Abstract

The Indian Peninsula in general and its southern part in particular has been thought to be a stable shield area and hence inert to younger earth movements and seismicities. However, in addition to fast relapsing seismicities, the studies carried out by earlier workers during the past three decades indicate possible pulsatory tectonism, at least since the Jurassics. The present study is a newer attempt to identify, analyse, and spatially amalgamate a large number of anomalies visibly displayed by the tectonic, fluvial, coastal, and hydrological systems in remote sensing and ground based datasets/observations, and to finally paint a fair picture on the active tectonic scenario of South India. The study reveals that the phenomena, viz. extensive soil erosion, reservoir siltation, sediment dump into the ocean, preferential migration of rivers, restricted marine regression, shrinkage of back waters, withdrawal of creeks, fall of groundwater table, etc., indicate two E–W trending ongoing tectonic (Cymatogenic) archings along Mangalore–Chennai in the north and Cochin–Ramanathapuram in the south. Intervening these two arches, a cymatogenic deep along Ponnani–Palghat–Manamelkudi exhibiting phenomena opposite to the above is observed. In addition, the characteristic tectonic, geomorphic, and hydrological anomalies observed in 1B satellite FCC data, as well as in the field, indicate N–S trending extensional, NE–SW sinistral, and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. These anomalies and the tectonic features deduced there upon, indicate that the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is tectonically active due to the northerly to north– north-easterly directed compressive force related to post collision tectonics. This active tectonic model visualized for South India gives a further clue that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with alternate E–W arching and deepening, along with block and transform faulting from Cape Comorin in the south to the Himalayas in the north.

Introduction

For this reason, geoscientists have not shown much interest in studying the Neo-active-seismotectonics of the southern part of the Indian Peninsula, mostly restricting themselves to the western (Kutch) and central (Son-Narmada) parts of India (Auden 1949, West 1962, Choubey 1970, Biswas and Deshpande 1973, Kailasam 1975, Ghosh 1976, Pal and Bhimashankaran 1976, Crawford 1978, Dessai and Peshwa 1978, Sharma 1978, Guha and Padale 1981, Kaila et al., 1981, 1985, Murty and Mishra 1981, Powar 1981, 1993, Bhagwandas and Patel 1984, Bakliwal and Ramasamy 1987, Merh 1987, Ravishankar 1987, Amalkar 1988, Ramasamy et al. 1991, Gupta 1992, Sareen et al. 1993, Ramasamy 1995a, 1998, and many others).

The relationship between gene and chromosome was suspected at the time of rediscovery of Mendelian^, Laws. During that period Montgomery (1901) and Walter Sutton (1902) working on grasshoppers showed that chromosomes occur in distinct pairs, often of recognizable shape and size, and that synapsis involves the union of maternal and paternal chromosomes, while Winiwarter (1901) concluded from his studies in rabbit ovaries that bivalents in the first meiotic division resulted from the chromosome pairing side by side and not end to end as believed by some other workers of that time . Theodor Bovery (1902) showed from his work on polyspermy in the fertilization of sea urchin eggs that the chromosomes of an individual were not equivalent (genetic information) to one another and hence a full chromosomal complement is essential for normal development of cell. Correns (1902) and Cannon (1902) pointed out close parallelism between Mendelian segregation and chromosome reduction during meiosis and concluded that genes are located on chromosomes but they, like de Vries, supposed that maternal and paternal chromosomes move to opposite poles during meiosis. In the same year Guyer established an understanding that random assortment between different pairs of chromosomes would give the independent assortment of genes required by Mendel. Ultimately Sutton (1903) brought together the ideas from cytology and genetics to clearly show the role of chromosomes in heredity and hence to establish the field of cytogenetics. Boveri also through his work, advanced many of the same ideas and thus the hypothesis correlating genes and chromosome transmission was established, which is known as the “Sutton-Boveri Hypothesis or chromosome theory of inheritance”.

Abstract

Application of ultrasound is one of the most promising uses of novel technologies in food processing. Use of ultrasound at various stages of drying has resulted in significant decrease in drying time and improvement in quality characteristics of dried products. The chapter discusses the principle behind use of ultrasound, general application in food industry with detailed description of various drying processes and equipments assisted by ultrasound.

If we do not treat the environment well, nature will have its own repercussions and we will inevitably have to bear the consequences. We have already begun to suffer for not taking care of mother earth in the past. The earth is warming up each year and this rise in temperature will have its effects on the earths’ inhabitants. Pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, extinction of species, depletion of ozone layer, soil erosion and floods are some of the commonly heard problems of the environment and they are seem to be inter related. The objective of ornamental horticulture is the functional and aesthetic integration of people, building and site, using plants and space as its main tools. The necessity of it in landscape architecture is for positive control of the fast changing landscape for the future. Landscape architecture can help a major way to alleviate the earths’ problems. The landscape which includes urban, agricultural forests and other lands becomes a component of nature and thus ensuring that our landscapes are healthy in the first step towards this goal. The landscape gardener is a necessity because very a few people are capable of selecting the right kind of plants for their grounds; they cannot imagine a landscape picture in terms of varieties and groups, the way an expert can. Planning a piece of land with ornamental plants and features transforming it into a beautiful garden requires experience, patience and knowledge about land topography, soils and climatic factors.

The vividity of the garden depends on its design, features and the most vitally on plants, the key elements which make the garden enliven. Selection of variety of ornamentals is done in order to exhibit different form of growth, flowering time, leaf and stem texture, flower colour etc. Therefore trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, bulbous plants and ornamental grasses usually find place in the garden along with other secondary groups. Plants play a pivotal role in the protection of our environment as well as improving human life. Apart from their physical characteristics, plants aid in cleaning the environment and reducing some of the harsher effects of heat, sound, wind, air and also serves as complementor, attractor, emphasizer, diverter, indicators and provide aesthetic function by creating attractiveness for human activities.

Abnormal seedling: Abnormal seedlings are those seedlings which do not show the capacity for continued development in to normal plants when grown in good quality soil under favourable conditions of water supply, temperature and light.

Abortion: Loss of reproductive structures (e.g. a flower or an ovule) during development or arrest of development of any organ so that it remains imperfect or fails to reach maturity.

Absolute humidity: The amount of water vapour present in a given volume of atmosphere, usually expressed in g water per kg dry air, or g water per cubic meter air.

ABSTRACT

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms. is a versatile liana rich in various active compounds having diverse chemical structures. Limited research has been done on the biological properties and the probable medicinal applications of the individual isolated molecules actually responsible for the medicinal nature of the plant. Recent advances in the discovery of active constituents from T. cordifolia and their biological impact in disease cure has led to an increase interest on this plant across the globe. The therapeutic virtue of giloy used in traditional and Indian System of Medicine (ISM) has been well established through advance testing and evaluation, both pre-clinical and clinical trials in different diseased conditions. These studies make this indigenous drug plant a novel candidate for bio-prospection and drug development for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, ulcers, liver disorders, heart diseases, diabetes and post-menopausal syndrome where sufficient treatments are still not available. Over the past few decades, a noteworthy progress has been achieved in cancer prevention and treatment, and still there remains a need for effective treatment program. One of the best possible approaches with immense potential is chemoprevention, which involves the use of natural, synthetic or biological molecules to suppress, reverse or prevent cancer or the progression of cancerous cells. It is most likely that many agents present in specific herbs, herbal products and natural dietary factors will have an effect throughout the process of carcinogenesis. Thus, a detailed chemical investigation with the aim of isolating novel molecules, their structure elucidation, quantification, validation and pharmacological evaluation in terms of its anticancer potential was carried out on T. cordifolia. The present study was designed to isolate and identify new promising anti-cancer candidates from the aqueous alcoholic extract of T. cordifolia using bioassay-guided fractionation.

7.1 Introduction

For qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytochemicals, chromatography can be used. Gas chromatography is a powerful means of performing qualitative and quantitative measurements of complex mixtures of volatile substances, which are vaporizable without decomposition.Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) system is a widely used instrument for qualitative and quantitative analysis of solid, liquid, and gaseous samples. Samples are converted into gaseous ions and then separated on the basis of their mass-tocharge ratio. This technique is capable of providing information about 1. the qualitative and quantitative composition of both inorganic and organic analytes in complex mixtures; 2. the structure of a wide variety of complex molecular structures; 3. isotopic ratios of atoms in samples; and 4. the structure and composition of solid surfaces. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a physico-chemical separation technique for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of mixtures consisting of compounds soluble in solvents, e.g. all organic compounds and inorganic ions. Advances in the applications of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) for the separation, detection, and qualitative and quantitative determination of compounds has also increased.

1. DEFINITIONS

Propagation : Propagation of plants may be defined as the controlled reproduction of plants by man to perpetuate selected individual or groups of individual plants which have specific value to him or it is the perpetuation of plants as independent units by means of seeds, bulbs, layers, cuttings, or grafts.

• Seed: A seed has been defined as a young plant packed ready to start growing when required.
• Apomixis: Development of seeds without the complete sexual process is known as apomixes and seed produced in this manner is called apomictic seeds.
• Seed dormancy: The embryo of the seed remains in inactive stage from the time of its development to the time it germinates. This failure of the embryo is termed as dormancy of the seed.
• After-ripening: Some seeds germinate fully when freshly harvested, but they germinate after a period of dry storage. The change taking place in such seeds are known as after- ripening.
• Embryo dormancy: Conditions existing within the embryo.
• After-ripening dormancy: Seeds fail to germinate when freshly harvested, but they germinate after a period of dry storage. Such seeds are known as after-ripening dormant seeds. This is due to the physiological changes taking place in embryo.

1. INTRODUCTION

Harvesting is the process of gathering the crops from the fields at maturity. The harvesting of a commodity means the end of the growing season for a particular crop. Harvesting is the most labour-intensive activity of the growing season. Harvesting in general includes an immediate post-harvest handling, the actions taken immediately after removing the crop are pre-cooling, sorting, cleaning, packaging and up to the point of on-farm processing or shipping to the wholesaler or consumer.

Harvest timing is a critical decision that balances the likely weather conditions with the degree of crop maturity. Weather conditions such as frost, rain and unseasonably warm or cold periods can affect yield and quality. These conditions can be avoided by harvesting the commodities earlier than the harvest date, but this may result in poor yield and quality. On the other hand, delayed harvesting also results in a better yield, but increases the risk of weather problems. Thus, proper harvesting timings of horticultural commodities often play an important role.

Assessment of harvesting time is a critical time for growers of fruit and vegetables to decide the accurate period of crop harvesting. Fresh produce is normally ready for harvest when it has developed to the ideal condition for consumption and the condition is usually referred to as harvest maturity. Harvest maturity thus refers to the time when the “fruit” is ready to harvest and the time required to reach market. The harvesting should be done earlier than its ideal maturity for proper marketing.

Most growers decide harvesting time for different commodities by looking and sampling. Judgments are based on colour, size and shape (Sight); texture, hardness or softness (Touch); odour/aroma (Smell); sweetness, sourness, bitterness (Taste) etc. Experience is the best guide for this kind of assessment. Harvest maturity can readily be observed in some fruit crops but it can be more difficult in case of some fruits like avocados remain unripe off the tree after maturity.

A. Diseases

1. Anthracnose

Occurrence & severity status

The Anthracnose [Fig. 14 (A-B)], also called as ‘Stem-break’, is one of the most serious diseases of sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea ) in India. It occurs in all sunnhemp growing areas of India (Mitra 1934; Kempanna et al., 1960; Kundu, 1964; Kumar et al., 2016). Apart from India, its occurrence in several countries of South Tropical Africa, like, Rhodesia (Whiteside,1955), Zimbabwe, and other tropical countries including Trinidad and Tobago (Damm et al., 2009), was also noticed as a major disease (Purseglove, 1974). In many places, the disease is considered as the second most serious disease of sunnhemp, causing wilt and weakening of the stem.

Introduction

Oilseeds are the third most important group of crops after cereals and pulses in India. These are important food crops which also find their place in industrial use. Oilseeds have been an integral component of Indian agriculture since time immemorial. On the oilseeds map of the world, India occupies a prominent position, both in terms of acreage and production. India is the 4^th largest edible oil economy in the world and contributes about 10% of the world oilseeds production, 6-7% of the global production of vegetable oil, and nearly 7% of protein meal. The oilseeds production statistics of the world for the year 2016-17 includes a production of 549.98 million tonnes from an area of 234.57 million ha with the productivity of 2.34 tonnes/ha. The top countries include U.S.A., China and India with U.S.A. ranking first in all area, production and productivity of 39.25 million ha, 126.94 million tonnes and 3.23 tonnes/ha, respectively. Next is China which ranks 2^nd in production and productivity but 3^rd in terms of area; the area, production and productivity being 22.72 million ha, 54.92 million tonnes and 2.42 tonnes/ha, respectively. India ranks 2^nd in terms of area, i.e. 33.83 million ha but 3^rd in both production and productivity being 36.32 million metric tonnes and 1.07 tonnes/ha respectively.

Introduction

Ornamental fish is often used as a generic term to describe aquatic animals kept in the aquarium hobby, including fishes, invertebrates such as corals, crustaceans (e.g., crabs, hermit crabs, shrimps), molluses (e.g., snails, clams, scallops), and also live rock. Live rock is a general term for any type of rock encrusted with, and containing within its orifices, a wide variety of marine organisms including algae and colorful sessile invertebrates. Live rock serves as the principal biological and chemical filter in many marine-type tanks, and the encrusted organisms usually provide much of the background coloration in the tank. Ornamental fish culture is fast emerging as a major branch of aquaculture globally. Aquarium keeping is the second largest hobby in the world next to photography and the ornamental fish and aquatic plant industry is fast gaining importance due to its tremendous economic opportunities and prospects. Ornamental fish keeping is a popular hobby in developed countries and is gaining popularity in many developing countries. The growing interest in aquarium fishes has resulted in steady increase in aquarium fish trade, globally. According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2006), export earnings from ornamental fish trade is US $ 251 million and more than 60% of the production comes from households of developing countries. The wholesale value of the global ornamental fish trade is estimated to be US $ 14 Billion. More than 2500 species of ornamental fishes are traded and some of 30-35 species of fresh water dominate the market. The trade with an annual growth rate of 8 percent offers a lot of scope for development. India’s share in global ornamental fish trade is negligible and at present the ornamental fish export from India is dominated by the wild caught species. The top exporting country is Singapore, followed by Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia and India. The largest importer of ornamental fish is USA. Europe and Japan, China and South Africa are the emerging markets of ornamental fish trade. The aesthetic, attractive colour and appearance of the fish appeal to children and aged alike. As the day passed, ornamental fish keeping become an interesting activity for many, in the process, generating income for the unemployed youth and farmers. The concept of entrepreneurship development, through ornamental fish farming is gaining popularity day-by-day.

Introduction

Citrus is one of the most important fruit crops in the world. Citrus fruits are grown in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Some of the important countries where these fruits are grown include USA, Brazil, Spain, Israel, South Africa, Australia, China, India, Mexico and Morocco. Citriculture as a garden industry dates back to less than one hundred years. Indian citrus industry is the third fruit industry after mango and banana. The important groups of crops in citrus are sweet oranges, mandarins, limes, lemons, grapefruits and pummelo (Singh, 2001). Total world citrus production is about 115525.2 thousand tonnes, whereas in India, the production of citrus fruits is 8267.2 thousand tonnes (Anonymous 2012). The most important commercial Citrus species grown in India are the mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco), followed by sweet orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) and acid lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle). The main cultivars in the mandarin group are the Nagpur mandarin, Coorg mandarin, Khasi mandarin, Hill mandarin and the Kinnow mandarin. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab are the major citrus producing states, while in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Bihar, the fruit is grown to a limited extent. In Rajasthan new plantation of citrus are coming up very well and the main cultivars are Nagpur and Kinnow mandarins.

Among abiotic stresses, low and high temperature stress is very critical for determining the agricultural production. Plants exhibit a maximum rate of growth and development at an optimum temperature or over a diurnal range of temperatures (Fitter and Hay, 1981). When ambient temperature deviates from optimal, physiological, biochemical, metabolic and molecular changes occur within plants. This is an effort of plants to maximize growth and developmental processes and to maintain cellular homeostasis during such adverse conditions. Under increasingly stressful conditions, plants experience progressively more abnormal, impaired or dysfunctional cellular and whole-plant processes until the cardinal temperatures for survival are reached (Fitter and Hay, 1981). At the extremes of the natural temperature range of a plant, the degree of physiological, cellular, metabolic and molecular dysfunction becomes so severe that it leads to death.

Growth constraints and stress result in significant crop losses and therefore the mechanisms underlying endurance and adaptation to these changes have long been the focus of intense research (Bray 2004). Kültz (2005) elaborated two types of responses to a particular kind of stress:

11.1 General

Biogas is generated through a process of anaerobic digestion of organic materials. The materials normally used are human and animal waste, crop residues, agro-industrial waste and other biomass in a combination with water. Biogas production technology contributes in following ways:

(a)It provides a better and cheaper fuel for cooking, lighting and for power generation.

(b)It produces good quality, enriched manure to improve soil fertility.

(c)It provides and effective and convenient ways for sanitary disposal of human excreta, improving the hygienic conditions.

(d)It generates social benefits such as reducing burden on forest for meeting cooking fuel by cutting of tree for fuelwood, reduction in the drudgery of women and children etc.

(e)As a smokeless domestic fuel, it reduces the incidence of eye and lung disease.

(f)It also helps in generation of productive employment.

The biogas technology is primarily based on fermentation of cellulosic rich organic matter under anaerobic conditions. The methane producing bacteria become more active after the creation of anaerobic conditions, thus, the gas produced become rich in methane & carbon dioxide, beside traces of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, oxygen, water vapour etc. depending on the feed material and other conditions. For burning of gas, it is necessary that methane contents should be more than 50 per cent. The complete knowledge of process of methane production including its chemistry, physiology, bio-chemistry, micro-biology and bacteriology has been studied over years in many parts of the world. The culture and isolation of microbes under various environmental conditions have been successfully experimented to improve rate of reaction. The conditions, under which cattle dung, organic wastes, bushes, weeds etc. will produce methane, can be understood through chemistry of fermentation.

Raster transformations involve mathematical manipulation of raster layers to generate new raster images. These transformed raster images either contain the information of interest or highlight the features which are not discernible in the original image. Transformations are also performed to preserve the essential information in reduced number of dimensions or layers. In this chapter, we are going to discuss few most commonly used transformation tools listed below:

Plants are important to humankind not only economically, environmentally and industrially but also spiritually, historically and aesthetically, they sustain human life through direct and indirect gains by providing a wide range of products for survival and prosperity. Bio-aesthetic planning to a large extent is a product of the age. With the advancement in agriculture and increase in population, large settlements developed, marking the beginning of urbanization. More and more people moved to urban areas for comfortable life. Increasing human needs resulted in large-scale exploitation of natural resources, great reduction in forest cover and extinction of many species of flora and fauna. The extent of forest cover is a good indication of the health of the land. The large scale deforestation in recent decades has rendered the sensitive catchment areas and hilly areas particularly vulnerable to soil erosion. Professor Lancelot Hogben coined the term ‘Bio-aesthetic planning’ defined as planning of flora and fauna with the object of beautifying the piece of land (country). Bio-aesthetic planning is an aesthetic branch of Horticulture which deals with planting of ornamental plants in such a way that it creates a picturesque effect. It is a very fascinating and interesting subject. With the greater realization of environmental, ecological and socio- economic benefits of plants, scope of Bio-aesthetic planning has increased further. Bio-aesthetic planning can play important role in environmental amelioration of urban and industrial areas along with their beautification.

I. General information

Trees are the largest plant components of gardens and landscapes. However much architectural features dwarf them, for human beings, they are the largest living entities in the environment. Profoundly influencing our habits, styles of habitation, culture and daily life, trees have been revered, sanctified and given symbolic importance and above all, depended upon as means of livelihood by entire communities through the ages. Through folklore, traditional knowledge and rituals, the usefulness of trees has been handed down from generation to generation-in societies all over the world. In India, cave paintings and carvings in addition to ancient literary works document the aesthetic and medicinal knowledge of our forefathers about trees found in the sub-continent.

Trees differ in stature, branching habit, girth of trunk and branches, canopy structure, outline and crown shape. The colour of the foliage, its texture, glaze, shape and size, foliage colour, floral features and season of flowering also differ among trees. These characteristics in addition to giving distinctiveness, also determine their ornamental use in gardens and landscapes. In tropical gardens evergreen dicotyledons and palms dominate among the trees, whereas in temperate situations evergreen conifers are selected over the deciduous dicots for tree planting. Palms among trees are universally grown as avenue trees or as clumps in areas where they can be easily grown while the other trees are grown as such or pruned and trained into various forms or as bonsai in gardens.

Downy mildew has been reported on a wide range of ornamentals, especially those in home gardens, but only in a few instances the diseases have been sufficiently severe and widespread .Generally the diseases have been of most concern in a few ornamentals grown as crops either out doors or under glass or in nurseries, where many seedlings are raised in close proximity, often under humid conditions which favour this disease. 11.1. Downy Mildews of Anemone (Windflower)

Two downy mildews are reported on cultivated anemones. The one is caused by Plasmopara pygmaea while the other is caused by Peronospora sp.

It was first recorded in Britain on decaen anemones near Liskeard, Cornwall, in september 1917

Symptoms
It causes blackening of the foliage of the planting. The sporangiophores emerged from stomata at the periphery of the blackened zone. The fine white mildew covers the under surface of the leaves. Plants become discolored with aborted stamens. Oospores are found in the discolored tissues.

The word biscuit is derived from Danis biscoctus which is Latin for twice cooked bread and refers to bread rusks that were made for mariners (ships biscuits) since the Middle Ages. The dough pieces were baked and then dried out in another cooler oven. All biscuits are made with flour (usually wheat flour) and all have low moisture content and thereby have long shelf life if protected from moisture and oxygen. It includes items also known as crackers (that make a noise of cracking when broken), Hard sweet and semi –sweet biscuits, cookies (which is the name that originated from Dutch word koekje meaning a small cake) and wafers, which are baked between hot plates from a fluid batter. The name cookie was adopted in North America where the term ‘biscuit’ can be confused with small soda raised breads or muffins. In other countries the term cookie is used primarily for wire cut products of rather rough shape, which often contain large pieces of various ingredients such as nuts, etc. The term ‘biscuit’ is used in Britain to describe a flat, crisp, baked product; the term cookie is reserved for something softer and thicker. Cookies are made from soft wheat flour and are characterized by formula high in sugar and shortening and relatively low in water. Similar product is known as biscuit in our country. In USA the term ‘cookie’ covers any flat, crisp, baked good. Cracker is a term reserved for biscuit of low sugar and fat content, frequent bland or savoury. Crackers are usually made from developed dough whereas cookies are made from weaker flour. These foods have in common their ability to stay palatable for a long period of time. Women empowerment has been widely recognized as an important goal in global development process. The term “empowerment” was coined in the second half of the seventeenth century (Oxford English Dictionary). It gained momentum in USA in 1960s when the activists of Black Panat Movement used the term ‘empowerment’ in the context of political mobilization. In 1980s the term was adopted by NGOs worldwide to signify an alternative development agenda for poverty alleviation based on principles of participation and self help. During this period, the participation and self help came to forefront. There after it has entered many fields of theory and practice. Since 1980s, the world has witnessed the concept, used to describe this phenomenon (empowerment).

The voiceless and powerless are the common elements that need the concept of empowerment in terms of socio-economic, technological, cultural and political development. In the context of power, empowerment depends on two things. These are: power can change and power can extend. The concept came to exist that power can change and power can extend giving the term ‘empowerment’ as the power is created in relationship, power and power relationship can certainly change. Therefore, empowerment simply is a process of change.

Introduction

Soybean has earned a place of prominence in world agriculture as one of the most important food crops contributing to protein and oil production. Pertaining to the family Fabaceae, soybean is a legume with over 42% protein and 20% oil in its seeds. The crop fits into the production system of monsoon rainy season of India during the period from June to October and can be grown on wide variety of soils; but performs best on fertile heavier soils of clay and silt.

Soybeans originated in Southeast Asia and were first domesticated by Chinese farmers around 1100 BC. By the first century AD, soybeans were grown in Japan and many other countries. Soybean seed from China was planted by a colonist in the British colony of Georgia in 1765.

Introduction of soybean to Indian subcontinent dates back to 1000 AD through silk route from north-eastern India and Himalayan mountains. The black-seeded soybean has been traditionally grown in North and north-eastern regions of India and further spread to different parts of the country. This black-seeded soybean, Kalitur, was the vehicle for soybean revolution in India. The major initiative on soybean cultivation was undertaken during 1963-64 by G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar and JNKVV Agricultural University, Jabalpur in collaboration with University of Illinois, USA. The cultivation has further picked up after the researchers took advantage of yellow-seeded material to develop high-yielding varieties that suited Indian conditions. Soybean cultivation got momentum during the 1970s as the vast monsoon fallow lands of Madhya Pradesh provided appropriate niche for its cultivation. Presently soybean is cultivated on nearly 10 million ha land with likely production of above 10 million tonnes.

5.1 INTRODUCTION

One of the generalizations that can be made about soils is that the particles of which they are composed together have a nett negative charge. There are exceptions: for example, some iron- and aluminium-rich tropical soils can attain a positive charge at low enough pH, but such cases are rare. It is nonetheless a fact that most anions are held strongly by the soil complex, and it is the purpose of this chapter to look at some of the reasons why this is so. Historically, the impetus to research in this area has largely been the practical necessity to understand the behaviour of applied phosphate fertilizer, and it is some indication of the complexity of the problems involved that, even after decades of effort by soil chemists and agronomists, this understanding is still far from complete. The reason for this is partly that the soil surfaces themselves are, as has been described by Greenland and Mott (1978) in the companion volume, the product of a ‘dirty’ environment. This generally means that phosphate added to the system has to exchange on sorption with an inadequately characterized suite of anions presorbed on ill-defined surfaces. There are also in the case of phosphate, possibilities of simultaneous precipitation. Faced with these problems, the trend in the literature over the past ten years or so has been to investigate in detail the physical chemistry of the sorption of anions onto simple surfaces which are fairly well understood, in the expectation that this will lead to ultimate comprehension of behaviour in the natural system. The results of many relevant experiments have only recently been published, and so some parts of the account are still at the discussion stage in the literature. This is especially true of phosphate, which looks destined to be a joker in the anion pack for some time to come.

8.1 INTRODUCTION

The development of a soil profile involves the mobilization of major and minor elements and their subsequent deposition elsewhere in the profile or removal in the drainage water. For a full understanding of these processes we need to know what are the forms and reactivities of the soil constituents, the nature and mode of action of the mobilizing agents, the forms in which the mobilized material is transported—whether colloidal or in true solution, whether in ionic or complex form, whether alone or in association with other soil constituents—as well as its stability towards oxidation and reduction, microbial action, pH, and sorption and coprecipitation. The availability of micronutrients to plants is presumably governed by factors such as these. The current concern with problems of soil contamination has brought to the attention of soil chemists numerous toxic metals that were previously regarded as essentially the province of the geochemist.

It is probably true to say that no one of the factors listed above can be considered in isolation, but so far as any one factor is of dominant importance, this is nature of the mobilizing species; this determines the form in which the metal is transported, and its ultimate fate in the soil or in the drainage water.

This chapter is an attempt to summarize our present knowledge of the processes responsible for the mobilization and immobilization of metals in soils.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moecnch, 2n = 2x = 20, grass family Gramineae/ Poaceae, often cross-pollinated, 6% cross-pollination on an average, 730Mb genome, about 25% the size of maize or sugarcane) is a staple food crop for millions of poor people in the semi-arid tropics of Africa and Asia. It is one of the important dry-land crops grown in marginal soils and a source of feed, fodder and bio-fuel apart from food. It is a short-day C4 plant, and its easy adaptability to hot and dry agro-ecologies makes it a climate change-resilient crop. Sorghum is considered as an often cross-pollinated species, with outcrossing up to 6 % depending on the genotype and growing conditions.

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. 2n = 2x = 40, essentially a self-pollinated oil seed crop, family Leguminosae), also known as a miracle crop with on average 40% protein and 20% oil and one of the globally “Four Big Crops” namely rice, wheat, corn and soybean. As per FAOSTAT-2016, global soybean acreage, production and productivity are 121 million ha, 335 million tons and 2755 kg per ha for the year 2016. As per this statistics, top ten soybean producing countries are USA (108 million tons), Brazil (87 million tons), Argentina (53 million tons), China (12 million tons), India (10 million tons), Paraguay (10 million tons), Canada (6 million tons), Ukraine (4 million tons), Bolivia (3 million tons) and Uruguay (3 million tons).

Pollution: Environmental pollution in general, may be described as the contamination of the environment with harmful wastes arising mainly from human activities. These activities release certain materials which produce pollution in the atmosphere water and soil. In simple words, environmental pollution may be defined as direct or indirect changes as a result of human activities, which adversely influence the biological and non-biological equilibrium of the environment.

This chapter reports the analysis of the data collected from Phase One and Phase Two of the research .The chapter is organized in three sections. The first section presents the analysis of the data collected in the first phase through the administration of the survey questionnaire (Appendix-I). It deals with a study of the potential of Internet as a communication tool through an account of the Internet usage habits of the two cities followed by a presentation of their perception, attitudes and internet adoption among the people.

For qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytochemicals, chromatography can be used. Gas chromatography is a powerful means of performing qualitative and quantitative measurements of complex mixtures of volatile substances, which are vaporizable without decomposition.Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) system is a widely used instrument for qualitative and quantitative analysis of solid, liquid, and gaseous samples. Samples are converted into gaseous ions and then separated on the basis of their mass-tocharge ratio.

ALLIC: soil family class term used in Oxisols as a calcareous and reaction class category. Soils placed in the allic class are acid and have low CEC with high amounts of KCl-extractable aluminum in a layer at least 30 cm thick within the control section. If used for agriculture, these Oxisols require large inputs of lime to displace the aluminum and raise pH.

Forecasting and warning systems for pests and diseases play an important role in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and in farm advisory work. Forecasting pest outbreaks during the growing season and applying control measures only when necessary is very important in conventional farming, but also in organic farming, to increase profitability while, at the same time, minimising negative effects on flora, fauna, and groundwater (Sigvald, 2014). Number of disease-warning systems have been developed and validated for dozens of crops. A few are in wide use by growers, and represent encouraging success stories in IPM. Most warning systems, however, have not made the transition from scientific validation to real-world application. his implementation shortfall is not limited to diseasewarning systems, but also characterizes most other types of agricultural decision support systems (DSSs), whose rate of grower adoption is widely perceived as disappointing (Mark L. Gleason et.al., 2008). 

8.1 Pest Risk Analysis

Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) is a form of risk analysis conducted by regulatory plant health authorities to identify the appropriate phytosanitary measures required to protect plant resources against new or emerging pests and regulated pests of plants or plant products. Specifically pest risk analysis is a term used within the International Plant Protection Conventions (IPPC) (Article 2.1) and is defined within the glossary of phytosanitary terms as “the process of evaluating biological or other scientific and economic evidence to determine whether an organism is a pest, whether it should be regulated, and the strength of any phytosanitary measures to be taken against it. In a phytosanitary context, the term plant pest, or simply pest, refers to any species, strain or biotype of plant, animal or pathogenic agent injurious to plants or plant products and includes plant pathogenic fungi, bacteria, fungus-like organisms, viruses, nematodes and virus like organisms as well as insects, mites and weeds.

Diverse soil and climatic conditions prevailing in different parts of the country offer scope for cultivation of a variety of crops in India. Around 250 crops either cultivated or grown under natural habitat are used for vegetable purpose. The crops and varieties vary in their soil and climatic requirements, cultivation practices, resistance to pests and diseases, quality etc.

Considering the climatic conditions for growing vegetable crops and for evolving zone wise technologies and recommendations, the entire country is divided into eight agro- climatic zones under the All India Co-ordinated Research Project (Vegetable Crops) as given below:

Pyrolysis is a process that utilizes heat or fire to separate biomass, derived from the ancient Greek words “pyro” meaning fire, and “lysis” meaning separation.
