Weather has profound influence on agriculture, which demands that the changes in weather conditions are regularly monitored. In qualitative terms, weather conditions are often expressed on the basis of final condition created by interaction of different components. For example, too hot, too cold, sunny or cloudy, humid, dry weather conditions refer to specific atmospheric conditions but are least useful in analyzing the impact of weather on agriculture.
 
The measurements taken at a weather station can include any number of atmospheric observables. The WMO has laid down specifications, procedures and practices in respect of various meteorological matters such as instruments, observations, telecommunications, processing of data, analysis etc.

Abstract

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), one of the oldest oil seed crops of the world is mostly grown by small and marginal farmers of arid and semi-arid regions of India. The productivity of sesame in major sesame growing states ranges from74 kg ha^-1 in Rajasthan to 291 kg ha^-1 in Gujarat, and is far below from national average (368 kg ha^-1). Low yield in farmer’s fields often results because of low level of inputs and frequent soil moisture deficit. Under these circumstances, problems of low yield in resource poor farmer’s field remain a major challenge. The present study aimed at identifying the high yielding sesame cultivars and the potential breeding resources for low input agriculture in arid ecosystems.

Bougainvillea can grow in almost all kinds of edaphic conditions except in the water lodged regions. They grow well in the degraded soils (black cotton soils, red soils, crevices of rocks, to some extent in sandy soils, water stress conditions, high and low pH soils). Open sunny location is most suitable for best performance. Full sunshine helps for producing brilliant colours in masses. But young plants must be protected from heat. Kuzmina-Medova (1986) estimated that Bougainvillea require more than 2000 lux light for satisfactory growth. Different floricultural crops are propagated/multiplied by different means like sexual propagation (by seeds), asexual propagation (cuttings, layering, grafting, budding) and micropropagation. Bougainvillea is mostly propagated by vegetative propagation i.e. hard wood cuttings but it can also be propagated by different conventional propagation methods (Watson and Criley 1973, Iredell 1994, Srinivas 1995, Sindhu and Dagar 2015, Rajan et al., 1998, Tavares et al., 1998, Criley 1997, Pertuit 1999, Gilman 1999, Hackett et al., 1972, Schoellhorn and Alvarez 2002, Hamilton and Midcap 2003).

Having meticulously explored the foundations of crop-weather interactions, the development and validation of crop growth models, the wisdom embedded in Indigenous Technical Knowledge, and the systematic organization of Crop Weather Calendars, we now arrive at the culmination of this knowledge synthesis: the Agroadvisory Based on Weather Forecast. This chapter delves into the critical process of transforming raw meteorological data and scientific understanding into actionable, timely, and location-specific advice for the farming community. An agroadvisory, at its core, is a targeted recommendation provided to farmers, guiding them on various agricultural operations by integrating current weather conditions, short- to medium-range weather forecasts, and the specific needs of their crops at different growth stages. It represents the final, practical output of complex agro-meteorological research and forecasting efforts, designed to empower farmers to make adaptive decisions that can significantly impact their yield, resource efficiency, and resilience against climatic shocks. In the upcoming sections, we will comprehensively examine the multi-faceted nature of weather-based agroadvisories. Our exploration will detail:
• The Conceptual Framework: Understanding the underlying principles and objectives of these advisories, emphasizing their shift from reactive responses to proactive planning.
• Essential Components of an Agroadvisory: Breaking down the key pieces of information typically included, such as weather forecasts (temperature, rainfall, wind, humidity), crop-specific phenological stages, potential risks (pests, diseases, extreme weather), and precise recommendations for farm operations (sowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, harvesting).

ABSTRACT

Chilli is the universal spice of Kerala, known for its pungency, flavour and colour of fruits. Of the five domesticated species of Capsicum, C. annuum is the most extensively cultivated one. Bell pepper (C. annuum L.) is mainly used as a vegetable, because of its low pungency and good flavour. It is used as raw in salads, and also in cooked form. Application of biotechnological tools in this crop for improving the quality, shelf life and tolerance of the crop to stress conditions has been limited. This is mainly due to lack of an efficient regeneration system. We reported a viable protocol for the regeneration of whole plant from the hypocotyl earlier. We also succeeded in developing a protocol for genetic transformation of bell pepper using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The strain EHA 105 containing gus intron and npt II was used for co-cultivation. The dilution of bacterial culture and time of infection were standardised. This was followed by killing the bacterial cells using cefotaxim @ 250ppm. Transformants were selected on MS medium supplemented with kanamycin. Staining of the regenerants with X-gluc revealed presence of blue spots, confirming transformation. This protocol could be exploited for improving the commercial traits of bell pepper by incorporating desirable genes through Agrobacterium mediated transformation.

ABSTRACT

Astudy was undertaken with the main objective to standardise the Agrobacterium mediated genetic transformation technique in Dendrobium Sonia 17. Protocorms and protocorm like bodies (PLBs) of Dendrobium orchid were transformed by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains LBA4404 and EHA105 harbouring the plasmids pCAMBIA2301, pCAMBIA1301 and PBI121. The PLBs were generated in vitro by culturing the shoot apices in half strength MS medium. The protocorms were obtained by culturing the seeds in vitro. The sensitivity of orchid tissues to various antibiotics viz., ampicilin, rifampicin, cefotaxime, carbenicillin, kanamycin and hygromycin was evaluated to use the antibiotics as selection agents. The sensitivity was studied in detail by scoring the tissues, based on the morphological changes as those remaining fully green, partially discoloured, bleached, completely turning brown and dead. The various requirements for transformation viz., the type and size of explant, infection time, wounding, co-cultivation and incubation period, concentration of acetosyringone required, elimination of bacteria, and the selection of transformants were optimised to establish a successful transformation system. The pre- cultured explants were mixed thoroughly by gentle swirling with the bacterial cells obtained by centrifuging the bacterial suspension, and also with the bacterial suspension diluted to 1/5 with fresh medium. Then the explants were cocultivated with the bacteria for 2 days at 28°C. The transformation was performed through two consecutive stages of cultivation, the first stage on half strength MS medium containing cefotaxime and subsequent stage on selection medium containing kanamycin. Initially recovered PLBs following co-cultivation, were allowed for further selection with kanamycin. New PLBs and leaves were formed from the transformed PLBs when they were regenerated under kanamycin selection. Successful transformants were obtained with a maximum transformation efficiency of 3.0 per cent with the addition of acetosyringone 100 mM. Out of the kanamycin resistant PLBs 69.23 per cent were GUS positives. The newly formed PLBs and leaves when subjected to histochemical GUS assay indicated successful transformation and it was detected as distinct blue spots on the PLBs after 24’ hours. The PLBs which were not co-cultivated with Agrobacterium were green in colour. The transformation were further confirmed by PCR analysis.

ABSTRACT

Solanum trilobatum Linn. (Solanaceae) was investigated for the induction of tumor using a soil borne bacterium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Explants like stem segments and nodes were infected with bacterium. Tumors were induced from nodal explants within 10 days of infection. These explants were then transferred to MS basal medium and their growth was observed to be independent of exogenous supply of phytohormones. The growth rate of transformed callus was 10-fold as compared to control. They are used as a promising source of secondary metabolites of medicinal significance.

ABSTRACT

Rapid optimization and improvement of papaya transformation necessacitates, a quick, non-destructive marker, which permits early detection of transformed tissue. We assessed the ability of a modified version of the green fluorescent protein gene (GFP) to act as the reporter. Transgenic papaya (Carica papaya L.) plants were developed using immature zygotic embryo as the expl ants and Agrobacterium tumefaciens as the transformation inducer. GFP gene (pBIN35Smgfp-ER) under the control of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus (CaMV) 35S promoter was used as the reporter gene. Media P (modified MS basal medium with B vitamins supplemented with picloram 1 mg/l) and BN (modified MS basal medium with B vitamins supplemented with BAP: NAA 1:0.1 mg/l) supplemented with kanamycin (50 mg/l) were used for regeneration of transgenic papaya under selection pressure. GFP gene expression was detected at the juvenile stages viz. at early stages of somatic embryogenesis. 35S promoter driven GFP gene activity was also detected in the epidermis and the vascular tissues of the leaf petiole. Visualization under microscope and subsequent DNA analysis (Southern hybridization) showed that kanamycin resistant plants carried and expressed the GFP transgene. Expression of the GFP as green fluorescence served as a useful non-destructive indicator of successful transformation.

Abstract

Agrobiodiversity is the back bone playing a significant role in food security and sustainable livelihoods. Agricultural systems of India are home to a great diversity of plant species and genetic varieties, but unfortunately these traditional farming systems are facing the danger of extinction today. The present study was conducted from three tribal mandals namely Araku, Paderu and Ananthagiri in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh as it is noted as a hub of biodiversity in North coastal zone of Andhra Pradesh. Data was collected by direct interview method and the traditional storage practices for the conservation of agrobiodiversity (landraces) were described.

Agrobiodiversity is a key resource for humanity. All of the food retirements humanity depends on are fulfilled by agrobiodiversity. Not only this, fodder, fiber, firewood, and many other basic needs of humankind are also met by agrobiodiversity. Human’s dependence on agriculture - not only for survival and sustenance but also for socioeconomic progress, maintenance and celebration of cultural ethos, physical, intellectual, emotional, ethical, and aesthetic development, and psychological contentment and happiness - is inevitable.

Agrobiodiversity is critical for food security for the entire humanity as well as for the food sovereignty of a country. If we are to usher in a sustainable future - that is, a future to be witnessed by healthy, vibrant, and happy humanity (Singh 2019) - there is no choice other than protecting, conserving, and augmenting agrobiodiversity.

Introduction

The agrochemical sector has been critical in enhancing agricultural productivity and output. Let’s look at the challenges that the agrochemical sector is facing and how they might be solved to ensure a brighter future.

Opportunities

1. Increase in irrigated area: Every year, around 0.5 million hectares of irrigated land are added as a result of the government’s ongoing efforts to make water available for irrigation. This is anticipated to boost production and increase farmer income. As a result, agrochemical consumption is expected to rise.

2. Changing food and consumption trends: Changes in consumption patterns and demand for a wide range of fruits and vegetables may drive farmers to employ more modern agricultural practises in order to fetch a premium for such produce. This segment is predicted to result in a 2% to 3% increase in agrochemical consumption.

Introduction

Our agrarian economy is undergoing amazing changes as a result of the technological and digital revolutions, increased urbanisation, the unprecedented rise in middle income groups, rapidly changing consumer patterns and tastes, and most importantly, as a result of climate change and environmental degradation. As a result of these changes, agriculture now faces both new challenges and opportunities to improve in terms of productivity, economic reward, social justice and inclusivity, and ecological sustainability.

The counterfeiting problem has a significant influence on the agrochemical sector. Over the past few years, spurious agrochemical products have gained market dominance on a global scale.

It is heartening to see that the Government of India has included the Agrochemicals Industry in the current list of 12 Champion Industries, owing to significant manufacturing for both domestic and foreign markets. Some areas require immediate attention in order to continue growing.

1. Being Independent of China: The Make in India programme should be enforced for many essential agrochemical intermediates, thus becoming China independent.Significant efforts should be made to make this a reality. A well planned, concentrated approach must be developed between the business sec tor and the GOI. Success should be seen within the following two to three years.It is important to emphasise that we can export domestically manufac tured agrochemical intermediates, thereby reducing certain countries’ reliance on China.The agrochemical business would benefit greatly from a level play ing field free of burdensome rules and restrictions, as many of them appear unreasonable.

Introduction

An agrochemical is a chemical product used in industrial agriculture. In most of the cases, agrochemicals refer to pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, algaecides, rodenticides, molluscicides and nematicides), fertilizers, soil conditioners, liming and acidifying agents and plant growth regulators that provide benefits and manage agricultural ecosystem. Agrochemicals were introduced to enhance crop yields and minimized the crop losses due to pests and categories as fertilizers and pesticides. In the past sixty years with the wake of the green revolution (1960s), use of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium based inorganic fertilizers and pesticides has greatly increased food production by improving efficient and economical crop production in order to fulfil the food needs of the rapidly expanding world population (Pal et al?, 2006).

Crop yield is influenced by genetical (heredity), external (environmental) and management factors that occur during the crop growing period. The external environment is the climate which regulates and determines the growth and development and final output of crop plants. But, man has no control over weather, hence it is dominance over the success or failure of agricultural enterprises. According to the World Meteorological Organization, the weather induced variability in crop yield is as high as 50 per cent. Therefore, weather should be taken as one of the inputs in agricultural planning.

India’s diverse climate and geography provide a favorable environment for growing a wide range of fruit-type vegetables, including eggplant, tomato, okra, and chillies. These crops are not only essential for food security but also contribute significantly to the country’s agricultural economy. To optimize the production and productivity of these crops, it is crucial to understand their agroclimatic requirements.
Fruit-type vegetables have specific temperature requirements for growth and development. For instance, eggplant and okra require warm temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F) for optimal growth, while tomatoes prefer a slightly cooler temperature range of 15-25°C (59-77°F). Chilli peppers, on the other hand, thrive in temperatures between 20-35°C (68-95°F). Adequate moisture is also essential for the growth and development of fruit-type vegetables. Eggplant, okra, and chilli peppers require consistent moisture, especially during the fruiting stage, while tomatoes require a slightly drier soil condition. The ideal annual rainfall for these crops ranges from 600-1,200 mm, with supplemental irrigation provided during periods of drought.
Weather conditions, such as sunlight, wind, and frost, also play a crucial role in the growth and development of fruit-type vegetables. Most fruit-type vegetables require full sun to produce well, while excessive wind can damage plants and reduce yields. Frost, on the other hand, can be detrimental to these crops, and frost-free periods are essential for optimal growth. India‘s diverse
climate and geography result in regional variations in agroclimatic conditions. For instance, the Indo-Gangetic Plains, which cover parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, have a subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. In contrast, the Deccan Plateau, which covers parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana, has a tropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. Understanding these regional variations is essential for optimizing the production and productivity of fruit-type vegetables. The agroclimatic conditions suitable for growing different fruit type vegetables are given in this chapter.

INTRODUCTION

India is endowed with a vast and rich diversity of natural resources particularly soil, water, climate and agro-biodiversity. To realize the optimum potential of the agricultural production system on a sustainable basis, there is a need to bestow a paramount importance in the arena of efficient management of natural resources. India with a geographical area of 329 M ha presently supports 17% of the world’s population on merely 2. 5% of world’s land area and 4% of world’s freshwater resources. India’s economy is predominantly agrarian in nature with about 72. 2% of its 1028 million population (census 2001) living in villages and about 54. 4% people (cultivators) directly depending on agriculture.

Climate, in general, is the totality of weather during a longer period and over wider area. Agro climate can be defined as the conditions and effects of varying weather parameters like solar radiation, rainfall etc., on crop growth and production.

Climatic classification is a method of arranging various data of climatic parameters to demarcate a country or region into homogenous zones i.e., places having similar conditions.

Allium vegetables, which include onions, garlic, and shallots, are a fundamental part of Indian cuisine and play a vital role in the country’s agricultural sector (Fig. 7.1). Here’s an overview of their importance, area, and production in India:
• India is the second-largest producer of onions in the world, accounting for over 20% of global production. Onions are grown across various states, with Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka being the top producers. The country produces over 19 million tons of onions annually, with a significant portion being consumed domestically.
• Garlic is another essential Allium crop in India, with the country producing around 1.4 million tons annually. The major garlic-producing states in India are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
• Shallots are also grown in India, particularly in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. The country produces around 0.7 million tons of shallots annually.
• The importance of Allium vegetables in India extends beyond their culinary uses. They are a significant source of income for millions of farmers across the country. The Allium crop industry also provides employment opportunities in rural areas, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Brassica is a genus of plants belonging to the mustard family (Brassicaceae) and includes some of the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetables globally. The Brassica group encompasses a diverse range of cool-season crops, including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and mustard, among others (Fig. 8.1). These vegetables are not only rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants but also play a vital role in human health, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
• India is one of the largest producers of Brassica vegetables, with a  significant portion of the crop being cultivated in the Indo-Gangetic plains. According to the Indian Horticultural Database, Brassica vegetables are grown on approximately 2.5 million hectares of land, with a total production of over 30 million metric tons annually. The major Brassica-producing states in India include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
• The importance of Brassica vegetables extends beyond their nutritional value and economic significance. They are also an integral part of Indian cuisine and culture, with various regional and traditional recipes featuring these vegetables as main ingredients. Furthermore, Brassica crops are a vital component of crop rotation and intercropping systems, helping to maintain soil health, reduce pests and diseases, and promote biodiversity.

Agroclimatology plays a vital role in the cultivation and production of creeper vegetables in India. Creeper vegetables, such as cucumber, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd, are an essential part of Indian cuisine and are grown extensively throughout the country. With its diverse climate and geographical conditions, India offers a suitable environment for the growth of a wide range of creeper
vegetables.
In terms of area and production, creeper vegetables account for a significant share of the total vegetable production in India. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, the area under creeper vegetable cultivation has been increasing steadily over the years, with a corresponding rise in production. This trend is attributed to the growing
demand for these vegetables, both domestically and internationally.
Creeper vegetables are not only an important source of nutrition but also contribute significantly to the country’s economy. They are a vital source of income for many small and marginal farmers, who cultivate these crops on a large scale. Moreover, the export of creeper vegetables earns significant foreign exchange for the country.
The importance of creeper vegetables in India can be gauged from the fact that they are an integral part of various traditional and cultural festivals. For instance, bitter gourd is considered a auspicious vegetable in many Indian communities and is often prepared during special occasions.

Beans play a vital role in India’s agricultural sector and food security. They are an essential source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients, making them a crucial component of the Indian diet. Beans are also a significant source of income for many farmers in India, particularly small and marginal farmers. The country’s bean production also contributes significantly to the national
economy, with India being one of the largest producers of beans in the world. In addition to their nutritional and economic importance, beans also play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility and promoting sustainable agriculture practices in India. Beans are legumes, which mean they have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers and promoting
soil health. India is a significant producer of various types of beans, which are widely used as vegetables in the country. These beans are not only a good source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients but also play a crucial role in the country’s agricultural sector.
Overall, beans are a vital crop in India, and their production and consumption play a significant role in the country’s food security, agricultural sector, and national economy.
They are grown in various parts of the country, with major production areas including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. According to the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the country produced over 1.4 million metric tons of kidney beans in 2020-21. Kidney beans are an essential ingredient in many popular Indian dishes, such as rajma masala, and are also used in salads, soups, and stews.

Leafy greens, comprising a diverse array of crops such as spinach, lettuce, kale, collard greens, and mustard greens, among others, are a vital component of global vegetable production. With their high nutritional value, versatility in culinary uses, and ease of cultivation, leafy greens (Fig. 6.1) have become an integral part of diets worldwide.
• In India, leafy greens are grown across various agroclimatic zones, with major producing states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The estimated area under leafy greens cultivation in India ranges from 0.7 to 0.8 million hectares, accounting for a significant share of the country’s total vegetable production. The annual production of leafy greens in India stands at approximately 5-6 million tonnes, with a considerable portion being consumed domestically.
• Beyond their culinary and nutritional significance, leafy greens also hold substantial economic importance, particularly for small and marginal farmers who constitute the backbone of India’s agricultural sector. The cultivation of leafy greens provides these farmers with a vital source of income, enabling them to support their livelihoods and contribute to local economic development.
 

Root-type vegetables are a diverse group of underground plant structures that are edible and serve as a vital source of nutrition for humans. These vegetables can be further categorized into two main types: true roots, such as carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes, which are modified taproots that store food; and tuberous roots, such as Potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, which are modified
stems that store food. A root is a compact, often enlarged storage organ with hairy stems that develops from root tissue. So a tuber is a root crop, but a plant can be a root and not a tuber. Carrots and cassava are root vegetable crops. Potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, on the other hand, are edible tuber crops (Fig. 5.1).
The primary difference in propagation lies in the plant part used: tubers, like potatoes, are propagated from modified stems or roots with “eyes” (nodes) that sprout, while root crops, like carrots, are propagated from seeds or root cuttings, as their roots don’t have these propagation points. Another major difference is that tubers will have long shelf life compared to roots.

• Origin: Tubers are modified stems or roots that store nutrients.
• Propagation: They can be propagated vegetatively by using pieces of the tuber that contain “eyes” (nodes) which sprout and grow into new plants.
• Examples: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cassava.

Introduction

Generally speaking, Conservation Agriculture (CA) includes minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and crop rotation (Hobbs, 2007). CA has been recognized as an efficient way for sustainably increasing crop yields in different countries (Hobbs et al., 2008; Pittelkow et al., 2015). Farmers following CA will face several managerial problems, and weed management is the most challenging (Wall, 2007; Giller et al., 2009; Farooq et al., 2011). Weed growth in an agroecological system and crop yields are inversely related; so, knowledge on weed dynamics and weed management are vital for achieving the possible yield gains in CA systems. There are few studies that examined both the direct and interactive effects of the 3 basic CA principles on weed dynamics (Chauhan et al., 2012; Giller et al., 2009; Farooq et al., 2011).

For comprehensive understanding the current topic, a diagrammatic representation of an annual weed’s life cycle (Fig. 1) will be useful and the same corresponds to four likely areas managing the weeds:

The environment has also been disturbed. Soil is losing its productivity and the biodiversity is threatened. Farming community is trying all means to increase the land productivity. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied in higher proportion, causing environmental pollution hazards. Under all these circumstances agroforestry has shown that besides sustainable agriculture it can also help promote a better environment. This relatively young science known as agroforestry was brought from the realm of indigenous knowledge into the forefront of agricultural research four decades ago and was promoted widely as a sustainability-enhancing practice that combines the best attributes of forestry and agriculture.

Steeply sloping and highly drought-prone areas were mostly left without any cultivation as production from these areas was hardly cost effective. Soil constraints were to be overcome by inputs like improved crop varieties, fertilizers, chemical control of pests and diseases, and the use of irrigation.

The approach of use of newly developed high yielding crop varieties, improved agronomic management practices, use of chemical fertilizers, efficient water management and timely plant protection measures has been successful in achieving large increases in crop productivity in recent years. On the other hand, continuous application of fertilizers at higher rates leads to environmental problems. Yield responses to fertilizers have declined because of soil physical degradation and micronutrient deficiencies. Above all, large numbers of poor farmers simply can neither afford high levels of fertilizers and other purchased inputs, nor do they have the capital to take on the risk involved in their use. Increasing the area under irrigation has also run into severe constraints in the form of limits to available freshwater resources.

Biodiversity provides enormous direct economic benefits, an array of indirect essential services through natural ecosystems, and plays a prominent role in modulating ecosystem function and stability. It provide farming systems and taxa the means to recycle nutrient, reduce insect, pest and disease problems, control weed, maintain good water and soil conditions, handle climate stresses while producing commodities necessary for human survival. It is estimated that 1400 m ha of croplands and agro-ecosystem may provide ecosystem services worth US$ 92 ha-1 per year in pollination, biological control, and food production amounting to total US $ 128 x 109 per year (Costanza 1997). Moreover, Thrupp (1997) explained several benefits provided through conservation of biodiversity (Figure 1). The animal and plant diversity and the knowledge of associated management of these resources are the assets with the farmers which are important in marginal and difficult farm conditions. Higher diversity allows greater access to available resources, and hence increased net primary production and decreased nutrient losses. Diversity management can constitute a central part of livelihood management strategies of farmers and communities in different production system (Rege et al. 2003). The multifunctional services of biodiversity in amelioration of agro-ecosystems as given in Table 1 have also been emphasized by both the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) and the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (2008).
