Lilium is a high-value bulbous cut flower known for large, attractive and fragrant flowers and extensive international demand. This chapter examines its taxonomy, origin, genetics, botanical description and major hybrid groups, including Asiatic and Oriental lilies. It explains bulb preparation, storage, planting, climate, soil, greenhouse management, nutrition, irrigation and crop regulation. Pest and disease management, harvesting, grading, postharvest treatment and yield are also presented. Special attention is given to commercial standards for Oriental and LA Hybrid lilies, including stem length, flower number, bunching and presentation. The chapter provides a comprehensive foundation for modern commercial lily production.

ABSTRACT

The use of engineered nano-materials has been increased as a result of their positive impact on many sectors of the economy including agriculture. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are now used to enhance seed germination, plant growth and as anti-microbial agents to control plant diseases. This study investigated the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the aqueous solution of three medicinally important plants (such as Spondius mombin L., Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl and Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr & Perry leaf extract in room temperature (350C). AgNPs present in the leaf confirmed by colour change, UV-VIS spectrum analysis, average size of AgNPs confirmed by PAS. FTIR measurement were carried out to identify the other possible biomolecule groups such as alkenes, esters, phenols, alcohols and aromatic. Leaf extract AgNPs were shown significantly higher antimicrobial activities against four species of bacteria. This findings suggest that the seed germination percentage, relative seed germination rate, relative shoot and root growth and germination index of the tested plant depends upon concentrate gradient of AgNPs.

Introduction

This chapter gives first hand information on PCR for beginners. PCR is used to amplify a short, well-defined part of a DNA strand. This can be a single gene, or just a part of a gene. As opposed to living organisms, the PCR process can copy only short DNA fragments; usually up to 10 kb (kb stands for kilo base pairs). Certain methods can copy fragments up to 40 kb in size, which is still much less than the chromosomal DNA of a eukaryotic cell-for example, a human cell contains about three billion base pairs (Kary Mullis, 1983).

Biomass fuels are a potential source of renewable energy. One of the major barriers to their widespread use is that biomass has a lower energy content than traditional fossils fuels, which means that more fuel is required to get the same amount of energy. When combined — low energy content with low density -the volume of biomass handled increases enormously. Compaction or densification is one way to increase the energy density and overcome handling difficulties.

Densification means compaction of loose material or to increase density of loose biomass so that its volumetric efficiency can be increased. Densification essentially involves two parts; the compaction under pressure of loose material to reduce its volume and to agglomerate the material so that the product remains in the compressed state. The resulting solid may be a briquette, a pellet and a cube. It will be briquettes if roughly, it has a diameter greater than 30 mm. Smaller sizes are normally termed pellets though the distinction is arbitrary. The process of producing pellets is also different from the typical briquetting processes. The densified product can be developed in the cubical shapes as well.

If the material is compacted with low to moderate pressure (0.2-5 MPa), then the space between particles is reduced. Further, increasing the pressure will, at a certain stage particular to each material, collapse the cell walls of the cellulose constituent, thus approaching the physical, or dry mass and more, density of the material. In India, the hatchery survival rate of carp larvae remains relatively low at around 40% (Warnecke and Pluta, 2003). Amidst these challenges, emerging technologies stand as a transformative force with the potential to reshape the trajectories of rural women. Recognizing this potential, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) emphasizes the capacity of technological interventions to ameliorate challenges faced by women in rural areas.

1.1 Introduction

The human population is growing rapidly at an alarming rate, disproportionately to the production of food supplies, which will necessitate production of more food in the near future. The human population has already crossed the 7 billion mark and is expected to rise over 8-10 billion by 21st century. More than 800 million people are reported to suffer from malnutrition (Matson et al., 1997).  Thereby necessitating the need for more food production. Presently, agriculture faces the double challenge of feeding a fast growing population and at the same time prevents the degradation of the agricultural resource base. There appear to be two options for developing countries; either to improve agriculture through modernization, by emphasizing pesticides, fertilizers, machinery and modern varieties of crops; or use sustainable agriculture, promoting improved traditional, small-scale techniques (Pretty, 1999).

Developing effective strategies for improving and stabilizing rainfed crop production continues to be a prime concern in the semi-arid region of western India. Rain water management is most crucial aspect in rainfed production systems. Growing uncertainties associated with rainfall pattern (Ali et al., 2007) add to the complexity of the challenge. The medium deep black soil region of Rajasthan is spread predominantly in Jhalawar, Kota, Baran, Bundi, and Sawai Madhopur districts of South-eastern Rajasthan (Fig. 1). This region is characterized by almost flat alluvial plains interspersed with hills of Arawali and Vindhyan ranges and rock outcrops.

Most of these crops have acclimatized and adapted to diverse ecological conditions offered by the Indian Sub-continent to such an extent that many appear natural to the land, and have thrown enormous genetic diversity, making India either a secondary center of diversity for crops such as pearl millet, sorghum, maize, amaranths, cowpea, niger, safflower, muskmelon, pumpkin, chilies and others or regional center of diversity for crops such as barley, grain amaranth, buckwheat, pearl millet, foxtail millet, chickpea, bottle gourd and others. The Context

The global food system is dynamic, with newer challenges every day with altering production and consumption subtleties. Roles played by various stakeholders of the global agricultural food system and rural development has changed tremendously in the last few decades. Smallholder farmer stakeholders to multinational companies are affected differently by the present difficulties likethe pandemic, climate change, and other factors. The various stakeholders respond, play roles to the challenges differently, and eventually become the agricultural value chains. The newer challenges affect the vulnerable actors like women, smallholder farmers, etc., who constitute asignificant portion of the value chains. This is specifically so in developing countries like India, where the processes of the ‘feminization of agriculture’progresses exponentially. Managing sucha value chain is highly challenging as access and sustainability of various actors differ considerably. Agro-advisory service toolkit for gender-responsive value chain analysis and development aims to select and analyze value chains for opportunities to improve the vulnerable situation and its actors seeking for resilience and reducing gender inequalities. It is now considered a development strategy to promote economic growth. There is an urgent need that thesmallholder farming systems are integrated into the value chains to serve local, national, regional, and global markets.

The chapter presents a brief overview of the gender-responsive value chain concept, factors that limit women’s participation in the value chain, interventions to improve the efficiency of value chains in a gendered perspective, and the development of value chain tools for addressing gender inequitiesin the agricultural system, and the challenges faced.
