruction. Changing human lifestyles fed by a materialistic economy are further acting as catalysts for the ever-increasing human populations to destroy biodiversity evolved over millions of years amid terrestrial conditions favorable for the origin and prevalence of an astonishing variety of life forms on Earth.

There is hardly any threat to biodiversity due to natural factors except those inherent in the designs of natural evolution. A species at a certain point of time in its evolutionary history is destined to vanish, but the void in nature created due to this loss is filled by the evolution of new life forms. Not only the void is filled, the nature gradually goes on enriching itself 

Introduction

India’s textile sector is one of the oldest industries in the Indian economy, dating back several centuries. The industry is highly varied, with hand-spun and hand woven textiles sectors at one end of the spectrum and the capital-intensive sophisticated mill sector at the other. The fundamental strength of the textile industry in India is its strong production base of a wide range of fiber/yarns, from natural fibers like cotton, jute, silk, and wool, to synthetic/man-made fibers like polyester, viscose, nylon, and acrylic.

Ultrasonography has an importance place in human practice and veterinary f ield especially in canine practice. Since many years two dimensional ultrasound has been used for scanning purposes both in human and animal practice. But the scenario has changed in human practice with development of three dimensional technology and later four dimensional ultrasonography has developed which shows movements of the objects being scanned especially in the case of fetuses. Nowadays it has been common to use these advanced technology in the human practices. Yet these technologies are in the childhood stage in the veterinary field. High cost of 3D/4D ultrasound equipment, operational difficulties in non sedated animals & lack of specific knowledge about the operation of volume scanning hinder the use of this technology in the veterinary field. Better understanding of the different application of these technologies can be made to use in research areas for the better understanding of the abnormalities, post therapeutics as well in the diagnosis of the diseases

Principle of Three Dimensional and Four Dimensional Ultrasonography

Sound waves of frequency higher than human audible frequency usually ranges from 2-13 MHz are used in ultrasonography. Depending upon on depth of tissue from the scanning surfaces frequency is selected. Three dimensional ultrasonography gives three dimensional images of the volume being scanned .it works on the same principle of 2D ultrasonography but ultrasonographic beams are sent different angles to get three dimensional image of object being scanned. Volume information is obtained either directly using 2D array probe or by reconstructing three dimensional volume from a series of continuous or non- continuous 2D images by using software (Fenster and Downey, 2000). An advancement of 3D technology is 4D ultrasound. Four dimensional ultrasound adds the fourth dimension as time and gives a dynamic real-time 3Dultrasonography of the concerned organ with a continuous volume image acquisitioned rendering process. (Khurana and Dahiya, 2004).

Removal of seeds from dry fruits is known as threshing while that of wet fruits is known as extraction. Threshing involves beating or rubbing the plant material to detach the seed from its pod or fruit. The detached seed is then winnowed to remove chaff, straw and other light material from the seed.

Threshing / extraction methods

1. Mechanical threshing

• Various types of threshing machines with adjustable cylinder speeds are available for extraction of vegetable seeds.
• Care must be taken to avoid damage to the seed during mechanical threshing, by properly adjusting the speed of the beaters, the width of the gap between the beaters and the concave, the airflow and the sieve sizes.

22.1. What?

Threshing is the process of separating grains from the straw or pod by impact, friction or both. Threshing should be done at an appropriate time after harvest. Delayed threshing causes rapid deterioration of the grains, especially during field drying or when the crop is stacked in the field. Improper threshing leads to wastage of grains and reduces the quantity of final marketable produce. After threshing, the produce has to be winnowed to remove lighter materials such as unfilled grains, chaff, weed seeds and straw using a blower, air fan or wind. Winnowing improves the ability of the grain to be safely stored, milling output and quality.

22.2. Methods employed

Traditionally, threshing is done by beating the harvested crop on a threshing floor directly or with a stick. Another traditional method of threshing is to make a bull walk in circles on the grain on a hard surface. In some areas, the harvested panicle with grain is spread on the surface of a country road so that the grain may be threshed by the wheels of passing vehicles. In these methods winnowing is separately performed. However, with the development of technology, now it is mostly done by machine referred to as threshers, shellers and stripper. Some of these threshers have inbuilt facility for threshing. Thus, threshing and winnowing are completed in a single process.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris Linn.), also known as ‘Common Thyme’ or ‘Garden Thyme’, belongs to the Lamiaceae family and has been a vital herb spice for centuries. The name “thyme” originates from the Greek word meaning “to fumigate” or “thumus,” which symbolizes courage. The herb contains various nutrients, including moisture (7.1%), protein (6.8%), fat (4.6%), crude fibre (24.3%), carbohydrates (44.0%), mineral matter (13.2%), calcium (2.1%), phosphorus (0.20%), iron (0.14%), sodium (0.08%), potassium (0.9%), vitamin A (175 IU), vitamin B1 (51 mg), vitamin B2 (0.4 mg), vitamin C (12.0 mg), niacin (4.9 mg), and a calorific value of 340 calories. Upon distillation, thyme yields Red Thyme oil. Additionally, the herb contains triterpinoid saponins, flavones, ursolic acid (1.5% in tops), caffeic acid, bitter compounds, tannins, and resins. Other wild thyme species, such as T. serpyllum L., T. zygus L. (white thyme), and T. satureioides Coss and Bal, also produce volatile oils. The major compounds in T. zygus and T. serpyllum include thymol, linalool, and linalyl acetate, while T. satureioides contains thymol, borneol, and a-terpineol.

Thyme is one of the best known European culinary herbs. The dried leaves and flowering to ps of Thymus vulgaris Linn. are called Thyme and those of Thymus serpyllum wild Thyme, which is found in the Western temperate Himalayas, from Kashmir to Kumaon hills, India, at an altitude of 1,525 meter above mean sea level. Thyme is grown in Europe, Austria and North Asia. It is now cultivated in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and other parts of Europe and, also, in England, North Africa, Canada and the USA. It is a common garden plant which survives for many years under good culture. The dried leaves are curled, are of brownish-green color, usually no longer than 6-7 mm and 2-3mm broad and marketed in whole or in ground form. The flavor is aromatic, warm and pungent. Wild Thyme is a low, hardy perennial, undershrub, 20-40cm high, successfully introduced into the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, in Southern India, or at higher elevations. It is used both for seasoning and for its volatile oil, ranging from 1.08-2.0% (average 1.0%), and in India, its cultivation on a commercial scale can be tried in the western temperate Himalaya from Kashmir to Kumaon hills between 1500 and 4000 meters above mean sea level. The plant can be grown for ornamental edging along the paths in gardens, and is also suitable for rockeries. Leaves are oblong-lanceolate, 10 mm x 3 mm, with orange-brown glandular dots; flowers are coriaceous, small, lavender, purplish to almost white in color, attractive to honeybees, in pubescent verticillaters (Plants that have their flowers intermixed with small leaves growing in a kind of whirl are called verticillate plants); nutlets are brown in color.

ABSTRACT

Biodiversity is a major resource for drug development. Since ancient times mankind has exploited nature for all kind of useful products and enjoyed the colors, flavors and fragrances of flowers and leaves etc. The current global resurgence in the use of plant based drugs offers an ideal opportunity for the country to emerge as a major player in the herbal products market. Herbal medicines are chemically diverse and may contain thousands of bioactive compounds, which can be of immense value to the pharmaceutical industries. Since ages, herbal medicine has been a major part of traditional knowledge play an important role for identification of biological resources worthy of commercial exploitation. Origanum vulgare L. is a wild plant of Labiatae family grows widely in Ladakh region (11500 to 13000 ft). The local people of this region use this plant for various ailment and culinary purposes due to the potential of active ingredients. The present objective of this study is to isolate the thymol content, a major ingredient of O. vulgare and quantifying the same. The volatile oils were extracted through hydro-distillation and active compound was analyzed by Gas Chromatography (GC-17A Shimadzu). Our results demonstrate that the thymol content of O. vulgare from this region is 80.28% as compared to plants grown at other low altitude regions. It is well known that plants under stress respond with biosynthesis of phytochemicals to enable them to adapt to the harsh environmental conditions. Ladakh being unique in many aspects due to its geo-climatic conditions like high elevation, extreme cold, dry weather and low humidity. Plants surviving in Ladakh therefore have unique chemical composition as compared to those grown elsewhere.

It is a small mass of tissue present on either side of the trachea or windpipe. It is a very important structure that helps in the metabolism of the body.

When the basal metabolism is below normal, a person tends to be slow in his movements. He feels cold more and may have marked dryness of the skin, along with constipation and a tendency to put on weight. His hair is dry, thin, and coarse and the skin appears dry, scaly and thickened. There may be puffiness in the face, especially around the eyes. The tongue is usually large, the pulse is slow and regular, and the patient often complains of vague pains in the back and stiffness in the joints.

Hypothyroidism: It is a condition that results from the insufficient amount of thyroid hormone in the body. The trouble may also develop from pituitary deficiency, but is more likely due to some inborn error of the thyroid gland. The change usually comes gradually and involves the patients personality and also his ability to think.

Hypothyroidism is seen in both sexes, but is more common in women. Most of these are overweight and may complain of heavy flow during menstruation. The heart is often enlarged, and there is high level of cholesterol in the blood stream.

Construction details

They had a total of 36 tanks, and most of them were made of tin. Each tank had a diameter of 6 meters, was 1.2 meters deep, and could hold up to 30 tons of water. Inside these tanks, there was a plastic lining. Additionally, there were 4 to 5 tanks made from bamboo. Bamboo tanks have a shorter lifespan, lasting 1 to 2 years, while tin tanks can last for 8 to 10 years.

Culture details

The species that was cultured over there was Red tilapia. Culture practice was intensive. The nursery-rearing period was 70 days. In the first step, fish were raised from 0.5 grams to 10 grams in a separate tank for 35 days. The second step involved the growth of fish from 10 grams to 30 grams for the next 35 days in another separate tank. The fishes were bought from outer sources and they were all male fishes.

The ITAF participants visited the Anuban Tilapia Floating Cage Culture on the Canoy River situated in the central part of Thailand on 11/10/2023 at 1:30 p.m. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the floating cage culture on a large scale.

Construction Details

The farmer had a total 500 number of cages divided into 5 units i.e. 1 unit contains 100 cages. The dimensions of the floating cage are 7m in length, 5m in width and 2m in depth having an area of 70 m3. The fabrication of the cage was done by using the GI pipes attached to the barrels for buoyancy. The double HDPE netting was done from five sides and on the upper side bird net was fixed as a biosecurity measure. The construction cost of the cage was 140000 baht /cage.

Tillage includes all operations and practices that are used for the purpose of modifying soil physical characters. Tillage is the most difficult and time consuming operation in crop production. About 30 per cent of the total cost of cultivation goes for tillage operations.

Tillage is the physical manipulation of the soil with tools and implements which, results in good tilth for better germination and subsequent growth of crops.

Tilth is the physical condition of the soil resulting from tillage. Soil is said to be in good tilth when it is mellow, friable and adequately aerated. Tilth is dynamic. Mechanical forces may change the roughness of the soil surface, the total porosity and bulk density of the tilled layer and the aggregate or clod size. Heavy rainfall and high velocity wind or water destroys the tilth. The action of wetting and drying, freezing and thawing regenerates desirable tilth. The roughness of the soil surface is an index of the amount of water that can be stored in soil depressions and may also be related to the resistance of the soil surface to sealing. Roughness may be related to rate of evaporation, transfer of heat and air between the soil and atmosphere.

The optimum seedbed preparation for raising upland crops, involves the many unit operations. Strength of soil is affected by soil moisture content and can be represented in terms of cone index. Compacted soil has more cone index than the loose soils. Movement of machine in the field causes soil compaction. Sometimes it forms hard pan which is to be broken by the tillage operations to enhance root growth and penetration and infiltration of excess water.

Tillage operations are the basic operation, which need to be performed at proper moisture and temperature condition (climatic factor) to attain high degree of germination and better plant growth. Tillage management and seedbed preparation is crucial for crop establishment, growth and ultimately, yield. Typically, the aims of cultivation are to incorporate crop residue, bury weeds and loosen soil to allow appropriate soil–seed contact, easy flow of nutrients, air and water and unimpeded root penetration and crop growth (Hermawan and Bomke, 1997; Bengough et al., 2006). The use of tillage to prepare seedbeds and the subsequent benefits are well documented. However, the amount of tillage and best practice in terms of optimumsoil physical properties specifically for the establishment period has received less attention in comparison. The influence of a seedbed can vary greatly in terms of soil aggregation and subsequent porosity. This soil arrangement, therefore, has direct impacts on soil temperature, water content, oxygen availability and strength, all of which have the potential to affect the performance of the seedbed and its ability to provide an adequate environment for crop establishment. In a review, Braunack and Dexter (1989) stated as summary of previous works conducted on soil aggregation that aggregates will exhibit differing physical and chemical properties depending on the size of the aggregates, thus influencing the suitability of a seedbed for germination, emergence and root development, by influencing factors such as intra- and inter-aggregate aeration. Schjønning and Rasmussen (2000) found that cultivation methods can have large impacts on surface soil layers, altering both strength and pore dynamics (air and water filled), which can restrict plant growth. The relationship between soil physical properties and the plant root systems are vitally important in this process since they directly affect seedbed quality (Awadhwal and Thierstein, 1985; Aubertot et al., 1999; Dexter, 2004).

We may often wish to get more time but we only get 24 hours, 1,440 minutes or 86,400 seconds each day. The perfect ways to utilize time depends upon skills learned through self analysis, planning, evaluation and self control. Establishing a time management depends on individual’s personality, ability to self motivate and level of self discipline. The objective of this chapter is to focus on benefits of time management, tips for time management, steps for time management and various techniques of time management. Time Series

A series of observations recorded over time is known as a time series. In other words, a time series is a set of observations taken at specified times, usually at equal intervals. For example: Annual retail sales, rainfall measurements, heartbeats per minute, etc. Such studies are to be based on the analysis of time series data collected over time. Thus, the analysis of time series plays an important role in an investigation of economic, social, commercial and even biological phenomenon.

Components of time series

In a long time series, generally, there are following four components:

• Secular trend or long term movements

• Seasonal variations

• Cyclic variations • Random or irregular movements

• Secular trend or long term movements: It is that characteristic of a time series which extends consistently throughout the entire period of time under consideration. It shows a long term tendency of an activity to grow or to decline. The term long period of time in a relative phenomenon and cannot be defined exactly. For some cases a period as small as a weak may be fairly long while in other cases, a period as long as two years may not be assumed long.

Abstract

Being the junction between the continental and the oceanic plates, the coastal zones are always tectonically alert and hence vested with number of aults. The study of LANDSAT ETM FCC imagery revealed one such a major fault along NNE-SSW aligned Tamil Nadu coast from Chennai in the North northeast to Cape Comorin in the South southwest. This Precambrian boundary fault shows signs of repetitive reactivation during Gondwana, Tertiary and Late Holocene periods. While in former two periods it shows indications of faulting, in the latter period, it is manifested in the form of drainage deflections indicating sinistral movements of beds. While such sinistral morphology of the fault seems to be related to the Post collision compression, the seismicities in and in its close proximities indicate the seismic significance of this fault. In the context of natural resources and disasters viz: geothermal springs, flooding and seismicities, this fault demands deeper studies.

Introduction

The coastal regions in general form the junction between the continental and oceanic plates. Hence, the coastal regions are always tectonically active and thus vested with coast parallel, tangential and conjugate faults depending upon the tectonic history of the area. In the Indian subcontinent too, all along the 9000 km long east and west coast margins, number of major faults were mapped by the earlier workers. Significantly, Vardarajan and Ganju (1989) have brought out a comprehensive picture on the lineaments of the entire coastal zone of India using Landsat images. Vemban et al. (1977) earlier inferred faults along certain segments of east coast of Tamil Nadu and observed them to be lithological contacts and also seismogenic in nature. Raiverman et al. (1966) have again inferred earlier a N-S curvilinear fault in Thanjavur deltaic region and attributed it to post drift kinematics of the Indian plate. Ramasamy (1989) has brought out the morphotectonic and morphodynamic model of the east and west coasts of India on the basis of tectonic and geomorphic signatures using Landsat satellite images. Ramasamy (2006) developed a first time comprehensive model on the active tectonics of the Indian Peninsular and in which he brought out detailed information on the varied geomorphic, tectonic and hydrological anomalies and inferred them to be related to the whirling and fracturing of the Indian plate due to the still prevailing N–S to NNE – SSw compressive force which originally drifted the Indian plate to the present position after the breakup of the Gondwana land.

15.1 Introduction

Plant breeding aims at developing genetically improved crop cultivars with economic benefits for small-scale and commercial farmers. Population growth, dwindling agricultural land and global climate change present increasing risk to crop production. Consequently, plant breeding aims to constantly develop crop cultivars with improved yield and quality and tolerant to drought, diseases and pests. Use of genetically improved crop cultivars and better management practices are among the best strategies to increase food production and meet a projected doubling of food demand in the next 40 years. Both the public and private plant breeding sectors face several constraints, including a shortage of professional plant breeders and breeding technicians, limited budget, inadequate facilities and lack of access to information. Successful plant breeding requires adequate infrastructural investment, in addition to the actual breeding activities. The benefits of plant breeding research and development can only be realized on a long-term basis because of the inherent nature of the crops and the eminent breeding procedures involved. Plant breeding involves two main activities, i.e., pre-breeding/ germplasm enhancement and cultivar development per se. These interdependent activities are the controlling factors that determine the pace at which cultivars are released timeously and consistently to farmers. The two phases, in turn, depend upon various factors, e.g., breeding goals, genetics and agronomy of the crop, breeder’s long-term objectives, availability of testing facilities and national cultivar-registration requirements. Despite these factors, there are certain clear steps and breeding procedures found in any conventional breeding programme. These include choice of parents, making crosses among chosen parents, and selection from recombined parents followed by extensive field testing of the candidate cultivars. Maintenance, multiplication and distribution of the seed are the ultimate stages of a breeding programme. Systematically outlined conventional breeding procedures, timeframes and estimated breeding generations are essential to objectively consider the ultimate timescales required to release new and improved cultivars of all crops. The information may assist plant breeding- students, educators, researchers, project advisors, administrators and funding agencies. Dear students, in this chapter we outline the timeframes of conventional breeding procedures of clonally (also called vegetatively) propagated, self-fertilizing (also called self-pollinated) and cross-fertilizing (also called cross-pollinated) crops.

ABSTRACT

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms. is a versatile liana rich in various active compounds having diverse chemical structures. Limited research has been done on the biological properties and the probable medicinal applications of the individual isolated molecules actually responsible for the medicinal nature of the plant. Recent advances in the discovery of active constituents from T. cordifolia and their biological impact in disease cure has led to an increase interest on this plant across the globe. The therapeutic virtue of giloy used in traditional and Indian System of Medicine (ISM) has been well established through advance testing and evaluation, both pre-clinical and clinical trials in different diseased conditions. These studies make this indigenous drug plant a novel candidate for bio-prospection and drug development for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, ulcers, liver disorders, heart diseases, diabetes and post-menopausal syndrome where sufficient treatments are still not available. Over the past few decades, a noteworthy progress has been achieved in cancer prevention and treatment, and still there remains a need for effective treatment program. One of the best possible approaches with immense potential is chemoprevention, which involves the use of natural, synthetic or biological molecules to suppress, reverse or prevent cancer or the progression of cancerous cells. It is most likely that many agents present in specific herbs, herbal products and natural dietary factors will have an effect throughout the process of carcinogenesis. Thus, a detailed chemical investigation with the aim of isolating novel molecules, their structure elucidation, quantification, validation and pharmacological evaluation in terms of its anticancer potential was carried out on T. cordifolia. The present study was designed to isolate and identify new promising anti-cancer candidates from the aqueous alcoholic extract of T. cordifolia using bioassay-guided fractionation.
