The coastal agro ecosystem is very important among the different agro ecosystems of our country both economically and environmentally. It spans over a length of 8129 sq. km. covering 9 states and 2 Island ecosystems. Agriculture and allied activities constitute the single largest component of India’s economy, contributing nearly 27 per cent of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the year 1999-2000 (TERI, 2002). Agriculture exports accounts for 13 to 18 per cent of total annual exports of the country (MoF, 2002). However, given that 62 per cent of the cropped area is still dependent on rainfall (MoEF, 2002). Coastal agricultural region comprises of hinterland, which has a varied geometric and topographical features of mountains valley, coastal plains, riverine systems, climatic conditions, different soils and water bodies, vegetation ranging from rich tropical rain forests to coastal mangroves and a wide range of crops that are cultivated in this region (Table 1). The agro climatic conditions of the coastal zones are congenial for growing various field and horticultural crops.

Soil is considered one of the world’s limited, non-renewable resources. Under cropland conditions, it takes between 200 and 1000 years for 2.5cm of topsoil to form (Piementel et al., 1995). The continued maintenance of fertile soil is essential in order to meet basic human needs. It strengthens the provision of ecosystem services such as food production and climate regulation, and provides the basis of livelihoods for millions of people across the world (Ma, 2005). The multi-functionality of soils is key to the sustainable use of land and soils. A healthy soil performs six essential functions (Andrews et al., 2004) namely: i) Physical Stability and Support, ii) Water Relations, iii) Resistance and resilience- iv) Nutrient Cycling, v) Biodiversity and Habitat and vi) Filtering and Buffering. These soil functions are controlled by various soil properties. Among them soil structure is one of the most important properties of soil, which describes soil condition and has a great influence on crop production.

For plant analysis to be meaningful, collection of particular plant part(tissue) at the right stage of growth is very important. A research worker in soil fertility is generally interested in finding out the nutrient uptake by crop at different stages. The stage at which nutrient uptake is to be studied will vary with different crops. One may also be interested in collecting a plant sample when some abnormality is observed in the plants and a nutrient deficiency or toxicity is suspected. In such cases no time should be lost in collecting the sample otherwise secondary reactions that often take place in the mineral content of plants will conceal the real cause of deficiency or toxicity. In such cases only the affected plants are to be sampled as compared to general sampling technique described below.

For research projects each plot receiving differential fertilizer or some other treatment is to be sampled separately. For general advisory purposes one sample would be good enough for the entire field (not exceeding 2 hectares). One should, however, take care that the sample comes from a field or a part there of having a uniform stand. If a field is patchy and differences in stand and plant growth are obvious, each such area should be sampled separately.

A nursery is a place, where seedling, saplings, trees, shrubs, and other plant materials are grown and maintained until they are placed in a permanent place.

Advantages of Nursery

1. The area being small and compact, it is convenient and easy to grow large number of seedlings per unit area.
2. Management of favourable growing conditions becomes easy and feasible.
3. Easy management of pests and diseases in compact area.
4. Establishment of disease free and virus free scion bank.
5. Ensure optimum utilization of labour, water, nutrients and other inputs.
6. Ensure easy and cheap availability of plants.
7. Promotion of export through supply and processing of quality plant materials.

Entrepreneurship: the Concept and Definitions

Entrepreneurship is the capability to improve, arrange and continue a business enterprise, along with any of its uncertainties to make a profit. We can say an example of entrepreneurship is the starting of a new business, a new venture with some challenges and specific objectives.

Meaning of Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is defined as one person who has the ability and desire to establish, administer and succeed in a startup venture along with the risk entitled to it, to make profits. The best example of entrepreneurship is the starting of a new business venture. Entrepreneurs are often known as a source of new ideas or innovators and bring new ideas in the market by replacing old ones with a new invention.

According to Cole (1949), an Entrepreneur represents an individual or a group of individuals, who conceive, initiate and maintain for a sufficiently long period a social institution which produces economic goods or to put it differently.

Communication: Communication is an act by which one person gives to or receives from another person, the information about the person’s need, desires and perceptions. The way one teacher talk with a student, the way one official personnel talk with an individual, like them one entrepreneur should communicate with their customer to uplift of their enterprise. Monetary policies are the policies used to regulate the money supply, cost, and availability of credit in the economy. Monetary policy is considered as an important tool of controlling inflation in the economy.

Central banks use monetary policy to guide the economy. The ability of monetary policy to influence the economy is not absolute. It is affected by several variables, such as how adaptable the economy can expand or contract (supply and demand) and the link between monetary policy and economic development. For example, when people have more pessimistic expectations of inflation, they tend to hold less money and monetize more debt. Economic growth tends to be positively correlated with certain financial factors. For instance, higher inflation, an increased money supply, and lower interest rates are often associated with stronger economic growth. Plus, people's expectations regarding future inflation can also impact economic growth. A reduction in available money can weaken the impact of monetary policy. To accurately assess the effectiveness of monetary policy, it's important to consider. Flexibility and limitations in economic supply and demand. The relationship between monetary policy and economic growth. Expectations of inflation It's also essential to account for potential drawbacks and unexpected effects of monetary policy. Additionally, monetary policy should consider the interaction between monetary and fiscal policies. In formulating domestic monetary policy, the global economic landscape holds significant sway. Factors such as the global economy, currency exchange rates, and international trade can profoundly influence a country's monetary policy framework. Moreover, in today's interconnected financial system, central banks must be cognizant of the broader implications their monetary actions may have on other economies, highlighting the need for a global perspective in monetary policy decision making.

1. Introduction

Universal development through Education for all had been a prominent feature earlier during Millennium Development Goals and recently it has gained a fresh momentum when United Nations General Assembly set 17 inspirational Sustainable development Goals. Quality Education is the focus of SDG 4, “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (Sustainable Development Goals, 2023). Role of education in achieving these sustainable development goals in developing countries is well recognized by OECD. OECD in its report on ‘Education at a Glance 2013’ states that “Educational attainment is frequently used as a measure of human capital and the level of an Individual’s skills. The level of educational attainment is the percentage of population that has reached a certain level of education. Higher levels of educational attainment are strongly associated with higher employment rates” (OECD, 2013). Furthermore, OECD in its report published in 2017 explains that “Making SDG 4 a reality will transform lives around the globe. Education is so central to the achievement of a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable planet that failure to achieve this particular SDG puts at risk the achievement of the 17 SDGs as a Whole” (OECD, 2017).

Climate change has undoubtedly resulted in greater public and scientific involvement. Climate change refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity (IPCC, 2007). The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) defined it as a change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity which alters the composition of the global atmosphere and that is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods. World Meteorology Organisation defines climate change as statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period (typically decades or longer). 

Agriculture and Food Security

Food security refers to a situation when people gain physical and access to enough food to meet the dietary requirements for a healthy life for all times. A household can have food security when all the members lead a hunger free life. It is estimated that nearly 800 million people in the world go to bed hungry every night. Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (World Food Summit, 1996). This definition gives rise to four dimensions of food security: availability of food, accessibility (economically and physically), utilization (the way it is used and assimilated by the human body) and stability of these three dimensions.

Integrated Disease Management (IDM) in horticultural crops is a multifaceted approach aimed at mitigating the impact of plant diseases while ensuring sustainable production systems. Recognizing the complex interactions between pathogens, plants, and the environment, IDM integrates various control measures, including cultural, biological, chemical, and genetic strategies. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, proper sanitation, and selection of disease-resistant cultivars form the foundation of IDM, reducing disease pressure and creating unfavourable conditions for pathogen development. Biological control agents, including beneficial microbes and natural enemies of plant pathogens, play a crucial role in regulating disease populations and promoting plant health. Chemical interventions, when necessary, are judiciously applied and integrated with other strategies to minimize environmental impact and preserve beneficial organisms. Advances in molecular genetics have also contributed to IDM through the development of disease-resistant crop varieties with enhanced genetic resistance to specific pathogens. Overall, IDM offers a holistic and sustainable approach to disease management in horticultural crops, emphasizing proactive measures to prevent disease outbreaks and minimize the need for reactive interventions. Continued research, education, and collaboration among stakeholders are essential for advancing IDM practices and ensuring their effective implementation in horticultural production systems.

The world's fisheries have long served as a critical source of nourishment and economic livelihood for millions, yet the sustainability of these resources faces ever-increasing challenges. As fish populations dwindle due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and the looming uncertainties of climate change, innovative solutions are more urgently required than ever before. Enter Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS), a groundbreaking technology that is poised to revolutionize the realm of fisheries management and aquaculture.

The seventh-largest country in the world, India has a total size of 328 million hectares (mha). As of 2015–16, only 42.6% of the overall geographical area, or around 140 mha, is under cultivation, with nearly half of this land (156.4 mha) being arable. Despite accounting for only 16.5% of India’s GDP, the agricultural industry employs the greatest percentage of people (about 42.3% in 2019), including 71% of women working in rural regions.

Concurrently, connectivity serves as the backbone of digital transformation, facilitating communication, collaboration, and access to information on a global scale (ITU, 2021). Skill development, particularly in digital literacy, has become indispensable in an increasingly digitized society, empowering individuals to thrive in both personal and professional domains (European Commission, 2019).

A key challenge for the years to come is feeding a rapidly growing human population while lowering the impact of food production on the environment. This is particularly true for low and middle-income countries where the demand for animal protein is likely to rise and further increase several folds in existing environmental changes (e.g., droughts, floods, extensive wildfires) have in recent years led to major food crises. To achieve these goals, food production not only needs to be increased, but most of all, good husbandry practices must be followed to reduce its negative impacts on the environment. Several studies have suggested that shifting the human diet towards increased consumption of f ish and seafood could be a solution to the need for protein that would sustain human and environmental health. In fact, fish and seafood consumption is forecast to increase by 27% on the horizon of 2030, mostly sustained by the aquaculture sector, which is expected to grow by 62% during the same period. The aquaculture industry contributes significantly to livelihood, food security, and poverty alleviation, with over 100 million people estimated to rely on aquaculture for their living. Fish is a cheap source of animal protein, and the current per capita consumption of fish in India is around 9 kg per annum, which is compared to the 11 kg recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Presently, the contribution of the fisheries sector to the gross domestic product (GDP) and agriculture GDP has been estimated to be 1.2 and 4.2%, respectively.

As on 31st March 2023 total area under organic certification process (registered under National Programme for Organic Production) is 10.17 mha (2022-23).

Among all the states, Madhya Pradesh has covered largest area under organic certification followed by, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. India is bestowed with lot of potential to produce all varieties of organic products due to its various agro climatic conditions.
