A broader definition of a tool is an entity used to interface between two or more domains that facilitates more effective action of one domain upon the other. The most basic tools are simple machines. For example, a crowbar simply functions as a lever. The further out from the pivot point, the more force is transmitted along the lever. A hammer typically interfaces between the operator’s hand and the nail the operator wishes to strike.
A telephone is a communication tool that interfaces between two people engaged in conversation at one level. And between each user and the communication network at another. It is in the domain of media and communications technology that a counterintuitive aspect of our relationships with our tools first began to gain popular recognition.
Marshall McLuhan famously said “We shape our tools. And then our tools shape us.” McLuhan was referring to the fact that our social practices co-evolve with our use of new tools and the refinements we make to existing tools.

Fundamentally toposheet represents a kind of map in which topographic features of particular area is given details on the map features in two dimensional land surfaces. It shows both horizontal and vertical portion of the terrain with a combination of contour lines, contours, symbols, labels and related representation together in one piece of paper. Toposheet portray the shapes, location of mountains, many natural and manmade features, and the toposheet combinedly uses for extracting accurate information about particular area containing land surface features.

6.1 Introduction

Torrefaction is a thermophilic process of biomass conversion into a solid, friable, homogenous coal-like material, which has better fuel characteristics than the original biomass. Torrefaction involves the heating of biomass material in the absence of air at 250 to 300°C temperature. Torrefaction produces high-grade hydrophobic nature solid biofuels from various streams of woody biomass or agro residues.Torrefied biomass has high energy density then the original biomass which make torrefied biomass as renewable alternate source for power generation in coal power plant. Torrefied biomass being hydrophobic in nature can be stored easily for longer duration with negligible biological degradation. At 250-300°C temperature volatilization has been taking place and around 30% mass of the biomass is reduced as compared to original untorrefied biomass with net energy loss of approximately around 10%.The end product is a predictable, homogeneous, hydrophobic, high value solid biofuel with far higher energy density and calorific value than the original biomass feedstock. During the torrefaction process a combustible gas is released, which can also utilised to provide heat to the process. The process diagram of torrefaction process is shown in Fig. 6.1.

Torsion, or twisting, of one or more segments of the alimentary canal is a serious and often life-threatening condition in animals. It involves the abnormal rotation of the gastrointestinal tract along its axis, resulting in obstruction, vascular compromise, and subsequent tissue death. Torsion can affect differentparts of the alimentary canal, including the stomach, intestines, and cecum, and  is more commonly observed in certain species and breeds due to anatomical and environmental factors.
This condition requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to minimize morbidity and mortality. This discussion provides a comprehensive understanding of torsion, its pathophysiology, causes, clinical signs, diagnostic methods, and management strategies.
Pathophysiology of torsion
The alimentary canal is suspended in the abdominal cavity by mesenteric attachments that contain blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics. When a segment of the canal twists along its mesenteric axis:
1. Mechanical obstruction: The lumen becomes occluded, preventing the passage of ingesta or gas.

The torsion or displacement of the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum are significant conditions affecting ruminants, particularly dairy cattle. These gastrointestinal disorders result in severe digestive disruptions, metabolic imbalances, and, if untreated, life-threatening complications. This chapter delves into the causes, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies for these conditions, focusing on each stomach compartment of ruminants.
Anatomy and function of rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum Ruminants have a complex stomach with four compartments:
1. Rumen: The largest compartment responsible for microbial fermentation and digestion of fibrous feed.
2. Reticulum: Works closely with the rumen in fermentation and acts as a sorting chamber.
3. Omasum: Absorbs water, electrolytes, and VFAs while filtering digesta.
4. Abomasum: Functions as the true stomach, secreting acid and enzymes for protein digestion.
Torsion or displacement in any of these compartments disrupts their normal functioning, leading to severe health issues.
Displacement or torsion of the rumen
Rumen displacement or torsion is less common than issues in the abomasum but can still occur under specific circumstances.

Definition
The residue of incineration at 550-600ºC is the crude ash.

Reagent
Dilute hydrochloric acid -approximately 5 N prepared from concentrated hydrochloric acid. Dissolve 445 ml conc. hydrochloric acid (about 36 percent HCl) in one litre distilled water. 

Procedure for Total Ash Estimation
Take a vitreosil crucible in oven at 100ºC for six hours, remove and keep it in a desiccator and weigh up to constant weight. About 5-10 g of sample is taken in the weighted vitreosil crucible. The material in the crucible is charred on a low flame and the crucible is then kept in muffle furnace and temperature is allowed to raise to 600ºC and kept constant for two hours. It is removed on cooling and kept in a desiccator  and weight of crucible is taken.

Introduction

A haemocytometer is a single piece of glass with an H-shaped trough forming two counting areas. Hemocytometers are used to determine the total cell count and viability of many different cell types The full grid on a hemocytometer contains nine squares, each of which is 1 mm¹. Each counting area is defined by a grid system. It has supports that hold the cover glass at the proper distance (0.1 mm) above these areas for the calculation of the concentration per volume of liquid.

Hardness is the total soluble Ca and Mg Salts (in same cases Fe salts). It includes sulphates and chlorides along with carbonate, bicarbonate and hydroxide salts. Soft water: 0-100 mg/L, Hard water: 100 - 300 mg/L, Very hard water: > 300 mg/L CaCO3. Total hardness should be 50- 300 mg/L. Very hard water causes osmoregulatory stress to fish. Hardness below 50 mg/L reduces growth of plankton.
Reagents
1. 10.01M EDTA solution: Dissolve 3.72 g disodium salt of EDTA in distilled water and make the volume 1L by shaking.
2. Eriochrome Black T (EBT) Indicator: Add 0.2 g dry Eriochrome powder to 50 ml of triethyl amine. Add 5 ml absolute alcohol and shake it.
3. Ammonium chloride-Ammonium hydroxide buffer solution: Dissolve 17.5g ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) in 142 ml of ammonia solution (NH4OH). Add distilled water to make the volume 250 ml.
Procedure
1. Take 50ml water sample in a 250 ml conical flask.
2. Add 2 ml buffer solution and 5 drops of EBT indicator.
3. Wine-red colour will appear.
4. Titrate against 0.01M EDTA till the colour changes into bright greenish blue.

Gravimetric Method — Principle

Total lipids in plasma consist of neutral fats, phospholipids, chloesterol esters and free cholesterol. Minor components include non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), phosphatides and sphingo myelin. Total lipids in serum or plasma are extracted using ethyl alcohol and petroleum  ether, separated and weighed after drying at 105ºC.

Procedure
Pipette 5 ml serum in a separating funnel, add 5 ml ethyl alcohol and 12.5 ml pertroleum ether. Shake the contents of funnel two times for 3 min. atleast. Keep the contents of funnel as such for one hour. Transfer the contents of funnel in the moisture cup, dry and weigh. Calculate the result by difference method using the following formula.

In dry combustion technique, the combustion of soil sample (about 250 mg and mm sieved) is carried out at high temperature (about 1000 ºC) through feeding in an inert boat in the electric furnace. The CO₂ produced from the oxidation of carbon present in the soil sample at high temperature is carried towards non dispersive infrared detector (NDIR) by a carrier gas where it is quantified and total carbon content is determined.

Phosphorus is nearly exclusive found as phosphates in waters and wastewater and it categorised in to: a) orthophosphate, (b) organically bound phosphate and (c) condensed phosphates. Theses all three forms of phosphorus occur in solution, in the body of aquatic organisms through food chain. All the forms of phosphorous, whether dissolved or particulate are converted to inorganic forms (phosphate) after digestion of sample. Various methods use for the digestion of the sample including use of perchloric acid, H2SO4- K2SO4, H2SO4- HNO3 etc. The H2SO4- HNO3 digestion technique is discussed here.
Reagents
1. Phenolphthalein indicator
2. Conc. sulphuric acid (H2SO4)
3. Conc. nitric acid (HNO3)
4. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 1 N: Dissolve take 40 g of NaOH in 1000 ml of distilled water
Procedure
Digestion
1. Take 50 ml of sample in a Kjeldahl flask
2. Add 1 ml H2SO4 and 5 ml HNO3
3. Once the HNO completely removed, digest the sample on a hot plate until the volume approaches 5 ml. Then, keep heating the solution until it loses colour (you may also heat it in a beaker covered with a watch glass to prevent excessive evaporation).

The total plate count (TPC) is also called the Bacterial plate count (BPC), aerobic plate count, standard plate count (SPC), total viable count (TVC) or mesophilic count represents the number of colony forming units (CFU) per g (or per mL) of growing microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and mold on a nonspecific solid bacteriological growth medium under the specified conditions. Temperature, incubating time, medium type, and any other conditions used in the enumeration varies upon reference standards and laboratory objectives. Laboratories participating in the program choose their own routine conditions.
Principle
Usually direct count of too many bacteria in a sample is difficult but the bacterial colonies may be used as a measure of the bacterial cells in the known serially dilution and plated out on an agar surface in such a way that single isolated bacteria form visible isolated colonies. However, colony-forming unit might actually consist of a chain of bacteria rather than a single bacterium if the organism often develops various cell configurations, such chains. Furthermore, a portion of the bacteria might be grouped together. Thus, typically refer to the process of using the plate count technique as a means of estimating the number of colony forming units (CFUs) in that known solution. Then further this figure use to extrapolate the total amount of CFUs present in the original sample.

Objective: To estimate total protein in the plant sample by Folin-Lowry's method.

Background information:

Protein assay can be done to determine the level of protein in solution by the Folin-Lowry biochemical method. The concentration of protein leads to change in color of the solution and based on different color in different protein concentration solution the change in color may be digitized by colorimeter or spectrophotometer. This technique was developed by Oliver H. Lowry in the year 1940s. The tyrosine and trytophan amino acid residues in a protein sample produces purple or blue color in the absorption maxima at 660 nm by using Folin-Ciocalteau (having phosphate and sodium tungstate molybdate) chemical reagent. The color intensity of protein sample depends on the concentration of above aromatic amino acids (tyrosine and tryptophan), hence every sample will vary for color. For protein estimation the BSA (Bovine serum albumin) is widely used as standard protein molecule due to its cost effectiveness, purity and easy availability. This method of protein estimation is very sensitive and can detect up to 10 μg/ml. This is a relative method of protein estimation and may be interfere by salts, Tris buffer, nonionic & cationic detergents, EDTA, lipids and carbohydrates. For reproducible assay the incubation time, pH (9-10.5) is critical in this method (Lowry, et al. 1951).

Total Protein in Tissue Extract or Blood, Serum or Plasma
(Method of Folin-Ciocalteu, 1927 modified by Lowry et al., 1951)
Principle

A deep blue dye is formed when protein is treated with the phenol reagent of Folin ciocalteu. The extraordinary sensitivity of the method is due to the fact that two colour reactions are taking place simultaneously.
    a.    The biuret reaction of peptide bonds with copper in alkaline solution.
    b.    A reduction of phosphomolybdic acid and phosphotungstic acid by the aromatic amino acids, tyrosine and tryptophan, present in the protein.

Abstract
 
The definition of quality is described from a very simpler one “fitness for purpose or use” to a comprehensive “the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs”. The concept of total quality management in food industry is adopted recently and it is the “integrated organization approach in delighting customer (both external and internal) by meeting their expectations on a continuous basis through everyone involved with the organization working on continuous improvement in all products/processes along with proper problem solving methodology”. TQM is concerned with the integration of all the efforts in organization towards quality improvement, quality development and quality maintenance to meet full customer satisfaction at economic levels. TQM enhances the work culture and employee’s satisfaction through participation and involvement and consequently the image of the organization.

INTRODUCTION

Library and information centers are primarily service institutions which are expected to provide information to the entire satisfaction of user groups. However, in recent times, it is observed that there is conglomeration of several services in a pin-pointed manner in which the libraries are facing problem of confusion. Therefore, leading library and information centers have started adopting emerging management principles and practices in their functions and operations. Among all these new traits of management the concept of quality management appears to have a dynamic impact upon the improvement of organizational objective and functions. Since agriculture libraries are vibrant information organizations their quality of services needs to be improved in the modern technological era. The application of Total Quality Management (TQM) is one of the vital aspects of the management techniques that appears to be very much applicable and can bring about a great transformation in quality of library services. The present paper makes an analytic discussion on the applicability of TQM in Agriculture Libraries in India.

• Quality of fruit or any other commodity is combination of attributes, properties or characteristics like appearance, texture, flavor and nutritive value that determine their value to the consumer.

• Quality management Quality management is a method of ensuring the effectiveness of all the factors those implemented to improve and maintain the quality in acceptance form at consumer’s level.

11.2 Pre-harvest management of quality

11.2.1 Genotype and rootstock management

TQM is an integrative philosophy of management for continuously improving the quality of products and processes. It is used around the world.

TQM functions on the premise that the quality of products and processes is the responsibility of everyone who is involved with the creation or consumption of the products or services offered by an organization. In other words, TQM capitalizes on the involvement of management, workforce, suppliers, and even customers, in order to meet or exceed customer expectations. Considering the practices of TQM as discussed in six empirical studies, Cua, McKone, and Schroeder (2001) identified the nine common TQM practices as cross-functional product design, process management, supplier quality management, customer involvement, information and feedback, committed leadership, strategic planning, cross-functional training, and employee involvement.

TQM and Six Sigma

The Six Sigma management strategy originated in 1986 from Motorola’s drive towards reducing defects by minimizing variation in processes. The main difference between TQM and Six Sigma is the approach Six Sigma is a business management strategy originally developed by Motorola, USA in 1986. As of 2010, it is widely used in many sectors of industry, although its use is not without controversy.

Liberalized economies and evolving businessstrategies push variousindustries to achieve a competitive edge both in the domestic and international markets. Food industry especially, works on the bedrock of quality of products and services in order to attract and retain customers. In this new world of economic order, customers can select from wide range of products and services that are available in the market.

Objective: To isolate RNA from plants using TRIzol reagent and its quantification by spectrophotometer.

Background information

RNA (Ribonucleic acid) is a polymeric substance present in living cells and many viruses, consisting of a long single-stranded chain of phosphate and ribose units with the nitrogen bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil, which are bonded to the ribose sugar. RNA is necessary in all the steps of protein synthesis in all living cells and carries the genetic information for many viruses.

The isolation of RNA with high quality is a crucial step required to perform various molecular biology experiment. TRIzol Reagent is a ready-to-use reagent used for RNA isolation from cells and tissues (Chomczynski, 1993).TRIzol works by maintaining RNA integrity during tissue homogenization, while at the same time disrupting and breaking down cells and cell components. Addition of chloroform, after the centrifugation, separates the solution into aqueous and organic phases. Aqueous phase contains RNA.

After transferring the aqueous phase, RNA can be recovered by precipitation with isopropyl alcohol. DNA and proteins can be recovered by sequential separation after the removal of aqueous phase. Ethanol precipitation needs DNA from the interphase, and an additional precipitation with isopropyl alcohol requires proteins from the organic phase. Total RNA extracted by TRIzol Reagent is free from the contamination of protein and DNA The isolated RNA can be further used in Northern blot analysis, in vitro translation, poly (A) selection, RNase protection assay and molecular cloning.

Principle
The estimation of all solids, including dissolved, volatile, and suspended solids, is called total solids (TS). The residue that remains after the unfiltered sample evaporates between 103 and 105°C can be used to estimate total solids. Total dissolved solids (TDS) and Total suspended solids (TSS) are its two constituent components. After heating to 550°C, each fraction is separated once more into fixed solids and volatile suspended solids (VSS). The percentage of ash that remains is called fixed solids, while VSS is the organic proportion that was lost as CO2.
Apparatus
1. Ceramic or platinum evaporating dishes 100 mL volume.
2. Dessicator contain CuSO4.5H2O. Desiccator, provided with a desiccant containing a colour indicator of moisture (CuSO4.5H2O).

Procedure
1. Take a clean evaporating beaker or dish of required volume and dry it at hot air oven at 103 to 105oC for 1h, then cool and store it in a desiccator until needed. Immediately weigh before use. Note » the initial weight (Wi) in mg.
2. Take 250-300 ml or required volume of unfiltered well mixed sample in it (beaker or dish).
3. Place it in hot air oven at 103 to 105 oC for 2 h.
4. Cool it in a desiccator and take the final weight (Wf) in mg.
5. Replication the above process until a constant weight is achieved

Measurements of sugars in the fruit can indicate the stage of maturity. Total soluble solid (TSS) contents can give a reliable measure of the sugar and other water-soluble components in fruits, vegetables, and their products such as juice, squash, jam, preserve, candy, sauce, ketchup, etc., In climacteric fruits, carbohydrates accumulate during maturation in the form of starch, and as the fruit ripens the starch is broken down into sugar. In non-climacteric fruits, sugar tends to accumulate during maturation. The presence of sugars, acid, ascorbic acid, and other water-soluble components in the fruit, vegetable, and their products are measured as total soluble solids.
Principle
Soluble solids can be determined using a refractometer which measures the refractive index or a brix hydrometer which measures specific gravity. A Brix hydrometer is used to determine the percentage of brix in syrup while an Abbe refractometer gives both refractive index as well as degree brix. The Refractive index of the test solution is measured at 20°C using a refractometer and the soluble solid content is calculated by the use of tables correlating the refractive index with soluble solids.

Introduction

Banana plants are monocotyledonous, perennial and important crop in the tropical and sub tropical world regions. Traded plantain (Musa paradisiaca AAB) and other cooking bananas (Musa ABB) are almost entirely derived from AA-BB hybridization of M. acuminata (AA) and M. balbisiana (BB). Plantain and cooking bananas are very similar to unripe dessert bananas (M. cavendish AAA) in exterior appearance, although often larger. Main difference in the former is the starchy flesh rather than sweet and they are used unripe and require cooking. Dessert bananas are consumed usually as ripe fruits; whereas ripe and unripe plantain fruits are usually consumed boiled or fried. Large numbers of cultivars totalling about 70 are grown in different parts of the country. Some of the popular cultivars are Dwarf Cavendish, Robusta, Poovan, Nyali Poovan (Elakki Bale or Ney Poovan) Rasthali, Virupakshi, Monthan, Karpooravallli, Nendran or Rajeli. (www.pnbkrishi.com)

Commercial cultivation of Nendran has picked up rapidly in Tamil Nadu in the recent past. Nendran bunch has 5-6 hands weighing about 12-15 kg. Fruits have a distinct neck with thick green skin turning buff yellow on ripening. Fruits remain as starchy even on ripening. Keeping banana as a whole fruit for long time is not feasible due to its poor shelf life. The processed products from banana are also very limited at present and there is a good market potential for banana products such as banana figs, banana powder, banana jam, banana jelly and beverage (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry).

TVFA Estimation in Blood
(Method of Friedemann, 1938 modified by Mc Anally, 1944)

A method for the determination of volatile fatty acids in various biological materials has been described by Friedemann (1938) which is said to be applicable to blood, then the blood is added to dilute sulphuric acid, then sodium tungstate solution and solid magnesium sulphate are added and the whole is steam distilled.

Reagents
    1.    Saturated magnesium sulphate solution to which has been added 2.5 per cent by volume of concentrated sulphuric acid.

It may be Just like ATMs or modern plasma TV set which are developed as information kiosk and the information are made available to the users. A visitor can see the visuals and interact with kiosk to get the desired information. He can elicit the expert information by pressing keys or touching icons. Users can also follow the method of application of any technology through seeing of clippings at touch screen kiosk. In the touch screen kiosks, information is made accessible in the form of images, voice, video, graphics and texts. A large number of touch screen kiosks have been established by Indian railway, government offices, Banks and private companies where by touch of finger users can get access to various services (G2C and B2C) offered by the organization or company.

Introduction

India has a big challenge in fruit production in the current backdrop of decreasing per capita land holding and static fruit productivity. In recent years, China has surpassed and secured top position in the fruit production in the world accounting for 4,44,651 mt production followed by India and Brazil.  Now Chinese share in the fruit production is around 13 per cent while India contributes 10.2 per cent, Brazil 8 per cent and USA 6 per cent of total fruit production.

India is bestowed with a wide variety of agro-climatic conditions and enjoys an enviable position in the horticultural map of the world. Almost all types of fruit crops (tropical, sub-tropical and temperate) are grown in one or other part in the country.  The major tropical and sub-tropical fruits grown in India include mango, banana, papaya, orange, mosambi, guava, grape, pineapple, coconut, sapota, ber, pomegranate, litchi, aonla, bael, jackfruit etc.  Cashew nut cultivation has a big potential and its production, productivity and export has increased significantly in recent decades. Indian grape has recorded highest productivity per unit area in the world. The productivity of fruit per unit area in India has increased nearly from 10 t/ha to 12 t/ha in almost one decade.  However, the average productivity in most of the fruit crops is far below than satisfactory except grape and banana in few states.  It is paradox to record that India’s contribution in the overseas market is almost (0.11 per cent) negligible (Chadha, 2000). However, other countries like Mexico, Philippines and Venezuela, which produce far less, export 4 per cent of their total production.

Presently the farming situation urges need to develop farming techniques, which are sustainable from environmental, production, and socio-economic points of view. Modern agricultural production throughout the world does not appear to be sustainable in the long run. Sustainable agricultural development “is the management and conservation of the natural resource base and the orientation of technological and institutional change in such a manner to assure the attainment and continued satisfaction of human needs for the present and future generations”. Such sustainable development in the agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors, conserves land, water, plant and animal genetic resources, is environmentally non-degrading, technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable. Such concerns imparted a way to organic farming. It is the need of the day to understand the prospects and problems of organic farming to launch a successful and flawless organic production programme in the farm of environment.

Organic farming

It is the most widely recognized alternative farming system to chemical agriculture evolved during 1940’s largely in response to the publication of J.I Rodale in the U.S., Lady Eve Balfour in England and Sir Albert Howard in India. In 1980, USDA released a landmark report on organic farming. The report defined organic farming as follows;

“Organic farming is a production system, which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetically compounded fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, and livestock feed additives. To the maximum extent feasible, organic farming systems rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, green manures, off-farm organic wastes, mechanical cultivation, mineral bearing rocks, and aspects of biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and tilth to supply plant nutrients, and to control insects, weeds, and other pests”.

In 1920, although electric vehicles were not used on the American farms about 5,000 electric industrial trucks were produced by 12 American manufacturers, while estimates of the total fleet ranged from 6,000 to 15,000, most of them built during the war. Most used an exchange charging system. Among the manufacturers seen in and around cities and towns were the Commercial Truck Company, the Lansden Company, the Walker Vehicle Company (now owned by Commonwealth Edison), the Ward Motor Vehicle Company, the Steinmetz Electric Motor Corporation, Walter Motor Truck Company, and the Baker R L Corporation.One step away from agriculture, Charles A. Ward of New York City, was head of his family’s baking company, made up of the Mackey Company, the Ward Corby Company, the Ward Bread Companyand the Ohio Baking Company of Cleveland. In 1911, Ward had decided to replace his horse-drawn delivery vehicles with electric trucks, thus doing away with the unsanitary stable hitherto part of or adjacent to bakery.¹

Alongside this, the challenge of using stationary electric agricultural machines continued to be met. Two innovations which entered into dairy farming were the milk cream electric centrifugal separator and the surge milker. The Babson brothers (Henry, Fred and Gus) of Chicago were friends of and dealers for electrical battery inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Edison, and importers of Belgian-made Méllote separators. In 1916, the Babsonsproduced their own Pine Tree milking machine. While the overall design was similar to others, the electrically powered Pine Tree Pulsator outperformed any other pulsator made. These machines were powered by a 32-volt Delco system with 12 batteries near the barn. Pine Tree Pulsators were simple enough that the farmer could maintain them himself. The Pine Tree Pulsator was patented in 1921. The problem with this unit was that it was difficult to keep clean.

Livestock and livelihoods are intimately linked in our country.  Mixed farming involving crop-livestock as well as sometimes fish integration has been both a way of life and a means to sustainable livelihoods.  Also, the ownership of the livestock is more egalitarian than that of land.  That is why in our ancient culture, livestock has been given a pride of place in the area of spiritual veneration and natural resources conservation.  Maharashtra is rich in its livestock resources and has also a long coastline with a wide range of living aquatic resources.

The crop-livestock integrated farming system provides an opportunity for promoting organic farming and restoration of soil health, and thereby of an ever-green revolution leading to an enhancement of productivity in perpetuity without associated ecological harm.  It also strengthens household nutrition security.  The country as a whole has over 500 million farm animals.  However, grazing land has been reduced to less than 5 per cent of the arable land area.  Village common property resources, which used to provide fodder and shelter to farm animals, have been overexploited.  Consequently, our farm animal productivity is very low.

Environmental contaminants are defined as substances introduced into the environment, either naturally or anthropogenically, that pose potentialharm to living organisms and ecosystems (Masindi and Muedi, 2018).These contaminants include a diverse range of pollutants, such as chemicalagents, biological contaminants and physical pollutants (Ahmed et al.,2021). Understanding these contaminants and their toxicity is of paramountimportance, given their profound implications on human health, biodiversityand the overall functioning of ecosystems (Samuel et al., 2023).Environmental contaminations are pervasive in nature and originated fromdiverse sources. Industrial activities are major contributors, releasing heavymetals, organic solvents, and particulate matter into air, water and soil(Williams, 2019). Similarly, agricultural practices contribute to contaminationthrough excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, which often runoff intoaquatic systems, causing eutrophication and harming aquatic life (Zahoor and
Mushtaq, 2023). Urbanization and improper waste management have alsointensified the problem with plastics and emerging contaminants finding theirway into ecosystems (Singh et al., 2022). Even natural events like volcaniceruptions and forest fires contribute to environmental contamination, thoughtheir impacts are often localized and episodic compared to the persistent andwidespread pollution caused by human activities (Ernst, 2012).The study of environmental contaminants and their toxic effects is of vitalimportance for several reasons in today’s context of escalating global pollution(Hussain and Reza, 2023). First, it provides insights into the health risks posedto humans and wildlife (Pereira et al., 2015). Many contaminants, such as lead,mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are known to have chronic andacute toxic effects on biological systems, affecting neurological, reproductivand immune functions (Priyadarshanee et al., 2022). These substances interactwith biological systems in complex ways, often leading to adverse outcomessuch as bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, endocrine disruption and ecologicalimbalances (Satkar et al., 2024). Heavy metals like lead and mercury are
known to accumulate in organisms and disrupt critical biological functions,while synthetic chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) can interfere with hormonalsystems, resulting in reproductive and developmental issues (Pan et al., 2024).Such impacts underscore the need to understand how these substances interactwith living organisms, identify their exposure thresholds and mechanisms oftoxicity to formulate strategies for risk assessment and mitigation (Kumar andSingh, 2023).

Ruminants, including cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats are highly efficient at digesting fibrous plant materials, thanks to their specialized stomach anatomy comprising the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. However, these animals are also susceptible to the accumulation of toxic minerals in the rumen or rumino-reticulum, which can significantly affect their health, productivity, and survival. This chapter delves into toxic minerals, their sources, mechanisms of toxicity, clinical manifestations, and potential mitigation strategies.
The rumen and reticulum, as integral parts of a ruminant’s digestive system, are central to the efficient fermentation and digestion of fibrous feeds. However, these chambers are also vulnerable to toxic minerals from environmental, dietary, and water sources. Toxic minerals can disrupt the rumen ecosystem, impair digestion, and negatively impact animal health. The rumen and reticulum serve as fermentation chambers, hosting billions of microbes that break down complex carbohydrates, synthesize volatile fattyacids (VFAs), and produce microbial proteins essential for ruminant health. 
However, toxic minerals can interfere with this delicate balance, leading to reduced microbial efficiency, impaired digestion, and systemic toxicity.  Toxic minerals are naturally occurring or anthropogenically introducedelements that become harmful when consumed in excessive quantities. Understanding the Toxicity of Macrolide Endectocides

Introduction

Macrolide endectocides are a class of compounds widely used in veterinary medicine to combat internal and external parasites in livestock and companion animals. While these medications have proven to be effective in controlling parasites, there are concerns regarding their potential toxicity and adverse effects on animals and the environment.

Whar are Macrolide Endectocides

Macrolide endectocides belong to a group of compounds derived from naturally occurring macrolide antibiotics, such as avermectins and milbemycins. These compounds have broad-spectrum activity against various parasites, including nematodes, arthropods, and ectoparasites like ticks and mites. Some commonly used macrolide endectocides include ivermectin, doramectin, moxidectin, and eprinomectin.

Toxicity Concerns

While macrolide endectocides are generally safe and effective when used according to label instructions, there are instances where toxicity can occur. Factors influencing toxicity include:

Paracelsus recognized more than 400 years ago that it is “the dose that makes the poison.”Deliberate or inadvertent over dosages may cause illness, and a misplaced decimal in water or feed medication concentrations frequently results in toxicity. A general feature of modern complex poultry rations, feed mill equipment, and feed delivery to poultry farms is that any component included in a ration may at some time be mistakenly included at a higher than desired rate. This may occur through human or mechanical error. For example, sulfaquinoxaline poisoning occurs in meat-type chickens, even at recommended doses, because of high water intake in warm buildings, particularly in hot weather, or because of poor feed mixing.

Poisonous substances are widely distributed in nature. Poisoning occurs more frequently in free-range and backyard flocks and in village poultry where birds forage in neighboring gardens and fields or receive household waste and weeds cut from roadsides and fields. Some of these poisonings are malicious. Contaminated litter on the floor and in nest boxes is an added source of toxins in chickens not raised on wire.

Introduction

Fish is the cleanest animal, gets bath 24 hrs a day provided water is clean without any toxic material. Perhaps this was the scenario world over 5 decades ago. However, in the last few decades due to industrialisation, modernisation of agriculture and animal husbandry, human health care industry and city developments all have contributed to toxic material to water endangering the fish and the consumer, leave alone clean environment. In recent years, even intensive aquaculture also add several chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics contributing to pollution. Natural water bodies such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, scoastal/marine waters are ultimate receivers of pollutants which also serve as the source of water for aquaculture. Although pollution control by treatment measures and awareness have improved over the years still there is a long way to achieve the clean water. Effect of toxins in aquaculture has multiple angles, differing from that of toxins on land animal. Fish depends heavily on water for respiration, physiology, reproduction, food and feeding and its very sustenance- as a supporting medium.

Aquaculture is expanding world over growing at 6-8% gradually involving more areas and species contributing a major share to total fish production with gradual decline in capture fisheries from the natural water bodies. Invariably, most of the natural water bodies are polluted with one pollutant or the other in the country. In addition, several pollutants are added to the system by various aquacultural practices. Although large quantity of information is available on aquatic toxicology, toxicology in aquaculture from health point view of fish and the consumer is meager and not focused. Against this background, it is very important to study, understand various toxicants, their mode of action, accumulation and effect on fish and the consumer. Toxicology in aquaculture is incomplete unless it includes or addresses safety of the consumers. Further, poisoning of fish in farms and wild deliberately or otherwise needs forensic studies/approach to address the issues.

The role of toxicology in the evaluation of new agrochemicals

The widespread use of agrochemicals for crop protection may expose humans, animals, and the environment to toxic chemicals. Humans may be exposed during manufacture or application, and to a lesser extent as consumers of food products containing trace amounts of residues.

Strategies of toxicity testing

No-Observable-Adverse- Effect-Level (NOAEL)

A level in which the total diet that causes no adverse effect in treated animals when compared to untreated animals maintained under identical conditions. This NOAEL is expressed on a mg/kg of body weight/day basis. Chronic and sub chronic studies are need to be carried out in different species to determine NOAEL values.

It depends on how much of the substance an organism is exposed to, but all chemicals are toxic to some degree. Toxicology studies try to figure out the exact types and amounts of harmful effects, as well as the lowest doses that won’t have any negative effects (called the “No Observed Adverse Effect Level” or NOAEL). Most data come from studies with lab animals and cells that have been grown in a lab. Using these numbers and extrapolation or uncertainty factors, it is possible to figure out an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI). This is the maximum amount of a substance that a person can take in every day without putting themselves at a very high risk of getting sick. These numbers will be compared to how people might be exposed to a compound in the environment, including through food. This will show if the use of an agrochemical is potentially allowed.

Livestock poisoning by plants is often a result of management errors, range conditions, or the type of animal, rather than just the presence of poisonous plants. Forage availability can be influenced by drought, overgrazing and snow storms, or altered grazing patterns. Animals can become overly hungry during transportation or other management activities that deprive them of food and water for extended periods of time, thus making them more likely to graze toxic plants. Grazing during the wrong season may compromise an animal's ability to select adequate and non-toxic forages (James, 1994).

The toxicity of plants varies with environmental factors such as site, temperature, precipitation, and light, time of day and stage of growth. For example, mature oak leaves are less toxic than young leaves. Cyanogenic plants such as arrow grass are more toxic following a frost or drought condition. Nitrates can be higher in plants following heavy nitrogen fertilisation or during a drought. Certain animal factors must also be considered in livestock poisoning by plants. For example, goats are considered to be comparatively resistant to lantana poisoning than cattle. A hungry animal is more susceptible to poisoning than a full one. A full rumen slows consumption and also dilutes the toxin. Though the animals are exposed to a large number of toxic plants when they are left for grazing, five will be discussed in detail in this chapter. These include lantana, ageratum, eupatorium, oak and ferns (James, 1994).

Cyanide poisoning

Cyanide poisoning occurs in animals due to sorghum and/or other chemicals and characterized by ataxia, incoordination, cystitis, paralysis, and death.

1. INTRODUCTION

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism’s cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth. A food contains some non-nutrients, some of which may even have a detrimental influence on the consumers, while some may be inert and have no effect. Nature has endowed many plants with the capacity to synthesize a wide variety of chemical substances that are known to exert a deleterious effect when ingested by animals and are called as antimetabolites. These substances are also referred to as antinutritional factors when they are present in food/feedstuffs and influence a metabolic pathway when introduced into and/or eaten by an organism.

There is a wide distribution of biologically-active constituents throughout the plant kingdom, particularly in plants, used as animal feed stuff and as human food. The knowledge that these compounds elicit both toxic and advantageous biological responses has given rise to several investigations in recent times as to their possible physiological implications in various biological systems. It is well known that plants generally, contain antinutrients acquired from fertilizer and pesticides and several naturally-occurring chemicals. Some of these chemicals are known as ‘‘secondary metabolites’’ and they have been shown to be highly biologically active. They include saponins, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, trypsin (protease) inhibitors, oxalates, phytates, haemagluttinins (lectins), cyanogenic glycosides, cardiac glycosides, coumarins and gossypol and the list is inexhaustible. Some of these plant chemicals have been shown to be deleterious to health or evidently dis-advantageous to human and animal health, if consumed in appropriate amounts. Most of these secondary metabolites elicit very harmful biological responses, while others are widely applied in nutrition and as pharmacologically-active agents. The pharmacological and other beneficial effects of these antinutritional factors in plants have been reviewed here.

Certain constituents associated with plants are toxic. When such items are consumed by men and animals, they become hazardous. Mold growth on food items may be the cause of toxicity. Some of them are called mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are the best examples of such a group of compounds. Sometimes processing also produces some toxins. Fumigants, smoke and some metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic etc.) used for such purposes are some such toxic constituents. Pesticides used in protecting the crops and grains during storage remain on the items and the residues are hazardous.

Chickens are considered one of the most important hosts in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection because they are an efficient source of infection for cats that excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts and because humans may become infected with this parasite after eating undercooked infected chicken meat.

Poultry meat is an important part of cuisine, consumed widely all over the world; therefore, consumption of uncooked or not properly cooked poultry meat may pose a risk factor for T. gondii infection in humans or animals.

Practically every aspect of the chemistry of heavy metals in soil is related to the formation of complexes with organic matter. While monovalent cations (Na+, K+, etc.) are held mainly by simple cation exchange through the formation of salts with COOH groups (RCOONa, RCOOK), multivalent cations (Cu²+, Zn²+, Mn²+, etc.) form coordinate linkages with organic molecules.

The metals present in the solution phase as charged species and as soluble metal-organic complexes (MChe), are shown to be influenced by the activities of higher plants and microbes, both of which serve as sources of water-soluble ligands for complex formation; some metals are held in insoluble organic complexes and are non-leachable and relatively unavailable to plants.
